In the heyday of the Hippie Counterculture, Jim, a disaffected postgraduate, goes on a rural retreat in quest of his identity. He finds a cool alternative abode, which initiates in a bizarre relationship with the housemother, Celia, who turns out to be an undercover police officer, but also with dubious connections. Things develop, including a delicious one—off with Celia, and Jim is drawn towards the edges of nefarious activity. He ends up waiting for his Barrister, convinced he will clear him.

Jim Herrington has found himself wandering and hitchhiking across America, trying to find his place in the world after some difficulties in his Academic workplace. Staying at a cross between a commune and youth hostel, he struggles to fit into the alternative, volatile situation he finds himself in. Ceila, the “house mother” is a strange, mysterious woman prone to sudden changes of heart, yet Jim finds himself unaccountably attracted to her.

This is a slightly strange book, unlike most anything else I’ve read. Told in the first person in some ways it’s difficult to understand what’s going on, as we can only see things from Jim’s perspective and experience. Also, while much is alluded to throughout the story, I didn’t feel as if some things were very clearly explained, things like why – exactly – Jim found himself at this hostel, what he was running from and whether he was complicit in much of the drug trafficking and such. In some ways this felt to me like one of those “confessions of” stories, and while I did enjoy it, I spent most of the time mystified as to where the story was going, what was fully happening with the plot, and what the thrust of the plot really was. Despite this I wanted to understand, the author’s writing was quick, precise and interesting and so I continued to read in the hopes of illumination. While even upon completion I still didn’t get most of it, I didn’t feel as if I had wasted my time either, reading something completely alternative and refreshingly different.

There’s no traditional romance or erotica in this short story, the sex is held pretty much behind closed doors (there’s no graphic content to it, merely a build up to it and then declaration of the act having been performed) and while it’s clear the main relationship is between Jim and Celia, I didn’t personally find any romance between them. For an erotic short story this surprised me, but seemed to resonate with the first person, slightly disjointed, mysterious tone and presentation of the whole tale. I feel that readers who are looking for something completely outside the box and different might truly enjoy this, but readers wanting just a quick, sexy read mightn’t find what they’re looking for here.

A really different read, but still enjoyable.

A dangerous lone wolf is intent on destroying the beginnings of a pack and when Connor is attacked and near death, there is only one thing that can save him. A wolf shifter’s bite.

After a hate crime leaves one of them near dead, Veterinarian, Josh Nolan and Cop, Connor Vincent are starting a new life in Black Creek, a remote town on the edge of the Adirondack State Park, Vermont.

Josh is taking over his grandfather’s practice and Connor settles into working in the sheriff’s office covering the area.

When Connor pieces together a whole list of unsolved crimes going back fifty years he puts his life, and that of his partners, in danger.

A dangerous lone wolf is intent on destroying the beginnings of a pack and when Connor is attacked and near death there is only one thing that can save him. A wolf shifter’s bite.

The New Wolf starts with an established relationship between Connor and Josh, which was a unique way to start a story. I’ll admit I was a bit confused at first and was worried that I had missed a previous book, but from there the story picked up and started dropping some pretty big hints on what’s really happening in Black Creek.

There were some aspects on how things were handled that I found a bit confusing, but I loved Josh and Connor. It was obvious that no matter what, it was Josh and Connor against the world. I will give Ms. Scott some major points for not making everyone just magically on board with all the changes happening.

It’s a quick read that had some technical issues, but the underlying story was well done. I do recommend it for the story and a chance to experience Josh and Connor.

You can’t help with whom you fall in love; the heart’s not that easy.

Beautiful, 22 year old Amelia Fontaine tries to balance college, modeling, work at a dead-end job, and her dreams in Hollywood, but can’t seem to meet every demand, especially when the weight of her lovelife is thrown onto the scale. Will a seemingly too-good-to-be-true job advertisement —pinned to a coffee shop bulletin board—help her begin to make demands of her own?

When an artist’s model gets to touch the artist himself, things get very colorful!

Amelia responds to an advert requesting an artist’s model. She’s curious, intrigued and so she calls the number and arranges to meet the mysterious artist and, if they both find the other agreeable, proceed to work together.

When Amelia meets Daniel she is immediately drawn to his exotic looks and flamboyant personality. She suspects he’s a guy who know what he wants and gets it. Daniel on the other hand is surprised by Amelia’s lack of exoticness, but that doesn’t seem to stop him being keen to get to know her better – much better. Up-close-and-personal better!

For Art’s Sake isn’t a complex plot. It’s boy meets girl and they have wild sex. But Ms Ku does have a nice voice and her style of writing is easy to read. The story certainly bumps along at a great pace and before long you just know you’re going to get some serious heat burning from your page.

I liked Amelia and was keen to see her get her hands on Daniel, though to be fair his hands were pretty nifty too, bringing her many delighted moments. I enjoyed seeing them go wild for each other and getting to know every detail as they did so.

So why the 3 ½ stars instead of 4? Well, that’s for one line that pushed my ability to suspend disbelief. Things get seriously hot, as a reader I’m panting and whizzing through the pages and then this… ‘the handle of the brush was nearly a foot long and Daniel mercilessly slid it in further and further until the bristles themselves scarcely remained outside of her body’. That line is used during anal play and phew, maybe I’m a prude but a foot long brush up my butt… That just ain’t sexy. Perhaps some people love it, crave it, but not me. I always think it’s a good rule of thumb not to give exact measurements of cocks or sex toys in stories, that way the reader can choose their own size, in their head, everyone is different after all.

But I did enjoy the story and this shouldn’t put potential readers off if erotica is your thing, and I would read more by this author.

Out of the cage: Blood might be thicker than water, but sometimes doing what’s best for you means going against your family.

Demitri Vinetti knows his parents believe his claim that he’s gay is an act of rebellion. But when Demitri scents Kiernan Wabinaw at the diner where he works and the human keeps coming back again and again, he’s certain he’s found his mate, a male mate, proving Fate’s on his side. Getting advice from friends, Demitri digs deep for courage and asks Kiernan on a date.

Kiernan is shocked and flattered that such a handsome young man would take an interest in him, especially since his forty-fifth birthday is just around the corner. He’s been fantasizing about Demitri since first spotting him at the diner a couple of weeks ago, and he’s happy to take him up on his offer.

When Kiernan learns that Demitri’s parents beat him for going on a date with him, he discovers protective instincts he’s never known before. But the fact that Demitri’s less than half his age and his parents are abusive is only the first of many shockers. Will Kiernan be able to accept that shifters exist? Or will he chalk Demitri up as too much trouble and run the other way?

Demitri is by far the most submissive wolf shifter I have ever encountered, but luckily for him Kiernan, his human mate, is willing to take control.

I was intrigued and amused by the fact that Demitri was so submissive, while Kiernan had a take charge personality. I understand that wolves are usually submissive to alphas but never imagined a wolf shifter would be submissive to their human mate. This was a unique twist to a shifter story. It shocked me because shifter stories are so prevalent in our society, that a author can find a way to re-invent it was refreshing.

Demitri’s personality as well as his background is one that immediately made me sympathize with him. He has had a rough life, with a abusive father, who cannot seem to accept any part of who he is whether it be his wolf, or his sexuality. This immediately made me wonder about his mother, but she seems to be a victim who welcomes and accepts the abuse, leaving Demitri a natural submissive subject of his father’s fanatical whims. Demitri seems to be a clear underdog in life, and I could not help but root for him when reading this story.

This story was a pretty easy read because the author immediately piqued my interest with the storyline and kept it going. I would definitely consider this a story that could stand on its own, and does not require the reader to have read the previous stories. I hadn’t read any and was able not fall right into the storyline and enjoyed it.

With the antagonist plot pushing Demitri’s and Kiernan’s relationship forward continuously, this story seems to run smoothly and would definitely be a good read for anyone.

On the Road: To combine two lives, first one must understand the components of each.

When Ryan Carpenter realizes the scientists he works for are torturing sentient beings, he feels the need for penance in the form of helping the shifters free their comrades. To that end, Ryan heads to Oregon to offer aide in shutting down one of the scientist’s training facilities and freeing any captive shifters. He’s unprepared for one of the men, Sam Abbott, a Texas longhorn bull shifter, to express an attraction to him. Unfortunately, Ryan has secrets of his own, and knows if he becomes involved with Sam, a shifter, his own transgressions against Sam’s kind would eventually come out, destroying anything they might have built. Walking away—especially for the good of everyone—should be easy, right?

When one man is desperate to redeem his past actions and the other is hell-bent on claiming his mate, what will happen when the two collide? You’re about to find out as Ryan Carpenter and Sam Abbott come face to face in an effort to save a group of tortured shifters.

When Ryan Carpenter discovers that shifters aren’t crazed animals but are indeed sentient beings, he realizes he’s been horribly mislead. His discovery and decision to help free the imprisoned shifters shows you that he’s the kind of man who can take responsibility for his actions and do whatever he can to make his mistakes right. I liked Ryan a lot, but he had a tendency to overreact at times, which can get a bit annoying.

Sam Abbott isn’t your usual shifter – he’s a longhorn bull! I found that to be both amusing and unique as I have a long-standing love of bovines. Let me also say, it’s the perfect animal for him because he’s about as stubborn as one too. Sadly, Sam is a severely damaged man who has trouble with intimacy. I was intrigued to see how this would play out when he discovered Ryan was his mate. Would love conquer all or would Sam be too wounded by his past to make it work?

Truly, Ryan and Sam make a good pair. Where Ryan’s repentant and eager to make a change, Sam is protective and stubborn. Their differences fit together well and work with the other’s quirks. However, there were a couple things that bothered me. Ryan had an immediate knee-jerk reaction to Sam’s confession that they were mates. Although it took the majority of the novel for the two to become intimate, Ryan’s change from ‘no way’ to ‘oh yes’ was a bit too abrupt for me to find believable. There wasn’t enough transition for my tastes. The other thing was the way Sam’s intimacy issues were handled. He had something extremely traumatic happen to him and it felt to me like he was pushed into an uncomfortable situation just to get him past it all. All that aside, Ryan and Sam were given a chance to get to know one another before they landed in bed together and that always makes me happy. I honestly believe that they will have a long and happy life together.

Texas Longhorn Surprise was an enjoyable and sexy story that broke out of the usual shifter storyline. I love damaged characters because they have the longest road to redemption and this short novel had two very damaged characters that have a long road ahead of them. But together, I have no doubt they’ll make it.

What would you do to protect your family? For Aden the answer is anything.

Aden Gale has always protected the boys he chose as his. Gallen Theos refuses to become another one of Aden’s projects. He might have been bespelled by his father but he was Aden’s mate and he refused to take anything less than a full partnership. If the cool-eyed killer thought he could wiggle away for Gallen’s own safety, well he had a lot to learn about the tenacity of sorcerers.

Aden accepted his role as caretaker to all who needed looking after years ago. No one messes with any of his boys, ever. Gallen refuses to be taken care of, wanting instead to be the one to take care of Aden for a change. Can a contract killer allow himself to be cared for or will he convince Gallen to walk away?

Aden Gale is not your ordinary assassin. He only kills those that need killing. Cautious, careful, and precise, he’s the epitome of cold blooded killer. Until he gets home, that is. It was interesting to see how compartmentalized Aden was. Once he was off the job, he was warm, caring, and even doting at times. It was a bit of a stretch, personality wise, but it was still very nice to see. His reservations into entering a relationship with Gallen were solely based on what he thought best for the sorcerer, not because he felt sorry for himself or because he was being an arrogant jerk. Both of which surprised and delighted me.

Gallen Theos is a bit overenthusiastic for my tastes, but the more you learn about his past, the more you understand why he’s so desperate to make Aden accept being his mate. Despite his age, he acts no older than any of Aden’s ‘sons’ and that made me smile for the most part. Youthful exuberance is often needed when dealing with an older man set in his ways.

I had some mixed emotions about this novella. I liked the characters and the world they lived in was fascinating, but I was a little bit lost at times. That, however, wasn’t a deficit of the author, but my fault in that I hadn’t read the preceding installments in the series. I would definitely recommend reading this series in order, if for no other reason than to keep track of all the characters. Also, I felt like the mating issue was forced. For two thirds of the story, Aden resists Gallen’s insistence that the two were mates and then, almost too suddenly, Aden completely changes his mind. There seemed to be no middle ground between them. Despite this, Aden and Gallen really are made for each other. One is hardened by the world where the other is looking for a second chance, one where he is able to prove himself. Aden can easily build up Gallen and help ease his insecurities while Gallen can melt that hardened exterior Aden carries around. Eventually they will find some middle ground and be an ideal couple.

To Kiss a Killer is a highly emotional, fast paced novel, with a surprise addition I wasn’t expecting. Set in a world of shifters, sorcerers and so much more, I was drawn in and kept hopping with each new critter I met. I wish the ending hadn’t been nearly so abrupt, but overall, still a very enjoyable story.

Simon has an offer for his stressed out roommate, but is this stubborn sub already too far gone for Simon’s methods?

Max’s high pressure job as a surgeon is getting to him and he’s starting to suffer for it. His roommate Simon has a solution for him, but is Max ready to give up control or will this Dom have to work for it?

Simon’s not used to dealing with such stubborn subs, but he can’t sit back and let Max’s health and sanity continue to decline in the name of his work. Enough is enough already and if Max doesn’t accept what he’s offering, then Simon might just have to come up with something even more drastic.

But when a night of passion between these two strong willed men exposes Simon’s secrets, it might be he who has to learn to trust and let go of the control he so desperately seeks.

Serving Simon is an interesting read. Simon is a Dom who likes control without the extra trappings of BDSM. Max is stressed to the breaking point and Simon has had enough of watching him run himself down.

Simon obviously really cares for Max, they’ve been roommates for a year and have never made a move on each other. I enjoyed watching the byplay between these characters. Max has to be so in control in his job that he wants to let go with Simon but fights it because he doesn’t think he should want to.

They have an interesting dynamic, they aren’t dating like a traditional couple but they do have a relationship that is more than sex. I don’t think Max could let go with someone he didn’t trust.

The ending kind of threw me, since I didn’t see it coming. Overall I enjoyed this story, it has the feel of a start of a series. I would definitely read more about Simon and Max. This is a pretty hot story with a Dom who loves control but not pain, and a strong sub who learns letting go can help him focus in his every day life.

Rohan had been looking for his blood bonded for centuries. One taste of the bear shifter’s blood and he knows he’s found the one. However, outside forces threaten to tear the couple apart. It will take more than a flash of fang to put them in their place.

To Bite a Bear by Amber Kell is the fourth book in the Banded Brothers series, and while it can be read as a stand-alone, there is a continuing story line from the previous books.

Harris Bender is a quiet sweet artist who is also a bear shifter that has a huge crush on vampire leader Rohan. I adored Harris, he’s an amazing character who takes cares of his friends and those he loves.

Rohan has lived a long time, he has searched for his blood bonded for so long he is surprised when he finds Harris. Watching Rohan court the gun shy Harris was my favorite part, he obviously wanted to push harder for Harris to admit to being his mate, but was so patient that I loved him.

Previous characters from other books make an appearance including a mysterious character who will be the focus of the fifth book in the series and I can’t wait. This is a great shifter story, I loved the characters and I recommend this as a quick night time read.

Sometimes it just takes one fresh spark to rekindle old desires

After being a paramedic for over ten years, Grif is burned out. He has seen all the worst society has to offer and then some. He’s tired and ready to hang up his uniform for good. The thrill of the job has long left him, and his life is going nowhere fast.

Then along comes his new partner, a green-behind-the-ears kid name Kevin. Not only does Kevin have zero in the way of experience, but he’s a brat to boot. A brat who actually is excited about his job. So why is it that Grif finds the kid so damn attractive?

Will Kevin be able to bring back the spark of excitement in Grif’s life? Or is Grif too far gone to be saved?

Grif is an EMS paramedic and totally over the percentage of clients who use the Emergency crews as their personal chauffeurs. More than ten years of working in an ambulance has ground him down and lowered his tolerance for stupidity to a bare minimum. Burnt out, he’s considering a career change, but is unable to think of anything else he’s qualified for. Grif’s cranky, bristly personality might grate on some, and it’s caused him issues in retaining a working partner. When word comes from management Grif’s going to be fired if he can’t maintain a steady working pairing, he’s partnered up with a newbie. Kevin is like a puppy, overeager and totally wet behind the ears. Kevin privately could admit it was his little head – not his large brain – that had volunteered him to be Grif’s partner, but could this mis-matched odd couple bring both Grif and Kevin a lasting happiness both secretly yearn for?

I really loved the by-play between Grif and Kevin. While at a first glance it might seem like they’re complete opposites, it very quickly became clear they’re more alike than you’d think. Kevin might be all positive and have rosy glasses on, but he’s not naïve or stupid. Bad things happen, and working in EMS you see that every day. But retaining that optimism and positive outlook keeps him seeming young and happy, even though he’s got more personal problems going on in his private life than many. The sub-plot revolving around Kevin and his family takes a back seat to the burgeoning relationship between Kevin and Grif – but still manages to help flesh out the strength of the overall story.

Grif, for all his crankiness, is just ground down by all the idiocy people can show all too often during accidents and emergencies. He’s not, however, pessimistic or fatalistic. Grif is just tired of stupid people and wasteful actions caused by the inherent selfishness so many people have. Deep down, Grif still has an urge to care for and help out in people’s darkest times of need. Under the layer of grumpy, he’s definitely an everyday hero. Grif and Kevin’s path together is somewhat rocky – particularly at the beginning, but neither man is an idiot.

I found this a heart warming story, full of spice and action. I loved how realistic both men were. Neither are campy, or over the top. They have their own issues and insecurities, but their coming together is a wonderful thing to witness. I enjoyed the author’s realism and style. There are a few sub-plots that kept the overall pace of the book moving well and I felt added to the strength of the story as a whole. At no stage did I think any particular action by Grif or Kevin was stupid, or forced. I can imagine more than a few fiery arguments in the men’s future, but the solid attraction between them and the strength of the start of their relationship has me smiling and certain they’ll work through anything that comes their way. A great M/M for those wanting a solid plot, enjoyable characters and a happy ending.

Can a little luck help these two men’s feelings ignite during the St. Patrick’s Pub madness?

Since the beginning of his senior year in college, Jimmy has lived above the very popular Irish Pub O’Dwyer’s. Sure, the music is loud and the co-eds constantly party, but the bonus is seeing graduate student Niall come in and out of work on a daily basis. Working separate shifts hasn’t given the two much time to get to know one another. So it’s quite a shock when Niall comes pounding on his door on St. Patrick’s Day asking for help working at the pub on the busiest day of the year. Even though Jimmy just finished with his own shift, being next to Niall for the night is too tempting to resist. Will sparks finally ignite? And will Jimmy find himself having a little luck of the Irish to finally make Niall notice him?

Jimmy is loving his college life. He lives in a studio apartment above a pub and works regular shifts there. His life is a perfect blend of a few close friendships, recreational soccer, his pub work and a secret crush on the owner’s nephew, Niall. St. Patrick’s day is always crazy at the pub and this year proves to be no exception. A steamy kiss between the two men sets things in motion and a new relationship blossoms between them.

I really enjoyed the pacing of this novella. There was a wonderful, gradual progression between Jimmy and Niall. The chemistry and attraction is there right from the start, but instead of jumping in and going too fast the men get to know each other – with plenty of hot kisses and casual intimacies. I found this really balanced and the story of two people coming together wasn’t over-run by the sex. Character based and realistic, this was refreshing to me.

I’d strongly recommend this as a light, introduction piece to people who are curious or interested in M/M relationships but don’t want any heavy emotion, or campy over the top stories. I thought the author did an awesome job showing a realistic couple becoming attracted to each other and starting a relationship. There’s passion, interest and that lovely, golden “getting to know you” phase. Better still, it finishes on a steamy, erotic completion – and it doesn’t take too much imagination to believe this is the beginning of something wonderful for both Jimmy and Niall. A heart-warming, sexy read.
