Twenty-something ice queen Sabrina Smith enjoys the fame and fortune she’s found writing self-help books for a largely female audience. Her readers hang on every word of how the Vegas Virgin—an unflattering and inaccurate moniker given to her by a local shock jock—juggles dating, working, and friendships in Sin City.

And that’s why Jase Reeves spells trouble.

Jase knows Sabrina’s secret—that she’s not nearly as cold as she would like people to think—and he’s through keeping it. He didn’t intend to have a one-night stand with the Vegas Virgin, but now he can’t get her out of his head. And he can’t keep living this lie.

With Jase back at the tables in Vegas, Sabrina has one goal: stay away from the handsome gambler before he melts her career—and her heart.

I’ve always wanted to go to Las Vegas and I always thought it would be cool to be an author. I wish I was Sabrina Smith, the heroine in this story, just to experience a day in her life with the hero, Jase Reeves. How awesome would that be? To be an author like Sabrina and date an amazing card player like Jase in Las Vegas!

This book is part of a trilogy, however it can stand on its own. I haven’t read the other two books before this one but I am seriously considering getting them to read. If Jase’s brothers are anywhere as near as HOT as Jase was then I need to read their stories. I saw a glimpse of the humor among the three siblings and would love to read more of that brotherly bantering that made me laugh out loud.

The chemistry between Sabrina and Jase is quite spicy. The book was listed as sensual but the love scenes between Sabrina and Jase were borderline spicy/hot. Which, when considering the setting is Las Vegas, what can one expect? I thought it worked perfect because Sabrina Smith was labeled the moniker “Vegas Virgin” by a local shock jock and Jase was labeled the typical player. Their relationship held true to the stereotype “hot Vegas nights”.

Sabrina and Jase have similar hurts from their own childhoods to overcome before their relationship can fully have that happily ever after ending. I expected Sabrina to have been the more logical one to get past her childhood trauma since she became famous for writing self-help books. Yet, how could she with her mother still around to inflict the craziness. In fact, I would have given this book 5 stars if not for the annoyance of Sabrina’s mother. Sabrina’s mother irritated me beyond belief – a major frustration. Fortunately the mother was redeemed before the ending and Sabrina and Jase helped each other to see the future was with each other.

What the Gambler Risks by Kristina Knight was really a very good romance story. Jase was irresistible and like I said before, I am definitely intrigued to read the other two books about Jases’s brothers to see how their romance compares. I’m glad I read this story and I would recommend this book if you’re looking for a fun seductive read.

A fantastic read! It hooked me immediately and I absolutely loved the mystery and suspense intertwined with the evolving yet forbidden romance between Kady Larkin Rosham, the heroine and Sir Talon Quereste, the hero.

I fell in love with the well developed, complex characters that are threaded through out the story, all of whom kept me on my toes along with the twists and turns of the well written intricate plot.

The relationship between Lady Larkin and Sir Talon consisted of witty banter mixed with sensual desires. I giggled over the song he sang to her and I still smile thinking about it! I just wish Sir Talon had believed in Lady Larkin sooner than he did. For that little annoyance I couldn’t give this book five stars.

Small town. Big secrets. Welcome to Sweet Ridge.

The Cooper brothers receive the shock of their lives when their deceased father, owner of the lucrative Guac Ole company, wills away their inheritances to three random women.

No one’s more surprised when Jack Cooper leaves the family estate to music superstar Macy Young than his oldest son. Seeing his childhood memories being handed over to his high school rival – the first woman to break his heart – stings, especially when Gavin is left only a pair of old reading glasses and a cryptic note. Luckily, Macy can’t sell the house for one year – plenty of time for Gavin to find a way to get it back.

Living in the harsh spotlight of country music fame has cost Macy, and a little hometown peace and quiet just might heal her soul. But giving up and giving back Gavin’s greatest prize may not be the tune she plans to sing.

Knowing what your inheritance is long before the fateful day arrives has its comforts, but can you ever be sure of what an aging and ailing father might do in his last days?

Jack Cooper built a successful guacamole company called Guac Ole with his middle son primed to take over. Grayson had worked at Guac Ole since he was old enough to earn a paycheck. Older brother Gavin became the local Veterinarian while taking on the job of caring for their father in his declining years. He was there until the end amid promises that the family home now belonged to him. Youngest Gage had nothing to fret, because Dad was leaving him oil-rich land. Jack Cooper was definitely the family patriarch and he was leaving his three boys well set.

Or so everyone believed…

On the day of Jack Cooper’s death, family friend and attorney Rodney has a bombshell for each of the three boys: Gavin’s house has been left to his high school rival, Macy Young, a television star and hit country singer. The oil-rich land Gage expected was willed to Charlotte Wilkinson, an environmental scientist, and Guac Ole, the company Grayson had worked to build, now belonged to Rebecca Nash, a floor supervisor at the same company. It seems the world has been turned upside down!

When Jack Cooper became too ill to take care of himself, Gavin moved home. He had been his father’s caretaker and companion in his final days. So after his father’s death, he planned to stay and move into the master bedroom, and most importantly, keep the home in the family. But now that his high school rival owns the home, what is a handsome, single man to do? It isn’t until lovely Macy Young arrives to check out the home left to her that the two clash—again.

Country singer Macy openly wonders why Jack Cooper, the nice father of her high school rival, would leave his house to her, but lately she is feeling the need to get away from the Hollywood rat race. She shows up to pay her last respects and check out the house. Gavin and Macy clash big time—he blames her for the death of his best friend (her singing sidekick) and she thinks he is still mad about her beating him out of the valedictorian seat in high school.

The two had several run-ins soon after Macy arrived. To me, it was unrealistic that the fact never came up that Gavin lives in the house willed to Macy. In fact, it never comes up until Macy decides to use her key and bunk there for the night! Yet when Macy realizes Gavin is living in the home, she becomes outraged. Seriously, the guy’s dad just died, his childhood home was given to you instead of him, and you’re going to barge into his house and plan to live there without any remorse?

Here’s the funny thing … I actually liked the story! It was well written, although character flaws and plot holes abound, but I can’t help but recommend it to you. There is a love scene (okay, who didn’t expect that?) between Gavin and Macy that had me fanning myself while still being clean enough to read and re-read, which is why I rated this “spicy,” albeit mild. It was tasteful and well done. By the way, the cover is so NOT this story!

Surely, stories of the other brothers must be in the works, right? Yeah, I’ll be watching for them. If you enjoy unexpected and out-of-the-ordinary romance stories, maybe you should be watching for more, too.

This was a well written, nicely paced, realistic love story. I enjoyed reading this story while sitting on a 9 hour plane ride. Only problem is I still have 5 more hours before this plane lands and I’m sitting here smiling like a goofball thinking about Amos Tanner & Tamar Freeman.

The story quickly drew me in on the first page. Tamar is a strong, intelligent independent, mid 30’s respectable lady. Amos’ character is complicated but that is the intriguing part of the story that kept me glued to turning the pages. He is an ethical, honor bound gorgeous and strong. He’s the kind of hero that is more than capable of filling my dreams, oh, I mean, he met my ideal “book boyfriend” expectations. The chemistry between the two made it a bit awkward to be sitting near a stranger on a plane!

The plot is clever and unique in a couple of ways that I can’t share without spoiling the surprises. It was refreshing to read a story that was skillfully written by an obviously talented author. This story made my heart swell and brought a genuine smile to my face. It was a fully satisfying happy ending that came sooner than I wanted it to.

I could see a story in the future for Tamar’s sister, Delia that I’d be interested in reading.

I am glad I chose to read this book and I can easily recommend it to others.

This book has so many threads that it’s like a giant spider web that captured me and I didn’t know which way to turn. There is a grand cast of characters that were so plentiful and diverse that this novel could be made into a mini-series. It kind of reminded me of the TV series, Dallas, back in the late 1970’s, but better. There were so many twists and turns with multiple plots all woven together that it amazed me that Ms. Hoos was able to keep them all straight and on point.

Here’s a warning for readers – there are jarring scene shifts. Even though I didn’t have a big problem with them, they were a bit abrupt. There I was, in the zone, reading a scene when all of a sudden I’m somewhere else exciting, then I’m yanked out again and back into where I was before, still exciting, still fascinated but it takes a split second to reorient. This happens throughout the book.

There are some scenes that contain some graphic, rough sex which take place between a bad pirate and a secondary character. I was okay with them but some readers may not be.

I wanted to make this review longer but I can’t go into details because everything I might say would be a spoiler. Everything is so interconnected it’s just not possible to pinpoint any one thing.

Ms. Hoos was able to take care of all her characters and plot threads to provide a satisfactory conclusion. There’s action, double crossing, secrets, lies, revenge and so much more to be sucked in by that I wasn’t able to put the book down. Even the dialogue was good, and the chemistry between the hero and heroine absolutely worked.

Cate and Alexander’s journey to their happy ever after left me breathless. Make sure you have time to sit down and concentrate on this story. This is one of those stories I won’t forget anytime soon.

In 1863, America is war-weary. Fifteen-year-old Saffron Fitzpatrick, whose teenage years have been spent mourning the dead rather than dancing at her debutante ball, just wants to visit her beloved horse after being housebound due to the draft riots. A chance meeting with soldier Ezekiel Boone changes everything.

Three years ago, Ezekiel ran away with his older brothers to join the war effort, welcoming the chance for adventure. But when all four of his brothers die at Chancellorsville, he retreats home, despondent and depending on the kindness of strangers, like Saffron, who help him on the journey. They share a wild ride and a breathless kiss, parting with fond memories.

Fate reunites the couple three years later, and their former attraction rekindles as they discover unexpected common ground and begin to build a relationship. But though the war is over, a future together may still elude them … especially if Saffron’s older, protective brother and the U.S. Army have anything to say about it.

The war separated Saffron and Zeke once. Will the army tear them apart a second time?

Saffron and Zeke meet under unusual circumstances, and their emotions lead them into sharing an innocent yet intense first kiss that neither of them forgot. Three years later they find themselves face to face again. While they’ve both reminisced about that kiss, they don’t really know much about each other. Will reality be able to live up to their dreams?

I must admit that I have mixed feelings about Saffron. While it is clear she has a good heart, I think she has a lot of growing up to do. She strikes me as childish despite her insistence on being treated as an adult. One passage describes her “stamping her slippered foot.” This action is more suited to a child throwing a tantrum rather than a young woman. I also wanted more emotional depth from Saffron. The Civil War was extremely brutal and Saffron and Zeke are tasked with digging up the remains of soldiers and bringing them back to be buried in cemeteries. This would have been a particularly gruesome undertaking, but Saffron doesn’t seem to be affected by it, or at least there is no evidence of it as I read. Despite these issues, I am happy to say that by the end of the story, I saw glimmers of the mature woman Saffron has the potential to become. I can’t give details without spoiling the story, but I will say that Saffron supports Zeke in two particularly difficult circumstances.

Zeke is an easy hero to warm up to. He in kind, generous, and always willing to help. He shoulders immense responsibility at a young age. When his brothers die, he returns to the family farm even though he never imagined himself farming for the rest of his life. He does it because his family needs him. Zeke is certainly an admirable young man.

While I believe that Zeke and Saffron have the potential to be a great couple, their relationship never really flared to life for me. Again, I must cite Saffron’s immaturity as the chief obstacle in my mind. Zeke is more rounded and has much more emotional depth. When I compare him to Saffron and her somewhat spoiled attitude, I have a hard time picturing them as a truly compatible couple. However, I will say that Saffron is determined to prove her love for Zeke and she does this by fiercely supporting him when a weaker woman would have deserted him. I believe in time that they will grow into a strong couple.

The Forgotten Debutante is a good book. Zeke and Saffron are sweet and their happy ending is certainly deserved. While this story is the ninth in a series, it stands alone well as Ms. Lower explains everything very clearly. Fans of historical romance might want to give The Forgotten Debutante a try.

What he does discover is a secret that could blow apart not only Becca’s world but his whole family. With so much hanging in the balance, Grayson must decide whether it’s better to follow his head or his heart.

Robyn Neeley creates a tension that sweeps the reader into the conflict immediately in Sweet Texas Charm, the last book of the trilogy Sweet Texas Secrets. This book rounds out the Cooper men’s story beautifully. While it is part of the trilogy, it can be enjoyed as a standalone book.

Grayson Cooper has no intentions of falling into the same predicament (in his estimation) as his brothers. He is CEO of the family business, Guac Olé. He is furious about his father leaving fifty percent of the company stock to Becca Nash, a line supervisor in the guacamole factory. He set in to buy, beg, or whatever to regain the company shares that he feels are rightfully his. His actions set him on a collision course with Becca who is efficient and fair, with unquestionable integrity. However, she does have a hot temper when pushed too far.

The secondary characters, extremely important to the unfolding of the story, come alive with the author’s smooth, flowing writing style. She weaves details in so subtly the reader gets an abundance of information while the plot unfolds at an attention-keeping pace. An undercurrent of emotions bubbles throughout the story—emotions that come to a boil from time to time, in more than one way.

The author’s use of foreshadowing, symbolism, play on words, and subtle humor adds more depth and pleasure to the story.

When the tapestry of the trilogy is complete, the intertwined stories reveal a romantic history of two generations of Cooper men.

The conflicts and undercurrent of dark secrets tug the reader into a tangled web that keeps one turning pages. What a mess these people have made!

Isidore, Viscount Blackwood, surely doesn’t come across as “hero” material when the reader first meets him. He did indeed have a tough row to hoe to wiggle his way into this reader’s good graces. However, what he overcomes and how he overcomes it makes for tension-filled, stay-up-late reading. His struggles give him a depth of understanding that eventually make him ideal for Ella who struggles to make a life for herself without family support while all the while coping with her little-understood epilepsy.

Joanne Lowell named the novel well. The title foreshadows the dark, dreadful issues that plague not only Ella and Isidore, but also many of the secondary characters, especially Clements, Isidore’s longtime friend and Daphne Bennington, who had been Phillipa’s best friend.

This author does a wonderful job of creating a sense of place as she lets the reader feel the distressing emotional undercurrent tied to the death of Phillipa and immerses the reader into the doings of the characters.

Isidore has to dig deep to redeem himself, but he does. Moreover, he affirms Ella and lets her know, without a doubt, she is worthy. He is a true “hero.” Dark Season has a unique, special happy-ever-after.

The protagonists in Sweet Texas Fire, Gage Cooper, an oil man, and Charlotte Wilkinson, an environmentalist, strike sparks off each other that could start a Texas fire. They are both strong-willed and “dedicated-to-their-professions” people. In their professional dealings Charlotte is a “thorn-in-the-flesh” to Gage. It gets worse when they are thrown together by a coincidence that is a major premise running through the trilogy. This encounter sets off personal conflicts that add fuel to the fire of their professional conflicts.

The business deal they finally agree on sets things up to create a love story fraught with pitfalls.

Each of them has an agenda that does not blend well with the other one’s agenda. When love wiggles its way into the conflicting agendas, and their physical attraction to each other is acted upon, the emotional upheaval makes page-turning reading.

The twist that comes, when a box is found in the attic, intrigues.

The story unfolds in a predictable progression, making it an easy, relaxing read. It kept me well entertained on an evening when I needed a respite from the real world. Since I was born and raised in Midland County and have ties to the oil business and Houston, I found the author’s views about the environment and the people fun to read. The characters, both the primary ones and the secondary ones, depict a slice of life in Texas. Much of the profanity so overused used these days did not seem to fit the characters personalities. I was disappointed to see them.

Sweet Texas Fire has me all set to read the third book of this trilogy to see how Grayson, the middle son of the deceased Jack Cooper, copes with terms of his father’s will—terms that were not at all what he’d expected.

One one drawback for me: although the story was set in 1829, much of the ideas and conversational style read as contemporary.

However, Charlotte’s character, her plight and her determination (and her ability to confound) all make this story. She’s funny and engaging and it would be easy to read other stories featuring this main character.
