Hazel Young is a rare commodity in town: a young, single female whose first mating is nearly upon her. She’s spent the last two years fending off suitors who grow more determined by the day — after all, there’s nothing flattering in the attention of werewolves more interested in what she is than who she is, especially not when she gave her heart away to Oliver Russell years ago. But Oliver seems to feel nothing for her but fond kindness, and the time has come to choose a mate before the wolf makes the choice for her.

When Oliver happens across Hazel being pressured by a local who wants to be her first, it awakens protective instincts he thought he’d set aside with the death of his wife five years ago. With Hazel in heat and no time to get her to safety, they wind up in a fishing shack on Lonely River, waiting for her mating fever to pass. The last thing he expects is to be tempted by her inexperienced attempts at seduction.

Moira Rogers scores again with this fascinating futuristic paranormal about a young female werewolf in heat and the older male were that she loves.

We first met the heroine and hero of this story, Hazel Young and Oliver Russell as secondary characters in the fabulous first book in the Down and Dirty series, Wild Card. While this book is part of a series, I found that it stood alone quite well and could easily be read on its own.

In Calling the Bluff, Hazel, a young female werewolf in heat, is feeling the affects of her upcoming first mating and knows she must mate or risk hurting herself and others. As one of the few females in town, she spends all her time fending off potential suitors while longing for the one man who doesn’t seem to be interested, Oliver. As the two wait for Hazel’s mating to pass, they grow closer and begin to explore the possibilities that exist between them, but Oliver is not sure he can provide the love and relationship that Hazel needs.

Hazel and Oliver share a very touching bond and relationship and I enjoyed how the author brought them together in this story. Both have a lot to deal with but seem to be perfect for one another despite their differences. They were well-matched with intriguing personalities and histories and seem to come together with a passion that scorched the pages.

In addition to the characters, I am once again very impressed and taken with the almost western-like feel of this futuristic set series and loved the uniqueness of the whole setting and concept. It was a nice blend of the past and present in a futuristic and paranormal world and applaud Moira Rogers for the choices made.

My one complaint about the story is that at times it felt a bit hurried or rushed and I wish the action had been a bit slower-paced. Other than that, this story was a great read with a fascinating setting and a passionate romance between two likeable characters. If you want something a bit different with your shapeshifter romances, then you might want to try this one.

Silvana McCurdy is losing her mind. She hasn’t had a good night’s sleep in six weeks, all because of a dream lover who insists on playing out every one of her sexual fantasies — even the kinky, bold, and disturbing ones. If only he was real… she could figure out a way to deal with him then.

But he is real. And when Silvana meets Rafael, she’s shocked by the tumultuous effect he has on her. Just by touching her, he threatens to unleash the dragon that lies dormant inside her soul. And that’s a risk she’s not willing to take. So she runs away from the man who’s slowly ruining her life and takes shelter inside Madame Periwinkle’s Erotic Delights shop.

Yet the surprises don’t stop there. Madam Periwinkle offers Silvana a solution in the shape of a perfectly crafted chocolate dildo. Too bad magical dildos don’t come with instructions. Silvana has no idea whether she should she eat it, insert it, or dangle it in a circular pattern before her eyes like she’s seen hypnotists do on TV. Being a shape-shifting dragon is hard enough, but it’s so much harder when you can’t maintain your human form during orgasm. That makes for a rather long, lonely life as far as she’s concerned. Enter Rafael, the man from Silvana’s dreams. Each stunned that the other is real, neither is quite sure how to react.

Happy to have found a shifter story dealing with something other than a feline or wolf form, I eagerly delved into Better Than Chocolate with high expectations. And Ms. Savage does not disappoint. She delivers a very unique, entertaining story hot enough to melt the chocolate dildo of Slivana’s! She has a knack for developing her characters fully in just a few short pages and bringing a story together. If you are looking for a steamy story with appealing characters, a fun plot, and more sex than you can handle, Better Than Chocolate is it!

DEEP BREATHING brings us a tale of romance lost and fantasies found. Distance has dampened Sheila’s love life for too long. In the hopes of rekindling their romance, she surprises her life partner Diane with plans for a romantic getaway. But, Diane has plans of her own — she’s moving out.

Taking a friend’s advice, Sheila follows through with the vacation plans and comes face-to-face with a waking dream: Abbie, one of the resort’s scuba instructors. Abbie’s got a technique to help Sheila overcome more than her claustrophobia…

This very short story takes place on a lush beach resort, a perfect setting for heroine Shelia to recover from a breakup. When she meet scuba instructor Abbie, it’s only a matter of time before the two women connect both emotionally and physically. Poor breathing is shallow and uses only the chest and not the diaphragm, the deep muscle low in the abdomen. tadalafil 40mg india The drug releases serotonin, which then helps the person by creating a stream downtownsault.org order generic cialis of blood to enter the vessels in the penis, resulting in a firmer erection which lasts longer. I enjoyed the way in which this sexual pairing took place: mostly underwater, at first. Abbie is a patient teacher and uses unique techniques to encourage Shelia to get over her claustrophobia and fear of diving under the surface. The two have a couple of intense physical encounters, yet when it’s time to leave the resort, a twist of sorts opens new possibilities for their future together.

There really isn’t any significant conflict in this story of female loving. And unfortunately, I found the plot “twist” at the end a little too convenient. Overall it’s a simple tale, but the characters are sweet and the sex is well written. If you’re looking for a quick, light read that features some hot girl-on-girl sex, then “Deep Breathing” should do the trick.

Author Interview: Ryshia Kennie

The Long and the Short of It is very pleased to welcome Ryshia Kennie. Ryshia’s always been an avid reader and even created stories as a child, dreaming of one day being a writer. She trained as a nurse, studied administration, traveled the world, but never stopped writing.

She told me if she were just starting out in life, as well as writing, she would study English, journalism or creative writing. “Something that would help me technically as a writer. And then I would strike out on my own,” she said. “However, I took administration because an office job was the sure way to stability and success—but that’s a whole ’nother topic.”

I asked her what advice she would give to a new writer just starting out. “Don’t follow the crowd,” she said. “That’s one of the blessings and banes of romance. There are so many writers out there willing to stop and help beginning writers that you can lose your voice in the noise of all those helpful voices. Sometimes you’ve just got to shut the door, be you and write without interference from anyone, no matter how helpful. Because in the end it’s just you, that blank screen, that empty room, and those voices in your head.”

Ryshia’s “empty room” is a downstairs former bedroom. “It’s incredibly inspiring,” she said, “despite an urgent need for new carpet and paint. It is the last holdout for renovations. My fault. I refuse to relinquish my space for even a day, but despite that it is a book-lined haven. On the walls I have bulletin boards with all the cards and congratulations I received on my first publication From the Dust, pictures and posters that motivate me, a file cabinet full of the business of writing, a laptop and mementos that are special to me.”

Her space is inspiring because it is totally about writing. And, it’s all hers. She told me that it seems even others feel that very personal vibe because family and friends don’t stay long when they venture into her office. “And, no,” she assured me, “it has nothing to do with the Stay Out sign on the door—kidding! They are all welcome, when I’m not on a writing jag, of course.”

Ryshia believes that the most important elements of good writing can’t be taught. She called it “the heart and soul of writing.” Or what Simon Cowell calls the “it factor.” “When a reader puts down the story and has been touched by it, engaged by it, when it’s a keeper on a shelf—then you have good writing.” She told me there are a lot of good books out there, but very few of them have the “it factor” and it’s something no outline, character development or storyboard can give you. “Don’t get me wrong,” she said, “the mechanics are definitely necessary, but the ‘it factor’—that’s the difference between good and great. For me, I’m happy if someone says [my work] is good, but I still ache for great.”

A self-confessed “pantser,” Ryshia tells me her titles happen the same way as her stories. “They just pop into my head,” she said. “As the characters emerge, so do other details including the title. As I get a feel for the story, the title becomes apparent and often is key to the direction of the story. When I know the title–that is the moment when the plot and characters have become real and a tentative route has been mapped.”

Ryshia loves hearing from her readers. She told me it was “the most inspiring and surprising things about publishing a book.” She’s had discussions with readers from the character traits of the secondary characters to what inspired her to write the story to the identity of the person the heroine is modeled after. She even had one discussion with a ninety-year-old man (her uncle) who was perturbed she didn’t detail the aftermath of the sex scene. “Each reader seems to pull a different aspect out of the story and focus on that,” she said. And this acts as a big time peace of mind to the men levitra generic no prescription out to there who are unfortunately suffering from the disorder. What makes a hospital a perfect trauma hospital? You ask an orthopedic surgeon about the qualities cialis properien of what he has lost. By the grace of electronic media, you can generic levitra to live a normal sexual life. This way, you can go about your life knowing that the see for more info levitra generika secret is safe. “It’s been a joy hearing from them all. You can’t imagine the thrill I get when I open an email and see that familiar subject line and the name of yet another new reader.”

I asked Ryshia if she really, really wanted a dog. Her response was, “I really, really have a dog or maybe the dog has me. Rourke’s an Irish Terrier with Attitude.” She’s pretty much had a dog all her adult life and at one period of her life she had a dog and a ferret. “Of course,” she added, “I was single at the time. Hmmm—was there a connection between those two events—is there a story there?” If there is, she’s not talking yet. Maybe she will share it in tomorrow’s Q&A at the Yahoo group!

She also shared with me that when she was a child, her teacher never thought she would develop her own handwriting style. “I was forever copying a new handwriting, kind of flavor of the week,” she admitted. “Now I have my own style and for some reason my capital f’s are always written backwards. I think it is a throwback to my grade school days and maybe the kid behind or beside me had what I considered great handwriting and did backwards f’s – who knows. Or maybe I’m just handwriting challenged – but the f’s are backwards.”

But, that wasn’t her strangest habit. And…her strangest one also goes back to her childhood. “When I was a kid on the Canadian prairies, I would challenge my brother in the winter to an outside foot race across huge banks of snow in – 30 Celsius (-22 Farenheit) weather. Basically the idea was who could run outside barefoot the longest distance without finally succumbing and going inside won. Of course, I being the oldest, always won. Now, I will still go outside to the barbeque or to hang up a rug or whatever in my bare feet and won’t be in a rush to dash inside. Go figure. But then people walk over hot coals and I don’t get that either.”

Ryshia is definitely a morning person, especially on the weekends. “I’m able to shower, have breakfast and brew coffee. Then I can curl up with a blanket for that first cup of brew and my laptop before venturing outside for a walk with Rourke. There’s a time limit on the laze time and Rourke makes sure of it because what follows is his time. Every weekend morning we go for a walk through the neighborhood where anything can happen. We’ve been interviewed by police after rescuing lost children, rescued the neighborhood recluse from sleeping on her front porch because she was afraid to ask for help to unlock her door, chased down run away puppies and on our more sedate walks, just soaked up the smells and sounds of the neighborhood. And yes I live in a perfectly safe, calm suburb of my city it’s just when you’re at ground level every day you see what others driving by just miss. Every walk is an adventure.”

Finally, I asked Ryshia about her favorite pizza. “Feta and spinach, hands down,” she said promptly. “A cold Alexander Keith in the local Irish pub, O’Hanlon’s. Oh I can taste it now, the feta warm and savory as it caresses my tongue, sending waves of … I’m sorry enough of that question. I think I’ve just been inspired to finish that troublesome love scene in Last Man Standing.”

She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy

The second book in the Country Music Collection is about the oldest Johnson brother, Heath and the woman who broke his heart, Chance. Is it time to call it quits or is it time to act like grown ups and give their marriage a real shot?

I was so excited to read about this second Johnson brother, Heath. In the first book, he was so tortured. He hardly ever smiled, was quick to anger and kept an emotional distance even from his family. He was definitely a guy I wanted healed. So I was looking forward to seeing what Cara came up with as a reason for his being written that way and how she was going to solve the mystery. She did great. She sure knows how to write romance.

Don’t let the summary throw you. They are acting like grownups, but these two people, Heath and his estranged wife, Chance, have a lot of baggage to unload before they can truly give their marriage a fair shake. It’s not that they don’t love each other. That becomes painfully clear though the first half of the story. It’s what has happened to themselves in their formative years that scarred them. Heath has the issue of his family dynamics growing up which has wrecked havoc with his psyche. He, being the oldest, shouldered a lot of responsibility and interpreted the relationship between his dad and mom as only a kid can. Unfortunately, Heath needs the grown up version of understanding to get ahead in his relationship with Chance.

Chance had a horrible childhood. She covered it up with bravado. The thing is, when is it time to stop living a lie and not only embrace the gift of love, but trust it?
The passion Heath and Chance have is explosive and the truest thing they can easily hold on to when everything else is riddled with doubts.

I enjoyed reading the scenes about their physical expressions of love because they were so powerful. It wasn’t just sex. It was reaching out, loving, at times tender, and at other times, desperate.

I also appreciated the family feeling in this story because we get to visit with Jack and Beth again from Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off. I cracked up during the scene when the women have a girl’s night out. Jack had a perfect line.

The culmination of the story was a beautiful HEA that will melt your heart – and leave you with a big grin. Read it and see.

OH! I bet once you’re done reading this book you’re going to be asking yourself, “When do I get to find out what happens to Rafe? Will that woman wake up and smell the coffee or what?” I know I am.

Review: The Cougar Meets Her Master

The Cougar Meets Her Master
by KyAnn Waters

Taylor Davis is turning 40. Her high powered job leaves little room for romance outside of her high powered vibrator that sleeps under her pillow. No pillow talk allowed. And no complaints from her. The rabbit never quits before she’s done, doesn’t complicate her calendar, and Taylor doesn’t have to concoct excuses to make it go home after orgasms.

Enter Colt Foster. Has the bitch of the Beau Monde Hotel and Casino met her match? The hot, young detective has his own rules…and expects Taylor to play by them. Can she say no when Colt slaps on the cuffs? Does she want to…will he let her?

No thirty-something or forty-something woman can resist a May (man)-December (woman) romance and this one delivers in a big way. In Colt Foster, Taylor Davis is expecting a pimply-face eighteen-year-old nephew of her best friend, but instead, the late-twenties Adonis catapults her pulse and throws her moral code into chaos. Taylor is a hard-core career almost-40 woman in control of her surroundings and is a self-proclaimed ‘bitch’. What better challenge for Colt, who is determined to possess and dominate her?

The dynamics between the two are perfect. generic levitra pill It comes in the form of pills prescribed to solve an erectile dysfunction issue in men. Some Ways to Keep viagra online canada Up Your Sexual appetite. The age difference and the fact that he is her best friend’s nephew cause Taylor to hesitate in succumbing to Colt. It’s one thing to fantasize about a younger man, but another to actually do something about it, right? And the familial aspect — even though it’s her friend’s relative — could be a little unsettling and would give most women pause. His demand for her submission confuses her — she’s always in control, so why is she so turned on by his demands, and why is she compelled to please him? Taylor’s reactions to these dilemmas and her realization of the possibilities with Colt are addressed realistically and logically and pump up the tension between the two.

Colt is just… Hot. He sees her, he wants her; he goes after her. This character totally works for me! He relishes the challenge of dominating an alpha-female like Taylor so he presses his agenda with maximum heat, forcing her to gradually forgo her inhibitions. Their intimate encounters are steamy and pretty graphic, but well written for maximum effect. The compatibility they discover while together strengthens the development of the relationship.

The BDSM aspects of the story are more subtle than you sometimes see, that is, D/s is displayed more as a state of mind for Taylor and Colt as opposed to utilizing many overt props and activities associated with a BDSM lifestyle. So if you’re not sure about it, this would be a rousing introduction for someone who has never read something in this genre. The characters are interesting, the sex steamy and the HEA promises future delights. Who could ask for more?

Article: Writing Tip: A Word on “That”

by Lisa Silverman
Once in a while I am called upon to edit or proofread a manuscript that makes a particular mistake with great frequency, and I’m reminded to tell you all to avoid aforementioned mistake. Today I am helping to rescue an author who had difficulty knowing when to include or omit the ever-present but little-considered word “that.”

I refer to “that” not when used as a pronoun (”That was a great party”), adjective (”I prefer that website”), or adverb (”He wasn’t that fat”). Usage in those cases is more straightforward, although the word can perhaps be replaced by a more interesting or descriptive one.

The more troublesome function of “that” is as a conjunction, usually introducing a subordinate clause. It’s troublesome because in many cases, it’s perfectly acceptable to use “that”—-and perfectly acceptable not to. You should be able to recognize when it makes a difference, and why.

Example:
“Peter told Paula that she looked beautiful.”
“Peter told Paula she looked beautiful.”

Economy of words being important to me, I would choose the latter sentence. It conveys the same information without being unclear. However, eliminating “that” can sometimes affect the clarity of a sentence, and while you’re being your own editor, clarity should trump even the economy of words. When the clause being introduced follows a transitive verb, the introductory “that” can often prevent a misreading of the subject of the clause as the object of the verb, as in this example:

“She trusted that Ken had been faithful.”
“She trusted Ken had been faithful.”

In this case, go with the first sentence. Why? While the meaning of the second sentence will be clear to most readers by the time they arrive at the period, they will first find themselves reading this: “She trusted Ken.” And we don’t want our readers to be confused for even the millisecond that it takes them to get from “Ken” to “had.” Because confusion creates distance.

This is another one of those little tricks you can use to address both wordiness and lack of clarity in your writing. Look for “that” when you’re rewriting, and make sure it’s there when it should be and gone when it’s unnecessary. And that will be that.
