Top Ten Tuesday: What to Watch When We’re not Reading

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  This week is about TV shows and movies to watch when we’re not reading.  I don’t have cable or satellite.  When I watch TV shows or movies, it is typically through Netflix.  This means I’m usually a bit behind when it comes to comes to TV shows. However, I’m okay with that since I can watch my shows whenever I have time, and I can enjoy older shows as well.  Titles are linked to IMDb.

The Last Kingdom-I just recently discovered this show about Vikings and Saxons.  There are two seasons out and Netflix plans on releasing season three soon!

Sherlock-I loved this show!  I wish there were plans for more episodes.

The Vampire Diaries-I guess most people would consider this a guilty pleasure, but I don’t care.  I freely admit I thoroughly enjoyed this show!

Frasier-I think this show and its humor have held up really well.

Dragons: Race to the Edge-Yes, this is a show for kids, but I think it is great.  I’d probably watch it even if I didn’t have kids.

North and South-I know I’ve mentioned this mini series before.  It is a great adaptation of the book.  Richard Armitage is wonderful as Mr. Thornton.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir-I love this old movie!  I’ve watched it many times, and I still get misty eyed at the ending.  It is so sweet.

Murdoch Mysteries-I love a good mystery series, and this is one of my favorites.  The characters are fun and quirky, especially Murdoch’s friend George Crabtree.

Ripper Street-This is a dark and interesting show.  The characters were well rounded and wonderfully flawed.  I do wish the ending could have been a bit happier.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries-Phyrne is such a fun character, and she and Detective Jack Robinson have excellent chemistry.  The series has ended, but I believe there are plans for a movie!

Have you watched any of these?  What do you think?  What are some of your favorite shows?

  3. We just cut the cord on our cable this past weekend, so I am now officially in the same boat you are. I tend to watch Netflix mostly anyway. Sherlock is awesome. I love that show too. And Vampire Diaries is a guilty pleasure of mine too. I didn’t like the books, but I like the TV show. I love Miss Fisher!

    • We gave up cable/satellite ten years ago and I really haven’t missed it. Sure I’m always a bit behind on tv shows, but as I said this doesn’t really bother me much.

I never read the Vampire Diaries books, but I have heard from many people that the show was better, which is a rarity.

Miss Fisher is so much fun! I really hope the movie becomes a reality!

  4. I will pretty much watch anything that lands on BBC America. Hahaha. I do like Sherlock, but I love Elementary (but that might have more to do with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu than anything else.)

  5. I remember watching North and South a long time ago. I remember reading the book series too. Or maybe it was the sequel to the miniseries.

    • I love North and South. I never get tired of watching it, though I don’t get to watch it often as I don’t have time for it.

      Thanks for commenting!

  6. I absolutely love North and South! Every year or so I go in a bit of a period drama binge and watch it, Pride and Prejudice and Cranford then pick and choose some other ones too

  7. Thank you for stopping by at my page 🙂 I love Fraiser, btw! Can’t believe I didn’t include it on my list. Niles is the best.

  8. Great list! I loved Sherlock! I’m still hoping there’ll be new episodes eventually.

    • I’m hoping there will be more episodes eventually, but only if the cast and everyone involves feels right about it. Fingers crossed!

  9. That North and South miniseries is amazing. I love it so much. And Miss Fisher is such fun. I love her character so much.

    • North and South really is amazing.

Miss Fisher is definitely fun. I’m really hoping the movie actually happens. I will definitely watch it!

  10. I haven’t seen many of these! I must try watch more…

  11. I watched the first season of The Last Kingdom but haven’t caught S2 yet. And Miss Fisher’s looks like a lot of fun- I’ve seen the first episode and definitely will be watching more!

    • I hope you enjoy S2 of The Last Kingdom soon! It is based on a series by Bernard Cornwell. I’ve decided I need to read the books since I’m enjoying the series so much.

Miss Fisher is so much fun! I wish there were more seasons, but I am looking forward to the movie.

      Thanks for visiting!

  12. North & South is SO good. Richard Armitage!

  13. Sherolock and North and South are the only one I have seen, but the others look like ones I need to check out!

  14. I’ve been told I need to start Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries – one of these days. 🙂

  15. I also love Vampire Diaries. Have you watched The Originals? Its the spin-off of VD. Great List. I need to check out the other other shows that you mentioned 🙂

    • I watched the first season and part of the second season I believe, but got behind and haven’t watched any more. I still might some day. I believe they are even doing another spin off of The Originals called Legacies. It is about the school for young paranormals. It sounds interesting.

  16. The Last Kingdom for sure! We binged the series when we were on holiday last year. Don’t know if we’re a season behind or not though. I should check when I get home..

Vampire Dairies deserves all the love – if only for Damon. But Klaus and Elijah will always be my top favorites. 🙂

    • Love the Last Kingdom!! I can’t wait for season three.

Damon was definitely my favorite on Vampire Diaries! I always liked Elijah as well, and Klaus is certainly intriguing. I never finished watching The Originals though so I didn’t get to “know” them as much as Damon.

      Thanks for visiting! 🙂

  17. I have North and South on dvd. I should really pull it out soon!

  18. Sherlock and Frasier! God I miss the type of comedy like Frasier — it was just wonderful!

    • Yes, Frasier is such a fun show, and, as I said, I think it has held up really well and is still funny.

Thank you for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  19. I remember Frasier. My parents watched it when I was a kid, so I accidentally saw a lot of episodes. It’s a good show.

    • I was a kid when it first started airing, but was in college when it ended. I watched a lot of reruns of it. I love that it is on Netflix so I can watch it whenever.

      Thanks for visiting. 🙂

  20. Yess to Sherlock and TVD! I’ve only watched TVD this year and flew through all the seasons in 3 binge-watch sessions 😀
I need to check out the rest of the shows and movies on your list because I haven’t heard of them before and they sound like something I might be interested in watching!

    • I’m glad you enjoyed TVD! 🙂

I hope you get a chance to get out the others shows on my list.

      Thanks for commenting!

  21. I really enjoyed Sherlock too! I hope there are plans for more episodes, but I can only hope and wait for now 🙂

    • I kind of hope there are plans for more episodes, but at least the episodes we have ended on a good note.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  22. Frazier is an awesome show – I love Niles! 😀

  23. Oooh I haven’t watched any of these! Except maybe a few episodes of Frasier, but true story, Kelsey Grammer always high key freaked me out and I have no idea why.

    • Sorry you aren’t able to enjoy Frasier, but maybe you’ll like one of the other shows on my list.

Thank you for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  24. I’ve only watched a few episodes of Sherlock but I really prefer Elementary over it! I just looked up Ripper street. Wow, how did I miss that??? It looks really good!

    • I’ve never watched Elementary. I’ll have to look into it!

Ripper Street is really good. As I said, it is definitely dark, but very interesting. I hope you like it if you get a chance to watch it.

      Thanks for visiting. 🙂

  25. Great list! I watched North & South for the first time a few months ago and immediately rewatched it. It is so good! You mentioning The Ghost and Mrs. Muir actually made me a little emotional for a second. My grandma used to adore that film and we would watch it together all the time when I was little. I miss her, and every time I think of that movie, it reminds me of those fond memories, so thank you for mentioning it! ♥

    • North and South is definitely a favorite.

I’m glad you have such wonderful memories of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir!

  26. I loved Frasier! I think I’ve seen them all in reruns! Murdoch though is a roommate fav too! And YES to Sherlock 😉 You have great TV taste! ❤️

  27. OH Murdoch Mysteries. I have the first season (I think) on dvd. That is just a fun inbetween watch. I saw a bit of Ripper Street when it started airing but then didn’t have the time to catch it on later.

    • Murdoch is a lot of fun! 🙂

Ripper Street is definitely a good show. I hope you’re able to watch more of it.

      Thanks for visiting!

  28. I love Race To The Edge! It is such a cute show!

  29. Ah I see you love a good murder mystery here.?Which reminds me I need to finish off Sherlock!

    • I do have a tendency to watch murder mysteries. 🙂 I definitely recommend finishing Sherlock!

      Thanks for visiting. 🙂

  30. Sherlock is such a good show! The slim chance of new episodes is the only downside of Benedict and Martin becoming so popular and in demand!

    • Yes, Sherlock is great. If they do decide to make more episodes, I hope everyone comes back for it. Otherwise it just wouldn’t feel right.

      Thanks for commenting. 🙂

  31. Ooo!! I spy lots of favorites on your list. Love ‘Murdoch,’ ‘Miss Fisher’ and of course, “North & South,” which is one of the most beautiful period dramas… EVER!! 🙂

    Thanks for visiting Finding Wonderland.

  32. Oh Miss Fisher’s and Murdoch were both so fun. I haven’t watched Frasier in ages! Hmmm!
