Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Goals for 2023

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

1. Encourage more people to sign up to become reviewers for Long and Short Reviews. I’ve convinced a few friends join, and they’ve all had a wonderful time discovering new authors and sharpening their writing skills. If you’d like to help me reach this goal, all of the details on how to join can be found on the Become a Reviewer page. Tell them that Astilbe sent you.

2. Whittle down my TBR list. As a lot of you, I’d guess, I have so many books on there that I’ve been meaning to read but haven’t quite gotten around to picking up yet.

3. Reread old favorites this winter. There’s something comforting about knowing exactly what will happen next and spending time with beloved characters.

4. Discover some great new anthologies, especially if they’re in the mystery or speculative fiction genres.

5. Listen to more audiobooks. They’re especially helpful when you’re doing mundane, repetitive tasks like shoveling snow or doing household chores that require the use of your body but not necessarily your mind.

6. Play fewer games on my cellphone. There’s nothing wrong with gaming, of course, but I find it’s cutting into my reading time and would like to readjust my priorities.

7. Alternatively, maybe I could find some literary or bookish games to play on my phone?

8. Read a romance novel. I rarely venture into that genre, but I have found a few titles in it that I truly enjoyed.

9. Try some non-gory horror again. This pandemic has squelched most of my interest in the genre, but maybe now I’ll be ready to give it a shot as long as it isn’t related to disease in any way.

10. Visit the physical branch of my local library again. I miss making friendly small talk with the nice librarians there.

If you have any book or game suggestions for me based on these goals, I’d sure like to hear them.

  2. Listening to more audiobooks will be fun!

  3. 2. Whittle down my TBR list — don‘t we all! 😝
    3. Reread old favorites this winter — I‘m thinking about re-reading Tolkien…
    4. Discover some great new anthologies, especially if they’re in the mystery or speculative fiction genres. — Pretty good: The Best Science Fiction of the Year: Volume Six
by Neil Clarke and Dominion: An Anthology of Speculative Fiction from Africa and the African Diaspora by Zelda Knight
    5. Listen to more audiobooks — the Peter Grant / Rivers of London series is absolutely brilliant as audio…
    7. literary or bookish games — sadly, no recs. If you find some, let me know! I spend too much time with silly idle games…

    • Thank you for those recommendations. I appreciate them and am looking them up now.

If I find some great literary or bookish games, I’ll use them for a future freebie post for Top Ten Tuesday. 🙂

A great list! I’ll be keeping an eye out for any anthologies you discover.

  5. Thanks for stopping by my post this morning. These sound like great goals. I too am interested in listening to audiobooks. Good luck with your goals!

  6. I need to quit watching videos on Facebook! I should be reading all of the books that I own !!! 🙂

  7. Great list of goals! I also want to re-read more (it’s so cozy) and listening to audiobooks is indeed so helpful.

    Hope you achieve your goals

  9. Great goals! Audiobooks have become my preferred format recently. I just get more read (and done) with them. Good luck with all your goals this year 🙂

  10. I read a book last week about the polio epidemic and the woman who helped develop the vaccine, and I kept thinking about our current vaccine situation and pandemic……interesting but too soon!

  11. Great goals! I have a long TBR to get through as well and I love listening to audiobooks while I’m doing mundane tasks, like you mentioned.

    Good luck 🙂

  12. Great goals! I’m trying to whittle my TBR list down this year, too. It just seems to grow faster than I can delete titles from it. ;D Good luck with your goals, and thanks for commenting on my blog earlier.

    • You’re welcome. Good luck with whittling down your TBR list. They sure do seem to have minds of their own sometimes based on how fast they grow. 😀

  13. You have some interesting, unusual goals here. I have a hard time getting into romances. I like a romance along with another genre (sometimes) or if there is more than just romance, but it is hard to tell ahead of time what will work for me. And I have never tried an audiobook. Although so many people love them.

    • I hear you there! I struggle with plain romances, too.

It took me a while to get into audiobooks, to be honest, but now I like them. 🙂

  14. I really need to listen to more audiobooks as well, just when I’m doing boring and mundane tasks. I never think of it.

  15. Reading more on my TBR is a must for me as well! For me, that basically just consists of the unread books on my shelf. Defintely need to work on reading more of them. 🙂 Hope you accomplish all of your goals in 2023! Best of luck and thanks so much for visiting my website this week.

  16. Good luck on your 2023 goals.

  17. I hope you’re able to reach these goals. I also get sucked into my phone, but usually on something mind-numbing like TikTok. Then I realize I just frittered away time I could have spent reading and get annoyed with myself.

  18. All great goals, Astilbe. I looked at the reviewer website, but as I review all books I read on my blog, that won’t work for me. We have some similar goals. Good luck with your goals.

  19. Looks like lots of people have joined you in wanting to reduce our TBR. My first step toward accomplishing that is to reduce the number of ARCs I request. It’s just a change of focus – I’m curious to see how that will work out! 😉 Thanks for the visit.

  20. This is such a great list of goals! I definitely need to read more anthologies as well. I wish you the best in achieving all of these!

  21. I feel like I haven’t read horror in forever! Which is sad because it was absolutely my favorite genre when I was younger. Have a great week.

  22. Good luck with your reading goals! There’s definitely something comforting about re-reading old favorites.

  23. Good Luck with your goals!

  24. Those are all great goals!

  25. If you learn of any bookish games to play on the phone, let me know! I’m tired of the games I have and I wish there were more intelligent ones. Have fun with all of these, it sounds like you’re trying to branch out more and that’s great.

  26. I want to reread some favorites this year, too. It’s easy to get distracted by all the new releases, but I very much want to revisit some favorite books.

  27. I love listening to audiobooks while I clean. It makes unpleasant chores go by a lot faster 🙂 Good luck with all your goals!

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

  28. I love your list! As for non-gory horror, I’m a huge fan of T. Kingfisher (mainly because I’m a huge wuss), and I usually listen to audiobooks while I play games on my phone! Audiobooks are a total lifesaver for me.

    • Thank. Yeah, I’ve read one Kingfisher book so far and really liked it. I’ll have to see what else she’s written!

  29. Rereading is one of my big goals, too. Especially since I didn’t reread at all last year! That’s the first time in a long time. I find it so comforting, too. Good luck with your goals this year!

  30. I definitely am working on my TBR, too. This is year five of my Tackling the TBR challenge.

  31. I’m hoping to re-read a few favorites this year too. Good luck with these goals!

  32. Great list. I enjoy reviewing books, but my time has been limited the last few years, and I have so many unread books here that need my attention. Reading books again is so much fun. Do you often discover things you never noticed before?

Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog last week.

  33. Awesome list! I hope you will be able to accomplish the goals ( the playing games is also difficult for me…)

  34. Good luck with your goals. YES to less phone time. I really need to get off TikTok and pick up a book.

  35. These are great goals! Those phone games are big time sucks, aren’t they? Now, for me, it’s Duolingo. I tell myself it’s at least educational, but it does take away from reading time. I also want to work on that TBR pile of mine. It’s definitely an ongoing goal. Good luck with all of your goals!
