The sleigh skimmed over the snow, the harness bells jingling in the crisp air. Overhead, the Milky Way, with its countless stars, lit up the black winter sky.

“It’s a lovely night,” he offered, trying to start a friendly conversation.

“I hadn’t noticed.”

“Try to understand my side, Paulette,” he said. “I refused to dissemble or mislead, just to please you or anyone else at the restaurant. I have to say and do what I believe is right.”

She tossed her head for dramatic emphasis and sniffed. “Hmph. I feel the exact same way. And to be perfectly honest, Mr. McFarland, I don’t like you. How’s that for plain-speaking?”

He chuckled in an attempt to lighten the tone. “Right at the moment, you’re not being too likeable yourself, sweetheart. But I’m willing to overlook it.”

“I’m not your sweetheart!” She turned to glare at him, and then clamped her mouth shut, refusing to say another word.

When they drew up in front of her home, Paulette didn’t wait for Brent to come around to her side of the sleigh. She jumped down and raced up the pathway. By the time they neared the door, Brent was right behind her. He reached over her shoulder and pulled the bell.

Papa opened the door with a smile, then stepped back to let his daughter hurry inside. “Everything all right?” he asked, looking from one to the other with a frown.

“We had a little disagreement,” Brent explained. “About politics.”

“Ah,” her father said. “I think I understand.” Lifting his brow, he looked at his daughter again. “Where are your manners, Paulie? Aren’t you going to thank the gentleman and tell him goodnight?”

Squaring her shoulders, Paulette folded her arms across her chest and met Brent’s gaze. “Good-bye!” She had the satisfaction of slamming the door in the exasperating man’s face before bursting into tears.

Her father put his arms around her and held her close. “What’s wrong, child?”

“Oh Papa,” she wailed. “I think I’m in love with that horrible man.”
