He Claimed Her Body. . .

Though an Easterner born and bred, Trista Sinclair fell in love with the rugged Texas terrain the moment she arrived to join her fiancé. But the warnings she heard around the ranch about the dangers awaiting her in the wild terrain of Texas come to life when she is captured while out riding by a blue-eyed Comanche warrior…a man whose sensual touch is far more dangerous than his brute strength.

But Wanted Her Heart And Soul. . .

Lance Barrett has never been tempted to take a captive until he sees a beautiful woman with hair like spun gold taming a magnificent stallion. Trista Sinclair is his half-brother’s fiancé, and the perfect means of revenge against the white father who rejected him. Yet what Lance wants most is the one thing Trista swears never to give–her willing surrender. Torn between the life each has known and a desire neither can resist, only together can they claim a love as vast and wild as the West itself…

Lance rode slowly back to the ranch at sundown. During his time alone in the wilderness, he had aged emotionally. The truth of his father’s feelings, coupled with the painful acknowledgment of his mother’s death, had robbed him of his naiveté. His youthful enthusiasm was gone, buried beneath the grim acceptance of the realities of life. After tending to his horse, he started toward the house, feeling more alone than he ever had before.

The house was seemingly deserted as he entered. He was pleased at the prospect of being left alone and was just starting up the stairs when he heard voices coming from the study. Lance knew his father hadn’t wanted to see anyone and grew angry that someone else had been admitted to his sanctuary. He moved to the door to try to identify the man speaking with his father.

“My sister should never have married you! It is because of you she is dead!”

Lance was shocked. His mother had often spoken of her brother, Chief Lone Elk, and of the bad blood between him and his father. The knowledge that the chief was there shocked him.

“She’s dead, I have nothing left! My life is over!”

As Lance heard his father claim again that he had nothing left in his life, he hardened his heart even more against him.

The study door suddenly opened, and for the first time, Lance came face-to-face with his uncle. He met the chief’s gaze.

“You are Lone Elk?”

“I am.”

“I’m Lance. Why have you come?”

“I have come for you.” Lone Elk respected Lance. The boy exhibited none of the fear he’d expected from a child raised by whites. His mother had taught him well.

“Why?” Lance challenged.

“It is what your mother would have wanted.”

Lance knew his mother had always emphasized the importance of learning about his Comanche background.

“Pa?”

George was sitting at his desk, an empty whiskey bottle on the desktop. “What?” His voice was slurred.

“What do you want me to do?” He longed for his father to declare that he loved him and couldn’t live without him.

“Lone Elk wants to take you with him so you can learn about your mother’s people. The decision is yours, Lance.” His voice was emotionless as he looked away.

His answer extinguished what hope Lance held in his heart. Lance silently berated himself for having been foolish enough to think his father cared for him.

“It is what your mother would have wanted,” the chief said.

At his words, Lance looked up at him. “I will go with you.”

Jane Austen’s most famous lovers, Darcy and Elizabeth, return in a tale of romance, adventure, and danger set in the heart of the Caribbean.

NO GREATER LOVE

Darcy’s sudden, passionate kiss sweeps Elizabeth into a bliss she has never known…but their love is short-lived. On a field of honor, Wickham, once again, engages in an irresponsible act, which leaves Darcy mortally wounded and Elizabeth broken. Refusing to leave Darcy’s side, the last vestiges of her reputation are shattered, and when Elizabeth sees Darcy in his coffin, she is ruined in more ways than one. Devastated and without hope, reluctantly she agrees to accompany friends to Grenada, a Caribbean island on the brink of revolution.

Things are not what they seem. Darcy hasn’t died, but Elizabeth is gone and he fears it is too late to recapture what he has lost. As he struggles to recuperate, he must put aside his pride and his heritage in order to find the only woman he will ever love. Never before has Darcy sacrificed so much for a passion he fought against so vehemently. And never before has Elizabeth’s strength of character been stronger – it is the only thing standing between her and an end that doesn’t include Darcy.

“Papa, are you in there? I would like to speak to you before you go,” Elizabeth called through the study door.

Mr. Bennet was already at the door, opening it. Elizabeth entered and began to speak but stopped short when she saw Darcy. For a moment, she was speechless.

Mr. Bennet looked from one to the other. It was Darcy who spoke first.

He cleared his throat. “Good morning, Miss Bennet. I am sorry that we are not meeting under happier circumstances. I will take my leave, so that you may speak to your father alone.” He made his way toward her to the door.

As if awakened from a dream, she suddenly cried, “No,” before he reached the door. He stopped, a surprised look on his face. They both looked at Mr. Bennet.

“Lizzy,” Mr. Bennet offered. “I think perhaps you might want to have a word with Mr. Darcy. I will go and have my breakfast.” He tried to sound lighthearted, but Elizabeth knew he was hiding his dread from her.

As soon as they were alone, Elizabeth went to the window. She could not look in Darcy’s face. She was afraid her countenance would reveal all the tumult of emotions she was feeling.

“Mr. Darcy, why are you here?” she asked finally.

“Your father asked me to be his second in his duel with Mr. Wickham. He felt that I, being a gentleman, would possess the necessary knowledge and…” he groped for the word, “authority, to see that all proceeded fairly with adherence to the rules.”

“Rules?” she cried and turned upon him. “Rules. Mr. Darcy, what good can come of this? Can you not do something to stop it? My father—” Her voice broke and she turned away from him once more, burying her face in her handkerchief. “My father is an elderly man, a country gentleman. What does he know of dueling?” The tears welled in her eyes, and then broke free and ran down her cheeks. She wished he would rush to her and throw his arms around her and hold her to his breast. Instead, he stood apart and spoke calmly.

“I do think that some accord can be reached without resorting to violence,” he said.

About the Author:

I’ve always been a storyteller. When I was little, I used to tell my sister stories before we went to sleep. Most of them were serials – Superman and the like. It never occurred to me until much later in life that I should try my hand at writing.

Most of my career, I’ve been a music teacher. I’ve found music such a help when crafting a story. I actually see the structure of a book as if it was a musical composition. As for the nuts and bolts of my life, I grew up in the Chicago area and was a teacher there for quite a few years. I had a chance to teach at an international school in Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania, and I spent two years there. After adopting my son, we spent four years at an international school in the Philippines. During that time, I began writing. Now I live in the western U.S.

Most of my work has been screenplays. Over the years, I’ve won or placed well in competitions. I’m telling you this so you don’t think I sat down one day and wrote a novel out of the blue. I’ve spent many years working and learning.

A long time ago someone called me “an insatiable romantic.” I hope that’s still true.

The last man had unkempt, long, sandy-colored hair. He wore a crumpled, hooded camouflage jacket and baggy gray pants. A long scar ran across one side of his face, starting at his ear and running through his beard, parting it with a jagged white line. He didn’t say a word. He simply nodded at the poker in her hand and shook his head, silently telling her to drop her weapon.

Sensing that any attempt to fight him would be futile, she let it fall to the ground. “You can take the money. I don’t have—”

“Shut up,” the handsome blond barked. A vein on his forehead bulged as he scowled.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. She prayed they would take what they wanted and leave.

Handsome stepped in front of her and placed the barrel of his handgun between her eyes. “Tell us where it is.”

“What are you doing?” The man with the scar strolled over and stood next to her. In her peripheral vision, she could make out his intense, pale, lifeless eyes.

He leaned close to her face so his warm breath touched her cheek. “This is all wrong.”

A small squeal emanated from her throat. He was too close. Too scary. Killer. The word rang through her mind. The scar, those dead eyes, and his demeanor gave the impression of a lethal, terrifying man.

“What do you mean? Our intel is good.” The vein on Handsome’s forehead throbbed to life.

He stepped onto his front porch and couldn’t help but stop to look at the display of color in front of him. Another gift from Lily. The blooms she’d coaxed to weave up the posts and across the railings stretched outward to reach the late afternoon sun.

Jensgar could picture the sunny day she’d given him this gift as if it were yesterday. She’d been working in the fields helping the pack farmers with planting their new crops. Lily had the gift of fertility, among others, and shared it with anyone who needed it. He had watched over her while she remained in the fields, not a hard task in the least. He felt a certain contentment when he was with her that he’d not felt in well over one hundred years.

Lily had spent most of the day out in the hot fields. He’d gone to her to escort her back to the pack house. She’d finished the second bottle of water he’d made her drink, not wanting her to become dehydrated, as they’d passed his cottage. She stopped midstride and stared at his humble home. He had been a bit self-conscious when she walked up to the gardens and sunk her hands into the earth.

Vines had sprouted almost instantly and wrapped themselves around the front railing before climbing up the timber walls. When she’d finished the front of his house, Lily stood back and viewed her creation with a satisfied smile. At the time, Jensgar hadn’t realized how poignant and appropriate her next words would be.

“Something to remember me by.” She’d smiled at him but nothing could hide her sadness.

Now, Jensgar buried his face in the soft blooms and breathed deeply. For a brief second he felt her presence, but all too soon it was gone. In time, Lily would understand that he’d done what was best for her future. She was a powerful omega destined to lead a pack, not to settle down with a has-been. Sure, he’d been the general of armies, chosen by the king himself, but now as he approached his four hundredth year it was only a matter of time before he’d be retired for someone younger.

Enjoy an Excerpt

Beatrice stared dumbstruck at Lord Knowlton’s back.

Lady Sherbourne, her godmama, had introduced them, hissing behind her fan, “The only son of an old duke. Nothing like jumping in with both feet.” And then she had carted Mama off to the card room, leaving Beatrice to get on as best she could.

Lord Knowlton, in turn, had given Beatrice a look like she was a crate of dry goods dropped at the delivery door.

Now, after a truly dreadful dance, he wasn’t even giving her that. Instead, without so much as a bow, he was chasing after a girl whose tiny bodice had been performing heroic, if ultimately futile, work in aid of public decency.

Beatrice looked after him, furrowing her brow, the shock of his rudeness rooting her in place. So little was demanded of the clod—light conversation, a few observations on the weather this time of year and, finally, after they’d both decided they would rather die than be paired off again, he would escort her from the floor and they’d declare it the nicest half-hour either of them had ever spent.

But, no. The slithering reptile was completely gone. She stared after him in bewildered outrage until the sound of the room changed. No music for the moment and no sound of footsteps walking on and off the floor, only a low chatter ebbing away.

Beatrice looked around, the hairs on her arms standing up. She was suddenly alive to the fact that she was the only person conspicuously still on the vast ballroom floor—almost in the centre. She ground her teeth, incandescent with fear and rage, as her face went a telltale red.

How dare London be such a crushing disappointment? How dare it serve up a man who was no better than a… a…? There were no names she could think of that would not be an insult to idiots, vermin, and bastards.

Heads were beginning to swing toward her and Beatrice felt her cheeks turn white, leached of colour. Should she walk backward until she could melt into the crowd or pretend to answer a wave across the room and dash off purposefully? Flying out of the room was hardly possible. The back of her neck prickled and she could feel eyes sweeping around the ballroom, stopping on her lone figure.

If Mama and Papa had allowed her even one visit to the local assembly, she might not be so utterly at sea. Still, Mama would charge to her rescue, if only she could be found. Beatrice stretched her neck and raised herself onto her tiptoes, ready to fabricate an acquaintance over near the tea board—the shame of it making her eyes burn. Blast that man.

In the dreadful silence, she heard a scuffing sound and turned to watch as a soldier in a scarlet uniform broke past the wall of bystanders. He walked toward her, his steps unnaturally loud in the silence. “Thank you for waiting for me,” he called, his voice amused but apologetic, and loud enough to carry to the edge of the floor. “I’ve been looking forward to this set all evening.”

He bowed over her hand and whispered a command: “Chin up. Smile like you’re happy to see me.”

Beatrice squeezed this stranger’s fingers, feeling an immediate lightness. Her breath broke as she exhaled, but she was proud of her control. Her lips arranged themselves into the proper shape.

“Good show,” he commended, and the praise warmed her. “Captain Gracechurch, at your service. Your name, miss?”

Rumors of Wars – A short essay
An early proofreader of the Saga of Nichole 5, Part One, “Friend & Ally” noted that the story was basically built around three battles along the fringes of the city of Portland, former Oregon. I liked that idea so much that I broke the book into three parts, reflecting what he had noted!

I had not at all planned it this way: months before, what became “Friend and Ally” was a writing exercise called ‘Defiant’ where I first met Nichole and saw her initial adventure with IJN Kongo the day after her arrival in Portland. Weeks later I saw her riding with Muller’s horse cavalry troopers up the Columbia River valley on a ‘routine expedition’… we all know how those turn out! It was only in the late spring of 2018 when I decided to turn all this into a novel that I wrote what became the bridge (swidt?) between the two: the attack on the Lewis & Clark Bridge, downriver from the City.

I wouldn’t call it a ‘lazy’ form of writing, but battles take on a life of their own, pulling the writer, story, and characters along in their wake. The cannibal army’s first assault against the City’s main bridges ended quickly: light infantry against high-explosive tipped missiles is a foregone conclusion. Their second effort has them succeed and across the bridge into former Oregon territory. This battle takes place over three days and led me places I never saw: Nichole laying in the weeds, not breathing; a good friend later found dead of a nerve gas… when you’re a harmless middle-age fluffball like me, never deliberately setting out to hurt anyone, surprises like these are more of a shock. My wife reached the point where, with me sitting alone in the dark on our deck, she wouldn’t ask about my silly DayJob but instead, “who died, now?”

Similarly, the siege of Fort Reilly was five days with a casualty figure – for the City forces – over fifty percent. Anyone with a military background just stopped and re-read that figure; yes, it’s horrific. Nichole died. Fortunately, “mostly dead is still somewhat alive!” Many stories, once a battle is over, quickly follow the leads somewhere else, I chose to linger a few more days to see and tell about the fort’s repair, the care of the wounded, and the laying to rest of the dead.

It was a fascinating experience! I’ll end with just a few pulls that, hopefully, make you curious enough to read the books… and post a review!

F&A (The Ship):

She’d pulled herself onto the scaffolding, up the small ladder, and looked out north from next to the empty flagpole atop the bridge at her right. Staring into the distance, she toggled the radio.

“” She paused. About to take a step that no one like her had never, ever taken before. In a timeslice in her mind, she saw her family, Her Majesty, Joe, and Gil…

“”

And the world changed.

Kongo was free of the pier and headed north, yet not to where she was. She heard the roar of the four missiles; at this short range…

She saw the impacts. Only a dull thud reached her ears.

Far, far down her processor chain, it was logged that humans were dead by her orders.

F&A (The Bridge):

General Tessmer turned forward. Miles went by. At one point he raised his hand to cup the earbud on his left. A nod to the air.

“I want you on the barge assaulting the opposite bank.” He again half turned. “Can you shoot to kill?”

“I don’t know.”

He bit off a curse.

“Can you at least take orders?!”

“Absolutely.”

“Then at the cost of your life, help my Engineers blow that bridge!”

“I obey.” She bowed slightly.

He saw that and turned back to the barely illuminated road sliding under them.

“Thank you.” She heard him whisper to the wind.

F&A (The Fort):

Oh no. A line of eight more flatbed transporters. The missiles were already vertical… through the drone, she watched them launch.

There was nothing she could do. She radioed the gunboats. The flotilla Captain said that he could just see their dam. She fed him the coordinates of the fort, requesting close-in salvos once in range. He briefly tried to object about “shelling our own men” until she shouted him down, that friendly-fire casualties were preferable to a general massacre.

She never heard his reply. The second group of missiles went for the dam. Not to break it: impossible. But crippling the controls beyond repair? Very possible.

Nichole was tossed about, sometimes in the air, sometimes against walls and floor. The building about her collapsed. Had I been human, I’d be dead, she thought. She thought of Gil; did he just go through this?

She landed hard but was not broken. She twisted to avoid the larger pieces of concrete and debris that were raining down on her. She wasn’t crushed by any particular thing, but she stopped estimating the depth of the ruin above her when it got beyond three meters.

Power loss; signal loss. The weight from pressed down onto her. She flexed just slightly. No: trapped. No worries! She had almost a full charge, so she’d be aware for another twenty hours, if not more! After that, once they dug her out, all they had to do was plug her back in…

Who, besides Gil, would know to do that?

For the first time in her life, a sound like a sob escaped her.

THE AMAZING UNFOLDING WORLD OF MACHINE CIVILIZATION SERIES

by Clayton Barnett

A history beginning in our near future, these stories are set in a world where the US dollar has been displaced as the world’s reserve currency, prompting its economic and political collapse, with a few areas able to hold onto civilization.
At the same time, across the Pacific, under a resurgent economy brought about by the implementation of new technology and deregulation, three Japanese companies produce breakthroughs in both artificial intelligence and robotics.  These newly made people exhibit an odd interest in the goings-on of the former United States.
To-date, my chronicling of this interest of theirs has led to stories that populate five novels, which I would like to share with everyone now!
*****
The Fourth Law – In the near future, 23-year-old apprentice nurse Lily Barrett lives in a shattered time.  Following its economic collapse, the US has devolved into a group of a few barely functional smaller states and vast swathes of barbarian badlands.  His sister has been missing for years, and her father, after earning the opprobrium of most of the world for running a state terror organization, presumed dead.
Two things keep her going: her live-in job at a small, Catholic orphanage in the city of Waxahachie, Republic of Texas, and Ai, her odd but dear friend, whom she met online; a young woman who only shows herself to Lily as a rendered CG image.
Troubled by her past, haunted by her name, and facing an uncertain future, Lily seems only a quiet, simple life.  But, that past and her present conspire against her.

*****

Echoes of Family Lost – Alive!  After four years believing her older sister lost and presumed dead in the horrible Breakup of the United States, Lily Barrett gets word from her dear friend, Ai – and Ai’s family of Machine Civilization – that Callie Barrett is very likely alive… but over 900 miles away in Knoxville.
Using the resources of her and Ai’s family, Lily puts together a search party to go find Callie:  old, broken, and burnt Orloff – an expert in surviving in the Badlands, Ai’s little sister, Fausta – her machine mind controlling a Combat Android to protect her friend, all together in a cart pulled by their sturdy pony, Clyde.

It’s almost a thousand miles to go, with something very odd trying to limit their ability to communicate over distance and even to cross bridges.  A chance meeting along the way in Huntsville, former Alabama, wrecks their plans, and puts all of their lives in danger.

*****

Cursed Hearts – Even with San Diego occupied by the Mexican Army, Katarina Sosabowski pursues her MBA at UCSD, and is happy to welcome and put up her visiting step-cousin from Japan, Christopher Dennou, for a night so he can complete his enrollment the following day.
But a minor earthquake brings a major surprise:  Chris’s younger sister, Maya, murders their mother and escapes Neuroi Institute, the research facility that created them.
While Chris and ‘Cat’ grow closer to one another, Maya inexorably crosses an ocean and half a continent to take back her brother, killing anyone who gets in her way.

*****

Friend and Ally – Model 5 is a prototype designed to fit seemlessly into human society.  A meeting in Tokyo derails Nichole’s planned training as she is dispatched to Portland, former Oregon; the last working deep water port on the West Coast of the imploding US.
There, under her cover as a Graduate Engineering Student, she is to do her utmost to nurture the people and politics of the City-State into a Friend and Ally of the Japanese Empire.  But from the first day in her new home, all of Nichole’s plans go awry.
Beset by those who want this small lamp of Western Civilization snuffed out, Nichole must find within herself the courage and ability to protect her new friends, at whatever consequence to herself.

*****

Foes and Rivals – After residing nearly a year in Portland, Nichole’s life seems to finally settle down: with her classes, friends, and lover.  But troubling rumors about secret deals between the City’s master and the savage horsemen to the east reach her ears.

Drew took a steadying breath before hauling his rifle up to take aim. The war cries from the red skin were louder now and he could see his attacker had brown eyes. His hands shook. If he didn’t shoot soon, the man would be close enough to wrestle him to the ground and overpower him with the knife. He squinted his eyes, blew out one last breath, and pulled the trigger.

STEALING…

Saying Jett Matthews has it easy is an understatement. He loves being the youngest son of a rockstar. A day doesn’t go by that Jett isn’t working his Devil’s Spawn status to the max. But Jett is more than he appears to be. He’s co-owner of a huge company that grows and sells marijuana. It’s all legit…well, it is now, but there’s a hitch: he and his Spawn partner, Marley Connor, have been building the business right under their parents’ noses, and they are none the wiser. When Jett and Marley have to come out from behind the shadows, it’s Devin King who helps make the impossible happen, and that seals the deal on Jett’s heart forever.

THE RICHEST TREASURE

Devin King is serious about her college education. She’s at UT Austin on an academic scholarship, and she means to turn this opportunity into a serious career. When sexy, trash-talking, full of swagger, too gorgeous for his own good, Jett Matthews sits down next to her in Civics, her world turns on its side, and she can’t say she minds all that much. Sure, she made him work for it, but everything worth having requires a little effort, especially for Jett. But the prize is so much sweeter after a little sweat equity, and Devin means to have it all, and for it to last a lifetime.

“Did you really use all the sugar? That was like half a cup.”

I glanced down and to my right, a smile automatically forming on my face. Large blue eyes behind tortoiseshell glasses, framed with long lashes, blinked back at me. The chick tapping her foot in annoyance wasn’t wearing any makeup, but damn she was pretty.

“If you want, I can dip my finger in your coffee. I’m way sweeter than this—”

“Seriously?” She cut me off, reaching around me for the less tasty packets of raw sugar and accidentally knocking over the small container of wooden stir sticks. “It’s too early for lame pickup lines.” She righted her mess and then ripped open five little brown packets, dumping them into her drink.

I took another sip of my now perfectly sweetened coffee, admiring the way the sunlight streaming in through the windows made her strawberry blonde hair shine. “It’s never too early for flirting. And as far as pickup lines go, that was a good one.”

She snapped her lid back on her cup, and then turned to the door. Her backpack hit the container of wooden sticks, causing it to spill all over again. I bit my lip to keep from laughing as she picked them up a second time.

“I’m Jett, what’s your—”

“Nice to meet you, Jett.” The blue-eyed clumsy beauty didn’t even bother to glance my way before she purposefully walked out the double glass doors.

I watched her stride away, her creamy legs on display and her long hair swishing behind her. That chick had straight up turned me down.

And that wasn’t what normally happened when girls saw me for the first time. I was handsome—don’t be a hater, it’s genetics—and my smile dropped panties. Lots of them. That sugar pickup line was great. I knew because it had worked for me in the past.

Tate and Clay’s newest case has all the earmarks of typical investigative work: lies, deception, collusion, and a dead body – except the body was found in Fetish Alley, and nothing that happens there is typical.

Read an Excerpt

Clay had experienced many things in his life as a soldier and later as an investigator. Nothing, however, had prepared him for standing in a restaurant kitchen, among the hustle and bustle of a busy afternoon’s late lunch rush, surrounded by a number of wriggling, joggling, moving, and quite frankly unappetising cuisines.

He’d drawn the straw to interview Penny Whitfield, the owner of the restaurant in Fetish Alley, an establishment aptly called Moving Feast. He could see why.

He swallowed his discomfort as Penny, dressed in chef’s whites and shouting out instructions to the kitchen staff, deftly sliced the head off a wriggling eel and slapped it onto a plate. She was a tall, large-boned woman, with strands of blond hair escaping from her plastic head covering. Clay imagined her a Valkyrie, statuesque and capable.

She continued to slice eel into thick pieces. “Despite the name, we still get people who don’t fancy their food still moving when they get it. Bloody traditionalists.” She snorted. “Still, they pay the same price if I serve it to them dead so what the hell, I say. Money is money.”

Clay was trying hard to keep the rising swell of bile from rushing up and choking him. He’d never been one to think too hard where his food came from, and seeing it up close and personal wasn’t in his best interests, or his stomach’s.

He tried to make himself heard above the clatter of dishes and noise, and to ignore the fact the eel head was staring at him in reproach.

“So what time did you say you last saw Dixon Barnaby at the club?”

Penny paused what she was doing, and her face scrunched up. Her brown eyes darted upward. “Around eleven pm, I think. The lot of us left right after he did, about half an hour later I believe.”

“And you didn’t notice anything wrong with Mr Barnaby? Did he give any sign he was feeling unwell?”

He watched in fascination as her gloved hands reached into a bucket of wriggling ants and scattered them across another bowl of still wriggling eel.

Five Musts Every Story in Your Genre Should Have by S. A. Crosby – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Five Musts Every Story in Your Genre Should Have

I write crime stories. This genre wasn’t my first choice. I tried writing scifi ,horror, and mainstream literature. I think what appealed to me about crime and mystery stories and what I believe are themes and motifs every crime story should have are 1. a strong protagonist. 2. A strong setting. 3. a great antagonist. 4. Good supporting characters. 5. an intriguing plot.

1. A strong main character. The main character or MC is our guide through the mean streets and dusty backroads of a noir crime novel. He or she is our tarnished knight. An honorable person in a world that is corrupt at its core. They are the ones that will balance the scales and make sure the guilty are (mostly) punished.

2. A strong setting. The setting serves as our field of battle so to speak. it’s where all the action takes place. It’s where our MC makes their final stand. It’s also their world. It is the Rorschach test that shows us how the MC is similar and different from their surroundings. Setting is also what gives the story atmosphere. It can be a major part of the tone. In a crime novel it is the world the MC is trying to save or fight against. It is where the reader is transported when they open the book. It needs to be interesting and real.

3.A great Antagonist. The ying to the yang of the MC a great antagonist is essential to the success of any story but this is especially true in a crime novel. The antagonist has to be a credible threat to the MC. He or she doesn’t have to be a genius but they should be determined. They should be someone who can stop the MC from completing their tasks. They can be over the top or quietly menacing but they must be nearly as interesting as the MC so that the reader is invested in their downfall.

4. Good supporting characters. It’s an old trope but an accurate one. Ever hero needs a good sidekick or team. Magnum P.I had Rick, T.C and Higgins. Sherlock Holmes had Watson. Elvis Cole has Joe Pike. Eazy Rawlins has Mouse. The supporting character is the connective tissue that helps the MC survive the trials and tribulations that they will go through. They can provide physical backup and emotional support. Crime novels usually go to dark places and a true complex MC will need to vent, to release that darkness to someone. Supporting characters are the anchors that keep the MC from losing themselves

5. An intriguing Plot. If we can liken a book to a car then the MC is the driver and the plot is the engine. It’s the thing that propels the book forward. it’s the train we are all riding on when we are reading a great book. The plot has to rattle and hum. It’ has to give us a journey to go on. Without plot the best characters, the best setting , the best dialogue are worthless. They are just nails sitting in a can for a house you never built.

I handle the bodies.

That’s what I say when people ask me what I do for a living. I find that gets one of two responses. They drift away to the other side of the room and give me a sideways glance the rest of the night or they let out a nervous laugh and move the conversation in another, less macabre direction. I could always say I work at a funeral home, but where’s the fun in that?

Every once in a while when I was in the Corps, someone would see me at Starbucks that modern mecca Wal-Mart in my utility uniform. Sometimes they’d catch me in my dress blues after a military ball just trying to grab something before heading back to the base. They would walk up to me and say, “Thank you for your service.” I’d mumble something like “No, thank you for your support” or some other pithy rejoinder, and they would wander away with a nice satisfied look on their faces. Sometimes what I wanted to say was, “I took care of the bodies. The bodies with the legs blown off or the hands shredded. The bodies full of ball bearings and nails and whatever some kid could find to build his IED. I loaded the bodies up and dragged them back to the base, then went back out on another patrol and prayed to a God that seemed to be only half-listening that today wasn’t the day that someone would have to take care of my body.”

But I don’t think that would have given them the same warm and fuzzy feeling.
