How I handled the Research for the Book

There were different layers of research involved in developing The Company of Demons. First, as the story is based on an actual serial killer who terrorized Cleveland years ago, I had to research the historical record. I reviewed not only a non-fiction book on the topic, but original newspaper accounts. The papers were particularly helpful in developing a sense of place for certain scenes. The Cleveland Police Historical Society also had some great photos and mementos, and I found a way to work some of this information into the book.

The next level of research was to visit locations where chapters are set. For example, some scenes take place in a popular park. Although I have visited the park several times, I strolled through it again and made a point to note the details. What type of trees grew there? What did the plaques on historical markers commemorate? What food and beverage items did the concession stand sell? All of these details helped to create realistic scenes.

Finally, although I am a trial lawyer by training, I work on civil and not criminal cases. Because my book involves a murder trial, I needed to understand how that would differ from a civil case. One of my close friends is a judge who presided over a trial involving a notorious serial killer. He took an interest in my book and was extremely generous with his time and knowledge to ensure that the trial scenes are accurate. Although I am fortunate to have a friend in his position, I have found that people with expertise are often willing to share it and help an author ‘get it right’.

The brutal murder of a friend leaves lawyer John Coleman stunned and sends shock waves through the city of Cleveland. The technique of the killing recalls memories of the Torso Murderer, who dismembered at least twelve people decades ago and vanished–eluding even the legendary Eliot Ness. Jennifer, the victim’s beautiful daughter, hires John to handle her father’s estate, and romantic feelings for her soon complicate his already troubled marriage. When John finds himself entangled with a cold-blooded biker gang, an ex-cop with a fuzzy past, and the drug-addicted son of the dead man, he struggles to make sense of it all. But he cannot escape a growing sense of dread.

There was never any trouble at the Tam O’Shanter, even on a rocking weekend night, even when one of the Tribe smacked a homer for a go-ahead run. Tim and Karen ran a tight joint, the perfect hideaway to lounge beneath faded posters of ‘70s rock bands and sip a cold one. So when Karen screamed from the seedy alley behind the bar, our little oasis was shattered. Tim bolted for the back door.

I rushed after him and squinted in the bright sunlight. Tim was cradling his wife in his arms. She stared at me vacantly, then broke away and retched. Huddled over the rough asphalt, in her thin T-shirt and faded jeans, Karen reminded me of a fragile little girl. The wastebasket she’d intended to empty lay near her, paper napkins and discared receipts fluttering in the humid breeze. Tim waved a hand toward a Dumpster, its lid flung open, wedged tight against the crumbling brick wall. “Don’t look.”

But I did.
The sight of a naked body, sprawled across plastic, garbage bags, was impossible to miss. Or part of a body, really, because the head was gone. So was everything below the waist. The hairy torso had been split down the middle, and I didn’t need to be a pathologist to know that someone had scooped out the guts and the lungs and the heart. Flies droned incessantly and, in the summer heat, the stench of rancid meat wafted to me. I backed away.

Candui glanced around before she leaned close and whispered, “You’re pregnant, aren’t you?”

The blood rushed from my head.

“You’re so pale,” she said. “It’s true, isn’t it? You’re going to have a baby. You and Richart have been trying for so long…”

“N—no. It’s such shocking news. That’s all.” She couldn’t know, not if I was to protect the life of my child.

Then another thought hit me. Richart, my husband, worked for the zasin. The high king’s army. He was well-ranked, and even better regarded, especially for someone only twenty-eight years old. Our town was mostly controlled by him. He would be the first person to turn me in. My baby would die.

Canadian romance writer Rebecca Fairfax thinks a few months living in an English castle will allow her to test out her research theories about the castle and get new material for her writing. Oh, and she’ll be able to carry out her Brass Ring Sorority sisters’ dare to kiss a duke, too. Only, the whole experience ends up changing her life in a way she could never have seen coming…

Ash Piers isn’t interested in peerage and titles. He’s a freewheeling playboy who’s adopted a hedonistic lifestyle after a disastrous love affair. He thinks the upstart Canadian is a gold-digger of the worst kind, kissing his father, the Duke of Piers, on first greeting, then getting engaged to him a moment later! But, damn, he’s attracted to the woman who’s living in his home for the summer. How’s he, a red-blooded Englishman, supposed to keep his hands off her as propriety and family demand?

But with the castle lurching from one crisis to another, Ash and Rebecca have to work together to ensure his family make it through events that threaten to tear everyone apart. And when an ancient and deadly danger looms, both Ash and Rebecca are forced to conquer all fear—physical and emotional…

“Oh, my God. I’m driving the wrong way!” Rebecca Fairfax quit staring at the lovely wildflowers growing in profusion by the side of the country road and hit the brakes—hard—skidding the back wheel of her cherry-red Honda Gold Wing motorcycle to an abrupt halt.

“Damn it, why can’t everyone the world over commit to driving on the same darn side of the road?” she muttered from under her safety helmet, using her foot to help rotate the heavy bike around to face the correct way. Running late, check. Needing to use the bathroom, check. Losing my bloody mind, as evidenced by my accepting the Ringers’ dare to kiss a duke, check and mate.

After backtracking for a mile, she noted the brown tourist road sign she’d missed the first time. Castle Piers, next exit, with an image of a castle outlined in white. Sixty seconds later she made the turn, loving the sensation of the huge bike vibrating between her thighs while the world lived close, the air sweet with the aroma of honeysuckle, the wind caressing the bare skin of her cheeks. Riding a bike made being human different, somehow more raw and real. No other form of travel could compete. And, thanks to Lacey’s William James Thornton Ш, the powerful bike had been waiting at the five-star hotel when Rebecca had arrived in glorious London last night.

Then Castle Piers came into view and the oh my God stuck in her throat.

Perfection. Surrounded by a vast moat stippled with water lilies and swans a-floating? She half expected the Lady of the Lake to rise and present her with Excalibur. Mesmerized, she rolled back on the throttle, bringing the bike to a standstill, bracing it with her feet and turning off the motor. She kicked out the back stand, and, with one booted foot outstretched to add stability to the motorcycle, leaned back in the leather saddle, determined to take the time to drink in the awesome sight. The sweet, fresh fragrance of early summer assailed her senses and she tipped her head back, eyes closed.

At a warehouse near the London docks, Lord Phineas Carter-Woods surveyed the numerous boxes he’d brought back with him from Mexico. “The ones marked in red will go to Elsworth.” That was the bulk of them. At some point he’d have to visit the estate he had been bequeathed. “Have the rest sent to my brother’s house in Grosvenor Square, and make sure they aren’t put in the attic.”

“Yes, my lord.” Boman, Phinn’s secretary, part-time amanuensis, general factotum, and friend, signaled to one of two carters waiting for instructions. “Have you decided when we’re leaving again?”

That was going to be tricky. “I hope to be on our way to Europe in a month, but I’ve promised my brother I’ll look around for a wife. We’ll take it as it comes, shall we?”

“What you mean to say”—Boman gave Phinn a stern look—“is that you haven’t told his lordship that you’re not staying in England.”

“Let’s just say that I have not had time to divulge all my plans.” Boman was right. Phinn would have to tell his brother, the Marquis of Dorchester, about his intent to leave England again. If only Dorchester and his wife could’ve managed to have a son or two instead of four daughters, they wouldn’t be trying to make Phinn marry. Although, whatever gave them the idea he could do better, he didn’t know.

“He isn’t going to be happy.”

That was putting it mildly. Phinn had decided not to tell his brother he was leaving again until just before he departed. “I’ll stay for the Season. Once he perceives that I have not found a suitable wife, he’ll be glad to see me go again.”

“What happens if some young lady catches your eye?”

Good lord! Boman too? “Why is everyone suddenly trying to put a leg-shackle on me?”

Background of Tinsey Clover by Chelsea Flagg – Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Chelsea Flagg will be awarding $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Background of the Book

Tinsey Clover is smart. She’s brave. Also, she can’t carry a tune to save her life. Oh yeah, plus she’s an elf the size of a chipmunk. When her bizarre magical power grows in and makes her feel like a total outsider in her own village, Tinsey sneaks into the forbidden forest on a journey to find someone more like her. From trolls to dragons, what she discovers along the way challenges everything, and everyone, she thought she knew.

TINSEY CLOVER is the story of a spunky little elfin girl in the Icelandic Bungaborg Forest. She feels frustrated because her village isn’t allowed to leave or interact with anyone else in the forest. Certain there’s more positivity out there than she’s been taught to believe, Tinsey sneaks out of her village and finds herself on quite the journey. Using her great math skills, some quirky magic, and help from some unlikely new friends, Tinsey learns that sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem.

This felt like a timely tale to tell. In this day and age full of exclusion and segregation, I really wanted to write a story of unity and acceptance. It’s even cooler since the protagonist is a young girl who doesn’t feel like she’s big enough to even make a tiny bit of difference. But, she does. She rises above all sorts of stuff and changes things for the better. It’s a nice spray of inspiration for kids to hear that they can cast a big light, no matter how small they are. It’s not an in-your-face message, though. The lessons are subtle enough and don’t take away from the fun characters and quirky situations they find themselves in.

TINSEY CLOVER falls into an early Middle Grade category that’s underserved. Young readers come to a certain point in their progress where they’re ready for a story that’s more adventurous and exciting, but they’re not developmentally ready for the scary, sad, complex topics that come with a lot of Middle grade books. TINSEY CLOVER fills that void. It’s an exciting adventure without being too scary or emotional.

We speed through the forest, zig-zagging between tree trunks so huge not even a giant could wrap his arms around one, let alone find the radius and diameter on the thing. The morning fog’s mostly gone now, which makes it much easier to see the little burst of reds and yellows from the wildflowers that grow here. The most colorful item around though is Aspen’s hair. Although, I must say, it looks less like hair and much more like a blue blur as he races ahead of me on his fox.

Pretty soon, all the head honcho trealfurs come into view, sitting knee to knee to form an oval. At first, each of the trealfurs looks like a tiny ant, but they quickly grow as our foxes dart closer toward the council spot.

Aspen barks sharply, and his fox comes to a halt right away. Of course. My fox, on the other hand, doesn’t even slow down, let alone stop. Maybe it didn’t hear Aspen’s orders, but I know better. This fox is just being cheeky, because that’s how wild animals are with me sometimes. It’s like they know I don’t fit in here, too. All I can do is hold on as my rowdy critter runs at full speed straight into the circle. Trealfurs scatter and roll everywhere, trying not to get run over. And still, my ride barrels forward. That’s another thing about animals: they are not always sensible.

Tucking my chin to my chest, I let go and bounce off, hitting the cold green blanket of moss and leaves on the ground. I don’t have much time to notice how it feels to have the air knocked out of my lungs before my whole body rolls noggin over knees and shoulders over shins. Funny sounds pop out of my mouth that I have absolutely no control over.

“Ooof! Eeef! Ouch!” And, my personal favorite: “AIEEEEE!”

I summersault straight toward Uncle Vondur, the King of the Bungaborg Trealfurs, forcing him to dive out of my way. But, I don’t stop there. No sirree. I careen right past him and into a large bush. Some might think rolling into a bush is a lucky thing, and usually I would agree. Unless it happens to be a very healthy thistle plant. Don’t get me wrong, the purple burrs on a thistle plant are quite beautiful, but just not so much when you’re rolling around in them.

ALREADY GONE

A decade after Logan walked out on Maddy, he returns, and emotions long banked surface, then everything becomes complicated and dangerous.

DEADLY PURPOSE

Thrown together, and neither is happy about it, Meg and Declan navigate their unwanted growing attraction as they fight to keep Meg alive.

Read an Excerpt from Already Gone:

She chewed her bottom lip, then gave the knob a slow turn. The door opened silently. Keeping her body outside the door in case she needed to run, she flipped on the light to the kitchen. Sinks and dishwasher against the far wall, racks of baking supplies to her left, the aroma of dark roast told her the coffeemaker was doing its job. Everything looked as it should—except the storeroom door was closed, and the storeroom door was almost always open.

Call the police—that was the smart thing to do. She should call the police, have them check, make sure no one was lying in wait, ready to attack a lone baker. But she’d feel really stupid if it turned out she’d just had an absentminded moment. It had taken long enough for people to take her seriously, to accept her as a competent businesswoman. Perky, ever cheerful Madison Gallagher, the girl next door, captain of her high school cheer squad. Do-gooder.

Okay, there were way too many hiding places. The idea of searching behind the counters, then the dining room, the bathrooms made her uneasy. She took out her cell and tapped in her password. She’d do the sensible thing and call the police station, have them send out whoever was on duty. They’d do a walkthrough, everything would be fine, and she’d give the officer hot coffee and a muffin for his or her trouble. And hope they didn’t spread the word that she’d freaked over nothing.

Dark spots on the floor snagged her attention. She frowned. Lulu had mopped yesterday, but there were dark spots on the floor. Wet, dark red spots.

A slight sound from behind had her sucking in a breath to scream even as a low, male voice rumbled in her ear, “Madison.”

She didn’t know how her heart could nearly jump out of her chest and keep beating. The shriek in her throat came out as a muffled yelp when a hand covered her mouth from behind. She struggled, jabbing back her elbow and connecting solidly against a hard body.

A pained grunt and the hand over her mouth loosened. “God almighty, blondie.”

“Logan?”

“Yeah.”

He loosened his hold and she turned around, trying to convince herself that her rapid heartbeat came from surprise, not because Logan Ross’s hands sent electricity zinging right through every part of her. Every part. “Why’d you sneak up on me? Are you trying to give me a heart attack? And what are you doing here?”

She stepped back, her gaze running over him. A dark knit cap covered his head, the blue-gray eyes that had once so intrigued her looked exhausted, and his beard was scruffy, and not in a good way. He held what looked like a bundle of rags and a flashlight in one hand.

“I need your help.”

On the Count of Three by Carolyn Arnold – Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a paperback copy of Remnants.

And they thought prison was hell…

When a woman’s disappearance ticks off all the same boxes as two unsolved murders, Miami homicide detective Kelly Marsh is convinced there’s about to be a third. If she’s right and the killer sticks to their previous MO, she only has three days before Jenna Kelter’s decapitated head will show up somewhere in the city. With no time to waste, Kelly reaches out to the one person she knows can help: her former mentor and family friend Jack Harper, who just happens to lead a team with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit.

BAU special agent and profiler Brandon Fisher easily sees the similarities between Detective Marsh’s missing person case and the two cold cases: all three victims served time for DUI vehicular homicide and disappeared three days after being released from prison. But is that enough to assume Kelter has been abducted by a serial killer? Brandon’s not so sure and fears his boss may have let his personal connection to Marsh cloud his judgment. Surely there isn’t any other explanation for why they jumped into an investigation less than twenty-four hours after Kelter was reported missing. Then again, maybe Brandon is letting his own differences with the detective affect his perspective. He’ll need to move past it, though—and quickly.

After all, this killer has evaded capture for the past six years, and they may be looking at a lot more victims than originally suspected. This serial killer is calling the shots and pulling them into a macabre game of cat and mouse. While the team has no choice but to play, if they don’t make the right moves, one of them may not make it out of Miami alive.

“We’ll start on the count of three,” he said in a singsong voice. The Night pulsed beneath his skin with a heartbeat of its own.

“No, no, please!” the woman screamed.

It pierced his ears, but he smiled, moving into position next to her. “One…” He reached out for the chain that suspended the blade. “T—” His phone rang. His body quaked, the tremors of the Night snaking through him.

He grabbed a roll of duct tape from a nearby utility shelf and slapped a piece across her mouth. He normally didn’t have to worry about their screams out there, but he wanted to answer this call. The ringtone told him it was his girlfriend, Roxanne. She fit into his life plan—at least for now—and he didn’t want to mess things up with her.

He kept his eyes on the woman as he answered his phone. “Hey, sweetie.”

He listened as his girlfriend prattled on about their plans for the following evening—dinner, then a movie. Nothing new there. She said maybe dancing afterward, but they’d never make it to a club. She’d be ready for bed by ten, and he’d tuck her in. She was as predictable as drying paint and about as exciting. But she played along with his sexual fantasies without contention, and she’d do anything to make him happy.

“You’ll pick me up? My place at six o’clock?” she asked.

“I can do that. I’m looking forward to spending some time with you.”

“Love you,” Roxanne told him.

“Love you, too.” He hung up, smiling, and let the expression carry for his victim to see. He set up his cell phone to record again and walked toward the woman. “Let’s pick up where we left off, shall we?”

She was screaming behind the tape and bucking her head wildly. She was clearly trying to slide back, as if she could worm her way out of the guillotine.

Yes, fight. It makes it so much more fun…

“One,” he roared above her. “Two…” He wound the chain around his fingers. With a flick of his wrist, he released it. “Three.”

Ciao, Bella by Nanette Littlestone

I’ve loved languages since I was a little girl, but Italian was always one of my favorites. From the first ciao and arrivederci I was hooked. Listening to Italian is like rowing in a gondola across the gentle waves. There is a charm and fluidity to the sounds. They cascade from the tongue and lips with the smooth richness of melted chocolate. How can you not love Italian? And with a story set in Rome and Tuscany I had to incorporate Italian into the story.

The more I wrote, the more I used Italian. Italian proverbs, pastries, city names, chocolate brands. Everything came up Italian. I was riding the wave of beautiful language and I never wanted it to stop. By the time I finished the book I had over ninety phrases to translate.

Do you remember the Babel Fish in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? Science fiction has become fact and we now have Google Translate. And it’s pretty good. But I’ve been at this writing business for a while, so I didn’t leave everything to chance. I hired a translator to review my Italian and she found numerous errors. English is a funny language, full of idioms and casual references that don’t translate exactly. And there are many ways to say the same thing. For example, goodbye can be arriverderci. Or buongiorno/buonasera which means good day/goodnight. Or addio if you’re never going to see the person again. Or the informal ciao. And there are many more just for goodbye.

At my book signing (after the book was already published), some friends suggested that I record the audiobook. After a lengthy discussion, I thought, “Sure, why not?” I love to read, people enjoy listening to my voice, how hard could it be? There was just one little problem. I don’t speak Italian. As serendipity would have it, I was speaking with a potential editing client who was taking Italian lessons and I asked for the name of his teacher. And so commenced my lessons with Hadinnet Yohannes, a native Italian whose parents came from Eritrea. She’s delightful, patient, kind, and meticulous. Not only does she know Italian, she understands grammar and gender and all the little things you need to understand to write well. Needless to say, she found more errors. I left out the “u” in buonissimi. (sigh) People don’t really say Che piacere (I’m pleased to meet you). They just say Piacere. When I wrote La cena é pronto (dinner is ready) I didn’t realize pronto should be pronta because cena is feminine. Words were missing accents. I hadn’t made the ending on plural nouns plural. And it’s not Te amo which is Spanish for I love you. It’s Ti amo. (big sigh)

Thank goodness for dedicated teachers. I’m so grateful for all the help I received. And I’ve picked up a few words and sayings. One of my favorite proverbs that Toscana uses several times is A tavola non s’invecchia. At the table with friends and family you do not get old. I love that! Such a beautiful sentiment and one I hold close to the heart, especially as I get older.

It was a lot of fun to practice Italian, even though I stumble over the “r” that you’re supposed to roll (my tongue does not want to do that), I keep pronouncing “d” like “th” (the way you do in Spanish), and if the word is longer than three syllables, like maledizione or benedizione, I have some trouble the first time out. And the second. And maybe the third. I know I’ll never speak like a native Italian—I can barely understand more than a few words—but in my imagination the words flow like clear rushing water with the sound of tinkling bells.

An explosive yearning that can’t be denied.
Disturbing visions from an ancient past.
A mysterious stranger that somehow feels familiar.

On the night of her fiftieth birthday, the comfortable ride of Toscana’s life takes an alarming plunge. Haunted by seductive visions, she tries to push aside the desire and focus on the husband who adores her. Then she falls for Flynn, a younger man with an eye for adventure and a heart full of romance, who leaves her doubting everything she’s believed about love and passion.

In Atlanta, Rome, and the lush scenery of Tuscany, Toscana searches for answers to the mysteries of her life while she faces her biggest question. If she listens to her feelings will she lose everything she holds dear, or does her heart hold the key to love and joy?

I loved him before I knew him.

Some people talk of synchronicity. The rhythm of life. I know of rhythm, in the lyricism of words, in music, in the ebb and flow of the ocean, in the monthly cycles of plants and trees. A beautiful orchestration exists in the simplest of nature. But my world operates on logic, practicality, reason. I do not believe in a grand plan. I do not believe in God.

And then he came.

Before him, I had a well-ordered life. Habit and routine carried me through the day, warmth and comfort eased me through the night. There were disappointments. Longings. Not all was perfect. But such is life. If there was no great passion, so be it. Peace is preferable to something wild that soars then fizzles and leaves you with an aching heart. I had a different kind of love—security, respect, admiration, friendship.

He showed me my lies in a slow creep of warmth that grew and teased and eventually began to burn. The thought of him burrowed deep inside me until I could think of nothing but him.

To this day I don’t think he knew what would happen. How do you know what fate has in store for you? They say man has free will to act, to choose, to create whatever he desires. But what of other people’s actions, choices, desires? What if those choices conflict with your own? We tried to resist the seemingly magnetic pull. We did our best to act rationally, to behave with honor and dignity. To be selfless. But love is not selfless.

Love is selfish. Love craves attention. Love needs to be heard, to be felt. Love is a natural disaster.

You may think this is nothing new. We all know stories of love. But this story is different. This story spans over two thousand years. This story began in ancient Rome.

So I beg you, for as long as it takes to read this story, to put aside your beliefs. Something took hold of me, pulled me along. Was it fate? Destiny? Divine intervention?

Look to your own heart for the answers.

About the Author: Nanette Littlestone never knew she wanted to be a writer until she was over forty. But once she began, the ideas didn’t stop. Her fascination with relationships, history, and the spiritual path has opened her writing to women’s fiction, historical fiction, and inspirational nonfiction.

A native Californian, Nanette lives in Atlanta, Georgia, far from the beach (which she loves) but a place that’s warm with spectacular scenery. On the professional side, she helps entrepreneurial women write and get published with Words of Passion. On the fun side, she takes walks with her husband, cooks, plays with graphic design, and makes origami butterflies. She loves to travel, but she’s waiting for the teleportation machine to whisk her off to Greece or Asia. In the meantime, she’s happy with dark chocolate and romantic movies that make her cry.

Will they uncover the PIA’s murderous secret before every supernatural in its path is destroyed?

From When Darkness Falls

I am dying, I thought, in wonder. After all these years . . . this is what it feels like. Pompeii is dying, and she is bringing me with her.

It took all the strength I had just to keep breathing, to draw myself up to the podium, clawing at its sides. Even then, I was too weak to stand. I didn’t know if my feeble grip would hold the chalice. Still, I reached for it with outstretched fingers. One of them hit the cup, and the chalice shook violently. My eyes bulged.

No!

I saw the chalice go over the other side of the podium. I squeezed my eyes shut, and with the last burst of magic I could muster, pulled it back within my grasp. I barely managed to wrap my fingers around the stem. I didn’t so much lift the chalice to my lips as I let the liquid spill over them. I fell backward and onto the floor, the now-empty chalice clattering next to me.

I remember thinking it would taste like wine.

I’m sure you all know how vampirism works by now. A vampire drains your blood and replaces it with their own. Then, you’re essentially immortal—ageless, and frozen in time. Of course, it would have been helpful to have this information before I drank from the chalice.

Chuck grabbed my arm, bringing me to a stop. “I think it’s a great idea.”

“What’s a great idea?” I asked dryly.

“Find Sadie Kent. Ask her out.”

I cocked my head to the side. “And what am I supposed to say? Hi. You don’t know me, but I know all about you. I think you’re awesome and hot, and I’ve been obsessed with you for years. Oh, I’m also your new boss. Want to go out sometime?”

“Exactly!”

“Don’t be dumb.” I jerked out of his grip and pulled the restaurant door open. He walked in ahead of me. “I can’t even say some of that. She’ll think I’m a stalker.”

“You are a stalker,” Chuck stated, rather loudly. The hostess gave us a funny look.

“How many?” she asked.

“Just the two of us,” I replied.

“Would you like a table or a booth?” She smiled sweetly. “We have a nice, cozy spot in the corner. Very private.”

Her implication didn’t register until Chuck jumped away from me. “Gah!”

I laughed and asked, “Can we sit at the bar?” Then I winked for good measure, and she blushed, realizing her mistake.

“Sure. Follow me, please.”

Once seated, Chuck started in again. “I think you should call her.”

“Where am I going to get her number?”

“Ask Madi.”

“No way!”

He picked up a menu and opened it. “As the boss, don’t you have access to Human Resources files?”

“That’s creepy.”

He shrugged. “Hey, you’re the stalker.”
