Over 9,000 years ago, an ancient spiritual energy leaks through a link in time entering Thenitiwan, destroying the barrier between the past and future. The spirit enters a host or Hawopas to block the portals spiritual gravity through carnal energy of a living body to survive.

Over the centuries, a powerful civilization called Sagerowa emerges knowing that history favors the rise and death of great nations throughout time. Sagerowa eventually gained control of the gateway and entered future eras and destroyed them to weaken them and sought to freeze their era in time forever.

Many years later in the midst of the tension of the nation’s most recent war, Joie tries to return home with the assistance of Xuca who escorted her to safety. Xuca however is unable to look after her and be loyal to his goals and let her go as a priority. She soon finds comfort and resolve in a stranger named Keogx from the pain of missing the soldier she felt had her back and unknowingly more parts of her heart.

Enjoy an Excerpt from Book One:

Joie walks off the bus and stands on the sidewalk and watches as the bus takes off. It was a nice ride but she knew it was time to stop somewhere—even if in a remote, unfamiliar area. Then she turns away from the road and stared at the open terrain. She didn’t know where she was headed but knew she did not want to return. “I have no friends to leave behind,” she also thought to herself. Now that she was all alone, the tears came down her face that were quickly wiped away into the wind. She looks up at the bright blue sky. She wanted to be free and leave everything behind her. “Who have I become?” she asked. She guess it does not matter. At least she knew how she felt.

She drops her backpack as she walked to release the weight on her back and the bondage of the school. She walked slowly almost aimlessly but with peace of mind and a sense of tranquility. She did not know where she was going but felt silence in her troubled mind for the first time in a while. “When was the last time…,” she thought and smiled slightly feeling relieved from her trouble back in her hometown. Though it would be long before another summer with the season turning into fall, she knew it would come.

She looked down at her hand and takes off her watch and drops it while walking. Joie thought she didn’t need a watch to tell time and it did not matter anymore.

Her troubles from time to time were appearing in her mind between each thought of the beautiful surroundings. After several minutes, her negative thoughts were forced out by the positive feeling in her mind. She was cold and frozen but knew ice can melt. It was her hope. The sun glared harder in her face and eyes as the morning light turned more into the afternoon. She would rather spend her morning staring at the sun, than face her troubles that are now far away.

Joie stood still and closed her eyes feeling the breeze and reached her hands outward to the bright leaves ascending in the wind. She exhales and opens her eyes and saw a shabby store shop that stood behind trees in the woods.

If I’d Never Heard of Me Would I Read My Book? by Kate Hill – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Kate Hill will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

If I’d never heard of me would I read my book?

This is a great question! I don’t think I’ve ever been asked this, but to me it’s the most important question for a writer. There are so many different people in the world. You will never please everyone. What one person hates, another will love. I might be wrong, but I think if you’re writing for profit (not a bad thing!), you want to try to please as many people as possible. I’m interested in profit, don’t get me wrong, but I have a day job. There was a time when I wrote full-time, turning out as many books as possible and following particular guidelines. Even then I basically wrote what I loved, but I made certain compromises that I wasn’t always happy with. On the other hand, I also learned a lot, not only about the craft of writing, but about what I really want in my writing life. While I still follow guidelines when working with publishers, I also do some indie publishing now. No matter how I intend to publish a book, whether it’s following the guidelines of a publisher or self-publishing, I always write a book I’d want to read.

When I write, it’s because it’s a story I’m looking for and haven’t found anywhere else. To me, life is too short to write entire stories that are solely for profit–a profit that isn’t even guaranteed. I write what interests me and somewhere out there are readers who also connect with that. I’m a huge fan of indie books, movies, and comic books. Many of my favorites aren’t well-known with a high budget.

If I can’t connect with my story on some level, I don’t feel it’s right to ask others to connect with it. Everyone is different, but I feel that if I write what I love, then my stories are sincere, and others who enjoy similar characters or themes will hopefully find pleasure in my work as well.

A blazing trail only he can see leads demon hunting biker Starr Johanson to his destined mate. A blessing placed on her family’s ancestral land summons Mysti Wild to the cabin where she’ll meet the man fated to share her life.

Each fears the other will be frightened by magic they don’t understand, but they quickly learn to trust each other, because no one can resist the person they were born to love.

Starr slipped and tumbled down a rocky, leaf-strewn decline. For several seconds he could only grunt and try to roll with the fall. He landed on his stomach, the wind momentarily knocked out of him. He tasted blood and spat a mouthful while pushing himself to his hands and knees. From what he could tell, he had cuts and bruises, but no breaks.

Blinded by rain and wind, he glanced around, dazed. He started climbing up the slippery incline, but fell again. Maybe it was an optical illusion, but he thought a path led off to his left. Starr tried to calm his mind and listen for guidance. Instinct told him to try the path, illusion or not, and he had long ago learned to listen to his instincts.

He took a step and his ankle nearly buckled.

Great.

He pushed forward as quickly and carefully as he could with a sprained ankle.

Something too warm for rain trickled down the back of his neck. He swiped it and looked at his bloodstained hand. Rain pelted it, diluting the blood. Dragging his hand along his denim-clad thigh, he limped on.

Squinting through the storm, he noticed a clearing in the distance, surrounding a lake or bay.

“Hey!”

That wasn’t a spirit voice, but human.

“Hey, you! Dude!”

Starr turned and saw a woman approaching. She wore a yellow fisherman-style raincoat and hat that left half her face in shadow.

She approached and Starr hobbled toward her.

“Hi,” he said. When she tilted her amber gaze to his, Starr’s heart skipped a beat.

He smiled faintly.

So she’s why I’m here.

What would you do for a second chance at a perfect love?

Anne’s privileged family forced her to break off her romance with Freddie Wentworth, an Air Force pilot; they didn’t approve. Almost eight years later, Freddie is back in her life. Can they rekindle an old flame? Or is there too much hurt and misunderstanding in the way?

New York was full of public green spaces: Prospect Park close to the Musgrove house, Green-Wood Cemetery near the dry cleaners, and of course Central Park in Manhattan.

She had gone to see an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and then went for a long walk on the endlessly winding trails, when she happened upon Henry and Louis walking with Freddie.

“Anne!” Henry exclaimed. “What on earth are you doing, walking alone in Central Park?”

Anne gave them a nonchalant shrug. “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m walking alone in Central Park.”

Louis took her arm. “You idiot! Well, you’re going to have to stick with us.” He gestured at Freddie. “Have you met Anne? She’s our brother’s wife’s sister.”

“We met at your brother’s house, and we already ascertained that we went to Cornell at the same time,” Freddie nodded civilly to Anne.

“Hello,” Anne answered her nod with a weak smile.

“We’re asking for details about Freddie’s glamorous career as a pilot. She’s frustratingly close-mouthed about everything,” Henry complained.

“Well, you know military personnel can’t say much about what they’re doing. Why are you asking?” Anne chastised the both of them. Her eyes met Freddie’s for a moment, and Anne’s voice dried up and withered away to nothing. She remembered when she was the one asking Freddie the questions, and Freddie would answer her with a laugh, “Well, I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.”

“Well, what I can tell you is that the recruiters really aren’t lying when they say ‘It’s not just a job, it’s an adventure,’ ” Freddie offered.

The Ideal Writing Conditions

There’s something odd about my human nature that I have never been able to quite understand. The longing for the nostalgic, and a strange fascination for the simple. Sometimes, a genuine love for the mundane.

This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to wake up to the pitter-patter of rain on the pane, to the tip-tapping of Husky claws down the hallway, to the chirup-chirping of our neighbor cardinal stressing to stay dry. The tree in the backyard was swaying delicately along our roof, the vent on top of our house was chiming with each revolution of its fans.

Soon, honey-almond espresso would be brewing, toasted apple-raisin bread would be topped with fig cocoa preserves, and I would be sitting in my Legend of Zelda robe, eating my modest breakfast, and watching the world pour its heart out in absolute silence.

A dash of red and green from the plant on the coffee table. The idle stretches of furry paws on the living room rug. The knowledge that the love of my life is resting peacefully upstairs. These are the ideal writing conditions, of which stem faithfully and purely from muse—the heart and soul of inspiration—and oftentimes, it can be so hard to find something this passionate; something this ideal.

Humans (or maybe it’s just me) seem to tie themselves to a handful of moments along the timeline of their lives that illustrate a more perfect reality than what originally was, and what currently is. This past Sunday was one of them for me, and when I experience these moments, I recognize that they have no real importance. There is nothing visibly great about them. But they serve a purpose. They bring a small, faraway smile to my face; they help me create.

“In the Vampire Stratocracy of Cain, human blood is scarce. For centuries, councils have sought to assuage the blood shortage by enslaving and breeding humans, turning them into profitable supply units for the rich and the abled.

Today, eighteen-year-old Wavorly Sterling is officially a supply unit, bound to serve her blood willingly to her master for the rest of her life. One of only few humans that was not bred in Cain, Wavorly knows freedom better than anyone, and she is determined to escape the clutches of her oppressors—despite the allure of forbidden love.”

The weight of their presence grows heavier, bringing with it the animosity of a plague; a terror that I take all the way down to the marrow of my bones; a seeping cold that is bristled with thousands of tiny needle-head points, sending fire along my spent arms and shoulders. It blasts its way down into my soul, threatening to obliterate every ounce of resolve that has landed me here, along these steadfast bricks, amidst my escape from the Stratocracy of Cain—amidst my escape from the vampires.

“You have beautiful eyes.” Oh, good God. The words were out before he could stop them. Immediately, he backpedaled. “I’m not coming on to you, I swear, it’s just this is the first time I’ve actually seen someone with violet eyes. I-I mean… in person.” Heat rose in his cheeks. Blushing! Holy crap. He didn’t blush anymore—hadn’t in years.

She punched in his purchases. “Come on, rock star. All those Hollywood starlets and groupies and not a single one had eyes the same color as mine?” Her voice dripped sarcasm as she held out her hand for his credit card. “It’s thirteen sixty with tax.”

He fumbled in his wallet for his Amex Black card. “Why do you keep calling me that? I’m an actor, not a rock star.”

“I’m using it generically.” She passed the card back to him with another eye roll. “We don’t take Amex. What else have you got?”

Biting his lip to keep from expelling a frustrated breath, he handed over his VISA, the one where two percent of the money he spent went to save the redwoods. If it impressed her at all, she hid it well as she tapped the card on the screen, thrust it back at him, and turned the screen around so he could sign it with his finger. He hated doing that. His signature always ended up looking like his six-year-old niece, Ali, had written it. “Thanks so much for opening up for me.”

“Don’t expect me to do it again.” She walked swiftly around the counter to the door, twisted the key in the lock, opened it, then stood glaring at him, one hand on her slim hip.

In that moment, Aidan could have sworn they’d met before. “You look really familiar. Do I know you?”

Writing Tips and Advice by Evi Rhodes – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Evi Rhodes will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Writing Tips and Advice
A few tips/advice that I can impart as I’ve traveled through this process are as follows:

First and foremost have fun. Writing and publishing your work although can have its challenges, it’s supposed to be exciting. Try not to get bogged down and stressed out, when you start to feel overwhelmed take a break and clear your head. I always found taking a walk or meeting a friend for a coffee really helps me refocus. Love your work, love the process and love yourself for being brave enough to put a part of you out there.

Secondly no matter what you’re writing about make sure you’ve thoroughly researched the topic. For example if you are writing about a particular city then take the time to look up everything from time zone, local sites, foods that speak of the area, how long it would take for you to get anywhere, names of streets etc… I’ve read many books that have fallen victim to describing a real place or event and have the facts incorrect, this automatically ruins the readers experience if they are familiar with what you are writing about and worse yet it will deplete their confidence in anything else that is written in the story. I will spend hours researching anything I want to add to my work; something as basic as a car to something like what stars can be seen in that month at night in that particular location. It all makes a difference to your reader so make sure you’re correct.

Third tip I’d like to impart is promote your own personal flare when you write. We all have our own specific way of writing and nothing pulls me out of a story quicker than someone who changes their style multiple times in a novel to the point you wonder if separate individuals wrote the work and it was stuck together to make one story. When this happens the characters feel unbelievable and fake.

Fourth tip, is to stay consistent. As a reader it drives me crazy when I am really into someone’s story and they take the time to clearly describe a character and then change their description part way through the book. He went from having brown eyes to blue, short spiked hair to long waves or we are in a four bedroom house and now it only has three bedrooms. If you’ve decided to make a major change in any of your story descriptions then make sure to go back to the beginning and make the changes right from the start.

Also, I would highly recommend to have multiple people that you trust read over your book during the editing process. Something that I have personally found with my own work is that I don’t see spelling or grammar mistakes. I can read over a sentence fifty times and still not see that I’ve used the wrong, ‘there, their, they’re’, or that a word is completely missing from the sentence. If I could go back in time I would have three to four different sets of eyes read over my work before I published; more eyes means more people that will all catch different mistakes and help make suggestions.

Lastly, I would say you want to be open. This may seem broad to say and in a way it is, but really you want your work to come from your heart to do that you need to be open and allow the story to really flow out of you. You also want to be open to constructive criticism as well as reviews whether they are positive or negative. It is a very difficult task to not take what others say as a personal attack especially after you’ve poured so much of yourself into your work, you may find that you agree with some of what is said if you take out the emotional hurt from the harsh words. By looking at the comments with objectivity allows you to see what others see and grow as a writer; but with that said don’t fall into the trap of changing your work every time you receive a negative review. Remember that above all else, we cannot please everyone and that is okay.

Follow the journey of a strong, independent, yet caring woman as she navigates the supernatural world she is thrust into. Gwen steps out of a dysfunctional family life and into a world filled with danger she never realized lives at every turn, fiery passion, and a love that is ever binding. How will she handle her strange new surroundings as well as the man with the intense and overbearing personality who threatens to destroy the emotional barriers around her heart?

Wicked, the next in line to become the vampire king, is caught off guard when he grudgingly agrees to take on a charge, something he never wanted to do. He is unsure how to handle the fierce and vibrant woman with the unsettling green eyes. It doesn’t take long for them to clash, but will it end passionately or burn down around them?

Enjoy an Excerpt

Wicked stood in the darkness staring at his soon-to-be charge and felt like a deer in the headlights. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her and just stared, blinking with wide eyes.

“I didn’t expect you to be so beautiful,” he whispered to himself. He was late meeting her but he could not face her yet, not until the blood in his veins cooled and his breathing returned to normal. The last thing he needed to do was make an ass of himself by acting like a high-school boy hyped up on hormones. He had never in all his 148 years felt this kind of draw toward anyone. He had the strongest urge to reach out and touch her hair, to whisk her off her feet into his arms and kiss her until their lips hurt and she breathlessly begged him to stop. His blood felt as if it were boiling in his veins as the image of this woman in his arms flickered across his mind.

Out of the blue, she laughed aloud, seemingly for no apparent reason, but it was almost his undoing. It was like she was purring in his ear; he could feel her breath against his skin as if she were standing right beside him. He growled under his breath and then turned around and closed his eyes as he ground his teeth together in response to his body’s reaction. Good God, he wanted to march across the short expanse separating them and do something that he would definitely regret later, like push her up against the wall and take her right there. He could picture ripping open her jacket and lifting her off the ground . . .

To Outline or Not to Outline – That is the Question

Just like each individual is unique, so is that individual’s writing style. Some people plot and outline every detail of their work while others prefer to wing it. It can sometimes feel like a tug-of-war between the two: am I plotting/outlining enough or too much? Which one of these methods is correct?

The answer is both. Whatever works for you is the correct one.

I have tried my hand at both styles and found a happy medium between the two extremes that works for me. I originally started making it up as I went along; I remember an occasion or two when I started a story and even I didn’t know who the killer was going to be in the story (a murder mystery with heavy emphasis on the mystery!). I also tried to completely outline my story from start to finish, dot-jotting all of the major events or details that were supposed to happen in a particular chapter for each and every chapter. Here’s what I’ve learned from my venture into the world of outlining and the world of flying by the seat of my pants and also the method that works best for me.

TO OUTLINE: Outlining can be very helpful for obvious reasons; with a blank page in front of you, figuring out what is supposed to happen when or what character is supposed to do something at a certain point in the story may seem like a daunting task. That’s where the outline comes in. Okay, chapter 1, I want to introduce this character and have him/her do this. I also want to introduce the conflict with this other character by some event happening. All right, now chapter 2… and so on and so forth. For some, having a definitive path to follow to get from page 1 to the final page is a must. With a clear cut start, middle and ending, the outline can help to reduce writer’s block. You already know what’s going to happen next. Granted, even though the next chapter’s details are already laid out for you, writer’s block still may occur when trying to get from point A to point B; don’t get discouraged! Then again, the writer’s block may be a good thing because it might be an indicator that there is a plot hole that needs to be fixed. Instead of trudging your way through hundreds of pages only to find a bottomless pit of a plot hole that could put the entire story in jeopardy, having an outline can highlight issues that might occur later in the story that will need to be remedied. Wait, this character can’t do that; it’s not in his nature! I have to go back and fix this. Or perhaps something like: why didn’t the antagonist just do this? It would have made this happen instead of that happening. I need an explanation for that reasoning/action.

NOT TO OUTLINE: Part of the fun of writing is the creativity that comes as a result of imagining characters, places and scenarios. A rigid outline could interfere with the natural flow of creativity. Oh, hey, that character would make a great addition to this scene! I’ll pencil him in to this chapter and see what happens instead of shoot, this character can’t be in this scene, even though I know he/she’d have some great dialogue to add and/or would really help him/her in some way. Sometimes a character or a plot may need to change over the course of a story in a way that wasn’t even initially conceived of. My story Into the Fire was an instance of a character being brought into the story that wasn’t anything I had thought of doing when I started writing it. The piece itself was a side project I was doing, just having fun with different POVs and writing suspense, sort of like the movie Vantage Point (2008, with Dennis Quaid and Forest Whitaker); the different points of view all came together to tell a single story and the truth behind what happened. I got about five chapters in when an idea hit me: what if I made the cops called in to deal with the threat be Sam and Dahlia? I like the idea of putting Sam in more stories since he was a fun character to write and explore. Once that idea occurred to me, the pieces began to fall into place. The security guard became Sam’s mentor, Edwin. Sadly, though, Edwin’s fate in that story remained unchanged, even before Edwin Hill the security guard became Edwin Hill, retired cop/mentor/foster father of Samuel Marlowe. Because I wasn’t sticking to a rigid outline, I had the freedom to adjust the story accordingly.

THE HAPPY MEDIUM: I found that what works best for me is a flexible outline. I have an idea, whether it be a prompt or a scenario, that I plan to start writing. From there, I dot jot a couple of ideas that I want to happen in the story. Here are the notes I have for one of the stories in the next installment of Good Cop Bad Cop. This story is called (tentatively) ‘Paying a Debt.’

Gloria is going to the bank
Sam recognizes something is wrong and goes with her
He is off duty, so he has no weapon on him
Robbers show up
Turns into a hostage situation
Sam contacts [character name removed to avoid spoilers] for help

With these few lines, I have an idea of where the story is headed. The next step would be to create the characters, or, at least, get some names. With a flexible outline, I can add or remove characters as I need, so I usually just start off with a bunch of first and last names that I can refer to to create characters. Once I have some characters in place, I start writing. It’s fun to let the story develop on its own, with me, as the writer, merely along for the ride. I learned the value of this when writing a separate story a few years ago and the way the chapter was chugging along, I came to a confrontation between two characters that I didn’t plan on having in the rigid outline I’d created, but I loved the scene because it really fit the characters’ personalities to nearly duke it out until interrupted by a third character both were connected to.

The story is like a child and the writer, a parent. We spend days, months, years, working on a story, developing it and making it the best it can be. That story, though, can take on its own personality and traits or quirks that may not have otherwise developed if the writer hampered its natural procession.

Outline or don’t outline-whatever you feel works best for you but remember to let your muse and the story guide you at times. You never know where a story can go unless you let it take you there!

What do you prefer, outlining or winging it?

When his mother is beaten to death by his alcoholic stepfather, fourteen-year-old Samuel Marlowe is rescued from seeking revenge against him by a chance meeting with Officer Edwin Hill. The veteran policeman takes Sam under his wing and even becomes the boy’s foster father.

Sam becomes a cop and works alongside his beloved mentor until Edwin is killed in a shooting. Hailed as a hero for his actions in the case, Sam feels like anything but. He begins a dark descent away from the stand-up policeman he once was, turning to drugs and alcohol to numb his pain and his PTSD.

The police captain assigns Sam a partner hoping to salvage what is left of him by forcing him to become a good role model for the young recruit. Needless to say, Sam is not pleased with the arrangement, protesting it up until the moment Junior Detective Dahlia Bennett enters his life.

Will he try to shake her loose? Does her by-the-book ideals and strong moral code rub off on him? Will his relaxed attitude and views on true justice start to influence her? What will ultimately lead to the two becoming a solid team? When Dahlia declares she wants to reopen some cases believing that the wrong person was sent to prison, Sam tells her straight out that in doing so, she would be putting her life at risk. As Dahlia persists, Sam is faced with the ultimate decision: let Dahlia reopen the cases and discover his crimes, or kill her to keep her from learning the truth.

Brian stepped forward, opening the massive doors with ease, and walked straight into the sea of microphones, camera flashes, and video recorders. Roderick followed a few steps behind his loyal attorney and stood at his side as he waited for the onslaught of the inevitable media coverage that was a result of the trial’s conclusion.

“People, please,” Brian started to speak, holding his hands up to halt the millions of questions that were being voiced to him all at once.

Once the media crowd quieted down, Brian addressed them:

“I am pleased to announce that my client, Mr. Roderick Morgan, was found not guilty for the deaths of his parents, Walter and Cassidy Morgan. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan adopted Roderick and raised him as if he was their own flesh and blood. There was no way that he would repay their love and kindness by brutally murdering them as they lay sleeping in their beds.”

Roderick nudged Brian, who turned to look at him.

“May I?” he asked.

“Of course,” Brian said.

Roderick stepped in front of Brian to better face the endless crowd of media before him.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who supported me throughout this dreadful ordeal,” he said, speaking in the sweet and innocent tone that had helped him to win over the jury a short time ago.

Roderick’s gentle eyes and sincere expression then suddenly transformed to that of smugness accompanied by a sneer. “But that proves that you are all stupid as hell,” he said with a wink. “Because I got away with murder. Adios!”

Roderick pulled his designer sunglasses out of his designer suit coat pocket and put them on as his personal driver pulled up in front of the courthouse with his golden Maserati. The media watched in stunned silence as Roderick descended the concrete steps to his car, not a care in the world. Brian followed solemnly behind him, his head lowered in shame at the admission of guilt by his client.

They say everyone remembers the day when…the colossal something happens. The world seems to stop, and in that moment, we are all one. On just such a day, near the outskirts of Boston, in the small town of Concord, next to Minuteman Park and the first battle of the American Revolution, I got caught by the security guard at the local mall.

“Owwwl-lynne,” the guard slowly pronounced. “That’s your name?”

I folded my arms in front of myself and puffed out my chest. “Eowlyn. Pronounced A-O-Lin.”

The guard couldn’t see me tremble inside. If I got in trouble one more time, I’d go back to the halfway house and I didn’t want to go there. Sleeping with one hand on a butter knife was not as glamourous as it sounded. I smiled prettily at him. “I didn’t take anything.”

The guard snorted. He opened a paper shopping bag and pulled out a blue ballgown. He smiled with yellow teeth and shook the cascading fabric in my face. “You didn’t take anything because I caught you. You had a dress stuffed down your pants.”

“Tell the others we’re going.”

She nodded, then winked. I grinned back as Ethan pulled me away. We hurried through the crowd, Ethan leading the way as he gripped my hand. His long legs were striding and I struggled to keep up.

“You in a hurry?” I asked.

He turned to me but didn’t smile. Instead, he kissed me, and my toes curled.

When he closed the door, he stood in front of me and pinned me to the car with his hips as he kissed me again. I could kiss this man forever. His strong, steady rhythm was demanding, and I willingly followed his lead. I put my hands in his hair, loving the soft feel of it between my fingers. Like on the dance floor, our kiss took on a life of its own.

When he buried his face in my neck and sucked right below my ear, I wondered if I would survive. “Ethan, honey, you’re killing me. I hope you have a lot of condoms.” He chuckled at my neck. “I’ll buy a box for next time.” It took me a moment before I realised he wasn’t moving anymore. “Ethan?” I whispered.

“Do you want a next time?” His voice was rough.

He shifted to look at me, and I didn’t know if it was a trick question. “Of course.” I smiled, although the protracted silence had my stomach starting to drop.

“Mia…”

Realization hit me like a slow-moving truck.

“I can only give you tonight.”

“Why?” I didn’t like the sound of my voice. It was small and fragile. He didn’t answer, but he looked haunted. He wasn’t going to answer me. “You only want tonight?” I still hoped I was reading this wrong.

When he nodded, I felt something break in me. Something I had pretended was strong and secure.

“I can’t do that,” I whispered. “Not with you.” My voice cracked under the weight of unshed tears. I couldn’t let it happen again. I wanted more.

“Mia…” He moved back, his hands still on my hips.

We were still close, but not.

“I don’t do well with one-night stands. There isn’t anything wrong with them, but I’m not built that way. Especially when I… care. I can’t turn my feelings off and I don’t think I should have to. I like you, Ethan, and I want to be with you like this and like we were today. I want more than sex, and I thought you wanted that, too.” By the end of my speech, any effort to hide my tears was futile.

“I can’t give you that.” He moved back, breaking our connection completely.

“You mean you won’t.”

“It isn’t like that.”

He reached for me, but I moved to the side.

“It’s exactly like that. I should’ve known better.” I righted my clothing and pushed off the car. I’d made it two steps before he grabbed my elbow and turned me around.

“Trust me. I don’t want to hurt you.” His expression was full of pain and grief.

“Too late.” I pulled out of his hold.

This time, he let me.
