When Remi Stone is promoted to director at Icor Tech by the INSANELY HOT, chiseled, PERFECT 10 CEO, the last thing she expected was for chaos to ensue. Boy—she should have been more prepared.

Who would have ever thought that being 23.7 hours early for a meeting would ever lead to a series of life-changing events that would see me influencing the course of a billion-dollar corporation—but I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s go back to the day AFTER my time-anxiety induced early bird mishap.

You see, I went into Icor Tech’s boardroom to present at the quarterly ‘Innovation Meeting,’ completely unprepared for all the enemies I was about to make. The board itself—and all the directors!

But that’s exactly what happened when the handsome, aloof, BILLIONAIRE CEO, Gabriel Icor himself, promoted me to director at 23 with NO FLIPPING WARNING!

Now, I have a bunch of seasoned board members thinking I’m an ‘upstart’ mouse. A bunch of employees angry their careers plateaued well before mine. And two insanely hot, crazy-successful, competitive, and ever charming businessmen courting me.

Oh, and get this—I’ve never so much as been on a date before.

What’s a girl to do? Well, I’ll tell you one thing that’s never advisable…

Accidentally blurting out you’re not wearing panties.

“How the hell is this thing even real?” Sayo says, staring at the massive cat named Kibbles with disgust.

“Just don’t move too quickly!” I hold up a hand to advise caution. “You wouldn’t believe how fast she is.”

“What the hell did that girl feed it?”

“Actually, I called the vet, and it’s not Remi’s fault. She inherited the cat from her grandmother last year. She’s actually down five pounds. Maybe that’s why she has such a temperament.”

Sayo takes a step toward the beast, but a guttural hiss stopped her in her tracks.

“Are you sure you want to take care of this thing?” she asks.

“She’ll eventually go to a vet, but for now, it’s my…last connection to…”

All at once, we are silent. Sayo, Kibbles, and I stand staring at each other, not sure how to proceed.

Remi has no idea that I’m standing here thinking about her right now. That she hasn’t left my head. That I can’t sleep, and I’m now clinging to her obese cat like a security blanket.

Last night, in the desperate throws of sleeplessness, I decided I would try to cuddle the terrifying creature named Kibbles. I lured her to my apartment with Pounce treats, then nearly threw my back out lifting her, bringing her to my room, and hoisting her onto my bed. I work out pretty regularly, so the weight itself wasn’t an issue. It was how she jerked her solid mass of flesh that did me in.

It was a fight I couldn’t win, but I tried nonetheless. Now, my arms are covered in scratches, and a traumatized cat now stalks my apartment.

A jock and a party girl teaming up—makes total sense, right? Actually, maybe…

Ambar Hernandez is a senior communications major who has no idea what she wants to do in life. She spends most of her time working on her blog after gaining a lot of readers with a story she wrote junior year and…never followed up on. The last thing she expects is an angry jock accusing her of involvement in a scam that could shake the college to its foundations.

Jeff Maddow should be focused on his senior season of baseball and not the suspicious activity happening on the team. It’s his time to shine and get drafted, but after seeing incriminating evidence, he can’t not investigate. And his first lead is the campus blogger…who’s related to a name in the document he saw.

Ambar’s been coasting, writing about campus fashion and hook-ups rather than politics and economics, but when Jeff shows up at her place spouting wild accusations, she agrees to help him just to prove the stubborn athlete wrong.

Long nights, impassioned arguments, close quarters…both Jeff and Ambar find opposites more than attract when things heat up.

Everything would be blown. The story, my cover, all of it, if he recognized me That was the entire point of dressing up—to be just another girl flirting in a bar.

Shit.

How do I escape this? Should I run out? Pretend I don’t see him? Throw my coffee in his face? A ploy…something to throw him off my scent. That’s it.

Without thinking a second longer, I marched past Max and up to Jeff. “Hey, baby. I missed you.”

He didn’t have time to react before I threw my free arm around his neck and dragged his face down to mine. His lips were cold and hard, not unlike his reluctance to trust me. In all the ways I’d secretly fantasized about kissing Jeff, none of them were like this, stiff and awkward in a coffee shop. It was three seconds of agonizing embarrassment before something shifted. Awareness fluttered in my lower abdomen when he placed his hands on my hips, drawing me closer to him. His lips weren’t hard anymore. His entire body softened against me and he kissed me.

Like, a holy-shit,-my-crush-likes-me type of kiss. He opened his mouth slightly and teased mine with his tongue, sending a bolt of attraction through me that had my thoughts getting fuzzy. He tasted like mint and smelled like fresh air—a combination lethal enough to make me forget why we were kissing.

But it didn’t matter in those seconds where our mouths were connected and his hands were on me. I felt that kiss all the way down to my cold toes and I curled them in my boots when he slid his tongue deeper into my mouth. It wasn’t until I groaned that he stopped. When he broke our connection, it was a rush of overwhelming realization that we were in public and the kiss wasn’t real.

He stared down at me with his gray eyes swirling with just as many confusing emotions as I had. “Wh…hey?”

My throat was clogged with words I wanted to say, but the force of that kiss made me speechless. Instead, I grabbed his gloved hand and dragged him out of the coffee shop and onto the sidewalk. “Max was in there and he recognized me from Tuesday. I panicked.”

“Your plan was to kiss the hell out of me instead?” he asked, an amused grin forming on his face. His lips were a little red and it brought me an insane amount of pride to know I was the reason why. “Tell me how that plan helped.”

Self-publishing v. Traditional Publishing by Alexa Randolph – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Alexa Randolph will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Self-publishing v. Traditional publishing

When I decided to write my first book I would research on the topics of the book as well as the type of publishing I wanted. During a lot of my research I found that a lot of authors didn’t like authors who self-publish. They thought it was taboo and if you want to do well then you to get an agent, editor and publishing deal.

I didn’t understand what was so bad about self-publishing. It seemed similar to me. I didn’t put much thought into it. I started getting a list of agents that I thought might like my manuscript and started sending them out electronically. After a few months of either not hearing back, being rejected and one that asked me to send more I decided to really look into self-publishing.

The more I researched it the more it seemed to be the perfect fit for me. Sure traditionally published authors turned their noses down on it, but everyone is different. As I continued to research I realized it is the same thing except I pay for everything up front like editing, a cover designer, and I am in charge of all of the marketing.

With traditional publishing you have a lot less control and a big chunk is taken out to pay for the services your agent and publisher get for you. You may end up with next to nothing unless you become a best-selling author with millions sold.

I am not dissing the traditional route, but for the type of person I am I like the idea of having more control over everything. Amazon makes it easy to self-publish and I get a high percent of each book sold.

I think they are both equally great with each having pros and cons. I think it should be up to each person what works best for them.

Ella noticed that Daniel was starting to get fidgety and had a nervous energy. She held his hand and smiled at him. He kissed her hand and held them tight. “Ella, you have always been my best friend and for the past six years, I have been lucky enough to call you the love of my life. We may fight at times, but I know that I could never be without you by my side. Words could never describe how much you mean to me. You are the reason I wake up in the morning and the reason I never want to go to sleep at night. When I think about my future, the only thing that I know for sure is how much I need you in it. You are my everything.” He grabbed a box out of his pocket and got down on one knee. He looked her right in the eyes and said, “Will you do the honor of making me the happiest guy in the world and be my wife?” Ella was shocked. She shouldn’t have been surprised, as this had been a long time coming. But still, she didn’t think it would happen now when her life had just fallen apart. Tears formed in Ella’s eyes. “I…uh…I need a minute.” Ella said before slipping her heels off and taking off down the beach.

How to Handle Negative Criticism by Edgar Swamp – Guest Blog and Giveaway

How to Handle Negative Criticism
Let’s face it, no matter what you do, no matter how well you think you’ve done it, there is always going to be someone who thinks you didn’t get it quite right on some level, during a particular phase of the writing. Inevitably you’ll receive backlash regarding the character description/development, the plotting, pacing, or the ending. You think you’ve done the best job you could, and somebody is of the opinion that you didn’t. Sigh…

Ultimately, the reader is the final judge when it comes to what you write when you share it. Those are the breaks. Not everyone is ever going to be totally happy with something you’ve done, but unfortunately it can really set you off. You think, “Do you know how hard I worked on this?” or “You didn’t like the ending? Then you’re an idiot!” These are knee-jerk reactions to a project you’ve nurtured since it was just an idea, then an outline, finally a book. Rejection is downright hard; there is no way of denying that. And taste is subjective; one person’s poison is another’s cure.

That said, negative criticism can also help you learn how to get better, to refine and further develop your story so that your intended audience is more engaged.

When you receive negative criticism, really look at what the critic is saying. Are your characters stereotypical and contrived? Is the plot dragging? The narrative unconvincing? Sometimes what readers who are willing to share a review are doing is helping you to develop ways of becoming a better writer, by letting you know how it genuinely affected them. If you are a novice writer, the site Writing.com is a great (and inexpensive) place to submit your writing to an audience of fellow writers who want the same thing: to write, read, and review.

I had my chops busted there for over two years before I started submitting stories to e-zines (the only real viable market for short stories by unpublished writers) and it took another year of learning what it was they really wanted before I had several stories published, often after numerous rewrites suggested by the editor. Constructive criticism can be a great learning tool to help you master your art, to drive you to do better every time.

OK, now let’s say you just wrote the best novel ever, the ultimate defining moment of your life. In your opinion, it’s so awesome that you’re finally gonna be able to tell your boss to take this job and shove it because you’re about to launch your world book tour…and someone who received a free copy on a reading site says in their review, “I set it down and didn’t know if I really felt like picking it back up, but eventually I did, I don’t know why. I got really bored near the end and I felt like if this was an analogy for sex, I just totally ‘faked the orgasm’. I don’t know if I’d exactly recommend this to anyone but the mentally challenged.” …you may be right in taking offense. I actually just sort of (very loosely) paraphrased something someone wrote as a review for my latest novel “Amber Hollow,” a book of mine that has been generating tons of wonderful praise.

Out of 20 or so reviews, it was the first negative one, and I was tempted to fire off a reply to the tune of, “I’m sure your partner feels the same way about you!” but I refrained because of what I already said: The reader is the definitive judge of your work when you share it; everyone has their own opinion, and everyone’s is different. If that is what one reader thought about my book, well, I have to live with that. Fortunately, that was only one person’s opinion.

If you write a book and the majority of your criticism takes that tone, you might want to go back to the basics and find out what you are doing wrong. Use it as a learning experience and you’ll feel better about it, except at three in the morning when you can’t sleep. The question of why they didn’t like your book may go over and over in your mind, so my advice is this: Take a valerian root and forget about it; it’s not worth losing sleep over. That critic probably actually LIKES a book by (fill in the name of the author you think is overrated) so that actually means they have terrible taste and wouldn’t know brilliance if it hit them in the face. Sweet dreams!

On July 15, 1991, an isolated village in Northern Wisconsin is ground zero for an unprecedented, fiery tragedy. Of the community’s 600 residents, there are only five survivors. Detailed accounts by the victims contradict each other; the only link is a man named Anthony Guntram, but because he is presumed to be dead, this claim can’t be verified. Further investigations reveal a culture enshrouded in mystery. What are the survivors hiding?

Only the villagers know the secret of Amber Hollow, a place where sanity is checked at the town line and the parameters of reality become blurred. An unconventional horror story by design, Edgar Swamp delivers an action-driven page-turner that will keep readers guessing until the calamitous ending.

The call came when they were five blocks from St. Mary’s, blaring from the radio in a raucous hiss of static that made both of them jump. Sadie looked at Jeremy, and the confusion in her eyes would be almost comical if the situation wasn’t so dire. He grabbed the handset on the radio, pressed the button.

“This is Detective Jeremy LeFevre. Please repeat the transmission.”

“There is a ten fifty-six A in progress on the Tower Drive Bridge, I repeat a ten fifty-six A.”

“We’re two miles from that location,” he said calmly, although his nerves suddenly felt as if they were live wires spitting enough electricity to power the entire city. “We’re en route.”

“Ten four,” the dispatcher said, and Sadie flipped a switch on the dash that fired up the siren. She then grabbed the bubble next to her, rolled down her window, and tossed it onto the top of the car where the magnet on the bottom held it firmly in place. For some reason, she always felt like she was in an episode of Starskey and Hutch when she did that.

“You thinking what I’m thinking?” Jeremy asked his partner.

“What are you thinking?”

“I don’t know, maybe I’m jumping to more conclusions, but somehow I think this is one call we need to take.”

Turned out, he was right.

Inspiration for a Series by Mary Morgan – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Inspiration for a Series

As a writer, I can be inspired by anything—from a song, an old photograph, or watching a weaver work on her loom. My new release was a yearning to return home to the Dragon Knights of Scotland and include a very special tapestry.

Yet before I give you a glimpse into the background for To Weave a Highland Tapestry, I must take you back almost two decades…

The Order of the Dragon Knights was created in the Highlands of Scotland on a cool summer evening of June 2000. Sitting alone on a large boulder, I was surrounded by the magic and mists of the land, including a few bleating sheep. The Dragon Knights were born that evening. The awakening and sense of a story overwhelmed me, and I can recall vividly these men and some of their tales. I wove my fascination with Celtic mythology, which began years before my first trip, into these epic stories of men who were part Scottish and Fae.

Now my love affair with Scotland began many decades ago. I blame it on my own bloodline—a yearning to return to the land of my ancestors. I have visited Scotland three times, so I’ve put into my stories what I’ve seen, felt, and experienced. I took a travel journal and wrote daily, which helps in my research, too. In addition, my husband took many wonderful pictures that captured the majestic scenery of Scotland.

In To Weave a Highland Tapestry, I felt it was time to give the hero, Patrick MacFhearguis his own “happy ever after.” He’s been a huge secondary character since my first book and series, Dragon Knight’s Sword, Order of the Dragon Knights. I sensed he was brooding at his home in Scotland. What he needed was a wife and a purpose. In truth, he has been a favorite of mine since he stepped into the first story. I made his castle, Leòmhann, as the center of this love story, along with an ancient yew tree.

Five stories later, a second spin-off series (Legends of the Fenian Warriors, four books), and three Highland holiday romances (A Tale of the Order of the Dragon Knights), I’m sure the Dragon Knights will have more stories to be told. The spark of inspiration took off with this first series and gave birth to other ones, too.

Patrick MacFhearguis, hardened by battles won and lost, desires what he can never have—peace within his heart and soul. Yet, the ever-meddling Fae weave a new journey for him to conquer—a task this highlander is determined to resist.

When skilled weaver, Gwen Hywel, is commissioned to create a tapestry for the MacFhearguis clan, she embraces the assignment. While seeking out ideas, she finds herself clutching the one thread that can alter the tapestry of her life and heart.

A man conflicted by past deeds. A woman with no family of her own. Is it possible for love to unravel an ancient past, in order to claim two badly scarred hearts? Or will the light of hope be doused forever?

His presence loomed from behind her. “If ye will permit me, I shall roll my knuckles along your back.”

Heat flared instantly up her neck, but Gwen nodded, giving him permission.

When the first contact of his fist swept across her back, Gwen let out a moan. Pain and pleasure fought for dominance. She closed her eyes against the sensation of his healing and seductive touch, allowing her body to ease from its rigid position.

“Let your limbs relax,” he urged.

“Feels so good,” she mumbled.

He splayed his fingers and massaged the knots along the column of her neck. Delicious pinpricks trickled down her back, along with the melting snow on her head. Gwen knew she presented a wretched sight, but she gave no care. His fingers caressed the top of her spine, and wove their way down to both shoulders. By the time he finished, her body was on fire with another type of ache, but her muscles had loosened up. There was no denying the man ignited a spark within her.

Gwen turned around slowly.

He placed his hand above her on the tree, trapping her against the rough bark with his body. Lowering his head near her ear, he whispered. “Better?”

The word had her breathing rapidly. Gwen did the unthinkable and pressed her cheek against him—his beard grazing her face. “Yes.”

“Good,” he breathed the word against her skin and withdrew.

He held her captive with the intensity of his gaze—compelling and magnetic.

“The car is stolen!”

Mother’s voice sliced through the swirls of sleep.

I leapt out of bed, glanced at the clock and tripped over the unfamiliar flannel sheet. On the wall was a poster of a rock band I’d loved at fifteen. I was back in the room of my childhood.

I’d brought Mother home to live with me for that first night after the Christmas card debacle. One night was about all either of us could tolerate. My apartment was too small. It had taken me only a few days to get my stuff together, notify my landlord and move in with Mother.

“Hang on, Mom.” I fought to catch my breath as I reached for my housecoat.

“Cassie!” Her voice cracked across the layer of frost that collected on the window frame overnight and slammed through the partially open window. I have a penchant for fresh air. Sleeping with a window open even in the midst of winter is normal for me, and made it easy to hear Mother’s shriek outside as it erupted a second time loud enough to roust the neighbors. Her screech had me excited but not panicked. Not until my conscious and my unconscious married those two thoughts together—outside and Mother.

What Would I Tell a New Author? by Austin S. Camacho – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Austin S. Camacho will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

What Would I Tell a New Author?

The first thing I would tell a beginner is to write every day. Writing is like any other skill: you improve with practice. Just like a talented athlete there is only one way to perfect your abilities and that is to work the necessary muscles on a regular basis. In this case, the muscles are in your brain case.

Be prepared for the fact that no matter how good you are, your first draft is going to be relative trash. But that’s the time when you’re telling yourself the story. whose story is this? What is the atmosphere and mood of your story at the outset? The atmosphere is part of the setting, instead of what your characters see or hear it is what they feel. The atmosphere could be light and pleasant, or dark and foreboding, or even suspenseful like that still moment just before a storm hits. But It should be a decision, not an accident.

Remember that writing is rewriting. After your first draft rests a while, return to it with purpose. Focus on the descriptions, all of which are written from the perspective of the point of view character. All of your prose needs to show what that point of view character sees, hears, feels, smells and tastes. And focus on the actual data. Every story is filled with relationships, character backstory, details about the setting, the history, the motivations. During the rewrite look at how you deliver that information. Everything needs to flow smoothly with no info dumps.

And finally, remember that everyone who reads your work will think they know what’s best for your writing, your characters, and your story. You should listen to all input, be it from editors, other writers or friends who just read a lot. But ultimately, make sure you listen most closely to your instincts. Only you know what’s best for your story. Be true to your muse and you will always end up with the best version of our story.

As Chico’s foot hit the first step he noticed Sophia for the first time. Just as his eyes met hers, Hannibal’s right foot thumped into Chico’s chest, slamming him back into the man whose jacket said he was Dave. Then Hannibal leaped from the porch, smashing his right fist across Billy’s jaw. A side stamp dislocated Jimmy’s right knee. Dave swung past Chico and clipped Hannibal’s cheek. Sophia gasped at the flesh-on-flesh sound of the blow.

Hannibal blocked the follow-up punch and snapped two crisp jabs into Dave’s face, staggering him into the tree growing up out of the sidewalk. Chico tried to slip past Hannibal, still driving for the door.

“Not tonight,” Hannibal said through clenched teeth. Sophia didn’t think Chico ever even saw the three punches, left-left-right that put him on his back, barely conscious.

With no standing attackers, Hannibal stepped back up onto the porch. “That was fun, but now I’m running out of patience with you boys.” Hannibal reached inside his suit coat, under his right arm, and pulled out a pistol. He pointed its muzzle down at Chico’s face.

“There is nothing lower than a man who beats his woman, although anybody helping him is mighty close. I’d beat your asses some more, just for fun, but I don’t feel like answering questions at a hospital. Now, all of y’all, drag your sorry asses out of here. And if I ever hear you came back here, or if you tell anybody where this shelter is, I will hunt you down and end you.”

“It’s not a bag of bones. It’s a block of old, historic buildings that need love and care,” she began. But standing there, taking in his polished rich-man strength, it was futile to convince him of anything. “You know what? Deal me the death blow now. I’d like to review the lease I signed before I throw in the towel and start looking for a new space and a new home, because I can tell there’s no way you and I will ever be on the same page.”

“New home?”

“What?” she said.

“You said, ‘a new space and a new home’?”

“I live in the apartment above the French Connection Bakery. Mr. and Mrs. Heely have owned it for twenty-five years.” There she was, exhausted-sharing again. And there he stood intense-staring. She closed her eyes at the craziest, weirdest conversation she’d ever had, and realized Chewie was asleep on her chest with his tiny head nuzzled in her neck. Oh, soft love, she thought, if only people were more like dogs, so trusting, kind, and loving.

“One month,” he said.

“One month to be out of—”

“I’ll give you one month to try to convince me.”

“I… What?”

“You spend time with me for the next month. We get to know each other, and you can state your case.”

“Spend time with you?” Is he insane?

“You said you wanted to try to convince me to change my mind.”

“Oh,” she whispered.

Gia pounded her pillow in frustration. She hadn’t slept in two days. But even exhausted, sleep eluded her.

The screams of the dead girls echoed in her ears.

When she closed her eyes, their beautiful gazes, frozen in the shock of death, stared back at her.

She had to stop this madness before he reached a dozen. He could disappear. Or start over again next year.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand and she snatched it, hoping again for a tip. Carly again.

The last thing she felt like doing was arguing with her sister tonight. She’d thought they had the holiday visit settled. It was just too hard for her to go back to that house. To the bedroom where she’d grown up. To the pictures on the mantle when they were together.

She rolled over and punched the pillow again. But the phone continued to ring. Battling anger and fatigue, she snatched it and connected the call. Before she could speak, a low wail echoed over the line.

“Help me, Gia…please help me!”

“Carly –”

Cold terror swept over Gia as the phone line died in her hand.

So Jason had plenty on his mind other than algebra when Pris the Unprissy marched in ten minutes late, threw herself into the chair next to Jason, blew an enormous pink Bazooka bubble and popped it all over her face.

Jason leaned over, whispering, “Can I help you lick that off, miss?”

Pris shot him a glare that was somehow also a smile and said at normal volume, “You can zip that thought and them parts as inspired it right back in your pants, devil man.” She was rewarded with some titters from neighboring seats and a glare from the Ed Tech at the front of the room. Leaning back in her chair and stretching her legs out in front of her, she carefully began peeling back the layer of pink from her face, stretching the threads, wrapping them around her finger, and biting them back into her mouth.

Jason shook his head, letting his hair fall around his face. Those parts weren’t actually much interested in Pris, but a girl could get insulted if you didn’t at least pretend to try.

He held up his hands. “Hey, you don’t know what you’re missing.”

Pris cracked her gum and answered in a much lower voice, “Yeah, right. Well-kept secret. If you never have to piss. Unfortunately, the blow by blow is on any girls’ bathroom wall in the school. What I’m wondering is how you ever find time for all the other trouble you get into?”

Jason flicked some imaginary dust off the tattered collar of his army jacket, then nodded in great earnestness. “Good time management skills are indeed crucial to high school achievement, Priscilla.”

Her eyes narrowed into slits at “Priscilla.”

“Watch that if you want to have anything left to manage those skills with, Mr. Devlin.”

“Ooh. It’s ‘Mr. Devlin,’ now.” Jason was surprised at how touchy she was about her name. She seemed so tough otherwise. He thought it was kind of endearing, but it meant he’d never let it go. He shivered and rubbed his hands on his arms. “So cold.”

“Like ice, baby. Your balls should shrink just thinking about it.”

The large and largely oblivious Ed Tech looked their way. “Anyone talking can look forward to the double session instead of just the one period. Principal’s orders.” She sounded as bored as the kids.

Jason turned to Pris in outrage. “Sssshhhhh! You’ll get us in trouble!!”

”Would you stop distracting me? I’m trying to work here.” She whipped out a physics book and started blowing another enormous bubble.

Jason and Pris sat straight up and focused exaggeratedly on their books. The whole room was stifling giggles. Jason got out a spiral notebook and started writing. Checking to see the Ed Tech had her head down, he passed the book to Pris.

“So what did you do?” it said.

The note came back. “Flipped off the gym teacher.”

“Ok. Points. What for?” Jason wrote back.

“To get detention.”

“Crafty. Why?”

“Jealous. You can’t get in all the trouble.”
