Five Inspirational Places

I’m away on holiday at the moment – the first one of 2020 because Covid-19 has cancelled the other two – so I thought I’d share five places which I find really inspirational. I should say that, although I love all five of these places, there are other places I love equally or more, but there are ones which really get the creative juices flowing for me! I’ve written them in order of north to south: three are in Scotland and two are in England.

St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney

This massive red sandstone building dominates the Kirkwall skyline as you drive into the town, and this is my earliest memory of it. In fact, I never set foot in the building when we were living in Orkney, but saw the interior for the first time when we returned on holiday in 2001. It is full of fascinating memento mori gravemarkers, which absolutely fascinate me, and the stained glass in absolutely magnificent. Perhaps the most memorable and unique thing about St Magnus Cathedral is the smell: warmth and love, which speaks of the years of Orkney which it has witnessed.

Lose yourself in the sights and scents, while you listen to the sounds of people from around the globe gathering together to admire the magnificent cathedral.

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe, Caithness

This building is just a short distance from where I live, and I’ve got many happy memories of it, like the time we met the founder of the North Carolina Opera Company there, or when we bumped into a group of people dressed as Knights Templar. It is the southernmost castle on Sinclair Bay and is believed to be haunted by the ghost of a man whose brother locked him up with salted meat and no water to drink. When his brother came to gloat over him, the incarcerated man attempted to strangle him with the chains he wore.

Coupled with this spooky heritage and the fact that the castle is built on the edge of a cliff, there’s no shortage of inspiration to be found at the castle.

Killiecrankie, Perthshire

This is where I am for this holiday. In autumn, there is not a more beautiful place in the world. The pass and the surrounding hills have burst into shades of golden, yellow, orange and red. There’s a good chance that you’ll see a red squirrel as you venture and the birdlife is fantastic too, along with evidence of pine martens, badgers and otters. In 1689, there was a battle in the pass, as the Jacobites won a battle which lost them the war, as “Bonnie Dundee” (their leader) was killed early in conflict and they had no one else with his skills as a tactician.

Like Sinclair Girnigoe, it is the mixture of natural and cultural heritage which gives this place the wealth of inspiration it has on offer. Take a camera, but make sure you spend time just soaking in the feeling as well!

Pendragon Castle, Cumbria

This place actually inspired the story that is my current work in progress: a story all about King Arthur’s foster-brother, Kaye. According to legend, it was the castle of King Uther, Arthur’s father, who attempted to divert the Eden so that it would provide the moat for his castle. His subsequent failure to do so was preserved in rhyme. In actual fact, its most famous resident was Sir Hugh de Morville, one of the knights who killed Thomas a Becket in 1170. On his return to Pendragon Castle, he found he was haunted by the fact that the ridge of the nearby hill resembled a recumbent man wearing a mitre!

The castle is usually surrounded by sheep more that tourists, which means you usually get the place to yourself. There isn’t that much to see anymore, but there’s nothing like a good ruin for getting the creative juices flowing.

Thornton Abbey, North Lincolnshire

I feel like I’m pinching this one, because it is such an important place for my sister’s book, Taking Wing. When the monasteries were dissolved, Henry VIII liked the architecture of Thornton Abbey so much that he decided to turn it into a college. Eventually though, it fell into disuse and disrepair, and now the gatehouse is the only part which hints at its former majesty. It too is haunted – by a man who was caught stealing fish from the monk’s pond and who got his head chopped off with a spade!

The way that the imposing gatehouse at Thornton Abbey looms over its surroundings leaves a magical shadow of inspiration around the area: how did the mighty become so fallen?

I’d love to hear about the places which you find inspirational – please tell me in the comments!

They left the inn as the church clock began to chime midday and completed their journey in relative silence. As they neared Arlen Manor, Kelli began to feel a strange sensation of being watched, as though a hundred pairs of eyes were following her wherever she went. Looking carefully, she saw there were sculpted birds in many of the trees: great, black, hideous creatures with round eyes which stared unseeingly and followed her as she passed them by.

“They are crows,” William explained. “Centuries ago, before it was Arlen, the castle which stood here was called Corbie. That’s just another word for crow. According to family legend, when a disaster is about to befall the men of the family, the crows of Corbie Castle can be heard talking to one another.”

Kelli felt a shiver stalk down her spine, and she was grateful when they left the woods and moved up the long driveway to the house, which was a picture of gothic splendour in the late afternoon light. She immediately had the feeling that this was the place she had been meant to find, although she could not explain where the idea came from. Climbing down from the trap, Kelli followed William to the door, and stood behind him as he hammered his fist against it.

Algorithm one: What if Peter exploded? He would come after Matthew. Matthew would wrestle him. They would both get in trouble. Algorithm one == fail.

Algorithm two: What if Peter calmed down? What if Matthew calmed down? We could all rescue the plane. I would be a big help barking at the tree to give up the plane.

By the time Archibald Cox arrived, they were firmly established as fixtures on the party circuit in the star port. They had a well known routine they followed; visiting various vendors during the day to prepare for that night’s round of parties. Massage, spa treatments, lunch; hair, nails, shopping for the next outfit always preceded that night’s round of feigned debauchery.

When Archie took Ilsa, it was done quickly and professionally. She and Nikki were in the middle of lunch. Ilsa went to the ladies room and never came back. Nikki finished her meal, waiting for Ilsa. Eventually, she went to the bathroom herself, looking for her. When she didn’t find her there, Nikki gradually grew more frantic, asking if anyone had seen Ilsa leaving the restaurant. As the negative responses piled up, Nikki became more and more agitated. Around her, the other regular patrons figured that one of Ilsa’s jilted suitors had finally stumbled across the right mix of pharmaceuticals and rendered her finally pliable to their advances.

They were correct, just not in the way they imagined.

After making the rounds and firmly establishing that Ilsa was actually missing and that she, Nikki, was completely distraught at her disappearance, she came back to the office with Otto (who had been dispatched to bring her back based on a call from what passed for the authorities at the star port). She came into the conference room where I had been monitoring them and flopped down into a chair.

“She’s in, my lord,” she reported.

People say writing in journals can be therapeutic. Well, at least that’s what my therapist says. I just think it’s an easy way for other people to find out all your secrets.

And seriously, who wants that?

But alas, my therapist, Dr. Janine Deerchuck—yep, that’s really her name—thinks it would be “beneficial” to me if I kept one, so here we are.

She’s suggested that I use this journal to write down all my hopes, and dreams, and fears, and blah, blah, blah . . . I figure if I’m going to do this, I’ll use it as a record of every awesome thing I’ve ever done. And when I’m finished filling up every last lined page in this black-and-white notebook, I’ll send it to my dad to let him know what I’ve been up to since he went away.

And that’s what brings us to Dr. Deerchuck and this journal in the first place:

Dear old Dad.

Don’t get me wrong, my dad is awesome. He’s one of the smartest, coolest, greatest dads on the planet. He’s practically raised me all on his own, and has taken me to places that other kids don’t even know exist—like Tanzania and Cat Island. He lets me stay up late, his favorite food
is pancakes, and he doesn’t even care if I occasionally sneak-watch Game of Thrones.

He should be in the Hall of Fame of dads, right? In reality? Not so much.

But he is famous. Just not for his mad dad skills.

Creating the Ideal Writing Space by Joanne Guidoccio – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Creating the Ideal Writing Space

When I first retired, I assumed I would be writing in my den. Everything was in place: desk, new computer, ergonomic chair, bookcases crammed with craft guides, and inspiring Monet prints on the wall.

Unfortunately, my writing muscles refused to budge.

After several frustrating attempts, I shared my tale of woe with Denise, a new writer friend.

“It’s the wrong room,” Denise said. “It sounds perfect on paper, but it’s not working for you.”

As I let her words sink in, I realized that she was right. A free room with computer access and no distractions sounds like a dream writing space for most wannabe writers. But something fundamental was missing.

The following day, I set the kitchen timer for 60 minutes and sat in front of the computer. I was determined to write something, anything at all. And if that failed, I would sit there until I figured out the problem. I managed to write the date and title before experiencing once again the tyranny of the blank page.

I turned several times in the swivel chair and tried to look out the window. I ended up dragging the chair several feet so I could get a good view of the outdoors.

Issue #1: I didn’t have easy access to a window.

Glancing around the room, I tried to figure out a solution. One of the bookcases would have to be moved so the desk and computer could be next to the window. I squinted and tried to reimagine the décor. It wouldn’t work.

Issue #2: The den was too small to accommodate any changes in décor.

I decided to take a coffee break.

While walking toward the kitchen, I passed by the living/dining area. I glanced around the large room, noting that two-thirds of the opposite wall was taken up by a large window and the balcony. Outside, five majestic trees provide shade and a beautiful view.

If only…

I walked quickly to the other end of the living area and stood in front of the entertainment nook. Without measuring, I knew right away that the desk, computer, and chair would fit. As for the CD player and stand…that could be easily moved.

It didn’t take long to set up in the nook. A friend helped me move the desk and set up the computer. On one of my shopping excursions, I discovered a set of four metallic butterflies for the wall.

With over 900 square feet of space and easy access to the kitchen and balcony, I no longer felt constrained. I could stretch, swivel, and write.

Bliss.

Angelica Delfino takes a special interest in the lives of her three nieces, whom she affectionately calls the daughters of her heart. Sensing that each woman is harboring a troubling, possibly even toxic secret, Angelica decides to share her secrets—secrets she had planned to take to the grave. Spellbound, the nieces listen as Angelica travels back six decades to reveal an incredulous tale of forbidden love, tragic loss, and reinvention. It is the classic immigrant story upended: an Italian widow’s transformative journey amid the most unlikely of circumstances.

Inspired by Angelica’s example, the younger women share their “First World” problems and, in the process, set themselves free.

But one heartbreaking secret remains untold…

As Angelica read the document, she heard several sighs emanating from Bellastrega. While she had grown to like this young woman and trust her judgment when it came to wellness, Angelica was not prepared to abandon her plans. Three women needed to be rescued.

“What if they don’t come?” Bellastrega asked.

“They will come,” Angelica said, smiling confidently.

“It’s still winter, and the roads around here can be treacherous.”

“That won’t stop them.” Angelica smiled at Bellastrega’s discomfort with winter driving. Fearless in her talk, the psychic dreaded going out at any hint of snow. “Not to worry. They’re Northern Ontario girls.”

Bellastrega waved her hands. “So, they get up here, and you share your secrets. Then what?”

“They begin to heal.”

“You can’t expect to solve all their problems in one weekend,” Bellastrega said in a gentler tone. “If you’re not careful, you’ll send them running to their mothers, who won’t hesitate to create unnecessary stress for you.”

From the start, Bellastrega had been determined to eradicate all the unnecessary stress in Angelica’s life. Did she really think she could create a lasting magic bubble?

Since receiving the positive medical report, Bellastrega had redoubled her efforts and started to plan spring and summer excursions. She had added to her meager wardrobe and purchased several decorative items for her room. Each day, she was settling in and becoming more comfortable in her role as a companion. The beautiful thirty-five-year-old woman with Arctic-blue eyes and a stormy past had found sanctuary in Angelica’s house.

Angelica’s thoughts traveled back six decades to her encounter with another set of Arctic-blue eyes. But that woman had been much older and more realistic in her expectations.

“Are you all right?” Bellastrega asked.

“I’m fine,” Angelica said, returning to the present. “I want to start the process. The rest will be up to them.” Angelica felt a sudden wave of fatigue, one she hadn’t experienced in months. This argument was growing old, and she no longer wished to justify her motives. Why couldn’t Bellastrega let it go?

Wizard had curled into a fetal position on top of a fuzzy throw close to the fireplace. The wind was buffeting the windows so hard the rain sounded like gravel being thrown against the glass. The logs were blazing and I thanked my stars I could snuggle inside tonight with Wizard and work.

Samantha had forwarded about fifty emails from the newspaper to my own AskZodia email address. As a weekly column, there was space for only three or four questions and answers, but now, the editor was considering running it as a daily feature. To keep the column interesting to as large a group of readers as possible, I like to pick a range of ages and problems.

My first pick was a letter from an older man forced into retirement.

Dear Zodia

I’ve worked as a bookkeeper in the corporate world my entire life. I’m 65 and my company forced me to retire. I’m in decent shape financially. I have a good pension and savings, but I don’t know what to do with myself. I’ve tried to find part-time work but no luck. I’ve never felt so lost and useless. Do you see any kind of work on the horizon for me? My birth date is May 4, 1944 at 10:43 PM in Baltimore.
~- Discarded

Poor guy. Worked his whole life and now shoved aside. The man’s birth chart showed Venus as the oriental planet, that is, the planet rising first before the Sun, a position that can sometimes offer a strong clue to the profession. This man was a natural artist, perhaps a craftsman, with his Mars in Virgo. He was someone with artistic yearnings and capable of patient, detailed work.

Dear Discarded:

Your true artistic abilities have never been recognized, much less nourished. A whole new world can open up for you if you would pursue some form of craftsmanship to produce beautiful things. Jewelry design, working in precious metals, is just one possibility that comes to mind. Please take some classes, perhaps at a local university extension and try your hand. I think you’ll be amazed at your abilities and imagination. Believe me, you won’t look back.

~ Zodia

I worked through several more questions and responses and then saved them all. This was hardly a perfect way to practice astrology, but hopefully, my quick judgments and answers would be spot on and help someone head in the right direction. I clicked back to the inbox and realized three more emails had arrived while I had been working.

I didn’t recognize the various senders. My AskZodia address had been set up only for Samantha, but these new emails weren’t from her. My private clients use Julia.Bonatti and my friends use JuliaB. None of them would even know of my AskZodia address. I hesitated. I’m a hopeless non-techie person and rely on my computer for business so I’m very fearful of viruses. I clicked on the button to open the reading pane and scrolled down. A jolt of fear shot through me. The message read, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.”

Tyler teams up with his former military unit, The Four Horseman, including his brother, crack-shot Corporal Jack Graven, the mysterious Lance Corporal Jin Xialong, and his one-time flame Colonel Diana Levitas. Once, they were an elite fighting team known for completing two of the most successful campaigns against terrorism ever launched. Now, they’ll find themselves locked in a war with The Church, the most influential organization on the planet–and pitted against the supernatural forces of the Underworld itself.

During their mission, Tyler and Jack learn of the legendary Black Muramasa, the only weapon that can destroy immortals such as demons, angels, vampires, seraphim, and nephilim. As they uncover the secrets of the ancient black blade–and their own heritage–they are faced with unforetold powers and infinite evils. If the Four Horsemen succeed, they may save themselves. If they fail, it’ll cost them their sanity, their lives, and even their souls…

Here comes an action-packed, gun-slinging fantasy adventure that packs the punch of a military thriller combined with high-stakes supernatural intrigue.

Jack was in a somber mood as he led the way into the hole-in-the-wall bar called Pandora’s Lounge. He seemed more frigid than usual, and he limped when he walked. His normal stoicism was replaced with something that seemed akin to sorrow. I, on the other hand, entered with fists clenched, a gnawing in my stomach, and the stone cold certainty that I was walking into a lion’s den. I gritted my teeth and followed.

There weren’t many patrons visible in the gloomy lighting of the barren drinking hole. One man sat at the center of the bar, the chairs surrounding him vacant. On the far side of the bar a couple of old men who appeared to have mined coal since they could carry the sooty substance cast unwelcoming stares from blackened faces. Their hands gripped their mugs in vice grips that dared the world to try and loosen their grasps. They mumbled inaudibly about what I assumed was what the weather would be like tomorrow, or perhaps it was concerning the aches in their bones. Perhaps it was one and the same.

I eyed Jack with caution, uncertain as to what he would do next. The shadow seated center stage never so much as turned in our direction. He gazed ahead, both sleeping and awake, his hands folded one over the other in front of a still-full pint. Unconsciously, my hands inched toward my waist.

“I didn’t expect to see you again,” The Priest grunted, without so much as turning his head. “Long way from home pups. Run along. Your nanny must be worried sick.”

Jack said nothing. I couldn’t see his face, but he stood motionless with his hands at his sides, his legs slightly cocked as if he were about to ask The Priest to draw. I felt cool sweat begin to swell on my brow, and it trickled languidly down my face in an unending moment of silence.

The Priest snorted.

“I’ve got no problem with you pups. If you’ve got something to say, say it. If not, get.”

Silence.

The old men at the far end of the bar scooped up their drinks, and quickly ducked out the back entrance.

“I don’t see Revolver. And you ain’t bold or fast enough boy.”

If you had to do your journey to getting published all over again, what would you do differently?

I have been dreaming about writing fiction for more than two decades. I have taken creative writing courses, edited Journals of Architecture, taught Architecture and creative writing; written short stories, attempted to write longer stories but after a few chapters realized that the story wasn’t really going anywhere interesting enough.

How the idea of APOPHIS came about, was ethereal and magical. At that prescient moment, I was certain that this was the book (or a series of books) that I was meant to write. For it was at the confluence of all my life’s pursuits and personal interests:

• Politics
• Philosophy
• History
• & Epic story telling

The book took me five years to finish (between multiple edits). But as much as I looked and asked around, I could not find anyone to guide me on the publishing process. So, I began a random, disjointed process of searching on my own. I found snippets of information and hints, online. In error, I sent out letters to well-known literary agents across the world, when I only had an incomplete manuscript, badly written synopsis and worse introductory letters. And of course, in response (the few that did respond), I received abrupt and sometimes rude refusals of representation.

I searched further and discovered that it is only after the manuscript (especially a fiction manuscript) is complete, finished and fully edited, should I even attempt to seek representation. A year later, after the book was complete, I again approached literary agents across the world and over many months sporadically received more than fifty rejection letters.
It was only then that I decided to go the Indie publishing way and after approaching several such publishers. I chose one that offered the best service and had an excellent reputation of being honest and professional.

In effect, I did everything wrong (for nearly two years) and went through a deep agony and confusion – which in itself was a learning, especially for a first-time writer.

I am sure the process of publishing Book 2 (in less than two years from now) will be from a place of learning the lessons learnt from the process of publishing Book 1.

Where do you get your best ideas?

I have received the best guidance about my life and my writings during deep, meditative and reflective moments. When a resolute confluence of patience, solitude and a restless optimism – arrives – as a gift from an ethical Universe.

What comes first, the plot or characters

At the end of the day – IT’S ALL ABOUT THE STORY!

At heart, in my very being – I am a storyteller, nothing else. When that epic idea arrives, which is an extremely rare moment and truly a gift from the Universe, it never arrives in parts – a body without a heart, or limbs or a head. It all comes together, a confluence of ideas, a plot and characters.

The test? The test is to remain resolute, patient and ethical. To continue to search for that – Epic Idea – while you work, wash dishes, play with your children, play with your dog and explore life and the world all around you.

What are you passionate about these days?

As the book is launched and published, I believe it is my most passionate responsibility to share the idea of APOPHIS, with as many readers as I can manage to do – across the world.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

• An absolute passion for reading and writing – in that order.
• An absolute passion for life and the will to overcome the travails that life will present – in that order.
• An absolute belief in the power of time and an ethical universe – in that order.
• An absolute desire to write epic stories full of wisdom and a larger vision – in that order!

The Barred Spiral Milky Way Galaxy
At the Edge of the Solar System
January 17, 2022 (Earth Time)

A dark monstrous apparition, slingshot from across another realm, camouflaged in a jagged, charcoal black rock, adroitly surfed the gravitational waves of the universe. Feverishly racing past the expanse of the Milky Way galaxy, it bolted to the edge of the solar system and arrived from above the plane of the ecliptic – gyrating closer to the sun.

The dark fiend continued its charge forward, cutting across the path of Venus – nearly crashing onto it, before it deftly decelerated and reached a stable orbit in a retrograde rotation around the pale-yellow planet. This tenacious temporary satellite immediately scrambled to steal a fragment of the protesting planet’s enormous momentum. Catapulted along the plain of the ecliptic, recklessly accelerating at an impossible speed – it shattered, splitting into two.

The newly formed rock dyad – a small black moon orbiting a sphere of death – pulled free from Venus. It continued its inebriated journey, salivating at the opportunity to rain a resolute chaos upon an orphic azure-blue bubble still 40 million kilometers away.

Unbeknownst to the alien rock dyad, a faint sliver of gold orbited nearby. The 7.5-meter-tall and 3.2-meter wide Sentinel Space Telescope clothed in a gold foil, with a giant heat-reflector shield strung along its back; cooled to 40 degrees Kelvin by a two stage, closed cycle Stirling cryocooler. Its 0.51-meter aluminum mirror, dutifully scanned any and all Inner Earth Objects larger than 90 meters in diameter that ever dared to fly across its 200-degree angle of regard.

The Sentinel Observatory, alarmed by the presence of the ghostly twin-headed monster, recorded the black rock dyad’s trajectory, shape, size, mass, and rotational dynamics, before it urgently sent a coded message to its home base in southern Japan.

Clay lowered his body down to her right side. “Smells girly in here too. Like you. Like roses and lemons?”

“Didn’t you know? All women have to burn candles periodically. It’s part of our handbook.”

“Really? Can’t say I did know. Do you have a copy of this handbook? You know. For science.”

Julia shrugged. “Maybe I ruined our secret. No written copies available for men.”

“Maybe you did.” He stared at her, his gaze roving across her body. “So you want to watch a movie or something?”

His blood was humming, his pulse racing. He hoped hers was too.

“A movie? Sure. Perfect.” She flipped the TV on, settling on the first movie she saw, some random comedy. “This one okay?”

His gaze locked on her. “Perfect.”

“Yep. Perfect.” She glanced down at her hands in her lap.

It was time to make a move. “So can I?” He scooted even closer as he ran the pad of his thumb over her bottom lip, her skin hot beneath his fingers.

She blinked. “Can you what?”

“Kiss you?” He hovered, almost touching her lips with his. But he waited.

“Please.” She took a ragged breath before he slid his hand to the back of her neck, pulling her even closer to him, his gaze locked with hers. He took his time, kissing her like she was a fine wine, something to savor. Like he was a drowning man and the only oxygen was through her.
