“Power must not be allowed to triumph all the time!” Nicholas had heard these words often enough growing up from his father Louis. It wasn’t until he was watching an old gangster movie on TV that he realized his father had borrowed the phrase he often said to him. Still, for some reason he had memorized his words and now sitting in the courtroom, his father’s words tormented him. The courtroom was located in the Federal building in downtown San Jose. Nicholas sat at the defense table and his mind wondered. His eyes fell on the courtroom stenographer as she walked in. She was just what he needed to take his mind off of his situation. He marveled with his thoughts thinking her naturally caramel tanned skin was beautiful, he was sure she had acquired it at birth, no tanning booth could make such a perfect even skin tone. Her skin accented excellently against her chocolate tailored suit. He had used the courtroom stenographer to take his mind off things on several occasions. She’d become the highlight of Nicholas’ days since his trial had started. He’d heard her speak often enough and knew that she had a soft -spoken pleasant voice that was soothing to his senses.

As his plane slowly touched down, Quinn closed his eyes and prayed to the god of his grandmother Ina Rosolado. He wasn’t praying that the plane would land safely. He was praying that his brother Nicholas would receive him with open arms. He was worried because he didn’t know how much his brother knew about the brief yet extended affair he’d had with his on again off again ex-fiancé and girlfriend Maëlle Moulard. It wasn’t something that he was proud of. In fact, he wanted to confess his sins to his brother, but he’d never had the chance. There just never seemed to be the right time when they were growing up together.

If you are of dating age or married, I wrote this book for you.

This is not a self-help or a how-to book. This is the story of the metamorphosis of a timid, fear filled child who finally blossomed into a warrior. I have many scars that no one can see, but they are healed now. Through these battles to become a warrior, I have helped the wounded souls that have come to me and seen them overcome their demons to stand tall and proud of who they are. It has brought me great joy.

Through the years, I have heard along the way that the ancient Chinese would fix their broken china cups or figurines with gold to make them whole again, and more valuable. I believe that humans can be repaired with love and a sense of self-worth. Each and every one of us are here for a purpose and we are given gifts to help fulfill our purpose.

I would love for you to come on this journey with me.

When we met the next week, we all laughed at the response we got from our families. That did a lot to break the ice. I brought a circle-of-friends candle holder with me. It had been broken, the heads snapped off, but I’d glued it back together and I said that it reminded me of our group. We continued our session with Mandy leading us in a meditation. We were to clear our minds of all the internal voices in our heads so we could have a clear mind when we talked with each other. It took us about two months to warm up to each other and trust the group enough to share our deepest, darkest feelings that we carried around with us. There was a sacred trust amongst us that anything we said stayed there and was never to leave the room.

It was several months in when one of the girls said to me something that I will never forget: “Donna, you are being held hostage by your mother. She is a narcissist.”

She then explained to us what a narcissist was.

I was not losing my mind. I was not coming apart. Maybe I could be free from her terror and begin to have my own life, make my own decisions. I knew it was going to be an uphill battle to free myself from her chains. But I now had a name for the demon—narcissism—and, by God, I was going to fight. I can never thank this woman enough for seeing what was strangling me.

Why hadn’t any of the doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists or counsellors I’d had before clued into this?

Ricardo strolled towards me, thanking me for coming. He grabbed my hand and paraded me around, introducing me to his other Eastview friends, Rashad and Victoria. Victoria was Mitchell’s girlfriend, who dressed like a tomboy. A little more and her pants would’ve been hugging her knees; she also wore big hoop earrings that could’ve been a bracelet for an infant.

Rashad seemed timid, hesitating to open his mouth; he was on the basketball team with Mitchell and Ricardo. I must admit that Eastview had some fine black boys that attended their school, but their style of fashion was different from the kids at Chester.

“Hey everybody, this is my friend, Sasha. She’s joining us to help protest for Mitchell.”

“Does she even know Mitchell?” one guy shooting pool said.

“It doesn’t matter,” said Ricardo. “She is here to help, and it’s good that we can get people from other schools to help us.”

The dude sucked in through his teeth and kept shooting pool.

Ignoring Ricardo, Victoria narrowed her eyes. “So, how do you know Mitchell again?”

“I don’t know him. I’m just here to help.”

After I told her that me and Ricardo played together as childhood friends, her face became at ease and she started smiling. I told her I went to Chester Academy.

“You go to that rich school. You wouldn’t know about anything that happens to the black boys in public school,” she said.

My Writing Space by CS Hale – Guest Blog and Giveaway

My Writing Space

My writing space is usually my bed. Whether it’s the first draft I’m doing longhand in a notebook, the latest edition I’m working on in Word, or the printout in the green binder I’m reading through and making editing notes on, I’m usually curled up on my bed, though sometimes I pick the sofa instead. I need the space so I can lay out all my notes and reference materials, and I’ve never been able to study or be creative at a desk. Pay bills, create purchase orders, etc in my long ago life as an administrative assistant – yes. Write – no.

Angela Grimalke appears more blonde bombshell than the gremlin she is. But there is no denying her supernatural truth after her clumsiness gets her fired from her modeling career. Forced to work for her family’s upscale airline, she spends her days slinging luggage and wishing her parents would get off her back about finding a nice gremlin guy to settle down with.

Relationships were the last thing on her mind, not that her family would accept that.

For Dave Ford his frequent business travel made it next to impossible for him to find a woman who could tolerate his chaotic schedule. Which is why he appreciates Angela. Neither of them are looking for love, but Dave feeds Angela’s addiction for chocolate while she provides him with the chaos to keep him on his toes.

However, as Angela’s parents bombard her with a parade of “eligible” gremlin men at their weekly family dinners, she finds herself torn between who she longs to be and her family’s expectations. Will she give in and live the life of magic they want for her? Or risk it all by to confessing to Dave that she isn’t human?

Focusing on the sparks of energy skittering along her fingers, she sent her magic into the printer. Angela might look like the cover model she’d once been but no one would guess that Windsor’s check-in counter was currently staffed by a pair of gremlins. Dave’s day—or rather night and morning—were about to become a little more exciting than he’d imagined. Dave would have a nice, relaxing flight to London while his garment bag went to Cleveland.

She tamped down the tendrils of guilt rising in her gut. It needed to be done. It was this bag or some mishap not of her choosing. Besides, who in their right mind would check a Louis Vuitton garment bag? First class contained specially built closets in which to hang them. She searched Dave’s thoughts again.

Where have I seen her before?

Angela snapped right back out and jerked her head down. She attached the claim sticker to his boarding pass and handed it to Dave, keeping her focus on the counter. Hopefully, her smile hid the panic now whirring in her chest like the engines that would take Dave across the Atlantic. “Enjoy your flight, Mr. Ford.”

“Always do.” With a small salute, Dave headed toward the security queue. What were the chances he’d be so cheerful in the morning?

How to Handle Negative Criticism by Lauren Sevier – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Lauren Sevier will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

How to Handle Negative Criticism

Negative criticism is, in my opinion, an invaluable tool for the success of an author. Or at least, it’s been an invaluable tool in the way that I’ve been able to hone my craft. Writing a book or any artistic endeavor eventually always comes to the same crossroads. The place where artistic integrity meets consumerism. As an Indie published author, I’m also the CEO of my own small business, so at a certain point my books transition from pieces of literary art into products to be sold. One of the best ways I’ve found to accurately pinpoint pitfalls I have with my writing and to assess how well my marketing is doing is getting criticism from readers. Are they all saying the same thing? Am I reaching the readers with my marketing that will enjoy my book? Do I get more comments about my editing than the actual content of the book? All of these criticisms and questions help me to evaluate the state of my writing, the state of my business, and how to move forward in a way that will benefit my career as a whole. It’s good to be told what your weaknesses are so that you can put the effort in to work on those things. I never want to stop learning or growing, I want to always be pushing myself to be better or to step outside of my comfort zone. Hopefully, in doing that, I’ll have a long career ahead of me.

The sunset over the bay was the most beautiful Liz had ever seen, but perhaps it’s because she knew it would be the last. It set the sky aflame, burning deep into her memory. She wore pearls in her hair and a crown adorned with so many shimmering diamonds it appeared to be made from seawater and starlight itself. Every inch of her porcelain skin had been cleansed and massaged with lavender oil. An extravagant lamb, headed for slaughter.

The silk and lace of her wedding gown clung to the curves of her body and flowed like water around her as she moved. Her figure, too curvy to be considered fashionable, was squeezed into an acceptable shape by a corset inlaid with whale bones. Never had she been more radiant, her flame-like hair mirroring the sunset outside.

A woman at the peak of her life, never more ready to begin, and it was her ending.

“Tell me again,” She said firmly, adjusting the pins near her left ear.

“Your highness, it doesn’t matter how-

“Tell me again.” She snapped, turning piercing blue eyes on Priestess Elba whose words fell away in an instant. Her breath hitched and her eyes fell to the mosaic beneath her feet.

“You’ll walk down the front steps of the palace to a boat waiting at the edge of the water. Your parents will walk behind you and all the people of Silver City will be there to witness your descent.”

Liz closed her eyes tight, imagining it in her mind, biting her lower lip hard enough that she worried she would break the skin. If she prepared herself now, perhaps she could retain some dignity in these final moments.

Psychokinetic teen Phaedra Thorne is back! Her life consists of balancing her high school and college courses while trying to keep the peace between her older brother Kurt and little sister Nadia. On top of that, their schizophrenic and psychokinetic mom remains locked away in the attic. Believe it or not, things are better than they have ever been.

Those “better times” go up in flames when the only sanctuary the Thornes have ever known–their home–is burnt to the ground. With Kurt severely injured and their mother missing, Phae and Nadia have been left in the hands of the supernatural foster care system. Just as the Thorne sisters start to settle in with her temporary family, a blast from their horrific past comes to their foreboding rescue. Phae has good reason to be apprehensive about the new arrangements, considering many supernaturals want to buy the burnt out husk of a home and have taken a liking to her psychokinesis and Nadia’s uncanny prowess. There’s only one thing Phae can do. Find their mother.

Having been kidnapped, assaulted, and sold to the highest bidder, Phae will have to learn how to trust other members of her estranged family, if she has any hopes of saving the immediate one she loves.

Kurt smashed in the bedroom door just as I pulled Nadia out of bed and into my arms. We only kept the door locked out of fear that mom might sneak out of the attic at night. It wasn’t much of a barrier, but we hoped it would be enough to wake us before she tore into the room if it came to that.

“Take her.” I tried to hand my frightened little sister off to him. “I’ll get mom.”

“No.” Shaking his head, he grabbed my elbow and guided both of us out the broken door. “You two get out of here. I’m going after mom.”

“You’re insane.” I coughed as the smoke thickened. Tears burned my eyes. Crackling came from overhead like the roof was on fire. “You don’t have your powers anymore. Mine may be out of control, but at least, they have the twisted tendency to work in my favor.”

“Look around you, Phae. The last thing we need is anything else out of control. Now, get Nadia out of here!” He shoved me toward the stairs before taking off toward the attic trapdoor.

More cursing went through my brain, but he was right. I had to get our little sister out. I patted her back as she coughed and cried against my shoulder.

Instead of fleeing, I went back into the room and found my satchel and my purse in the chair where I had left them.

About the Author: I’m Marcia Colette and I love to write urban fantasy, YA, horror, and paranormal romance. Since I was never a voracious reader until later in life, I try to write stories that I like to read, and for readers who don’t have a lot of time in their busy lives.

My first published novel started with Half Breed (formerly known as Stripped) and my fantasy life took off from there. My next novel was a paranormal romance entitled Unstable Environment and I also released Bittersweet (YA), Hazardous Environment (Paranormal Romance), The Spider Inside Her (Urban Fantasy), and Deadlier by the Dozen (Urban Fantasy). I have sold several short stories and novellas to Mocha Memoirs Press and I continued my Alexa York series with Purple Sword Publications.

When I’m not reading or writing, I live my best life in the real world as an IT Manager and enjoy getting into trouble with my manga-loving daughter. I can’t draw, so she’s out of luck with that one. However, I always write a little piece of her into each of my characters.

And before I forget, I also write science fiction under another pen name.

Four sisters search for true family in this story of resilience by a Newbery Honor author.

When the McCready sisters’ parents are washed away in a tsunami, their Great Aunt Martha volunteers to have them live with her on her farm in British Columbia. But while they are traveling there, Martha dies unexpectedly, forcing Fiona, the eldest, to come up with a scheme to keep social services from separating the girls – a scheme that will only work if no one knows they are living on their own.

Fiona approaches their grouchy and indifferent neighbor Al and asks if he will pretend to be their live-in legal guardian should papers need to be signed or if anyone comes snooping around. He reluctantly agrees, under the condition that they bring him dinner every night.

As weeks pass, Fiona takes on more and more adult responsibilities, while each of the younger girls finds their own special role in their atypical family – But even if things seem to be falling into place, Fiona is sure it’s only a matter of time before they are caught.

Written in Polly Horvath’s inimitable style, gentle humor and tough obstacles are woven throughout this story about the bonds of sisterhood and what makes a family.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

THE McCready sisters, Fiona, fourteen, Marlin, twelve, Natasha, ten, and Charlie, eight, were raised in a missionary family. They had been happily and safely moving from pillar to post all over the world when their parents, taking their first vacation ever, having come into a small sum of money from an aging uncle who “felt it strongly” that they had never had a honeymoon, invited them to Thailand, where he ran a small hotel. The three of them and the hotel were swept away in a tsunami. The four girls were, at the time, living in Borneo, in a small cottage far back in the jungle without benefit of internet or phone service, being seen after by a visiting church volunteer who couldn’t continue to take care of them as she had other plans. So the church had a Mrs. Weatherspoon from Australia come to stay with them until someone in their family could step forward. That took a year.

Mrs. Weatherspoon sent out appeals to all the relatives she and the girls could find except for a great- aunt, Martha McCready, who lived off the coast of British Columbia. The girls’ mother, when opening Martha’s annual Christmas card, called her “that peculiar woman hiding in the woods.” Mrs. Weatherspoon said they would save her as a last resort. But surely someone more suitable would respond first. There were aunts and uncles in Tampa, Florida; Lansing, Michigan; Shreveport, Louisiana; and Kingsport, Tennessee. That was the lot. It took a while for the responses to Mrs. Weatherspoon’s appeal to trickle in. The mail pickup and delivery in the jungle was unreliable and slow. After receiving the appeal, the relatives then had to think about it. These were their sister’s or brother’s children, it was true. But there were four of them. Fitting four children into an already- established household was no small matter. Some of them wrote to ask Mrs. Weatherspoon to write them if no one else had come forward. When Mrs. Weatherspoon did, they had to think about it all over again. This took time. And none of them had met the McCready children. Mr. and Mrs. McCready had become estranged from their brothers and sisters many years before when they had made what the siblings considered a “very weird choice,” joining a church that none of them had heard of and of which, for some reason never explained to the girls, they all disapproved.

“That was fun,” said Fee, smiling up at him when he walked her to the door of her house. She looked down at the zippered tote that blocked the door. “What’s this?”

Hopefully it was what Jed had arranged with Joanna to have dropped off. If not, Fee had an empty an empty animal carrier. A strident pair of meows instantly assured him Joanna had done her part. Now, if Ms. Independence hadn’t completely changed in twenty years, the surprise he and Ailey had managed to pull off would be a good one.

Oh, thank God.

The pair of kittens had been born of a Ragdoll mother and a father “from a nice neighborhood,” as the breeder had said with a rueful shrug. Their lineage had made them both beautiful and affordable. The fact that they were the last two siblings in the litter explained Ailey’s reluctance to separate them.

“Everything you’ll need for them is in the house,” he said, taking her keys from her and unlocking the door, since she showed no sign of doing it on her own. She held a kitten in each hand. “Joanna took care of all of that this evening while we were gone. Ailey and I picked them up yesterday while you were working. They spent the night with me last night. They’re really good roommates.”

Inside, Jed poured them each a glass of wine while Fee got acquainted with Mistletoe and Holly, the names she gave the fuzzy kittens immediately. When they’d fallen asleep on the cushioned bed on the hearth of the pretty but completely nonfunctioning fireplace in the living room, Fee sat across the table from Jed. She mopped at the tears that insisted on rolling down her cheeks.

“I never wanted Ailey to feel responsible for me, but she was worried about me being alone through the holidays. I hate that.”

“No, you don’t, and you’ve got black gunk on your face. It means you raised a good kid. What more would you want from her than that she be a compassionate human being?” Like her mother.

“Oh, good grief.” She went down the hallway to the bathroom, coming back a few minutes later with a scrubbed-clean face. “That’s what I get for trying to look good for a date.” She blushed as soon as she’d said the words, and looked around as if she was searching for something to unsay them with.

Jed got up, going over to where she stood and taking her into his arms. For a moment, he just held her, giving all of her curves time to adjust to his planes and angles. Then he kissed her, taking his time about it, thinking…no, not thinking at all. Just feeling. It had been so long since he’d held a woman he lo…he cared about. Too long, Heather would say, but she’d know, too, what he’d been waiting for.

“You were my best and last love,” she’d told him once during her illness, holding his hand in her thin one and laying her fingers up against his. “I’m not going to be yours. I’m good with that.”

It should have felt wrong to let go of one love while holding another, but it didn’t. For the first time since Heather’s death, Jed gave credence to the thought that he might someday be happy again. Not yet, but someday.

“The tree-lighting at the Common is tomorrow night,” he said. “Want to go with me?”

She nodded. “Most of the stores are opening back up afterward. A couple of the Klatchers are going to open Silver Threads after the lighting and man the cutting table. Ailey and I had planned to go.” She smiled, but there was an extra shine in her eyes.

“Maybe you should kiss me again.”

“Maybe I should.”

About the Author: Liz Flaherty—Stories from the Heart—is a USA Today bestselling contemporary author. Retired from the post office, she spends non-writing time sewing, quilting, and doing whatever else she wants to.

She and her husband Duane live in the old farmhouse in North Central Indiana they moved to in 1977. They’ve talked about moving, but really…40-some years’ worth of stuff? It’s not happening. It would require removing old baseball trophies from the attic and dusting the pictures of the Magnificent Seven, their grandchildren. (The dusting’s not happening, either—just saying…)

The Hardest Part About Writing

The hardest part about writing is figuring out what to say in a cohesive, interesting manner. There are a lot of ideas rattling around in my head but picking one and formulating it into a full-blown story is tough. It’s like watching a home renovation show and seeing great ideas for designing an office; lots of great ideas doesn’t magically turn your second bedroom into a beautiful office space! It takes hard work and determination.

Maybe it’s the engineer in me, but I take a very pragmatic approach toward writing. If I start with an idea, I consider what it is about that idea that may be interesting to an audience. Do I want to target a specific audience with this idea? If I do, will that audience care? If there isn’t an audience to receive your work, then you’re really just writing for yourself – which is perfectly fine! – but may not be the best way to expend your energy. If I’m going to put an idea out into the world, I want to make certain that it benefits someone other than myself, my hubbie and my cat.

Then, I create a plan. A plan of who and what the story is about. Who is my protagonist? What journey do I want the protagonist to experience? Do they come out better or worse at the end of that journey? Who is the antagonist? Is there a mentor along the way? Is there an overall theme, or am I just having fun with the story?

Once I’ve got a plan, I start to chart out the story beats. These are the main action points of the story, and need to connect together in a logical, enjoyable flow. Post-It notes or index cards are great for this, as you can move beats around easily if something is not flowing well. At any given time, my workspace may look like something from A Beautiful Mind! I need to see the logical plan before I can apply any creativity; if you want to make writing easier on yourself and save countless hours of frustration later, I highly recommend this process. When you have a plan and an organized flow, it’s easy to improvise and get creative from it – just like Louis Armstrong was so exceptional at improvising from a standard song.

Then it’s writing time! With a solid story flow in place, it becomes natural to fill in the story beats with scenes, actions and emotion. Perhaps illustrations if your story allows them. Notes are a crucial step in the process. I also recommend bouncing ideas and written pages off people you trust and whose opinion you value; what may seem like a brilliant idea in your head may land like a lead balloon in someone else’s.

And even after all these steps, writing is hard! The ideas may flow, but the writing may not always come easily. Be kind to yourself, take a break when you need to, and stick to your plan. And most importantly, stay true to who you are!

Smoke and chemicals mixed, and strange sounds came from the now empty lab. Sounds like… gurgling and burping? The door of the lab smashed open and out came…

… a small, roundish shape! It was midnight black and had the size and form of an upside-down cereal bowl. It slithered instead of rolled. It looked like melted dark chocolate but had a perfume like smell.

Suddenly, two roundish holes opened and turned pale blue. It had eyes! It could see! What in the world could this creature be?

Why… it’s Bartholomew Blob!
