New Year’s Resolutions

When my hubby and I left the fifth wheel all snug in a storage space under its cover until next spring, I said the holidays will be here before you know it. He chuckled and said, “Don’t I know it.”

In the blink of an eye, Christmas is knocking at the door, filled with family, friends and a great time to be had by all. Another year passed, but what was accomplished? Surprisingly, I met all of my 2019 New Year’s resolutions of 5,000 words written each week, won NaNoWriMo, 50,000 words in 30 days (but it was close),a new book contracted, I managed two, and spend quality time with family and friends. My list was short but attainable.  I try to keep it that way each year. 

This year in front of the Christmas tree decorated with bright multi-colored lights and ornaments that evoke wonderful memories, I ponder what the New Year will bring. I hope to have more quiet walks with the dog, more playtime with our parrot, take time to appreciate  and enjoy each day,  and  while working towards my professional goals, gonna up my word count goal to 6,000 words written in a week this year, take more time for family and friends.

A Library is a Magical Place Where Imagination Takes Flight – My Favorite Memories Spent at the Local Library

I am probably dating myself but one of my favorite childhood memories is waiting every Wednesday, during the summer, around noon for the bookmobile. There was always a line of children at the bookmobile stop waiting and chatting about the books they’d read the previous week or the ones they were hoping to check out this week. I loved books with adventures of far off planets or tales of vampires, werewolves, faeries, and unicorns. I penned my first vampire romance at the tender age of 11 or 12. I believe Dark Shadows TV show could have been an influence but so were the vampire books I enjoyed.

Spending a lot of time in the local library, I remember fondly, the quiet whispers, the sound of pages turning and the smell of books, ink, and pencil shaving. Also the memory of holding my breath as I looked up a treasured book in the card catalog, and the thrill of finding it available to check out. Once I had all my adventures gathered, I’d start for home with my stack of books.

Today, I still roam our local state of the art library, with its computer labs, 3D printers, research materials on every subject you can imagine in any media form you want. Sometimes, a library is just the right place to settle your laptop, pull out your work in progress notes, and write several chapters surrounded by the quiet serenity of stacks of books. It was a beautiful summer evening lit by a full moon. What harm could come from simply popping over to Mystic Maples, digging my toes into the earth and see if there is any truth to the rumors? She shrugged. Sis wouldn’t have told me about it, if she hadn’t thought it worth investigating. Right?

New Year’s Resolutions

Sure enough, another year has flown by at the speed of light. All I could do was catch hold of its tail and be catapulted into my computer chair hoping to finish this blog before the bell of Christmas present tolls. Traditions – Our Christmas Tree

Allergic to pine trees as I child, we had an aluminum silver tree with a color wheel that reflected colors over the tree’s shimmering branches. Not a pine but served the purpose. Santa left presents under it and we sang carols around it. Our special ornaments were hung on the tree along with candy canes and blue, green and red balls.

These days, you can’t tell the real trees from the artificial.  Our seven foot tree with large sweeping boughs to the ground is put up the day after Thanksgiving.   Since the Blue Spruce is artificial, no problems with pine needles and drying out.

Christmas ornaments are a family tradition. We receive a special ornament all our own each year. This tradition is handed down from generation to generation dating back to the pioneers.

Our tree will never be a fancy designer tree with matching babbles and bows, but it is decorated with years of love. Ornaments range from Keepsake Frosty Friends, to handmade ones by friends and family. I’d guess there are over 150 ornaments we hang every year while reminiscing where the decoration came from and playing Christmas carols, joined by our parrot, dog and turtle. A relaxing and memorable start to our sometimes crazy Christmas season.

Homemade candy is another scrumptious and fun tradition. Fantasy Fudge, Divinity and my all-time favorite Beaver Dams.  What are Beaver Dams you ask?  Simple and tasty.  Take a 12 oz. package of butterscotch chips, melt them in a double boiler, stir in half-package of crispy Chow Mein Noodles and one-half can (about 8 oz) of cocktail peanuts.
