Within the last year, acclaimed fashion designer, Carmen Davenport, has witnessed the ups and downs of being romantically linked to one of New York’s most prominent men. On the heel of her engagement to Jay Santiago, a Puerto Rican businessman, she learns her oldest daughter has been kidnapped. A direct result of an ongoing war between her fiancé and a disgruntled drug kingpin, Carmen becomes determined to put an official end to the conflict. She sets out to track down her daughter only to be met with unforeseen obstacles. A criminal investigation, led by her soon-to-be ex-husband, Michael Kane, leaves her fiancé behind bars. Due to Jay’s incarceration, Carmen is placed in the care of his estranged cousin, Gully. He constantly reminds Carmen of the price of fame, ultimately forcing her to take matters in her own hands. Determined to bring her daughter to safety, she takes a no holds barred approach to ensure her daughter’s return.

This is the fourth book in the Diamond Collections series by Vogue, continuing the saga of Carmen Davenport and her relationship Jay Santiago. Now, his past criminal enterprises have reached out and touched Carmen’s daughter, Kristian, and Carmen is determined to make things right.

I’ve not read the previous three books in the series and was able to follow the action—the author does a good job at explaining the characters and their relationships to each other—but I feel like a reader would more fully enjoy the book is she were to start with the beginning and see how the characters grow and develop in their relationships. There were a lot of anger issues going on that made me wonder why Carmen and Jay were even together, and I feel if I truly understood the entire dynamics of their relationship some of the dialogue between the two would make more sense to me.

Even with that, though, this book was enjoyable. It’s definitely fast-paced, and the reader didn’t know what was going to happen next. I could definitely see this as part of a TV series—and it would be interesting to see who the author would have in mind for the main characters. It’s dark, gritty, and in your face—filled with secrets and revelations.

I understand it’s part of a proposed 10 book series, so it would be very interesting to see where Vogue takes her characters next.

Erica Donato, Brooklyn girl, urban history grad student and single mom, is researching the 1930s when Brownsville was the home of the notorious organized criminals the newspapers called Murder Inc. She quickly learns that even in rapidly changing Brooklyn, Brownsville remains much as it was. It is still poor, it is still tough, and it still breeds fighters and gangs. Doing field research, Erica stops in at the landmark local library and meets Savanna, a young woman who is the pride of her mother and her bosses, and headed for an elite college and a future. A few days later, Savanna is found beaten and left for dead. Her anguished mother is everywhere, insisting someone knows something. After a massive, angry demonstration, a young girlfriend of Savanna s is found dead, too. Is there a connection? Did perfect Savanna have a few secrets? Erica s curious. She’s doing a thesis on Brooklyn in the past. That involves looking into the people who were around then and their activities. The author has a good knowledge of Brooklyn. She talks about the past and the buildings that are gone as well as about the ones that still stand. She adds in the criminal element that is still present today. When she adds in a murder, too, it starts to get even more interesting.

Inner city gangs are still around. In earlier days they were different nationalities but the crime and fear squads have always been there. When Erica goes to the local library to do research, four black boys harass her. Luckily, the museum guard comes to her rescue.

Even when they know who attacked a young black girl, nothing can be done. They have solid alibis even if they are lies. Life starts to get dangerous in the ‘hood. When the next girl shows up dead, the case ramps up. While Erica is concerned about the girls, she also dealing with two oldsters who lived in the neighborhood in the time period she’s researching. One of them asks her to find out what happened to her brother. The two ladies are good friends but they fight as much as they get along.

This is a good look at what things are like in the poorer sections of town. Nowadays it happens in the heart of the city as well. Everyone is searching for power, money, and more. The story is good, the motives are mixed and the killer was a surprise. This isn’t any happily ever after but it is life. I’d read another in this series.

But the high school football star was convicted and imprisoned for those murders, leading Cal to suspect that the killer is still out there.

Now, the body count is rising again. The monster’s sights are set on counselor Mona Monroe, Cal’s best friend’s widow…and the woman he’s always loved. Can Cal stop the killer before Mona becomes the next victim?

I’ll make a confession. I’m a fan of Ms. Herron’s Harlequin Intrigue books and there’s probably not one I haven’t read. So when the opportunity came to review one of her stories, well, I jumped at it.

I haven’t ready any of the other titles in the Graveyard Falls series, but I do have a weakness for settings like these and small towns with loads of secrets that are just waiting to be uncovered.

The one and only thing I didn’t like about this story was there early on there seemed to be a lot of information dumping about the past murders and Mona’s background. However, I did enjoy turning the pages to see if my hunches were right. It seemed just about everyone in town had something to hide.

As always with the author’s books, this was a fast paced story and I found myself sitting down for an hour or more as the stakes got higher. As well as the suspense aspect of the story, there’s also the drama of Mona trying to find her birth mother, and her relationship with Cal who just happens to be Mona’s dead husband’s best friend. There’s conflict and sexual tension like only Ms. Herron can deliver.

The ending, well, I won’t give it away and spoil this book for you. It’s made me what to check out more stories in the series, and if like me, you like a dash of romance with your mystery, then add this one to your reading list.

The Greatest Myth Ever Dispelled …

Italy. A tough master of novices, Father Dante encounters the bold young priest Antonio who challenges his identity and accuses him of being THE Saint Nicholas. But despite the Father faking his death, a determined Antonio discovers a rather alive Dante arrayed in kilt and armor.

In return for Antonio’s silence—and to protect the town from attracting all manner of darkness—Dante agrees to tell his life story. Without explanation, Dante orders Antonio to meet him at night in the abandoned Cathedral, the site of a former battle that the Church has kept secret for a generation.

From the Dark Ages’ when Poet-Sorcerers ruled kings, to the Holy Land when a new civilization was rising, to Revolutionary France where love is lost and gained, Father Dante pursues the one responsible for both his master and his mother’s deaths:

Black Peter, his brother.

This book begins with Antonio, a young novice, curious about Father Dante– there’s a lot of mysterious things about him. Antonio begins to suspect that Father Dante is actually the legendary Saint Nicholas and confronts him about it. And thus sets the framework for this book: Father Dante “dies” and, to stop Antonio from talking, agrees to tell his life story to the young priest. The rest of the book is told from Nicholas’ POV, with an occasional comment from Antonio to show us where the two are physically during the book.

This is a very ambitious book, spanning centuries and different historical eras. This is both the book’s strength and its weakness. There are so many things going on and is a bit disjointed that it is sometimes hard to follow.

It is worth pushing through, though, because the characterization is wonderfully done, and the book is definitely filled with action. It is not a lighthearted book, but is a dark look at an interesting figure. The author has obviously done his research into not only St. Nicholas, but also into the history of the times.

STRINGS OF GLASS (A Sydney Rye Novel, #4) is the fourth novel in Emily Kimelman’s Sydney Rye Series of mystery novels. This series features a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. It is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don’t mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!

Sydney Rye is hanging out in India with her boyfriend, Dan, reading paperbacks and sipping beer. No violence and no reminders of her past. But when she and Blue, are attacked by a pack of wild dogs, Sydney starts to feel that old itch again; to do good by being bad.

While Sydney struggles to accept her true nature she realizes that it is the only way to end decades of abuse and exploitation. But Rye fears that she will lose herself, becoming no better than the monster she fights against.

New to Sydney Rye? The first book in the series, UNLEASHED (A Sydney Rye Novel, #1) is FREE.

Since the first book is free, I definitely recommend you pick at least that one up, but you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t read them all. All of the books can be read as stand-alone, but the character development of Sydney Rye through the series is one of the best parts of the books.

Sydney has come a long way since she was Joy Humbolt–she and Dan have settled into a calm, relaxing routine. But, Sydney’s nature doesn’t let her be calm and relaxed for too long.

Dan is long-suffering–which is very very sweet; however, Sydney is drawn into more adventure when she rescues Anita, a reporter who is in danger of being raped and murdered because she’s investigating the atrocities of one man–a sexual predator with the power and money to protect himself. Just the kind of person Sydney loves to take down.

The action is pretty well non-stop and the reappearance of Mulberry into Sydney’s life creates not only tension between her and Dan, but an interesting twist for the next book in the series.

Megan finds the strength to trust and love again when she meets soft-spoken Kevin. He supports Megan’s transformation from abused wife to confident woman. Life is full of potential with her new place, love and career, but Jason looms like a dark cloud. Unfortunately, Jason is not a big fan of happy endings, especially hers.

With one of the most powerful first lines I’ve read (“Dear God, would you please kill my daddy? Amen”), Seeking Shelter pulls no punches as it shows how one woman, Megan, grows from a down-trodden, abused wife to a confident, secure woman.

Seeking Shelter isn’t at its heart a romance (though there is the relationship she eventually develops with Kevin, she doesn’t even meet him until nearly one hundred pages into the story); it’s a suspense novel with the bones of women’s fiction.

The strength of the story is in its characters. We meet a crew of folks who are so incredibly developed, unique and interesting, they’ll keep you reading even when the plot hits a bump. The bumps are very small, and the story is thoroughly interesting. The children broke my heart at the beginning, but it was lifted as I watched them change and grow with the kind of resilience only the very young seem to have.  Megan struggles to overcome her fear… and who could blame her?  She was all but held prisoner by her husband and abused verbally and physically. We’re meant to hate Jason, and we do.

Kevin was exactly what our heroine needed. Soft-spoken, calm, a little bit unsure, he’s the complete antithesis of Jason. Don’t think he’s weak, however. We find out just how strong he is before the last page.

I’ve not read anything by this author before, and despite my few issues with some of the plot points (and the ease with which the ends are tied) I was truly amazed at her skill with words and character building. I’d not hesitate to pick up another book by Ms. Wyatt, and really did enjoy this one.

After two years of intense training by the best special ops teams in the US military, The CIA and the world situation propel the team into dangerous and complex missions that threaten the world’s balance of power and tests the team to the ragged edge of their abilities.

Author Mike McNeff continues the saga of the Guardians, first introduced in his first novel GOTU and takes the reader on another action packed roller coaster of a story. You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat as Robin leads his men while they capture international criminals, rescue hostages and fight terrorists all over the globe…with the help of unlikely partners. After a bit of a slow set up and “meet and greet” with our players (this is the second book in the series, and the author deftly handled helping newbies like me know who’s who here without boring folks who’ve read the first book), things speed right up.

We’re following a group of carefully assembled, highly-trained operatives who operate well under the radar. This book isn’t just about one mission, but covers several with barely a breath in between. I’m a big fan of Robert Ludlum, and this was much like one of his novels: intense, full of intrigue and action.

That said, although I really loved Robin and his family, and there were some interesting characters, the focus was very much on the story and not as much on the characters. It’s very much a plot-driven book. Understand, that doesn’t mean the characters were cardboard cut-outs, just that I didn’t get to know them as deeply as I’m used to when reading other genres.

Still, worry for our cast of operatives definitely kept me turning pages. If you’re a fan of books full of intrigue (frequently of the political/governmental type) and like heart-pounding action, I highly recommend this book. I’ve not heard of the author before, but I’ll remember him now!

The author is truly skilled and, with her apt descriptions and well chosen words, she  really amps up the suspense in this story.  There are a lot of twists and turns in the story and Ms. terrell keeps you guessing to the end.

Willing to put her life at risk to find out what really happened to her beloved Aunt Livvy, and why jewels would be addressed to her aunt, Vinnie plunges ahead with her usual tenacity, bravery, and keen wits to solve and survive this mystery.

JM Griffin has a fantastic voice for cozy mystery genre. Above the fact that I enjoyed the plot of this story, and the unique and varied characters, I loved to read just to let the words and tone roll over me.

For Love of Livvy is a fun, light-hearted mystery. Vinnie is a fun heroine, smart (most of the time) and easy-going, with a group of friends and family that would drive most folks a little crazy. When she receives a package that turns out to be gemstones, and then finds another set of them in the house, she knows the game is afoot. The police are tight-lipped about what exactly is going on, and despite the attraction she feels for the hunky lead detective, she takes matters in her own hands.

Livvy is such fun to read about. She’s seriously attracted to the detective on the case, but also has the super attractive Aaron, her new tenant, to add to the equation. Her gay best friend has a new squeeze and he’s such a hoot. Her parents are a little crazy, too, and the mix makes the book an entertaining read. While perhaps not the most intellectually challenging mystery, it does exactly what I look for in a cozy: entertains.

I can’t wait to pick up the next book in the series and I recommend it to all mystery lovers.

When this story starts Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller’s dog-walking business on Manhattan’s exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.

But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim–and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.

Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

I had the pleasure of reviewing the third book in this series a few months ago here — there’s nothing like doing things backwards. Fortunately, enough time has passed and things have been busy enough since March that I was able to enjoy this first book in the Sydney Rye series just as much as I did the last! In fact, I’m ready to read the second and then the third book again as soon as things slow down.

Emily Kimelman has created a heroine who doesn’t take any flack off anyone–which sometimes leads to issues when it comes to jobs. She lucks into a deal where she buys a dog walking business, but something smells about the whole deal…and it’s not long before Joy Humbolt finds herselt deep into murder and corruption. People think she’s privy to information she doesn’t have–but how do you prove a negative? Not that they are giving her a chance to try.

This book is edge-of-the-seat exciting–and I hope the series will continue. I really really like the heroine, even more so since I know now how she got from point A to point B. Thanks, Ms. Kimelman…and I’m ready for some more adventures with Sydney Rye and Blue.
