This time he’s not asking permission; he’s going to put a stop to the trouble stalking Michelle and her friends—and win her heart for good.

I expected a lot from this book, because the quality of the authors’ previous works has preceeded them. Let me review this anthology one story at a time.

First, we have Against the Heart by Kat Martin (Meri’s story). She’s escaping a one-night-stand who’s also, unfortunately, the father of her daughter. This guy wants to bleed her dry for every penny she has, and threatens her kid on top of it. So Meri runs … right into Ian Brodie.

Man, I loved Ian and his father. I have this feeling they may have been in other of Ms. Martin’s books, but I’ve never “met” them before. Ian is steadfast, honorable and loving. His dad is heartbroken from his wife’s death, incorrigible and hides his heart pretty well, until he gets thawed out by Meri’s young daughter, who basically adopts him as a grandpa.

There is no question this story’s suspense was first rate. I was absolutely worried about Meri and, as I got to know the rest of the crew in Spokane, worried about them, too. It seemed her ex would stop at nothing (which included beating up a friend and kidnapping) and, even though I knew in my head this story would have a happy ending, I wasn’t sure I was going to make it through reading about them getting there. I did. Barely, and with heart pounding.

The part I didn’t love as much was the romance. Not that I didn’t adore Meri and Ian, I just couldn’t buy they could fall in love–like the “let’s get married and live happily every after forever” love–in that short a time. Honestly a ‘happy for now’ ending probably would have contented me more (and I don’t say that often).

Next comes Shaken by Rebecca Zanetti (Michelle’s story) and this one really had it all. I felt it was the strongest, most well-rounded story of the trio. The suspense was great (though I really did struggle with why she felt ANY kind of responsibility to her mother…but that is what the entire story hinged on so it had to exist). Evan was a take-no-prisoners (and take no crap) kind of guy, and refused to let Michelle get away with much when it came to their previous and current/potential relationship. I also adored Wolfe…his character was honestly about the most well-rounded one in the story! I think several of the secondary characters are also part of other books the author has written, and I’m definitely going to hunt those down. If her other books are as good as this story, she’s going to be an auto buy author for me.

Lastly we have Echoes of the Past by Alexandra Ivy (Melanie’s story). Another second chance romance! One of my favorite tropes when done right, and this one did pretty well. I did feel a bit of what I’m sure was a word count constraint here, so we weren’t able to see as much of their backstories as I would have liked. Still, the romance and the suspense both worked for me here.

All in all, I think this was a pretty solid romantic suspense anthology. I got to find two “new to me” authors that I’ll check out for longer releases and found a good amount of escapism and enjoyment from this well-written trio of inter-connected stories. If you’re a fan of any of these authors, or just the genre in general, you could do worse than grabbing yourself a copy and reading the day away.

A bargain deal on a safari + one dead body = An adventure no one could plan for.

Naomi and her estranged sister are off on a trip of a lifetime—an African safari, a bucket list trip for Naomi on which she got a last-minute deal. Naomi thinks traveling with her sister will be the worst part of her African safari until she finds one of their fellow travelers, the unlikable Dr. Higgins, dead. She gets more adventure than she bargained for when she starts investigating what she thinks is murder but the luxury lodge says was a tragic accident. She only has a few vacation days, and a few game drives, to find the killer.

What a fun start to a series– I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the author goes with this.

I enjoyed the main character, Naomi, and it was great fun watching her interact with the rest of the characters on the safari trip she was able to score – especially with her sister as they are together for an extended time for the first time in many years (their dad “got Naomi” in the divorce while the sister stayed with Mom).  They were not estranged as much as not as familiar with each other as sisters who are raised together can be. I really hope Charlotte plays a part in the rest of the series….she was a good foil for Naomi.

I can understand Naomi wanting to know what happened and not just brush things under the rug. Once she figured out that there had been a murder, her innate sense of justice would not just let it be swept under a rug.  Besides, the internet was down…what else is a girl to do?

The descriptions of the safari itself were so much fun to read and, even though, it had never been on my bucket list before, I found myself wishing I could go on a trip like that (minus the murder…. I think).

I hope that some of the other characters also make appearances in future books– especially Jack. I have to admit, he was one of my favorites of the secondary characters.

I’m looking forward to seeing what other adventures Naomi and Charlotte get into.  Well done, Ms. Kennedy.

“Many people wear masks. Some to hide their feelings; some to conceal their identity; and some to hide that most hideous plague of mankind: a sickness in the soul.”

An era on the cusp of revolution in America and France; a land where outward wealth and display hide simmering political and social tensions; a country which had faced intermittent war for the past fifty years and would need to survive a series of world-wide conflicts in the fifty years ahead.

Faced with no less than three murders, occurring from the aristocracy to the seeming senseless professional assassination of a homeless vagrant, Ashmole Foxe must call on all his skill and intelligence to uncover the sickness which appears to be infecting his city’s very soul.

Can Foxe uncover the truth which lies behind a series of baffling deaths, from an aristocrat attending a ball to a vagrant murdered where he slept in a filthy back-alley?

Given that I am a not-so-closeted Anglophile and history lover, I’m always on the lookout for Bristish historical mysteries. And, I’m glad I found this one, even if I am coming late to the party, being this is the sixth book in the series. Have not fear, though, it can easily be read as a standalone, though I do have to admit I have already bought the earlier five books just so I can see more of Ashmole.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The mysteries involved were top-notch, the characters — ditto. I did not want to put this book down once I started it. I’ve not read a lot of books set in Norfolk, so I was very glad to get a glimpse of another English city.

Foxe seems like the kind of man it would be a lot of fun to have as a friend, as long as you realize he is what he is. He’s just thirty (which leads me to my only complaint…if the man on the front cover is supposed to be Ashmole, he’s sorely miscast….perhaps he’s one of the murder victims instead) and has a distinct joie de vivre which I imagine would be irresistible. And, it sounds like it is… especially for the ladies. He’s the type of man that has to be taken how he is (and not very seriously). I especially enjoyed the dilemma the author left him in at the end of the book, and it will be interesting to see how he gets out of it (this is not by any means a cliff-hanger; the mysteries are solved.)

I’m hoping I will soon have time to sit down and Ashmore again and catch up on what he’s done before this volume. Highly recommended!

Danny St. John was stuck in a dark place of guilt and regret after a personal tragedy. On the run from violent criminals, he is forced to spend time with the one woman who makes him feel too much. Victoria Lopez needs to protect her heart, but she also misses the guy Danny used to be and thinks she might be able to bring him back. The suspense is high in in Under the Radar.

Dee J. Adams does a good job keeping the reader turning pages in her latest romantic suspense novel. It’s a decent premise: witnesses to a crime having to hide before the trial to stay alive. These four, though, don’t use the Marshalls…they take off on their own. Gathering supplies, including common sense items like wet wipes (a nice touch of reality) they head into the woods… four folks with only one thought: stay alive. Romance was the farthest thing from their minds.

Of course, things begin to change between them. They see each other in a light they hadn’t before. Desperate situations can bring out strengths and traits that would never have been shown under regular circumstances. I was both glad to see the two couples grow together, and a bit frustrated by having them share page time. I appreciate why the author chose to do what she did, but because each couple didn’t get a full story to themselves, it did keep me from being fully invested in either of them. Also, it’s always tough to balance the “run for your life” type suspense with a growing romance.

The suspense, though, was top notch and I have no quibbles there. I haven’t read anything by the author before, and I know this is part of a series. I could sense that fact in a few tidbits, but honestly the books stands well on its own. I’m sure that followers of the series might catch little innuendos and facts that I may have missed, but my enjoyment wasn’t marred by this fact.

Looking for a romantic suspense that’s heavy on well-written suspense? Give this one a try. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

Calamity plagues Aggie’s debut dance performance at the Arneson River Theater, the celebration skewed by carousing, crazies, and corpses. Even in idyllic River City, crime complicates relationships.

Case in point: when a woman is murdered in the hotel you’re staying in, your boyfriend tends to get really busy really quickly. Not that Aggie is about to let that stop her fun.

Aggie Mundeen is an advice columnist who takes her real life experiences and uses them to guide others. I was amused that the letters from her readers were included in the story, giving us a little insight into Aggie’s downtime rituals. Her boyfriend, Sam Vanderhoven, is also an interesting character. Although he’s a rather typical cop-like character, his frustration and affection for Aggie make him a more complete character. That he knows he wants to keep her safe and yet realizes at the same time that he’ll never get her to heel, is both sweet and reassuring.

I really enjoyed the setting in San Antonio, Texas. It’s a city I hear so many good things about and yet have never visited, despite having lived in Houston for a year. The characters are also very interesting and likable, despite Aggie’s penchant for getting herself into trouble, even though her boyfriend and cop, Sam, warn her to stay out of it. That said, if every lead in a cozy mystery took that advice, we’d never have any novels, right? At times I felt like the dialogue was a bit stilted and awkward, but the overall story was entertaining and engaging. I’m going to hunt down the prior three books in this series now and find out how it all began. A story with a few twists and turns and an unforgettable cast.

This is the seventh book in the Arcana Archaeology Adventure series and I regret I’ve not read the other books in the series. Not because this book cannot stand on its own, but because this is a darn good read and I hate that I’ve missed out on six books of this kind of writing!

The Sage Stone Prophecy is exciting, the characters are well-drawn and three dimensional, and the writing is tight—it was so exciting that I finished the book in only two nights (it was good enough that, had I had the time to read during the day to my heart’s content, I could have finished it in one day).

I don’t want to give away any spoilers—and I do plan on going back and buying the first six books in the series then rereading this again—because there are so many things going on. It reminds me a great deal of the books by Dan Brown – you not only have an exciting treasure hunt with clues that need to deciphered along the way, you will learn a lot about matriarchal societies and the role of the goddess in those.

Great job, Ms. Wikarski. I’m only sorry I was so late discovering you and this series.

It’s a good thing we have enlisted the assistance of this notorious, Victorian-era London detective to assist us in this baffling murder mystery adventure, for I fear there is more to this tale than meets the eye!”

What fun! This steampunk mystery is told very much (and unapologetically) tongue-in-cheek. It is obvious that it’s not the first volume of the series, but can be easily read on its own.

Ichabod Temperance and his companion Persephone Plumtartt arrive in England and are instantly plunged into a rousing adventure and well as making the acquaintance of a certain detective whose last name is Holmes and who has a brother high-placed in British circles. The brother wishes his younger sibling would settle down and do something with his intellect.

The story is told from many different POVs which is surprisingly not as confusing as I would have thought. Each POV character has very much his/her own voice so it was instantly evident who was doing the talking.

And, the laughs! My poor husband was trying to read his own book but kept being interrupted. “Let me read you this part!”

I adore Temperance and Plumtartt, however I would be amiss if I did not mention the supporting characters and how much they added to the story. My very favorites had to be the BarbaraHaughnne brothers, Yababadabadoiah and Scubidubeduiah. As you can see, there are many cultural in-jokes that will not detract from your enjoyment of the book if you don’t get them, but add another level of pleasure when you do—so much so I now want to reread the book just to find them!

I am so going to go back and buy the rest of the books in the series—starting with book one. Mr. Ichabod Temperance, you have found a new fan!

She finds herself at the heart of two overlapping love triangles as she scrambles to escape her employer’s grip. Before she leaves the city, Irina realizes she has merely scratched the surface of a frightening conspiracy on a global scale.

I thoroughly enjoyed In Irina’s Cards, the first book in the Variant Conspiracy series, in which we are introduced to Irina and find out, along with her, that her life may not be exactly as she thinks it is. She begins having strange visions after purchasing a deck of old Tarot cards and – out of character for her (she’s not exactly the adventuresome type)—packs up her backpack and sets off to discover the meaning of them.

The story is told from Irina’s POV so the reader can take the journey along with her and discover as well the mystery behind Innoviro. We bond with other variants on the journey and enjoy the feeling of being part of a larger group.

I really like the character of Irina—once she gets out and gets on her own (even if the way is paved for her by Innoviro) she really begins to come into her own. We get to see her grow up a bit.

The story is well-written (there was one minor issue at the beginning that took me out of the story a little where a key became a key card, but that was the only bobble I can remember). I was sucked into the story and stayed up way too late reading it because I had to know what happened next.

Because this is the first in the series, do not expect a clear cut ending—there is a bit of a cliffhanger that leads you into book two—which I will be starting this weekend! The third book in the series is being released soon and I want to make sure I’m caught up!

Garda Detective Tadhg Sullivan leads a special unit that investigates politically motivated crime. A man known only as The Deerstalker is a cancer who has infected the Irish political system.

Sullivan teams up with journalist Helen Carty, and together they try tracking down the mysterious killer. Carty adds to Sullivan’s problems, when he finds himself falling in love with her. And further complicating things, he starts losing trust in his partner, Detective Pat Carter, who appears to be on the side of the Garda Commissioner, who Sullivan is rapidly falling out with.

Sullivan’s case is further thrown into confusion when a copycat killer, Tommy Walsh, is shot dead by the CIA. When the CIA discovers that they’ve killed the wrong person, the two agents involved–Simon, who has become disillusioned by his time stationed in the Middle East, and Joey, a psychopath who confuses zealotry with patriotism–are also in pursuit of The Deerstalker.

Sullivan finds himself in a race against time, if he is to arrest The Deerstalker before the CIA take him out, and use his death as a pawn in a political game of chess. Who will win out in the end?

The Gun is the first book in the Tadhg Sullivan series and introduces us to Tadhg Sullivan, the head of a special task force within the Irish Police. I was very interested in reading this book, because… let’s face it… Ireland holds a special place in my heart…and I was not disappointed.

Because this is the first of the series, there was of necessity some setting up so we get to know Tadhg and his personality (he’s facing burn-out in his job and he drinks way more than is good for him). However, this case comes along and really revitalizes him—and the developing romance with journalist Helen Carty doesn’t hurt either. Of course, it has to be kept quiet, because not only are they romancing, they are also working together to help solve the crime.

It’s not a mystery, as such. The reader knows from the very beginning who the culprit is, and I love getting to know (and understand) his motivation. The suspense for this story comes from wondering if Tadhg is going to be able to discover who he is before he kills more people.

I love these characters; they are well-drawn and multi-dimensional)– as I was reading it, I felt like I was watching a BBC series or Masterpiece theater! (producers, are you listening?) I could see the action playing out on the TV screen of my mind– set against the backdrop of Ireland (and being able to visit several different cities as The Deerstalker seeks his revenge is a nice extra!)

I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series! Good job, Mr. Kavanagh!

As she travels the shining island, the product of her surgery reveals much more than she may be able to handle—neither the land of crystals nor the world from which she arrived are exactly what they seem.

Terrors Great and Small – A couple barricades themselves in their home to escape a viral outbreak carried by mosquito bites. As the days of panic and solitude stack up, they battle with both their own crumbling sanity and the terror of what really awaits them beyond their front door.

This is an intriguing collection of short stories from four different categories—a wonderful mix of genres and styles. I enjoyed every story—and many of them left me wanting to read more about the characters and the worlds they are set in, so I’ll be checking out several of the authors to see what else they have available.

I love short stories because they are easy to read right before bed without investing the time a novel takes, but I have to admit that I ended up not reading just one story a night. The stories were so good that I didn’t want to stop reading!

It’s very hard to pick a favorite because the stories are all so different—and I could easily see many of them being my “favorite” depending on the mood I was in and what I was wanting to read. That said, some of my favorites are below.

“Heroes” by Ranger Reid. I would love to find out the circus freaks and where they all are now.

“Wake” by Anthony Morgan-Clark. This reads so much like a Twilight Zone show… gave me the shivers and I hope I never have to have surgery.

“Wrong Turns” by John Lanmaack. What a wonderful twist on a time travel story… love and redemption.

I’m looking forward to the next installment of short stories!
