The trouble with riding off into the sunset is that it very quickly goes dark.

In this, the second and final part of ‘The Written World’, Myrah and her only-sometimes-intrepid friends discover that averting wars, surviving demonic encounters and evading the clutches of determinedly genocidal relatives is no guarantee of a simpler, easier life.

In pursuit are a rebel army, a great war fleet and a rival horde of murderous wizards. All in all, then, the future looks unlikely to be dull. There will be fire, there will brimstone and there will be occasional bouts of seasickness.

Nevertheless, if Myrah, Nev and the mighty Alaethar are ever to uncover the truth about their worryingly obscured histories, then they must press on and find their way to the remote and suitably mysterious Diegesis Gate. But seeking the truth can be a dangerous business; in a world of fantasy, there is only one Ultimate Truth and discovering it can spell the end of everything.

If you love books that are exciting, funny, and make you think, then this is the book for you. Myrah, Nev, and Alaethar try to uncover the truth about their various histories, which requires them to find the Diegesis Gate. But in the end, discovering the truth might lead to the end of their world. Still, Myrah wants to know and in a discussion with her friends about their mysterious past histories, she says, “But what if it went further than that? Not just this history but every history? What if none of it was real?” Nev, the augur, answers, “Oh, well then there are only thoughts,” put in Nev, who clearly felt as though he was on home territory with this one. “That’s all you can really know to be real.”

Alaethar is the mighty warrior with little bent for philosophy, so Nev always confuses him and Myrah frequently does as well. But they are his friends and he learns to trust them even when what they’re saying makes no sense to him at all.

And so the three friends journey onwards, finding notes and clues from their past histories, meeting lady pirates and murderous barbarians. Obstacle after obstacles come their way, but they keep going, certain that eventually they will find the ultimate truth.

The Endless Land is the sequel to Unreliable Histories, and while it can be read as a stand-alone, I personally think it is better to start with the first book. After all, who would want to miss a moment of this series. Many questions will be answered and many more left unanswered. If you have ever wondered what happened to your favorite characters after the book is finished, well, then, you’ll definitely want to join Myrah, Nev, and Alaethar as they work to discover the answer to that very question.

Fantasy lovers who enjoy philosophical mind games as well as great characters with many adventures and a healthy dash of humor are sure to fine The Endless Land to be completely delightful.

This winter, ex-skiing champion, reformed heartbreaker and single dad Tyler O’Neil has only one mission—making sure his daughter, Jess, has the best Christmas ever. The fact that his best friend, Brenna, is also temporarily moving into his chalet at the overbooked Snow Crystal resort is a delicious distraction he’s simply going to have to ignore. Theirs is the one relationship he’s never ruined, and he’s not about to start now.

Ski pro Brenna Daniels knows all about the perils of unrequited love—she’s been in love with Tyler for years. But living with him is absolute torture…how can she concentrate on being his friend when he’s sleeping in the room next door? Then when Tyler kisses Brenna, suddenly the relationship she’s always dreamed of feels so close she could almost touch it. Could this be the Christmas her dreams of a happy-ever-after finally come true?

Maybe This Christmas is a holiday themed romance that reads like a warm hug, filled with love and devotion. It took a while for the hero to understand that the best holiday gift has been with him his whole life. This story follows Tyler as he discovers the courage to open his ‘present’ and his heart.

I’ve now read all three books and I have to say that Sleigh Bells in the Snow and Maybe This Christmas are the ones that should be made into Hallmark movies. All the elements are there to make readers feel like they are part of the family because their emotions are engaged completely by the time they finish reading the first chapter of either book. Ms. Morgan seems to know our secret desires of what a Christmas holiday romance should encompass and she delivers it flawlessly.

Truly, I put on holiday music as I wrote this review. I was inspired. The story creates a sense of joy and magic about snow storms, evergreens laden down with snow and the crisp mountain air of Vermont. The scenes about skiing, snowmobiling and trudging through the white drifts were well described and made me feel like I was there. It even almost made me look forward to winter again – almost.

Tyler was an interesting character. He was a man driven to excel, to succeed and to push himself to the limit in the skill of competitive skiing. In a few seconds, an accident on a ski run took it all away. This book explores the journey of the hero coming to terms with his new reality and Tyler isn’t taking it too well. Enter a pivotal secondary character – his daughter, Jess. Their relationship provided many moments of reflection, emotion, hilarity, tender words and love between father and daughter. It was heart warming, rocky, quirky and a work in progress. I enjoyed the scenes of them together.

The thing Tyler and Jess both agree on is how wonderful Brenna Daniels is, for obviously different reasons. Thing is, Brenna has loved Tyler all her life but he’s absolutely clueless. I liked how the heroine was depicted. She tried to live her life the best she could, resigning herself to unrequited love. Not only does she have to struggle to act like she doesn’t care but she has a strained relationship with her parents. When Ms. Morgan was ready to share it, imagine my surprise as to the reason. It was rather shocking. Not only did it make things so much clearer, it had its own happy ever after finale and I was very touched.

Even though most of the conflict is internal there is one external conflict that has been bubbling under the surface for a while. This is where Ms. Morgan shines – she takes a subject that has deep and possibly tragic lifetime repercussions and explores how a person can heal and rise above the pain. I speak of being bullied in school. The author handled the conflict with care and the scenes that dealt with it were examples of powerful writing. I couldn’t help but be emotionally engaged in the telling and the author showed just how heart wrenching it can be but also provided readers with a twist. The heroine realizes a shocking truth and it stunned me. Ms. Morgan, through her heroine, shows how empowering being able to forgive can be. I respected the heck out of Brenna at that moment.

No spicy romance would be complete without the hero and heroine finally succumbing to their built up passions. It doesn’t get any more romantic that this. Ms. Morgan certainly satisfies a reader on that score. Of course, Tyler initially bumbled it. That made great conflict because at that point he was still trying to reconcile the possibilities with his fears. Eventually, after an ultimatum that shocked him to his toes, Tyler does what he does best – focuses and lets nothing stop him from succeeding. The resulting scene practically melted my heart. This series ends with the ultimate in romantic settings and dialogue and scenes that made me say, “Awwww!”

Maybe This Christmas is filled with warmth, joy and love. This novel is filled with lessons learned, yearnings fulfilled and adorable dogs frolicking among its pages. It’s a story I’m adding to my keeper shelf to reread when I need a boost of “feel good’ to brighten my day. It’s that kind of book and worth recommending to romance readers everywhere. Get your smile on and read Maybe This Christmas.

When fifteen year-old Hawke feels fed up with not being able to walk, he escapes in his mind to a misty island filled with moorlands, ancient forests, and monolithic stones: a place where he can move and run and accomplish heroic quests.

His life is turned upside down, though, when he’s thrust into this dream world and finds it real! He becomes ‘Star Catcher.’ The job? Track and collect shooting stars or meteors sent from a more advanced civilization, which have powers that protect the island from approaching evil. He finds many helpers along the way: a serving girl who can communicate with animals and create light, an alluring mermaid, a savvy one-eyed crow, and an old farmer with a secret.

Hawke must also discover what’s going on inside the imposing mansion called Moon House. Why do rooms change? Why do objects mysteriously shift? Who lives inside the old forest behind the place—and why is the Star Catcher forbidden to enter it? And most importantly, who are Hawke and his stars really battling against? An evil genius? A pirate-like group called the Shrikers who have taken over the island? An Ancient Magic? Or, maybe an aspect of himself?

Hawke’s life sucks – his legs are paralyzed, he’s confined to his bed, his father has left, his mother is unhappy and trying to find solace. Hawke escapes the real world and dives into a world of dreams where he becomes the star catcher. He has to catch five stars as they fall from the sky – one every other day – and when he has caught the last star the magic will return to the strange land.

The world of Hawke’s dreams is very well thought out and each trip to find a star is like a different jewel in a necklace. Similar but each an individual in its own right. Hawke is typical of a young teenage boy but Emma, the girl servant at the Moon House, has several different facets to her character. Evil is easy to recognize as it comes in the guise of the Shrikers and Facsimiles but working out who the good guys are takes a little more time.

This story has a smattering of various animals, humans and mythical creatures. They confuse, assist or act against Hawke and as the reader I never knew which way each character would go.

I found this book to be very attention grabbing. At first it dragged a little but once Hawke started his travels in the other world I had to keep reading to see what happened next. While not the usual mystery and adventure, this fantasy certainly has a hint of magic, mystery and adventure. All make this a worthwhile read.

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she’s a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she’s a disgrace; to design mavens, she’s a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette’s intensifying allergy to Seattle—and people in general—has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence—creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter’s role in an absurd world.

I picked up a copy of Where’d You Go, Bernadette at the urging of my book club. They all raved about this novel, so I figured it must be something I needed to read. I’m glad I got the chance to delve into Bernadette’s world. She’s definitely an interesting character. If there was ever a case-study in eccentricity, then she should be near the top of the list. She’s very complex and took a while to understand. I’ll get back to her in a moment.

I have to admit, by looking at the cover and listening to the feedback from friends, I thought this would be a breezy beach-type read. It’s not. The style of writing takes the form of letters and emails and is told through the perspective of Bernadette’s daughter. At times, it’s confusing and at other times, well, I wanted to pitch the book across the room.

Why? For being so smart and eccentric, Bernadette is a mess. I rather liked her, though. She’s been through some read crud in her life and she deals with in her own way. I could empathize with her frustrations with the world. She claims to be agoraphobic to the point of needing a personal assistant she doesn’t have to see in order to get through her day. In reality, she just doesn’t like people. She’s been frustrated so much in her life that she’s shut down. Haven’t we all had moments where we want to throw our hands in the air in defeat? As much as I liked her messiness and her issues, I got a tad tired of them.

Then there is the husband. He’s a piece of work. He’s ridiculously smart and compartmentalizes…everything. I liked that he had some issues–like not seeing Bernadette’s issues much earlier on–but again, I tired of him being so self-centered. He’s got a woman on the side, which I didn’t appreciate. If cheaters in the book aren’t well liked, then this might be a book to take a pass on. But more than that, when the husband does realize there’s an issue, he goes overboard.

I guess that’s my biggest issue with this book. Yes, it’s a satire, but it’s so far overboard that sometimes I couldn’t suspend my disbelief enough to keep reading. I walked away from this book quite a few times before I actually finished it. I only finished it because I had to know what the ultimate outcome was–which I thought came rather abruptly and with little closure.

This might not have been the right book for me, but if you’re interested in a book that takes place vividly in Seattle and want to read about characters that are a little off the mark, then this might be the novel for you.

But when Isobel’s dramatic death scene is upstaged by a real murder and Delphi is left holding the still-smoking gun, Isobel drops the role of victim and assumes the role of detective. With the help of her precocious brother Percival and her reluctant temp agent James Cooke, Isobel peels back layers of deception to reveal a shocking abuse of power—and no shortage of suspects eager to deliver justice to a man who denied it to so many.

Isobel Spice wants to be a full-time actress and in the meantime between various acting gigs, she works as a temporary assistant to a lawyer. She has an insatiable curiosity which knows no bounds, frequently landing her in trouble. She becomes embroiled in her current case while she is performing in an interactive dinner theater. Isobel is supposed to be the victim, dying with melodramatic intensity, complete with fake blood and a foaming mouth, only to be upstaged by a real murder.

The action is fast-paced and there are a plethora of suspects. It seems that everyone wanted to kill the judge, who abused his power especially in the sentencing of juveniles for various offenses. “Some of them can’t even be described with straight faces as offenses. Like the seventh grader who wrote on her desk at school with a Sharpie.” So it is no wonder that he came to a bad end, but who was the actual murderer? The plot has a number of twists and turns, and I was on the edge of my seat right to the end. The final scene, while not entirely believable, was very dramatic and eminently satisfying.

Great attention has been paid to the details within the story. I learned a lot about the acting profession, the legal profession, and juvenile detention. Isobel is a complex character with a variety of friends. She can’t make up her mind about her feelings at times, and she does things without thinking, with the single-minded purpose of solving the crime, without worrying about the propriety of her actions. She comes across as a very real person.

The supporting characters are also well-crafted and ring true. I especially liked her friend, Delphi Kramer, and her brother, Percival, a precocious computer whiz.

Mystery lovers are sure to enjoy helping Isobel solve this crime. Murder is murder, no matter how deserving the victim may be.

At first I wasn’t quite sure what I thought of Ryan. His emotional response to a family tragedy early on in the plot wasn’t at all what I would have expected from anyone who had just experienced such a terrible event. He was clearly incredibly smart and thoughtful, but it wasn’t until the author explained the reasons behind his reluctance to express his feelings that I really came to like this character. Every question I had about him in the beginning was answered in full, and I enjoyed watching his development over the course of this novel.

It would have been helpful to have more detailed introductions of the secondary characters. The actual number of them was just right for something this length, but so little time was spent explaining how everyone was connected to Ryan that it took me a while to put all of the pieces together. It was most confusing when I was trying to figure out who was and was not related to him.

The romantic subplot caught me by surprise due to how quickly it happened. The chemistry between the characters involved in it was strong, though, and seeing how both of them reacted to falling in love added depth to their personalities that would not have otherwise been there. It ended up working quite well with everything else that was going on in this tale.

I would have also liked to see more differentiation between the voices of the various characters. Everyone tended to use the same patterns of speech no matter who they were or what circumstances they found themselves in. The dialogue itself was often poetic. It was especially well suited to Ryan’s personality when he was describing his surroundings or remembering something, but the formality of it was out of place during the most exciting scenes.

Some philosophical questions are much easier to answer than are others. Ryan’s startling self-awareness for someone his age lead to a much deeper analysis of the meaning of life than I was expecting when I started the first chapter. It was especially interesting to see what Ryan had to say about social justice and the tension between the needs of individuals versus the needs of their communities.

Chicken River Dance is the kind of story that I’d recommend to teens and adult readers alike.

And when everything changes and the world around her becomes as frightening as any fairy tale, Krysta finds her imagination holds powers beyond what she could have ever guessed. . . .

Gretel and the Dark is a strange mixture of genres. Historical, fantastical and sometimes sadly romantic, it keeps the reader yearning for more details of its protagonist’s life, right up until the end. There are three distinct time periods which make up the narrative of the book. One is in the past, one the assumed present and one becomes the new, later, present towards the end of the book. It becomes apparent as the pages go by that these narratives are intertwined. Fairytale links help to support this, as well as the similarities in characters.

The protagonist in this book does not have an easy ride and this is not a traditional romance by any means. There are some romantic elements but these are often sad, seemingly impossible, or darkly one-sided. The main character faces paedophilia and cases where men much older are keen to be intimate with her. However, these implications are subtly done and not too graphic to read. They are along the lines of saying the man placed his hand on her bum and forgot to remove it or that he touched under her skirt where the woman said no man should. These instances are by no means present throughout the whole book but it is a recurring theme in light of the historical time period the main character experienced.

The novel covers the time period of Hitler, pre-Hitler and post genocide. The protagonist and her love interest are the main sweet romantic thread. They make it through horrific scenarios together and come out stronger but this is not a tale which ends in marriage and kids. The ending reminded me of the bitter-sweet movie PS I love you; even though it didn’t end in death, it made me tear up. This is not a feel-good novel.

The fantastical elements consist of the protagonist’s imaginings and fairytales or old wive’s tales remembered from her youth and threaded into the narrative. In one case this was used repetitively to imply the rape of the protagonist as a child by older men to avoid any graphic descriptions. However, this is also used to show the child’s shaky grip on reality and their need to escape it for a better world, where she can make a difference to the outcome of her life. The fairytales may be dark but they hold the determination of a strong woman, prepared to battle the monster behind her misfortunes.

I gave this book 4.5 stars because, despite all the strong thematical links and historical references, the beginning of the book was too full on. Too many fantastical references were thrown at the reader at once. I would have preferred a slower opening. I also found that I did not pick up on the historical links until much later in the book. Someone thinking along more historical lines would have made the connection a lot earlier but because nothing like this was mentioned in the prologue, I assumed this was merely a dark tale based upon a fairytale, with no real life, historical links.

However, I believe a reader will feel the emotional pulls of history through this book, following in the footsteps of a character full of hope, obstinance and determination to survive and have her own way. She can be too stroppy, as most children can, but she makes it through terrible times off her own back and, through her, I had a peep hole into history I could never have experienced first hand.

When life’s challenges arise what are your… True Colors?

If you have followed the series you have seen Melody Wilkins, Imani Jordan and Lance Dunn grow from their college years to working adults. We last left the trio in The Color of Love with Lance married to Heather and Imani walking down the isle to marry Marco.

Imani’s sixth sense is very active in this book. Those that know her, such as Melody, know she sees premonitions so this is nothing new, but when her vision is of someone she loves dearly it could turn her world upside down. Will this tragedy strengthen their bond of friendship or open up secrets that have been buried back in college?

I thought I enjoyed book two in this series until I started reading this one. The author started this book with a twist that sets the tone for the rest of the novel. The prior books the author gave a good finale but she did the opposite and started with a bang that had my heart racing as I read along. Reading along and then realized the words no, no, no were repeatedly coming from me. Oh the emotions that this book put me through; I didn’t know if I was suppose to be happy or sad. Either way love was going to find it’s way among the characters.

Lance is divorced from Heather, and I am happy to say he didn’t revert back to his college days of frequent sleep-around-miles. Before Imani’s wedding in book two he confessed his love for her not only verbally but it also showed in his actions. I am starting to like Lance in this book.

I can’t say the same for Melody. She still works my nerves and the accusations she speak in this installment are serious and can be damaging to her marriage and others.

Again, I am happy that I picked this series to read. The author’s writing and talent for story telling really shows in this novel. This was not a simple or boring plot. Once again she incorporates many twist and even a little extrasensory sensation with Imani’s sixth sense and a ghost appearance.

The trio is growing as they marry and have children. I didn’t like the idea of Trevor and his wife Erycah having so many children back to back at such a young age.

I enjoyed seeing these three characters grow and hope the author would consider continuing their story.

A highly recommended read where you grow to know the characters as their friendship has upheld strong bonds, as they endure lost and as they continue on into marriage and parenthood.

They barely have time to get to know each other before they are facing some life and relationship changing events that any couple, let alone a new couple, would find challenging. I would have liked to watch them spend more time together just being a normal couple before things became so serious.

Ms. Burke did a wonderful job describing the beautiful world she created. Jasmyn Lake sounds absolutely gorgeous. I also enjoyed the concept of enchanters and the way that Ms. Burket described their colorful auras. As I read, I could really see Jane’s purple aura floating around her. I do wish that more detail had been given concerning the history of the enchanters and the various families. Ms. Burke provides enough history to keep things from getting confusing, but I was left wanting more.

There is an epic battle toward the end of the book between Jane and her friends and a pack of unknown enchanters. However, there is very little explanation as to why Jane is being attacked in the first place. Even Jane didn’t seem to have any clear idea of why she was targeted. The scene was jam packed with suspense that had me on the edge of my seat, but without a clear explanation for why it was happening, it didn’t make much sense to me. I can only hope that more information is provided in the next book of the series.

Despite this issue, I enjoyed reading Violet Midnight. Jane is certainly an entertaining character and the world she inhabits is simply stunning. Fans of love at first sight romance should give this tale a try.

It all began with a small group of people who were trapped in Bass Foster’s twentieth-century American home during a terrible storm. Somehow, they were carried back through time and space to an alternate seventeenth-century England, a realm at war and ruled by the legendary King Arthur Tudor III. Bass, Krystal, and the rest had either adapted to their strange new home–or died in the attempt.

And now, Bass, a Duke of the Realm, and one of the king’s most valued commanders, has been given a seemingly impossible mission: to unite the warring kingdoms of Ireland under Arthur’s own loyal ally King Brian.

But in Ireland waited both treacherous friends and bloodthirsty enemies. And mobilizing for actions as well aware the well-trained forces of the Holy Roman Empire and a foe who could destroy them all–the mysterious lords of the Time Projector!

First of all, anyone wanting to enjoy this book must read the first two books in the series. Mr. Adams does provide some information about key events from the previous tales, but certainly not enough to allow this book to stand alone.

Bass has certainly come a long way since he was first transported into the past of a parallel Earth. He becomes more and more important all the time, but still finds himself utterly under the control of King Arthur III. I can’t believe how much luck Bass has. Everything he attempts is a huge success. Even situations that seem bad end up working out unbelievably well for Bass. I won’t spill the details, but a particularly sticky situation in Ireland could have proven very costly for Bass. Instead, it ends up winning him even more respect and yet another powerful ally.

I must say that I am very displeased with the way Bass’ relationship with Krystal has gone. Their relationship has never been easy, but I thought they would find happiness together. In The Seven Magical Jewels of Ireland, Bass and Krystal were having some serious problems. I had high hopes that they were work things out, but at this point, I think their relationship might have deteriorated behind all repair.

I truly feel sorry for Krystal. When she first arrived in this strange time, she tried to be more useful. However, she was repeatedly told that she needed to be content to act like a lady of her station for the time period. When Krystal’s behavior became unexplainably erratic, suddenly Bass and others were suggesting that she do something useful. I can certainly understand Krystal’s loneliness and frustration. As if that weren’t enough, the one thing in life that she cares about is taken away from her. While I understand that Bass doesn’t have a lot of options to try and help Krystal, he doesn’t do anything at all even though he is a modern man with more understanding of mental health then the people of this past, parallel Earth. Bass shows more care and devotion to strangers than his own wife and son. I wonder if Bass will even recognize his son the next time he sees him.

I am pleased to note that Mr. Adams provides a bit more insight into the wielders of the advanced time projectors. No names have been provided, but it seems that at least one is hidden among Bass’ men. I have a feeling that there is some grand scheme at work that has yet to be revealed. Some of the people using time projectors generally stay out of the way of the people of the current time. However, they allude to others who have not been so careful. I can’t help but wonder how much the parallel Earth has been changed by time travelers.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Of Quests and Kings. Mr. Adams has created a detailed world filled with interesting, interconnected events. I’m looking forward to seeing where Bass’ adventures take him next.
