Investigative Technician Austin Kent never met a snarky joke he didn’t like—or a set of stairs that couldn’t trip him up. One night after a devastating episode at work, Austin sees something else he likes—the handsome detective he’s seen around the station whom he’s always wondered about. But after he makes a drunken fool of himself in front of Detective Williams, he’s sure there’s no hope.

Beau and Austin’s worlds collide when Austin is sent to pick up some evidence at the station. Amidst a myriad of twists and turns in the troubling serial killer-style murders of Vegas conventioneers, Austin and Beau discover that there’s more to the other than they’d originally thought. There might even be more they’d like to give—unless the killer has the final say.

Things are never quiet on the Las Vegas Strip. Just ask Detective Beau Williams, homicide detective for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Just as he thinks he might be able to take some time off, have a couple drinks, and relax, another body is found, leading him to believe a serial killer is on the loose. Each time a conventioneer disappears, he’s pulled deeper into the mystery, but will he ever catch the person responsible?

Detective Beau Williams has his hands full with his day job as a homicide detective for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This leaves him with little time to do anything but catch bad guys. But he sucks it up, does his job, and sneaks out for a little fun when he can. It also makes him a bit touchy and uptight as well, which I guess is understandable. Once I got past all of his walls and prickliness, I started to like him a lot. He’s patient, he’s kind, and he’s a redhead. With a beard no less. He’s very much an alpha male, which generally isn’t something I care for, but in a police officer, I think it’s more natural assertiveness and less arrogance.

Austin Kent started out as an adorable dork. He’s clumsy, he’s insecure, and that’s really endearing. The problem with Austin, however, is that he can’t move past it. The clumsiness is there for life, trust me, I know that one firsthand. But even once he knows that Beau’s into him, he can’t accept it and constantly throws up snarky responses to everything. Once he finally relaxed enough to see the truth, he did settle down, which made me very happy because he and Beau really were good together.

This third installment in the Sin City Uniforms series is probably one of my favorites to date. I really like how the author will introduce a character in a prior book before giving them their own story. It helps garner a little added interest as far as I’m concerned. You recognize the name and remember how he’d helped someone in the book before so you know you’re going in liking the main character. A steamy and sexy story coupled with an intense mystery makes for a very enjoyable read.

Angelica Amery has come to Milan for a fresh start, only to find that the bijou apartment she’d rented doesn’t exist! Taking refuge in a nearby café, she meets enigmatic but darkly handsome Dante Vettori, who comes to her rescue.

What else could Dante do? He feels responsible for Geli, and that’s before he kisses her! But soon this unconventional English girl is playing havoc with his complicated life and emotions, throwing into stark relief just how much Dante needs rescuing right back!

I really enjoy ‘love at first sight’ stories and Vettori’s Damsel in Distress is a wonderful romance on the same theme. I had fun reading this novel because there was an amazing twist complicating the hero’s angst that took me completely by surprise.

This is most definitely a character driven romance because it deals with the hurdles that come from loving your family even when they hurt you. It comes from the pain of loving the wrong person until the right person comes along and puts things in perspective.

My favorite personality trait of the heroine, Angelica a/k/a Geli, is her propensity to save any animal in distress no matter the inconvenience it might cause her. It’s really adorable and it lends itself to some wonderfully tender and funny scenes in the book.

The hero, Dante, is a typical HQ hero; rich, powerful and used to getting things done. Dante is delightfully approachable and he’s actually a very nice guy who goes along with Geli’s plans to save injured kitties. He got more than he bargained for and how he reacted made him perfect as a hero.

Included in this story is a scene that is a commonly used technique – the witnessing from afar an interaction that looks damning and potentially undermines all the progress in the romance that had been made. I’m grateful that the anguish was short lived but the real reason behind that moment was shocking. Dante is a lot more noble and honorable than anyone realized – and I hurt for him. I found the reason hard to wrap my brain around because it was so …well, it totally confounded me. How the hero accepted and embraced the situation and remained the well-adjusted guy that he is solidly impressed me.

This story is very sensual. It has a lot of attraction and some kisses and steamy almost moments but when Dante and Geli finally express the physical side of their romantic feelings, I only got to see the happy couple after the fireworks. I’m just happy they got together. I wouldn’t expect less with a passionate man like Dante.

Vettori’s Damsel in Distress is classic romance. It has two unlikely people coming together at the perfect moment in time when they were ripe for falling in love. Like anything shiny and new, there’s a learning curve and a few moments of distrust of something so powerful and fast. How can an instant attraction be the real thing? Read Vettori’s Damsel in Distress and find out. I’m glad I did.

With Crazy, Robinson, whose trademarked pacing and inventive plots have been highly praised by bestselling authors like Jonathan Maberry, Scott Sigler and James Rollins, treats readers to a wildly imaginative, frenetically paced thriller exploring the origins of fear.

The beginning of the book started with suspenseful snippets that made me want to continue reading on. The attention catching snippets that open the novel are later explained in the book. With such suspense, action and humor my attention was captured and I couldn’t wait to continue reading. I am not a true science fiction reader so I was happy to have picked a book that wasn’t too deep and serious.

The character, Crazy is introduced and along comes humor that I found amusing in the beginning of the book, but as the book progress it lost its humor and turned into that kind of serious read where you have to put your thinking cap on and pay close attention so that you won’t miss any of the unveiling of the mystery. The introduction of Crazy along with his amnesia opens the suspenseful question of what happened to him to cause him to loose his memory?

A visit to Crazy in the mental facility is just the start to the sequence of action. The author is very detailed in his description of action as it takes place in the book. With this being a science fiction that is a good trait to have. Giving descriptive details blow-by-blow in the beginning but as the book went on there was a lot of action scenes that became very tedious. Not a moment to rest from all the action. Often the story seemed to ramble and the plot seem stretched out, as to where it could have been resolved sooner. I got lost on what the main focus of the story was because so much was going on; the Dreads, the mirror world, wars, stolen memories, DNA, the book turned serious and the humor was a thing of the past.

Dr. Kelly Allenby, Crazy’s aunt by marriage, fills in some of the blanks as to how Crazy’s memory has been erased, as well as what happened to Crazy’s family and how he ended up like he is. So the author did answer all of my questions.

Crazy’s lack of fear helped him excel in the military and in being a CIA agent. I’m not sure if it’s because the book is written in first person and there was only one main character going between worlds and doing the majority of the fighting but I lost interest in reading about Joseph (Crazy) going in and out of the Mirror World. Joseph was a little too perfect. He is ex-CIA, he was strong, smart, he had no fear, he was physically indestructible and he was the only person able to take on the Dreads.

This is absolutely a talented author with an imagination that not only is able to create worlds but also has the talent to write a story where he can take his readers along in his vision. This one didn’t really win me over to where I want to start adding sci-fi literature to my reading list but I wouldn’t discourage anyone that enjoys sci-fi action thrillers. This is one I’d strongly recommend for those that enjoy a book that has suspense, and that gives the reader a story that requires them to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

He discovers that there is innocence and beauty and love still to be found. It’s real and worth fighting for. That is the journey and the reality that Eli comes to grips with during the course of this very intense and exciting novel.

Cat’s Lair is a standalone read within Ms. Feehan’s Leopard series. This story is about a man determined to catch a criminal and will do anything to get the job done. What he doesn’t count on is losing his heart along the way. Catarina is the heroine who must overcome her early conditioning of fear and terror by the man who would own her, and embrace all the freedom, love and safety found within Eli’s embrace. It’s not an easy task to get Cat to trust Eli, especially when he messes up big time in the beginning. The romance comes from his willing to do anything and everything to make it up to the heroine and then some. Eli has to open up himself to hurt and betrayal if he’s going to have any hope of reaching Cat’s heart and nurturing her love. What makes his pursuit of her difficult is his own personality – Eli is an alpha in every sense of the word – in and out of bed. That extreme alpha-ness is one of Ms. Feehan’s trademarks when she crafts her heroes. They are towers of strength and seem invincible, until the right woman comes along and the man turns to mush. That’s my favorite part.

The one aspect of Eli’s personality that readers might find rough to read about is his unabashed, unapologetic and dominating personality. He’s about as un-P.C. as a man can get. Even though no fetish paraphernalia was used, the dominant/submissive relationship was very much evident, from Eli’s commands and demands, and Cat’s acquiescence and submission. He expected her to do has he commanded because she loved him and she cared for him and yes, she submitted to his demands 100%, once he had gained her trust, because she loved him and he loved her. Quite a few times I thought Eli was way over the top and it made me grit my teeth. The hero was right though – Cat was the only woman for him because she ‘got’ him, and her nurturing personality fed a need in him that he jealously guarded and wanted to horde. He was driven to protect her at all costs, and as such, he came across as an overbearing brute. Yes, Cat eventually gave it back to him, and yes, it turns out that he was justified in pushing her as hard as he did. But after a while I got tired of Eli’s demands. It just went on too long. I guess I could only take so much ‘alpha-ness’.

Rafe, the bad guy, was a product of a bad youth. Many people have bad starts in life but manage to come out on top. Rafe, on the other hand, found it easier to go with the drives of his leopard and justified everything he chose to do on his animal. He really didn’t know how to be anything other than what he was, which was sad. That’s as far as I go for empathy for the villain. He was vicious, cruel, and had no concept of mercy. Cat’s opinion of him smacked more of Stockholm Syndrome than anything else, and I’m glad she eventually came to her senses.

As for the physical side of things, wow, did that cover a lot of pages. If Ms. Feehan’s fans are looking for hot and heavy action between the sheets, kitchen or wherever, they’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the passion and sex because it’s sprinkled liberally throughout the novel and the details are as descriptive and well written as anyone could wish. Again, I think I OD’d on the love scenes. I like some of the loving action because I could see the bond being forged between Eli and Cat, however, I can only read so many of them before my eyes glaze over. They’re all well done and sexy, don’t get me wrong, I just have a limit and by the end of the book I was saturated.

I liked Cat’s Lair because it delivered what I’ve come to expect from a romance by Ms. Feehan. The plots are always meaty, with a darkness and seriousness that grips a reader while exploring a romance that is satisfying and sexy. There’s always an over the top villain to overcome and the action that accompanies that usually has me biting my nails; Cat’s Lair was no exception. Whether you’re a fan or a reader who likes shifter romances with suspense and drama, this is one good read not to miss.

A novel both heartbreaking and hopeful, about love and family, and the major and minor ways we lose people in our lives—from an acclaimed talent.

Julian’s fall begins the moment he sets eyes on Julia, flying a hawk high on a ridge. Julian is an English student, heading toward academia; Julia is married and eight years his senior. And yet, ignoring warnings from family and friends, they each give up all they have to be together. Their new life in London offers immense happiness, especially after their daughter, Mira, is born.

Only when Mira becomes dangerously ill does it become impossible for Julia to conceal the explosive secret that she has been keeping.

In this first introduction to American readers, the acclaimed Polly Samson explores how the yearning for the past can affect joy in the present and the future. The Kindness is a haunting story of love, grief, betrayal, and reconciliation—masterfully plotted and exquisitely rendered.

I’d never read anything by this author before but glad that I chose to review this book. It’s told in current tense, third person with carefully placed flashbacks. The first part of the book focuses on Julian, one of the main characters. The story is told through his eyes. That story is how he met Julia, and fell in love with her. It’s about their life with daughter Mira and Mira’s illness. It also covers his past relationship with Kate, an old school friend. It’s beautifully told and while I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment of the book I can say that all is not what it seems.

The last half of the book is told from Julia’s point of view. It’s sort of her take on the story that’s unfolded during the first part of the book. While it’s not a case of there’s two sides to every story, Ms. Samson did a wonderful job winning you over to both these character’s sides. I felt like they were both flawed in some way and that together they healed one another.

As all good books should, The Kindness is an emotional read. It has lots of twists and turns, especially in the second half. It tugs your heartstrings continually the more you learn about these characters and the truth behind their story. In a way it’s almost upsetting realizing they can’t all have a happy ending.

I’ll definitely be looking for more books by this author. And if you enjoy women’s fiction packed with emotion and told in an original way, I’d recommend putting this one on your to read list.

Mason Meadowlark is happy with his wild cowboy ways, avoiding love since the death of his baby and the end of his marriage twenty years ago. When Phoebe shows up, he fights to control his emotions, but soon wonders if she just might be worth the risk of opening his heart again.

With an obsessed fan close on her heels, Phoebe is thrown into her own murder mystery…and the next target on his list is Mason.

Phoebe had her life all plotted out until a night with Mason changed everything.

Phoebe had a completely disastrous marriage years ago. Since then, romantic commitments aren’t high on her list of priorities. Instead, she prefers to keep her relationships short and fun. However, a one night stand with Mason at her best friend’s wedding leaves an impression on her that she just can’t shake. Even though Phoebe and Mason have explosive chemistry, I have to admit I found it a little strange for Phoebe to ask to stay at Mason’s ranch for a while. While he is the brother of her best friend’s husband, they really don’t know much about each other. Furthermore, Phoebe and Mason spend most of their time tangled up in bed. Despite this issue, I really enjoyed their flirtatious banter as I hoped they would find a way to a deeper connection.

While this story is a romantic suspense, most of the drama comes from Phoebe and Mason trying to figure out their feelings for each other and what they wanted for their future. They both have been badly hurt in the past and have let their pain rule their lives ever since. While Phoebe and Mason’s situations are very different, they have chosen to cope in very similar ways. When they finally start to open up to each other and have more meaningful conversation, I could tell they were going to be very good for each other.

I must admit that I found it very easy to figure out who was behind the murders. After that, it was just a matter of waiting for the killer to make a move that would expose his identity to Phoebe. The killer is extremely deluded, disturbed, and very frightening. The sections of the story written from his point of view definitely gave me the shivers.

Southwest of Love and Murder is a very enjoyable book. Although it is book two in a series, it can definitely stand on its own. I recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic suspense with a sexy hero and a sassy heroine.

Life in the 1980s was very different from the way people live in 2015 in some ways. I was completely fascinated by these differences because I hadn’t realized that the opinions of society in general have shifted so radically on certain topics. It’s difficult to discuss this in detail without giving away spoilers, but it was definitely a highlight of the plot for me.

Dick was such a fascinating protagonist in the first book in this series, The Butcher’s Son. It came as a surprise to me to see how little he’s changed as a person since then. He seemed to make the same choices over and over again. This wasn’t something I would have expected at all when I was first introduced to him, so it would have been really helpful to know why this was the case. Even a brief explanation of where he was in his life and why he hasn’t addressed certain issues yet would have prompted me to choose a much higher rating for this tale!

The mystery itself kept me on my toes. The clues required me to think methodically and take a few notes in order to determine what they were telling me. This is something that I specifically look for in this genre because it feels so satisfying to work alongside the main character as we both try to figure out what actually happened.

There were references to events from The Butcher’s Son and The Ninth Man that will only make sense to people who are already familiar with this series. I’m glad that I’ve read everything in order so far, although this story can be read a standalone novel.

I’d recommend The Bar Watcher to anyone who likes to be kept guessing until the very end.

Sour Grapes is set in Ancient Rome and the setting certainly enhances the story. It seems very authentic and I really felt as if I had been taken back in time to a very different world. The sights and sounds, smells and tastes, all come alive in amazing ways.

This is the twelfth novel in the Claudia Seferius series and I have read several of the earlier ones. I find them to be extremely engaging and the mysteries are complex and challenging. I thought I’d pegged the villain in Sour Grapes, believing, as Claudia did, only to be caught unawares as Claudia fights for her very life against a most worth adversary. The finale of the novel is bone-chilling in its intensity.

I think that historical mysteries, when written as well as this one is, bring the past to life and add a level of depth and interest to any mystery. Fans of this genre are sure to enjoy traveling back in time and meeting Claudia Seferius.

Also, the fact that a few of the deviants in the story got off on voyeurism while they did what they did was another reason I labeled it thus. However, this is first and foremost a mystery, and a murder mystery at that. And, this is a novel about one man on a crusade against the vilest of the vile, the most heinous and inhumane of human beings, and reading about them kept me on the edge of my seat.

The one thing that the author wanted to make crystal clear, and was abundantly successful, is making a reader believe that the method of death meted out by the Iron Eagle was warranted. Sure, Steve, the FBI guy, wanted the investigations of the crimes done by the book but, there’s a gray area that he sort of teeters on. Then there’s Jim, who actually is more open about accepting that what the Iron Eagle is doing isn’t such a bad thing, even when he duplicates the horrors done to victims onto the perpetrators themselves. It was extremely difficult to read because the author was highly graphic in his details. There is rape and torture and other extremely violent behaviors but it’s recounted in a manner to get the reader on the Eagle’s side. And, for me, it worked. Yes, I cringed a lot, and took a lot of breaks, too because some descriptions were horrendous and uncomfortable to read but that’s the point. Those creeps were under the radar, killing with seeming impunity, and until the Iron Eagle put the clues together and acted, no one was going to stop them.

What I liked were the surprises. I thought that I was going to be left with the mystery of trying to figure out who the Iron Eagle was but that was actually shared with the reader part way through. And I asked myself, why? Turns out there’s a cold case that is the whole impetus for the book. That’s the real mystery and eventually, although I wasn’t too keen on the cold and precise manner in which retribution was delivered, I ended up being very sympathetic to the Iron Eagle. I didn’t expect that.

Dialogue was dark, dangerous, powerful, gritty and incredibly effective. The characterization of both Steven and Jim were not written as touchy feely, getting to know you and your emotions type of detail, but were written as hard bitten, professional and driven. They are men who are extremely fallible with vices, profanity laden speech and yet take pride in the jobs they do. They really are the good guys, with a dark edge. But no one is as dark as the Iron Eagle. I eventually find out why and it broke my heart.

The ending was profound. As much as the author went into great gory detail with the initial few serial killers, when the final moment of reckoning came it was just a tiny teensy bit more anti-climactic than I expected. And you want to know why? Because I wanted the bad guy to suffer more, to pay harder for what was done to all the victims, and in my estimation, he wasn’t. In that I guess even I have a little bit of vigilantism in me. Imagine that.

Rise of the Iron Eagle is dark, gritty, compelling and powerful. It’s not a comfortable read but it’s potent, gripping, exciting and any other word you can think of to describe a book that makes a person read through their fingers because they alternately want to hide but can’t help but continue to read all at the same time. Believe it or not, there might even be a romance relationship coming out of this horror. Talk about unconventional. It’s not the focus but it sure made me happy that even with all this death and atrocity, love could still be found. Yet, even as one case comes to a satisfying closure, the author dangled a surprising carrot. I might need to fortify myself with cotton candy and fluff, but I definitely would read the next book in the series. Mr. Teel, Jr. has a commanding story-telling voice and Rise of the Iron Eagle is proof. Check it out and see, if you dare.

American artist Jeremy Keane refuses to return home and take over his father’s business. He’d much rather sample bevvies of beauties abroad, in search of a model for the provocative masterpiece he’s driven to paint. When he meets Lady Yvette Barlow at a London wedding, he realizes she’s perfect for his work—and determines to capture the young heiress’s defiant spirit and breathtaking sensuality on canvas.

No stranger to scandal, Yvette agrees to be Keane’s subject—in exchange for his help gaining entry to the city’s brothels he knows intimately, so she can track a missing woman and solve a family mystery. But when their practical partnership leads to lessons in the art of sinning, can they find a bold and lasting love?

Ms. Jeffries has a wonderful new series on her hands if this first story is any indication of what’s to come. Of course, this was an auto-read for me because I was fascinated with Jeremy Keane from How the Scoundrel Seduces. His character ended up being quite important in that book but in The Art of Sinning he shines as a strong leading man.

Unlike The Dukes Men series which all had villains and mysteries to overcome and solve, Ms. Jeffries’ new Sinful Suitors series seems to be focused on the trials and tribulations of men of title finding suitable matches for their female relations or wards amongst so many dissolute and unacceptable men of the ton. I was greatly amused as to how the whole plan came together and under what circumstances. Then later, to see how it accidentally took off in one scene meant that there will be a lot of interesting books coming my way. I’m very excited.

In this novel, Jeremy continues to have the reputation of a rogue, rakehell and flamboyant painter. Once a reader, through the constant ploys of the heroine, Yvette, finds out about what type of person Jeremy really is they’ll understand why I thought him a perfect leading man and worthy of the title of hero.

Jeremy has angst; an internal struggle from his past that he never fully faced. He puts on a good show and is, for the most part, a functioning human being. The only thing not working is his heart – his ability to love and trust. It takes Yvette’s persistent pursuit of the truth and her wanton, passionate ways to finally reach the wounds hidden inside the hero and her issuance of a poignant and heartfelt challenge before he allows himself to heal. This is truly a character driven romance that is effective because I cared about and was vested in both Jeremy’s and Yvette’s happiness.

The seduction scenes were hot, sensual, well written and well placed throughout the story. I enjoyed Yvette’s enthusiasm and the fact that she could drive Jeremy wild. It was very fun reading.

Many secondary characters are sprinkled throughout the story which is good because I met a lot of interesting people who will make excellent main characters in their own books. I can’t wait.

Even though there isn’t a big external conflict to move things along, Ms. Jeffries knows how to keep the pace of the story moving. Her characters are engaging, witty, funny, quirky and challenging, and the dialogue was key. I enjoyed how Yvette surprised the hero with her choices of vocabulary. I laughed many times throughout the novel.

The Art of Sinning continues to showcase the strength of Ms. Jeffries’ imagination and writing skill. I had an almost impossible time putting the book down because it was that much fun. If not for having to work for a paycheck, I would have been happiest cuddled up on the couch reading this story uninterrupted for the entire day until I reached the final, adorable and entertaining happy ever after. As it was, I read it while I ate breakfast, then supper and then stayed up late to finish it because I simply had to know Jeremy’s big secret, had to know if Yvette would get him to stop blowing in the wind, and had to know who Jeremy’s sister might end up with. It’s not who I thought so I’m all atwitter over it. The Art of Sinning is a must read for new and old fans alike. It’s a winner.

By the way, I don’t usually mention covers but this one was perfect. I blushed every time I looked at it. I think it was the look in his eyes. That was a perfect Jeremy. ::fans self::
