Inspired by a true story, The Soul Retrieval is a suspenseful tale of love, loss and healing which follows traumatized southern beauty Henrietta Clayborn as she moves between her home in a small South Carolina town and the New Mexico Native American reservation whose spontaneous healings keep drawing her physician husband back. Tortured by her awful secrets, Henrietta struggles to thrive in either locale, but it is her unlikely friendship with Joe Loco–an eccentric Native American mystic with an Elvis fetish and a gift for healing–that shows her the way to be whole again.

A story of transcendent and inspiring power that is both entertaining and enlightening, readers will be cheering for the uptight woman from South Carolina to push through her fears of the forbidden as she searches for truth and healing, faces great obstacles on the frontier of self and ultimately becomes more than she ever thought possible.

Ann W. Jarvie’s The Soul Retrieval is a novel with a touch of mystery with an additional sense of the personal journey story. Set in the 1950s, it presents an odd perspective on a people and their customs, as we see mainly through the eyes of transplanted southern gal Henrietta Clayborn.

Somehow, Joe Loco becomes a garish caricature: a Native who’s tendency to dress like Elvis blends weirdly with his mystical abilities. Henrietta’s got her own issues and much though she’d like to ignore them, she finds herself sharing with Joe. He’s got insight and he says he has medicine; ancient medicine that will work a soul retrieval.

Conversations between them achieve an odd intimacy that claims the reader’s attention. Its not a romantic intimacy; they are both married to others. However, Joe’s sense of Henrietta’s pain, and his willingness to help, creates a strange relationship between them. Even though Henrietta also finds him odd, she finds herself sharing with him. Their conversations can be flippant, or silly or even argumentative, yet, each is somehow heartfelt. As odd As Joe Loco is, we don’t doubt what he sees. And, one cannot help but feel for Henrietta. While the evil in her past might seem to be the chief trouble, her current life is by no means easy. She finds herself confronting those that might be termed ‘evil’ even in her current life.

Although Henrietta’s pain and struggles do reach the reader, some aspects of this story are difficult to believe and tend to draw one away from the story. Characters are not always true to character. However, the story is incredibly original. On one level The Soul Retrieval speaks to friendship, and on another addresses all kinds of healing. It’s very original and very worth reading.

Should Claudia stay on the same path of duty she’s always walked or risk it all—her life and the futures of all brujos—for a chance at something more?

This series keeps me glued to my chair every time I pick up the latest book just because the characters are always up against impossible odds. As the fourth book in the Alpha Girl series, Ms. Erin has solidified the core group of people that carry the overall story arc on their shoulders. Tessa is usually the main protagonist but in this story, her cousin, Claudia, is the heroine who has to find the ingredients to fight the next phase of the war against the evil witch, Luciana.

Luciana is a first class villain. She does not have any scenes in Bruja but her vile and dangerous influence is felt throughout the novel. Her machinations have resulted in a threat to Claudia’s brother and it’s a race against time to save his life. Talk about pressure! And, it’s the impetus for the heroine to swallow all her doubts and fears and embark on a journey to Peru that will change her life.

The scary thing is that she has to rely on a mysterious werewolf who doesn’t talk much. She really had to find the courage within herself to venture so far from home. It’s a huge responsibility, and, because Ms. Erin told this story in first person point of view, I was in Claudia’s head the whole time. I really felt for her. So much pain, fear, worries and eventually, here’s the good part, hope. It’s the promise of hope that gives her the will and determination to see this through.

Another story twist I liked was when she met Marcus. Talk about swoon-worthy. He was the last thing Claudia expected but based on the relationship with Tessa and Dastien that I’ve read about in the previous three books, I had a good idea what was about to happen. It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving heroine; Claudia deserved to be loved for who she was, not what she could do and what she could offer. I really had no idea to what extent her powers were, or the lengths the villains would go to get what they wanted, so, not only was the heroine shocked, so was I. There were so many narrow escapes in this novel, my eyes were dry from staring wide-eyed for too many chapters in a row. Was she ever going to catch a break? Was another person she cared for going to die? It was questions like these that guaranteed my reading this novel until the exciting conclusion. It was very exciting, dangerous and the writing captured the very essence of all that turbulent emotion.

I’d have to say that Bruja has a happy for now ending because this isn’t over. There’s a ginormous battle coming in the next book in September and everything that Claudia learned in this story is going to be applied somehow in the next. I can’t wait, I’m excited and September can’t come fast enough. This series has been a pleasure to read from the get go and Ms. Erin has yet to lose her edge. The writing is as sharp and vibrant as in the very first book. I’m such a fan. I hope other paranormal romance readers discover this series too. It’s a winner.

A hot one-night stand could lead to a once-in-a-lifetime chance at love.

Women in Hollywood, Book 3

As the producer of one of TV’s highest-rated shows, Kem Phillips has a knack for creating the perfect leading man. But love in real life? No thanks. She has no interest in repeating her mother’s mistakes.

Thank goodness the star of her newest project is discreet. No one knows about the one-night stand they indulged in at her best friend’s wedding. He’s also a gentleman who always seems to be there when she’s in a jam.
It is common in young males and cause obscurity to live greyandgrey.com cialis samples happy life. Brent McKenzie has had his share of memorable moments, but that night with Kem is as fresh and hot in his mind as if it was yesterday. He’d love to be the man who comes to her rescue in all possible ways—if she’d let him.

When an emergency call sends Kem racing home to Louisiana, she goes against her better judgment and accepts Brent’s offer to go with her. Yet as everything she thought was true about her past crumbles, is his emotional support something solid to lean on…or a crutch she dare not trust?

This is the third book in the Women of Hollywood series.  Kem Phillips, a television producer, and Brent McKenzie, an actor connect at her friend’s Charlotte’s wedding. Dancing and a night cap is only the start of this hot love affair. Brent has proven to be a man that stands with his woman, but when his past comes uncovered will Kem be an emotional support to Brent?

Secrets Uncovered is a easy quick read. As with the prior books in the series the author’s writing style is one that is easy to read and the plot is a easy one to follow. I admire the close relationship between the women in the series. They keep in touch and are always there for each other with positive feedback.

The relationship between Kem and Brent moves pretty fast. It would have been nice if they’d gotten to know each other first before jumping in the sack. This seems to be the trend with the Women of Hollywood series. No courting phase just straight to the bedroom and then a predictable happy ever after relationship.

Brent was a true man and very helpful in Kem’s time of need. He had Kem’s best interest at heart in connecting her with her father and helping her work through her issues. Brent and Aunt Edna are likable characters. Kem, I guess with her underlying issues not so much. She was quick to end her and Brent’s relationship without even giving him a chance to explain or listen to the facts.

The series may be The Women of Hollywood but the men in Hollywood are very charming and likable. Each man in the series makes this series hot.

I’ve enjoyed the series and also come to know the author does well in delivering the steamy love scenes, romance and happy endings.

One of the things I like the most about zombies is how relentless they are. Other monsters can be outrun or outsmarted, but there’s almost nothing in the world that can stop these creatures. Mr. West’s version of them was particularly creepy because of how much time he took to describe the way their minds work. Those passages were really well done. I’ve read a lot of zombie fiction over the years. This was by far the scariest example of them that I’ve come across so far!

I would have liked to see more character development in this book, especially when it came to Hunter. He made decisions during the course of the plot that I didn’t always understand. What I did manage to figure out about his personality was fascinating, but there simply wasn’t enough information about it for me to form an accurate mental image of what it would be like to be in the same room as him or how the Rapture changed his personality.

The dialogue was short and efficient. Given the dangerous predicament they’d found themselves in, it made sense to me that Hunter and his friends wouldn’t be particularly interested in drawn-out discussions. I appreciated the fact that they showed their awareness of what was going on in part by choosing to stay quiet as much as they possibly could. It was a realistic response to their circumstances, and I liked that.

Zombie Rapture is a good choice for anyone in the mood for a fresh twist on this genre.

It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County’s most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.

The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

I like Grisham’s novels. I know when I crack one of these babies, I’m going to get a rich story, full of interesting characters and a vibrant landscape. I wasn’t disappointed with this book. Sycamore Row takes place four years after A Time to Kill and is a good follow-up. I must admit, every time Jake, the lawyer and protagonist is mentioned, I pictured him as Matthew McConaughey. Not a bad visual and Grisham described him that way, too, so it all worked.

There were times in this book where the POV hopped. One sentence would be in one character’s head, then a whole few pages in another, then to a third character for another couple of lines. That could be confusing for some readers. I was able to follow along, but it wasn’t ideal.

This book also has racial undertones. If that’s not the kind of story you want, then it might not be the book for you. That said, this book takes place in Mississippi in the late 1980’s, in a time where race is important.

There are twists, turns and things I didn’t see coming in the story. I won’t give away much, but I couldn’t put the book down. I had to know what would happen next and how it would all work out.

I enjoyed this book and would love to spend more time in the world of Jake, Portia, Carla and the rest of the town of Clanton. If you like a mystery with a small town twist, then this might be the book for you.

When a young girl’s body is discovered in a shallow grave on a farm outside of Ripley, Ohio, FBI Agent Kendal McNally returns to her estranged hometown to investigate. Reed Harvey’s life was turned upside down when his father was convicted of murder. It didn’t help that Kendal had been the key witness in the trial or that she turned her back on him and their friendship. Now she has returned to investigate another murder, living in an apartment above his restaurant and making him remember what almost was.

Despite their pasts, Kendal and Reed turn to each other as Kendal’s investigation unravels a web of lies in a town where everyone thought they knew everyone’s business. And when another girl goes missing, Kendal will unearth a devastating secret that may put an end to the murders—except one. Hers.

Can Kendal right the wrongs of the past?

Kendal is definitely a tough heroine. After escaping a physically and emotionally abusive father, Kendal built a successful career as an FBI agent. She never dreamed she go back to her hometown on a case she’s personally connected too. Her homecoming to Ripley is very awkward, especially given her father’s position in the community. All of their interactions are toxic and prone to exploding into scary confrontations. In addition to facing her father, Kendal also comes face to face with her former best friend and first love, Reed.

Kendal and Reed are beyond damaged by their pasts. I couldn’t help but mourn the loss of their innocence and how wonderful their budding young romance might have been. Kendal and Reed constantly doubt the other’s motivations. They have spent years keeping people at arm’s length. Kendal in particular seems to be obsessed with never letting anyone see her as weak. While I understand that Kendal and Reed have had to be strong to overcome the challenges they’ve faced in life, they just don’t seem to know when to quit. They are so busy trying to protect themselves that they fail to see the damage they do to each other. It is frustrating to watch them together because it is clear that they have strong feelings for each other, but refuse to admit it. As I read, I couldn’t help but think that one honest conversation would work wonders for the couple. Even though the road to their happy ending is going to be bumpy, I think it will all be worth it in the end.

I must say that Ms. Wolfer knows how to write a good suspense. The pacing in Shallow Graves is excellent, and I could hardly put the book down once I started it. It is difficult to figure out who the murderer is because there are several plausible suspects. The ending is well done and very satisfying. Although I must say there is still a bit of a loose end where Kendal’s father is concerned. I would really have liked to see him pay for some of the terrible things he’s done. However, I can safely assure readers that his life will never be the same now that his secrets are out.

Shallow Graves is a thoroughly enjoyable book. The characters are well rounded and the pacing kept me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend it to fans of romantic suspense.

What a fascinating book, and nothing like I expected.

I’ve read one other book by this author, so expected rich descriptions and well-rounded, three dimensional characters, which I certainly go here as well. I feel as if I could go to Ireland and know exactly where every square foot of this setting would be. The sights, sounds, smells and more are all well written here.

I loved the character of Charleigh, though I have to admit she took to having a ghost around a lot more readily than I would have! She’s having a rough time on her trip to Ireland, supposedly a second honeymoon after twenty years of marriage, only to be dumped via text by her philandering husband. Later, when I find out she’s known about his cheating for years and years and stayed with him, though, I did lose a bit of respect. Still, aside from that, she’s an admirable, older, less than perfectly formed heroine.

Sean is pretty awesome. He’s handsome and unbelievably crazy about Charleigh. There were a few times at the start where I was a bit overwhelmed by his attentions to her, considering we believed they’d only just met, but even so — sexy, Irish guy (er, ghost) … who could resist?

When things start to get odd, Charleigh is incredibly strong. I’m not sure what I’d have done in her place, but I wouldn’t have minded the attentions of Sean! Honestly, the hardest part about writing this review is not including spoilers, so let me simply say this: if you like romance with a surprising, paranormal twist … if you enjoy reading a book that seems to be one thing and then becomes something entirely different, the type of book you want to go back and read again the moment you finish because the twist blows your mind and you need to see where the clues were planted, then this is the book for you. While it had the occasional hiccup for me, I still very much liked it. Technically perfect, quite enjoyable and delightfully different, A Thin Slice of Heaven cemented my admiration for the author and ensures I’ll be picking up future releases.

As the three negotiate unfamiliar relationship territory, a stalker pursues Isabelle with relentless intent. When another unexpected visitor arrives threatening the peaceful life she’s worked hard to build, Isabelle refuses to surrender without a fight.

I liked this one a lot. It was a sexy, suspenseful read that was easy to enjoy.

This series is set in the fictional town of Enclave, Montana and has the exciting premise of the menage lifestyle. Now that sounds very exciting but there is always some type of trouble going on in this town. In other words, it’s a lively set-up that is a sexy right up my alley read.

The author did a good job on this story. It had an interesting plot with plenty happening to keep me engrossed in the conflict. The story revolves around a trio of lovers, Warrick, Isabella and Colton. Our two handsome guys are confirmed players who have no intention of ever settling down. Until now. Isabelle recently moved to town and set her sights on the confirmed bachelors even though she may get her heart broken. There was also some suspense that unfolded with a dangerous case of mistaken identity, a deadly vendetta and some family secrets. All of these events made it an exciting book.

The characters in the story were well developed and had their own personalities. There was Warrick as the man in charge, and the one with the most to lose. Colton was more passive but the most charming. Then we had Isabella who had endured some hard knocks but kept her sense of humour. I liked them all so it was delightful watching as their relationship unfolded. Now, I would be remiss not to mention the scorching hot menage love scenes. The love scenes were fairly intense and included some anal play. It was also, and this is the most important part for me, very romantic.

You might say that this story is mostly about being willing to give up everything to be with the ones you love. Overall, it was a great read that was beautifully written. I look forward to the next book in this series.
