In this Newbery Honor book, a thirteen-year-old boy struggles to survive on his own in the wilderness of eighteenth-century Maine.

When Matt’s father leaves him on his own to guard their new cabin in the wilderness, Matt is scared but determined to be brave and prove that he can take care of himself. And things are going fine until a white stranger steals his gun, leaving Matt defenseless and unable to hunt for his food. Then Matt meets Attean, a Native boy from the Beaver tribe, and soon learns that people called the land around him home long before the white settlers ever arrived. As Attean teaches him more about his own culture, Matt must come to terms with what the changing frontier really means. Now with an introduction by critically acclaimed writer Joseph Bruchac about the historical context and the relationships between Native peoples and white settlers in the eighteenth century.

Matt knew life alone in the wilderness of Maine wouldn’t be easy, but he had no idea just how many challenges he would face.

Matt is in a tough situation. He and his father have worked hard to build a new cabin for their family. However, his father needs to go back to Massachusetts and retrieve the rest of the family. Matt will have to take care of the cabin and garden for months while his father is gone. The garden is especially important as the family will depend on a good harvest to survive the winter. It is a heavy weight for a young boy to bear.

At first, things go smoothly enough. Matt follows his father’s instructions and settles into a comfortable routine. I admire his bravery and sense of duty. However, when Matt’s gun is stolen, he finds himself with limited options for obtaining food and no way to defend himself. As if that weren’t bad enough, a disastrous encounter with bees leaves Matt injured and sick. Matt’s story could have ended there, but he is found by Saknis and his grandson, Attean, members of the Beaver tribe.

Matt and Attean have an interesting relationship. At first, Attean clearly wants nothing to do with Matt. Attean only visits Matt because Saknis wants Attean to learn to read English. Matt isn’t exactly fond of Attean either, but he is grateful to Saknis for his help after the incident with the bees and wants to show his appreciation, so he agrees to teach Attean. The lessons do not go well. At first, both boys are stubborn and unwilling to look past their differences. However, the walls between the two gradually begin to break down. Attean enjoys the stories that Matt reads, and Matt learns to make snares and a bow and arrows. Matt finds himself looking forward to his treks through the forest with Attean. The tension between the two eases as they take the time to learn from each other and eventually become friends. When Matt’s father isn’t back at the appointed time, Matt is faced with a difficult choice. Will he risk facing winter alone in the cabin, or leave with Attean and his family?

I read The Sign of the Beaver when I was young, and I found the plot to be just as captivating as an adult. I especially enjoyed reading this book with my children and watching them experience it for the first time. We were all on the edge of our seats as Matt and Attean faced bees, a bear, metal traps, and the arrival of winter. I will say that the portrayal of the Native Americans is somewhat problematic. I highly recommend reading the introduction before reading the novel as it addresses some of these issues. Despite these issues, I believe at its heart The Sign of the Beaver is a story of friendship and definitely worth reading.

I truly enjoyed rediscovering The Sign of the Beaver. It is a tale of friendship and adventure sure to capture the imaginations of readers young and old alike.

Hayley — Having both a father and brother who are in law enforcement, and overprotective, doesn’t make it easy to date. He made my knees weak and blew my mind. I just didn’t realize the night would end with a free gift with purchase — one that’s an eighteen-year-long commitment.

Hawk — Never thought I’d make it to the age of forty without ever finding someone special. But I did. Then I met Hayley. She’s the last woman I should fall for, but I can’t seem to help myself. Too bad I figured it out after she disappeared. If I’d known our one night had repercussions, I’d have tried harder to find her. Finding out I have a daughter is the best and scariest thing, but it means I get what I want most. A family.

This was a fun one! I really enjoyed every moment of this novella. It has a great romance, complicated conflicts, stubborn dads, a heroine who is just as stubborn and a hero who finally gets the one wish granted he never thought possible. On top of it all is Cuddles, the best animal side-kick ever.

Ms. Wylde threw in some bad guys, drama, suspense, family togetherness and some of that MC magic she’s known for. I was a bit shocked when Hawk reprimanded Lia but when he explained it to the witness, it turned out to be what had to be done. Something like that could not go unaddressed and I guess I’m a bit bloodthirsty or I really, really liked Hayley, the heroine, because to be truthful, I felt she deserved it too.

I think the only annoying niggle is the complete lack of communication and assumption on both character’s sides. He’s older, she’s younger, I think their perspectives were colored by it just a little, but they really are good together. They both thought the same way about the other, which could be considered a comedy of errors, but my heartstrings were more involved with Hayley’s situation because she is a product of her upbringing. Her dad held the strings way too tight and I think that is what allowed the situation to come about in the first place. If only there was less assumption and more willingness to reach out and TALK!

All that being said, the zing and sizzle between Hawk and Hayley was like spontaneous combustion. Passions exploded early on and for a good chunk of the story, the effects of their encounter haunted them. The big question for a reader is what was it going to take to get them together? Communication, that’s what. Not how you might guess it might go though, so readers are in for an interesting time.

This being the super-hot kind of romance that this is, there are a lot of description, some toys and naughty shenanigans to thrill readers of this romance genre. All were written well and are effectively titillating.

Fans of MC romances by Ms. Wylde are in for a treat when they read Hawk’s story. I was thoroughly entertained and am very satisfied with their happy ever after ending. This was a very good read.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases in the world. How much do you know about it?

Ms. Almond had a friendly, conversational writing style that I enjoyed reading. It almost felt like I was sitting in a coffee shop with her as she talked about how her epilepsy affected her medically, socially, and emotionally. She explained every facet of her disease clearly and without making assumptions about what her audience already knew about the topic. Occasionally, I giggled at the jokes she made about how she handled some of the potentially embarrassing consequences of having epilepsy. There is definitely something to be said for purposefully seeking out the humorous side of serious subject matter when possible.

There were a few times when the author veered so off-topic that I wondered how she was planning to tie her anecdotes back to the topic at hand. They generally happened when she was describing where she was and what she was doing before a recent seizure occurred. While I did soon figure out where she was going in those passages, it was a bit jarring to leap from sensible advice in one chapter to what appeared to be a completely unrelated story in the next one. I’m saying this as a reader who really liked this book in general and will be mentioning it to the people I know who have or who love someone who has this illness.

Speaking of advice, my favorite portions were the ones that discussed what the author learned about trying to prevent seizures and reducing their severity through certain dietary and lifestyle changes. These pages were filled with tips on everything from what to eat to how she responds when she feels a seizure coming on. Obviously, not every tip will work for everyone, but I took notes of the things she recommended so I’ll have a few new tricks up my sleeves the next time I’m in the same room as someone who has a seizure. There are so many things that can be done to help someone in this situation whether you are the person who is experiencing them or a friendly bystander.

Honestly, I believe that everyone should read Sparky Brain – Epileptic Tips and Stories. Knowledge is power!

Pauly was such a compassionate and kind kid. These qualities of his even extended to people in his life who didn’t always have the best intentions. Seeing his consistency not only showed off his strong moral code, it made me like him even more. He was the sort of person anyone who needed help could rely on. What made him even more remarkable was that he’d developed these traits at such a young age!

It would have been helpful to have a deeper understanding of what a Masquerade was. I was thrown off by the early and often vague descriptions of it. While they did eventually become clearer, it sure would have been nice to have someone in this storyline explain what exactly they were and why they chose Pauly as their companion. Was it related to what a good person he was or was it a random choice on their part? I certainly don’t mind some unanswered questions in the speculative fiction I read, but I would have given this a perfect rating if it had been a little more forthcoming with its answers about the most important aspects of this creature.

The ending was well-written and suited the tone of this short story perfectly. It left me yearning for more in a good way. I was pretty satisfied with what I’d learned about Pauly and this magical version of Nigeria, but I also wished for a sequel about him and his Masquerades when he was older and perhaps lived on his own. He struck me as the sort of character who would only grow more fascinating over time.

I’d recommend Masquerade Season to anyone who enjoys modern-day fairy tales.

After a quick search I was delighted to find Claiming Her Bears, the complete series which includes Protected by Bears, Polar Dream (novella) and the final story, Craved by Bears – it’s the whole romance story arc and it’s well worth the time and money. I was really happy I was able to read the whole romance adventure without waiting for individual installments and I enjoyed every moment. The book runs the gamut like gods from mythology, including the Fates, a reverse harem, bear shifters, the world after the ice caps melted and the planet flooded, and something called vampire bears. Ms. MacKinnon has an amazing imagination and I had fun exploring her worldbuilding.

The heroine is Isla, and Toben, Hunn, Ran and Finn are her mates. There are accent marks in the names of Hunn and Ran but I don’t know how to find the font that has them. Alis is a character that isn’t corporeal but very important and Bertrand, Arnold and Ruby are the other important secondary characters. They end up being a big family but before most get their happily ever afters, many challenges need to be overcome. The heroine, Isla, is the person with the most growth. She’s the main focus and she makes the biggest sacrifices to not only save her own happiness but everyone else she loves. It’s quite the adventure.

Since it’s reverse harem, four to one, you know there’s a lot of physical hijinks with the men servicing Isla when passions run high. There is no mixing up between the men, it’s purely focused on the heroine and yet the author didn’t go nuts with the bedroom antics. I was grateful for that because the plot conflicts were much more interesting and unique. There’s the bad guy in Canada, Glut and her daughters in the dream world, Isla’s tyrannical uncle, and the breaking of a curse that prevents werebear females from having cubs. They are left with remnants of the old world, certain foodstuffs and clothing left in abandoned houses. The cast of characters are facing the lack of electricity, running water and medicines, and simple things like chocolate that we take for granted in our time are almost impossible to find. Isla has memories of before, when the world was as we currently know it now, and yet she’s a survivor and has done alright for herself, but escaping her uncle was the best thing she ever did, even if she didn’t think she’d survive the choice.

I think the cutest part of the book is baby Ruby. She’s the result of Isla’s relationship with all four men. No one knows who the actual dad might be, but it’s a nonissue. The love that abounds is clear and wonderful. And, considering how special Ruby turned out to be, and the challenges Isla has in bringing up a cub is especially intriguing since the heroine at the start was human. I did say the heroine was the one that experienced the most growth, right? Well, going from human to not is truly fascinating.

I probably could review each book individually, but since I bought the one book that has all of them, and each one is a continuation from the previous one, it makes sense to recommend readers buy the big volume and read them all like I did. It’s a much better experience and a lot more fun. Of all of Isla’s mates, I actually couldn’t pick a favorite. However, the one that emotionally touched me the most was Ran. His story, when he finally reveals what happened to him as a cub, not only made me truly sad, but it made Isla sad and angry too. The author’s description during Ran’s recounting was powerful and effective, and even a bit disturbing.

There is a lot more I could say because there’s a richness in the storytelling when read as one volume. I heartily recommend paranormal romance fans grab the big book, with all 3 stories plus the novella, for a truly entertaining and fascinating reading experience. I think Claiming Her Bears is a perfect way to spend an afternoon. That’s what I did and I had a ball.

Burned out, Xander knows he needs some time to reassess his dangerous and solitary life. Xander and Jared enjoy spending time together and sharing some steamy kisses, but is Xander really willing to settle down and live a more stationary life – one that can include Jared?

I really enjoyed this character-centric story. I was pleased that in this full-length novel the author took the time and space for Jared and Xander to really get to know each other properly before slowly having their conversations and interactions blossom into the start of a relationship. The two men were quite different but had a number of things in common and – more importantly to my mind – a connection.

Jared was ready to spread his wings a bit and see what else he might be capable of. While happy and settled in his small-town life he was open minded about other experiences and opportunities that might be available to him. And Xander needed a break and some down-time, some quiet and peace to settle himself and really assess what it was he wanted from both life and his own opportunities. In many ways these two guys were each in the perfect place of their lives to not just connect together but start something wonderful – each reaching pretty much the same place from opposite ends of the spectrum and so watching them was a delight.

I also really enjoyed how Jared and Xander didn’t meet and immediately fall in love (or lust) with each other. Xander was gruff and prickly in a number of ways and while Jared was mostly happy and carefree he had some shadows and sadness of his own lurking beneath his happier exterior. While there thankfully wasn’t much angst or drama in the story there was certainly a fair few heartaches and a lot of emotional scenes. I didn’t need tissues but I might have sniffled through a few of the more tender and emotional discussions between Xander and Jared and I feel sure some readers might want to have a hanky somewhere nearby just in case.

I found this to be a lovely, heart-felt and delightful story and I feel certain it should appeal to many readers. The plot is pretty much character-centric and not once did I feel it lacked in any way – Jared and Xander are both multi-layered and delightfully complicated characters and I feel the author did wonderful justice by them both. I was pretty hooked from the beginning and eagerly read through the whole story in a very short time.

Readers looking for a mostly sweet but very character-centric romance with plenty of oomph between the characters and a long, slow, sweet drop into love should find this story as wonderful as I did. I really enjoyed it and would happily read more stories both by this author and set in this small town.

This was a warm and fuzzy novella with some steamy moments. Not too much is mentioned about the BDSM world in detail, more of a light brushstroke. In fact, not too much is mentioned in detail at all, which usually drives me insane, but it worked here. It really did. Instead of too much bumpf about background detail, I was able to focus on Sebastian and Jasper to my heart’s content. Yes, they both have issues, and yes, maybe I would have liked more information because that’s just what I’m like, but YES, this novella worked and gave me a good, all-round story that brought a big smile to my face.
