A sharpshooter who’s lost his sight…

When a stray pistol ball from the battlefield took Nash’s sight, it also took his entire identity. He’s retreated to his father’s county home to lick his wounds, but his drinking and isolation have only made things worse. When Nash’s father, a powerful earl, threatens to send Nash to an asylum, his former brothers-in-arms call in one of their own to set Nash back on the right course. Nash fears he’s fallen too far and perhaps ending it all is the best solution. Until he encounters a woman in the garden singing a bawdy tune at the top of her lungs.

An outcast who sees too much…

Prudence Howard has traveled the world with her missionary parents. But after the scandal she caused in Cairo, they’ve foisted her on a vicar in the small town of Milcroft and sailed to the Far East to evangelize without her. Pru doesn’t mean to cause trouble; it’s just that being good is so very hard. When she meets Nash Pope, she’s instantly intrigued. He might be hot-tempered, but he’s handsome and unusual and arouses her interest and passion like no one she’s ever met. He might not know he needs or even wants her help, but Pru has a plan to save him.

Nash is bewildered by the unconventional woman who keeps turning up on his doorstep. She tries to teach him night writing, claims a feral peacock is a momentous sign, and makes his toes curl when she kisses him. She refuses to give up on him. But though Nash finds it easy to believe in Pru, can he ever trust himself again?

I am exceedingly glad that Ms. Galen chose Nash as the next hero to find his happy ever after. When he shot (wounded only) one of his good friends in the last book, I just knew he was a man that needed saving. What happened to him was horrible indeed, but what he’s chosen to do with his life is a tragedy. If anyone needed an intervention, it was Nash Pope. To say his ‘rescuer’ was unconventional is an understatement. However, Rowden was the perfect choice. He didn’t scare easily and was committed to his friendship with the hero, even though said hero threatens to shoot him. From the first chapter I’d come to the conclusion that the unusual and unexpected were the very things that could jumpstart Nash into living again. How he came upon Prudence and what she was singing not only got the hero’s attention, but mine too. The heroine is not typical or boring, which means she fit the bill perfectly. Prudence was a delight, fun to watch and she truly livened up the storyline.

Prudence wasn’t all sunshine and bawdy tunes – she has her own issues, ones that made me feel strongly that I wanted her to find happiness too. I wanted her to be wanted for herself and I wanted that spark of life within her to flourish. Well, I later found out that the heroine has a bit too much spark, if you get my drift. Yes, she’s sweet, and her personality plays off well against the grumpy hero, but she has a secret. Personally, I think the author was genius. It was a kind of role reversal – she’s not exactly what I expected but I can tell you, Nash ends up being so intrigued by her, even though he tries really hard not to be, that he just can’t help himself. I think the push/pull of their friendship and relationship was the best part of the story. I enjoyed watching it grow and I was definitely entertained by Nash’s inability to resist Prudence. I also was happy to see that the heroine was a really wonderful plot mover – she motivated some important secondary characters to get involved with Nash’s life, whether he liked it or not. The results were storybook perfect. And fun. And humorous at times. There were SO many scenes that made me smile and grin.

Mrs. Northgate’s role is as an important secondary character. She helps Prudence grow in confidence and skill. She also plays a vital role in the drama and serious scenes that occur later in the book. I like how the author portrayed Mrs. Northgate’s personality. She ended up as being one of my favorites, after Nash and Prudence of course. There are others but I won’t mention them. I’ll let readers decide who their favorites are. Oh, wait, there’s Clopdon. Okay, his addition to the story made me grin a lot too. And giggle.

There’s quite a bit of symbolism in the story too. For instance, peacocks. Now that I think back on those scenes I can clearly state that Ms. Galen not only has a way of creating a romance story worth reading, but in this book especially, she created a romantic feeling, a mystical, optimistic, sigh-worthy ambiance that fed into the feel-good emotion I felt while heading for the very satisfying and swoon-worthy happy-ever-after ending.

I know I’m being gushy about this book. I really enjoyed myself. It’s not all fun and lightheartedness though. There is a bit of villainy aimed at Prudence so that created drama, intensity and suspense. Then there is the threat that Nash might end up in an asylum. It’s a race against time to convince everyone that he can be saved. So many details, so many other aspects to this novel, it’s hard to avoid spoilers. This book is chock full of good stuff.

I’ll end my review here. I could go on and on because Ms. Galen packed a lot of depth and details within this book’s pages. Sweet Rogue of Mine is an excellent read, a great addition to the series and it’s going on my keeper shelf.

I couldn’t stop smiling as I read about this new tradition. It felt like something that should have been thought of many years ago!

One of the best scenes was the one that explained the main character’s process for picking out appropriate cards for everyone on her list. She truly went out of her way to personalize every single card so that it would be as meaningful as possible for that specific friend, including the ones who were pretty picky about what they liked. It was as adorable as it was thoughtful.

Mr. Hargreaves did an excellent job of introducing realistic conflict to the plot without making it too scary for little ones. Honestly, the unexpected problem Little Miss Valentine faced with delivering her cards made perfect sense once I’d learned about how she was planning to transport herself to everyone’s house before Valentine’s Day began. I couldn’t wait to find out how she’d react to it or what she might do to fix it.

This story was part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone work.

Little Miss Valentine was a delightful take on Valentine’s Day that should be read by anyone who adores this holiday.

I love both characters in this book and loved them equally. In fact if I had to choose between Jake and Cody, I’d have to think a long time. Even though Cody is a dog, I’d have to think about it.

All kidding aside, Mark Nolan has written another book full of action and full of interaction. The thing about this series is that the characters Nolan has crafted are as interesting as his stories. Veronica’s new job comes with a darling little boy, a Gothic castle and…a beast?

When recently laid-off Francophile Veronica Carson is recommended for an au pair job by the elegant leader of her French conversation group, she isn’t sure what to expect—but a Gothic castle deep in the wilds of Maine is certainly not it. Still, she’s drawn in by her joyful little charge, Jean-Philippe, and even more drawn to his brooding father.

Ruthlessly successful businessman Alain Reynard has loved before and has no wish to repeat the painful experience. The tragedy of his recent past is still fresh in his mind, and he wants nothing to do with his son’s lovely new au pair. Despite his best efforts, though, he can’t seem to get her off his mind.

Veronica must decide if Alain really is a beast and, if so, whether she can love him enough to break through the dark memories and secrets that tether him to what once was.

Veronica Carson is a young woman who was laid off from her former job. Yet with a referral from an older lady in her French circle, she’s lucky enough to be offered an au pair job to a sweet young boy and his rather formidable, rich father who has many secrets in his background. This may be a plot that has been used many times over, but I like the way the author has developed such wonderful characters and how just one person can change the life of many just by being herself.

I love the character of Veronica who is well developed with an extremely open personality and a warmth that envelops all around her. Watching her with her charge, Jean-Philippe, warmed my heart. I had to laugh at his exuberance and energy, he is interested in learning anything and everything she can teach him with open curiosity and sweetness. She is a perfect fit for him, loving to have all the adventures he could wish, and I have no idea how she keeps up with him. Just reading about it makes me exhausted.

Alain is a remarkably interesting character that has so many secrets and distrust everyone but his son and family members. He hired Veronica on the spot when he saw just how wonderful she interacted with his son, being able to put up with all his chatter with humor.

Once their intimate relationship started, she saw the softer side of him and the incredibly sweet and hot lover. She was surprised at how careful and understanding he was when she admitted that she was a virgin, he also was a little possessive. She never expected him to return her feelings and she kept telling herself that he was her employer and that it wasn’t professional. Yet, when they gave into their own lust, everything else left her brain.

I liked this story and am very glad I picked it up. Recommended.

Sadie, is an FBI agent working undercover investigating Chase and the company he works for. Unfortunately, what should be a two week open and shut case turns into more.

Chase and Sadie are polar opposites and because of their different personalities, they frustrate each other. Chase is laid back, fun and outgoing and everyone loves him. Chase is also full of contrasts; he is an accountant who likes working with numbers, but he isn’t boring or introverted. Although he has goals and works hard, Chase makes it look like so easy people underestimate him. Chase has his vulnerabilities and he has made up for what he considers his inadequacies, by making everyone laugh and being their friend.

Sadie is a woman trying to make it in a male dominated field and she is afraid to let her guard down. She is an uptight, straight laced workaholic. Rather than disliking Sadie, I felt sorry for her and was hoping Chase would be able to loosen her up.

What I enjoyed most about Chase and Sadie are their layers and imperfections.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading their story and thought they were great together. They share a lot of chemistry and although they are polar opposites, they work well together and are perfect for each other. This is the first book I have read by Isabel Jolie and it won’t be my last. I couldn’t put this book down and I stayed up way too late reading it.

For six days, they face danger from the police, weather, and pirates, not to mention the constant threat of capsizing as they take on water while living only on dry, rationed rice.

Bao, Binh and the others hope a refugee camp in Indonesia accepts them, but there’s no guarantee. Word has it they may be turned away and even towed back out to sea to starve. I loved the fact that this gripping adventure was inspired by the real experiences of Mr. Pham in the early 1980s. He suffered many physical and emotional hardships during his escape from South Vietnam and the many different refugee camps and other places he stayed during his long immigration process. There were moments when I wondered whether specific scenes were fictionalized or based on true events. So much emotion was packed into all of them that I couldn’t always guess where the line was between fact and fiction. I credit the authors for seamlessly moving between what really happened versus what could have happened. They did an excellent job of portraying what the fictional Binh and Bao went through as they risked it all for a safer and happier life.

The characters met all sorts of different people in this tale, from those who were violent and cruel to others who would do anything to help a stranger. It was fascinating to me to try to guess where any one particular character might fall on this scale. Since this was written for middle grade readers, I was glad that such a strong emphasis was placed on the many kind and helpful folks in the world while still acknowledging that not everyone fits that bill.

This book included several moments of joy and humor that were as unexpected as they were delightful. Some of them happened when Bao and Binh were in circumstances that were otherwise quite difficult. It was nice to see them smile and even laugh after all they’d been through. The trauma they endured was real, but those scenes gave me so much hope for their futures while I waited to find out if the United States would accept their applications to immigrate there.

I’d wholeheartedly recommend The Dragon’s Song to anyone who has ever been an immigrant or would like to read a detailed, empathetic account of what that experience can be like.

Unpleasant things happen to everyone sometimes. They can’t always be stopped, but maybe there’s another way to make them less bothersome.

The rhyming scheme in this picture book was perfect. Not only did it clearly share Pickerton’s adventures as he went through what appeared to be a pretty ordinary day for him, the rhythm of the words made me want to sing them as I was reading. They were all placed exactly where they needed to be, and the images they created in my imagination made me smile.

I adored Pickerton’s attitude. He was such a tidy pig that I wasn’t sure how he’d react when he accidentally fell into a big mud puddle. That would certainly be enough to annoy many humans and pigs alike! While I’ll leave it up to other readers to discover his reaction to that unfortunate accident for themselves, I will say that he was an excellent role model for any kid who is suddenly dismayed by something small but irritating.

While they weren’t described in as much detail, I also appreciated the references to other setbacks Pickerton had experienced and how he dealt with them. They showed a positive pattern of behavior for this cheerful little pig that made me wish for a sequel. He seemed to have so much more to say to his audience. I don’t know if the author is planning to write one or not, but there is certainly plenty of room for one here if she decides to do it!

Pickerton’s Jiggle was filled with joy. I’d eagerly recommend it to readers of all ages.

Stella’s character development was handled beautifully. She experienced some difficult events during the course of the plot. Each one of them left its mark on her in ways that might be subtle or profound depending on where she was in her journey and what she was currently doing to make sense of it all. I genuinely liked this intelligent, sensible character and hoped she find all of the answers that she was seeking.

The plot twist at the end made me gasp with delight. It wasn’t something I’d figured out in advance, so it was wonderful to be surprised just when I thought I knew how everything was going to be wrapped up. I was perfectly satisfied with how it resolved the biggest conflicts, but it also made me yearn for a sequel that might go into greater detail about certain parts of this world that I still had a few questions about.

I was also pleased with the world building. The author used every one of the fifty-four pages available to him to make Torrance, Indiana feel nearly as real as any small town I’ve ever lived in or visited. It was neat to sketch out all of the different ways people were connected there and what they actually thought of their neighbors. Just like in our world, not everyone always necessarily got along, but they did respect each other as fellow human beings and hope for the best for everyone in their community.

This was my first experience with Mr. Dygert’s work, and I couldn’t be more impressed. He had a gorgeous writing style that gently pulled me into the normally quiet life in Torrance. Everything from the personalities of the town locals to what the burgers and milkshakes tasted like at everyone’s favorite fast food joint there were described in such exquisite detail that by the last sentence I honestly felt like I’d just returned from a visit to this mysterious little town.

Stella was the best science fiction novella I’ve read in ages. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

This was a really great read. To begin with any time an author develops a character with a dog for a sidekick I’m happy. Especially if the character talks to the dog as much as I do my own. But Zeke, said dog, is not the highlight of this story. Important but not the best part. The best part is the character as well as the side characters.

When I tell you a little about this story, you’re going to begin to think it’s another “legal” law thing, but it isn’t. Burr Lafayette, the main character is a lawyer, but this is almost like a mystery, very much so. He’s the kind of character that always catches me right from the beginning and there can be no question that I’ll finish the book. This time though, Charles Cutter even gave me a picture in my mind. Burr is a little run down, not just his clothing but maybe his physique too. I just know he’s a little overweight. And he’s that character that’s always chasing a dollar to pay his rent; always hoping for a case to pay his bills.

The story is intriguing and an attention getter in and of itself but the humor… I loved the humor. Cutter created side characters that make the whole story more humorous. They’re fidgety, picky, and yet indispensable. Cutter even makes the prosecutor funny. Or maybe I meant to say, makes fun of the prosecutor:) Burr is humorous out loud but he’s also that kind of character always thinking some smart cynical or truthful thing to say in his mind. You know? All the things you’d love to say out loud yourself.

So we have a lawyer with a legal case that he needs to solve but hopes the business law part of it goes on forever so he can pay his bills. He becomes a criminal lawyer because he needs to pay his bills and there happens to be a death. We have Zeke, a great dog, a boat, and a couple of hilarious employees. An author who can make even the trial procedures interesting and humorous. All rolled into what I’m going to call a mystery. This is Book 3 of a series titled “Bear Bones Mystery”.

I never ever go backwards in a series but this time I’ll break my rule. I’ll start back at Book 1 if you’ll be working on Book 4 Mr. Cutter.
