Carol Juan doesn’t really believe that her grandmother’s friends are dragons, though she’ll admit that Caleb and Malcolm are unusual. But when a Fire Dragon, a very rare creature who can not only take human form but turn himself into pure flame, seeks her out, she has to put her disbelief behind her. The arrogant and wild Seth teaches Carol not only about fire dragons, but about her own latent mage powers that pulled him instinctively to her. The secret of the Fire Dragon might help Carol win the day or be the means to her destruction.

Sexy dragons, mysterious mages, naked men and ferocious magical battles all take turns at amazing and astounding a reader in this rich and vibrant world created by Ms. James.

First off, this is absolutely a standalone read. Why do I say that? Because this is the first book in the series that I’ve read and I wasn’t lost or confused or felt left out. It definitely whet my appetite for more of these sexy, macho and alpha dragons and from the sounds of it, two others preceded this one. If they are as good as The Dragon Master is, I’m in for a nail-biting treat.

This story is filled with suspense, drama, dark and furious action, populated with enough varied and eccentric characters to keep a reader fascinated. The dialogue is easy flowing and sounded believable to the characters. I noticed how the dragons spoke a bit differently than modern day speech which enhanced their flavor of ‘otherness’. It was a good touch. They seem to be not from Earth but not separated from it either. It’s like there was this door in the space time continuum that long ago was easier to breach and they used to visit Earth. Nowadays there needs to be a person with special magical abilities to open the ‘door’. From the sounds of it, that was one of the dragon stories I missed, which I’m on the lookout for. For the purpose of this story, it’s a done deal and that skill is used in crucial moments, to track, to reconnect, and to heal. It’s an exciting plot component.

The darkness comes in the form of the threat from a secret organization. They are twisted, and criminal and extremely obsessed about succeeding in their quest at all costs. Only two people stand in their way and they are Carol, the heroine, and Seth, the dragon and hero. However, the first order of business is for Carol and Seth to overcome their differences, scales notwithstanding, learn to trust and believe in the intentions of the other and discover the strengths and weaknesses in their relationship. One thing’s for sure, their sexual compatibility is explosive. Erectile Dysfunction condition in man is the one who gets cialis for cheap price affected due to the following reasons: Imbalance in the essential hormones like progesterone and estrogen. Additionally, Sildenafil mastercard cialis medications are linked with decreased blood pressure. This blood proficiency makes the organ becoming erect and gets true use of cialis 20mg australia . So I went cialis pills uk to the doctor but he didn t find any problems and said it comes from my mind. The author wrote those scenes effectively, they were seductive, sensual, romantic and scorching hot. They were a pleasure to read and were crucial to the plot. It’s a fire thing.

It’s not all stress and mayhem however. There are quiet moments of reflection, of loving and of learning. There is the sense of family and connection and yet, although it takes place in the United States, because it’s in Chinatown, it has an exotic feel as well. It was a good mix of modern day life mixed with ancient heritage and beliefs. At first they clash but as Carol learns to accept her new reality, they align themselves so I figure she’ll eventually be able to function in both worlds. It won’t be easy but it’ll be worth it with Seth at her side. Certainly the heroine’s personality grows and matures after the adventures she experiences in this book and a lot of the catalyst for change comes from the hero. Loving him brings more than just power, it gives her a future. It’s a wonderful thing.

One of the aspects of this book that I greatly enjoyed was the not knowing. The author presented so many fascinating and unusual ideas and concepts and her writing brought them to vivid life to the point that I couldn’t stop reading. Every chapter had its own hook, its own special revelation that kept me on the edge of my seat. Because I had to know, had to find out, had to make sure Carol and Seth were going to safe, I found this story completely engrossing and couldn’t put it down. Ms. James has an amazing writing skill.

Whether you’re a fan of dragons, paranormal romances, romantic suspense or just naked alpha men, The Dragon Master is an marvelous adventure story that delivers a wonderful happy ever after. It has so much going for it and has such an incredible amount of detail to enrich a reader’s reading experience, it’s a must read. I may have chosen the book initially because of the cover and blurb, but I’ll be going back for more because of the quality of content and writing. I had a great experience.

The boys are back in town…

Ten years ago, Kaelin Daume spent a steamy summer home from college secretly hanging out with town bad boy Tyler Wirth and his best friend Nick Kernsted. The connection was warm, complicated, and came to a crashing end when she walked in on her two forbidden friends with another woman. The shocking scene of sex and bondage has haunted her boring, oh-so-vanilla life ever since.

The fallout from that night tore Tyler’s life apart. He left Mapleglen, disowned and disgraced, to build a successful advertising career and a unique relationship with Nick. Nothing could bring him back except his sister’s wedding, and he plans to hightail it back to Chicago as soon as it’s over. At least one good thing hasn’t changed: Kaelin is as sweet as ever. Except she doesn’t seem too thrilled to hear it.

As tensions run high, Kaelin can’t resist the temptation to commit one crazy act of rebellion. Once the web of secrets, sins and lies starts to unravel, though, their lives will never be the same…

Kaelin needs just one night to let all of her inhibitions go away and do the wicked things with Tyler and Nick that she has been dreaming about for ten years.

This story had some truly memorable characters, to the point that I just do not know where to begin. Nick was the character that I think my heart went out to the most. It seemed as though everyone focused on Tyler’s antics and bad boy image, and Nick just kind of got lost in the mix on many occasions. Even when Tyler, Kaelin and Nick sleep together, the emotional attachment and fulfillment seemed to be mainly focused on Tyler and Kaelin. This forgotten perception really made me sympathize with Nick and made me want to give him a giant hug. Smoking causes blood vessel constriction, which bears upon the vascular system that leads to dissatisfied love making and his partner leaves him alone shop at drugshop viagra ordination for the rest of life.

Tyler is everything anyone can want in a bad boy. The author really did a great job portraying him as the person girls want, and men (including his father) do not like. As is the case with many bad boys, things are not always what they seem. While he creates his fair share of trouble, he also protects those he cares about even if it’s from himself and his antics. Tyler’s personality reminded me of so many bad boys I know. When you look beneath the surface, you see someone trying to live up to unrealistic expectations, and hiding who they really are.

Kaelin may be a good girl around town, but she is one naughty woman behind closed doors. Kaelin reminds me of the phrase “I want a lady in the streets and a freak in the bed.” She has some hidden desires that I do not believe anyone including her even knew existed. She has given of herself to so many people throughout her entire life, all she asked for was one night to have two men focus on her alone, to give her everything that she’s been waiting and yearning for way too long.

The plot in this story was just as extraordinary as the characters. From the wedding of Tyler’s sister, to the romance between the main characters, to a family torn – the author really incorporated everything. It made this story a very easy read, which seemed to make time fly. I was so enthralled by the storyline I quickly found myself at the end of the story and still wanting more.

It has been a while since I have found a story to truly entrance me and for that, I have to rate this story a 5 and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great romance novel with a little kink.

In a world where a werecat virus has changed society, Roan McKichan, a born infected and ex-cop, works as a private detective trying to solve crimes involving other infecteds.

Between his mutating virus and his rocky relationship with his artist boyfriend, Dylan, Roan has enough problems to solve without taking on other people’s, but that’s the nature of his work. Someone has to look into the case of the murdered trans woman, and if the perp is the dirty cop Roan suspects it is, the police are not the right people for the job.

But now Roan has a new obstacle to overcome: someone caught part of his transformation on video, and the media frenzy is making it hard to do his job. One case nets him a hockey team full of new friends. Another leads to an attempt on his life. And Roan’s hustler sidekick drags him on a quest for revenge. With his world and his body both in turmoil, Roan is finding it harder and harder to see the line between justice and vigilantism.

My long nails are toast. Infected: Shift had so many edge-of-your-seat scenes and action sequences paired with emotional suspense and drama, that I needed an outlet. I was out of chocolate so my nails paid the price from reading chapter after chapter of intelligent, gripping and sharp as a blade storytelling. Ms. Speed has cemented my continued fascination with Roan and his life’s challenges with this clever and well written tale full of mystery, murder and mayhem.

With the first mystery, I was treated to new characters that stirred the pot of romance and curiosity. The author put me on a see-saw of “will he or won’t he” which applies to three different potential aspects of Roan’s life. All of them were compelling and hands down the most emotional elements. As for the action, a reader gets walloped with lion action, hoodlum violence and police activity. It was an incredible ride.

Another reason to smile and giggle in appreciation is Ms. Speed’s use of movie and actor references. I adored the one about Judi Dench. After reading this tale, I might just take up watching hockey. The author created a wonderful slapstick moment, pun intended, for readers of this book. Scott and Tank and Grey Williams were delightful secondary characters and I enjoyed watching Roan meeting them and all the fun those boys got into. In fact, I had the best reading experience whenever Roan and the guys were together. It almost seemed as if the author had as much fun writing those chapters as I had reading them; there was something vibrant and alive that seemed to hum from the words.

Readers of the series know how hard it’s been for Roan since his husband, Paris, died. In this first installment, it gets a bit worse. I ached for the hero but at the same time felt he needed a swift kick. I enjoyed those weird dream sequences the author uses to help that along. It’s a pretty unique technique and it works incredibly well. Combine real life with his subconscious and Roan is forced to open his eyes and share a bit of his heart. That was an emotionally dramatic scene and well written.

The fun continued with the next story. It started off with an intense scene that means business and then it back tracked in time. I really enjoyed those hockey players and Ms. Speed has the best sense of how to maximize their effect on the plot and story line, providing pure entertainment. The bathroom scene could have been incredibly intense but the author inserted some action with great dialogue so that I giggled when the officer took the moron away. It was so well done with clear and vivid writing I could almost see the activity in my mind’s eye.

And Tank…what a brilliantly written character. Whenever he was on stage I laughed so hard I could hardly breathe. In this way, the body goes to dysfunctional manner and day by day, problems become online viagra order critical. MedicationSometimes, temporary impotence is caused because of insufficient blood deeprootsmag.org cheap viagra for women flow to the penis. Readers are going to get the biggest kick out him. He was interesting in the first story but in this one? He’s a scream. It’s a good thing that his character brought levity to the table because the second mystery was much more serious, gruesome and sad.

Once again, Roan is called in to investigate a person’s disappearance. This time the client has money, power and arrogance and the writing makes that clear. What also is made clear is the fact that money cannot buy happiness, peace, or a personality. Nor can it teach a person how to be a parent or a decent human being and in this case, I’m sure the client wishes it did. It also explores the old adage, ‘you reap what you sow’ in a very graphic and poignant manner.

Holden was a bit more in the background in the first installment although he certainly had his moment of stress and drama. It was a big moment, to be sure but the best/worst was yet to come. After reading this book, I have come to the conclusion that Holden and Roan are very similar in a lot of ways. Both feel deeply about those they care for, and both are jaded and cynical enough to get the job done no matter how messy, violent or questionable it might be. Both men have secrets on secrets and although a reader has the benefit of seeing through Roan’s point of view, I never feel like I come close to pinning Holden down. It makes his character all the more interesting and intriguing. They make a good team but I don’t believe we’ll be seeing them as a couple. They’re too messed up. Thank goodness for Dylan.

A reader finally has a bit more clarity about the status of Roan and Dylan’s relationship after reading Infected: Shift. I am glad to finally have more insight. The hockey guys were a nice touch to the event so it doesn’t spiral down into anything mushy. Which is good because Roan doesn’t do mushy anything. At least, not willingly.

I also enjoyed having Dee, Dropkick, Fiona and the other secondary characters from past novels pop in and out throughout this story. It gave a sense of community, continuity and connection and is one of the reasons why these books read so well. It allowed me to immerse myself in a world that has enough detail, dialogue and descriptions to inspire a bonding feeling with the imaginary world thatMs. Speed has created. Sometimes, the story is so gripping and twisted, I don’t want it to end. Roan and company are endlessly fascinating and never, ever boring.

Infected: Shift proves that Ms. Speed has an extraordinary talent for writing drama, suspense and tortured heroes with a level of skill that delivers quality stories again and again. This time around, the points of view shifts were not jarring but instead flowed well, were logical and well balanced, and the author kept a tight rein on them. There was an impressive balance of darkness, humor, self-depreciation and hope. There were also some shocking revelations and stunning new questions raised about being a virus child. I’m also happy about the continued relationship with Roan and Dylan. I enjoyed their repartee, and the growth shown throughout the chapters as well as how Roan is slowly opening up to the man he loves. He’s doing it at a snail’s pace, that’s for sure, but that’s our hero – stubborn. Anyone who is looking for an action filled mystery story can’t go wrong with Infected: Shift. There is nothing I didn’t like and no scene that came across as lame or ineffectual. It might be considered a standalone read as the mysteries are not carryovers from previous books but reading the previous stories it might help to understand the emotional drama and self-flagellation that Roan tends to excel at. In any event, this is a powerhouse type book and it’s one for my keeper shelves. Andrea Speed rocks!

Seattle, 1901. The race to win an electrical competition incites Professor Bradshaw’s obsession for invention in this sequel to A SPARK OF DEATH. The winner’s telephonic system will deliver music of the Seattle Grand Theater to homes throughout the city, and Bradshaw is confident he can win. But a missing peddler and child divert him, while the assassination of President McKinley drops Bradshaw and the entire nation into shock.

When Bradshaw discovers the peddler’s child may have witnessed a murder, he follows her trail below Yesler Way, plunging into a seedy underworld of bars and brothels. Frustrated by the police department’s apathy and caught between power struggles, he doesn’t know who to trust. Each step of his investigation entangles him deeper in crime and corruption until he realizes that to save the peddler’s child, he must transform his contest entry into a trap to catch a killer.

The Professor Bradshaw Mystery Series features Benjamin Bradshaw, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington. Bradshaw’s electrical forensic and investigative skills, combined with a keen understanding of human nature, bring the Seattle Police, and murder, frequently to his doorstep during the social and scientific turmoil of the early twentieth century.

Will Bradshaw’s obsession kill him before he solves the mystery?

I knew I was in for a real treat when I read the first sentence of Fatal Induction. “The first indication that Professor Benjamin Bradshaw’s life was about to plunge again into chaos appeared in the form of a flatulent horse eating Mrs. Prouty’s broad beans over the garden fence, its huge teeth tugging greedily at the vines.” Ms. Pajer’s excellent word choice allowed me to picture the scene clearly in my mind. With a smile on my face, I eagerly dove into the book and lost myself in Professor Bradshaw’s world.

I liked Benjamin Bradshaw immediately. At first, he seemed like the typical disheveled, forgetful professor with a brilliant mind and less than stellar social skills. However, underneath all that, Bradshaw is a man who truly cares not only for his friends and family, but all the people who live in his city. I absolutely loved the tender moments when Bradshaw would take a moment to look at his son and marvel at how much he’d grown. Bradshaw’s interactions with a young woman named Missouri also serve to reveal his softer side and add just a hint of romance to the story.

When a young girl goes missing after witnessing the murder of her father, Bradshaw immediately throws himself wholeheartedly into the task of finding her. While I admire his genuine concern and determination, this situation exposes a dangerous element of Bradshaw’s personality. Bradshaw has the tendency to obsess over any problem his mind latches onto, whether it’s experimenting with a new electrical invention or helping the police solve a crime. He works himself to the point of physical and mental exhaustion. Since Bradshaw is a single parent, I do wonder why he wouldn’t take better care of himself for the sake of his son, if not for himself. I also couldn’t help but wonder if Bradshaw’s exhaustion is completely due to overwork or if something a bit more serious is going on. Perhaps I’ll find out in future installments of this series.

In addition to creating a compelling main character, Ms. Pajer has sprinkled her book with a host of delightful secondary characters. Bradshaw’s son, Justin, is my favorite. In many ways, he’s a typical eight year old boy who loves to run around outside playing with frogs and getting into some innocent mischief. However, like his father, there’s much more to him than meets the eye. Justin is an intelligent and somewhat sensitive boy who has inherited his father’s caring nature. While Justin retains a childlike innocence, in some ways he demonstrates a maturity far beyond his years.

Ms. Pajer wove her mystery well and I was right about one of the people involved in the crime, but I didn’t know how this person had done it until the very end. I must admit I smacked myself in the forehead when everything was revealed because I had forgotten an important clue early on that would have allowed me to fit all the pieces together. Even though I wasn’t successful in solving the mystery before Bradshaw did, I certainly enjoyed the journey to the solution. I thought the conclusion was bittersweet. There are certainly elements contained in the final pages that are cause for celebration and others that make the heart ache a little. While I can’t say that I completely loved the ending, it did have a very realistic feel to it.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fatal Induction. While it’s the second book in a series about Professor Bradshaw, Ms. Pajer included enough background information throughout the story so seamlessly that I never felt lost. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great, historical mystery filled to the brim with interesting characters and suspense.

If Evie can’t pull it together, she’ll lose her position as Yearbook Photo Editor and suffer academic failure. Even worse, Evie risks losing Jordan, her secret crush. Despite a falling out, Evie never forgot Jordan. Now they are lab partners and the chemistry definitely sparks between them. But Evie’s supposed friend, Parvani, wants Jordan for herself. Parvani possesses a brimstone-hissing spell book. Soon the moon will be in the optimum phase for a binding love spell. To save Jordan, Evie must join forces with Salem, the school Goth. The clock is ticking. Can Evie get her mojo back in time to check this spell?

Wouldn’t it be great if it were possible to put a love spell on someone to make them fall for you? What if your best friend wants to put a love spell on the guy you have fallen for because she has a crush on him?

Evie O’Reilly has a big problem – her best friend Parvani Hyde-Smith wants Evie to help her cast a spell on Jordan Kent because Parvani has a huge crush on him. She’s totally unaware that Evie is beginning to have feelings for Jordan. Evie actually doesn’t realize it either, until things start to go wrong and it might be too late for her to make those feelings known.

Evie is a freshman at Jefferson High. Her father, Dash O’Reilly, was a famous photographer killed in action almost two years ago. Her mother makes greeting cards to pay the bills. Evie takes after her father, photographing events for the school yearbook where she’s the photo editor. She’s been friends with Jordan Kent since preschool. They even went to Disneyland together when they were little. Jordan is athletic, plays football, and is very smart. Then, when the Smash Heads (aka Jordan’s teammates Evan and Tommy) start bothering Evie, Jordan comes to her rescue. Unfortunately, misunderstandings and a jealous friend jeopardizes their growing relationship and Jordan comes down with a mysterious illness.

The supporting characters of Parvani, Zhù, Sarah (aka Salem), and Miss Ravenwood add interesting parts to the story. Parvani casts a spell even though she’s not fully aware of the inherent dangers. Zhù has a secret that Evie has to keep even though she’s not privy to all of it. Miss Ravenwood has links to Evie that Evie and Parvani stumble upon, changing Evie’s view of her past. The world seems to go out of control and Evie feels helpless to right all the wrongs.

Ms. Moon tells a wonderful, entrancing story that was a bit slow getting to the action, but that was necessary to show the effects of Dash O’Reilly’s death on his daughter. She was in shock at first and took a while to get back into her own life. It was worth the wait because then we were in for a rollercoaster of emotions with all that happens to Evie and her friends. The descriptions of Evie and her friends made me laugh because their actions and speech were so similar to teenagers who I know (and love). Then the feelings that Evie had for Jordan reminded me of how first love feels, giddy and sweet.

Spell Check is a great story for the young adult or the young at heart. I enjoyed the vicarious experience of falling in love, dealing with secrets, and working out best friend issues. Evie’s father dying young does punctuate the need for Evie to live life to the fullest and go after what she wants once she wakes up from her sorrow. It’s food for thought for the rest of us as we enjoy Evie’s spell binding adventure.

She struggles with the emotions of this outcome. And now, her world revolves around the last words of a friend; words that echo in her mind.

Annabel is a character I related to. She goes through so much in the duration of the story. Ahh, Trent. He’s a little rough around the edges. Not too happy about Annabel being there. Even more unhappy about the woman Annabel worked alongside in her career. Or will their explosive romantic attraction lead to disaster?

Along comes a handsome stranger on a dark and stormy night, carrying a cute little bundle of joy. What girl could resist this twosome?

Minna Westerfield was puzzled by the constant thunder and lightning storms that have been taking place all around her. Evan Valentine shows up with a wet coat wrapped around a cute little puppy, trying to find shelter after he rescued the critter. Minna tries to take care of both of them and feels sparks striking up between her and Evan. She soon finds out that he’s a wizard’s apprentice, but she hides her own secret from him (she’s also a wizard). She’s the daughter of a famous dragon racing jockey and a mom who recently passed away. Also, Minna’s parents turned down a scholarship for her that would have allowed her to attend the prestigious Aldesbury School of Magic. Little does she know that Evan, the wizard Thaddeus Bartholomew, and even her own mother have secrets that will soon be revealed.

Minna misses her mother and is living with her father who’s permanently retired from dragon racing due to injuries. She longs for a happy family life that never will be again. Evan grew up poor, but fortuitously landed a scholarship to attend Aldesbury School of Magic. Evan is working hard to master all the skills of being a wizard from Thaddeus who’s a kind, but firm teacher. The reason for the thunder and lightning storms causes Minna to join forces with Evan and Thaddeus in a parallel universe to save the world.

This story is a wonderful concoction of fantasy and romance! I could very well imagine this story as a movie. It has all the elements that I enjoy reading about and also watching. The plot was engaging right from the beginning, with narrative that was interesting and descriptively painted a picture for me of all that was happening to Minna, Evan, and Thaddeus. I loved the creative, magical world that Ms. Rogers put her characters in and I would like to see all of that on the big screen. I would have enjoyed finding out more about Evan’s life before he met Minna, in addition to Minna’s life. This was a wonderful young adult fantasy adventure I had a hard time putting down once I started reading it.

For a grand, magical adventure with a sweet romance, be sure to get your copy of Minna & The Valentine! I hope S.G. Rogers writes more wonderful stories, because I will be looking for them.

Regency England: rakes and radicals, poets and patriots, the hardy and the hedonistic. What is a gentleman’s daughter to do in these changing and challenging times? She will skirmish for love, ever polite, though sometimes her white kid gloves must come off. Cecilia Wilcox’s frustrating and unsettling encounter with a handsome stranger is soon pushed from her thoughts by the appearance of her first love, the rakish, elegant best friend of her older brother. Disapproving of her daughter’s choice, her domineering mother takes her to London to find a husband. She introduces Cecilia to a charming rogue and the stranger, whose commanding and inscrutable presence both disturbs and captivates her. Amidst London balls and country house parties, Cecilia must wade through false assumptions, betrayals, and revenge to reclaim the man she loves.

Life is not all “breezes and birdsong” for Cecilia Wilcox, although, at the start of the nineteenth century-era novel, it does seem like it must be. She’s grown up in the country and looks forward to a visit to London. Her home is particularly lovely – and lovingly described – as a largely “luminescent landscape.” Best friend (and soon relative) Polly is admirable, and reveals to us that this is not the typically-envisioned wealthy family, but a small village family, with likely the smaller income to match.

To my delight, this story – taking place in a time and place so oft used as setting – is set in a slightly different world from the usual realm of scheming blue bloods. There are drawing rooms, and even balls. Of course, Cecilia has the typical challenge of the day: Marriage. And it’s not like there aren’t possibilities – but the strongest possibilities are not exactly the ones we find ourselves hoping for.

Cecilia’s days are hardly spent ordering around the servants, and the people she knows have good, honest goals. When ‘Ret comes so charmingly into the picture… well it is as a disappointment at first. Surely, it cannot be that this man, no matter how attractive, is meant for Cecilia? Is he too much of a gentleman, older, more formal…and with none of the fun prospects I might hope she’d find. And yet then there is that about him that made me wonder. Is he more daring than I might have believed? Or, perhaps, somehow worse…Does he have a rather mean streak? Whether or not ‘Ret is the man I suspected – or perhaps feared – keeps me guessing. Then there is the dashing Thornhill, and other potential suitors, which makes this a page-turner. The marriage-market is stressful and unpredictable and so much fun.

Conversational style reflects the era, is mostly charming, and moves the story right along. However, back story occasionally slows the pace – some of the past interactions of characters might have been better presented in conversation. Family issues, like Cecelia getting along with her Mom, and the comments of Mrs. Partridge and others, are all so incredibly real and believable, you will feel the same frustration many a young woman has with the opinions of the older! The ‘rules of society’ can seem so ancient, and pointless!

Surprise features highly here, too: there are a number of twists and turns that are completely unpredictable and all the better for that.

Overall, this entire work is so very nicely presented.  Ms. Williams weaves words into enchanting prose paintings, until every reader will imagine wandering arm-in-arm with a best friend, through fields full of blossoms. This is not always the fastest-paced novel, but savoring the moments can be wonderful, too. Historical romance readers should put this right at the top of their list.

Still battling the alcoholism that got him fired, ex-fire chief Devin Bane rises above the thick clouds for an interview in Seattle and the promise of a better life.

Packing up his carry-on items for their descent into the city, Devin is blinded by a distant flash, followed by the screams and chaos of a crash landing.

Outside the plane’s wreckage, a new horror surrounds him. Seattle’s iconic skyline is gone.

Searching for answers as he flees through the ruins, Devin and a handful of survivors are surrounded by the most primitive side of human nature. Plunged into the darkness of a broken society, their tattered souls are each tested by the nightmares they face. Even if Devin can escape the city, a far worse danger now blocks his path back home . . . Back to his family — and the dawning of a changed world.

What would you do if nuclear war became a reality and your city was destroyed?

This author impressed me. I have read several “end of the world” books. There’s only so much you can do with the storyline. Mr. Johnson’s strength lies in his character building ability. From the first few pages, you begin to feel the survivor’s fears, worry and frustration. No one is a super hero. They are all common folks who had their own family problems and they have no desire to have to lead anyone or do anything except survive. This is a very realistic reaction to something you have no way of anticipating and lack understanding on how it could have happened to you.

Devin is a firefighter looking for a new job. He has the misfortune of being on a plane that crashes and involuntarily becomes a leader. Mr. Johnston has just made him an average man who had a drinking problem and is unsure of where he is in his life. The author gives Devin a mixed bag of survivors who are all trying to adjust to the loved ones they’ve lost and what might be left behind after the explosions.

You feel the long walk, the fear that convicts will attack you, their hunger and thirst, and you also understand why they don’t really trust each other. This gives the story more impact and keeps you reading to see what the author throws at them next. It’s realistic; not everyone makes it. That makes the story have a ring of truth.

The words flow well, the horrors of war feel real, and I cried at the death of one character. Mr. Johnson grabbed my attention and kept it through the whole book. If the thought of war on our soil hasn’t touched you yet, this story will make you a believer. Why not grab a copy and settle in for a story that will chill you and yet give you hope for the future?
