Children’s book writer Jacob Bailey has retreated to Scotland to die in solitude, tormented by the loss of the love of his life, and wishing for an end to his suffering. In his remote house on the cliff he is visited by an angel, with history and pain of his own, a being who brings far more to Jacob’s final days than he could ever hope for.

A surrealistic story that highlights the beauty of love. Warning, this is a bittersweet tale. It is not something for the faint of heart. It explores tough, painful issues and may well raise questions within the reader that are not always comfortable. I loved that aspect of it. There’s a touch of the epic within this story, for it portrays something epic, how a bright star slowly dims and comes to acceptance.

Jacob is the central focus of I Am Fallen and he is a very immediate character. I felt myself immediately connected to him and sympathetic to him without feeling pity. He’s so unflinchingly honest in his appraisal of himself and his regrets in his life. There is no part of this story that came across as soapbox sentimental. It was unique and refreshing, raw and honest.

If love angst mixed with moments of joy, you might very well enjoy this story and be taken into another place and time. Ms. Blackwell captures the experience of being chronically ill so much that what the body is capable of focusing on and perceiving becomes numbed out. Yet still being human and having yearning and feelings that render one feeling powerless, weak, beyond vulnerable. There’s a sharpness given to the moments of joy and greater awareness that Jacob experiences. He gives freely of his newfound wisdom to those around him.

This is a love story above all else. Jacob and Lucifer share a love that transcends the physical realm. They take strength from each other, they learn from each other. They grow. Lucifer’s character was well done. He contains all the passion and contradictions one would expect a fallen angel to have. I Am Fallen has a breathtaking happy ending but it is not the typical one. I loved it.

I Am Fallen really shows the versatility and depth that Ms. Blackwell possesses as an author. She tackled the tricky issues of sickness, death, regret and religion and wove them into a masterpiece of transcendence and love.

Her submission can heal him. His dominance can free her.

Southern Arcana, Book 5

Sera Sinclaire is a New Orleans rarity: a submissive coyote trapped in a town overrun by dominant shapeshifters. Worse, she lacks the willpower to deny the alphas-in-shining-armor who need her soothing presence, even when their protectiveness threatens to crush her hard-won self-reliance.

The only shifter she doesn’t want to push away is Julio Mendoza, a wolf so dominant he’s earned a place on the Southeast council.

Julio doesn’t have the luxury of indulging in the vacation his psychic shrink insists he needs. He can’t turn his back on responsibilities he’s beginning to wish he’d never shouldered. When an obsessive ex endangers Sera, though, instinct drives him to get her out of town. Watching her come to life outside the city makes him feel like he’s finally done something right, and her touch ignites desire he doesn’t want to ignore.

But soon, lighthearted flirting becomes a dangerous game of seduction, where every day spent falling into each other is another day avoiding the truth. Sera’s ex isn’t the only one who’d disapprove of their relationship. There are wolves who would kill to get Sera out of Julio’s life—starting with his own blood kin.

Sera Sinclaire is happy with where she is in life. She likes her job, loves her friends, and hopes she never has to see her ex-husband, Josh, again now that she lives far from his Arkansas home. She loves New Orleans, even if she is a bit of a rarity there: a submissive coyote shifter in a town filled with dominant wolves. Most of them, she just ignores, but one man keeps her on her toes. Julio Mendoza is the hottest thing she has ever seen, and she wouldn’t mind getting to know him better.

When her obsessive ex shows up in New Orleans, Julio convinces Sera to take a bit of a vacation, and he decides to combine business with a bit of pleasure and join her. Once they are out of town, both are able to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Harmless flirting becomes something more, and the attraction between them grows. Julio has pack business to attend to, and Sera worries that trouble could arise from her being along, since most wolves see her as less than worthy. But there is trouble around every corner, and Sera proves to Julio and to the others that being submissive doesn’t mean she can’t take care of herself. And Julio discovers that dominant doesn’t have to be bad with the right partner. Can these two learn to accept the growing feelings between them? When danger threatens, can Julio get to Sera in time to stop Josh and protect what he has come to realize is his mate? Will the wolves accept Sera as a wolf’s woman, or will trouble erupt?

Impulse is the fifth book in Moira Rogers’ Southern Arcana series, and is my favorite to date. This one takes the characters out of the familiar locale of New Orleans, and on a road trip across the south. I like the interaction between Sera and Julio, at times light and teasing, two people getting better acquainted while enjoying the trip. I liked watching as they began to sense that each of them wanted more than a light flirtation. I love the Southern Arcana world, and enjoyed this expansion of it to other areas.

Sera Sinclaire is strong, determined and ready to fight for the life she wants. She knows the wolves see her as weak; at times even she thinks she is. But with Julio, she learns that being submissive isn’t necessarily a bad thing, that it doesn’t make her a pushover. I like Sera’s inner strength, and her ability to make friends and soothe hurt feelings.

Julio Mendoza is strong, in both his magic and in sheer physical strength. He’s handsome, sexy and protective of those he cares for. With Sera, he learns that he can let go for a while and just let her be in charge when it’s the one thing she needs. I liked seeing him let her have her victories, and listening to her ideas without vetoing them out of hand. I enjoyed watching as he fell for her and discovered she wanted the same things he did.

This wouldn’t be a Moira Rogers book without the steamy and passionate romance, and there are a couple of absolutely toe curling scenes in this one. There is also non-stop action, danger, treachery and a bit of family betrayal to be dealt with. There are lots of new characters along the road trip, and some I would enjoy meeting again in the future. I enjoyed seeing how Sera and Julio were able to bring attention to the problems in the area outside of New Orleans, and it was fun seeing some of the characters from past books step up to help as well.

Do these two beat the odds for a happy ever after? I’m not saying, but I will warn you to stay by the air conditioner, this one is a scorcher.

When her new neighbor’s loud music continues to interrupt her bubble baths, Marissa Coldtrail decides enough is enough. It’s time to teach the metalhead a lesson. It’s time to put the infuriating man in his place once and for all. Then she sees him—and wonders just how to get the hunk in bed without losing her cool.

Brian Levine is amused by the dark beauty from next door. Her voluptuous body makes him want to turn the volume down, but he’s never been that much of the agreeing type. Still, there are other ways to resolve a friendly neighborly dispute.

Like finding a way to cool her vicious temper. Like showing her that bubble baths can’t please like metalheads can…

Marissa Coldtrail loved shedding the days stress by sinking into a nice hot bubble bath; there, all her troubles would disappear. With candles casting a soft light and the sweet sounds of Luther Vandross playing, Marissa would simply lay back, close her eyes and drift into a state of bliss. That was until her next door neighbor decided to blast heavy metal music disturbing her bliss by rattling the walls. When yelling and banging on the walls doesn’t help, Marissa decides it’s time to meet the person who ruined her relaxation.

Brian Levine, fresh from the Midwest, used heavy metal music to relax after a hard day’s work. He had no idea his choice of music was disturbing anyone until Marissa cornered him in the hallway and told him that his music was ‘loud, foul and obnoxious’. He thought it was amusing that she was upset because he had interrupted her bubble bath with his music, he was less amused when she started calling him Metalhead.

It was inevitable that Marissa and Brian were going to end up together despite their differences, which made for a very enjoyable read. It had this reader smiling throughout and it was fun to see how Marissa, who had never dated anyone who was not the Denzel Washington type, became so drawn to Brian.

Marissa and Brian were charming. I especially enjoyed watching Marissa when she tried to explain to Brian how important a bubble bath is to the well being of a person. Brian’s confusion was pretty typical of a man when she proceeds to give him bubble bath facts; so is his solution to the dilemma.

The way these two characters were presented was so appealing that I wished this novella was more than 35 pages. This reader became engrossed in their love affair and was chuckling as Marissa tried to introduce Brian to soul music and he tried to get her to listen to Led Zeppelin. Bubble Bath Delight was a fun read which I’m sure will appeal too many, pick up a copy and see for yourself.

On the run from her abusive husband Catherine has learned not to trust anyone—especially no one in the BDSM lifestyle. But will she be able to resist a powerful dom like Jon?

Catherine has been on the run from her abusive husband and former dom for years. Unable to trust anyone, she has also left the BDSM lifestyle. Or so she thought, until a strange but powerful voice told her to get naked and kneel right there, in the middle of her office, after hours. Will she give in to her sweet urges and submit to a strange dom if only for one night? Can she trust her own instincts, which had let her into a disastrous marriage?

Jon has been a dom for years, but recently he has become bored with the lifestyle—until he sees Catherine kneeling in her office stark naked and in a beautifully submissive position. Jon knows he has to have her. Can he convince the gorgeous submissive to trust him? And will he be able to keep her safe from the demons in her past?

Note to all Doms: Be careful of where you practice your big bad “Dom” voice, you never know who is listening to you.

That’s how this story starts. A colleague of Catherine’s is in his office, practicing his voice commands for a girlfriend who needs a strong hand in the bedroom. Something about the voice triggers Catherine’s former inner sub and she can’t help but follow the commands. And what is a person to do when you accidentally master your boss? Well, you call your mentor of course!

And here comes Jon to save the day. Kind of. The moment Jon lays eyes on the beautiful sub kneeling naked in her office, he’s hooked. Instant attraction and respect blooms within Jon because of Catherine’s discipline as a submissive. Deciding he had to have her, she agrees to play out a scene with him. By the end, Jon realizes one brief moment is not enough with her and she has revived his outlook on the lifestyle.

Although she’s out of the lifestyle, there is something about this mysterious Dom that has Catherine all a flutter and she decides to give in to her own needs. Over the course of their first evening together you find out that Catherine is on the run from her former Dom who happens to be her abusive husband. But Jon shows her how a true, caring D/s relationship is supposed to be and she can’t help but thrive in the gentle hands of this new man.

This is a short, sweet and very sexy story. I know you’re thinking, how can it be sweet and sexy? Well it’s true! Mina Dorian wrote a lovely story about healing and love through the outlet of a BDSM lifestyle. Both characters are equally strong in their own way, Catherine because of her jerk of an ex, and Jon is very confident with himself. I do wish we had learned more about Jon and how he got to the point of being bored with the lifestyle. The story was very fast paced making this a quick read, but I felt there needed to be a little something extra. Maybe a little more insight into the couples building feelings and relationship.

But the sexiness smoldered the pages and the sweetness will melt your heart. So if you like BDSM, sexy Doms, sweet subs and the bad guy gets it in the end, then look no further!

Getting The Call x 2

Thanks for having me back on Long And Short Reviews!

It’s been four years since I got The Call. And I still remember it as if it were yesterday.

Luckily, I’d had an inkling that it was coming. I mean, I’d been sitting with Deb Werksman (my editor at Sourcebooks) at a function in June and she’d been asking me to submit In Over Her Head to her. (I couldn’t because it had been in an online contest.) At that luncheon, I told her she had it in her email and she was very excited.

But then another woman at the table asked me if In Over Her Head wasn’t part of a series? (It helps to have a like-minded writer friend who’d fed me this line JUST so I could answer it in Deb’s presence. No, we didn’t plan it beforehand; she told me about it afterwards.) When I said that it was part of a series, Deb got VERY interested and demanded that I send her the proposals for the other two books as soon as possible.

Needless to say, I was very busy when I got home from that luncheon. Off went the proposals and within a month of that luncheon, I got an email from Deb saying she was taking the series into the editorial meeting. The meeting was Tuesday at 2 pm.

Now I had a timeline. You know what? I don’t know that knowing beforehand was actually a good thing because I could barely concentrate at work. Or at home. I couldn’t sleep.

Tuesday arrived. I left work at 2 (normal time) and couldn’t face going home to sit in front of my laptop and wait. I wasn’t going to get any writing done. So I went shopping.

Now, if you know me, you know that I LOATHE shopping. I still have no idea why I chose that activity that day. None at all. It’s completely out of character. But I went.

So, I finished my shopping at about 4 pm, got back in the car, figuring I could go home and check my email. I hadn’t gotten a phone call, so obviously it wasn’t good news.

I went to pull out of my parking spot and another car practically backed into the front of my car. I was a nervous wreck anyway; I didn’t need this. I was about to lay on the horn when I saw his/her license plate.

MER4EVR

I kid you not. I mean, here I was waiting on pins and needles about a merman story, and THIS is the person who almost hits me. I’m a big believer in the Universe talking to you… I listened.

For some reason, I glanced at the clock as the MER car drove off. No clue why, I just did.

I drove home, thinking maybe I was going to get good news after all.

I fired up the laptop, checked my email and lo-and-behold, there was an email from Deb. Subject line: We want to publish you!!!

The time on the email? The EXACT time I’d looked at the clock after the near-accident with MER car.

God’s honest truth, the whole story. Sometimes things are just meant to be.

Flash forward to the sale of my second series to Deb. We’d talked about finishing up the other2 books in the Mer series (Marianna and Pearl’s stories), when my publisher, director of sales, Deb and I were standing around at the Sourcebooks booth at BEA, and the director of sales asked me what was next. I mentioned the other Mer books but then said I had an idea for a genie series, something along the lines of “I Dream of Genie meets Indiana Jones.” Everyone’s mouths dropped open with a collective, “awwww,” and Deb said, “Write it. That’s what we want.”

Voila! The Bottled Magic series was born. And the final one in that series hits the shelves this month: Magic Gone Wild. It’s the story of a not-quite-got-it genie named Vana. Short for Nirvana Aphrodite, she knows it’s a lot to live up to. And, sadly, she doesn’t. Her magic is screwy, she ruined her previous master’s reputation, and now she’s put the new one, Zane Harrison, at risk for the same sort of ridicule and rumor. But then the Fates step in (literally) and, well, it is a romance after all.

Here’s an excerpt from Magic Gone Wild:

Zane Harrison stared at the woman on the other end of the scimitar and tried to remember exactly how he’d come to have a sword pointed at his chest.

“Holy smokes!” The woman sucked in a breath, clamped a hand over her mouth, and dropped the sword.

Right on top of him.

The pommel conked him on the head and the blade spun around, almost taking off his nose.

Zane leapt to his feet and grabbed the sword in one movement, the hours spent in football training drills thankfully having real-world application, although he’d never imagined it’d be to defend his life during a trip back to his ancestral home in the middle of nowhere.

Then he got a good look at the woman. A more unlikely assassin he’d never seen. Hand-to-hand combat was not the ideal way to handle this situation; hand to mouth was. Or rather, mouth to mouth.

The woman was gorgeous. Movie-star gorgeous. Playmate gorgeous. Even in a fencer’s outfit—which was about as asexual as you could get—with curves straight out of his most vivid erotic fantasy, eyes the shimmering silvery-gray color of the sky before a storm that promised every bit as much of a wild ride, and hair the color of a mink that Zane wanted to sink his fingers into and never let go, the woman was absolutely stunning. And he was most definitely stunned. But not only by her looks.

“Ungaro,” she muttered. “Not en garde.” She shook her head, mumbled something else, then looked up at him. “Good day, um…?”

Zane would hate to see what she called a bad day if a good one was ending up on the wrong end of a sword. “Who are you, and what the hell is this?” He shook the sword.

She licked her lips—more centerfold fodder. They were plump and pink and now wet.

Hmmm, maybe it was a good day.

“I’m Vana, and that’s a scimitar.” Her expression was crestfallen and her sigh heartbroken. “I couldn’t even manage a rapier.”

Which made about as much sense as anything else.

Gabe MacGowan a sexy, brooding, guilt-ridden widower and father to mischievous seven-yearold Jake is the proprietor of Odin’s Thumb Inn and Pub in a misty Scottish seaside village. He decides to sell the inn and move, not only to give his son a more stable environment, but to escape the ghosts who haunt him in particular his dead wife. Gabe hires Allie Morgan, an easy-going and fun-loving American, to oust the spirits who are chasing away potential buyers. Odin’s Thumb is bustling with frightened tourists, quirky residents of the village, and dodgy yet lovable apparitions including the ghost of a sea captain who fancies Allie. Allie knows she can help Gabe chase away his own ghosts, but can she help him rediscover life and love?

Ghostly chaperones, sexy Scottish Highlanders, and a terrified inn keeper keep an intrepid American woman on her toes and test her sense of humor while leading her on a path of discovery that will change her life. MacGowan’s Ghost has so much to offer a reader with its richness of characters, dialogue and scenery, not to mention a sensual build up that keeps the emotional tension taunt, that it’s a book a romance reader can visit again and again.

First off, there are the ghosts. The whole plot revolves around them and they do a fine job of keeping the heroine, Allie, from doing what she was hired to do. In fact, they make a counter offer. It’s adorable how she not only understands them but eventually counts them as friends. How can ghosts be friends?

Ms. Miles explored that to my satisfaction and amazement. So much history, love and compassion surrounded them that I sometimes forgot they were ghosts. I felt really bad for one of them because I think he fell in love, but it couldn’t ever be realized. Poor guy, he knew it too but that didn’t stop him from doing certain things. I respected him all the more for it. Authors work magic; I wish Ms. Miles could someday work it for him.

The man who does benefit from love is the hero, Gabe. Actually, the truer phrasing would be that he eventually benefits from love. The author put him through the wringer emotionally and he has to deal with some very unpleasant things from his past before he can truly live for the future. It starts off innocuous enough but eventually he’s faced with an evil he has no idea how to handle. Fear rules him for a lot of the story and a reader will find out why. It was a very powerful plot conflict, and effective. In spite of that drama, he is a wonderful, manly and seductive man. I enjoyed learning about him, how he views his home, family and village. I also liked how completely Allie bowled him over and made this competent and virile man so tongue tied, he could only stare. Ms. Miles did a wonderful job of describing his eyes. I was hard pressed to decide which was the sexiest part of Gabe MacGowan, I liked everything about him.

Jake is Gabe’s son and he’s another contributor that affects Allie’s decision making. I liked how the author utilized the young and vibrant character because it brought more depth of emotion to the telling of the tale. Throw in a doting aunt and a loving mother and grandmother, toss in an exuberant brother and pesky prospective buyers for the inn, and a reader has a full stage of personalities to be charmed and entertained by.

Speaking of secondary characters, I had no idea that Ms. Miles had written other paranormal romance stories. When I met Gabe’s neighbors, I was agog. How did I miss more great sexy Highlander stories? I have no idea if it was intentional or not but the author set up an awesome hook for investigating her back list and I assure you, I’m going to. They were hot!

As for Allie, the heroine, she’s a peach. She’s presents as a chipper, optimistic and caring individual that refuses to see or speak ill of anyone. She is charming, delightful, cooks well and has the serious hots for Gabe. At first she comes across as too perfect. As Gabe and a reader get to know her, small tidbits of darkness start to show up. Eventually, I found out how she came to be the way she was. It was horrific, scary and totally fascinating. Ms. Miles has a great imagination and this book benefited from its genius. There is a lot more to Allie Morgan than just an effective ghost mediator/interpreter/ouster.

As much as I adored this book and stayed riveted to the pages until the late evening hours, there was something that made me snort. I liked Gabe’s eyes, and I mentioned that earlier. This is an extremely sensual romance that only became spicy at one point or moment in the book. It was mostly build-up and teases. One technique that was over used was the stare or eye-lock between Gabe and Allie. It got to be sort of freakish because it was used so much. I understood the author’s intention and in the beginning it worked like a charm. After awhile, though, his staring made me uncomfortable, like he was a vampire working woo-woo. Fortunately, there were many more wonderful techniques and descriptions that pushed my happy buttons and it all worked out.

I’d be lax if I didn’t mention the humor. This book was loaded with it. There are plenty of opportunities for a reader to giggle, chuckle, groan or throw their hands up in exasperation every time Drew put in his two cents, which was often and much to Gabe and Allie’s consternation. For me, it was fun.

MacGowan’s Ghost is a wonderful read with plenty to keep a fan of romance basking in its sensual glow. The characters are endearing, well rounded and entertaining. The plot was intricate and woven well throughout the tale and the relationship between Gabe and Allie was everything I could have wanted. I enjoyed the dialogue and the clever schemes the author thought up to deter the sale of the inn. The happy ever after is at first touching, bittersweet yet full of hope and promise. The final moments that sealed their happiness was what I’d been wanting and waiting for, for so many chapters in the book, and it was a relief to see it realized. Ms. Miles delivered on the promise of a delightful love story and I couldn’t be happier. If readers haven’t discovered the talents of this author, they’re missing out. Obviously, I was, but no longer. I like this author’s style.

What the bottle from Aldebaran held was not wine, but the memories of his lost love.

Broken-hearted and alone, a retired Shakespearean actor sifts through the possessions of his dead love in a desperate attempt to keep his dreams of her alive. The discovery of a strange bottle containing the liquescent record of another human being—memories, feelings, experiences—gives Boris hope that another such bottle exists; one that contains the distilled essence of his lost Année. A desperate quest to posses her last thoughts will wrench him away from everything he has ever known to an alien world beyond the stars, where the human soul can be bottled, stored—and savored.

One of the most frustrating things about grieving the loss of a loved one is the finality of death. Over time I’ve forgotten small details about my deceased friends and family members- the sound of their laughter, for example, or what it felt like to slip into old conversational patterns with them. What if this didn’t have to occur, though? How would the act of grieving change if it was possible to bottle the essence of a human being and reawaken all of those seemingly inconsequential memories?

The nostalgia in Remember Me drapes over the narrative like a warm embrace. More than anything Boris wishes he could have more time with his Année. Boris’ sorrow is nuanced and at times comes out in surprising ways. I wasn’t expecting to sympathize with his experiences so deeply but this story followed the emotional roller coaster of grief so well that more than once I felt as if I was walking in Boris’ shadow.

In the beginning I wished readers could know more about what Boris and Année’s lives were like before her death. One scene made me wonder if Boris’s personality and habits changed dramatically after Année’s death. In a longer piece it would have made sense to explore this possibility in greater detail but perhaps a sequel will be written one day to explore Boris’s character in greater detail! The ending certainly lends itself to this possibility.

Remember Me is one of the most realistic snapshots of grief I have ever read. It’s a difficult experience to capture especially in the short story format but Ms. Bergmann did a beautiful job recreating the messy, sometimes complicated process of mourning.

Mike has watched Lynda for months. He wants her. He’s asked her out several times only to be told “no.” Her reasoning baffles him; he sees no problem with her being eighteen years his senior. He doesn’t believe it’s anybody’s business that they work together. If she would simply give him a chance, he could show her exactly how much fun they could have.

Lynda has done everything within her power to discourage Mike’s attraction to her. He’s idealistic. However she resides in the real world, and at forty, she has certainly learned a few things. To top it off, she’s his boss, and she can’t keep avoiding him. Her only option is to nip his growing infatuation in the bud. She simply has to figure out how to do that when she wants him as much as he desires her. All things considered, she has her work cut out for her.

Sex Oughta Be Luscious was one of those tales that had you smiling from beginning to end.

Mike works as a stock boy for the Just A Buck store. He, along with his co-worker James, have a serious crush on their supervisor Lynda Chambers. Too bad there’s a No Fraternization rule between staff and management that Lynda likes to repeatedly bring up. There’s also the small matter of their age difference. Lynda was forty and Mike only twenty-two. How could he get her to see him as a potential lover?

Lynda Chambers knew that Mike had a serious crush on her, but he was just too young for her. She has a son older than him, for goodness sake. Lynda was flattered by Mike’s attention and it didn’t hurt that he was gorgeous, but dare she take that step and go against what she knew was right?

I knew that somehow these two would get together, and it was fun to see the events that took place that changed Lynda’s mind. The banter between the characters was light and humorous which made me wish Sex Oughta Be Luscious was longer. Lynda and Mike had nothing in common, but the chemistry between them was evident. This reader couldn’t wait to see the fireworks that I knew would happen when these two got together. Sex Oughta Be Luscious was a fun read that I would enjoy seeing put into a longer version to really give Lynda and Mike a chance to develop their relationship. On the eve of his annual medical, Darcy Reed visits his favorite club to calm his nerves. He wasn’t looking for love but finds more than he expected in the arms of his physician Dr Sheridan Scott.

Getting up close and personal is not what people expect when they go for their annual medical, but Darcy Reed has to try hard not to enjoy it too much. He has a thing for doctors and this year his medical is about to get interesting.

On the eve of his medical, he visits his favorite club in search of the mind-numbing release only alcohol can bring. Instead, he meets the enigmatic Sheridan Scott.

The chance encounter is only the beginning. Sheridan is a doctor and Darcy is about to get more than he bargained for when he goes for his physical. Darcy hasn’t had much luck in love. Will Sheridan be just what the doctor ordered?

A doctor and a police officer walk into a bar, and when they leave their lives are changed forever. Well, maybe he’s not a cop but a tech specialist for the police, but he’s still close enough for me. Either way two sexy men in uniforms create some wickedly good pictures in my mind.

Darcy seems to be the hopeless romantic type that I hear about, but never actually meet. I like to think they’re out there, but they’re very illusive. His shaky past relationship left him with little hope of finding Mr. Right. While I liked Darcy’s chaste lifestyle, I wish I could have learned a bit more about his relationships. Part of me questions if his virtue was maintained just because of his hopeless romantic behavior or his past lover’s thoughtless attitude towards him. Either way it made a wonderful man just waiting for Dr. Scott to come and claim him as his own.

Dr. Sheridan Scott is everything Darcy needs and wants. I love how he seems to anticipate Darcy’s needs and is willing to meet them all the way. One thing I did question was in the beginning he seemed to be just enjoying life and looking for a quick hookup, but that quickly changes when he meets Darcy. I would have liked to have seen a bit more to understand why he felt the need to seek something more permanent from Darcy. However, I will say I would have done the same in his position.

The plot of this story is based around the relationship development of Darcy and Sheridan. I was completely caught up in the relationship from beginning to end which made this a very easy read. The story moves at a brisk and comfortable pace, the pages just seemed to fly by, I finshed and was surprised I had read over a hundred pages so quickly. This is a story I would recommend to anyone who loves a romance story with an erotic twist.

The Secrets of Writing
By
Cynthia Vespia

Recently, I’ve been asked the same question by a few different people. How do you write a book? These folks are anxious to get started on their own work and what they essentially want to know is the “secret” to writing and publishing. There’s no secret, no magic formula. I usually wind up telling them to write the book first and worry about the rest later. Without a story on the page you really have nowhere else to go. You can’t very well pitch an agent or publisher with a blank page, can you? I know someone out there is saying “Yes, it is called a proposal” but that’s more of a non-fiction business practice. I’m in the business of fiction and with fiction you have to have a finished manuscript.

Now back to that secret formula. I know most authors sometimes wish there was a magic pill you could take like Bradley Cooper had in the movie Limitless. That way you could harness your writing powers without all the distractions of day-to-day living and get that novel finished in record time. But it is in daily life where you get your best nuggets of writing.

This is especially true in character development. I love creating my characters, it juices me. This is the first thing I do after getting a spark of an idea. And I like to keep my characters based in reality, “warts and all” as they say. This means keeping little flaws and mannerisms that suit the character and give them more dimensions.

For instance, in my new suspense novel SINS AND VIRTUES I have a complex and unique hostage situation made even more complex and unique because of the characters themselves. First, I flipped the script and made a woman take a man hostage. Usually it is the other way around. But in Sam Mitchell, she is volatile and ready to snap based on years with an abusive husband and an extended stay in a maximum security prison. An example comes from a scene where Sam speaks to Ben Haskins, her captive:

“Are there any other weapons in this house?”

“No.” His answer was blunt and spoken too fast. She nudged him with her knee so that he would look up at her. When he didn’t budge she had to squat before him to take in his eyes.

“If you’re lying to me I’ll blow you away, got it?”

“Did you just wake up this morning and decide to ruin a man’s life?”

“I’m a woman, it’s what we live for.”

“You’re just an angry little girl, aren’t you?”

His defiance of her was shocking. She turned her attentions now to the knife. Taking it from atop the mantle she twisted it in her grip.

“I should gash out your eyes for that remark.”

“I have no doubt that you would.”

“Then don’t speak again.”

“It’s just that for whatever reason I was feeling a certain amount of compassion for you.” He’d been avoiding her gaze as if searching for some kind of revelation at the back of his mind. Now he turned back to her and it made Sam jump. “I feel like a fool. You’re nothing but a criminal. You don’t deserve compassion.”

He’d gotten her juice up and she was going to let him know about it. A swift back hand brought quick crimson to his lips.

“You don’t know the first thing about me,” she shouted. “You sit here in this fancy cabin living the most mundane existence I’ve ever seen and you dare to pass judgment on me? You don’t know anything, buddy.”

So within the dialogue you can create tension and build your characters just by the few words they speak. It’s fun, it’s one of the reasons I love writing so much.

Anyone out there who wants to write a book and doesn’t know where to begin…just start with an idea and a blank page. Learn the rules of writing, for sure. But then take them, and break them, and make them your own. When you cast away all your inhibitions and just tell whatever story you want to tell that’s when magic happens.
