Dixie wanted out of the daily rut and a night to reconnect with her husband. What she got went far beyond her wildest dreams. Who knew a Tuesday night could be so white hot?

Some wishes really do come true. Pearls and a hot evening of unexpected surprises is just what Dixie is about to experience.

Those of us that are married often wonder just how much our husbands really listen to what we are saying. They make non-committal noises, change the channel and we are often left to our own fantasies between the pages of a book. Our main character Dixie in Make Me is in the same fix. She is having a crappy day and all of a sudden there is a present waiting for her that will change her day completely. Am I going to tell you what it is? Heck no. Why spoil the suspense? Suffice it to say that these seventeen short pages are filled with many thrills and spankable chills. Delicious.

Overall, the book was a fast lunch break read that I devoured like a bar of dark chocolate. Dixie was a character I could relate to and when her wishes came true, I found myself rooting for her completely. Zeke was a hunk of a hubby that actually listened to his wife’s secret desires and put them all out there on the table, or ottoman as the scene dictates. The sex scenes ranged from spanking to bondage and anal play with toys and were very hot.

There were only a couple downsides. First, it’s a shame the publisher didn’t create a cover that reflects the wonderful story inside. And, the dialog was awkward in a few places during some of the sex scenes, but didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. In fact, I will be looking for more from Ms. Slayer.

Overall, the book was a satisfying read. If you like a book that will fit into a quick break in your day, then this one ought to leave you buzzing from a nice kinky interlude.

A misguided plan and a bachelor auction lead to an estranged couple rediscovering a one-in-a-million kind of love.

Every woman wants Michael Blake. Smart, handsome, sexy, he built Eagle’s Nest into the hottest ski resort north of Park City, Utah. Now Michael is up for sale. In conjunction with a charity bachelor auction, he’s donated a week of his time to one determined bidder.

That bidder will be Katherine Blake. Time is running out, so her plan must succeed. She doesn’t require Michael rekindle the one-of-a-kind love that led to their marriage. He needn’t atone for the mistakes that led to their divorce. All he need do is renovate the gingerbread home they bought together…and one other secret thing. One tiny, astoundingly beautiful yet impossibly awful thing. And with the help of her friends and her willful Grandpa Homer—if Homer will stop picking up women long enough to help—Kat is going to see her dream come true.

“It’s amazing what kind of knowledge a girl can glean in a bathroom”

Katherine, or Kat as her friends know her, has the habit of heading for the nearest bathroom when she gets the jitters. And she definitely has the jitters as she waits to bid on the bachelor of her choice in the celebrity Make-A-Wish Foundation Auction.

To make matters worse, the hunk she’s bidding on is her ex-husband, a man that if looks could kill, would have already rendered her the victim of his rapier gaze.

Why is Kat bidding for a week of her ex-husband’s time? Well now, if I told you that, I’d spoil the fun this story is sure to give its readers.

Kat and Michael are a unique pair that I felt immediately drawn too. Author Lyn Austin shapes her characters with loving care, honest emotions, and real needs that make them more than just names on the pages of a book. While the story is on the short side, it’s fully developed and the author doesn’t rush the resolution of their problems. This is another story I’d recommend adding to your reading list.

The very first publication I tried to promote was a POD book I’d written in early 2000 before I knew what I was doing as far as publishing was concerned. At the time, I was so excited that someone wanted to publish my book that I didn’t take the time to learn about the business. My first mistake. Being young and internet friendly, I thought I had an edge on other writers out there because I belonged to online groups and communities way before Myspace was a glimmer in Tom’s eye. When the book in question finally came out, I went on an internet spamathon. I hit up all the groups I belonged to and even some I had only just joined so I could promote my book. I was nice and friendly, telling the group members how excited I was to publish my first book and included the blurb, excerpt, and buy links. I must have spent two days posting to about 30 different places. I figured the sales would go through the roof, you know, because my family and friends would buy the book too.

Guess what happened?

I got slammed.

Hard.

Not only did most of the group and community members call me out for joining the groups just to promote, they ripped apart my blurb and excerpt right in “public” for everyone to see and obviously didn’t buy the book. Mortified is the only word to describe how I felt.

I promptly took everything down, apologized to a few of the groups that I had belonged to, and crawled into a hole for a while.

But then something else happened.

One of the group members contacted me. She was very nice, honest, and helpful. Her first suggestion to me was to find a writer’s group. It was the best advice ever. I wish I still had her email address so I could thank her properly, but it got lost in the shuffle long ago.

The second thing that came from all of this was realizing that said book was pretty bad. Some of it was my fault, some of it was editing. Either way, I knew I had so much to learn about writing be it the process, submitting, editing, and/or dealing with publishers.

I took the advice and criticism to heart, joined a writers group, did hours and hours of research online, and eventually learned the correct way to promote without making an ass out of myself.

I think that first, extremely hard lesson helped me develop a thick skin rather quickly. I tend to be defensive when confronted, but when it’s online and it’s already there and you have to actually take the time to write a response back, it gives you moment to reflect and absorb what was said in the first place. Mostly everything the people in those groups said about my writing was true. It was crap. I freely admit it. One cannot get better if they don’t learn from their mistakes. I’ve learned.

I learned that everyone has an opinion. If the negative feedback is constructive, I’ll always listen. If the negative feedback is based on style, well, there isn’t much I can do about that. If the negative feedback is hurtful on purpose, I’ll just curse at the screen, take a deep breath, and then let it go. Being mean just to be mean is something I’ve dealt with for many years, so I will always take it for what it is, bullying.

Negative feedback can be a blessing in disguise too. As a writer, we are sometimes too close to a project to see the whole picture clearly. Editors, publishers, reviewers, and readers can all give valuable negative criticism if done correctly. And, as weird as this may seem, I can’t wait to get some more of it in the future. While I know you can’t please everyone all the time, honest and helpful negative feedback will only make me a better writer in the future.

For the past three years, young prostitutes and destitute women have been vanishing without trace. The only common links to their disappearances are their good looks and prison records.

Never before has a cop been taken.

Detective Billie McCoy, a member of an elite undercover squad, is on assignment when she stumbles onto a slavery racket that goes deeper than she could ever have imagined. Plunged into a web of corruption and evil, not only does she have to contend with the slave traders, but also her fellow prisoners – all who hate cops.

Stretching from the streets of Sydney to the rainforests in far north Queensland, it’s a race against time. Filled with determination, disappointment and twists, the story follows Billie’s fight for freedom and her greatest ever challenge. She will need all her cunning and skill to get out alive and see justice done.

Blood will be spilt, hopes will be destroyed – all to uncover a plot so unpredictable that only fate can decide . . .

A split second decision changes Billie’s life forever.

While on a standard undercover mission, Billie hears a woman in distress and decides to stray from the task at hand. Though Billie puts up a good fight, she soon finds herself caught in the clutches of a ruthless slave trader. Even if Billie can free herself and the other prisoners, her life will never be the same.

Billie is certainly a skilled fighter who has no qualms about taking on enemies twice her size. Even when she’s out numbered, Billie often makes a stand and manages to make her captors wish they’d never laid eyes on her. I admire Billie’s confidence and the fact that she keeps a positive attitude no matter how dire her situation appears. I have no doubt that her refusal to accept defeat will keep her going through her ordeal. Not only is Billie a tough as nails cop, but she is a compassionate person as well. Billie has every intention of escaping and she won’t leave any of the other prisoners behind when she does, even though the other women have made it clear they hate her. I really respect Billie’s determination to do the right thing, especially when she is face with such animosity.

Billie is the only character I really got to know with any depth. The other prisoners are basically stereotypes. They are women who have had rough lives and have a chip or two on their shoulders. They act tough, but are much more vulnerable than they let on. I didn’t learn much about the other women’s lives until the very end of the story during a scene where they are all sharing their “stories.” While it was nice to finally learn a bit more about each of the women, I felt that the scene had an awkward feel to it because so many details tumbled out all at once. I think it would have been a bit more realistic if the flow of information had been spread out through the story a bit more.

I must mention that there is a lot of fighting in this book described in blow by blow detail. In fact, the fight scenes make up a majority of the content in this suspense. While the action seemed realistic, it became a bit much after a while, and I could have done with less description on some of the more minor fights. I also couldn’t believe the amount of fighting that went on between Billie and the other prisoners. It was very counterproductive, especially after Billie went out of her way to help the other girls a couple of times. Billie could have simply looked after herself, but she repeatedly put her life on the line for women who clearly didn’t appreciate her efforts. I think Billie’s actions would have warranted more respect from her fellow prisoners much sooner in the story. I also question how Billie was able to continue fighting at such a high level given the sheer number of battles she found herself in and the fact that she wasn’t getting very much good food or sleep.

The ending of Slave Trader is very hard to swallow. Knowing this book was the first in a series, I anticipated an open ended conclusion. However, after everything that Billie and the other women had been through, I thought they would have been in a better place at the end of this installment. I was left feeling that everything Billie and the other women had gone through was all in vain. I certainly hope Billie’s situation improves drastically in the next book.

Overall, I thought Slave Trader was a good read. Billie is an admirable character and she and her fellow prisoners have attitude to spare. Anyone looking for a suspense loaded with action and fighting might want to give Slave Trader a try.

As a teenager, Addy Monroe had a life-changing experience—although technically the “experience” was happening to someone else in the steamed-up backseat of the taxi stuck in traffic next to him. Six years later, at a club in LA, Addy meets rock singer Zak Roscoe—the man who unwittingly taught him who he is—and gets a shot at experiencing Zak for himself.

A private and guarded person, Zak finds Addy’s determined advances both annoying and intriguing, and he allows himself to be seduced for a night of pleasure. Unfortunately, some old habits die hard: Zak’s postcoital nature leaves something to be desired, and Addy quickly realizes that sometimes fantasy and reality don’t have much in common. If wishes were second chances….

Sometimes getting to really, truly know someone takes a while.  In fact, do we ever?

These thoughts are exactly what go through Addy Monroe’s mind as he falls into a relationship with Zak Roscoe. As a teen he sees Zak by chance, making out in the back of a cab. He’s completely fascinated by the two men, well one of them in particular, so when he encounters Zak several years later, he’s more than happy to jump into the sack with the guy who has become the star of all his fantasies and wet dreams. From there on in the story romps along and I won’t give it away, but I appreciated the fact that the author didn’t throw in lots of external conflicts to the couple; it was all about them.

To start with, if I am honest, I wasn’t sure of this book, but then, once Zak and Addy got chatting I was hooked. Ms Laine is a master of dialogue, it’s snappy, witty, funny, profound and completely moved the story along. The way Addy chats so much, Zak’s frequent closing down, it was a real treat to listen to their banter and conversations. The sex was hot, super hot, but their relationship and the problems Zak in particular had with letting someone close was the theme of this story. A theme that was well handled and didn’t always give me what I expected.

I would have preferred not to have two characters with the same letter for their first name, Zak and Zane. I appreciate they were brothers, but as a reader I had to go back a couple of times to check who was who. But other than that a good read, a length that made it possible to get your teeth into, and really three-dimensional characters, who despite their faults, I was still rooting for to get that HEA. Recommended if you like m/m that doesn’t focus on the gay issue, but instead explores the relationship of two strangers, with baggage, coming together in a physical and emotional way.

Tallulah Murphy is a busy woman. As the newly appointed Director of Education for the Atlanta Art Museum, she has a thousand and one things to do on any given day. Dating is not high on that list; in fact, it’s not even on the radar.

Three hundred miles away in Charleston, South Carolina, Lieutenant Mitchell Weaver is gearing up for his promotion to be the youngest police chief in the city’s history. And unfortunately, as a prominent city official with all eyes watching his every move, a quality date seems untenable. But when good friends and good fortune set Tallulah and Mitch on a fateful adventure with Madame Evangeline’s high-end dating service, 1Night Stand, they may find a little matchmaking magic can reset their spirits of adventure and open their hearts and minds to the possibility of love.

Finding that right person to spend your life with sounds like an insurmountable task, but sign up with Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand service, and that task can become effortless!

In this tale, we meet Tallulah (Lou) Murphy, a beautiful young woman from Atlanta who has spent the better part of a year piecing her life back together after her ex broke off their relationship and did his best to ruin her career. A good friend signs her up for Madame Eve’s service, and Lou, who’s ready to find someone who makes her smile again, anxiously answers the multitude of questions and then waits to find her ideal match.

Mitch Weaver has just received a promotion to the Chief of the Charleston, South Carolina Police Department, making him the youngest chief in history. Just when his professional life was seemingly in place, however, his personal life has stagnated. Divorced for three years after finding out his wife had slept her way around the department, he’s mailed his last alimony check and is ready to move on. Thankfully, his good friend has signed him up for the 1NS service in hopes that his life can change.

As always, Madame Eve made a great match in Lou and Mitch. They both love the outdoors, have been burned by past relationships, and each want a family. A long term relationship is a definite for these two, and there is little doubt it would work.

The sex is hot, and definitely helps to strengthen the connection between Mitch and Lou. Their immediate physical attraction is enhanced when they realize they share similar interests and each is so different from the people that have hurt them in the past. Their only stumbling block? They live in different cities and different states. They quickly realize the obstacle they need to overcome, but refuse to allow it to overshadow their short time together.

I loved both characters and in a short few pages, the author conveys their past hurts, the way they overcame them, and their desire for new partners. In such a situation, a rebound is a natural assumption, but not for these two, and I credit that to the talent of the author.

As always, I’m left wanting more, but that’s because these characters are so likable. It’s hard not to root for them! If you want a quick, hot, and enjoyable read, definitely check this one out!

Mya Newman never minded the routine or quiet that came with living in a small country town like Honey Creek, Ohio. For her senior year, she craved something exciting to happen instead of it melting into a cookie cutter routine like the previous years.

When a new girl, Audrey Moore, moves to Honey Creek, Mya finds herself caught in a triangle. She discovers hidden feelings for her best friend, Michael Graves, but he seems to have eyes for the new girl.

After Mya’s father becomes ill and eventually passes, she turns to her best friend, Michael. Never leaving her side, she can’t help but wonder if he’d rather be elsewhere. With fear of rejection and loss of friendship, Mya decides she can’t confess her recently discovered feelings.

When Michael and Mya share a dance at the Winter Formal, does she confess her true feelings for him? Or does she shy away, forever longing to be the princess who finds her prince?

When Mya wishes for excitement, she gets much more than she bargained for.

I was able to immerse myself in Ice Princess immediately. Since I grew up in a small town in Ohio, it was easy to picture Mya’s world. Even without this experience, Ms. Anderson provides enough detail to give any reader a clear picture without bogging the story down.

I also warmed to Mya right away. She’s smart, caring and has a good group of friends. I also really liked the fact that she is happy with her life in the small town of Honey Creek, but that she was open to a little more excitement. I think this type of attitude is a plausible portrayal of how some teenagers growing up in small towns feel.

Mya and Michael’s friendship feels natural and it clearly has been developed over the course of many years. As Mya begins to have more complex feelings for Michael, I found it easy to picture them transitioning from being friends into being a couple. While I knew how Mya felt about Michael, I wasn’t quite sure how Michael felt about her until the very end of the story. I kept wondering if Mya was ever going to confess her feelings and I eagerly anticipated Michael’s reaction.

I must say I thought everyone in the story was nice… a little too nice really. Everyone was very understanding all the time and no one ever got in a fight with anyone else. It all seemed just a little too perfect. Even Mya’s jealously over Audrey’s closeness with Michael is extremely controlled. Mya goes through some serious emotional upheavals during the story with the death of her father and her newly awakened feelings for Michael. With everything Mya has been through, I think the story would have been even more believable if she’d have lost her cool just once.

I really liked the way the story ended. While the final scenario is a tad predictable, at the same time, it is also very realistic. It is exactly the sort of situation I’d expect a young teenage couple to find themselves in, especially in a small town like Honey Creek. It was the perfect way for Mya and Michael’s story to end.

I really enjoyed reading Ice Princess. It is a wonderfully emotional short story with just the right balance of sweetness and sadness. I recommend it to anyone who relishes a charming story of love and friendship.

The Irish Giant – that’s what Londoners called Charlie Bryne, an enormous country lad standing 8 feet tall in his bare feet. He made his fortune by exhibiting himself, but Bryne was far more than a human oddity. He had the magical power of healing, a deep connection to the natural magic of the earth, and the blood of Irish kings in his veins. In 1782, he came to London with a single goal — to bring the Irish home to the island they had left.

John Hunter was a man of science and insatiable curiosity — a surgeon, a natural philosopher, and a tireless collector of natural oddities. With analysis and dissection, Hunter strove to understand the natural world — and he wanted to add the bones of a giant to his collection.

To quote Elie Wiesel, “some stories are true that never happened.” That is, certain stories speak so clearly about the human experience that the difference between truth and fiction becomes meaningless. What matters is is the hope and joy they ignite in anyone who reads them. This is one of those sagas.

Charlie’s quest to bring Irish people back to Ireland sounds like a traditional folk tale in the best possible sense of the term. It sounds like something that has been passed on from one generation to the next for as far back as anyone can remember. The imagery is so vivid and memorable that the events softly unfolded in my imagination. I didn’t read this so much as I experienced it.

Is Charlie mentally ill, a charlatan, or is he exactly who and what he claims to be? The opinions that swirl around him about his identity and intentions brought a touch of humour to this piece. The men and women who doubt him have good reasons for their assumptions. In their shoes I’d be just as suspicious of a tall stranger who wants to take me back to a land my parents or grandparents left many years ago. It is in these interactions where Mr. Murphy’s writing shines the brightest.

The only issue that kept me from giving Bones a higher rating was the large number of secondary characters that were rapidly introduced to the plot. While nearly all of them eventually came to be important witnesses to or participants in Charlie’s adventures I did have a little trouble keeping them straight at first as well as getting to know their individual personalities and quirks.

Even with this dab of confusion Bones easily made it onto my top five reading list of 2012. It’s a heart-warming, rib-tickling romp through a world I so desperately wish I could visit in person.

One hundred years of peace and prosperity. War changes everything.

On the world of Zaria, Elves, magic and mythical beasts coexist beside rifles and railroads. The futures of two nations hang in the balance as rebels and revolutionaries trade gunfire with loyalists and tyrants.

Eadric Garrard was raised to believe that as the rightful King of Ansgar, his loyal nobles and fearful subjects answered to his every whim, no matter the cost or consequence. His decision to send his troops thousands of miles away will test that fear, and loyalty.

Raedan Clyve was ordinary until an Elven ritual involving a griffin’s heart turned him into something more. Twenty years later, he still struggles with the magics that rage through his body. His mentor holds him back from his full potential and he faces pressure to find a suitable wife and father an heir.

Hadrian Clyve has picked up where his father left off and works to expand his family’s influence amongst the Ansgari nobility. His aggressive negotiation of alliances and shrewd choice of marriage agreements has earned him respect, and resentment. When his King calls his troops to arms, Hadrian has other things in mind.

After a century of scheming and decades of preparation, Magnus Jarmann is ready to bring his family’s plans to fruition by launching a war of independence that will free his people and return his country to its rightful place among the nations of Zaria. The King’s call to arms creates an opportunity that Magnus cannot afford to miss.

In a war, little is held back; in a revolution, nothing is safe.

Ansgar is a medieval world with trains and guns from more modern times. King Eadric Garrard is the ruler but some of his lands have been taken by his ancestors by force and their people wish to separate from Ansgar. Eadric trusts no one. He’s convinced if he relaxes his guard someone will try to kill him. In direct contrast he also believes his people love him and are loyal to him, despite the fact he refuses to come to their aid when they need him.

The rebels’ chance comes when distant countries ask for Ansgar’s help and Eadric orders his nobles to call their troops to arms. The western Dukes and their followers call their levies but instead of marching to the King’s aid, they begin an attack on his armories and borders. Meanwhile the people of Kerberos also strike for independence.

The Cerberus Rebellion is set in a well thought out world and the characters are true to life. I did find so many characters quite confusing as it was difficult to keep them straight in my head. Also, it slowed the story down when the author told us in detail the color and type of clothing each character wore. This wasn’t really necessary and less detail shown as part of the story would have been better.

I enjoyed the progress of the story, particularly the introduction of the ancient members of the elf nations who acted as advisors to the humans. I really liked Raedan, Baron of Broken Plains and would read the sequel to find out what happens to him. His magical abilities brought life to his character as it gave an insight into this thoughts and actions.

The author has developed his idea of The Cerberus Rebellion well and this fantasy novel is definitely a good read for lovers of the genre.

Or will the shifter claim his mate?

I hadn’t even finished reading this story and I was already excited about reading it again! The plot twists and mysterious, dominant men make the pages sing. This explosive short had me on the edge of my seat with everything that was going on. I was amazed at how the author was able to get so much into a short story. I feared I had suffered whiplash from all of it, but would happily wear a neck brace just to read more.

The paranormal element within this story was the only aspect that was less than spectacular. I think the BDSM element coupled with the awesome plot and characters didn’t really need the paranormal element. It didn’t seem to play a big role in an otherwise explosive story. Had the author left it out I would have still been equally happy.

The characterization throughout the story was just as enchanting as the plotlines. Ink has a harsh edge to him that really excites me when reading BSDM stories. While Nathan seems to be a bit softer, and caring. I was curious to see how things would work out. Then you add in Grisha, another Dom who just screams cruel sweet torment. While Estelle was the main female character, I really think the men are what entertained me the most. Part of that may have been that I secretly wished it was me in Estelle’s shoes.

I will not only be re-reading this story, but actively looking for any other stories in the Ink Series. I would highly recommend picking up this story, that is, if you think you can handle the heat.
