About to be burned at the stake by her fellow villagers, Odaria does what any betrayed witch facing certain death would do. She calls down a curse. Within seconds, rampaging Norsemen raid the village, capturing everyone except her.

But her reprieve is short-lived, and Odaria lands in the clutches of the Norse leader Rothgar. Can she remain true to herself and fight her growing attraction to this domineering man, or will she fall under his influence and be used for his ambitions?

After Rothgar witnesses Odaria’s powers firsthand, he strikes a bargain with her. The raven-haired beauty will use her magical abilities to help him with his quest in exchange for safe passage off the isle. But can this cunning woman be trusted, or is she using him to exact vengeance on her village?

Together they must fight bloodthirsty villagers, battle a mutinous band of Norsemen, find a missing Norse ship, and learn to trust each other . . . before time is up.

Can Odaria really trust a Viking?

Odaria has never been able to trust a single soul on her small isle. Though she lives as an outcast, her life is relatively peaceful until the village leader, Brennan decides the village needs to be “cleansed” of Odaria’s witchcraft by burning her alive. When Odaria calls down a curse on the village, she didn’t expect a band of Norsemen to come charging out of the shadows, but will the brutal raiders be her savior or her downfall?

Odaria is a very brave and strong woman. She has lived her entire life on the isle where she was. Since her mother’s death, she has been alone in the world, with the other villagers only coming to her in secret when they need her magic to help them. With the way Odaria is treated by the others, I couldn’t believe she had never attempted to leave the isle. However, Odaria is far too stubborn to admit defeat, even when it becomes clear she’s in grave danger.

When Rothgar enters Odaria’s life, she feels an immediate connection to him. The attraction is mutual, and it isn’t long before the sparks start to fly. However, Odaria and Rothgar are both very strong willed, and are constantly bickering and butting heads. Despite their intense fights, Odaria and Rothgar also share some moments where they both open up about some very personal and private details of their lives. Their vulnerability is quite touching.

Ms. Wilkins also did an excellent job of building the sexual tension between Odaria and Rothgar. Though they were certainly attracted to each other physically from the moment they met, they weren’t able to act on it right away. I found the interruptions to their romantic interludes very amusing at times. Consequently, Odaria and Rothgar were able to form a strong emotional attachment. When Odaria and Rothgar were finally able to act on their feelings for each other, the timing felt perfect.

I do have to say that the conflict between Odaria and Rothgar at the climax of the book didn’t feel entirely genuine. I can’t say much without spoiling the plot. However, I will say that Odaria is led to believe something terrible about Rothgar. I find it very hard to believe that Odaria would lose faith in Rothgar so quickly after they had shared some very intense, personal, and private moments.

Still, Ms. Wilkins did a great job of depicting the brutality of the time period. Both the Vikings and the Picts had very cruel ways of dealing with enemies that made me shudder, and I am very grateful that I have never witnessed such violence first hand. I do wish there had been a bit more depth to Brennan, the main villain in the story. Brennan simply comes across as an evil man misusing religion for his own purposes. I can’t help but wonder about the deeper motives behind his actions and what drove him down the path he was on in the first place.

Overall, I enjoyed reading The Viking’s Witch. Odaria and Rothgar are entertaining characters and their romance is beautifully written. Fans of spicy historical romance should certainly give The Viking’s Witch a try.

She’s Got Her Eyes on the Prize…

Gemma O’Donnell wasn’t the first woman to win the ProRodeo buckle for bronc riding, but she was darn well going to be the second. What she didn’t count on was her main competition sweeping her off her feet.

He’ll Do Whatever It Takes To Win…

Trace Coleman isn’t really after a title—he needs the cash prize to buy his dream ranch. But one sexy, determined cowgirl keeps getting in his way. In his effort to take her out of the running, he risks losing both the title—and his heart.

They’re Both in For a Little Surprise…

Everybody’s world is turned upside down when a pint-sized bundle of joy gets dropped right into Trace’s lap…and suddenly all the stakes are higher.

Anything you can do, I can do better… or at least when it comes to bronc riding.

I know when I read a book by Carolyn Brown, I’m in for a treat. The writing flows and the words leap from the pages. I’m immersed in the world of the characters and tend to finish the book in one sitting. The same was the case for Just a Cowboy and His Baby. I devoured this book in what seemed like no time at all and thought about the characters after I put the book down.

Here’s my quandary. I liked this book. I did. But for me there were aspects that tripped me up. I love animals and I tend to talk to all four of mine. When Trace talked to his dog like it was a person, I got him. Totally. But there were moments when he went on a long time. Was this bad? Not really, but it stuck with me and temporarily ripped me out of the story. Another thing was Gemma. She talked to herself a lot, too. Seeing as how I tend to talk myself through things, I could relate to her. What I had a hard time with was her overwhelming determination to be the best. Be the best, by all means, but she went overboard. Everything had to be her way and she had to win. I like strong women, but there’s strong, then there’s so strong I wanted her to break a bit.

Still, this book has lots of good points. The writing is solid and the storyline is fantastic. I felt the connection between Gemma and Trace and rooted for them to have their HEA. The scenes in the arena are vivid. I’ve never been to a bronc riding show, but I feel like I have.

If you want a book that’s the right mix of sugar, spice and broncs, then this might be the book for you!

Lady Philippa Marbury is odd. The bespectacled, brilliant fourth daughter of the Marquess of Needham and Dolby cares more for books than balls, flora than fashion and science than the season. Nearly engaged to Lord Castleton, Pippa wants to explore the scandalous parts of London she’s never seen before marriage. And she knows just who to ask: the tall, charming, quick-witted bookkeeper of The Fallen Angel, London’s most notorious and coveted gaming hell, known only as Cross.

Like any good scientist, Pippa’s done her research and Cross’s reputation makes him perfect for her scheme. She wants science without emotion – the experience of ruination without the repercussions of ruination. And who better to provide her with the experience than this legendary man? But when this odd, unexpected female propositions Cross, it’s more than tempting . . . and it will take everything he has to resist following his instincts – and giving the lady precisely what she wants.

Humor, subtle and sophisticated, skitters through the story as the characters entice the reader into an awesome vicarious experience with a heroine that has moxie and the ‘know-how’ to save the hero while he is trying to save her.

The odd, bespectacled Lady Philippa, Pippa, needs facts and needs them NOW. In fourteen days she’s to marry and she has no facts about procreation which will be one of her most important duties. She is a person of science, intelligent, quick-witted, practical, and never been kissed.

She’s deduced from tea party gossip that the act necessary for procreation brings “ruination” for an unmarried lady but is acceptable and even a ‘duty’ after marriage. She also deduced from gossip that the foremost expert in the act of “ruination” is Mr. Cross of the Fallen Angel, the most prestigious gambling hell in London. She needs him for her research ‘assistant’.

Cross aka Jasper Arlesey, Earl Harlow is horrified to find an unescorted lady, even if she is an odd lady, in his den of iniquity where sin and darkness abide. Her scent of sunshine and fresh linen in his cluttered office sets him on edge and her request has him flummoxed; plus his body roars to end six years of celibacy.

He is fascinated with the odd Pippa. Her intelligence and her factual, rather than emotional, approach to life set her apart from women he knows. The harder he works to expel her from his world, the more she becomes entangled in it. What a hash he makes of things in his determination to save her from ruin!

What she does in return brings a climax to the story that sends the heart rate sky high and the blood pressure spirally up, up, up.

Sarah MacLean mixes the flaws and foibles of London Society with scientific facts of the time and seasons the mix with love scenes that override the unsavory to create a feast of fantastic reading. She creates a villain that is a cunning, conniving adversary that ups the ante to fever pitch. Just when it looks like he has the winning hands an absolutely amazing thing happens and true pandemonium breaks out; Ms. Maclean has the reader right in the middle of the frenzy and fray..

The remarkable secondary characters help keep the story racing along to a wedding that brings its on super surprise. All the little extras of human and animal nature that Ms. MacLean slips in make for rich, emotional reading with “wowing” love scenes being the icing on it all.

One Good Earl Deserves a Lover is beautifully written and keeps the reader’s senses and emotions captivated.

Kachina Raven is a Reconnaissance Agent for the Vampire Eradication Network.

One night while escaping a murderous cult of vampire wannabes, she meets Kael. There is an immediate attraction but she knows there is something odd about him. He has some very unusual skills and abilities. She’s sure he isn’t a vampire but knows he’s no ordinary human either.

She knows she’ll always be stalked by vampires and doesn’t want to put anyone else at risk by having a relationship with them. Her life is further complicated by the relentless pursuit of a homeland security agent.

Kael is an alpha male used being the protector but Raven makes it clear she can fight her own battles. He’s frustrated by her refusal to acknowledge the strength of the attraction between them and is determined to have her as his mate.

After wrapping her motorcycle around a tree, Raven seeks the safety of a large biker pub to escape the vampire cult goons chasing after her. Drawing many of the customers’ attention, it’s Kael whose gaze she senses most sharply. The attraction between them is electric, instant and undeniable. When a number of the cult members – and their vampire leader – track her to the pub, the situation becomes dire. Kael and Raven escape together, and start down a long and winding path neither could have forseen.

This is a quick-moving, action packed vampire and werewolf book. The characters are gritty and modern, tough but still quite easily relatable to. I thoroughly enjoyed both the dense plot and the multi-layered, complex characters. Raven is a seriously kick-ass vampire hunter with slick moves and five years experience under her belt. Although mostly human and fallible, she is not some lame, half-baked wanna be.

Matching her perfectly, Kael is an alpha werewolf, with keen senses and more than a few tricks up his sleeve. While always clearly explained and understandable, I got a little frustrated with Raven and Kael not trusting each other. Instead of using any and all resources – including each other – I found it strange they’d run from one another despite the attraction neither denies. Despite this and a few other small niggles I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Especially as the first in a series it started on a high note – the plot is convoluted and engrossing, the characters are strongly written and practically jump from the page.

There is a bit of back-story to catch up with and sometimes took me a moment or two to follow along with what was going on, but those times were easily overshadowed by the action and characterization. Overall I’d certainly recommend this book to paranormal readers, especially ones that like a bit of spice and plenty of heat in their romance. There are a number of other well-written, strong secondary characters from both the Vampire Eradication Network and I’d certainly expect more follow up books in this series.

Money, charm and sensual skills don’t make up for a heart colder than ice…

Wild parties, wanton women, relentless work—nothing helps tycoon Lucas Jackson escape his dark and haunting past. Arriving at his rural castle in a snarling snowstorm, he craves only complete isolation.… But it seems oblivion can take an unexpected and highly intoxicating form!

Personally delivering the vital file left on her boss’s desk, secretary Emma Gray starts to seriously regret her dutiful overtime mission. She never expected the dark side of the usually controlled Lucas could generate such a primitive, powerful—and entirely inappropriate—reaction.

How do you heal a man who is in so much emotional pain that he deals with it by getting drunk as a skunk on the anniversary date of the tragic event? How does a woman get beyond the fortress that surrounds that man’s heart and reteach him how to live and love again? With a little help from his friends, even ones he didn’t realize he had.

It’s a believable pain that Lucas, the hero, suffers and once I found out what it was, it was very sad. The sniffles came towards the last half of the book when one of his best friends hatches a plan that, although risky, produced feelings of tentative hope and happy tears because of the participants in that scene. I wouldn’t put it past readers to melt into a pile of goo when it comes to the toast part.

One of the participants of the drama is Emma, the intrepid heroine. I say intrepid because she has such a strong sense of duty, she ends up personifying the Mailman’s Creed, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from being as dedicated as the mailman…”. Truthfully, Emma ends up taking things a bit farther than expected and the results are scorching. Then they become the elephant in the room. How she navigates these passionate feelings for her boss is one of the more entertaining and fascinating elements of this story.

Of course, a tycoon and a savvy and powerful businessman has to have a wary and cynical view of the world. Women don’t want Lucas for his brains and art but what lines his pockets. There’s the requisite troublesome female but what I liked about Emma is her ability to see through their shenanigans. The author side-stepped that cliché quite thoroughly by making the heroine smart, capable and pretty much a type A personality – gold-digging she-cats don’t stand a chance against her. Nor does, Lucas. When Emma is guided by secondary character Avery Scott in how to dress, it was awesome. Why? Because a reader gets to see Lucas, a very self-contained man, come unglued. He starts acting very unlike himself and it was adorably entertaining.

This book also refers to the Ferrara family and it was a treat for me because I’ve been able to read quite a few of their romances. I adore world-building like this because when an author does include previous heroes and heroines from past books to help the present protagonists, it gives me the warm and fuzzies. Probably because they were awesome books in and of themselves and Ms. Morgan knows her characters so well, a reader gets little reminders of why they appealed in the first place. They have ‘presence” and Lucas fits in perfectly.

A Night of No Return romances a reader’s emotions with a wonderful and touching story spiced with the special kind of loving Ms. Morgan writes so well. It’s a book about people. She once again explores what makes us human, and our ability to be healed by the love of our friends and that one special person that cares for us deeply despite and in spite of all our faults. If a reader is looking for a “feel good” book, then this one satisfies.

Left destitute by an unscrupulous ex-boyfriend, Grateful Knight takes her father up on his offer to live rent-free in a house he hasn’t been able to sell. Desperate to make a new start, Grateful tries to overlook the property’s less desirable features, like the graveyard that stretches to her back door. On the bright side, the unbelievably gorgeous cemetery caretaker, Rick, is dead set on helping her feel at home. She vows to take things slow, considering her recent disastrous relationship, but is baffled when she literally can’t keep her hands off of him.

When things in Grateful’s house start moving on their own, another man enters her life—a sexy ghost with a dark secret. Magical forces are at work in the tiny town of Red Grove and they’re converging on Grateful. Solving this ghostly mystery won’t be easy and with the caretaker becoming increasingly jealous of her spectral relationship, Grateful will be forced to choose between the ghost and the graveyard.

Ooh la la!  This is one sexy, fun book!

Grateful Knight is a hot, snarky nurse who discovers she lives in a haunted house (which abuts a graveyard, so makes sense, right?) and also finds she has a thing for the graveyard caretaker.  A huge, weird thing because when he’s around she can not keep her hands off him (he’s one smoking hot sexy guy, so who can blame her?).

Lest you believe that things on the romance front are cut and dried, however, I must mention that she also has the hots for one of her ghosts: Logan, who’s equally hot and can cook a mean roast, to boot.  I admit, I fell for Logan right off the bat and I’m pulling for him to win Grateful’s heart.

The Ghost and the Graveyard has everything I like in a paranormal romance:  plenty of heat, lots of surprises and things that go bump in the night.  It has its share of twists that I didn’t expect, especially at the end, and Grateful was a really cool heroine — smart, snarky and no pushover.

I wasn’t thrilled at how the men acted like spoiled, pouty boys whenever they realized Grateful was undecided about which one she wanted to be with, and a few spots dragged a bit, but otherwise this book was spot on.  It’s the start of what appears to be a promising, fun and sexy new paranormal series.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Mike’s investigation uncovers a shocking number of secrets and suspects. But the stalker’s escalating violence convinces him he doesn’t have much time to sort through it all. Whoever is watching Rachel wants her dead. Mike and Rachel race to untangle a web of deceit and lies that stretches two decades into the past—before her stalker strikes again.

You can go home again, but it doesn’t mean everyone wants you there….She Can Tell starts out with a fast pace and doesn’t stop. With a heroine who fights for what she believes in, a hero that has his own problems, but can’t seem to stay away, this suspenseful read thrills. Are you ready for the ride?

No one knows heartache better than Rachel. She had a successful riding career, until fate stepped in and stripped away her ability. What else can she do but go home and start over? She’s strong willed, but definitely haunted by her past. And her future back home isn’t looking up, either. Between problems with her brother-in-law, keeping her sister safe, and keeping up with her farm, she’s got her hands full. I like this gal. She’s got a good head on her shoulders, and I can’t help but sympathize with her for all she’s lost, and her will to not let it get the best of her.

If you like a hot cop hero, you’re going to like Mike. He’s the chief of police, and he meets Rachel on numerous occasions, considering she is an apparent target for vandalism. His only job is to protect her and keep an eye on the property, but his duties turn a little more personal when he allows his heart to get involved. With a fiery attraction, sizzling sexual tension, the sparks light up from an ember to a full fledged flame.

When you add in the suspense element, it only makes things hotter. A great secondary character that I came to care about is Rachel’s sister. She plays a big role in the story, as some of the bad things involve her. I’m even hoping she gets a story of her own at a later time, because she’s had an impact on me.

As well done as the tension and suspense is, there are a few parts where I found myself skimming because it was a little slow. Not too many places, mind you, but there were a few. The characters are well fleshed out, making them very believable. I’m intrigued by the writings of Ms. Leigh and look forward to more in the future.

STAR-CROSSED

From the Isle of Skye to the battlefields of France, Duncan MacDonald has never escaped the memory of the true love he left behind. Deemed unworthy of a chieftain’s daughter, Duncan abandoned the lovely Moira to prove his worth in battle. Now, when called upon to rescue her from a rival clan, one thing is certain: Moira’s pull on his heart is stronger than ever.

Bartered away in marriage to a violent man, Moira will do anything to ensure she and her son survive. When a rugged warrior arrives to save her, the desperate beauty thinks her prayers have been answered-until she realizes it’s Duncan. The man who once broke her heart is now her only hope. Moira vows never again to give herself—or reveal her secrets—to the fierce warrior, but as they race across the sea, danger and desire draw them ever closer.

Margaret Mallory, as she has often done before, pulls the reader into a memorable vicarious experience in long-ago Scotland. Her rich, eloquent writing style sweeps the reader into a sensory loaded adventure—spine-tingling, sometimes frightening, and, best of all, has magical love scenes that take the breath away, set the heart pounding, and assures one that true love finds a way—even if it is thwarted at every turn. The Warrior is another of Return of the Highlanders series. It sizzles with love and captivates with intrigues, and sends the heart racing with the dangers.

Eight years after the warrior Duncan last saw Moira MacDonald, Tearleg, the clan seer, tells him she heard Moira’s voice, sees a pool of blood, then a savage storm. He must go to her. It will change his fate and help the clan in its time of need. Connor, Moira’s brother now the chieftain of the clan, tells Duncan to go.

Seventeen-year-old, willful, beautiful, spoiled Moira MacDonald has her chieftain father wrapped around her little finger and thinks she has eluded detection as she meets Duncan in their special place. Then Duncan leaves without telling her goodbye. He goes to war in France. She doesn’t know the truth about why he left. But angry, bitter, broken-hearted and desperate, she marries the Irish chieftain MacQuillan. Her charmed first seventeen years of life deteriorated to years of a living hell, fearing for her life, trying to protect her son, and keeping both their souls from being destroyed by her cruel, abusive husband. She becomes a complex individual with unique strengths. She blames Duncan for her misery and guards her heart, feeling she could not survive it being ripped to shreds again. While some of her selfish traits seem ingrained into her very being, they serve her well. Her intelligence and understanding of human nature prove invaluable to her and her clan.

Now captain of guard for the MacDonald clan, Duncan is a mighty warrior and respected by his men. The bastard son of the nursemaid for Connor and Moira, he’d grown up with them. He and Connor watch each other’s backs as they fight the enemy. They trust each other implicitly—tried and true friends. Silently Duncan carries the shame of his sire violating the Highland tradition requiring the man claim his child, regardless of whether he is married to the mother or not. Their stations in life are very different, but it does not show in their relationship. However, Duncan knows it is different with Moira. Even though she is his forever love, he believes she has to wed a chieftain of another clan to strengthen alliances according to custom.

Secondary characters add a rich, varied texture to The Warrior. The antagonists are fearful, mighty force that test the mettle of all the Macdonald clan. They keep the tension high. One of the most interesting characters is the wolfhound Sar. He is forever loyal to Moira and her son Ragnall, but proves to be a true ally to Duncan in a time that is pivotal to the plot. Tearleg, the seer, adds a touch of humor as well as a touch of the supernatural, while Ilsya, Duncan’s sister, also adds a touch of the supernatural but most of all she lets the reader see loyalty, industry, and unrequited love. So many more of the characters are intriguing and all blend to create a mesmerizing story.

If you have read The Guardian and/ or The Sinner you will get to caught up on some old acquaintances. If you have not then The Warrior is a great place to start. I am looking forward to The Chieftain.

The Warrior is a riveting historical tale that throbs with life and love.

With a client list hotter than the Zubran desert, wedding planner Avery Scott shouldn’t be surprised that her latest client is Crown Prince Malik of Zubran—the man who once lit her body on fire…before steamrollering over her heart.Determined to ignore Malik’s lethal charm, Avery makes a very personal not-to-do list:

1. Not being Malik’s intended, our relationship must remain 100 percent professional.

2. His arranged bride might have run away, but I mustn’t distract him—for the kings of Zubran, duty always comes first.

3. However luxurious the Bedouin tent—and smoldering the tension—pride dictates the touch I crave stays strictly forbidden.

To have a relationship, you have to have two people who open up to each other and at least meet each other half way in revealing their inner fears, right? Without trust, how can something like love grow? Those are some basic questions that both Avery and Malik have to wade through before they can move forward.

Interestingly enough, I ‘met’ Avery in one of Ms. Morgan’s previous books and based upon a few comments that were made in that story, it was inevitable that I’d eventually see Avery as the main heroine at some point. This is her turn in the spotlight and wow, what a powerhouse of a lady. She’s driven, focused, has amazing determination and business savvy and plays her cards so close to her chest, she never reveals even the tiniest hint that’s she is not in charge at all times. Doesn’t she sound uptight? I mean, she’s successful in the book, but it’s come at a cost. And for a person, man or woman, to be that controlling, doesn’t that trigger some questions? As an avid reader of romance, I knew that the heroine was hiding behind that control. What I couldn’t have guessed in a hundred years was the secret.

Malik, or as Avery and close friends call him, Mal, was another controlled and dominate character. At first I saw him as Avery saw him – a man who didn’t love, who kept women at arm’s length and who was so not into her that as soon as they separated, became engaged to another woman. I was not a fan of Mal. That is until the author lets readers into his head. Until at one point Mal does open up to the heroine and what gets revealed is an amazing and heart wrenching picture of what it is to be Prince Malik. At that moment, and a credit to the author’s writing, I was very sympathetic to his character. In fact I felt bad for him. And for Avery. They have an incredible amount of emotional baggage, they’re both hurting and they both need the strengths found in each other to heal.

What I found most intriguing was Avery’s eventual secret. A few comments that she made during her internal dialogue gave me hints that I put together about what it might be. It turns out that I was right. It was interesting but on the other hand, I am unsure whether or not such a situation would be that much of a stumbling block to love. I can see the stress that it might cause, but the massive amount of importance that Avery attached to it seemed overwrought. Then there was her mother. For a character that was never on stage, she sure was a bizarre nutcase with some serious hang-ups and phobias. Descriptions alone had my hackles rising in defense of Avery. And that text was so cold! It’s not a wonder the heroine had some serious relationship issues.

My favorite part is when Malik has his “Aha!” moment. When he finally got to see a crack in Avery’s armor and realized a very important fact previously missed is when the momentum of the plot picked up speed and it got really interesting. Before that, I was just as frustrated as the two of them.

This story is solely focused on two people who were hurt once before and being able to get a second chance at love. It comes about in a most unlikely and twisted manner and I sort of found it funny. It seemed to me, once I’d read it, that they both really wanted the second chance but simply could not find a way to make it happen. They were too stubborn, boneheaded and hurt. And yet as oddball as it was, they eventually rationalized how much perfect sense it made, and henceforth drove each other nuts with smoldering looks, passionate remembrances and yearnings that drove their libidos up the wall. It definitely made for interesting reading. Ms. Morgan really put her characters through an emotional wringer in this one.

Even though her role is a small one, my absolute favorite secondary character is Chloe. She completely cracked me up. And what she does at the end gave me the giggles. What a cutie.

Woman in a Sheikh’s World takes readers on an exotic adventure filled with passion between two personalities with enough charisma and conflicts to make Clash of the Titans seem tame. Two strong people who have too many secrets, who fear revealing them enough that they almost let the best thing that could ever happen to them slip away. But for once, Mal’s stubbornness and ability to focus on the end goal finally has a clear path and nothing is going to stand in his way, even if that stumbling block is Avery herself. It’s a well written romance with a happily ever after that satisfies while educating me on why doves are better than swans. His Family or His Heart — One of Them Will Be Betrayed…

Ian MacGregor is wooing a woman who’s wrong for him in every way. As the new Earl of Balfour, though, he must marry an English heiress to repair the family fortunes.

But in his intended’s penniless chaperone, Augusta, Ian is finding everything he’s ever wanted in a wife.

A story of love, not just the usual love story,The Bridegroom Wore Plaid teems with vibrant characters. Some are heartwarming; others steal one’s breath away, while others give that “feel-good” charm that makes one happy to share in their experience. Conversely, one particular character raises the hackles of even the most tolerant.  He is an antagonist that one could really learn to hate.

With just enough history to show how the desperation and mindset of the characters came to be, the story comes alive with characters using all the means at their disposal to secure what is most important to them.

The writing flows along like music with four haunting beautiful themes of love, two themes with a strong beat of loyalty and steadfastness, and then there is a low, grumbling theme that would overridden all if allowed. Grace Burrowes enchants with metaphors that help the reader feel the pressing despair of need; the pure joy of true, giving love; the humor that delights; and the tenacious courage that keeps on keeping on.

The arranged marriage plan seems to stick in the craw of everyone but the Baron of Altsax and Gribbony. He really doesn’t care how anybody feels or whether they get hurt so long as he gets what he wants and gets it quickly.

Ian MacGregor, the “almost” Earl of Balfour plans to sacrifice his own desire for a love marriage to insure the future security of his family and clan. His sense of honor and family duty rules his actions. Never again does he want to see his own in need or near starvation.

Augusta Merrick, the Baron’s niece, arrives on the scene with all the trapping of an eccentric spinster, cat and all. Her metamorphosis, or maybe better her reawakening, is a lilting note throughout the story. The relationship she has with the intrepid little, red-haired Fiona is a kindred-soul connection that Ms. Burrowes lets the reader share in marvelous ways. After many years of subsistence living, Augusta dances again. She makes Ian MacGregor feel like he is dancing with music in his arms. Augusta loves Ian MacGregor but she knows he feels he must marry for money; so she will do whatever it takes to insure he is happy.

Gil and Connor, Ian’s brothers, work just as hard as Ian to rebuild the Earldom but they abhor the idea of Ian marrying for money. They realize it would make him feel like “a neutered Scottish hound on a short English leash”. But they persevere with Cupid giving them no rest. Secrecy and high, often strained, emotions run rampant.

Ian’s sister Mary Frances, a widow and mother of Fiona, is a formidable, beautiful woman who runs Balfour with efficiency. She may order everyone about and scold, but she loves her family and her loyalty is unfailing, without measure. Her personal life is somewhat of a wreck, but quietly tiptoes in for her.

How these MacGregor siblings get paired off with the “paying guests” from England is fantastic reading. The Baron, Willard Daniels, is bound and determined that his oldest daughter Eugenia will marry Ian for a title when all she wants is to marry for love. Hester the Baron’s younger daughter really is more interested in getting back to London Society than anything else. One of the chaperones, Mrs. Julia Redmond, a widow, is struggling with loneliness and is hard pressed to do chaperone duty when she has found something far more interesting to do. Augusta, the Baron’s disenfranchised niece, is blooming in Scotland and is escaping all kinds of dangers. A quiet and seemingly afterthought is Matthew Daniels, the Baron’s son, who is a disappointment to the Baron. He has gone into “the trades” that is far beneath his station in life according to the Baron. He seems so inconsequential. Or is he?

The plot moves along apace with complicated sub-plots and humorous asides. They keep the action lively and charged with strong emotions as the main plot keeps things tense and edgy much of the time. Of course, those Highlander MacGregor men—gorgeous and to-die-for lovers—can make one almost forget the plot at times.

The shining, exquisite jewels of the story are the love scenes that range from frolicking fun to the soul-mate, magical, joyous love that defeats conscience and common sense so that unquenchable “happy-ever-afters” come to reign.

Grace Burrowes steps out of the Regency Era into the Victorian Age with an awesome tale. She makes the story magical with her eloquent writing style that is lyrical and full of poignant metaphors. It touches the heart and lingers. The Bridegroom Wore Plaid is a rich, emotion-filled tale to be enjoyed more than once.
