HE HAD A PERFECTLY ORDERLY LIFE…

William, the sixth Duke of Pelham, enjoys his punctual. securely structured life. Orderly and predictable—that’s the way he likes it. But he’s in the public eye, and the scandal sheets will make up anything to sell papers. When the gossips link him to Juliette, one of the most beautiful and celebrated courtesans in London, chaos doesn’t begin to describe what happens next…

UNTIL SHE CAME ALONG…

Juliette is nicknamed the Duchess of Dalliance, and has the cream of the nobility at her beck and call. It’s seriously disruptive to have the duke who’s the biggest catch on the Marriage Mart scaring her other suitors away. Then she discovers William’s darkest secret and decides what he needs in his life is the kind of excitement only she can provide…

Dignity, punctuality, routine, and responsibility mean little to Juliette, the Duchess of Dalliance, but they rule William, the Sixth Duke of Pelham. His “mind-numbing” routine, drilled into him by an unloving father, never lets him forget—he is a DUKE.

When he publicly cuts Juliette and calls her a strumpet, nothing more than a well-paid whore, she calls him an insufferable ass. Even though she’s divorced and known as a courtesan, she’s not made of stone. His cruel words hurt but she cannot let it show if she wants to keep her exalted place in society.

When these two become co-conspirators to find a murderer, the friction between them wears away the calloused, rough edges until their true personalities shine. It’s a slow sometimes painful process, but it polishes them to a breathtaking awareness that nurtures love like neither of them has ever known.

Elizabeth, the duke’s fiancée; Lucifer, the gambling hell owner; and Oliver Clifton, Juliette’s ex-husband, are little more than shadowy characters, yet they have remarkable influence on the action. They fuel the mystery, fear, and suspense, while Lily, the Countess of Charm; Fallon, the Marchioness of Mystery; and the Earl and lady Sinclair fuel mystery of another kind and a tale that surrounds the Three Diamonds and their relationship to the Earl.

The other secondary characters help weave together the intriguing elements of the plot that prove to have political entanglements as well as the ton’s insatiable curiosity and societal pitfalls. Of course, “where are the stolen diamonds?” is a prominent thread ever present in the plot.

Shana Galen gives some insight into the personalities of the primary characters and sets up a situation before immersing the reader into murder, mischief, mystery, and meanness. As she shepherds the hero and heroine along through happenings that threaten societal suicide for them, she keeps the tension high. With subtle humor and poignant back stories, she makes the characters seem real. The awakening of the Duke of Pelham to a life not ruled by routine and always having to be “a DUKE” captivates. The part Juliette plays in his awakening brings her out of the category of divorcee and courtesan to become the person she’d dreamed of being.

When You Give a Duke a Diamond is a Regency romance that reveals the mores of the time and has just enough twists and turns in it to keep one turning pages; but most of all it entertains with wonderful characters having to deal with just enough conflict to show their strengths and weakness that make them seem so human and so deserving of their happy-ever-after. A joy to read!

When Nowhere is Safe

Most people avoid the dreaded Whitecapel district. For Honoria Todd, it’s the last safe haven. But at what price?

Blade is known as the master of the rookeries—no one dares cross him. It’s been said he faced down the Echelon’s army single–handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood–craving he’s been quicker, stronger, and almost immortal.

When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She’s so…innocent. He doesn’t see her backbone of steel—or that she could be the very salvation he’s been seeking.

Bec McMaster combines the very best of the old style vampire story with the faster pace of the more contemporary in her novel, Kiss of Steel. It’s an entirely successful combination with the wonderfully eerie backdrop of London’s Whitechapel district creating a detailed, yet, never distracting backdrop. Honoria Todd is a clever but believable (especially for the time period) main character…and ‘Blade’ is both frightening and devastatingly attractive. This is a vastly different – yet somehow the same – London that we’ve imagined a thousand times as presented in the Victorian era, only …this is a London with a culture of blood.

Even though this will appeal to fans of the paranormal – the story isn’t confined to realms of paranormal, nor predictable in any way. The Duke of Vickers is an unexpected dark force in this – so the story is vastly more than the trial between a vampire and his victim. There are the ever-present dangers of the dark side of London, the endless sensual appeal of “Blade”.

Indeed, Honoria must battle and barter for her own protection – little imagining how she is insidiously being snared along the way. On the other hand, it seems easy for her enemies to underestimate her. But, who is the enemy? Everyone, and no one – this is a complex tale and few things are as they seem.

Kiss of Steel is more than a romance, and more than a vampire tale, although it will appeal to both. It’s ultimately Honoria’s story, her battle for triumph… or surrender. Riveting! Put it on your Must Read list.

Every Time She Uses Magic Something Goes Terribly Wrong…

Vana wishes she hadn’t dropped out of genie training. Now she’s determined to get a grip on both her genie magic and her life. But the harder she tries to fix things for her intriguing new master, the more she drives him crazy…

Except There’s Nothing Ever Wrong About Him…

Pro–football player Zane Harrison finally has control of the family estate and is determined to put to rest his grandfather’s eccentric reputation. Until he discovers that behind all the rumors is a real, live genie who stirs feelings in him he’s never known before. The more Zane tries to help Vana harness her powers, the more her madcap magic entangles his heart…

Zane Harrison just wants to get back to his life as a professional football player. As the last of the Harrisons, he has returned to the old family home, determined to sell it and escape his grandfather’s eccentric reputation. What he finds, however, is more that he can believe.

Zane quickly discovers that his great-grandfather Peter wasn’t really crazy, but was, in fact a kind and generous man, who just happened to possess a genie. And not just any genie, but a beautiful, sensuous and very definitely inept one. Vana is determined to show Zane that he needs the house just as much as the house needs him. As each catastrophe is worse than the one before, she has to try and harness her errant powers, and show Zane what life could like, without falling in love with him, that’s not allowed for good reason.

Then, there’s Gary, Zane’s high school nemesis, determined to find out the secret to the Harrison ‘curse’ to have it for himself. Can Vana tame her powers and her attraction to Zane? Can Zane come to terms with the fact that magic really does exist, and his old family home is filled with genies, gargoyles, dancing dishes and a talking phoenix named Merlin, who always makes inopportune entrances? Can Vana stop Gary, save the house, and win Zane’s heart in the process?

Magic Gone Wild is Judi Fennell’s third book of magical genies. I have the others, but was happy to see that they are stand-alone books. This is a fun and sexy world Ms. Fennell has created, and her characters are a delight to meet. The mix of reality and magic is sometimes funny, sometimes sweet, but always engaging.

Nirvana Aphrodite, or as she prefers, Vana, is an eight hundred twenty nine year old genie. She’s sweet, sexy and wants to be successful like her twin sister. But unfortunately, Vana can’t control her magic, no matter how hard she tries-until she kisses Zane. Then things work the way they should for a while. She’s determined to convince Zane not to sell the house, with all of its enchanted inhabitants and historical value. I enjoyed watching as she got into each mess, and the things she would do to fix it sometimes made more problems for her. I liked her for her never give up attitude, and what she would do for those she cared about.

Noah Harrison is tall, handsome, and determined to make the town forget his great-grandfather’s eccentric reputation. Now that the estate has come to him, he plans to fix up the house and sell it, so he can get back to his life in the city. So imagine his surprise when he’s dropped into Vana’s genie bottle, and life becomes surreal for him. I liked Zane, and his slow acceptance of the reality of magic in the world. It was fun watching as he began to care for Vana, and learned more about his family’s history in the town of Harrisonville, Pennsylvania. Along the way, he found out that what seemed important when he first got there, just didn’t compare to what he found in the old family homestead.

There are some memorable characters in this, like Merlin the wise-cracking phoenix, the enchanted children who were now dancing dishes, and many other magical folks. The whole house became a character as well, and of course Gary, the one-time bully and prospective politician has a role in the overall events as well. There’s one huge surprise at the end, concerning who has been behind everything, and it’s a well-disguised secret till the end. I recommend this for those who believe in magic and passion and like their romance with some of both.

The early twelfth century is a time for ambitious men to prosper, and royal servant John FitzGilbert is one of them. But when the old king dies and his successor is appointed, John faces a terrible choice: he must join the rival faction-his enemies- or risk losing everything. His new wife helps him carry his burden, but his final choice will seal not only her fate, but those of his young children.

As the fight for England’s crown enters a new phase, John may be forced to make a terrible sacrifice…

It’s a time of strife, the early 12th century, and people are called upon to make decisions, and to swear loyalty to one leader or the other. The price of choosing the wrong one is everything a person holds dear.

The hero, John Fitzgilbert, is a man who knows where he stands. He’s brave beyond words, filled with honor, and irresistible as a lead man. And, he really existed. This is his story, his place in history, fictionalized in a fast-paced, exciting adventure. Should he support the dead king’s daughter to rule the country or her cousin, Stephen?

John has to make a terrible decision. Honor is at stake, but when the lives of others are involved, sometimes a person has to do things that hurt. John must face his dark side and come face-to-face with situations that secretly make him tremble with grief, but he does it.

The secondary characters, such as King Stephen or John’s two wives and children, support the storyline effortlessly and tug at a reader’s emotions. Several scenes throughout the book are particularly poignant, like when John is trapped in a battle and loses his eye, or when his young son, a greatly endearing character, is King Stephen’s hostage. That little boy, like his father, is memorable. It’s nice to know that his story is told in other books by this author.

The story unfolds with the devastating politics of the time. The reader is treated to a world filled with so many realistic medieval details of life that it’s the next best thing to being there to observe. Those who love accurate historical fiction, exciting characters, a plot filled with suspense and action, high emotions and surprises, will probably love this book.

Beneath the Surface of Victorian Life Lies a Very Different World…

Hated and feared by the upper classes, the Illuminists guard their secrets with their lives. Janette Aston’s insatiable quest for answers brings her to their locked golden doors, where she encounters the most formidable man she’s ever met.

Darius Lawley’s job is to eliminate would–be infiltrators, but even he may be no match for Janette’s cunning and charm…

Lady Janette Aston loves science and has a fascination with the Illuminists. It’s forbidden by her father but she refuses to be cowed by him. She sneakily reads their magazine, hiding it in her bedroom. But when she dresses in pants and visits their building, she’s gone a bit too far…

The Illuminists use the power of crystals to make energy that powers lights and doors and heats water. She is totally fascinated by how it works and what it can do. Her curiosity and smart brain get her in a lot of trouble. Especially when it was determined she was a true spirit that melds well with the crystal and can locate it by its vibrations.

As can be expected, there is another group who wants control of the crystal and a pure spirit to do it with. They are making weapons and have plans to take over the world. When they go after Janette, the story gets even more exciting.

The two main characters are Janette and Darius. Darius is a guardian and takes the responsibility of keeping Janette safe. That’s no small task. There is a traitor in the safe house and action picks up and doesn’t stop until the very end.

All the characters are well developed, they each face numerous challenges and the bad guys are really evil and full of only their self-interest. The fight between the two factions is intense. Janette has been learning about Illuminists, but she’s not through with her training. When she becomes a pawn in a game that has been going on for years, it’s dangerous, breath-taking and almost looks hopeless. Even worse, she’s fallen in love with Darius.

This story grabbed me right at the beginning and I had great fun seeing the world the author created. The dynamics between characters keep the story interesting and I read it all in one sitting. It’s also going in my personal library because I liked it so much and want to read it again.

The best part: I think there will be a sequel. Janette’s friend Sophia has been affected by the crystals, too, and she seems to have a crush on Bion. I’m hoping we will have an opportunity to visit this world again.

Beautiful but broke student Polly and scheming social climber Alexa may have grown up in the same place, but they couldn’t be more different. Polly’s just fallen for Max, a handsome country vet. But Alexa can’t be bothered with love—any guy with a pedigree will do, mind you, as long as he comes with a title, a mansion, and a family tiara.

Alexa wiggles her way into friendship with Florrie, a clueless aristocrat who could support entire countries with her spare change. Suddenly the grandest doors swing open for Alexa, and a new life is so close she can taste it. Polly could care less about Max’s money, but his mysterious habit of disappearing scares her. What’s he hiding?

Razor sharp in its wit, and as fresh as newlywed royals, Marrying Up reveals how sometimes a rags–to–riches story can rip a girl to shreds—and how sometimes the rewards of love aren’t always what you expect.

Polly and Alexa may have come from the same humble beginnings, but when it comes to where they’d like to go, they’re on opposite ends of the spectrum. While all Polly wants is to marry the man of her dreams, Alexa’s looking to climb the ladder as high as she can, at any cost. When their two very different worlds collide, sparks are going to fly… and chaos shall ensue!

Polly is your typical girl-next-door. She’s had her heart broken and is working to ignore it as best as she can. With the aid of her supportive parents and her unwavering sense of humor, she’ll manage to pull through. What I love most about Polly is that she’s very real. She’s unapologetic in her feelings and actions, and just does her best to get through the days. If anyone deserves a wonderful man like Max, it’s Polly.

Max is everything that Polly could have ever wanted, but he’s harboring a secret. One that will completely change the way she feels about him. Or will it? He has no way of knowing for sure until he tells her. It was really fun to watch him woo her even while she was turning into her own worst enemy. The fact that he doesn’t let her runaway mouth get between them really endeared him to me. He’s patient, he’s kind, and he’s hot – what more could a girl want? Max is so good with both Polly and her family that it made me want to take him home, too.

Alexa and her comrade-in-arms, Barney, are the comic relief of the story. Although their determination to live a life of social stardom is despicable and underhanded at times, their sheer audacity kept me in stitches. The things these two will do just for a little recognition was amazing. And there was absolutely nothing they wouldn’t try to gain that status they were aiming for. In addition to Alexa and Barney, Marrying Up was loaded with an amazing cast of side characters that were too much to believe sometimes. But they certainly kept the laughter flowing.

Marrying Up is an entertaining combination of sweet love story, humorous adventure, and incessant social climbing. Sometimes frustrating, sometimes laugh out loud funny, and always witty, this book refused to let me walk away from it. A very enjoyable read that makes the utterly unbelievable into an entertaining story that I’m not going to forget anytime soon.

Throughout their special mission, Archie doesn’t know whether to make love to her or plant her face-first into the dirt. But he’ll do whatever it takes to break through that shield Kee wears around her heart.

I Own the Dawn is not your average action story, it’s so much more!

This is the second in the Night Stalkers series, but even though I hadn’t read book one, I didn’t have a hard time at all catching up with the action. M.L. Buchman writes with eloquence and a feel for emotion that drew me right into the story. The characters are realistic and fun as well as darned good with guns. I loved it.

One thing I really liked about the story was the introduction of Dilya. She adds a dimension of humanity to an otherwise hard topic to deal with. This story takes place during a war. Yes, it’s gritty. The truth of the matter is war isn’t romantic or pretty. Buchman deals with the topic handily and like I said, with the introduction of Dilya there is an element of what the SOAR group is fighting for – to save humanity, if even in just that small place they happen to be.

The relationship between Kee and Archie is both hot and sweet. From the start, I knew they belonged together. It was just a matter of how they got there. And it was a HOT ride. Totally worth the read.

If you want a book that’s packed with emotion and action, then this is the book for you!

How can a lady avoid a scandal…

Just as Miss Isabella Winslowe is finally achieving comfortable respectability, the fascinating and decidedly unrespectable Earl of Colebrooke inconveniently appears…

When a gentleman is so determined to flirt…

The darkly handsome Daniel Colebrooke is intrigued and alarmed when an alluring young lady arrives at his door in need of assistance. In a moment of impetuosity, Daniel decides he must keep a close watch on Isabella, and what better way than to strike up a not–so–innocent fliration…

Together they’ll cook up more than a little mischief when a disappearing dead body and a lascivious scandal spins their reckless game entirely out of control.

Ah, mystery, murder, men shy of marriage, mercenaries, and a merry mischief-maker all mixed together. The ton is titillated and the gossip grows.

Daniel Fletcher Coldbrooke, The Seventh Earl of Coldbrooke needs a wife.  He doesn’t really want a wife, but needs one. As a second son, he’d been a gentleman rogue until tragedy struck his family. Now he needs respectability and an heir. Of course, he wants a submissive, obedient wife. It would be nice if he loved her, but that’s not a deal-breaker. He’s dedicated to getting himself and his sister Gretchen married in one Season.

As we know, the best laid plan can go astray. With the help of one unconventional mischief-maker, his plan is set on its ear, or so it seems. This is a Regency romp to enjoy.

Isabella Winslowe, pretty much abandoned by her father and left in the care of a spinster aunt, has respectability and acceptance in the ton, but her plan is to live independently like her aunt as soon as she’s old enough to come into her inheritance. Obedient and submissive are not in her vocabulary much less in her personality. She’s intelligent, compassionate, adventurous, and determined—far too outspoken.

Her first encounter with the earl of Coldbrooke sets her on edge. He’s condescending, arrogant, judgmental and about as approachable as a wild boar. But he is so impressive, intriguing and powerful. He makes her heart race. Isabella and Daniel, thrown together to help save his sister Gretchen’s reputation and solve a mysterious murder, strike sparks off each other and ignite a slow burn that Daniel has a hard time controlling. While in cahoots and going on clandestine ventures, Daniel finds keeping his hands off her is as much of a challenge as solving the murder is.

The secondary characters add tension and intrigue. While Society Rules create worrisome times for anyone who doesn’t conform—which Daniel and Isabella can’t seem to do. My goodness, some of the chances they take are risky and so exciting.

Amelia Grey has a fantastic way of bringing characters to life. They pulsate with emotions and sparkle with humor while threading their way through the minefields of Society Rules to assuage out-of-control cravings and still stay ‘respectable’. She never allows the story to lag and she sprinkles in clues and a few red herrings throughout to keep the reader guessing. However, she keeps the reader turning pages with the steadily growing love story that enchants. A Little Mischief is playful and seductive with a touch of sad and serious, Most of all, it is uplifting, a Regency romance that leaves the reader feeling good. All has come right for the hero and heroine and for some other nice people, too. This one is a sparkling happy-ever-after.

Rachel Schmidt Nussbaum, a young widow, is now seven and a half months pregnant with her first child. She blames herself for her husband Josef’s death and she believes that she is being punished by God for her past sins.

So when a stranger arrives claiming to be an old friend from her wilder years, saying only she can fix things for him, for Josef, and for herself, she makes an impulsive decision to follow him. Thus begins a journey that will lead Rachel to the depths of ultimate danger, the potential for new love, and a battle that will decide both the fate of her soul and the life of her unborn child.

This story can inspire those for various cultures, ages, and backgrounds with its gripping plot lines and unique characters.

Rachel is a character that I sympathized with immediately. As a widow with child, I could not help but feel a pang of empathy for this soon-to-be mother. While she may seem like a quiet, young Amish woman on the outside, inside she has the heart of a lioness. She willingly sacrifices herself not only for those she cares about, but also for the beliefs that she has been taught since she was an infant. Even if God may have turned His back on her because of Rachel’s misdeeds in the past, she will do whatever it takes to maintain her moral standards and compassion for those around her. This really makes Rachel a remarkable heroine and one of the reasons this story kept me entertained.

Roc’s character was very intriguing because I never knew which end of the moral pendulum he would swing to next. As a vampire hunter, he had to make some tough decision that could get not only him but others killed. It also made him keep even his closest of friends at a distance since he knew he may have to be their judge, jury, and executioner in the future. This created a gruff man who can be difficult to care for. It also created a character that I wanted to continuously learn about. I could read a book based on his life experience alone because I know it would be full of excitement, heartbreak, and love. Yes, even the man who seems to care for little shows compassion and love, which furthered my infatuation with him.

The characters and plot lines of this story are extremely dynamic – so much so that in the beginning they seemed a bit overwhelming. Rachel and Roc’s past played a large role in their story and I sometimes felt like I was missing a few pieces to the puzzle. In the end, I was able to understand the whole story of both their individual pasts as well as the future they both hope to achieve.

The conflict within this story keeps the plot moving forward at a consistent pace. During a large section of the storyline the conflict supersedes the romantic development, but it also helps in bringing the main characters together. The author even allowed me to feel bad for Jacob a/k/a Akiva at times, which really demonstrated the author’s ability to create penetrating characters.

Ms. Ellis really gave me a glimpse into what might be the secret life of the Amish. I lived in a predominately-Amish area at one point in my childhood so this aspect is what initially drew me to the storyline. I was happy to see that the author keeps the Amish lifestyle as authentic as possible. It helped to make this book truly entertaining. There is nothing run-of-the-mill about this paranormal romance story and I am sure that anyone can find something about it they truly love.

Ex–Marine Nate “Ghost” Weller is an expert at keeping his cool—and his distance—which makes him one hell of a sniper. It’s also how he keeps his feelings for Ali Morgan in check. Sweet, sexy Ali has always revved his engine, but she’s his best friend’s baby sister…and totally off limits.

Rough Road Ahead

Ali’s never seen anything sexier than Nate Weller straddling his custom Harley—or the flash of danger in his eyes when she tells him she’s in trouble. First something happened to her brother, and now she’s become the target of a nasty international organization. With Nate, her life is in the most capable hands possible—but her heart is another story altogether.

Edgy, raw emotions, graphic, often horrific, descriptions of man’s inhumanity to man, and the breathtaking, joyous love scenes celebrating life make Hell on Wheels throb with life. Carefully placed in among these extremes is the gentle, sweet humor of a kindergarten teacher and the caustic humor of the black ops people that gives the story a touch of normalcy when evil threatens chaos. Woven together all of these things make bold and subtle designs in a tapestry that reveals much about each of the intriguing characters. Also in the design, the dark thread of death is ever present.

Even though off-putting at times, the cryptic, often crude language seems to be a coping devise that many of the characters use to get past the incredible horrors they have dealt with and will continue to deal with to help make the world a little safer.

Time and again the petite kindergarten teacher, Ali Morgan, wonders whose life she’s living as she’s mugged, bugged, and tailed. It’s certainly not her own quiet life. In desperation she runs from North Carolina to Chicago to seek the help of her dead brother’s partner when the police do nothing to help her. She stays the mild, gentle little person everyone sees until push-comes-to-shove then the black ops people see her cupcake façade covers a tough-as-nails determination and abilities to fight that her brother Grigg had taught her as she grew up. She’s no pushover. However, she has few defenses when it comes to Nate Weller. Her heart just won’t give up on him even though his surliness toward her is like a ‘no trespassing’ sign.

Nathan “The Ghost” Weller had been Grigg’s partner in clandestine missions for years and he’d been in love with Ali since the first time he saw her when she was still in high school. But she was and is totally off-limits to him. The tough, battle-scarred Nate now carries so much guilt about Grigg’s being dead and his being alive he feels he must stay away from her. It’s not easy when she shows up with a hair-raising story that has all the markings of being tied to Grigg’s activities before he died. Nate’s surly attitude, he uses as a defense against her, weakens as they work to unravel the mysterious happenings that sent her running to him for help. Her sunny, happy nature brings light to his dark world.

The secondary characters ratchet up the action as they each do their job to unravel the mystery. Ozzie, the computer geek with an off-beat sense of humor, makes life interesting for all besides being a mighty force in getting the information needed and getting it with breakneck speed. Of course, he’s not above thoroughly enjoying checking Ali’s luggage for bugs, especially her interesting lingerie—which WAS bugged.

The intrepid Rebecca “Rebel” Reichert with her many talents and her unrequited love for the ‘older’ Frank Knight “The Boss” creates some high tension. She also reaches out and touches the reader’s heart when she feels crushed by Frank Knight’s hard-nosed response to her special hopes and dreams (hope there’s a story about these two forthcoming)

The antagonist and his henchmen create suspense that revs up the adrenaline to a fever pitch. The power-hungry senator seems to have no redeeming qualities. His self-centeredness and craving for power is incredible. How he finally gets his comeuppance is SO satisfying.

Julie Ann Walker’s writing style hooks the reader’s attention from word one and never lets it go. The incredible descriptions of emotions, places, actions, and people put the reader right with the characters so that every one of the senses is on alert. The humor sparkles–even the dark humor sparkles like a black diamond that has many facets and secrets. Moreover, the love scenes are breathtaking, earth-shattering and, yes, exquisite-like coming home. Yet, while she mesmerizes with an entertaining story, she creates compelling situations that seem like current events one might read about in the daily paper. The undercurrent of the never-ending struggle to keep intact the freedom we all enjoy and so often take for granted makes Hell on Wheels a fantastic novel.
