Born to the street but raised within the aristocracy, Drake Darling can’t escape his sordid beginnings. Not when Lady Ophelia Lyttleton snubs him at every turn, a constant reminder he’s not truly one of them. But after rescuing her from a mysterious drowning he realizes she doesn’t remember who she is. With plans to bring her to heel, he insists she’s his housekeeper—never expecting to fall for the charming beauty.

While Ophelia might not recall her life before Drake, she has little doubt she belongs with him. The desire she feels for her dark, brooding employer can’t be denied, regardless of consequences. So when her memory returns, she is devastated by the depth of his betrayal. Now Drake must risk everything to prove she can trust this rogue with her heart once more.

Remember that movie “Overboard,” with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell? How tempting would it be if you had the opportunity to get a little of your own back against someone who had belittled you and scorned you at every opportunity? That’s the first thing that came to my mind as Lady Ophelia Lyttleton called Drake Darling “Boy,” and ordered him to bring her a glass of champagne at a ball. While Drake is not a noble, he is the adopted son of a duke, and has never done a thing to spark Ophelia’s spitefulness. So, later when he rescues a mud-covered lady from almost drowning, and takes her home, and realizes that it’s Ophelia, and that she has no memory of anything, he decides to make her believe she is a servant for a day before he returns her to her home.

This Ophelia, however, is not at all like the haughty heiress who has plagued Drake. While she is pretty inept as a servant, she quickly learns, and works hard, much to Drake’s amazement. Since the circumstances of her accident are very murky, Drake does some investigating, and feels that she may still be in danger, so he doesn’t take her home right away, as planned. They quickly develop an intimacy and an attraction. Without her prejudices clouding her judgment, Ophelia (now called “Phee”) sees Drake for the man he is. And Drake is a wonderful man – he’s big, strong, handsome, and protective. And I quite liked Phee now, that is, until her memory came back.

This book was well written, and flowed nicely. I love the trope of amnesia, when it’s well done. And, frankly, it was a good thing that Ophelia had a chance to reflect on her former nasty self, because she came out of it a much better person. There are a couple mysteries – what caused Ophelia’s accident, and what happened in her past to make her the unpleasant person she had been. There is a touching scene near the end between Drake and his adopted father which brought tears to my eyes. And I thoroughly enjoy that this series of books is about the children of the characters from Lorraine Heath’s previous series, The Scoundrels of St James. This is a wonderful read, particularly if you like stories of redemption and self-forgiveness. I highly recommend reading it.

It’s all fun and games . . . until someone falls in love.

Oliver Goswick, Viscount Rathburn, needs money—and soon. With time ticking away and his inheritance held hostage until he’s properly wed, Rathburn’s slim options point to a single solution: a faux engagement. In need of the perfect bride, he knows of only one candidate: his best friend’s wallflower sister. The plan seems flawless, except for one problem . . . He can’t help falling in love with her.

Poised, polished Emma Danvers knows nothing good can come of Rathburn’s scheme. Spending the next two months engaged in a mock courtship is not what she’d imagined for her final season. Yet, charmed by his roguish ways and the inexplicable hammering he causes in her heart, she accepts his challenge.

For Emma, keeping the secret seemed easy when it was just a game . . . But as Rathburn begins to see past her reserved exterior to the passionate woman within, the risk of losing her heart becomes all too real.

Miss Emma Danvers only wants to find a nice stable gentleman to marry, so she can finally leave her madcap household. Her parents are artists, with the corresponding eccentricities, and are therefore looked down on by society. Her prospects are not looking good, as Oliver Goswich, Viscount Rathburn, a close family friend, chases away all potential suitors. Rathburn states that he’s only acting in Emma’s brother’s place, but I suspect some feelings there that he hasn’t even admitted to himself.

Rathburn formerly lived a somewhat rakish life, but he changed when his father was killed in a fire. Now he secretly supports many noble causes, but is frustrated because his grandmother is holding back his inheritance until she feels he has really changed his ways. He is in desperate need of funds to finish building a hospital in honor of his father. He concocts a scheme to become engaged to Emma, one of the few people his grandmother approves of, and then plans to break the engagement after he has his inheritance. Emma agrees, surprisingly enough, because a broken engagement will only sully her reputation and even further lessen her chances to make a good marriage.

I am always leery of reading a new author, but this book was a sheer delight. Rathburn was constantly making me smile – he is an accomplished flirt, and fun, and honorable. It didn’t take him long to realize his true feelings, and I like that he decided he had to convince Emma to let their engagement be real. Emma was endearing as well. She tried so hard to be proper, but inside she burned with artistic talent and a love for Rathburn that she was fighting with everything she had.

This book just flowed along at a quick pace. It had likeable characters, a sweet romance, and two of my favorite tropes – friends to lovers and a fake engagement. I enjoyed it enough that I will read the prequel novella in Five Golden Rings, and look forward to the next two books in the Wallflower Wedding series. This is one instance where I’m very glad I tried a new author, and I highly recommend this book that left me with a big smile on my face.

Virginia, Lady Burke, is well aware that the powerful ex-spy will try to take command of their quest, but it’s her job to keep him under control. Yet how can she keep this untamable scoundrel under her thumb when all she really wants is to unleash the smoldering passion between them?

At last! We get to find out what has been going on with Nick, Lord Forrester, in this wrap up to the Inferno Club series. Nick has been languishing in a Scottish prison for six months, when he is released into the custody of Virginia, (Gin) Lady Burke. In previous books in this series, there was some doubt cast on Nick’s loyalty, and though he ended up proving himself by taking a bullet meant for regent, he still was sentenced to prison for trying to leave the Inferno Club, which is a lifelong obligation.

Lady Burke, it seems, is the biological daughter of Virgil, the deceased beloved trainer of this generation of Inferno Club brothers, including Nick. She desperately wanted to be a member, but since she was a female, her father wouldn’t consider it. She’s now a wealthy widow, and actually does a lot of investigating and rescue work of her own. But she has now run into a situation where she needs Nick’s help. The fact that she is Virgil’s daughter is the only reason Nick is released into her custody.

Nick is a very sympathetic character. He is tired of the killing, tired of what he’s become, and he just wants to earn enough money to go to America and start a new life. His reason for originally joining the order is no longer valid, and he is one lonely, confused man. Gin’s offer will let him start over, after he helps her, so he agrees.

Though Gin is a strong woman, and does good things, I just couldn’t connect with her. I found her too hard. She does things and wants things that she forbids her teenage son to do. She is also openly living a lifestyle, of which her son disapproves. Her lack of honesty is the cause of a lot of the ensuing action in this story. Yet, she does have a genuine love for Nick, and they have an explosive chemistry together.

The story itself neatly wraps up the series. One could read this as a stand alone, but it’s certain to be enjoyed more if you have read the previous books. For those who have followed along, it’s a satisfying conclusion to the Inferno Club.

A Viking to bed, not to wed!

Medana Elsadottir, known as the Sea Scourge, never planned to become a pirate, but there’s no denying her talent. Her female-only tribe has an island hideaway, food aplenty, goods to trade…everything except the means to breed. That’s where the strapping Norsemen tied up in her ship’s hold come in handy. Eight godly specimens—and Thork Tykirrson is the most virile of them all. Once their, eh, work is done, they’ll be free to leave. Medana had naught to due with this gods-awful plan, but she wouldn’t mind reaping the benefits.

Wed or bed…this Viking has plans of his own.

Renowned as the wildest Viking of his time, Thork was returning home to regain his father’s favor. Mayhap even (shudder) marry. His brazen—and very beautiful—kidnapper has likely done him a favor in preventing such an irksome fate. That doesn’t mean he’ll let her off easy. No one takes anything from a Viking that he’s not willing to give…not even a violet-eyed vixen who sets off the wildest fantasies.

The first thing that snagged my fancy was the idea that a woman could be a highly successful pirate – it’s about time! The second was the question of how in the world a woman could overcome and capture a well-muscled and experienced swordsman who was used to going a-Viking? By the time the first chapter ended, I had a partial answer and I had a goofy smile on my face. I could tell that this was going to be a very interesting story. I think it was the dialogue that clinched it.

This scares, excites and sometimes causes us to be have fun within worry furthermore. cute-n-tiny.com cheapest viagra tabs The Presence of these components in (super P force) acts marvelously, to ease down the difficulty of ED and PE (sexual disorder). on line cialis To make sure your body rejuvenates, it requires minimum 7 hours of sleep a levitra consultation day. Like most men who become pirates, Medana is also on the run. She’s a fugitive who has had to reinvent herself, learn to survive without a support system and somehow has prospered. In that, she’s a great role model. She proves that women can tough it out and rise above life’s challenges. The biggest challenge of her life is told within the pages of The Pirate Bride. I liked seeing her flustered, teased, taunted and although she has succeeded in the workings of being a pirate, the heroine has not lost her sense of what’s right and wrong. She does have a moral code. I like how she balances the rationality of the two. That was made very clear with the monk scene. The most frustrating thing that she’s ever had to deal with is a man. Not just any man, but Thork, the hero.

I had a ton of fun at Thork’s expense throughout a good portion of the book. It was interesting to see how the author told the story from his POV at intervals in the story. When I was seeing things through the hero’s eyes, I was greatly entertained. His frustration, amazement, gradual respect and continual determined machinations to reach his goal of escape were interesting to watch unfold. His dialogue with his men illustrated his solid and healthy relationship with them, even when it got weird and bit risqué. And when Bolthor, the worst skald in history, would share his latest poem, Thork’s reaction or thoughts about it gave me an insightful look at the hero’s personality. Anyone who could keep a straight face while being forced to listen to Bolthor is a saint. If anyone remembers the minstrel from Monty Python who plagued Sir Robin with his embarrassing lyrics, then they should get a kick out of Bolthor. That’s who he reminds me of. Fortunately, Thork is a HUGE improvement over Sir Robin. *grin*.

One of Ms. Hills’s strong points is how she uses dialogue between her characters. It’s always powerful. Through their discourse, I usually find moments of immense humor, consternation, enlightenment, and when the focus changes to interaction between the hero and heroine, well, sparks fly, passions soar and either someone is about to be seduced or tempers will explode. All of which contribute to an entertaining read. Certainly, it’s not boring.

Secondary characters were numerous. Fortunately, the author kept a handle on them and used them to make sure the hero and heroine slowly found ways to learn about the other and to foster their romance. It wasn’t an easy thing to do, what with one person having a great responsibility thrust upon them and the other wanting nothing to do with anyone. There is definite conflict between man and woman throughout the book.

As strong as Medana is as a character, she’s not perfect. Her relationship with Thork isn’t perfect. There were too many levels of mistrust still for her to overcome. The one thing that really stuck in my craw was her stubbornness. I understand she had to be written that way because she wouldn’t have survived as long as she did if she wasn’t stubborn. But I felt that she caved too fast, too easily at a critical point in the book. I couldn’t believe that she was so weak when she had ample proof to be strong. For most of the book she was strong. That whole area of the conflict when she made the choice for those under her care, to protect them, didn’t sit right with me. It was at that point that I felt she was being stupid, and clichéd. I wanted to yell at her.

A strong positive element is when Medana and Thork finally succumb to their desires. I found it quite satisfying to read, and fun too.

I can’t forget to mention Thork’s family. They play a very significant role later on in the book. And, as boisterous and larger-than-life personalities in their own right, you can imagine the extra confusion, fun and complications they represent. They also have a hand in mixing up the plot conflict. This book isn’t boring by a long shot.

The Pirate Bride is a winner for long time fans and a wonderful introduction to new readers. It’s a solid standalone read with a lot going for it. Even with my issues with the heroine, this is a strong story that provides a reader with all the best attributes Ms. Hill is capable of. There are characters I enjoyed getting to know, I laughed with them and at them, I groaned and giggled, gasped and had mild hot flashes, and am satisfied with the happy ever after. The author nailed all the most important parts of what readers look for in a romance book. The Pirate Bride is definitely a book to read when your frown needs to turn right side round. It certainly worked its charm on me.

Samantha Rousseau is used to getting her hands dirty. Working toward a master’s degree in wildlife biology while helping take care of her sick father, she has no time for celebrity gossip, designer clothes, or lazy vacations. So when a duchess from the small country of Lilaria invites her to dinner, Samantha assumes it’s to discuss a donation for the program. The truth will change the course of her life in ways she never dreamed.

Alex D’Lynsal is trying to keep his name clean. As crown prince of Lilaria, he’s had his share of scandalous headlines, but the latest pictures have sent him packing to America and forced him to swear off women—especially women in the public eye. That is, until he meets Samantha Rousseau. She’s stubborn, feisty, and incredibly sexy. Not to mention heiress to an estate in his country, which makes her everyone’s front-page news.

While Sam tries to navigate the new world of politics and wealth, she will also have to dodge her growing feelings for Alex. Giving in to them means more than just falling in love; it would mean accepting the weight of an entire country on her shoulders.

Suddenly Royal is a predictable story. It is quite obvious from the very first page that a heroine will become royal and that she will get a prince. But, that does not mean that it is a boring story! On the contrary, Suddenly Royal was a fun and satisfying read.
Even cheapest cialis australia something simple like being able to fall asleep more easily can have a huge impact on how a person would know that he is the victim of ED? The plot and premise of Suddenly Royal is very simple. Samantha Rousseau (the heroine) is a poor student with a sick father. She is fighting to keep her head above water. Suddenly she finds out that she is of royal descent. At the same time when this news is dropped in her lap, she was introduced to Prince Alex a.k.a. Prince Yummy. As quick as a blink Samantha finds herself living a life she never dreamed of nor is she prepared for it. The heroine now has at her disposal wealth, status, and finds herself experiencing huge sparks between her and Prince Yummy.

Suddenly Royal has two intertwining stories. The first one is about how Samantha is accepting her new role as a duchess, and the second is her relationship with Prince Alex. Despite its predictability and anticipation of the happy ending, Samantha’s new station in life is portrayed quite realistically including all the ugly things that popularity brings. Besides that, this story features great and realistic characters. Samantha is a strong, grounded heroine and her becoming duchess did not change her into some snotty or vain person. Her humility is so touching while her new strength after surviving all the ups and downs is very satisfying and genuine.

Unlike Samantha, Prince Yummy is not so developed and it does not change a lot throughout the story. Somehow I have a feeling that his sole purpose was to be strong and to be there for the heroine. Suddenly Royal features a very interesting and amusing gallery of secondary characters. They are well developed and their existence provide additional flavor to the story. I particularly liked Chadwick, Samantha’s personal assistant and friend all in one, but he is more that. For me he was really something special in this story.

Unfortunately full enjoyment of this story was disrupted by one thing that happened at the end of it. It is not so much that it happened as much I do not understand why this had to happen and what impact that it ultimately has on the story.

Although Suddenly Royal is a contemporary fairy tale, the story is well grounded and it nicely depicts how becoming suddenly popular is not as easy as it seems.

I had fun reading this book and I recommend it to readers who like contemporary romance novels that feature royalty.

The dialogue in The Sum of All Kisses crackles and sparkles with innuendo and humor. Only a thin veneer of social manners veils the verbal battle that is ongoing with Hugh Prentice and Sarah Pleinsworth.

The song “Getting to Know You” came to mind as I read. What Hugh and Sarah perceive to be true and what is really true are very different. These two strike sparks off each other from the word go. Sarah’s overly dramatic pronouncement that he ruined her life and the enigmatic statement that fourteen men became engaged in the 1819 Season puts Hugh in a quandary. He doesn’t even know this young woman and he is in no humor to act the gentleman. His pain, distaste for socializing, and burden of guilt make him impatient and rude to the outspoken twenty-one-year-old Sarah.

They cannot escape each other. Mutual friends and Sarah’s relatives, all involved in two huge wedding parties, make it impossible. Their getting to know each other takes the reader along on the “The Great and Terrible Caravan” of the socially elite first to Fensmore for the wedding of Honoria, Sarah’s cousin, to Marcus Holyrod, Earl of Chatteris who is Hugh’s friend; then to Whipple Hall to the wedding for Sarah’s cousin Daniel Smythe-Smith, Earl of Winstead to Miss Anne Wynter. Daniel is a dear friend of Hugh’s and the one he shot in a duel more than three years earlier. Both wedding parties are huge affairs and go on and on with Sarah obligated to be nice (well, sort of nice) to Hugh for her cousin’s sake.

The humor and fun with Sarah’s sisters and cousins offer lots of chuckles and giggles. The eleven-year-old Frances is one of my favorites. Her antics with her older sisters and her child’s insight regarding Hugh and his anti-social ways is special. The ongoing bit about the Musicales that Sarah and kin do each year is delightful; while the endless squabbling of Sarah’s three younger sisters brings a smile—so like sisters.

A dark side that Hugh as always had to deal with and how it boils over into his friends’ lives is blood-chilling. Hugh’s father, the marquess of Ramsgate, is an antagonist that makes one shudder with disgust and horror. How he is finally brought to heel is so satisfying. I’m glad the encounter with him was not too lengthy because the rest of the story is far too delightful with lively conversation and joyous love scenes to be blighted by sordid horrors Hugh and his brother had dealt with all their lives. How Sarah figures into stopping Ramsgate’s reign of terror is adrenaline-pumping action.

Julia Quinn creates memorable characters with unique personalities that engage the reader immediately. The humor, deep-emotional needs, and especially the maturation of the heroine make The Sum of All Kisses a story one doesn’t want to put down until it gets to that happy-every-after ending.

Firefighter Patrick “Psycho” Callahan earns his nickname every day. Fast, fit, and a furious worker, he thrives on the danger which helps him forget a near-tragedy that changed his life forever. But when his off-duty carousing gets out of hand, Patrick is sent back to Loveless, Nevada, where the wildfire threatening his hometown has nothing on sizzling Dr. Lara Nelson.

Lara would rather be thought of as the physician who returned to Loveless than as the misfit brought up at a hippie New Age commune. But right now she’s focused on her job at hand, patching up injured firemen…until the past hits her in the hard-muscled, blue-eyed form of Patrick Callahan. Now, the embers of their decade-old attraction have ignited into a full-on inferno, as the bad-boy firefighter and the good doctor take a walk on the wild side they’ll never forget.

It may sound trite that a first chapter could grab a reader’s attention so completely that they could not put a book down but that is exactly what happened to me. The author chose to set up a bit of history that showcased the relationship dynamic between the hero, the heroine and the hero’s brother. It showed the hero’s brashness, the burgeoning and unwelcome attraction the heroine was just starting to feel and the how the hero’s brother was the glue that kept the trio together, until circumstances tore them apart. It was a powerful beginning chapter because at the end I simply had to know how they turned out, how they survived and how it formed the people they would become. Is that a great hook or what?

This book series is about sexy bachelor firefighters. Since I’ve read quite a few of these, I can safely say that this is a wonderful standalone read. In fact, Patrick, the hero, has to face his demons and the only way to do that with any effectiveness is to leave the safety of the fire house and fight fires in an environment and place he’d never thought he would – his home town. There is hardly anything being carried over from the previous books in the series except Patrick’s bad-boy attitude and his determination to be the top at whatever he does. Okay, there are a few spotlights on the other guys in the beginning but it’s in passing, like buddies slapping each other on the back as they head off to do whatever they are heading off to do. In a way, that gives a reader that sense of what kind of firefighting family Patrick belongs to, how important it is to him and why going away was a good thing/bad thing for him. And the journey he’s about to embark upon will have him battling the fires of the forest as well as the fires of passion that have been simmering since the day he left home, he just didn’t know it.

The person who will fan those glowing embers is Lara, the heroine. She’s the woman from his past that he never truly forgot. She’s moved on with her life and she’s made something of herself which is quite the accomplishment. Wait until readers get a load of her unusual upbringing. She thinks it’s horrid but in the long run, I think it served a purpose. It made her aware of certain aspects of herself and kept her wary so she didn’t fall prey to unscrupulous men. That was a double edged sword because like a pendulum, she swung the other way and avoided men as much as she could. She was a career woman 100%. That is until fate decided to reintroduce her to her first infatuation, Patrick, in a way and manner that she could not ignore. It was adorable, dramatic, special and pivotal.

Emotions are strong in this book. The author was able to effectively convey whatever Lara and Patrick were feeling and it drew me in too. There was a lot of laughter, consternation, fun, drama, stress, sadness, joy and determination. The determination comes from the angle of Patrick’s family. If a reader enjoys the conflict of a man overcoming the challenges of a dysfunctional family then this bit of drama delivers. Once I was made to understand the family dynamic, it explained so much of why the hero was the way he was. But you know what? He’s a better man than the man he calls Big Dog. I really admired Patrick and felt he was a wonderful, robust hero. The author’s use of descriptive language sure made him sound yummy. The best part, he’s delicious inside and out. Another personality trait that I admired was his capacity to love. That was showcased by how he treated, related and cared for his brother. It was endearing and caused no end of emotional angst, and ultimately, one of the greatest surprises.

Did I mention that this story has humor? It’s in the dialogue. There were so many moments when I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. I enjoyed the repartee between Patrick and Lara and I believe it provided insight into their budding romance. They were good together and it was a pleasure to watch their relationship take off. Speaking of “taking off” – there are some incredibly sexy antics between the two that were wonderfully entertaining and fun. The author wrote those scenes extremely well and are a credit to the story.

Secondary characters are important too. They provide a wonderful flavor to the environment and were great sounding boards for the hero and heroine. At times they even provided comic relief. The only person that surprised me was Patrick’s mom. There’s also one aspect of the book that I felt could have been handled better and that was when I finally got to meet the hero’s brother, Liam. I’m not too sure what could have made it better but it didn’t resonate with me as I’d hoped. The only thing I can think of to say was that it was anticlimactic. It didn’t seem so powerful a moment as I was led to believe it might be. It had its cute moments but I just expected a bigger impact.

How to Tame a Wild Fireman is a classic character driven romance that entertains and enchants on so many levels. I was greatly affected by the conflict because I felt it was tragic. One man’s arrogance and belligerence poisoned a whole family, and for what? It was terrific to see Patrick and Lara rise above it all and to not only fall in love, but to heal, grow and finally have a future that promises to be as exciting and beautiful as a romance reader could wish. This is a book well worth spending time with. As for the ending, it has a happy ever after that’s almost as hot as any fire. Read it and see.

Nineteen years and never been kissed…being kissed in the 10th grade by a sloppy boy does not count.

Pepper has had a crush on Hunter since she was in grammar school. He is the epitome of everything she wishes she had in her life. How can she seduce him if she is so inexperienced?

Pepper is so naive and sweet. I felt for her and her inexperience. She is also shy, so taking the steps to find someone who will train her on foreplay and seduction is a courageous step. Enter Reece, totally hot hunk. Their relationship is both emotional and stimulating. At first glance, you might think Reece is a Bad Boy. As the story progresses, I became his fan. He is a strong male influence on his brother and treats Pepper with respect and kindness. Above all, he is a man of his word.

After reading this story, I realized the main theme in this book is that what you wish for may not be what is right for you. Life requires that you evaluate circumstances and not be obstinate and keep an open mind for opportunities. As the old saying goes, you also cannot judge a book by its cover.

The Highlander’s Desire was a lovely story that I really enjoyed reading. It’s an entertaining look into a Cinderella story that was just different enough to get in there and grab my attention and exciting enough to hold it until the end. The author had a lot of excitement going on in the story that had this reader feverishly turning those pages to find out what happened next.

I loved Anna, our heroine in the story. She was very nice and looked out for everyone even though she was in a bad situation. She had a wicked step-sister that I most definitely had no love for. My only complaint about Anna was that I personally felt the girl should have snatched the hair out of that sister’s head and quit letting people walk all over her.

At first, maybe I didn’t like the hero so much. Lachann has had his heart broken in the past and this played a significant part in his story. Now he is done with love and ready to marry for gain. He’s making some bad choices that were a bit disconcerting to this reader. Yet, as I read on I started to see that he was just a misguided man. So being the romantic soul that I am, I started hoping this cynical man would find love. Hoping he would choose my heroine.

So Lachann and Anna try to fight their feelings but they can’t seem to resist each other. The sexual tension was intense and when they gave in that physical romance burned bright, even as it looked like Lachann might choose another. Readers beware, Ms. Maguire had me going there for a while. When it came, the ending was great, very romantic and sweet, and it was worth the wait.

I’m gonna run it down for you : There was some good suspense here that kept me on the edge of my seat. The plot was intriguing with some wonderful secondary characters that I’d be interested in reading about. The story had good continuity with the majority of events happening over a short period of time and also helping to keep my attention. The ending was great and I enjoyed how it happened. Maguire gave me a sweetly romantic happy ending that I adored.

A good story that I enjoyed reading. It’s bound to be a winner with lovers of Highland romance.

Seduction is the sweetest secret . . .

One kiss, then another, and before she knows it, Lady Julia Leighton succumbs to the breathtaking charms of a stranger . . . at the ball celebrating her betrothal to a man who considers her a sister. The steamy encounter changes her life in more ways than one. When she meets her seducer again, Julia is no longer a lady, but an outcast, a paid companion to a lady who used to be her equal— and her desire for him burns as strong as ever.

He goes by Thomas Merritt, a name as questionable as his intentions. A thief with a secret past, he was utterly bewitched by the beautiful and innocent Lady Julia. But after their one glorious evening together, the handsome rogue left without a backward glance—knowing that he could never be a part of her world again .

Now in a Vienna rife with political intrigue, Thomas harbors a perilous secret—and the only person who can aid him is the woman who has captured his heart.

Flawed but fascinating characters in The Secret Life of Lady Julia make it a story of love that is thwarted by societal mores and the ‘rules-controlled’ peerage of England. The taboos are difficult for the teenage Julia, who just wants to be loved, to obey.

Lady Julia Leighton, no longer is to be called ‘Lady’. She is a fallen woman, disowned, and reduced to working as a companion to a grieving widow Dorothea Hallam. She is the sister of Major Lord Stephen Ives who was a friend of Julia’s now-dead brother James. They are all traveling to the Peace Conference in Vienna after Napoleon was defeated and exiled to Elba. Even though Julia has fallen from her high station in society, she is no shrinking violet and her lifelong training to be a duchess serves her well. Moreover, baby Jamie would not have been if not for her indiscretion and that thought she could not bear. He is the joy of her life—her precious child.

Thomas Merritt seems unredeemable through much of the story, but the masterful unfolding of his character by author Lecia Cornwall kept me rooting for him. He too was disowned, accused of a deed he did not do. He has no home and no place he wants to go; he roams with his valet Patrick Donovan seeking places where he can steal from people who were once his peers. His charm or forged invitations get him into all the right places. However, his short encounter with Lady Julia at her betrothal ball haunts him, nags at him, and makes him long for her — her scent, her passion, her perfection.

Major Lord Stephen Ives is now a junior diplomat but had been in the Napoleonic wars where Julia’s brother saved his and many others’ lives. Worried about his sister Dorothea who uses laudanum to ease her grief over the death of her husband and little son, Stephen hires Julia to be her companion, but he also worries about how having a ‘ruined’ woman in his household that could affect his career. But an even bigger problem is his feelings for Julia. As his superior senior diplomat Lord Castlereagh drafts Julia to listen and watch for intrigues at social function, Stephen finds himself hard pressed to keep a balance with his career aspirations and his desire to make the smart, beautiful, skilled Julia his own.

While Lord Castlereagh is much pleased with Julia, Lady Castlereagh hates Julia and with the help of the depraved Lord Charles Stewart who is in charge of security for the England diplomatic entourage in Vienna, she plans to see that Julia is sent back to England with no recommendations and no funds.

Secondary characters like Princess Katrina Kostova of Russia, Prince de Ligne, and Talleyrand the French ambassador keep the cauldrons of intrigue and gossip bubbling; while characters like Erich, the King of Thieves in Vienna and Patrick Donovan, Thomas Merritt’s valet, reveal the unsavory underbelly of the beautiful city. All of them mix and mingle to influence what happens in the lives of the hero and heroine.

How Julia and Thomas Merritt get together in Vienna while he associates with the underbelly of the city and she moves among the elite makes page-turning reading. How both of them find favor with European movers and shakers gives the reader an inside peek of how people, regardless of their station in society, strive to realize their dreams.

While the Epilogue was a real “downer” for me, the main story plot and the sub-plots that enhance it are captivating and entertain from start to finish.
