It’s 1968, and a strike by field workers in the grape fields has ripped an otherwise quiet central California town down the middle. Jack Duncan is a Delano high school senior who is on his way to earning a baseball scholarship, hoping to escape the turmoil infesting his town. His mother has kept from him the real cause of his father’s death, who was a prominent grower. But when an old friend hands Jack evidence indicating his father was murdered, he is compelled to dig deeper. This throws him and his best friend and teammate, Adrian Sanchez, whose father is a striking field worker, into the labor conflict led by Cesar Chavez. Road to Delano is the path Jack and Adrian must take to find their strength, their duty, and their destiny.

Sugar Duncan was known around Lamoille County as a gambler who could farm, but Sugar called himself a farmer who understood a sure bet. He grew up a plowboy on a hardscrabble patch of Vermont hill country and had calluses before he knew he had brains. It was in the seventh grade, in Pete Colburn’s barn, waiting out a driving rain that he found his power. While playing seven-card stud he could see the patterns, he understood the odds. He lived by the bluff, and he lived well as far as a child of the Depression could. Before he reached high school, they were calling him Sugar because he was sweet about taking their money.

While his college buddies baled hay and slopped pigs to pay their way through Ag school at Vermont U, Sugar found it more profitable to relieve the hooligans and rumrunners of their easy fortunes at the card table above Markham’s Grill over in Providence. After four years of playing cards and a new degree, he left town to farm where the land hadn’t been wiped clean of its strength.

Sugar rode west to California’s Central Valley in a Pullman with a new pair of tan and white brogues stuffed with cash packed in the bottom of his steamer. FDR had just signed the Cullen-Harrison Act ending Prohibition, and a fifth of whiskey was now as cheap as an acre of California farmland. He hadn’t any choice. Returning to Vermont would mean he’d starve. With gasoline a luxury, his father had resorted to using mules to plow his hundred acres. Milk and corn prices had fallen so sharply, a farmer could live better by killing his cows than by selling their milk. California was the place he could make a living. And he intended to make that living as a farmer— eventually.

A couple of weeks after arriving in Frisco, Sugar stood on the running board of a dusty Model T on the road leading into Delano and surveyed the flatlands of the valley planted in golden September wheat. He removed his hat, wiped his brow with the sleeve of his seersucker suit, and his instinct told him there was a sure bet.

He ensconced himself in the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill. Each night around six, he made his way downstairs to a back room where he took up residence with a fresh deck of cards and a new bottle of Jim Beam, thankfully back in production, and waited. It didn’t take long for his table to fill. About a year later, he bought his first section of land.

There is so much baggage with PSP, some days you require a bell hop. The purpose of my journal/blog is to create awareness, and to keep family and friends updated. As you read and may already know, I infuse humour here and there into the narrative. It’s a coping mechanism for me and there are times and some things you just need to laugh at. I will never be so arrogant as to minimize the effects of this disease on the patient, their family, or friends. They all struggle, and they all suffer. In book one of Permanent Hangover, all Finn Gardner wanted was a breath of fresh air when he stepped into the alley behind the Permanent Hangover Bar and Tattoo Parlor. At first sight, he’d thought it was just another homeless person to shoo away from the building. Instead, he found someone who needed help – his help. Having been given a second chance himself, Finn believes in paying it forward. The Hangover has taken more than one lost soul in over the years.

Bailey Parson needed to get away. She left her life in Chicago behind and escaped to St. Paul, but she never once thought far enough ahead to what her next step would be when she arrived there. To her, what she was running from was much more to worry about than some half-baked plan. After a month stuck on the streets, a new need arose, as the temperature started to drop – survival.

Given a chance by a stranger, Bailey works to find her way. Not only winning over customers and the staff with her smart wit and empathy, she wins over the standoffish tattoo artist. Keeping their relationship forward focused, Finn hoped to avoid both of their baggage. However, when Bailey’s past threatens to destroy everything they built together, Finn’s left with decisions to make.

Does he give up the beautiful curvy woman, the only one whose touch calms him? How much of his dark past would he need to unlock to save her? Or, will the permanent ink leave them with open wounds and no chance of healing?

“I wasn’t doing anything,” she said as she slipped the penny in her pocket.

The man turned to look behind him before taking a drink. In a tight black t-shirt, worn-in jeans and work boots, he stood a good six-three at least. From her crouched position, the tattooed man seemed massive. Although he was lean, his body had cuts from sinewy muscles.

“Didn’t think you were,” he replied in a deep baritone voice.

His jaw was outlined by a slight bit of scruff that could be a decent beard with a month or so to grow it out. Bailey swallowed hard and stuffed her hands in her pockets, fingering the penny she’d tucked there.

“Needed a break,” he replied. “I love the fall. When I come out in the summer I’m slammed with the humidity, you know?”

“Warm is good.”

“I guess. I like the brisk cool, but it could be because it gets so damn hot in there.”

The mention of warmth made Bailey wonder if the cover charge would be worth a few hours. She’d found the cheaper motels were further out of downtown, but the shelter was in the center. By the time she walked her way to a place she could afford, it would be morning and the Dorothy Day center would be open for a free breakfast.

“What’s that place like?”

“Loud tonight,” he replied. “You’ve never been?”

“No,” she shook her head a bit surprised he wasn’t catching on she was homeless.

“I’m Finn.” He extended his hand like she was a human being. The simple contact warmed her.

“Jane,” she said not wanting to let go of his warm hand, but knew she had to. “You a bartender?”

“Nah, they don’t really get breaks. I’m with the tattoo parlor.”

She finally paid attention to the sign on the back of the door that said Permanent Hangover. A whiskey bottle with two tattoo guns on either side reminded her of angel wings.

“What is this place?”

“Bar, club, whatever you want to call it with a few chairs for tattooing.” He cleared his throat. “So, Jane, I don’t suppose the last name is Doe?”

“Yes, are you psychic? Only I spell it the French way.”

“D-O-U-G-H,” he said, and she let out a laugh. “Jayne with a Y?”

A Look Back by Jeny Heckman – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jeny Heckman will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Hello everyone and thank you so much for joining me today!

When I thought of a guest blog to write I was trying to think of something different. Something that isn’t what you read every day. I know I should write about The Warrior’s Progeny, my new release. However, if you’ve been following me on my blog tour, you know quite a bit about it already now. If you haven’t, we’ve had a lot of fun, so check it out!

Anyway, in trying to think about a blog post I kept coming back to the first of the year. Do you remember that far back? It seems like so long ago now. A fellow Wild Rose Press author, Stephen King (no, not that one), sent out a call to action on our publisher’s loop. He’s from Australia and the wildfires were burning out of control then. He wanted to put an anthology together and donate all the proceeds to the wildfire victims. Stephen asked if anyone wanted to contribute to it, and so many people said yes, there was soon enough for not one anthology but three volumes, entitled Australia Burns. I work with a lot of charities and fundraisers and immediately said yes as well. Now, I just needed to write a short story.

I must have stopped and started a hundred of them trying to figure out something interesting to write for a short story. However, nothing felt right and we were on a very tight deadline. I was telling my daughter about it and she said why don’t you write about Vegas. I froze.

You see, my family was at the Route 91 concert in Las Vegas at the time of the massacre, where fifty-eight souls were murdered and eight-hundred and sixty-nine were injured, not to mention the thousands affected, mentally and emotionally. My two children were survivors of the concert. My husband and I chose not to go to the festival that night. Instead, he went to the casino floor to gamble a little, while I went up to our room in Mandalay Bay, to pack us all up for the next morning flight. I was five floors below the shooter, Stephen Paddock.

I knew at some point I’d write about the experience we all had that night but I always thought it would just be for our family and the friends we were there with that weekend. They all asked me to. I never wanted to profit from it though, so knew I probably wouldn’t be publishing it for mainstream consumption. When King, sent out that call to action and my daughter said, why don’t you write about Vegas, a flood of emotion enveloped me and after a long time I decided I would write it, because:

A) I wouldn’t be profiting from it

B) We were helpless that night and the thought of helping others in a helpless situation was appealing to me. It could benefit them.

C) The story needed to be told.

I immediately sat down and didn’t leave my office for two and a half days. The story flooded from me like a river and cleansed my heart. Obviously, I’ve never in my life experienced something like that tragedy before. Suddenly, we were all in a club. A club of other survivors having endured something horrific.

I thought I understood it. After all, when 9/11 happened or the various shootings across the country, you look at the people running, looking dazed and confused, and you empathize with them from the safety of your living room. You imagine what you’d do in a similar situation. However, you don’t realize the aftershocks of it with follow you through your life. That to most people October 1st is just another day, but to you it was the day you almost lost both of your children in a single night and, for fifty-eight sets of parents, they did. Of course, this night brought us closer together as a family, and of course, we were determined to change our lives for the better. We don’t take things for granted, not a single day. We don’t say I love you occasionally; we say it multiple times, every time we leave each other or hang up from a phone call. We make sure the batteries on our phones are charged and, if you receive two phone calls from someone in a row, you drop anything you’re doing and pick up. If you read the story you’ll see the experience became about hope, and determination and a whole lot of love.

Today, as we muddle through the craziness of our country and the pandemic, eventually we’ll come out the other side. For most of us the memories will fade and we’ll return to normal life. Maybe some things will be different, maybe they won’t. For others, their entire worlds changed with the loss of someone they loved. Their pain is real. Hopefully over the past few months you’ve been able to find joy in small things again. I mean, really, how often does the entire world get placed on hold for you to reevaluate your place within it?

It’s my hope we can all move forward with a little more compassion, and try to remember we are all human beings with things to offer.

If you want to read the story, it’s entitled “Dancing Through Tears,” and it’s in The Australia Burns Anthology, Volume Two.

May all your days be blessed, and thank you for joining me today! Want to hang out? Come visit me on my website. Thank you to Long and Short Reviews for hosting me; it’s been an honor!

Colton Stone is a newly traded tight end whose reputation is as battered as his football helmet. When he receives a vacation invitation from his new teammates, he accepts. There he collides with Dr. Lillian Morgan, a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon, and doesn’t know what to think.

A widow with two children, Lilly travels to Kauai to attend the wedding of a friend and witness the union she lost three years prior. When she meets Colt, she struggles between letting go of her perfect past for an uncertain future.

Strange events begin to occur, out of the realm of normal consciousness. Black energy touches their world and the couple become pawns of the immortal Greek gods. Is the love between them real, or part of a larger prophecy?

Enjoy an Excerpt

Colt’s body temperature heated until his helmet, now that of a Trojan, melted and became part of his skull. Painful, thick, fire plumes ignited from the sides of his head and curved toward the sky, until they solidified in a solid line down the middle of the helmet. Black snake-like smoke wafted up from the earth and encircled his ankles and wrists, locking him into place.

The smoke turned into bindings and massaged tentacles over his chest and phallus.

He looked over at Lilly, who now knelt helpless as her skin became dusky, then turned a brilliant shade of blue. However, the color became an iridescent hue that reminded him of something just outside the confines of his mind. Her skin bubbled, separated, and formed into thousands of compact hairs. Small points protruded from her shoulders and down her arms until they freed themselves from the surface of her skin, as she screamed. Several long, hollow shoots grew, lengthening into the elegant, arching rods, as more buds sprouted from them and turned into thready feathers. As the feathers lengthened, green and blue eyes opened in intervals. At a screech of transformation, Lilly turned into a peacock, whose tail plumed out in a perfect fan. A feathered diadem lifted from her skull and the beautiful eyes all blinked at him. He wanted to mate with her, devour her, possess her, and bellowed out an unearthly warrior battle cry. Breaking his bonds, he charged at her.

About the Author:Award-winning author, Jeny Heckman, was born in Bellingham, Washington, and was the youngest of two daughters. She met her husband, Jeff, in August 1992, and eloped three months later, at Magen’s Bay, on St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

She wrote her first book, the Catch, in a few short months but took several years before she gained the courage to self-publish it at her son’s urging, and her love for writing began.
In 2018, Jeny knew her next project would be a series that showed adults could have adventures in the paranormal-fantasy genre too. So, she created the Heaven & Earth series, a story of doomed Greek gods and their only salvation, their modern-day descendants. Her first book of the series, the Sea Archer, was immediately picked up by the New York publishing house, the Wild Rose Press, and won, “Best in Category” from the 2018 Chanticleer International Book Awards.

In the year 2020, Jeny released, Dancing Through Tears, a short story from the anthology, Australia Burns: Volume Two, highlighting the Route 91 massacre from the perspective of one family at the concert, and at Mandalay Bay. She also intends to release, the Warrior’s Progeny, and Dee’s Cornucopia, in 2020, continuing the Heaven & Earth Series.

Jeny lives in Washington State with her husband of over twenty-eight years.

Something I Learned While Writing My Book by Melissa Riddell – Guest Blog and Giveaway

*****
One important thing I learned with my debut novel, The Descendant, was how to create engaging characters. From the first draft to the final, polished manuscript was a bumpy road of education for me—a newbie writer. I was so ecstatic the book was picked up by a traditional publisher, I thought all the “heavy lifting”, as my editor likes to call it, was finished. Yay me! Winner winner chicken dinner, right?

Enter first round edits and a shock to the system. Basically, my editor—Satan’s Sister—(sort of kidding, I love her dearly) had me revise most of the story. But that wasn’t a big deal, because it needed more detail and an obliteration of that pesky, passive voice. No, the major overhaul which took a lot of floundering and trial and error was my protagonist’s love interest—Jareth. To paraphrase that dreaded editor phone call, he was “kind of flat and boring.”

What?! How dare she suggest that? I re-read the manuscript and realized she was right. He didn’t have his own voice or personality. How could I make Tilly fall in love with him—much less make the reader fall in love—if nothing about him stood out or changed during the story? How would my readers empathize with such a lackluster person? They wouldn’t.

So, starting from the ground up, I thought about positive traits I wanted him to have—and the not-so-positive. After all, he was too perfect in that first draft. I needed to spice him up, give him some bad habits like the rest of us, make the reader like him even if he was a bit of a pain in the behind.

I started my character creation journey with thinking about some of the characters I’ve always enjoyed, either in book or tv form. Sawyer, from Lost, immediately came to mind, and Jon Snow from Game of Thrones. Those two are about as opposite as you can get, but they gave me the groundwork to incorporate little things into his character. After a little while, his personality really blossomed, but those two were the foundation. Oh, and there’s probably a little bit of Han Solo in him, too, but I didn’t realize it at the time.

After rewriting every scene Jareth was in, which was basically chapter four until the end, he was a new man and Tilly was in love (so was I, but let’s not tell Tilly that, okay?). He was smart, sexy, and strong. He was also a braggart, broody, and morally challenged. Perfectly flawed, in my mind—and book.

Some writers like to use the enneagram traits or the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test, which defines personalities, such as ENFJ, INTJ, and the like. This is a great idea, and I encourage writers to try this. Anything that helps lay the groundwork is a tool in your arsenal. Remember, you don’t have to copy someone else’s character—and shouldn’t—you just need to concentrate on the traits you enjoyed or hated—and why. Everything else will follow, and it might save you a lot of pain and work.

She wants her world back; he wants her heart.

Tilly Morgan and her four-legged companion, Kodiak, are just trying to survive the alien arrival. Two years ago, the visitors unleashed devastation—a world-wide EMP followed by a deadly virus that wiped out more than half of humanity.

Traversing the lonely landscape, she runs into an alien on patrol with one order: eradicate all human life. A mysterious, dark-haired stranger named Jareth comes to her aid, and she reluctantly allows him to join her quest to find her sister. He even persuades her to let the damaged alien tag along against her better judgment.

As her group travels the desolate world and inches closer to her goal, she’s forced to examine her unwanted feelings for Jareth and come to terms with her heart, even if the truth threatens to destroy her and everything she’s come to believe.

Jareth clears his throat. “I know it’s not much, but I like the way it feels—the earthy smell, the chalky texture. Plus, it gets cooler back in the tunnels, which makes for great food storage.” His voice bounces from the walls, projecting the sound all around me.

Shadows cast by the edge of the distant firelight flicker across his face, revealing the hollow of a small dimple in his cheek. It’s a face that’s near perfection. Too bad he had to open his mouth and ruin it.

“Like what you see, Red?”

Oh, my God. I’m going to kill this man. Blood rushes to my face, but I’m not sure if it’s from embarrassment or anger.

Pressing my lips together, I try to focus on anything that’s not him. The earthen smell he mentioned isn’t unpleasant. It reminds me of mom’s garden; digging our hands into the dark, moist soil to plant seedlings for the summer season. It’s a satisfying, honest scent.

But I’m not about to let him know that. “Kind of smells like bat crap in here.”

Hazarding a glance at his face, he nods his head, the small smile still playing about his lips. “Oh, that’s what the smell is? I thought it was body odor and dog fur.”

I will kill the jerk in his sleep tonight.

Pivoting on the balls of my feet, I stalk back to Kodiak.

Dreadful. Hateful. Spiteful man. “I hope a stalactite falls on your head.”

It is the start of the adventures of a small black poodle, escapee from a cruel puppy mill, who is rescued by Nicole Marcel, a pretty girl singer in the City of Paris. The two become inseparable.

The little dog has an animal intelligence and a tremendous sense of smell, and proceeds to solve a murder, and other crimes by nasal prowess. Mimi gains celebrity status, as does her PERSON, Nicole.

It is a Cozy Mystery like no other!

In book two, titled “Mimi’s Paris Dilemma,” Mimi’s reputation, (and that of Nicole’s), is sullied by an unfair assessment by the public. The little dog slowly regains status by solving other crimes.

Enjoy an Excerpt

Mimi was fortunate enough to live in Paris, and she knew it. She, and her ‘person’ resided in a petite hotel on the Left Bank. That ‘person’ was young and pretty and would leash Mimi for walks.

In winter, Mimi wore a pink wool coat with a tiny, white handkerchief peeking out from a pocket on the back. It was so handsome against her jet -black toy-poodle hair. Of course, in warm weather, she only sported the leash.

How proud was Mimi to parade along the rues and boulevards. All of 12 inches long and perhaps 10 inches high, she walked with such elan, that people noticed her. She liked that. But most of all, Mimi reveled in the fact that she had been lucky enough to be endowed with a moist, black muzzle with two intense nostrils that provided her with a world of sensuality.

The scent of companion dogs with messages left behind, greeted her at every corner. The odor of soupe a l’oignon or boeuf, simmering in wine, emerged from the bistros as the two passed by, one two legged, the other on four. Oh, and to pass a fromagerie, was a special delight. The smell of the pungent cheeses from across the country within the little store could not be contained, and all of France was laid before Mimi’s hungry little nose.

Occasionally, Mimi was lucky enough to find a morsel of crepe au sucre on the rue Cler, inadvertently dropped by a hungry tourist who had been munching while he walked. Ah, life was good. What a lucky dog am I, was her constant thought.

Mimi knew she was smart, and she knew her sense of smell was extraordinary, even for a dog. She could define with her nose every herbal addition to a stew of veal with sage, or rosemary in a gigot d’agneau. Oh, the herbal names meant nothing, but the specific tingle in her nostrils made everything so clear, distinct and utterly delicious.

But not this time. This was a dark odor. It was the smell of blood.

ParisIn “Eye of the Beholder,” completed after the memoir, Elizabeth Cooke writes in rather irreverent terms, of the lives of six artists and the most compelling muse in each of their lives: next came, “A Shadow Romance,” an odyssey of an unfulfilled love affair between a mature New York City couple: then, the four “Hotel” books. She has just completed “How To Game People Without Even Trying,” the true story (fictionalized) of the murder of her second husband in his Paris apartment. A fifth ‘hotel’ book, titled “Rendezvous at a Small Hotel” has just been released. The sixth hotel book, “Intrigue at a Small Hotel” has received top honors from The Paris Book Festival for 2016. The seventh and final in the hotel series, “The Hotel Marcel Dining Club” is currently available.

For her, there is great joy in having the gift of expression that writing provides, and this is reflected in her rather prolific output.

When four maidels join forces to turn an abandoned barn into an Amish marketplace, the unmarried women have community in mind. But their fledgling enterprise promises to reap surprising rewards for each in turn, including the gift of unexpected love . . .

For Regina Miller, the new Morning Star Marketplace is a chance to share her secret work with the world—without revealing herself. Old Order Amish forbid the creation of art without purpose, but without a husband, Regina has been free to explore the joy of painting in her attic. Yet when Gabe Flaud’s curiosity leads him to speculate that Regina herself is the painter, the full weight of their community’s judgement falls on her shoulders. When Gabe stands up to defend Regina, questioning the Order’s restrictions, he reveals his own guilty secret and is shunned along with her. Forced to turn to each other for companionship, the young couple must learn to balance their own needs with their deep faith … and a love that will show them all things are possible.

April had painted the Missouri countryside with a palette of vibrant greens and gentle pastels only God Himself could create. The pastures were lush with new grass, and the dogwood and redbud trees added splashes of pink, cream, and fuchsia to the untamed landscape. Jo Fussner and her four maidel friends were on their afternoon walk, soaking up the midday sunshine. An occasional car passed, but otherwise, Morning Star seemed to be nodding off for its Sunday nap.

As they reached the edge of town, Jo gazed at a dilapidated white stable that sat back from the road. The plank fence around it was also in a sorry state of disrepair. The harsh winter hadn’t done the stable any favors, and Jo thought the place looked sadder than usual as the breeze riffled some of its loose shingles.

The wooden sign posted on the fence alongside the gate startled her. “Did you know this place was for sale?” Jo blurted. “I haven’t seen this sign before.”

“Me neither,” Molly Helfing replied. She glanced at her rail-thin twin sister, Marietta, who was recovering from chemo treatments. “Last I knew, the Clementi fellow who owned this property died in the nursing home—”

An idea was spinning in Jo’s head—an adventurous, totally impractical idea—as she gazed at the long white stable with its peeling paint and missing boards. Her longtime friends would think she was ferhoodled, yet her imagination was running wild with possibilities.

“The Clementi kids must’ve decided to sell the place rather than keep it in the family,” redheaded Regina Miller remarked. “I can’t think it’ll bring much, though, run-down as it is.”

“Anybody who bought it would have to invest a lot of money to make it usable as a stable again,” Lydianne Christner said with a shake of her head.

“But wouldn’t it make a great place for some shops?” Jo blurted out. “You Helfings could sell your homemade noodles, and Mamm and I would have more space to display our bakery stuff and our summer produce—and we could get other local folks to rent spaces, and—and it’s on the main highway! Think of how much more business we’d attract here than we do at the roadside stands in our yards.”

Her friends stared at her as though she’d sprouted a second head.

Memoir of a Hockey Nobody by Jerry Hack — guest post and giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jerry Hack will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Background of the Book
The background for the book begins when I was 9. At the time I was the youngest of four children and the only boy. My oldest sister Marlene was watching the NHL Stanley Cup Finals between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Montreal Canadiens. I walked into the room and saw what was on the TV and decided to sit with her and watch. Marlene was my hero. I thought she was the smartest person alive and I found her endlessly interesting and entertaining. I loved her as much as is humanly possible for somebody to love another. She was almost seven years older than me and instead of being my sister, she was more like a second mom. If I ever did anything of note, I always wanted to show or tell her first. In return, she was my cheerleader. Always encouraging me and happy whenever I accomplished the smallest achievement. When I learned how to ride a bike she was jumping up and down and clapping like I had just won the Tour de France. I absolutely hated to disappoint her. I would rather chew glass.

While we were watching the games in 1971, I was mesmerized by the two goalies. Ken Dryden and Tony Esposito. I knew what I my life’s ambition was to be at that moment in time. I was born to be a goalie. From that time on, I didn’t want to do anything else. I lived it and breathed it. It became my obsession for the next 45 years. I wasn’t able to play ice hockey as it was very expensive, and with 5 kids to raise (my younger sister was born in September 1971) it just wasn’t a possibility. But street hockey was another matter. All my friends seemed to be in the same boat. None of them played ice hockey but loved playing street hockey. It stayed that way until I was 18 and out of high school for a year. Through a twist of fate, I was able to join a men’s recreational ice hockey team (most people refer to it as “beer league”). I didn’t even know how to skate. People would tell me that the goalie has to be the best skater on the team. Let me tell you, I was far from being the best skater. I probably was 10 years behind the second worst skater on the team. I found myself always falling backwards. Somebody would be winding up for a slapshot and I would be flat on my back waving my hands in the air. My dream was to get paid to play hockey. And behind the scenes, there was always Marlene, cheering me on.

When a boy is born (since Manon Rheaume is the only female to ever play in an NHL pre-season game, we’ll stipulate the odds are even greater for girls) and starts playing ice hockey at the age of 5 or 6, his odds of making it to the NHL are about 0.1%. I was starting at the age of 18, so the odds of me making it were astronomical, but I didn’t care. I was finally doing what I was born to do. I played whenever I could, wherever I could, with whomever I could. Someone I knew referred to me as a “hockey whore” because I would play with anyone. As years went by, I got better and better and finally realized my dream of getting paid to play hockey. I didn’t make it to the NHL, but I got close enough. I met a lot of amazing people.

Best part is, I got to tell Marlene all about it. She was so proud of me. The worst part is, she only got to see me play one time. She had always planned on seeing me play more often, but our schedules just never seemed to jive. Marlene passed away on August 12th, 2005 from cancer. It is the toughest thing I have ever had to deal with. For the next five years, the grief was always with me, just below the surface, and I always felt that I could break down at any time. Whenever I played after that, I was hoping that she was watching and that she was proud of me. My book is, in part, dedicated to my big sister Marlene. She is, and always will be, my hero.

Jerry Hack

Memoir of a Hockey Nobody is the unlikely true story of an average Canadian kid who grew up playing street hockey. Although he didn’t learn how to skate until his late teens, he took a shot at entering the world of professional ice hockey with, shall we say, haphazard results.

This is an “against all odds” tale of one man’s journey from Vancouver, to all over Western Canada, California, The Yukon, and Alaska. Seemingly blocked at every turn, from managers who believed that someone who came from such humble beginnings couldn’t be any good, to coaches who would rather see big names with bigger reputations. It’s a story of tragedy, triumph and determination. A roller coaster ride with hilarious anecdotes of all the characters he met along the way.

This is a tale for those who dare to live their dream!

In the spring of 1980, the New York Islanders won the Stanley Cup, beating the Philadelphia Flyers in 6 games. Bob Nystrom scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in overtime. I was happy, because finally someone other than the Montreal Canadiens won the cup. Despite rooting for the Canadiens when I was nine, I had grown to hate them. I was a diehard Vancouver Canucks fan by then. The Canadiens just kept on winning and winning. I was so tired of watching them win all the time. four straight years they won the cup without breaking a sweat. Little did I know that the Islanders were now on their way to doing the exact same thing. I would grow to hate them too. It was about a month after the Islanders had their first parade that I was over at the Aitken’s house. John and I still hung out, but not as often as in the past. At this time, I was eighteen and had my own vehicle, (a 1969 Datsun pickup). We were discussing how happy we both were that the Montreal dynasty was seemingly over, when the topic of his hockey team came up. He was always playing in one beer league or another. (At one time he played in the N.H.L. The “Natural Hockey League”) At this time he was playing on a team called the Burnaby Kings, and they were playing at the Columbian 4 Rinks. At one time, this was the largest indoor hockey arena in the world, and was even in the Guinness Book of World Records. As it turned out, the Kings were renting one of the rinks once a week, all summer long. Summer hockey was a new thing, all the other rinks became lacrosse rinks for the summer. John was telling me how terrible their goalie was. The guy’s name was Lonnie. I don’t remember his last name. John was telling me that the guy was the worst goalie he had ever played with. They had nicknamed him “Red Light Lonnie,” because he would let in so many goals. He said that Lonnie was so short that shots would regularly hit him in the head and deflect into the net. One time John said that the puck had been shot into the corner and Lonnie went to go get it, fell down, and while he was trying to get up, the puck went up on edge and had such spin on it after it hit the boards, that it reversed itself and curved right into the net. John said Lonnie was like “Bad Luck Schleprock” of the Flintstones.

About the Author: I was born and raised in Burnaby, British Columbia. My sisters and I were raised by hard-working blue collar parents. We were and are a tight knit family. I grew up loving sports but hockey most of all. In fact, it was my passion. I read about it, watched it and played it. I was an average student and a good athlete. I could play most sports without looking out of place. But I was born to be a goalie. I graduated from high school in 1979 and a year later began my journey playing ice hockey. 40 years later, I am happily married with a 12 year old daughter and loving life more than ever.

THOMAS PINKERTON PAINE JOINS THE FIRST DIVISION—APRIL 1918
“OVER THERE”—George M. Cohan

Thomas left on a troopship for France. He stayed on deck the entire time, except for meals, to minimize his contact in a closely packed ship. One of his goals was to return to his family by avoiding the diseases so easily contracted in war zones. He arrived in St. Nazaire, France, and was rapidly transported in a second-class passenger coach, while enlisted men rode in boxcars.

Thomas arrived at the front at a time that the First Division was the only fully trained American division in France. They had already lost a disproportionate number of junior officers in their first operational missions. Thomas was immediately assigned as a platoon leader in the 1/26th. He had been in France for less than one month, but he was about to engage in his first combat mission. The mission was to capture the town of Cantigny and the surrounding high ground.

On May 27, 1918, the division moved into its attack positions, and the next morning commenced their attack on the German positions in and around Cantigny. As the First Division advanced, German machine-gunners delivered heavy fire, killing three officers in Company A. The advance halted, while the advance party was pinned down. Until the machine guns were taken out, the First Division could not move. Second Lt. Paine gathered five volunteers, all armed with automatic rifles and grenades.

Thomas had this exact tactical problem while he trained in Ithaca. He had his remaining men deliver heavy fire on the machine gun positions, while his team pulled back and circled the Germans’ flank. They advanced slowly, then charged the bunkers, using their grenades first. When the grenades flushed out those who were not dead, the men fired their automatic rifles, killing the rest of the gunners and their support. Thomas’ and his men’s heroism would be recognized after the battle—if they were still alive.

So…Is Alexa Really Your Friend?

Hmmm…Friend?

She seems nice and helpful and all: “Alexa, what’s the weather today?”

And she’s not alone. They are ALL right there, sitting in an innocent pod on the table. Or hiding behind a friendly screen on your phone or ready to help on your tablet computer. Alexa…Siri…Cortana…and “Hey, Google!”

The corporate monsters of the Information Age.

“Hey, Siri. How do I get to the nearest emergency room?”

She’ll tell you how to get there in the three fastest ways and point out the directions on a map. And, yeah, it’s kind of annoying that you’ll start seeing advertisements from local hospitals on your web browser…over and over and over, again.

Just trying to be helpful.

Listen to billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk: “With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon.”

And that’s what that friendly little voice is all about: Artificial Intelligence.

“Hey, Cortana, what does the word ‘paranoid’ mean?”

It’s not paranoid if they are really out to get you—or your money.

Right now, they’re safe.  They can’t really go anywhere unless you move them.  But, remember, all of them—Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft—are heavily into chasing driverless cars.

Hey, Google. What did Forbes say about Amazon coming out with a driverless car?

“The great disruptor Amazon has taken its talent to the autonomous vehicles space with the purchase of  Zoox, led by CEO Aicha Evans for $1.2 billion. Amazon plans to work with Zoox to create a fleet of self-driving taxis, in competition with Alphabet’s Waymo.” (July 7, 2020)

And after that? They are going to put arms and legs on their cute little voice pods:

Add a little Dermaloy skin, a friendly, movie-star face and, there you go, we’re right there at the beginning of the Murder by Munchausen Series.

So, do I think Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft will try to kill you in your sleep?  Nah, they’re more interested in your money than anything else—which may be unsavory, but not demonic.

And it’s not really Artificial Intelligence that’s bad. I really think it is just the margarine of brainpower.

It is the ones you don’t see who will get you…and there, in the human heart, lies the devil.

This particular Android Subject apparently went off the rails and killed a luckless pedestrian on his way to a bodega for some iced tea or bottled water to quench his thirst. A one-in-a-million occurrence, but every so often it still happens. Anyone who believes technology is infallible is a fool. The incident didn’t appear all that nefarious when first reported, but shortly thereafter the Atlas data stream went dark and patrol called our unit in. It quickly became obvious we were dealing with a malware hit, not a malfunction. The luckless pedestrian was actually not so luckless, being on what appeared to be the winning side of a particularly nasty termination suit with his ex, who we suspected had outsourced the final settlement to extra-judicial parties.

It might not make sense, but the beloved Media tags it “Murder by Munchausen.” For a price, there are hackers out there who will reprogram a synthoid to do your dirty work. The bad news: no fingerprints or DNA left at the crime scene. The good news—at least for us—is that they’re like missiles: once they hit their target, they’re usually as harmless as empty brass. The trick is to get them before they melt down their core OS data, so you can get the unit into forensics for analysis and, hopefully, an arrest.
