I’m a sucker for a book with cats. I saw this one had a gray tabby and I knew I wanted to read it. Marian Babson is a new to me author, so I wasn’t sure what I was in for with this book. It was certainly a ride.

The writing flowed well for the most part. Every so often, it’d get clunky, but it wasn’t enough to deter me. I wanted to know what would happen next and got emotionally involved with the characters. I wanted to know what would happen to Sally (Arthur’s cat), Sylvester (the imposter being pushed as Sally) and Sassy (yet another imposter). I mean, people went hunting for cats to try say they have Sally so they get the inheritance. It was nuts. But it roped me in. I didn’t want to see the cats get hurt.

I wasn’t wild about Annabel, the gossip hunter/faux interior designer/amateur detective. She seemed to drink an awful lot during the story and a lot while she was on the job. I don’t know. It just turned me off a bit as a reader.

That said, this was a cute read and the cats were adorable. I loved Sassy and her…er… sass. She was adorable.

If you’re wanting a mystery that takes a little bit to get into, but is worth the read, then this might be the one for you.

Myrtle was a well rounded and likeable main character. I appreciated the fact that she wasn’t always confident in her decisions, whether they were small ones like what to eat while trying to trim up or big ones like which clues to follow in the case of her aunt’s mysterious death. Seeing her struggle in this area made her feel relatable to me. She seemed like a perfectly ordinary person in the very best sense of that phrase.

One of the most interesting parts of the storyline had to do with Myrtle’s family tree. She was adopted by Aunt Eve as a young child. Luckily, her aunt had a great deal of information about where their ancestors came from and what sort of folks they were. It was fascinating to get to know their family better. While I sure did wonder why Myrtle wasn’t taught many of these things early in life due to her aunt’s obvious attraction to the subject, I’m hoping that any sequels will dive into this topic on a deeper level. There was definitely a lot of space left to explore here.

This book had a large cast of characters that Ms. Hansen did a fantastic job of keeping organized for the audience. While I did take notes of who everyone was and how they were connected to each other, the storyline itself provided prompts about this when necessary as well. I always knew who everyone was, and that’s important when there are a lot of characters running around whose relationships with one another are crucial in order to understand what’s going on.

There was so much care and attention put into the mystery elements of the plot. It was a great deal of fun to try to figure out who killed the sheriff, how they did it, and why they did it. I thought the number of clues was perfect, and I enjoyed the couple of red herrings the author threw in there was well to keep the audience on our toes.

One thing I would have liked to see more time spent on was the character development. Since this is the first instalment in a series, my hope is that the sequels will give the recurring characters a chance to show off sides of their personalities the audience hasn’t seen yet and grow as individuals as a result of their experiences in life. There is so much room for growth here. It makes me excited to see what comes next!

The world building was well done. Sweet Grove felt like many of the small towns I’ve lived in. It had a strong sense of community that supported every member when they needed it. This was also a place where gossip travelled at the speed of light and where having any semblance of a private life was all but impossible. I enjoyed seeing the characters navigate the benefits and drawbacks of living in a place where everyone knows their neighbors so intimately.

Everyone who enjoys small town mysteries should give The Mint Julep Murder a try.

This is my new favorite author. His writing style drew me in. He has a wonderful talent for telling a story but also delivering the back story right along with it that helps deliver more about the characters, why the character is taking a certain action or it helped in giving me a more in depth understanding as the back story is so effortlessly tied into the storyline.

The description of the town reveals that the author took time to study the location and learn about the customs of the community. Reading the author’s descriptive words I can picture many of the scenes. This is an excellent novel that I imagine captures the landscape of Isle of Lewis very well.

The book wasn’t wordy nor did it deliver unnecessary fillers. The tempo was perfect. Though Fin was there to investigate a murder, the story goes into depth about his youth and how he ended up where he is now. I can try to explain it but you may not understand until you read the story. This book is more than the suspense of solving a murder like some author’s focus on. If you prefer your crime novels to focus solely on the investigation of solving the case this is not the book for you. There is a secret which is eventually exposed and this leads to the motive for the murder. Once this secret is revealed Fin’s investigations speeds up as he starts to put the pieces together.

The story is dark and gloomy but memorable. At times I forgot about the murder investigation and ended up focused so much on Fin’s life. I didn’t favor any character over another. I felt sorry for them all. The author impressively builds the character with subtle layers and when he’s done they are hard to part with. Fin having very recently lost his 8 year old son and facing the breakdown of his marriage he carried a sadness about him. And as I read about his youth his life seemed to have lacked love and bonding. While reading I didn’t realize this but now as I reflect on the story as a whole I feel sorry for Fin. While reading I felt like the towns people, looking up to Fin and seeing him as one that got out of the town and made something of himself despite his upbringing.

I can’t wait to get started on the next installment of the series. The author’s writing is incredible storytelling that should not be missed.

A quick moving read. An enjoyable story about a young lady with an over-bearing father and a huge desire to be a Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple of some sort. Actually it sounds as if I’m making light and yet this joking and disbelief is something Mary MacDougall goes through with many of the people she deals with. The idea of a woman sleuth in 1902 is beyond comprehension to both men and women.

This is a light, clean, mystery. I had no trouble finishing it in a few hours and while not deep, it always kept my attention. I don’t think this is listed as a YA genre, but I think it can be read by both teens and adults. It’s a feel-good type mystery and we all need to feel good now and then, don’t we?

Richard Audry (a pen name for D. R. Martin) has made his characters each have a unique personality which I think often makes them seem more real. He’s created a well-written and entertaining story.

This is Book 4 in a series titled “ Mary MacDougall Mysteries”. Audry also has another series published. All of his books have good reviews.

This forceful pull between them is what keeps the pages turning, along with the fast paced plot that gives us more than enough twists to keep us on our toes.

After finishing this novel in a day and a half, pausing only briefly for sleep, I’m so invested in the lives and the story of the characters that I have to remind myself that I have already completed the book, seeing as I am still caught up in the excitement of wanting to know what happens next. I may just have to read it again immediately to keep myself at bay!

Ripple Through Time not only gives readers a fast paced mystery packed inside of some of our wildest fantasies, but it also delivers an sensual slow-burn romance that commands the reader’s attention at the simple mention of our main characters’ names on the same page together. Cassandra Jamison does an excellent job of working in both time periods, and makes an unbelievable tale feel realistic and natural within the world of her story. The passion Jamison has for writing is felt within the love that this story is unfolding, and I absolutely cannot wait to read more from her. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book. I found this to be an interesting short story set not too far into the future. Told in the first person I was intrigued in that there is enough future-type of tech to make this feel a bit of a Sci-Fi story but yet still remain close enough to the present to not stretch readers who usually wouldn’t delve into the realms of Sci-Fi stories. While it took quite some time (almost half the short story) for the mystery/suspense aspect of the plot to really get going I thought that it was well thought out. Although initially I found the plot a little murky and hard to understand I was pleased that this quickly smoothed out and it became a lot clearer and the pace picked up. Readers who enjoy futuristic thrillers should find this an interesting and quick read.

I thought Leigh and Alexei’s characters were interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed that neither of them were as simple or straight-forward as I expected. I really wish the story had a bit more time to flesh out both of their characters and give a more solid grounding to their actions. A few times I had to pause and go back to re-read as I didn’t fully comprehend why they sometimes acted as they did. I feel if the author had spent a bit more time rounding out both Alexei and Leigh’s characters and showing us the reasons and thinking behind their actions then this would have allowed me as the reader to more fully understand each of their motivations.

That said I think the fast pace of the story helped sell the action aspect to the story and helped make the reader feel that this was a roller coaster that had simply gone out of control. While I personally found there was a solid lead-up to Leigh’s final actions and they were explained quite well, I’m not certain all readers will feel the same way. Such a polarizing action will likely split many readers and while many will find them justified I think many equally will feel that Leigh crossed a line.

Futuristic and yet far too believable, this is an interesting Sci-Fi story with a good, solid mystery aspect to it. A quick and heart-pounding read I feel it should appeal to a wide range of readers.

Horror wasn’t a genre I was expecting to find in this anthology. That made “So Long” an unexpected treat! This tale was composed of a series of voicemails left at the apartment of a woman who had completely withdrawn from the outside world for reasons that were soon made clear. While I do wish some of her doctor’s actions were explained better, I still had a wonderful time slowly unravelling the mystery of why she wasn’t responding to calls from her employer, relatives, and other folks in her life who were perplexed by her disappearance.

“Pink Hearts Pierced by Arrows” followed a character named Crystal whose best friend was worried about infidelity. What I liked the most about the plot from that point was how much it twisted and turned around as Crystal tried to find out what was really going on in her friend’s life and marriage. Even though I did have a hunch about what was happening, it was still a great deal of fun to see if my prediction was correct.

Heartbreaks & Half-Truths: 22 Stories of Mystery & Suspense was a rock solid anthology that everyone who loves this genre should check out.

Her boss, McKay, is having her become a member of a mixed team of humans and supernatural creatures. This team is going to be a trial run to see just how well it could work out, maybe better than just a human force.

Jake Huang, a former Navy SEAL, cop, and a werewolf, had been chosen to be the pack/team leader as he has the most experience leading a team besides Jes, and Jes doesn’t know as much as he does about how to work with other supernatural creatures. He meets the rest of his team: A female Alpha werewolf named Harley Grant, a male omega werewolf named Caleb Lynch, along with a human named Forrest Albright and a woman with a cool ability named Mistal Swanson.

The author has some great new ideas and changes to the ‘normal’ ideals of a werewolf and an ability that I think is been overlooked for a long time. The author has her werewolf’s eyes change color based on what type they are: gold for Alpha, blue for Beta, and green for Omega. Also, their Omegas are completely different from others I have read about. They are considered loners, and much closer to their animal side which can cause them to have control issues. Betas rely on their Alpha’s to protect them, although they will protect themselves if it is an extreme issue. This author’s werewolves are born with a genetic abnormality that causes them to change into their were form after trauma.

Each character has their own personalities, which actually seems to make the team better. Jake is a strong man, full of compassion, the ability to make choices quickly, and had that special something that pulled people together. As an Alpha, he felt the need to protect his people–even Caleb who could be a trial. Jes is a wonderful woman that anyone would be proud to have on their team. She has nerves of steel, the ability like Jake to take in a situation and make a quick decision. She does have her faults. She doesn’t trust people easily as she has lost many teammates.

The plot is full of suspense, action, shoot-outs, evil plots, and strange supernatural creatures that are supposed to not exist. I liked just how matter-of-fact the werewolves find it to kill, especially if they are threatening someone they consider theirs. Also, the way they fight is much different as they actually use and prefer guns to teeth and claws if they can help it. The end was rather explosive, and I loved it. The romance between Jes and Jake was sweet and hot, I love the soulmate angle and just how protective they both were. It was rather fun watching them squirm whenever they were apart, not wanting to lose the other. I adore just how protective Jake was through the story. He hates to let her out of his sight. Unfortunately, their romance had to take a back seat to the mission. In the end they became a strong family, ready and willing to take on the world.

I loved this plot and the variants that the author added about werewolves and other abilities and creatures. It was interesting watching the team build themselves into a pack, ready and willing to kill whoever tried to hurt one of theirs. The action was incredibly done, and I was drawn along for the ride, feeling their adrenaline and shame when their missions kept falling apart. Recommended.

Did she have a vision, or is she somehow involved in the crime?

Sariah is a tough character to figure out. She manages to be both innocent and mysterious. Like Jesse, I wanted to believe her claims of having seen the killer in a vision, but something about her just didn’t seem right. Jesse tries to keep his relationship with Sariah professional, but something about her draws him in. Before he knows it, he’s falling in love with her. Their awkward flirty banter was cute at first, but her lack of honesty made natural interactions between them almost impossible. Consequently, it was hard for me to relax and enjoy their relationship. It just felt uncomfortable after a while. I shared Jesse’s frustration with Sariah’s secrecy. As I read, I continued to hope that Sariah would open up to Jesse before it was too late.

Ms. Griffin kept me guessing as I read. I was never quite sure how involved Sariah was in the mystery until everything about her past was finally revealed. My heart broke for Jesse when he realized how little he really knew about Sariah. Despite this issue, I am pleased to say I have a lot of hope for Jesse and Sariah. By the end of the book, Sariah is in a much better place. In the future, I believe she will be more open with Jesse. They have been given a second chance and I believe they will use it wisely.

I enjoyed reading Guilty Knowledge. The mystery is interesting, and Jesse and Sariah’s happy ending makes their bumpy beginning worth it. I recommend it to fans of romantic suspense looking for a quick read.
