“You know, some people like to give others the benefit of the doubt and get to know them before assuming the worst.”

Olivia snatched the cherry from the shake that I’d set on the edge of my plate. “Some of us prefer to avoid disappointment. I’ll keep my assumptions until people prove me wrong.”

At least she was honest, I thought, oddly envious of the cherry stem as she pressed her tongue against it. “Challenge accepted.”

We left the diner, but the drive home was far too short.

“Thank you for the ride,” she said, already clutching her racket and duffel bag before I even slowed to a complete stop in front of her apartment.

“And for the excellent meal, right?” I added.

She stared dryly. “I’ll thank you for the food when you thank me for not pressing charges on the whole kidnapping front.”

I bit back a smile. Even pissed off, Olivia was captivating. “This was fun. Why haven’t we hung out before?”

“Because we have nothing in common.”

“Not true. There’s tennis, lame business majors, and douchebag fathers.”

Olivia gazed back at me and for the briefest of moments, I thought she would say something meaningful, but instead she just shook her head, dismissing whatever idea had crossed her intriguing mind.

“You can’t possibly want to spend more time with me. I’ve been a total bitch to you all afternoon.”

I wasn’t about to deny that last part, so instead I pushed my luck with a bad joke. “We could move into the back seat and you could make it up to me,” I said, wiggling my eyebrows seductively.

I’d hoped for a snarky comeback, but instead she just rolled her eyes and chuckled. “I’ll see you at practice,” she mumbled, climbing out of the car.

Luca opened his mouth to speak, but I shook my head and jogged back to the chairs.

“Giada, wait.”

I ignored him and started towards the villa.

He reached for my wrist as he caught me. “Giada Francesca, I said wait!”

I gazed up to face him. “Well, maybe I don’t do everything you say!”

From the look in his eyes, I nearly thought he might hit me, but instead, he just laughed.

I sighed. “Great, glad I’m so amusing to you.”

“Giada, come on, baby. You are amusing to me. You are everything to me. How do you not see that?”

Something about his tone made me pause.

“I didn’t mean I’m not interested in you, only that I was trying to be respectful and give you time to get over Adrian.”

“By kissing me?”

“I couldn’t help it, Giada. You are so beautiful. I could look at your eyes for days and when they’re filled with sadness…”

Luca traced my lips with his finger. “Your lips are my most favorite thing about you. Quite possibly my favorite place in the world.”

“My lips aren’t even a place,” I said, wondering if he’d been in Italy so long that he was starting to forget his English translations.

“They are. I would spend all day in them if you’d let me.” He winked, filling my head with all sorts of dirty connotations.

I sighed and broke the stare. “I just can’t tell with you.”

“What?”

“Do you just want to get me in bed? You want me to admit I like you so you can cross me off your list of conquests?”

Luca cocked his head to the side. “Yes, to both of those things. But then I want to spend every day loving you until you’re old and no longer more attractive than me.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Giada, look at me. I know you’re still mad about how things ended years ago, and you’re right to be. I screwed up, and I’m sorry. But I’m not a kid anymore, and I still want you more than I’ve ever wanted anything else in my life. You can’t deny we make sense together. You won’t have to change a thing to be with me. We fit.”

I swore under my breath before complying and looking up at him. “You’re too much, Luca.”

“Without you, amore mio, I’ll never be enough.”

My favorite coffee shop was a block from the subway station, and as soon as I reached the street level, I felt the rain. It fell in sheets, soaking everything and everyone in its path. It was a quiet shower, not just in the way it barely made a sound as it pelted the concrete and metal comprising Midtown West Manhattan, but also as it seemed to mute the normal noises we New Yorkers expected of our surroundings…the honking, the chatting, the clanking of machinery.

I smiled at the beauty of it, but once the first drop hit my hair, I shrieked and ran as fast as my Louboutin heels could carry me. Traffic forced me to stop at the next light, but I resumed my dash as soon as the intersection cleared, weaving haphazardly amidst a crowd of people holding everything from newspapers and briefcases over their heads. I was comforted only by the fact that clearly, no one else had thought to bring an umbrella today either.

Finally, with the coffee shop in sight, I smiled again, only to have the heel of my shoe stick in a drainage grate.

I grunted, apologized to the people whose path I was blocking, and tugged, but the shoe stuck firmly. I needed a better angle to unwedge the shoe, and the only way to achieve that would involve stepping out of the shoe and placing my bare foot on the dirty sidewalk. Unable to stomach that option, I futilely wrenched harder. My clothes and hair were already drenched, and the water pooling around my forehead was starting to drip into my eyes and obscure my view of the trapped shoe. My pride had taken a hit, but I had to retrieve my shoe without harming it. Sure, it was last year’s design that I’d bought on sale, but any Louboutin, even one on sale, was a chunk of change.

Suddenly, the rain stopped. I glanced up, as though expecting to see that God himself had performed this valued miracle, but instead, I simply saw an umbrella held firmly over my head. A man, the bearer of the umbrella, crouched down beside me.

“Let me try,” he offered, in a dreamy British accent. With a quick twist of his wrist, the shoe popped free. I stumbled backwards as the shoe came loose, and the man steadied me gracefully, a quick “whoopsie daisy,” escaping his lips.
