Suzanne Evans is eking out a simple existence waiting tables at the Decklin Café in 1850’s Pennsylvania, hoping to save enough funds to open a bakery of her own. Buoyed by secret meetings with Deputy Andrew Powers, she presses on even when her cruel boss puts her down for being black and a former whore.

As a black lawman, Andrew takes his duties seriously yet he can’t shake his desire for Suzanne. Slipping away from his post for a few torrid moments with her keeps him sane even as wanting her drives him toward madness.

When Decklin Café burns to the ground Suzanne’s bigoted boss accuses her of arson and forces Andrew to arrest her. If she’s found guilty, she may face the hangman’s noose. Angst, fear and mistrust drive a wedge between the two lovers. But love has a way of fighting back and heat doesn’t always come from a fire.

Deputy’s Desire opens up during the lunch rush at Decklin Cafe, which is owned by Leslie Decklin and operated by her son Brian. Brian isn’t the friendliest boss, nor is he the fairest to his employees. He finds favor with young Maggie and deeply resents his mother for hiring lowly ex-prostitute Suzanne Evans.

One night, Suzanne is doing her nightly closing duties at the cafe and notices a fire has started. She runs to the local sheriff office to notify them of the fire, and during her running she cuts her foot pretty badly. Brian blames Suzanne for starting the fire, causing a conflict between Suzanne and Deputy Andrew Powers, who desires her.

Deputy’s Desire is a quick and easy read. It was pretty simple, and there wasn’t much depth to the plot. The majority of the story wasn’t so much about the mystery of the arsonist but about the desires of Deputy Powers. I enjoyed the author’s writing style; how she has the right amount of dialog and narrative summary. Her way of telling a story seemed so effortless and natural. Even with the plot being a little weak the strong writing kept me reading.

I found it surprising how the deputy broke the law by acting on his desires for Suzanne. Yes this is an erotic romance, so I can overlook the part where they haven’t built a relationship and only sexual attraction matters, but he is painted as a lawman put in a position to up hold the law not break it because of fleshly desires.

I admire the author for mentioning women in roles such as a lawyer and sitting mayor in her story, set in 1850. I tried not to, but ended up doing a Google search and found that the first female lawyer wasn’t until 1869 and the first female mayor wasn’t recorded until 1887. Also, the author mentioned (blue) jeans and a Google search shows jeans were invented in 1873.  So, these historical anachronisms bothered me a bit.

The plot wasn’t complex, but the author definitely has a talent for writing and telling a story. Yes a few things bothered me, but I have read other novels by this author that were very enjoyable and I will continue to read the author’s future work.

With the killer taking over her mind, she must somehow stop him before she becomes his next victim.

Conduit is an entertaining novel with a very good plot that would be perfect for the movie screen. Though it may sound kind of warped I couldn’t put the book down when the killer was stalking his next victim. The book kept my interest and had me ready to see what would happen next. Angie Martin shows her talent and her skills as an author in this well crafted novel of a serial killer’s psychotic mind and the trail of bodies he leave in order to get to the woman he wants. I found the book easy to read. The author has a way of writing that flowed, and gave a visual that I could actually picture as I read. The characters were well developed and likable. The villain of the novel, David Noakes is well developed with a believable malicious and satanic mind.

There is no mystery in the novel as to who the killer is, we already know. It’s more about will the killer get to his intended target? This is a novel of kidnapping, torture and murder so this type of subject matter may not be for the faint of heart.

I enjoyed the clean storyline and how the author did not fall into societies trend of boy meets girls, and they jump into bed. I appreciated reading a book where the couple obviously has a very strong attraction between each other but were willing to wait before introducing the physical part into their relationship. I enjoyed the relationship between Detective Lionel Edwards and his wife Barbara. They have been married for years, and being in the line of work as a detective the life span of a marriage isn’t that long. But Lionel and his wife have found a balance that works for them. They also were an example to the other couples in the book.

Conduit is a filling novel that an avid reader like myself enjoy finding. I am a happy reader that will be looking to see what else Angie Martin has written and I definitely will be adding her to my authors to follow list.
