The Texter

Fallen homicide detective, Jack Slaughter, closed the door on the home where his perfect family had been brutally snatched from him. Moving across the city, he works as a private investigator to fund his own investigation into what happened to his family—who killed his little girl, Zoë, and where is his wife, Leah?

Every three month for the last three years, Jack receives a simple text telling him where he can find his missing wife. There’s a body at each location, but none of them are Leah.

Jack hates missing person’s cases, but they’re his bread and butter. He only takes the case to find Carl Boyd’s missing wife because the details of her disappearance closely match Leah’s. He hopes by finding Bonnie Boyd, he’ll find his own wife.

Following the leads in the Bonnie Boyd case, Jack discovers that for the last three years, someone has been killing women all over the city, a fact Jack’s ex-partner and still best friend, Ray Navarro, has neglected to tell him. The city has a serial killer and officials haven’t been able to find a single lead on the person they’ve dubbed The Butcher.

Could Bonnie Boyd’s disappearance be linked to The Butcher? More important, was Leah one of The Butcher’s victims? And could he have gone so far as to murder a child?

With every clue Jack weaves together, the more his own life unravels.

Meet ex-homicide detective Jack Slaughter who finds himself embroiled in a terrifying and deeply personal hunt for a gruesome lady killer.

Jack is a well developed character that totally gave me a closeness that made me feel compassion for his story, his sadness, his pain. Jack’s daughter, Zoe and his dog, Trax were killed and his wife is missing. Jack’s life has been in a downhill spiral. He left his home and his job as a well known and loved homicide detective. Lately he has been tormented by a killer who has been sending him text messages that contain the locations of women who have been killed. While dealing with all of this he has taken up doing P.I. work. Carl Boyd was given Jack’s name to help investigate his wife Bonnie’s disappearance. Let me warn you. You are in for a suspenseful treat! The author delivered three suspenseful story lines masterfully.

This is a good opener to the Jack Slaughter Thrillers. I enjoyed the beautiful description of the California scenery. The detailed description of the city and sights gave the story a vivid illustration for me. I love that the author’s description wasn’t so wordy or so detailed as to cause the story to drag. I admired Jack’s resilience and drive. His story was relayed in detail where it seems to have no resolution to his spiral of depression but he steps outside of his own pain to assist in finding a local serial killer and solving the case of missing Bonnie Boyd.

The case of the serial killer is solved. Jealousy, a sick sense of self pleasure drives the killer but with Jack on the case the murders didn’t go unsolved. The case of missing Bonnie Boyd I wasn’t sure who was behind her absence. Does Bonnie’s disappearance have anything to do with the serial killer on the lose? Mr. Boyd is looking pretty guilty to me. Did he have something to do with his wife’s disappearance? The spouse is always the first suspect – right? You will get the answers to all of your questions except for Jack’s personal case. Yes the author leaves us with a cliffhanger on this one but a story such as Jack’s can’t be wrapped up in one book. I am looking forward to reading more about him!

A warning to reader, the book does contain crude language and some of the murder scenes may be unsuitable for some. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading the next book in the series. Highly recommended!

Gripping and fascinating, yet sad. What a book!

I have to admit I’m new to the work of Nic Stone. This is my first book by this author. The style is unique and the story fresh. This book was thought-provoking and eye-opening. The writing flowed well, and though there are a couple of different styles, it worked. I liked when Justyce journaled his letters to Martin. He writes letters to Martin Luther King Jr. in an attempt to make sense of what’s happening to him. I liked reading this from his perspective.

The book touches on affirmative action, profiling, racist jokes, going along with the flow, peer pressure and the determination to be one’s own person.  The book made me think and opened my eyes. I hadn’t known in quite such vivid detail what people like Justyce go through on a daily basis.  There are themes in the book that might be hard to read, but it’s worth the read. At just over 200 pages, it’s short enough to be a quick read, but long enough to make an impact. Grab a copy today.

Wife. Mother. Breadwinner. Penelope Ruiz-Kar is doing it all—and barely keeping it together. Meanwhile, her best friend, Jenny Sweet, appears to be sailing through life. As close as the two women are, Jenny’s passionate marriage, pristine house, and ultra-polite child stand in stark contrast to Penelope’s underemployed husband, Sanjay, their unruly brood, and the daily grind she calls a career.

Then a shocking tragedy reveals that Jenny’s life is far from perfect. Reeling, Penelope vows to stop keeping the peace and finally deal with the issues in her relationship. So she and Sanjay agree to a radical proposal: both will write a list of changes they want each other to make—then commit to complete and total honesty.

What seems like a smart idea quickly spirals out of control, revealing new rifts and even deeper secrets. As Penelope stares down the possible implosion of her marriage, she must ask herself: When it comes to love, is honesty really the best policy?

I am not sure how many times I found myself teary eyed while reading this book. I’m sure many mothers will relate to Pen’s story. The mother carrying the weight while their spouse seem to have an easy role in the relationship.  With wonderful writing, a flowing, meaningful plot and characters that have such a personality I am sure many wives will also relate.

As an avid reader I come across many books. Some are okay and some I wonder how did they even got published. But this book is a treasure! This is one of those that you don’t find often, that many readers seek. This book offered the thrill of being taken through so many emotions that I can’t help but classify this as a “must read.”

How much do we really know a person? This is the question that Penelope Ruiz-Kar asked herself when she finds out her friend Jenny Sweet’s perfect life has been a facade.

After receiving this new revelation about Jenny, Pen starts to question her life and her marriage and she finds the courage to face her life’s truths instead of keeping the peace.

Pen reminds me so much of myself. Lost in a marriage, a working mother carrying a full load of life. Even though the stress level would increase for Pen it only made her humorous side show. I loved Pen and Sanjay’s love for one another. Both were open and welcomed the chance to open up, try things a new way and work on making their relationship better. Sometimes I think we get comfortable in the roles society creates that we don’t tweak the roles to fit our personal situations. Why does the man have to work and bring home the bulk of the income? Why does the mother have to tend to the children and keep up the house? Everyone’s marriage doesn’t fit this mold. Pen and Sanjay had the courage to reevaluate their relationship roles and execute changes that worked for them.

Penelope is a kind and lovable woman. She has two young children but she made sure to include Jenny’s daughter Cecily. I enjoy seeing the transformation of Penelope. At work she settled but she had coworkers around her that cared about her and knew she had what it takes to move up in the company. She has so much to gain and now her confidence level has a boost. I like how the relationship between Penelope and Matt turned out and Penelope had the courage to continue to speak the truth and not just what Matt wanted to hear. Though Penelope and her dad didn’t have the best relationship Penelope knew she must face the obstacles that has kept her and her dad apart.

This is a life-affirming, funny and delightful read that I highly recommend to readers who enjoy a well-written, satisfying story of humor but also one that deals with real life issues.

Filled with action, conspiracy, romance, and questions of whom—and what—to believe, The Line Between is a high-octane story of survival and love in a world on the brink of madness.

This is an incredible read, full of external and internal conflict. The author does a great job of putting the reader in Wynter’s head, seeing what she is feeling and seeing. I would recommend this to anyone.

A harrowing debut novel of a tragic disappearance and one sister’s journey through the trauma that has shaped her life.

For eleven-year-old Esme, ballet is everything—until her four-year-old sister, Lily, vanishes without a trace and nothing is certain anymore. People Esme has known her whole life suddenly become suspects, each new one hitting closer to home than the last.

Unable to cope, Esme escapes the nightmare that is her new reality when she receives an invitation to join an elite ballet academy in San Francisco. Desperate to leave behind her chaotic, broken family and the mystery surrounding Lily’s disappearance, Esme accepts.

Eight years later, Esme is up for her big break: her first principal role in Paris. But a call from her older sister shatters the protective world she has built for herself, forcing her to revisit the tragedy she’s run from for so long. Will her family finally have the answers they’ve been waiting for? And can Esme confront the pain that shaped her childhood, or will the darkness follow her into the spotlight?

What do you do when your world is turned upside down? Esme is only eleven when her sister, Lily, disappears one night, changing everything she once thought she knew about herself, her family, and the world around her. How will she manage to move forward, follow her dreams, and be all that she knows she can be when they can’t even find Lily?

Esme is a fascinating character and I immediately liked her. Honest, childlike, but more mature than you’d expect, she grabbed my attention and held it. She’s so torn between being free to live her own life and feeling guilty for not having paid more attention to her sister the night she disappeared. It’s heartbreaking to read at times because you can tell she truly had a bond with Lily. Although I have no doubt that her siblings, Nick and Madeline, cared about Lily, it’s also obvious that they didn’t have the same relationship with her that Esme did.

I loved being able to journey with Esme through the horror of her sister disappearing to her adult life as a dancer. She really grows and becomes her own person and I think a lot of that is because she was able to get away from her family who, in so many ways, stagnates and can’t get past Lily’s disappearance. Even though Madeline and Nick manage to move on, they don’t seem to have found the kind of freedom that Esme does with her dance.

A Lily in the Light is more than the story about a missing girl. It’s about faith, hope, and learning how to cope when you feel like you can’t even begin to understand what’s happened. I was totally swept up in this emotional novel, rooting not only for Lily to be found, but for Esme to find herself and a way to help heal her broken family.

Classic gothic horror stories from the literary mistresses of the past!

Many of gothic horror’s spookiest tales have come from the pens of women. Yet a substantial number of these women were overshadowed by their male contemporaries, especially with regard to the classics. “Ladies of Gothic Horror (A Collection of Classic Stories)” redresses this imbalance by bringing together a selection of gothic stories from the past written exclusively by women. Carefully edited and compiled by author and anthologist Mitzi Szereto, “Ladies of Gothic Horror” offers readers plenty of good old-fashioned chills and thrills. Whether you’re a devotee of the genre, a literature lover, an academic or a student, this volume of short fiction is sure to please. The biographies accompanying each story will show that these women were anything but typical for their time. Includes seventeen stories from authors Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Gaskell, Edith Wharton, Marjorie Bowen, Gertrude Atherton, Virginia Woolf, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Elia W. Peattie and many more.

“The Lost Ghost” talked about a sad spirit whose life had ended far too early. One of the most interesting parts about it was how much empathy I developed for that ghost. While I can’t go into details about their backstory, I found myself thinking that I would have behaved quite similarly if I’d been in their shoes. This definitely wasn’t the reaction I was expecting to have to a haunted house, but it did make for some unforgettable reading.

The protagonist in “The Mortal Immortal” was someone who had lived a few hundred years so far without aging a single day. I can’t say much else about him without giving away spoilers, but I was fascinated by how he stumbled onto the secret of living forever without aging or dying. His descriptions of the many decades he’d seen over the course of his long life made me yearn for more. The final scene was perfectly satisfactory, but it also made me wish for a sequel. That’s a sign of great writing if you ask me!

As soon as I noticed the title for “The Room of the Evil Thought,” I couldn’t wait to find out more about how a room that had once been used as a minister’s study could have ever developed such a dark and terrible reputation. The author’s decision to give her audience so much freedom to come up with our own theories about how and why this room became filled with evil was a smart one. I truly enjoyed devising my own theories about what was going on there before testing them against the clues the narrator provided.

As much as I loved the stories themselves, the thing that convinced me to give this collection a five-star rating were the short biographies of each author at the end of their piece. I didn’t know anything about some of them, so it was quite helpful to get a quick overview of their lives after I read their work.

Ladies of Gothic Horror (A Collection of Classic Stories) is a must-read for anyone who loves the horror, mystery, science fiction, or paranormal genres.

WANTED: Men and women willing to drive through the valley of the shadow of death.

The world’s population has been decimated by the Change, a chain reaction of events triggered by global warming. In Europe, governments have fallen, cities have crumbled and the wheels of production have ground to a halt. The Alps region, containing most of the continent’s remaining fresh water, has become a closed state with heavily fortified borders. Survivors cling on by trading through the Runners, truck drivers who deliver cargo and take a percentage. Amid the ruins of central Germany, two Runners, Cassady and Ghazi, are called on to deliver medical supplies to a research base deep in the Italian desert, where scientists claim to be building a machine that could reverse the effects of the Change. Joining the pair is a ragtag collection of drivers, all of whom have something to prove. Standing in their way are starving nomads, crumbling cities, hostile weather and a rogue state hell-bent on the convoy’s destruction. And there’s another problem: Cassady is close to losing his nerve.

The only thing that is keeping small towns all over Germany alive are the Runners. The Runners are men and women who have specialized vehicles that allow them to navigate the harsh world.

I liked this concept. It’s a new take on how the world can be changed by the hands of mankind. The personality of each character is well developed. The characters learn to rely upon each other. It did take time for this to happen, Runners are known to be aloof. Their emotions were palpable to me.

There is a wonderful correlation between how the driver’s health suffers and and how the land they pass becomes worse. Each driver also undergoes a personality changes which shows how each person is either gaining knowledge or taking a beating.

The plot stays strong with no major changes. I enjoyed seeing how mankind is still struggling to keep themselves alive and how far they will go. The world is well described and makes me glad that I was not there.

Each driver also knows that this run could be their last, yet they decide to go anyway. They want the world to be healed so future generations can live a better life. So, each one offers different sacrifices to make sure that at least one truck makes it.

If you love people showing how strong they can be when adversity strikes, if you also enjoy watching a stricken world, and a different take on what happens when mankind harms the planet, then this might be the book for you.

It isn’t always easy to survive on an alien planet.

The pacing was well done. This tale was labelled Action/Adventure for a good reason. There was often something going on in the plot that made me wonder how in the world the main character and his son, Drum, were going to survive their most recent brush with death. They rarely knew a moment of safety, and that made it impossible for me to stop reading.

I had a lot of trouble keeping track of the large cast of characters. There were so many of them and they were introduced in such big groups that I spent a lot of time trying to remember who was who. There simply wasn’t enough space for this reader to get to know them all as individuals, and that was a disappointment.

Some of the most interesting passages were the ones that explained how Drum came to be. Cyborgs obviously don’t enter this world like human babies do, so I was curious to discover why and how he was created. The answers the plot provided were quite satisfactory to me.

There were multiple punctuation errors in this book. While I was able to figure out what most of them were intending to say fairly quickly, it was distracting to keep finding them over and over again. Another round of editing could have cleared them up pretty quickly, and it would have made it easier for me to justify choosing a higher rating.

It was mind-blowing to think of a point set so far in the future that many humans have to trace their lineage for quite a while before they find an ancestor who was born on Earth. This one clue about when this story was supposed to take place was all I needed to begin imagining how different the lives of these characters would be from anything current humans have known.

If you like adventurous science fiction, Old Man Odyssey might be right up your alley!
