Dylan Roth is back home, and not by his choosing. After a nasty divorce, he wants to find his footing and his place in the world. He joins his dad and brother in the family construction business and is assigned to the renovation of the old Mercier house, which is being filmed for the TV show Dream Homes, Unlimited. The last thing Dylan wants is to fall for Scarlett “Letty” Mercier, but an undeniable attraction is making it hard for him to say no to the redheaded beauty. When he learns the Roths’ and the Merciers’ pasts are entwined, he starts digging, and family history can no longer stay buried. Dylan and Letty are bound by a haunting secret that threatens to tear them apart unless they can break the ties of the past.

The past will not be ignored.

When Scarlett hires the Roth construction company to renovate the old Mercier house, Dylan is confused by her prickly attitude. Later he learns the Roth and Mercier families have complicated pasts. After reading a brief account of the source of animosity between the families, I knew there had to be more to the story. The explanation seemed flimsy to me, and I couldn’t believe an entire town had accepted such a weak explanation. However, my curiosity was piqued, and I had to know the whole story. As work on the house begins, both families seem willing to put the past aside. Unfortunately, construction on the house has disturbed something sinister. Will Dylan and Scarlett solve the mystery before history repeats itself?

Dylan and Scarlet have an almost immediate physical attraction to each other. Their first meeting is definitely prickly, but they warm to each other quickly. I must admit their relationship gets serious a bit too fast for my taste. Even Dylan and Scarlett admit they care about each other more than they should at such an early stage in their relationship and aren’t sure why. Is it simply fate, the connection to the past, or something else? Whatever the reason, Dylan and Scarlett have good chemistry and are a good couple.

What really kept me turning pages was the mystery of the past! I desperately wanted to know the true story of Dylan Roth (Dylan’s ancestor with the same name) and Jules and Marianne Mercier. I loved how Ms. Sweeney gradually revealed bits and pieces of the unnerving tale through old journal entries. The paranormal happenings at the Mercier house were spooky and gave me chills as I read!

I truly enjoyed reading Bound by Love. I recommend this romance to anyone who enjoys a good suspense with a dash of paranormal.

This anthology envisions winters of the future, with stories of scientists working together to protect narwhals from an oil spill, to bring snow back to the mountains of Maine, to preserve ecosystems—even if they have to be under glass domes. They’re stories of regular people rising to extraordinary circumstances to survive extreme winter weather, to fix a threat to their community’s energy source, to save a living city from a deep-rooted sickness. Some take place after an environmental catastrophe, with luxury resorts and military bases and mafia strongholds transformed into sustainable communes; others rethink the way we could organize cities, using skybridges and seascrapers and constructed islands to adapt to the changes of the Anthropocene. Even when the nights are long, the future is bright in these seventeen diverse tales.

Athena and the other characters in “A Shawl for Janice” left their EcoTower to do a bird count in nearby forests and meadows that had sprung up from the ruins of small towns after the Change. Ms. Almazan did a wonderful job with her world building here. I truly felt like I’d been transported to the future, especially once Athena’s reasons for volunteering for this bird count were revealed. There was so much character development in those plots twists that I wished I could remain with Athena to see what she did with her life next.

While I enjoyed every story in this anthology, there were a few of them that I thought would have benefited from including more details about the worlds they were set in. “Snow Globe” was one example of this. It followed Okwi Bearheart, a park ranger who was struggling to connect with the citizens of Windigo. When a violent conflict threatened the safety of some of people who lived in that community, she had to act fast to try to help them. There was a lot going on in this plot, but the narrator didn’t give me enough details about any of it to draw me into what was happening. It would have been nice to get to know the characters better so I could have been more concerned about their fates.

“Recovering the Lost Art of Cuddling” followed Katie on a last-minute run she did to repair a neighbor’s composter before a dangerous blizzard hit their community. When the storm amped up and her journey didn’t go as anticipated, she had to figure out how to get herself and her sled dogs to safety before they froze to death. I was eager to learn if these characters would be okay. They were so endearing and well written that I couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to any of them. Their adventures were exciting from beginning to end.

I’d especially recommend Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Winters to anyone who wonders what the future might hold for humanity.

Laurel Rowan is happy to be home in Alberta and excited that Coll Hazel is coming from Cornwall for a visit. She’s looking forward to showing around him the ranch. The visit doesn’t turn out as she imagined when the plight of a band of wild horses comes to her attention. Laurel is angry and frustrated that her childhood friend Chance, the boy on the neighboring ranch, and his father are determined to round up the wildies and send them to the meat packers. Laurel, Coll, and Chance’s sister, Carly, embark on a mission to rescue the horses and find a protected place where they can live wild and free.

This story starts off with a rescue mission, and the action and excitement never let up! Laurel’s friend Coll is visiting from Cornwall, but her plans to show him around the ranch are thrown in disarray, as a local herd of wild horses are in danger of being rounded up and sold for meat! Like many other horse focused series, this feels a bit like the type of plot expected in The Heartland Series, or for younger watchers The Saddle Club.

I really enjoyed this style, and read this one quickly, which was made easier as this story plays out like a show, and the detail and characters were both realistic and vivid enough that I read most of this in one sitting! The story does deal with some more mature issues teens face, other than the ‘meat packers’ there’s also issues of physical and alcohol abuse and some teen/YA type sexual awakening dealt with in the story. It’s nothing not mentioned in other books or shows, but still isn’t a completely ‘clean’ read either.

As mentioned above, I really liked the writing style used, and look forward to reading more like this from Ms. Bell’s work! While this is YA, adults can enjoy this too, and this actually is one of those stories that doesn’t really feel ‘too young’ if you enjoy The Heartland Series type TV show, then this has a similar feel!

Telepathic petsitter Jordan Vaughn wishes she could forget her checkered past. Despite her genuine efforts to make amends, she falls short every time. When she meets the guy of her dreams, she’s sure that her bad-luck streak is over.

A head injury erased Harry Hill’s memory. Now, four years later, he’s built a new life in Nocturne Falls, complete with a gorgeous girlfriend.

Everything is falling into place—until someone tries to kill him. But will the past he can’t remember jeopardize his future with Jordan?

We get to meet a young man who wakes up in the forest with no memories and was beaten and bruised. The only things that provide any idea to his identity is a cat and a soaking piece of paper. He can’t make out what it says but a few letters, so he decides to call himself Harry. He follows the cat to a road and catches a ride to a small town called Nocturne Falls.

Jordan Vaughn lives in Nocturne Falls with her twin sister Mallory and her sister’s fiancée Cyrus and trying to make ends meet. She owns her own pet sitting business that is struggling and wants to get out of her sister’s place as she feels like a burden. Luckily, she gets a last-minute cat sitting job that allows her to stay at the Tucker household.

What she doesn’t know is that her life is going to become much more interesting and difficult.

She meets Harry in an unexpected way as he catches her from falling as she tries to enter the house using the trellis to get up the second floor since the key was missing. He takes it upon himself to be her protector since he had already had to save her.

The characters are well developed and I enjoyed the quirks in Jordon’s personality. You can’t help but feel sorry for her as she tries her best to help her sister but something always goes wrong. For example, Jordan was trying to make breakfast for her sister and fiancé’s 1-year anniversary but ended up burning the bacon, causing a fire in the oven and partially ruining the kitchen. To try to apologize for that she had bought a flower arrangement but her sister was allergic to it.

The plot was fun and different. Nocturne Falls is a well created and unique town. I’ve not read many books where there is a place for all the supernatural and unique beings to live without being censured. The best part is that the normal humans think it’s just an odd town that is obsessed with Halloween. Jordan fits in well as she has a gift to talk to animals telepathically.

The characters are well developed with each one having their own issues to work through but they help each other. Harry is able to allow Jordan to finally slide out of her older sister’s shadow and become her own self. She forces him to embrace who he could become. He draws upon her strength to finally decide that it was time to figure out who he really is.

The mystery really takes off when Jordan talks to Harry’s cat, Kitty. She finds out important information about the abduction. Watching their interactions as they piece clues together to figure out Harry’s past is a delight. I enjoyed how Harry reacts to finding about her gift. Their journey takes them in an unexpected direction, Catspaw Florida.

Watching them piece together small pieces to find the larger ones made the mystery a lot of fun. What I thought could be changed is how fast the mystery was actually solved. There was a lot of buildup but then the culprits were caught and the rest of their lives are pieced together quickly.

I would love to read more books in this universe and plan on rereading this novel. I adore animals and getting to hear what they have to say was fun. Both characters grew into themselves and, through their relationship, the reader learns that after persevering through the struggles of life, the end is more than worth it.

Inspiring story of a girl whose disability is her greatest strength and brings the important message of never losing hope in hard situations and using misfortune to look for an opportunity to be kind.

The story takes you into the Andean Mountains of Peru to a remote village where you meet a young girl, named Matica, who worries about being shunned by the tribal people because of her growth disability that makes her different from everyone else.

And then the adventures begin, changing her life in marvellous way. Matica is delightful, caring, and undaunted by these giant birds and their offspring, she and her father rescue from poachers.

A young child with a disability, finds her place in a South American village.

Matica — is a 9 year-old stuck in a toddler’s body, unable to grow. The people in the Peruvian village where her Australian missionary father lived with the natives, tease Matica cruelly for her differences. That’s part of what I struggled with. Matica’s character, even because her disability, was…odd, and the villagers’ mistreatment, would have easily been a reason for her father to leave, or find her a safe home where she could grow up and learn better behavior. I felt that the author also tried to be logical, but ended up losing that threat soon on and parts of the story lacked the focus and quality of others.

As mentioned, there was good, I did like that the author tried to highlight disabilities in a positive light, or rather more accepting one as Matica’s disability has little effect on her personality and quick mind. In fact, she might possibly have been the only character I liked throughout the story. I also enjoyed the condor/wildlife part, and seeing Matica again showing her strengths, despite her unfortunate growth defect, proving that her size does not define her.

The good and bad are about even in this one, but Matica’s enjoyable nature bumps my rating up a bit, and makes it easier to praise this story. I’d enjoy more of her story, but wish the book was a smoother read, and that it had more focus on plot, avoiding the choppy transitions. Still, this story is an interesting middle-grade read, that can be enjoyed by all ages, and has some good messages of hope and finding your place and purpose in life that are universal.

Though addressed to her daughters, Ali Wong’s letters are absurdly funny, surprisingly moving, and enlightening (and gross) for all.

I laughed, snorted and had a great time while reading this book.

I love the humor of Ali Wong. It’s unapologetic and bluntly honest. She pulls no punches. This book is no different. If anyone thought she hadn’t written it, read the first chapter and it’s evident she was fully in charge.

She’s blunt and talks about the things in her life that affected her—her father’s passing, meeting her future husband, her time abroad, learning to be okay with being different and children. She definitely made me look at having children in a different way. I’ve never thought about saying some of the things she does in this book but that’s okay. It’s her book. It’s also a long letter (in chapter form) to her children. I liked how she told it how she saw it. I also loved the epilogue from her husband. It’s sweet, honest and touching. I should add, she talks about butts a lot. I mean, a lot! If you’re not interested in her affinity for butts, then you might want to turn away. If it doesn’t bother you, then no worries. Read away!

If you’re looking for a book that’s funny, heart-wrenching and will stick with you after the final page, then this might be the book for you.

When a Dom invites a shy bookstore owner to live out his fantasies, more than one life will be transformed.

Words are Heath Snow’s life. He can’t remember a time when he didn’t have his nose buried in a book. He couldn’t make a living as a writer, so he did the next best thing—he bought a bookstore. But when he’s not selling books, he’s living vicariously through the characters he encounters. Real men can’t hold a candle to the hot men in his favorite genre.

Any environmental brand viagra without prescription factors or past experiences influence one’s perspective of any given situation. The Pride display in the bookstore window may be what captured Xavier James’s attention, but the man enthusing about books interests him more. The BDSM book lying next to the cash register is a pleasant surprise, and when he draws attention to it, Heath’s flushed cheeks and bright eyes pique Xavier’s curiosity even further.

Xavier is about to learn that some things are more important than work, and Heath is about to step out of his comfort zone, into a place where fantasy and real life coexist.

Heath has always adored his books and words, but when writing turns out to not be for him it’s a natural progression for him to own his own small book store. He loves nothing more than talking books and making recommendations to his customers and finds happiness here. Xavier is more than a little intrigued not just by the handsome owner, but by the well-read BDSM book Heath next to the register. Can these two men find themselves on the same page?

I found this to be a wonderfully paced full length novel. I really enjoyed how the author had the time and space to slowly introduce me as the reader to both Xavier and Heath’s characters, letting me get a good feel for both what they were like and where they were in their lives. This helped me really see not only how they could work together as a couple, but believe in their relationship and understand how they fitted together and meshed so well. Readers who enjoy a slower pace and fuller experience of the characters should find this story really suits their tastes.

The authors’ voice was modern but really relatable, I found myself easily slipping into the story and I related particularly well to Heath, finding a number of common points with his love of books, reading and the simple enjoyment of sliding into a good book and losing sense of time and real life struggles. I really loved how realistic and smooth the story felt to me – and how this made Heath and Xavier’s compatibility so much more believable and lovely to my mind.

I also really enjoyed the intimacy and sex between Heath and Xavier. While smoking hot, there was so clearly emotion and strong feelings between the two men it wasn’t just sex and kink for the sake of it. I really came to believe both men adored each other and relished exploring their sexuality together – particularly when it came to the club Xavier was a member of and the realities and fantasies of BDSM. I enjoyed the good balance I feel the author struck between Heath’s expectations and desires from reading fiction and how it meshed and coupled with the realities and possibilities of a true, living BDSM relationship. I feel the author did a great job with this, keeping it sexy and interesting but still realistic and logical. In particular, the depth of feeling and deeply emotional connection between Heath and Xavier really sold the story for me. Add on an interesting and well-written plot that didn’t seem to just be a quick throw-in and the story overall felt really well rounded and balanced to me.

Full of interesting characters, a deeply emotional relationship and a good, solid plotline this full length story ticked all the right boxes for me and I really enjoyed it. Recommended.

Neither questions’ answer will bring happiness for the hero or heroine. Running helps you find only a part of yourself. Settling is not being true to yourself, nor does it lead you to complete happiness. Yet, Mal and Sera have to find their way if they truly want to be happy. This novel is about all the mistakes the hero has made, and he’s made some doozies. Sera’s initial mistake was loving him so quickly and completely, it led to some actions that were misconstrued. This story is about their coming back together.

The heroine steps onto the stage with dramatic flair, requesting something important to her and she gets the ball rolling. The hero has actually never forgotten her so he’s quite taken aback by her appearance, her request, and his feelings. I am so glad this is told through third person point of view. I felt the book is well served by seeing things from both sides.

I enjoyed the chance to see how each felt and I liked watching them fall in love again. It was like pulling teeth getting them to admit the full truth. The author did a wonderful job of keeping my interest. I liked meeting Caleb and Ms. MacLean used his character to perfection. True, it was a tad formulaic, but I didn’t care. He was so fascinating, I am pretty sure he deserves his own happy ever after some day.

I adored the final chapter and the epilogue because they made me feel absolutely happy and satisfied and glad I read The Day of the Duchess. This is a wonderful read for a lazy afternoon and is an easy recommend.

When Valentina Tereshkova blasted off aboard Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963, she became the first woman to rocket into space. It would be 19 years before another woman got a chance—cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982—followed by American astronaut Sally Ride a year later. By breaking the stratospheric ceiling, these women forged a path for many female astronauts, cosmonauts, and mission specialists to follow.

Women in Space profiles 23 pioneers, including Eileen Collins, the first woman to command the space shuttle; Peggy Whitson, who logged more than a year in orbit aboard the International Space Station; and Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space; as well as astronauts from Japan, Canada, Italy, South Korea, France, and more. Readers will also learn about the Mercury 13, American women selected by NASA in the late 1950s to train for spaceflight. Though they matched and sometimes surpassed their male counterparts in performance, they were ultimately denied the opportunity to head out to the launching pad. Their story, and the stories of the pilots, physicists, and doctors who followed them, demonstrate the vital role women have played in the quest for scientific understanding.

Everything I thought I knew about the space program went out the window when I read this book.

This is a YA book, but it’s easily enjoyable by readers of all ages. The writing flows well and hooked me right away. I learned a lot about the women who’ve been to space. Not just that the US sent women, but the first women in Russia and across the globe. Sure, there is a large portion on US astronauts, but it’s balanced by plenty of stories about other female astronauts.

Each chapter is easily understood and well-written. I liked how the author made the women interesting and understandable. It’s not just a story where there is information and it’s presented blandly. Instead, it’s told in a bouncy way that drew me in.

I’m glad I read this book. I’ve wanted to know more about female astronauts and the space program, so this was a perfect piece to add to that puzzle. If you’re interested in the full story of space, this is one book you won’t want to miss.

Remember that line from “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”? “There’ll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago.” Telling ghost stories during the Yuletide season was a popular tradition during Victorian times, and David Allen Voyles revives the tradition with his collection of twelve original, frightening ghost tales and one novella, all set in the Christmas season. You’ll find a wide array of supernatural entities within The Thirteenth Day of Christmas and Other Tales of Yuletide Horror, from traditional ghosts to modern twists on familiar Christmas characters like Santa and Krampus. You’ll travel to a modern hotel in the Arctic Circle that’s made entirely of ice, as well as to a nineteenth century village in Bulgaria whose citizens have a unique yearly ritual with an enigmatic toymaker. There are ghostly mysteries to be solved, wicked children to be punished, haunted graveyards, possessed dolls, and even a humorous account of Santa’s visit to a haunted house on Christmas Eve. So turn down the lights, grab a cup of eggnog, and light the Yule log as you prepare to read these Christmas ghost stories. Just remember as you read them, you can cry and you can pout, but one thing is for sure–you better watch out!

“The Toymaker” was the tale mentioned in the blurb about a nineteenth century Bulgarian village whose citizens have a unique ritual every winter with a travelling toymaker. Getting to know so many of the families who loved in this village made their world come alive to me. I had a good time seeing what their daily lives were like and what they hoped their yearly visitor might do for them. There were exactly enough hints about his identity to make it clear. I also liked the horror twist Mr. Voyles included in the plot. It was just as festive as it was scary.

There were a few stories in this collection that I thought would have benefitted from more development. “O, Christmas Tree” was one of them. It followed the Livingston family between the time they bought an artificial tree at a yard sale and Christmas Day. The tree they brought home was expensive, so the fact that they got it at such a bargain price seemed too good to be true. I was fascinated by this find and wanted to know more about where the tree came from and why it was sold for so little money. While there were some answers to be found later on, I had so many unanswered questions by the end of it about what happened to them and why their tree was such a strange object.

Merle and Gladys had enjoyed their brother’s annual Christmas visit for years when “A Promise Kept” began. When a heavy snowstorm started on Christmas Eve, they worried he wouldn’t be able to make it home this time and were relieved to see him once again after he did show up. I liked reading about the cozy holiday these siblings shared and was quite curious to find out what the science fiction, fantasy, or horror twist might be for such a wholesome get-together.

I’d wholeheartedly recommend The Thirteenth Day of Christmas and Other Tales of Yuletide Horror to anyone who is intrigued by the darker side of the holiday season.
