The web of intrigue extends far beyond Callie’s suspicions and its connection to her personal story pierces her to the core.

A twisted mystery that will leave you scratching your head.

Callie and her brothers are settling their father’s estate and wants to find who is truly responsible for her aunt’s death. However, Callie’s presence stirs up a whole lot of emotions and memories from the townspeople, some good, some not so good. But with every step, she learns more about the town and its people.

I loved how descriptive this book was because even though it took some time for me to get into the story, it just felt realistic. This is the author’s first book and it was so good. The mystery and suspense along with a bit of romance meshed so well for me. Ms. Mathews kept the mystery there right up until the end–even with the twists and turns. The characterizations were good and realistic. They had a depth to them that I rarely see and get to read. This story had not just a mystery but showed the closeness of family and friends, as well as not so good or close friends.

I found that the romance was sweet and not the main focus. Even though the romance and chemistry was slow to start, by the time I read half the book, I was rooting for them. I can see their relationship develop from strangers to becoming the most important people for each other.

The climax was a climax to remember. Great for readers who want a mystery as well as that family and friends feel.

Lady Grace Wyatt is content as a wallflower, focusing on scientific pursuits rather than the complications of society matches. But when a handsome, celebrated naturalist returns from abroad, Grace wishes, for once, to be noticed. Her solution: to “build” the perfect man, who will court her publicly and help her catch his eye. Grace’s colleague, anthropologist Sebastian Holloway, is just the blank slate she requires.

To further his own research on English society, Sebastian agrees to let Grace transform him from a bespectacled, bookish academic into a dashing—albeit fake—rake. Between secret lessons on how to be a rogue and exaggerated public flirtations, Grace’s feelings for Sebastian grow from friendship into undeniable, inconvenient, real attraction. If only she hadn’t asked him to help her marry someone else…

Sebastian is in love with brilliant, beautiful Grace, but their bargain is complete, and she desires another. Yet when he’s faced with losing her forever, Sebastian will do whatever it takes to tell her the truth, even if it means risking his own future—and his heart.

There’s only one thing a self-sufficient and book smart lady of the ton can do when she simply must marry a fellow naturalist but he only sees her as a colleague. She sets out to make him notice her by way of a fake romance. Nobody is better suited for a fake romance than your best guy friend, right?

This was one of those books that, when finished, was honestly satisfying. The character development was there. I truly liked both Grace and Sebastian as well as the side characters introduced throughout the story. Especially the Duke of Rotherby. He’s an interesting player in this game Grace and Sebastian play out before all of London society. I was tickled to note that his story will come out next year and I’ll be sure to watch for it. Some lovely miss is going to tie him in knots and it will fun to watch.

Also, I realized I need to go back and look at some of Ms. Leigh’s prior books to see if some of the other happily married couples I met had their happily ever afters already told. That’s how I often find some of my new future favorite story tellers. By reading their series completely out of order.

I particularly liked this story because, while the premise wasn’t new (I’ve ready plenty of the ‘fake romance to win the hero’ tropes in historical romance) the personalities and family dynamics of these characters stood out to me. Grace is allowed to venture into what most people of the time period would have considered “a man’s world”. She’s smart and interested in learning all she can in the field of zoology. Sebastian is also a man of science but he’s more in the habit of studying people and cultures. I think the author made that distinction an important part of this book. Sebastian sees Grace in way others don’t. It was a sweet courtship to watch even when they didn’t realize it was a courtship.

There’s some pretty funny scenes involving some scandalous dirty words and dancing in the rain. Historical romance lovers will enjoy the dialogue as well the story itself. Well developed and an unexpected yet delightful ending.

It’s going to take more than luck to make his Christmas dreams come true

Jim “Lucky” Elliott is the country boy next door – charismatic, handsome and charming. But when he has to drop out of vet school to try and rescue his grandparents’ Marietta-based sleigh ride business and family farm, Lucky faces his hardest struggle yet.

Podcaster Rachel O’Rourke is done with broken hearts, but she can still find joy in other people’s happily-ever-afters. When she holds a contest on her show for the best first kiss story, her bruised heart beats a little faster when she reads Lucky’s submission. He doesn’t have a story, but his grandparents do, and free advertising for the winner is just what he’s looking for.

But when a real estate developer sets his sights on the Elliott land, Lucky will have to decide if the money means security for his family, or if he’ll fight for Sleigh Bell with Rachel by his side.

Reading this book was like overdosing on sugar. It was heavenly in the beginning, impossible to stop and then melancholy when it was over. I wish I had read it in moderation so that it was properly savored. Unfortunately time wasn’t my ally. I was determined to read this book before Christmas. In fact, I tried to start it three times and was derailed. Today is Christmas Eve and I finally sat down from all the hustle and bustle and gave myself some well-deserved “me time”.

Many of my friends and I enjoy watching Christmas romance movies on the Hallmark channel. Christmas at Sleigh Bell Farm would make a wonderful addition to Hallmark’s movie list. I’m excited that this was the first book in the The Elliotts of Montana Book Series. I am definitely interested in reading book two. It’s impossible to not fall in love with the Elliotts. They are a loving family that I’d like to get to know more.

To be honest, I am thinking that I will enjoy the second book more because I’m hoping that it will be about one of Jim “Lucky” Elliott’s older brothers. Christmas at Sleigh Bell Farm was Lucky’s story. While he made a heartwarming hero in this story, he was the youngest and still struggling with the transition into manhood. I prefer my men to be already established. I understand the entire plot evolved around his transitioning from following his dreams vs. seeking his father’s approval. The plot was contemporary, sweet and enjoyable. I just prefer a hero that is secure and stable, and can stand on his own two feet, confident in his decisions. As the synopsis stated, Lucky really is “the country boy next door-charismatic, handsome and charming”.

The heroine, Rachel, was actually the stronger of the two leading characters. She wasn’t afraid to take a risk in order to make her dreams come true. She encouraged Lucky and gave him strength to follow his heart. It’s not often the hero is the vulnerable one so it did make for an interesting read. Rachel and Lucky’s dynamics worked thanks to the writing style. I’ve never read a Kaylie Newell book before but I am willing to read another story by her. I’m just hoping the next one will have a slightly more confident hero.

The narrative itself might not win any originality awards, and while there wasn’t much conflict or surprise plot twists, I was perfectly fine with the sequence of events. It was relaxing to read a smooth, comforting feel-good story. With all the hustle and bustle going on in my house, it was the perfect read to escape the stress of the holiday.

I love reading romance stories set in the winter during the holiday season.  I definitely give it a thumbs up.

Grant Peters is sixteen and wants nothing more than to just compete in calf roping at rodeos and keep winning gold. But there are two obstacles in his path.

The first is Logan Summers, also sixteen, and also into calf roping. Logan is Grant’s only real competition and every time Logan wins, he gives Grant a smug little smirk that sets Grant’s blood boiling. Deep inside, though, Grant knows that his hostility toward Logan is about more than that smirk; it’s about feelings he’s not ready to acknowledge.

The second is Grant’s parents being close to selling the family ranch and moving to the city, away from rodeo, and away from his horse, Thunder.

Of course, as soon as he sets off into the woods, he runs into Logan, who is undertaking the same hunt to save his own family’s ranch.

Now, these two teenage rodeo nemeses have to overcome their hatred for each other and their uncertainty about themselves if they have any hope of coming together to save their families’ businesses.

Not every adventure announces itself ahead of time.

Grant was a well developed main character. He was kind and intelligent. Even better than that, one of his biggest flaws had to do with how he handled emergencies. He preferred to fix things himself instead of asking for help even in situations that really could have used extra people working on them. Seeing how this flaw impacted the course of his story only made me like him more. There was something very relatable about someone who struggled with something that was hard to overcome and that had a serious impact on his life. Grant felt real to me, and I always get excited when I meet characters who fit that criteria.

As much as I liked Logan, I found it confusing to have two narrators. His persona was so similar to Grant’s that I had trouble telling them apart. The fact that some scenes switched between them without clearly letting the audience know that was happening only added to my confusion. He would have made an equally good sole protagonist, but I think this story would have worked better if only one of them had explained what was happening in it.

The romance unfolded nice and slowly in this tale. I always appreciate slow-burning relationships, especially for characters like these that had a lot of other stuff on their plates when the audience first met them. It made perfect sense for them to focus on more pressing matters before spending much time thinking about their love lives.

I’d recommend Thunder to anyone who loves horses or nature.

A man conflicted by past deeds. A woman with no family of her own. Is it possible for love to unravel an ancient past, in order to claim two badly scarred hearts? Or will the light of hope be doused forever?

Readers who enjoy romance blended with a the combination of history and the mystical will be utterly enchanted by this clever ‘weaving’ of a tale. In To Weave a Highland Tapestry Mary Morgan offers us a wander through the past thanks to a bit of time-travel; which works in her quite contemporary main character surprisingly well.

Gwen, whose sense of history is apparent in her study and use of ancient weaving techniques, was attracted the the task of stitching the tapestry at the MacFhearguis’ castle. An act of kindness gives us a bit of insight into just who she is and, as the story goes forward, we cannot help but admire her curiosity, her strength and her determination. This one main character brings together many ‘threads’ of story, fom the curse knotted by the slighted Fae, so long ago, the struggles of clan MacFhearguis and, the one we are waiting for, Patrick. But how can a romance evolve from almost different worlds, at utterly different times?

From the outset, we readers wait for the moment that we do see coming; when Gwen must go back…but then, we are swept along into and unpredictable story that is more than romance. There was that ancient wrong–the Fae were indeed slighted–but can the two change what has been written into the lineage? Can they, together, weave a different future for what should be a magnificent castle, sitting now on utterly barren lands? Their challenges and their quest move this story right along.

More, the backdrop and sense of place is wonderful. Readers will feel as if they have traveled the highlands. This is however, very much a time travel paranormal story and I would only recommend it to readers who are already firmly fans of the genre.  Looking forward to the next by Mary Morgan. Do read!

Everyone knows the question about which came first, and it’s usually about chickens and eggs. However, in this instance, which came first – the Greek Sirens or the Welsh Morgen? I’ve finished this book and I still don’t know the answer. What I do know is how incredibly well-written it is, being full of Welsh mythology, legends, lore, and magic.

There is a haunting quality to this story, from beginning to end, with a touch of mystery. The romance side is full of problems and setbacks, being the ultimate slow-burner. There are a couple of love scenes that go into some detail, but nothing too detailed.

This is a long book with plenty of detailed descriptions. An excellent cast of characters helps to build this story up to it’s perfectly paced climax. Although this is the first book in the series, I feel it is a complete standalone. I would love to continue the series just to see where it takes me next.

I have enjoyed every single scene in this book and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it.

Charm’s left wondering if even Agatha Christie could have seen this one coming.

But with so much working against them—including the whole town being dead set against them consummating their relationship—do Charm and Ace stand a chance?

Charm, a witch, and a triplet, is back, in her cozy little town and faced with a murder again. A movie is being filmed here, and her sister is staring in it. Familiar characters from book one are here, but if readers hadn’t seen that book, it’s okay. This second in a series is a standalone.

Charm is a good name for the protagonist, as it suits her well. Her love interest is a strong character who adds conflict in his own way. The supporting characters are drawn well enough to add to the plot, and there are plenty of twists and turns to make this an engaging story.

It’s not a high-tension tale, but the little details keep a reader immersed in this world. As we learn more about the crime, we also discover more about Charm. These details add depth to her.

Another antagonist—not the murderer—adds another touch of tension and interest to the story. What will happen with this one, who happens to want what Charm has? The secondary plot is not really connected to the primary plot, but it paints details and adds to the understanding of characters.

This is a cute little story and a great continuation of Charm’s escapades. Readers of cozy mysteries who like unconventional characters could really enjoy this one. If there is a third in this series, I would definitely like to read it.

So what if Orla and Floss’s methods are a little shady—and sometimes people get hurt? Their legions of followers can’t be wrong.

Thirty-five years later, in a closed California village where government-appointed celebrities live every moment of the day on camera, a woman named Marlow discovers a shattering secret about her past. Despite her massive popularity—twelve million loyal followers—Marlow dreams of fleeing the corporate sponsors who would do anything to keep her on-screen. One wants fame more than anything else, one already has more fame than she can handle, and a third who wants nothing but to be left alone. However, their lives are forever entangled in a way none of them expected. As social media grows, explodes, and reinvents itself, all three are intent on achieving what they most want. But will they discover how or will they forever be a slave to their followers?

Floss, Orla, and Marlow are nothing alike. Floss is an attention seeker of the highest order. Orla, while wanting fame – as a writer, not an internet sensation – doesn’t necessarily want to be in the spotlight either. Marlow, on the other hand, has all the fame a person could want and more. The path that brings Floss and Orla together is pretty ordinary, but that’s where the usual stops and the crazy begins.

Orla was my favorite of the three women. Although she has a toxic crush on her high school pal, Danny, she mostly does what she can to survive. Once Floss enters her life, she finds a way to help her friend gain the notoriety she craves, even if it nearly leads to their destruction. I could relate to Orla in the way that she constantly gave things up for Floss, even when she didn’t want to or felt like Floss wasn’t deserving. In a lot of ways, most of Orla’s relationships were a bit toxic.

Floss annoyed me in so many ways. She was abrasive, unrepentant, and walked over anyone who stood in the way of her gaining followers – Twitter, Instagram, whatever. Her downfall was caused by a careless mistake, one that had dire consequences, but even then, she strove to rebuild her brand and become famous again. She mellowed out a bit by the end, but I never really warmed up to her.

Marlow was probably the most interesting of the three, however. Her role plays out in the near future, thirty-five years after Floss and Orla’s role, but it isn’t as crazy a future as you might think. As a well-loved reality star, Marlow’s situation was unlike any other I’ve read about. I thought that she was a bit spoiled and whiny at first, but as her story unfolded, I really began to empathize with her.

For me, the most interesting part of the book was the idea of The Spill – an incident that occurred online that caused a complete upheaval of the world as Floss, Orla, and everyone of their generation knew it. The Spill made way for a new and more intrusive form of internet, one that was government controlled. As far-fetched as this might have sounded ten years ago, today, it is frighteningly possible. Although Marlow’s timeline is set in 2051, it seems like it could be 2021 in so many ways.

Followers is one of the most interesting and in-your-face books I’ve read all year. The author realistically portrays influencer culture and its effect on the internet and the real world. Even Marlow’s futuristic life isn’t all that unimaginable in today’s world. It’s partly a social commentary and partly a warning, wrapped snugly in a wonderfully written and addictive narrative.

Luna has had horrible luck with men. Even when she meets a man who should be good for her, it just doesn’t feel right. Then Colin, a man she’s only glimpsed in her dreams, stumbles into her life claiming to be from the past. Luna is skeptical at first, but Cat’s Paw Cover is a magical place and anything is possible. Luna is determined to help Colin, but the more time she spends with him, the less she wants him to leave. I truly felt sorry for the couple. They have good chemistry and clearly have feelings for each other, but Colin is a true gentleman and is determined to return to the past to honor his obligations. As I read, I wondered if Luna’s relationship with Colin was another ill-fated romance or something more?

Colin adjusts to life in the present a bit too quickly in my opinion. Not only does he have to deal with the trauma of the shipwreck, but also the shock of jumping several hundred years into the future. However, I was able to set aside my doubts and put his acceptance of modern living down to the fact that he has an inventor’s soul. Watching him learn about modern conveniences was a lot of fun!

The passages describing the storm on the ship were excellent. “The force of the wind and the rain made it hard to breathe… Lightning ripped apart the clouds overhead. Barrels, broken free from their ropes, rolled across the planks covered by streaming water.” When I finished reading the stormy sections, it was like coming up for air!

A Witch in Time is as sweet and fluffy as the confections Luna bakes in her café. It is a fun, fast paced romance perfect for enjoying on a relaxing afternoon.
