Magic doesn’t exist. I used to believe, but it was the wistful imagining of a child.

When the Duke of Denforth makes me his duchess, he shows me wonders beyond any fantasy. Instead of one husband, I’m blessed with three – the duke, and my guardians, Moses and Liam. Our scandalous passion cannot be denied as magic heats between us.

When I’m taken from my husbands, I must learn to embrace the power inside me. It terrifies me, but too much is at stake to give in to my fear.

The pacing of this story was smooth, speeding up where necessary and still giving you time to process what you had read.

The ending of this book takes you to modern times, which was a pleasant surprise. I loved the ending and how it opens the next book. Still, I don’t know if I’ve quite finished with Lily, ‘Michael’, Moses, and Liam. This book is definitely one to keep, re-read, and enjoy all over again. Definitely recommended by me.

Something Happened Here, But We’re Not Quite Sure What It Was by Paul McAuley is a complex sf story about politics and xenophobia when human colonists on an Earth-like planet are faced with the possibility of reaching out to alien cultures, especially when a big organization that has previously done harm is in charge of the operation.

More importantly, are they willing and able to talk to humans?

The world building was phenomenal. There was so much attention paid to describing the history of this community and the corporation that founded it that I couldn’t stop reading. I can’t give too many specific examples of the things Mr. McAuley included in the descriptions without sharing some pretty huge spoilers, but the things he said about what that land looked like before humans started living on it were particularly interesting.

I only have one minor criticism, and it has to do with the character development. There simply wasn’t enough attention paid to showing the audience who the characters were as individuals and how they were evolving as I would have preferred to see. The characters were surrounded by so many incredible things that I was surprised by how little they were affected by them or changed as a result of them.

One of the other things I loved about this story was its accurate depictions of small-town politics. Not all of the characters in this community liked each other, and it showed in both small and big ways as they discussed the possibility of the Omega Point Foundation being allowed to install radio communications equipment just outside of town that would give them the possibility of communicating with alien species. Since this foundation had been involved with some pretty shady deals when humans first began living on this new planet, not all of the townsfolk were comfortable with them having another chance to potentially hurt innocent people. I was fascinated by both sides of the argument and looked forward to seeing which one might win.

If you love futuristic science fiction, I’d highly recommend checking out Something Happened Here, But We’re Not Quite Sure What It Was.

Against the background of Sheridan’s Burning of the Shenandoah Valley, Jack and Evie fight to save their friends and themselves – or is history carved in stone?

Lavender House has a message for Evie.

The whispers coming from Evie’s closet have tormented her all Summer, and Evie’s had enough. At the moment Evie finds the courage to confront the presence calling to her, the house whisks her back in time. Before Evie realizes what has happened, she comes face to face with Jack. Evie immediately feels a spark of attraction, but Evie and Jack have a much deeper connection then either of them could imagine.

Like many couples Ms. Trissel has created, Evie and Jack clearly belong together. I think instant love connections are difficult to pull off, but Evie and Jack’s love is anchored in the past and seems completely plausible. However, I would have liked to see them spend more time together. The past is a tumultuous time. There is much to be done in preparing the for Sheridan’s arrival, and Evie and Jack’s moments together are precious and few. I would have liked to see them spend a bit more time together in order to get a better sense of the kind of couple they will be.

Ms. Trissel brings the horrors of war to life in this tale. She shows how the Civil War affected soldiers and civilians alike. Families were torn apart, homes were burned, and lives were destroyed. Jack is caught in the middle of it all struggling to do what is right. He doesn’t believe in the Southern cause, but he cares about the South and can’t bring himself to fight against it. Consequently, he is in danger from both Union and Confederate soldiers. However, Jack is not one to sit by idle. He works as a guide for the Underground Railroad. It is a very difficult position to be in, and I admire his strength of character.

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read Secret Lady. Ms. Trissel never disappoints! I highly recommend Secret Lady to anyone looking for a sweet historical romance.

Can the three of them deal with another mafia mad man hell bent on destroying their lives and still find their way to a future together? Or will they lose their chance at redemption?

I love paranormal romances for that insta-bond you usually get. The thing I love about this book is you don’t get that! Kieran is attracted to Josie, more than he can even say. He won’t do anything about it though, as he knows she isn’t his mate, and he doesn’t think it is fair. Liam knows she isn’t his mate, but is determined to make her his as soon as he possibly can. Put the three of these together, and it is lightning bolts all the way!

This is the second book in the series, and I would like to read book one. I think it would help with a lot of groundwork to fully understand what was going on. Saying that, it isn’t difficult to grasp, but I do like having all the details. The characters are incredibly well-written, and not just the main triad, but all of them. The pacing is fast yet smooth, and the ending gives this story a very satisfactory ending, whilst still leaving you wanting more.

This story is another jewel in the crown of Maia Dylan, and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

She is Baba Yaga, a crone who ruthlessly uses the needy and greedy for her own devices. And in this anthology of new stories starring Baba Yaga, she lands in some spectacular scenarios.

A Jewish resistance fighter in World War II Poland must gain the help of Baba Yaga to vanquish three supernatural men and avenge the loss of her comrades. A young mother leaves her family to serve the witch in penance for committing a terrible wrong. One story delves into Baba Yaga’s tragic origins, while another re-examines the classic tale of Vasilisa, following the young girl who comes to Baba Yaga for fire on her own journey from maiden to mother to crone. One tale transports the witch from the forests of Russia to the swamplands of the American South, expertly weaving together Slavic and African-American folklore, and another brings her right into the modern day, as a young boy goes looking for a witch to put a spell on a school bully and gets more than he bargained for.

Not every witch is necessarily evil.

There was danger lurking everywhere for Vasilisa in “Vasilisa the Wise.” Not only did her stepmother not care if she lived or died, Baba Yaga actively tried to come up with tasks this character couldn’t accomplish so the old witch would have an excuse to eat her. I found Baba Yaga’s challenges and threats deliciously frightening. Since I knew almost nothing about this classic fairy tale villain, it was nice to start this anthology off with what I assume was a more traditional telling of who she was and how she liked to behave.

All of the stories in this collection were creative and worth the read. With that being said, I would have liked to see a little more attention paid to the character development in “Boy Meets Witch.” As intrigued as I was to see how Baba Yaga would respond to a young boy seeking her out for advice instead of all of the girls who had been written about in this anthology, I didn’t feel like I got to know Alex Rusnak, the protagonist, as well as I did the protagonists in the other stories. If he’d been equally well-developed, I would have given this collection a five-star rating!

“Baba Yaga: Her Story” was a wonderful take on Baba Yaga’s life before she became such a famous literary figure. When the audience met her in the first scene, she was an abandoned child who didn’t even have a name yet. I was as surprised by that as I was by all of the things that happened to her as she grew older and began to realize just how powerful her magic abilities were. While she definitely was a villain, I still grew to like her as I got to know her better and understood why she occasionally did such harmful things to ordinary people.

Skull and Pestle: New Tales of Baba Yaga should be read by anyone who loves fairy tales.

I’m a sucker for an opposites attract story. Susan Carlisle is a go-to author for me. The writing is always sparkling and keeps me right in my seat until the last page. This book was no different.

Paxton and Lauren are great characters. Fully-fleshed and fun, they show the magic of the holiday throughout the story. I loved the doctor in the country storyline. Susan Carlisle writes the plotline, which could be trite, in a fresh perspective.

Paxton is out of his element. He’s in a small town, with no traffic lights, is snowed in and has to help care for a child. I liked how he dealt with each hurdle. He was very real to me. Then there’s Lauren. She’s no-nonsense. She knows what she wants and isn’t always ready to grab it (him) because she’s got to concentrate on her son. I liked how they were both realistic. I fell for both characters and wanted to see them not only have a great Christmas, but a happy ending, too.

If you’re looking for a sweet read that’s sure to heat up the holidays or the chilly winter nights, then this might be the one you’re looking for. Recommended.

The afterlife isn’t always a peaceful place.

At first I wasn’t sure if this tale was meant to be set in the past or the present. Eventually, I did make up my mind about this question, but I liked the fact that the storyline focused on all of the timeless elements of being a twelve-year-old whose family has just moved into a haunted house. Fury could have just as easily lived several decades ago and it wouldn’t have changed much about her adventures at all. There’s definitely something to be said for characters and plots that aren’t tied down to one specific era. This could be a modern-day classic in the making!

I would have liked to see a little more attention paid to character development. Fury went through some pretty memorable and spooky experiences, so I was surprised by how quickly she adapted to the idea that ghosts exists and that there was one living in her house. If a bit more attention had been paid to how she made that mental leap, I would have given this book a five star rating. Everything else about it was well done.

The plot related to who the ghost was and how she died was handled nicely. While I obviously can’t go into a lot of detail about it without giving away spoilers, I liked the fact that Fury had barely any information at all about this character in the beginning. Her lack of knowledge only made me more curious to find out who the spirit had been in life and why they’d hung around for so long.

Anyone who enjoys paranormal fiction should give Fury’s Ghost a try.

Debbie Macomber is at her best in this beautiful holiday story about the far journeys we travel to find a place to call home.

A second chance at love? Yes, please.

This was my second Debbie Macomber book and I have to admit, the pups on the cover snagged my attention. I was looking for a sweet holiday read…with dogs. I wasn’t let down.

I knew going into this book, it was going to be a feel-good read. That’s what I wanted. Yes, there are complications. Yes, there’s drama. But it’s manageable. It’s the kind of book that is an easy read, quick one at that, and worth the investment of time.

Josie and Palmer aren’t perfect characters–which is good. I don’t want perfect. I have to admit, Palmer was a tad on the lovelorn side. He wanted Josie so much. I rooted for him, but at times, he was a bit over the top in his desire. It’s a sweet read, but he could be…he reminded me of a pup at times. Josie isn’t perfect as I said. She’s dying to get back to her job in Seattle. I got it. She had something she loved back home. But she loves Palmer. I liked the missed connections in the story, but I did want the action to pick up.

That said, the ending was satisfying for me. I knew what I’d be getting and wasn’t let down. It’s a sweet morsel of a book. It fit the mood and the desire I had for a holiday read.

If you’re looking for a holiday read that’s a quick one, then this might be the book you’re looking for.

A ‘you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours’ situation soon arises, and the story takes off.

I don’t know if this is part of a series or not, but I did feel at times that it was a second or third book, simply due to the world-building. There is great depth to parts of it, but not so much in others. There is such a lot going on in this world, and we learn about most of it.

The story is written very well, flowing along smoothly. The pacing is on-point, with ebbs and flows as per the story. The characters are all nicely described, although everyone will have their own ‘favourite’.

If this is the first book in a series, then I would definitely want to carry on the series. If it’s a standalone, then I am happy I’ve read it, although I would have like to delve into this world a bit more.

Still, an amazing story that I have no hesitation in recommending.
