Their chemistry is sheet-melting hot, and Ellie realizes much too late that the man with the badge is as dangerous to her heart… as her ex is to her life.

I personally enjoyed this book. It helped pass the time while I sat in traffic that took three hours to go five miles. If not for this book then I would have gone out of my mind.

I thought it was an entertaining read as I read about how Eleanor, the heroine, goes into hiding in a tiny remote town. I was intrigued when I read the synopsis. I wasn’t disappointed at all as I dove into the story and discovered an engaging plot. I thought it was funny when the hero, Tyson, met Eleanor. It was an immediate love at first sight for all of us. I have a soft spot for a man in uniform.

Eleanor’s secrets brought about a bit of mystery that created a sense of suspense. Tyson knew she was hiding something. The story line was pretty predictable but I enjoyed the descriptive writing style. Something else that I appreciated was the character development. Tyson has two brothers that I’m interested in reading about. Fortunately for me Going Down is book one in the Hold out for a Hero series.

The ending was satisfying, especially since Tyson and Eleanor had their happily ever after. The ending of the book hooked me with a sense of curiosity which made me wonder about the the next installment in the series. Because of it, I am interested in reading book two.

This is a fun romance filled with chemistry that made for a steamy car ride for me. This was my first Shelli Stevens book and it won’t be my last. This is a book I recommend.

In Search of Cleo follows Gina’s desperation and despair when her assistant loses her beloved cat, Cleo. Gina spends two months roaming the back streets of Los Angeles at all hours of the night, searching for Cleo and meeting several quirky and outrageous characters who help or hinder her in different ways, including Ellen DeGeneres, who searches with Gina and recommends her pet psychic, Sonia; Arthur, the newspaper delivery man who gives her advice; and the mysterious fortune-teller, who appears from the shadows to give her a statue of Saint Gertrude, the protector of cats everywhere.

Along the way, she reflects on the various cats that have been a part of her life and shares her travails as a single girl in search of both her cat and some sanity. In Search of Cleo will delight pet lovers and singletons alike as it introduces Cleo to the celebrated pantheon of literary cats that includes Dewey, Homer, and Oscar.

I am a self-avowed cat lady and this book spoke to me.

Okay, that sounded a little odd. Right? A book spoke to me? First, the original title of the book is In Search of Cleo: How I Found My Pussy and Lost My Mind. I have to admit, I picked the book up because she called the cat her pussy. I knew the difference. But the risque title did grab my attention.

I know Gina Gershon from her acting work, but she can tell a story, too. This is a quick read, but it’s heavy. I felt for her. She lost her cat because of a crazy series of events and like most people who have animals, she didn’t give up until she found him. It read sometimes like a Hallmark movie, in that I wanted her to have her ending and she had determination. Other times, it read like a crazy dream – the fortune teller and seance lady was a bit out there.

But it grabbed me. I respect her determination to find Cleo. When you have that one animal that’s yours, that not only belongs to you, but has claimed you, you get it. I got it. I’ve had a couple of those animals and I hope to have more. They pick you, the same way Cleo picked Gina.

If you want a book that’s got a few laughs, a few tears and will show the depth of love one person can have for a cat, then this might be the book for you.

However, after making a frustrated wish in front of the fortune teller, she seethes with sexual desire that calls the Arcanium strongman straight into her bed and pulls her into the circus and under its jinni owner’s thumb.

Neve is unprepared for the onslaught of lust coming at her from every side—from the sex demons that charge the circus with excruciating sexual tension to her exhibit in the haunted funhouse, where hands stroke her sensitized skin for hours on end without relief. What’s worse, the jinni has more insidious plans for her in the secret Funhouse, private esoteric events where Arcanium can go as far as it wants.

But after a lifetime of combating men’s objectification of her, fighting to be seen as a person rather than as something to seduce, her new raging libido and the impulses that accompany it make the effort all the more difficult. Among the free-spirited and tempting cast of Arcanium, Neve struggles to determine what she’s willing to become.

Neve has lived her life free from the effects of sex and want but one simple misplaced wish brings her into the Arcanium circus. Bell has given her a gift or what one would call a curse and Mikhail is the true man that can help her, but Neve is not so ready to give in to her body’s wants and needs. As Neve finds her place in the circus it seems there are others out there like Bell that have taken notice of her. What will become of Neve and will she survive what Bell has given to her?

Neve’s story is another engaging tale in the Arcanium series. This story revolves around a young lady who never felt any want or need for sex and is given just the opposite from Bell, now sex is all Neve can think about and she is never satisfied. We are along for the ride as Neve tries to learn to control her needs. I really liked Neve she is a smart woman that is not afraid to stand up for herself. She takes what has been done to her and deals with it. Mikhail is a good man but has to do what he must to live and he tries hard to give Neve the space that she needs as she comes to terms with what has happened. I enjoyed seeing the other side of Mikhail and beginning to see what kind of man he truly is.

As Neve learns the ins and outs of the circus we also get to see more from the other inhabitants and their relationships. As Neve begins to settle in as much as one can into the circus readers get to see more of what is going on in it. Bell has his reasons for doing things the way he does but he is not sharing, and it is costing him much. We watch as time and time again Bell hurts people without realizing how much pain it costs and soon it may end up costing Bell. Once again it seems that there is another with powers like Bell that has taken an interest in the circus players and I am eager to see where the author will take this plot line in future books. This is only the beginning of Neve’s story and it does contain some explicit scenes, even one containing tentacles. If you are easily offended this is not a story for you but if you are like me and love a great story full of strong characters and on the risqué side this is one you will enjoy. The author has done a great job keeping this series fresh with each new cast member. Funhouse is a great addition to the Arcanium series

Things change quickly for Abby and the rest of the world on a summer night where everyone is celebrating an important holiday. As the queen is leaving the ball, she commands Abby to ride in her carriage back to Marrington Castle. As they are on their way Abby watches in horror as her brother is taken out of his carriage and eaten by a creature called a Swallower. As Abby learns, these are not the only evil creatures released into the world to attack and kill humanity. Their leader and enslaver is Malos, a creature created from all the evil in the world. Malos arises every 1,000 years and a champion is chosen to destroy him and send him back to his island. If this tradition does not take place, evil overtakes humanity and chaos reigns.

Abby reluctantly takes on the responsibility for the quest to retrieve the items needed to summon the champion.  She is also in charge of the queen’s safety. Along the way Abby gathers friends around her. The first is Joshua, her brother’s roommate.

Each of the cultures of the different countries of the realm are extremely well done. The author’s skill in world-building brings me into the environment like I was there. Standing in the pastures of the horses, the cold and snowy beauty of the Mountain and the heat of the desert. Also, each country has a different culture, with their own values and greetings. Abby had been in most of the cultures during her studies, which made the gathering of an army and the objects easier then it could have been.

Abby does manage to shoulder the burdens placed against her will with aplomb most of the times. Her love for queen and country is a driving force for her.

I believe the trope is a bit overdone. There many books where a female character goes on a quest to save lives. If there had been a twist, I would have enjoyed the book more. The characters are well developed even though Abby does seem to go out of character at times. This has the unfortunate ability to bring me out of the story. I can see what the author is doing, trying to show Abby’s development from a child to a strong woman. Joshua is a wonderful character who balances her. He is a steadying influence and the author made a great choice by making him a healer. His personality is suited to it, as he doesn’t panic in emergencies.

The battle between good and evil was too quickly done. With all the lead up I would have thought the battle would have gone on longer. There were only a few pages of the battle and the end somewhat predictable. Although the after battle action was much better.

This was a light novel with periods of suspense and intriguing characters. The scenery is well done and Abby’s growth as a person and her relationship with Joshua is the main focus. I hope to read more about this world.

This book has a well thought out world with characters who fight for what is right. Val appears in a flash of lightning and when he recovers he discovers he’s in a different world. Various dangerous events end up with Val and Galia fleeing for their lives. I like the magic in this world, it’s different from the usual magic spells. Along the way they meet various different wielders of magic and Val learns a lot of new skills.

I enjoyed this book except for one thing. The flow of the book kept being interrupted by the use of the wrong words in many places. For example: “A titanic wolf-like beast stepped to the edge of the roof and lied beside the girl” – lied is the wrong word here. This type of error kept taking me out of the story.

Other than this the story is good and well worth the read.

As someone who dealt with many stubborn headaches when I was growing up, it was so cool to read a story about a character who had the same problem. This isn’t something that’s talked about much in children’s fiction, but I would have loved to read about it when I was a kid. It was nice to see some representation for this health issue, especially since Cleo’s headaches kept coming back and resisted so many of the different cures he tried for them.

This is a minor criticism, but it would have been helpful to have more descriptions in this story. The plot itself was a great deal of fun to read. What it was missing were more detailed descriptions of the characters and setting. I knew what the personalities of the characters were like and what it might feel like to visit the places they saw, but I wasn’t so clear on what they all physically looked like. If not for this, I would have easily gone for a five-star rating as everything else about it was quite well done.

One of my favorite things about this tale was how self-aware it was. There were a few times when certain characters made comments that let the reader know that these individuals knew they were in a fantasy setting and had some idea of what generally happens in those worlds. This is something I always enjoy reading about, so it was a real treat to realize that I’d stumbled across yet another book that managed to both remain true to its genre and poke gentle fun at itself at the same time.

I’d recommend The Magical Meniscus to anyone who enjoys fantasy that includes a slightly modern twist to it.

When a contemporary writer turns her imagination loose inside the images of an iconic artist of the past, the result is storytelling magic at its best. Here are nine tales that bring to vivid life the early decades of the 20th century as witnessed by one of America’s most well-known painters. Thomas Hart Benton sketched fiddlers and farm wives, preachers and soldiers, folks gathering in dance halls and tent meetings. Though his lithographs depict the past, the real-life people he portrayed face issues that are front and center today: corruption, women’s rights, racial inequality.

In these stories we enter the imagined lives of Midwesterners in the late 1930s and early 1940s. A mysterious woman dancing to fiddle music makes one small gesture of kindness that helps heal the rift of racial tensions in her small town. A man leaves his childhood home after a tragic accident and becomes involved with the big-time gamblers who have made Hot Springs, Arkansas, their summer playground. After watching her mother being sent to an insane asylum simply for grieving over a miscarriage, a girl determines to never let any man have any say over her body.

Then as now, Americans have struggled with poverty, illness, and betrayal. These fictions reveal our fellow countrymen and women living with grace and strong leanings toward virtue, despite the troubles that face them.

One story is about a schoolteacher who doesn’t approve of the woman chosen for bible classes. When both their boys go on mission to save the ones flooding, they both have more to worry about.

If you were black, you could be beaten up and killed and no one cared. The poor fiddler knew that but folks liked his playing and usually left him alone…

You feel the anguish of the mother watching her son go off to war. Ms. Stein’s words are concise and earthy. You feel the emotions of the characters.

She makes you feel the fear of a woman who thinks she might lose her husband to another woman. There are several stories about young girl’s and their emotions. You can relate to their fears and anxieties.

The story that was the most poignant was the one where the father lost his hands and his lower arms in a piece of farm equipment. He keeps on with metal hooks but there is a final confrontation at the end of the story. You won’t forget that one easily.

All the stories are down to earth and have the feeling of family history being shared. What you read will stick with you long after you put the book down.

Now, after their parents’ sudden deaths, the MacAllister siblings return to camp to read the will and decide what to do with the prime real estate the camp occupies. Ryan needs to sell. Margaux hasn’t made up her mind. Mary believes in leaving well enough alone. Kate and Liddie—the twins—have opposing views. And Sean Booth, the groundskeeper, just hopes he still has a home when all is said and done.

But it’s more complicated than a simple vote. The will stipulates that until they unravel the mystery of what happened to Amanda, they can’t settle the estate. Any one of them could have done it, and each one is holding a piece of the puzzle. Will they work together to finally discover the truth, or will their secrets finally tear the family apart?

You never quite get past a tragedy that happens in your youth. It’s even harder when it’s of your friends involved in the accident. But how do you get past it when someone you love – a member of your own family – might have caused the incident in the first place? How do you cope with knowing someone you’re so close to has been keeping such a horrible secret?

Told from several points of view, I’ll Never Tell pieces together one summer night from twenty years previous. Bit by bit, the mystery is put together until you know who hurt Amanda Holmes. I love that one of the points of view is Amanda’s, it lends an authenticity and an emotional element to the novel. Her voice was probably my favorite because she was the only one you could truly trust. All the others had something to hide for one reason or another.

Of all the siblings, Ryan is the only one I felt badly for. He was outright accused by his father of harming Amanda, but never to his face. I can’t imagine how much of a gut punch it had to have been to find out in your father’s will that he suspected you of something so awful. Now, Ryan wasn’t a saint, but he had put in extra effort to become a better person after that summer. I think liked Margo the best though since she seemed to have it together more than Mary, Liddie, or Kate. Sean, I don’t know what it was about him, but he gave me the creeps from the very beginning. All in all, they make for an interesting and unique cast of characters. Each holding onto their own secrets, not telling a soul about what they’re harboring. It makes for a very effective suspect pool.

I’ll Never Tell is a rollercoaster ride of lies, deceptions, and secrets hidden for twenty years. The author does an excellent job of distracting you with false clues, making you suspect one person while all along it was someone else. I’ll say this much – I had two suspects high on my list and it wound up being neither in the end. The author is just that good. I’ll Never Tell is one of the most gripping, engrossing novels I’ve read so far this year.

I inadvertently read book two of the series first that tells Milton and Yvonne’s story. Compared to Milton and Yvonne, Joyce and Odell’s story doesn’t seem as exciting. Their lives are pretty much quiet and don’t have as much action. Odell’s upbringing wasn’t as rich as Joyce’s but they still find a fit that works for them as a couple. I like how the author made the characters so diverse in their background even though they are all from the same town. Joyce seems a little naïve to me but for some reason I feel that she too has a secret. Her life can’t be as boring as it is.

I enjoyed reading Joyce and Odell’s story. I like how the author split the story to tell from all viewpoints. In this book the reader gets to see Joyce’s point of view and how she feels about Yvonne and how men react to Yvonne’s beauty. I kind of feel sorry for Joyce because she seems so alone and she still seems like an outcast because she doesn’t have any close friends and she pretends to be someone she’s not. I want something good to happen for Joyce. Yes she has a handsome husband and a wealthy upbringing but her story made me feel like she’s not living a life like those around her.

If I had to pick characters that I liked best, it would be Joyce’s parents Millie and Preston. They are honest and straight-forward with no filter in what they say, even to their own daughter. They don’t worry about hurting her feelings or covering up what they suspect. Even though he started out as a good guy in my eyes, Odell ended up being my least favorite because of his weakness and secrets. By the end of the book he has dug himself so deep I know he’ll either do anything to keep his secret or anything is liable to happen that will cause his world to crash just like the economy during this time period.

This book wasn’t as funny as book two but it showed a more serious side of real life things like miscarriage, infidelity and those dealing with low self esteem.  I enjoyed the book and I can’t wait to read what will happen next in the series.
