Everything has a price . . .

Railway magnate Tom Severin is wealthy and powerful enough to satisfy any desire as soon as it arises. Anything—or anyone—is his for the asking. It should be simple to find the perfect wife—and from his first glimpse of Lady Cassandra Ravenel, he’s determined to have her. But the beautiful and quick-witted Cassandra is equally determined to marry for love—the one thing he can’t give.

Everything except her . . .

Severin is the most compelling and attractive man Cassandra has ever met, even if his heart is frozen. But she has no interest in living in the fast-paced world of a ruthless man who always plays to win.

Unlike Wisconsin ginseng, Asian ginseng is quite strong, which can bring a person to ER. prescription levitra purchase levitra Many women simply assume that low libido problems are caused by chronic alcoholism. When a newfound enemy nearly destroys Cassandra’s reputation, Severin seizes the opportunity he’s been waiting for. As always, he gets what he wants—or does he? There’s one lesson Tom Severin has yet to learn from his new bride:

Never underestimate a Ravenel.

The chase for Cassandra’s hand may be over. But the chase for her heart has only just begun . . .

At first, Tom, the hero, sounds like a stuffed and starched shirt – rigid, set in his ways and overly sure of himself. That is until he utters the most un-starched comment, “I’ll be your oyster.” In a very short amount of time, Ms. Kleypas provided me the measure of the man, so I’m well aware his statement is wholly out of character. That is also my ‘aha’ moment when I realize that the person doing the most growth, who is going to experience the most changes in circumstances and new awareness, is going to be Tom. My first thought after the first chapter? This, is going to be fun.

If you are a reader who likes to judge a book as readable based on the blurb, a word of caution – I do not agree with the ‘chase being over’, nor that about Cassandra’s heart. I saw the reason for the chase present itself in the first chapter, and even after he received her hand in matrimony, it continued but not quite as the blurb leads you to believe. I perceive it’s not the heroine’s heart but the hero’s. Tom has a dearth of feelings, but Cassandra has an overabundance which will prove to be the hero’s undoing. The results are eminently readable, enjoyable, entertaining and positively delightful. Bazzle’s character is the litmus test – the evidence that the heroine is reaching and thawing Tom’s frozen heart. The twists and turns of their unusual courtship is pure romantic entertainment and very well written.

As for the enemy, again the blurb makes it sound like there’s going to be danger, as in – there might be spies, skullduggery or serious and menacing peril. No one is out to kill anyone, thank goodness. There’s nothing dark or stressful about Chasing Cassandra for which I am grateful. The external conflict puts the heroine in jeopardy; that is true. However, the form it takes is something historical romance readers will appreciate and accept because they understand the gravity of the threat. A nail biting event does exist and it revolves around Bazzle. That scene is where I was truly worried because I’d come to care about his character. How it is resolved gives me great satisfaction, and even while I’m writing this review I am still remembering and appreciating Tom’s actions. He’s a wonderful hero.

Tom eventually seduced Cassandra. Although it was spicy and well written, it also makes me grin from ear to ear. Why? Because I think he was seduced right back, and it confused him. It messed with his will-ordered and efficient mind and I liked that effect. It made the hero approachable, likeable and worthy of the heroine. I especially enjoyed the moonlight waltz. There’s something to be said for shoes that don’t fit.

I was entertained by the contract that Tom and Cassandra came up with. I liked how the author used it to benefit her characters while at the same time giving readers a greater insight into the couple. His reference to ‘tablemats with holes’, and what he thought of fringe, made me giggle. It certainly had me liking him all the more.

Chasing Cassandra was a perfectly delightful read. I have been a bit stressed lately and I can honestly say that the world fell away once I got into the story. I was able to forget the seriousness of life and escape to love, happiness, hope, optimism and laughter. I was treated to a well-rounded happy ever after with characters I really liked. I can easily recommend this a great read.

Blake Gerritt kicked music and fame to the curb years ago and now he’s happy with his anonymous life in an ordinary town in the middle of nowhere. He raised his sister after their parents died and the simmering magic in his blood has faded. He’s cool with that—he’s too old for falling in love anyway. Magic can’t fix his past and he doesn’t need it for his future.

Aaron Wade is young, rich, and miserable, even though millions love his songs. He knows he should be happy, especially since his bigoted jerk of a father is finally dead, but he can’t sleep. He can’t deal. A small town in the middle of rural America is just the cure he needs to get back on track with his life, no outside help needed.

This is a story about true love. Blake has magic in his blood and he knows the minute he lays eyes on Aaron that he has found “The One”. Only trouble is, it takes Aaron a while to catch up.

Blake was a musician but has hidden away in a small town when his parents died and he raised his sister. Aaron is a musician who desperately needs a break from it all after his bigoted father dies. On the surface, these two don’t have a lot in common, often seeing the opposite side of whatever they’re discussing.

Erin M. Leaf is a brilliant author and I have simply adored most of her work. This one, though, just didn’t quite hit the mark for me. For one thing, the constant true love comments started to drive me insane, and I’m sure they did Aaron too as he had no idea what was going on either! I felt it was mentioned a few too many times, ramming the thought home instead of allowing it to flower.

On the positive side, the writing, in general, is brilliant, giving you plenty of clear descriptions so you can see what is happening in your head. The characters have their roles to play and even manage to surprise you along the way. I did love the ending and thought it perfect for this story.

A really good story with supernatural hints that I can definitely recommend.

To stay alive, Sloan must stay one step ahead of her enemies—both known and unknown—and a growing conspiracy designed to pull her under.

What started as a routine dive ended with a dead body. For Sloan McPherson, this isn’t such a big deal since she works as a diver for the Lauderdale Shores PD. Recovering bodies and evidence from the water is what she does. But when she discovers she knows the victim, things start to get dicey for her and her entire family. Forced to team up with her family’s arch enemy, she wonders what more can go wrong.

Sloan McPherson is one heck of a woman. Coming from a family of treasure hunters, she’s now going to college and working as a diver for the police department to support herself and her daughter. She walks a thin line while balancing her personal life with her work life, which is hard considering her father and uncle have run afoul of the law more than once. However, she’s a dedicated mother to her daughter, Jackie, even if she does make some dumb choices at times. Thankfully, she has Run – Jackie’s father – to help out and make sure Jackie doesn’t wind up an orphan. Sloan is smart and witty and although our lives are nothing alike, I found it easy to relate to her and her struggles.

I didn’t like George Solar much at first, but a lot of that is due to the fact we’re in Sloan’s point of view and she didn’t like him at all. She wonders, so of course, I did, too, what he’s up to and if he has an ulterior motive. As the story progresses and you get more of his history, his personality starts to shine. In the end, I wound up really liking him a lot. He is good at keeping secrets but seems to only do it out of necessity. It drives me nuts when one half of a team won’t tell the other why they’re doing something. George was as up front with Sloan as he could be and I appreciated that.

The Girl Beneath the Sea is an action-packed mystery that takes you all over Florida in search of answers. From the beginning to the end, I was on the edge of my seat, not wanting to put this book down. I’m excited to see what case George and Sloan handle next as well as where Sloan’s relationship with Run goes in the future. Since the sequel isn’t due out until next year, in the meantime, I’m going to have to check out the author’s other novels.

William Marshall, emergency medical technician with Mountain EMS, dedicates his life to providing patient care in Banff National Park. A seasoned medic, ‘Marsh’ responds to highway wrecks, medical calls, and backcountry disasters with compassion for the injured and a heart for the homeless. Struggling with his past and with a desperately understaffed service, Marsh coaches new-hire Miranda Walker through the learning curve of the job. While answering to an overbearing medical director, and with the local fire department vying to take over Mountain EMS, Marsh and Miranda confront public and private emergencies with professionalism, courage, and humour.
Against the odds, they turn their service and each other’s lives around.

We get to meet William Marshall, “Marsh”, an overworked but incredible medic who works for Canada’s Medical Emergency Service (EMS). One day he is called into his managers office, Pat Lemay, and where Marsh is expecting another lecture about something he did. Pat and Marsh have a volatile relationship as stated, “These sessions were always a menacing blend of sparring for the heck of it , discussion of what Lemay saw discipline issues, and bargaining sessions initiated by Marsh for everything from better uniforms to upgraded equipment to improve safety to better scheduling.”

This time, Lemay had a surprise for Marsh, he was getting a new partner. Miranda Walker, “Miri”. His first impression told him that she would be a good fit.

She is a strong woman, confident in her skills, willing to learn. Each call stretches her skills and she begin to understand that although she has experience, she learns from Marsh about patient care. As their relationship develops, she becomes worried that Marsh has buried himself in work, not actually living. She does her best to get him to start to live again with small hints here and there along with setting him up with a friend of hers.

Marsh has worked as an EMT for 12 years and as seen everything, twice over. He is extremely knowledgeable, observant, and can handle any situation handed to him with a calm demeanor even in the worst situations. For example, there had been a large crash on a busy highway with nine victims. Unfortunately, all of the patients were dead on arrival. He was there for Miri as she tried to come to terms with the horror. He tends to use humor and his addiction to coffee as a way to help himself and his partner. It’s rather funny about his coffee addiction as it runs through the whole novel. He has a great rapport with all the first responders since he has been working so long and knows how to work with them.

With each call, the reader gets to see how hard it can be for EMT’s and how underfunded they can be with simple comforts that they do not have. Most of their stuff in the bunkhouse came from the trash. Each call shows us a different part of Miri and Marsh, which also shows us how much we should appreciate them. They also must face horrible issues in their personal lives. For example, Miri has a sister that is dying from leukemia and when she got a call from her mother that her sister didn’t have much longer to live, she was lucky enough that a flight crew that was going to take a patient to Calgary died so they agreed to take her there.

For Marsh it was a homeless man that he had a rapport with as he often responded to calls for various ailments when Reggie gets placed in jail. He even gave Reggie a card that had some money for coffee or food. He seemed to understand Reggie better than most, always willing to listen to him and not get mad when those fake calls come in. The author shows us what is going on in Reggie’s mind and we can tell that he needed psychiatric help more than anything else.

The only thing that I would have liked to see is maybe getting rid of some of the scenes that feature Bryce, a mountaineer that is well known for taking beautiful pictures. There were times when I thought scenes with him slowed things down and some unnecessary details could be removed.

This is a story that everyone should read to understand just how hard EMT’s work and how ill treated they can be. They are under constant pressure from the people upstairs along with dealing with difficult patient’s and horrible situations. Remember that if you ever need to be in a situation where an EMT is needed, please make sure that you tell them how much you appreciate what they are doing.

I easily felt like I knew Suzie, like I was right there, cheering her on! I felt the author’s use of perspective, with the mother oblivious, Suzie a frightened teen, and the other characters falling somewhere in the side-lines, paired with the vast knowledge the author shows of equine behaviors, or horsemanship, this was both an highly entertaining and even educational read.

This story can likely be enjoyed by all ages, though it’s written for the YA group.  It’s both well written and easy to follow, making it easy to read quickly, and much harder to put down!

When Julie’s determined stalker comes to town, she is ready to pull up stakes—despite her desire to stay. Joe realizes he will have to break down her fear as well as the walls around her tender heart. Can he keep her from running again in order to give their love a chance?

Julie had reported her stalker many times to the police, but while they had tried to find out who he was, it had led them nowhere. When the stalker sends her photos of herself taken unaware while she was relaxing inside her apartment Julie has had enough. Desperate to escape she leaves her life behind and runs. Can she escape and ever find a sense of comfort and safety again?

I found this to be an emotional and well written mystery story. Very quickly I became attached to Julie and sympathized with her plight. While a part of me wished she’d continued to report the photos and harassment from her stalker to the police – so they’d have a record of what had happened, if nothing else – I couldn’t fault her for finally cracking and having enough and running away to try and escape and find some peace. The situation felt a little corny to me as I read it, but it was realistic and all-too-understandable so I couldn’t really fault it.

There were a few parts to the story that just didn’t gel and make sense to me, like the afore-mentioned stage where Julie simply stopped reporting events to the police, or how she withdrew the maximum amount of cash from an ATM so she couldn’t be traced, but then checked into the random hotel she picked from a brochure on impulse with her credit card. It seemed odd to about-face on using her credit card after the space of only a few hours and with a huge wad of cash in her purse. These were small niggles though and while they made me pause and wonder I could over-look them and simply enjoy the story for what it was – an atmospheric and character driven suspense/mystery story, Julie’s character was relatable and someone I could easily empathize with. The plot was strong and well-written and overall I really enjoyed the story.

Readers looking for a hard or really intense thriller/stalker type of story probably won’t find this suits there tastes. While I found the plot deep and realistic, the stalker aspect was only one large part of the plot – not an all-consuming drive that saturates the entire story. Personally, I was pleased that the small town Julie finds herself in, and her very slow-blossoming relationship with Joe, a native to the small town, had a good amount of time and space within the story to flourish. This helped take much of the edge off the thriller/stalker aspect to the story for me and helped me relax and really enjoy both the scenery and characters.

With a strong plot, plenty of thrills, action and a lovely slow-paced romance I found that this story really ticks all the boxes of an excellent mystery/suspense. Recommended.

For a different twist on the werewolf trope, you should try this book.

Maggie is a great character: strong, determined, kick butt, smart. She’s everything we should want to be as women. I really liked her in this book and she was, hands down, my favorite character throughout. Aiden took awhile to grow on me. On his own, he seems pretty decent, but when he’s with Maggie, he’s kind of a jerk. It’s understandable, I suppose. He is cursed and doesn’t want to be in a relationship, even if the wolf seems to want exactly that. Still, even though he spends much of the book trying to push her away, at his heart he’s a good man.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the secondary story of the “bad guy” who pops up. He was a little over the top bad and not entirely necessary to the plot. Also, if you’re looking for on the page sex scenes, you’re not getting them here…it happens, just not on the page, and I have to admit I missed that a bit. More than the actual sex, I missed that tension you get from really well written sexual attraction (especially before the consummation).

But before you think I didn’t like the book–stop! I did! First off, it’s incredibly well written, smooth, clean, descriptive. It really flows well and I never hit bumps in the writing that tossed me out of the story. The author made me laugh out loud a few times (especially at the start when Maggie was trapped in her sleeping bag) and Maggie is just such a strong, amazing character, I loved reading her every time she was on the page.

If you’re looking for a little something different for a paranormal romance, you could do worse than select this book. I liked it well enough, and appreciated the author’s skill well enough, that I’m off to read book two!

Addy is one of my favorite characters that I have run across in a while. She has a strong personality that affects those that are around her. She is independent, fiery tempered, athletic, and strong willed. She doesn’t let anything that happens to her keep her from her plans. She refuses to give up, letting her situation wear her down to a shell of whom she was as many have done.

When Addy wakes up, she finds herself in a strange box with a naked man spooning her. True to her personality, she quickly runs away from him, noticing that she was also naked and had a strange metal choker on her. The man, Max, watches in astonishment and bemusement as she looks frantically around to find a way out not believing that there was no way to escape.

Poor Max knows that he must be the one to break the bad news to her of where she was and what was expected of her. He informs her that she was abducted by aliens called Hyboreans and she was now considered a breeder. As he suspected she freaked out and didn’t believe a word he said, thinking he was crazy. She did settle down after a while and Max did his best to seduce her.

Max is another very complex character. He was taken against his will from Earth like Addy, but his situation was different. He and some of his college friends decided to go camping one weakened and he gave into his younger brother’s pleas to come with him, assuring their mom he would take care of him. Things were going okay until he thought he heard some bears heading towards their camp. He threw a rock at one of them to stop it, but it turned out to be a Hyborean. The horror of it was he had no idea what happened to the others until his first survival game. Max was a different person back then, like Addy he was full of fire and the hope that he can get back to earth.

Max’s life and personality changed in one instant in the first survival games he went through as he ended up killing his younger brother, not recognizing him as he had grown up. It just kept getting worse as the poor man was forced to kill one man after another to survive in each consecutive year. He was often starved and beaten for the least transgression. What made his life unbearable was the fact that the Hyboreans can Reawaken those who have died, not allowing him to just rest. He is forced to compete time and time again in the Survival Races which ate away at his humanity.

He calls the Gladiatorial side of him the beast as it has no care of anyone else’s life but his own. We see this side of him during the first Survival Games that Addy was watching. As he became older, he was sold from the most important Hyborean, Xanthrag who owns the best gladiators as he was a big time breeder who also owned the HUBREC (the area where all the humans live in), and half the humans.

Now how to explain the Hyboreans. They are large furry beasts that have superior technology and medical benefits. They do not speak out loud, they are telepathic. They are unable to talk to the humans, but they can understand the tone of voice and body language. They are also able to send soothing thoughts to their humans, and as Duncan told her, each person feels what comforts them. She finds out from Duncan; the man and his daughter Tess live in a cabin who are helping her adjust to her new situation.

This story, although rather convoluted is a way to show how one person with the right spirit and determination can make her own fate. It also shows that a man who feels dead inside can be brought back to life when he finds just the right woman and a son to fight for. Using only their wits and strength to escape when nobody thought they could. It also helps to have friends in the right place and the ability to use every available resource. This is a great book but may take some time to read.
