After years of paying her dues on the force, Beth Sturgis has earned her place as a detective for the Robbery-Homicide division of the Atlanta PD. Now, she’s heading up a major manhunt for a potential serial killer who’s working his way inward from the outskirts of the city. The copycat elements in the first crime scene lead Sturgis to retired FBI agent Jack Kale, who was responsible for apprehending and nearly killing the murderer known as the Scarecrow, the same Scarecrow who appears to be this new killer’s terrible inspiration.

Robert Daniels’s Once Shadows Fall, is a gripping thriller in the bestselling tradition of Silence of the Lambs and is sure to become a crime fiction classic.

A young woman has been looking for the right spot to take some photographs for her class. She’s been having trouble finding “the” spot, but an abandoned farm talks to her. She returns with her camera and is ready to begin taking pictures, she notices the crows are bothering a scarecrow. She tries to run them off but they return. Unfortunately, they are not crows. They are turkey buzzards…

Mr. Daniels writes a tough non-stop mystery novel filled with action, terror, and a couple of psychopaths. He takes a new Homicide detective and dumps a serial killer case on her. Then he throws in a survivor of a horror of the past who still has baggage and has not recovered mentally. Jack is very smart, but he has issues of his own. Helping her on this case will bring all those memories back again and he hasn’t done well at containing them in a box in head yet.

He gets involved because the deaths are similar to the ones committed by a killer he put in prison. The first three look like copycat crimes, then the pattern changes. The new killer has other little quirks. He’s just as deadly, though.

Before the book is done, there are three killers involved, all them insane, and it’s Jack and Beth trying to take them down. It’s hard to do with little evidence and unknown assailants. But if they aren’t quick, they will become the next victims.

The ending is breathtaking and you can’t stop reading. The killer has Beth. Can Jack get there in time? I liked the story, the historical references of previous serial killers, the budding romance between Jack and Beth, and how they confess their secrets to each other. A good relationship begins with a level of trust. That’s why the ending of the story was made me so anxious… recommended.

Desperate to escape an arranged marriage, Angelina Herrera flees from Cuba to Key West to start a new life and build her own business. But when her past catches up with her, she realizes the only way she can avoid the arranged marriage is to marry another … in name only.

Drawn to the fiercely independent beauty Angelina, Cuban revolutionary, Alejandro Estava marries her. Though outwardly he agrees to the platonic relationship because of his secret past, he cannot deny his powerful desire to possess her completely.

But tempestuous forces more powerful than the hurricane descending on their island home unleashes their mutual passion while threatening their yearning for a lifelong bond.

Lies and deceit often come naturally to people, but never to a mynah bird.

Angelina is a Cuban aristocrat who flees Cuba in 1868 to escape an arranged marriage. She is a strong-willed woman who arrives in Key West with a plan to build her own cigar factory on land left to her by an aunt. Little does she know the land is nothing more than a muddy swamp. After disembarking, Angelina’s prized mynah bird escapes, giving rise to her finding Destiny Favor, her first American friend.

What would a story about two beautiful and engaging women be without two stunning men? Meet Alejandro (swoon) and Nathan (swoon again) who add lifeblood to this wonderful story of love and lust in an accurate historical setting rarely seen. The story of a Cuban cigar factory in Key West, with a woman at the helm, was enticing in and of itself, but this book had the added flair of giving the story two main characters in Angelina and Destiny. Rarely, is this double-main-character feat ever successful, in my opinion, other than with the famed Gone Girl, of course, which has no other similarities to this Tempt Fortune story. Ms. Roman, however, has written this story with a masterful hand and has given life to two incredible main characters. Adding to my delight was this writer’s amazing ability to add a Spanish language flair, which was completely natural and absorbing! So many times in a novel, I see writers giving a foreign language phrase … and then explaining it to the reader. Huge pet peeve! If written well enough, a writer shouldn’t need to explain their foreign phrasing. Ms. Roman could teach writers a thing or two on the subject. Excellent!

Hurricanes, fires, elegant balls, sailing ships, auctions, polite society, and not-so-polite society fill the pages of this novel, with each circumstance more engrossing than the last. But was the story absolute perfection? Almost. I have one minor criticism that may only be my personal preference — word choice. This exquisitely classy sounding novel was soiled by the few times the male anatomy was described in a mildly vulgar manner. The elegance of the sensual encounters felt marred by these ill-chosen words. It felt as though the words were dropped into the scenes like plops from the mynah bird. They did not belong.

This is a memorable book, and I can’t wait to see what others this author has available. Could they possibly be as good as this one? Tempt Fortune is my first Hebby Roman novel, but it won’t be my last.

If you enjoy authentic historical romances with incredible characters, especially ones that immerse you in the feel of Cuba’s past and the role Key West played, this is the novel for you!

From the beloved actor known for his roles on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and NCIS comes a quirky crime novel featuring a well-intentioned young actor, a trio of suave crooks, and a series of untimely coincidences.

Readers looking forward to David McCallum’s first Book Release, Once a Crooked Man are counting the days until its January release,  and if they’ve been hoping it will be ‘as advertised’ they surely will not be disappointed.

McCallum (Ducky of NCIS fame, among others) has played the role of some quirky characters in his career and Once a Crooked Man – billed as a quirky mystery – is all that and more.  A quirky main character starts us off. Harry Murphy, aspiring actor, happens to overhear plans for the crime.
However, the efficiency of these pills cost levitra lowest check that has slowly started to quiet the mouths of critics and non-believers.Male enhancement pills are being taken. The sexual act is boosted due to deeprootsmag.org viagra sale stamina it provides to the men. Other ‘quirky’ characters follow, like Carter A. From the get-go, we readers have no idea what’s up with him, but its not good; it should be good given his situation, but its not looking good at all.

And here, its worth noting that more than the characters are quirky. McCallum jumps from one to the next, easily switching characters yet maintaining, even increasing, reader curiosity. Stylistically, its not unheard of, but it was not this reader’s favorite.

We start to run into the bad guys. Sal, Max and Enzo. Max looking to retire…he’s looking for that final score to ‘set up’ retirement. He almost gains reader sympathy, but among these characters so much (unexpected? unneeded?) bad language litters the text, its hard to see these guys as anything but caricatures. It is funny but also distracting; my one quibble with the entire story.

In Once a Crooked Man all the characters are at a turning point, and the opening pages flip from character to character. It could be annoying but its intriguing…in a kind of annoying way. But, we want to know and there it is: Author McCallum has us, we keep reading, keep wanting more.

Brilliant funny and wonderful. Even the dedication is quirky. A risk to read but utterly satisfactory. I have to give this one 5 stars, as I think those looking for a fresh original take on mystery/crime will love it.

Cheers to Dr. Ducky! from Snapdragon: a fan.

Grieving and restless, Gabe escapes his worries in the arms of a beautiful stranger. But his mind-blowing one-night stand is about to come back to haunt him . . .

Mad groomed Everly Parker to be a rising star in the executive world. Now that he’s gone, she’s sure her job will be the next thing she mourns, especially after she ends up accidentally sleeping with her new boss. Everly’s world took a nose dive when her friend and boss died in a plane crash. Now she has a new CEO who may fire her on the spot, cyber-security issues that threaten the company and a one night stand that feels like so much more…and those are the easy problems.

Hold on to your hats fearless readers, this is a bumpy ride with so many twists, turns and layers, I thought I was going to need oxygen at one point.

Both Lexi Blake and Shayla Black are known for writing intricately built worlds where just when a reader thinks they are going to zig, they zag. I couldn’t help but love every single minute of it. I’ve read everything Ms. Blake has ever written and this new series holds true to her writing skills. I got lost in this world of the privileged where life isn’t nearly as cushy and smooth as having money should make it. I loved the whole premise of a group of friends who share a bond forged by a common distaste for the life they’re forced into. They all know their futures are planned out and they have a duty to fulfill. It doesn’t mean they have to like it and it certainly doesn’t mean they have to fall in line quietly. In fact, thanks to the ring leader of this band of high society sons, Maddox Crawford, they’ll draw all kinds of attention before they assume their rightful places. But then Maddox had to go and die. It changed everything.

Gabriel Bond, Gabe to his friends, stands to both win and lose the most with Mad’s death. I like how Gabe is both alpha male and yet it’s clear his feelings for his friends and family run deep. It made him seem reachable and vulnerable and yet I had no doubt he’d get to the bottom of the problems Mad’s death caused. Gabe is also faulty. He has a short temper that tends to make him say things before his brain has time to consider otherwise. It gets him into hot water more than once in this novel. At the same time, when Gabriel wants to be smooth, he’s practically silk. Everly didn’t stand a chance.

Everly is one those heroines that I love pretty much immediately. She’s a geek and truly nice to everyone who isn’t crazy mean. I say that because there is a crazy mean girl in the picture. Seriously, this girl has issues but she isn’t Everly’s main problem, just a side slice of pain in her behind. I had no problem at all in cheering for Gabe and Everly’s HEA. They had so much chemistry. I also love that she isn’t afraid to walk away from Gabe, she doesn’t want to but she’ll stand up for herself even if it means losing him.

Readers who enjoy a hot romance with lots of non-sexual action and suspense outside the bedroom should give this series a read. This is book one in the Perfect Gentlemen series. It gives the overall back story and introduces the men who’ll star in the next books. They’re all so different and I can’t wait to be a part of their stories. This is a must read!

Brent is a jock, Logan a geek, these men are a world apart. But if opposites attract, maybe it’s the differences between them that make it worth the fight.

Brent Kelly is a laid-back tradesman whose only concerns are drinks with friends and which man to bed next. In need of a new accountant to sort out his nightmarish shoebox of tax receipts, he’s referred to Logan Willis.

He doesn’t expect to be intrigued by the science fiction-loving, geeky guy with dark-rimmed glasses and a TARDIS-blue shirt. So his fascination with the soft-spoken Englishman surprises him, and their mutual attraction is completely unexpected. He most certainly never expects to fall in love.

One a jock and the other a geek, both men know the differences between them are vast and could cause problems. But in this opposites-attract erotic drama, maybe it’s the differences between them that make staying together worth the fight.

A working man meets a geeky accountant, and they fall head over heels for each other. But… are they too different to be together?

In a word, I loved this book. Despite the novella length, all the characters felt fleshed out and three-dimensional, including the side characters. Brent is the first-person protagonist, a blue-collar worker, smart and strong and a bit of a player in the sense that he fucks guys and then moves on. But he’s sweet and amiable. Nonetheless, he has no head for accounts. Enter Logan, an English-born, small and pale accountant who wears glasses ’cause he’s blind as a bat without them and who loves Doctor Who. Though he appears somewhat feminine, or cute to be exact, he knows what he wants, and that’s Brent, despite Logan wondering why a big jock type would be interested in a nerdy little guy.

Of the side characters, Brent’s roommate Tim is great, the typical straight hot guy who takes home two girls at once, but who manages to be an awesome friend (even though his sense of humor is sometimes a bit more direct than is polite). His involvement in the story is important, and he comes off as a nice guy who loves having a good time.

The plot offers no surprises. Two different types of guys meet and feel an attraction, get together for some hot loving, and then try to make their relationship work. There are the usual plot twists: A great best bud, a horribly mean bud, a snooty sister, prejudices and misunderstandings leading to a relationship crisis, and then a wonderful happy ending. So, basically nothing new under the sun.

And yet I felt like I was reading romance for the first time, falling in love with two great guys and watching with a happy sigh as they in turn fell in love. The strengths of the story are in the strong characters that you sympathize with and perhaps secretly envy a little, and in the dialogue that’s realistic, witty, and funny. The writing flows with ease and the pace is just right, balanced between delicious dialogue, meeting friends and family, and sweet sensual and sexual scenes.

Overall, I highly recommend this sweet erotic romance to everyone who likes their endings happy without being inundated with too much sugary sweetness, and to those who appreciate realistic characters falling for one another and making things work despite their own insecurities or meddling meanies.

Finola McNamara is recently widowed and finds herself working in a unsavory saloon as a housekeeper. This job is unsettling in her heart so when a job opportunity opens in Louisville, Kentucky she is willing to relocate and step out on faith. Timothy Adams is in need of a housekeeper and caregiver for his sick son. Though Timothy hopes for a older gray haired stout housekeeper he is in total shock when Finola approaches him at the train station. Will this young widow woman be able to handle the job?

Reading this book gave me a good, cheerful feeling. This book is absolutely adorable. I enjoyed the storyline, the writing, the wholesomeness of values and the family bond. This book was a pleasure to read and I am thankful to the author for sharing such a wonderful story.

I so loved the characters and the realness that they portrayed. I can actually picture the scenes at the dinner table taking place. My mouth watered to read the delicious meals that Finola prepared. Finola is a sweetheart that came into Timothy and Liam’s life at exactly the right time. Both Finola and Timothy are broken hearted from the lose of their mate. Their meeting is a chance for both to heal from their broken hearts. It’s admirable to read how Finola brings with her her faith and her devotion to what she believes and holds true. Finola is much more than a housekeeper. She is strong, kind hearted and talented. I enjoyed her strong spirit and whit.

Another character I enjoyed was Liam. At first he came across as spoiled and only thinking of himself, but as the book went on he became mature and often time humorous in things he said. He is wise to be a youngster. I enjoyed so much how he appreciated Finola and what she did for him and his father.

There are quite a few typos that I should mention. One typo even spelled Liam’s name wrong.

The title of the book was fitting with the story. And the explanation for the garden of love is very touching. Who knew a garden could be not only healthy but healing for a family?

The writing at times is so poetic and the word usage shows the author has a real talent for not just telling a story but she knows how to write it with extra flair.

“Spring thundered into Louisville with storms and temperatures that played up and down the thermometer like the squirrels in the trees.”

The author really took the time to compose such poetic words. May be it’s just me, but that description really gave me a visual of how the weather and daily temperatures varied during this particular time in the book.

This is a book that I highly recommend. It’s a feel good story, with characters that will leave a strong impression well after the novel is finished.

Her love interest is Caleb, a FBI agent who once helped to ground Destin until their nasty breakup. Sexy moments between Destin and Caleb, loads of tension, the thrill of the chase and an introduction to how a psychic agency functions all made this a red hot read I wanted to curl up in bed with. The way the author captured the feelings of the victims, the absolute absorption of each experience by the investigator and the emotional scars felt by each character-wow. I want more.

Will Eli and Adam be able to help Samantha?

The character development was absolutely phenomenal. All of the main characters had complex and fascinating backstories that were woven into the plot beautifully. I really loved seeing how they changed as a result of the things that happened to them in this book. Their personal growth not only made a great deal of sense given their personalities and what triggered these changes, it was fascinating to see unfold as well.

Depression isn’t always an easy disease to treat. By far my favorite part of this tale was how honest it was about what it’s like to live with this kind of mental illness. It still treated Samantha with the kindness that she deserved, though. Her struggles were neither sugar coated or sensationalized. They were simply one part of one ordinary person’s life, and I appreciated that.

I was impressed with how intricate the world building was. The narrator gave such a detailed overview of what it’s like to be an angel that I almost felt as though I could sneak into heaven and know exactly what was going on at any point in time. What makes this amazing is that the hierarchy of angels in this afterlife is anything but simple. There was a lot to learn about where Eli and Adam came from, but I picked it all up very quickly.

There were several plot twists that I didn’t see coming ahead of time. It was a lot of fun to be surprised by them, especially since they worked so well with everything that had been shared with the audience before they happened. I don’t typically miss these kinds of surprises in stories, so the fact that Ms. Rabig kept me completely unaware of what was coming was pretty wonderful.

Angels with Clipped Wings was glorious. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Janet Ennis tragically died five years ago in what the police labeled an accidental fire. But Janet’s mother, Nora, believes it to be murder and arson. And she’s hoping ex-cop Michael McLaren can prove it quickly, for she’s losing her memory to dementia. As McLaren pokes through the case details, he becomes emotionally involved with the dead woman. Yet, Janet isn’t the only person who threatens his mental well-being. A series of arsons on his own property hint that he’s upset someone connected with this case.

Motives for Janet’s murder rise like the smoky tendrils of a fire. And, motive aside, the murder scene seems a bit too pat: a drought-stricken landscape eager to lap up flames and a conveniently locked door barring Janet’s escape.

Shadow in the Smoke presents main character Michael McLaren; a quiet, intelligent but reflective soul, who’s personality could be straight out of any 20th century British detective story.

He insists he’s not a private detective–not a licensed one, anyway. However, he’ll admit the odd case has “fallen into his lap.” He’s not the positive, arrogant solver of crime many of his ilk are. He’s not a genius, nor especially tough…’no Philip Marlowe,’ to be sure.

But he’s persistent. He’s sympathetic. And more importantly, he’s thoughtful. As he begins to pursue clues, we too see them and come to understand the import of each.

The challenge is obvious at once; unexplained death. Hiestand presents the victim’s mother sympathetically; she may or may not have a point, but her feelings are real. Readers find themselves touched as much as intrigued. McLarren is touched as well, and spurred on by a lovely, velvety voice from the past.  He’s also deterred by his own past, like his old boss, the detective-Inspector.

A lot happens around the fittingly rainy Village of Darleycote; and there are occasional moments of suspense, but mostly, readers will find themselves puzzling out the mystery and enjoying the characters.

Shadow in the Smoke presents a truly original investigative main character, a wonderful study of human emotion and motivation, and a perfectly satisfying mystery. This reader is excited to find a wonderful addition to the classic British mystery! Five stars and an absolute must read for fans of Agatha Christie, Naio Marsh and the like.
