The year is 878. Uhtred, the dispossessed son of a Northumbrian lord, has helped the Saxons of Wessex defeat the invading Danes. Now, finally free of his allegiance to the victorious, ungrateful King Alfred, he is heading home to rescue his stepsister, a prisoner of Kjartan the Cruel in the formidable Danish stronghold of Dunholm. Uhtred’s best hope is his sword, Serpent-Breath, for his only allies are Hild, a West Saxon nun fleeing her calling, and Guthred, a slave who believes himself king. Rebellion, chaos, fear, and betrayal await them in the north, forcing Uhtred to turn once more, reluctantly, to the liege he formerly served in battle and blood: Alfred the Great.

Uhtred’s path seems clear, but fate has other plans.

In California, online driver education is generally preferred by teenagers and also by learners of other buying generic cialis ages. Before reading Lords of the North, I recommend reading the first two books in the series, The Last Kingdom, and The Pale Horseman, for a couple reasons. First, this book picks up shortly after the events of The Pale Horseman. Second, reading the series in order gives a better understanding of Uhtred’s history, his growth as a character, and his complicated relationships. Mr. Cornwell does provide brief summaries of important previous events, but I feel these are meant to refresh the memory of someone who has already read the first two books. Again, I must warn readers that this book contains graphic violence and mentions rape but does not describe it in detail.

So much happens to Uhtred in this installment! As the story opens, Uhtred is once again irritated with Alfred. Uhtred played a major part in Alfred’s latest victory over the Danes, but received a paltry reward. I can’t help but sympathize with Uhtred. He’s done so much for Alfred, his family, and the kingdom of Wessex but receives practically nothing for his service. So, he leaves Alfred and Wessex behind and goes North intent on killing Kjartan and Sven as revenge for the death of his foster father and to rescue his sister, Thyra, if she still lives. To do that he’ll need to attack Dunholm, which is a formidable fortress.

Uhtred is an excellent warrior, but since he doesn’t have an army or a solid plan, I had no idea how he was going to accomplish this. I eagerly dove in to the book with a smile on my face ready to follow Uhtred on his latest adventure. I must admit I was quite surprised to see what fate had in store for Uhtred. I won’t give away too many details, but I will say that a betrayal derails Uhtred’s plans and tears him from his life as a warrior. In his darkest moment, he finds aid from an unexpected source.

As I’ve said before, Uhtred is one of the most well-rounded characters I’ve had to the pleasure of knowing. Yes, he can be arrogant, selfish, and ruthless in battle, but he’s also brave and quite caring. He refuses to leave friends behind, and he is true to his word. Whether he wants to admit it or not, he has the makings of a great hero.

At this point in the series, the books have a familiar feel to them. However, this doesn’t make the tale boring. Far from it! Uhtred’s adventures are never dull. The familiarity comes from knowing Uhtred and his sense of humor. I find it comforting, like talking to an old friend. I also think this book has a stronger sense of nostalgia about it than the previous books. I can really feel that Uhtred, telling the story as an old man, is really missing his days as a warrior and it makes my heart ache.

I’m completely addicted to this series! I highly recommend this bittersweet tale to fans of historical fiction and adventure. I’ll be picking up the next book very soon!

He has to move to Huntsville, Alabama—a daunting prospect for a gay pescetarian from Los Angeles who’s never been south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Fellow engineer Cody Ewing is an Alabama boy through and through, and Julian’s casual assumptions about the South in general and Southern homophobia in particular makes it dislike at first sight. Then NASA throws them together on a months-long project, and they have to make it work.

Forced to rely on each other, the two men develop a tentative friendship that becomes something more as Cody shows Julian Alabama’s good side. Julian’s insistence on secrecy and Cody’s hot-and-cold act could scuttle their chances before they ever get off the ground, though.

Julian Barlow moved from Los Angeles to Alabama for a job in NASA, which was his dream job. What he isn’t looking forward to is trying to adapt to a new culture, a new town, a new job and new colleagues. When Cody Ewing goes to find Julian and show him around his new job he overhears a phone conversation of him complaining about the people and their different attitude from what he is used to. Cody takes offense to the way Julian talks about his town and his people. Cody takes it upon himself to show Julian around town to show him that homosexuals are very much accepted.

They are well created, three dimensional characters that I became invested in.  A good job, considering this was a short story.

Fun and introspective, this story shows that communication is a large part of keeping misunderstandings from poisoning a relationship. We also learn that first impressions can be wrong and people can be completely different from what you thought. I completely enjoyed this story and recommend it to fans of the genre.

Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was fifteen, the youngest of three. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenaged golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her.

And then she was gone.

Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It’s been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie’s case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a café, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she’s meeting Floyd’s daughters—and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel’s breath away.

Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she’s tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew. Where did Ellie go? Did she really run away from home, as the police have long suspected, or was there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? Who is Floyd, really? And why does his daughter remind Laurel so viscerally of her own missing girl?

And it’s such a lovely pot and she’s worked so hard on it and so much depends on it staying exactly as it is.”

What happens to a family after a child goes missing?

In this story the author reveals the break and unravel of the Mack family. The author slowly reveals the unbalance of one mother as she deals with the aftermath of year after year of the devastating impact from the void of her missing daughter Ellie. Unfortunately, the healing wound will be reopened.

You’ll need a “do not disturb” sign because you’ll want to read this book in one sitting. This is a very entertaining book with a well laid out plot. The writing and pacing is excellent with a unpredictable plot twist.

Laurel Mack is Ellie’s mother. Ellie has been missing for 10 years. Since Ellie’s absence from the family her parents have divorced and the relationship between her mother and her sister Hanna is at odds due to the distance between the two. My favorite character is Laurel because her natural instinct is to protect and shelter her home, children and family. Laurel is caring, and has a love for others which is noted on several occasions through out the book. I wanted good things to happen to Laurel, but I know whatever that is it wouldn’t replace her daughter.

How far would a woman go to have a child? When evil shows up it’s sometimes not easy to recognize it. After being in its presence it will eventually show its ugly head. Ellie saw this glimpse of evil and when she tried to be rid of it, it struck back. Without a doubt a reader could very well predict what happened but shouldn’t reward themselves too soon because the full story isn’t told until the very end.

I enjoyed reading the different perspective’s of the characters. The author masterfully weaved the characters’ voices to give a full complete story. Their various perspectives give the story full dimension. The present and past viewpoints helped me fill in the coordinates with the thoughts and voices of Ellie and Noelle.

Highly recommend to readers who enjoy a brilliant plot twist that includes some dark subject matter.

Here’s the deal: I’m the best center fielder in the major leagues. I’m also the guy who cost his team the championship game and acted very unsportsmanlike. So, when the team hires a social media manager to repair the damage to my reputation, I don’t argue. But then I meet Chloe Conrad, and I suddenly understand what people mean when they say they have an instant connection to someone. Which means I’m in serious trouble. Chloe’s a smart, sexy distraction I can’t afford, but one date can’t hurt, right? Only she turns me down. And just like that, it’s game on.

She’s sworn off love…

Finn Auprince is the hottest player in the major leagues. Look up “It Factor” in the dictionary and there’s his handsome face. He’s also my biggest client and I don’t care how easy it is to talk to him or how fun it is to manage his social media accounts, I will not give in to his charms. Then one drunken night, I tell him about my curse: all my previous boyfriends have found their soul mates while dating me. One more heartbreak, and I’ll never recover. But Finn doesn’t believe in curses—he believes in me. Professionally and personally. He sets out to prove the universe isn’t against me, and that his one true love isn’t waiting around the next corner.

The problem is…can we play the game of love and both come out on top?

I’m going to be honest and tell you that baseball is not one of my favorite sports. However, after reading this story, I have a new appreciation for the sport thanks to the hero, Finn Auprince. I am certain the writing style also helped recruit me into being a baseball fan. The story started with an author’s note for the reader telling us that Finn has two brothers and to “stay tuned for two more books as they each get their happily ever after.” This was my first Robin Bielman book and I guarantee it won’t be my last. The author’s note says, all three Auprince brother’s have stolen her heart and that she hopes that they’d steal mine too. Well, I wish I could say that I’ll be faithful to Finn as my book boyfriend but if his brothers are as equally well written as Finn was then I’m looking at two more book boyfriends in my future. I adored Finn for his humble personality despite being a famous baseball player. I also respected his love for his family.

This book had a little bit everything that kept it flowing smoothly and kept me entertained from beginning to end. The heroine, Chloe Conrad, gets the credit for making this story a heartwarming, unpredictable and fun read. She was my favorite kind of heroine. Smart, witty and independent with a touch of vulnerability.

Together, Finn and Chloe make for an unforgettable romance with a lasting book glow lasting hours after the book ended. I just couldn’t get the smile off my face. I loved the element of competition between them. Without giving any spoilers I can only say that this was a great book! I definitely would read it again and would suggest others to put it on their must read list.

Mr. Overbeck’s Mystery Blood on the Chesapeake offers far more than an intriguing mystery. It’s an amazingly complex, detailed novel that offers well-developed characters, a stunning backdrop, and an unpredictable story line.

Darrell is a very human, flawed main character, who happens to have a sense of the spirit world. And a need to right a wrong. Part of him might regret involvement…as well as involving his girlfriend. He might want to focus on all that is right in the world, as well as the beauty of Maryland’s shoreline. We find ourselves intrigued by the circumstances; and soon realize, though the initial crime was years ago, the danger is still very much present today. The building tension makes this into something of a thriller.

‘Haunting’ is the right word for this mystery, in more ways than one! 5 stars and truly a page turner.

The Pale Horseman is a gripping, monumental adventure that gives breathtaking life to one of the most important epochs in English history—yet another masterwork from New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell.

Uhtred holds the fate of England in his hands.

Before reading this installment in the Saxon Stories, I recommend reading The Last Kingdom, the first book in the series, not only because this tale picks up where The Last Kingdom left off, but also to better understand Uhtred’s history and his complicated relationships. Also, I must warn readers that The Pale Horseman, contains graphic violence as well as rape, though the rape is not described in detail.

It has been an adventure watching Uhtred grow up! He’s married, become a father, survived his first shield wall, and killed the Danish warrior Ubba. Uhtred feels he’s done more than enough to prove himself. However, Alfred doesn’t completely trust Uhtred because of his refusal to become a Christian and his divided loyalties. It is easy to sympathize with Uhtred because he is much more likable than Alfred, but I will admit I can see Alfred’s point of view at times. Alfred is a man mature beyond his years with carefully laid, long-term plans. In contrast, Uhtred is wild and quite immature at times, and while he has some long-term goals, he tends to live in the moment. Uhtred can make or break Alfred’s plans, and that makes Alfred uncomfortable. That being said, I’ve found Uhtred to be a man of his word. If he says he will accomplish something, he will. Uhtred doesn’t understand why that isn’t enough for Alfred. I find the relationship between Uhtred and Alfred fascinating. I can’t help but wonder what these two great men could accomplish if they could find a way to work together. Unfortunately, I fear they are doomed to never see eye to eye.

Denied the credit for the victory at Cynuit, Uhtred is understandably angry. In his frustration, he makes life changing decisions that will bring him joy, sorrow, and again put him at odds with Alfred. Uhtred is still truly torn between the Saxons and the Danes. There are moments where I held my breath because Uhtred’s choices literally had the power to change the future of England.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this chapter in Uhtred’s life, and I can’t wait to see what he will do next! I look forward to picking up the next book in this captivating series.

I absolutely loved this book! First, a small disclaimer: this book is not intended for brand new authors who don’t understand the actual craft of writing. It doesn’t go over basics like passive voice, or “show vs. tell”, and it doesn’t help with grammar, etc. So if you’re brand new, certainly use it, but also grab books on the actual craft of writing.

This book is really about making your romance book richer, deeper, stronger. It’s about creating characters who are more three-dimensional and making your conflict believable. It gives you prompts and ideas and challenges. It gets the writing juices flowing.

Much of the book’s ideas could be used for other genres, but quite a bit is very specific to romance. It’s created in a journal format, with places for you to write your answers in, but I’ll be honest, I’ll be using my copy as a reference book over and over.

Are you a romance author looking to create a truly memorable story loaded with interesting characters and a believable plot with a setting that is so real it’s basically another character in the story? I’d absolutely recommend this book. If you thrive on prompts and writing challenges (like I do!), this could very well be the book that changes all your writing for the better.

But no one wants to shelter so cold and blustery a Wind–not the townspeople, not the country innkeeper, not even the gnarled tree who is worried about frozen roots. Finally, Wind does what any of us do when we are overtired: Wind has a tantrum. And it is only with the help of two small children brave enough to weather the storm that Wind finally finds the perfect place to sleep. Gentle language coupled with intricate photo-illustrations of collage dioramas tell this sweet tale about empathy and friendship. The visuals in this book are striking for their vibrancy, palette, and movement.

Do you want to know where Winter Wind goes in the Spring?

Winter is over. The villagers are ready for Spring, and they want Winter Wind to move on. Wind is tired and ready to rest, but doesn’t know where to go. I was immediately drawn into the story, and I sympathized with Wind as he desperately searched for a place to rest. I could feel Wind’s exhaustion and frustration as he grew wearier by the minute. No one seems to be willing to help until Wind meets two children. Will they find a way to calm Winter Wind or will their village be blanketed by snow and ice indefinitely?

Ms. Marshall certainly created an intense character in Winter Wind! I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him as I read. He’s lonely, misunderstood, and feeling unwelcome. I think most children and adults alike can relate to Wind’s predicament at some point in their lives. Understandably, Wind lashes out, like a child throwing a temper tantrum, and causes problems for the village until two children care enough to talk to Wind rather than push him away. Sure enough, their compassion, and willingness to listen are exactly what Wind needed.

Ms. Marshall really made this story come alive through excellent use of descriptive language. Here are a couple of my favorite quotes that capture Wind’s increasingly volatile mood. “With long, cold fingers, Wind tapped windows of cozy homes.” Then later as things escalate, “Angry, Winter Wind blasted out across the fields, crying like a child, howling like a dog, wailing like a cat.” I must also add that Ms. Doliveux’s paper collage illustrations are exceptional! The illustrations perfectly complement the text, and are so beautiful and striking that I almost expected them to move as I read!

I’m so glad I took the time to read Good Night Wind. It is a sweet tale of kindness, empathy, and friendship. I highly recommend this folktale to readers young and old!

But how long will it be before he recognizes her beneath her disguise and the sparks begin to fly once more?

A Debutante in Disguise was a very interesting and well written historical romance story between a brave heroine, Letty and a commendable hero, Lord Anthony. The story starts with a desirable prologue that swiftly left me wanting to read more. I enjoyed the descriptive scenes and well developed characters.

Letty was a unique lady with dreams and goals that were limited by society. I enjoyed how she took leadership overcoming those obstacles. It was a huge risk she took and I could feel the tension and fear of being discovered. I’m so thankful that we don’t live in that era any longer. If fact, I didn’t think about it but most of my doctors that I see are women. I’m glad they don’t have to go through the charade of dressing up as men to be allowed to practice medicine as a doctor. I appreciate those in the past who made this possible by challenging society’s limits and paving a path for change. Letty was the perfect example of courage as she persisted to follow her dreams.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I appreciate a book that teaches me something new and is still entertaining. My education started with the Author Note in the beginning of the book. I didn’t know about Dr. James Miranda Barry’s life long masquerade. That was a fascinating fact that Eleanor Webster shared. I’m not a big history buff but A Debutante in Disguise was rather fascinating from beginning to end. The pace was a nice steady flow which brought the story to life for me or in this case, took me back into the past.

I felt many emotions throughout this story. I enjoyed a few laughs here and there to lighten up my mood around the hero, Anthony. The synopsis sums it up accurately. Anthony is a “brooding, scarred war hero”. His internal struggles pulled at my heart strings. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for not only him but for all the other war heroes who return with internal or external and often both internal and external ramifications from serving our country. A Debutante in Disguise brought hope to the reader through the heroine, Letty.

Letty and Anthony needed each other in more ways than one. They are the epitome of persistence. Together they can overcome any and all obstacles. There was no doubt that their love was genuine and everlasting.

This was my first Eleanor Webster book and it won’t be my last. Bravo for developing a heartwarming love story filled with compassion and romance.
