She’s lost her mother and her memory. And if she fails to escape… she’ll lose herself.

Meiko Wright wants nothing to do with the mother who abandoned her nine years ago. Spending a year in Tokyo, where her mother lives, won’t change that fact. But when she takes a nasty fall in a Shinto temple, she wakes with no memory of her mother… or anything of her past life. Without any idea who she is, she must rely on the kindness of a local priest who offers to help her as best he can. When the amnesiac Meiko wakes with a strange suspicion that something isn’t right, she vows to escape from a bond she doesn’t truly understand.

After years apart, Meiko’s mother Chieko is determined to make up for lost time. But when her daughter mysteriously disappears, Chieko promises she won’t lose her again. Along the trail of clues, the detectives working Meiko’s case discover a pair of suicides linked by a strange seductress and matching fox tattoos. Afraid her daughter may be next, Chieko visits a local shaman who tells her dark spirits could make her attempt for a rescue impossible.

With time running out, Meiko and her family must uncover the mystery of her mental captivity before she loses herself and her only way home forever.

Spirit of the Fox is a cerebral mystery novel. If you like Japanese culture, riveting suspense, and the power of family, then you’ll love Matthew O’Connell’s intersection of science, spirituality, and folklore.

It’s not just that it’s awesome and well-written, it’s because the solving of the mystery involved something so unexpected and astounding, it left me speechless. It left me wide-eyed and very impressed. If a mystery fan likes mind games, then this is a book to add to their TBR list.

I will admit that I thought the first few chapters were slow. That’s impatience talking. What the author did was to introduce to me the main players which gave me insight as to who they were as people, and how their relationship dynamics worked. Stay the course because it’s important. It’s crucial that a reader is made to understand Meiko’s character early on.

Meiko’s parents, Chieko and David, are divorced. It was interesting to see them explore with internal dialogue the things that attracted them to each other initially, how it later tore them apart and in the course of this story, showed that they could be strengths as well. Ultimately, I get the feeling that maybe there might be hope for a future reconciliation between Meiko’s parents, and that would make me happy.

The body of the novel is about what happens to Meiko. Now I don’t want to give away any spoilers while trying to explain the dilemma she finds herself in. The synopsis on the back cover of the book isn’t quite the way things happen in the book. Yes, Chieko, her mom, is important, but the blurb downplays her dad’s role. I want to add in her grandmother, Aiko. The strength of family is vital because it lends power to the impact of the conflict. In fact, it’s more important than a reader can imagine.

What happens to Hana in the novel is quite suggestive. Nothing really gets described in detail. It was only necessary to describe enough for the reader to understand what is about to happen or what has happened and it went no further.

I will share that there is one special moment in the book that made me gasp and shout, ‘No way!!!!” Lots of exclamation points. So close, oh my goodness, so close and then wham! I didn’t expect it. At. All.

You know how they say communication is the key to a good relationship? This tale reinforces that wisdom. It becomes key in bringing about the final showdown.

There is a hero in the story but I’m not going to tell you who it is. Brains, not brawn, wins the day. Maybe other readers wouldn’t label this person the hero, but I have my opinion and I’m happy with it.

All in all, Spirit of the Fox is a mystery worthy of being read. Maybe another reader will solve the case before the police do; I didn’t. I found this novel to be very well written, powerful in its delivery and I was thrilled that the villain was apprehended. I even enjoyed the author’s contribution at the end, explaining his own experience with the ‘spirit of the fox’. Usually I’m not impressed with what authors add about themselves at the end, but in Mr. O’Connell’s case, he’s as interesting a person as the story he penned. Every single page in this novel has value. I heartily recommend this book to everyone, not just mystery fans. It’s that good.

After enjoying her triple-scoop gelato, she leaves the shop, magically transformed into her twenty-three-year-old self.

Kate was such a likeable protagonist. She’d spent her entire life making responsible choices that gave her the highest chances of success. Her emotional stability and commitment to always doing the right thing only made her decisions in Florence more intriguing. Seeing a side of her personality that no one had caught a glimpse of in over forty years made me eager to find out how her adventures would end. There’s something so special about getting to know a protagonist this well, especially when they have good reasons for keeping certain parts of themselves tucked away somewhere private for so long.

The magical realism in the plot was handled beautifully. This was one of those stories that was perfectly poised in the intersection between the romance and fantasy genres. I couldn’t begin to pick only one of them to best describe it, so it only made sense that both of them mixed together into something that can’t be easily classified. Anyone who generally reads only one of these genres but is curious to try the other one should definitely consider starting here.

I loved the ending. Not only did it suit Kate’s personality perfectly, it left plenty of room for readers to come up with their own theories about the portions of the storyline that weren’t tied up neatly by the final scene. There were so many different ways to interpret it that I was delighted by the thought that I could pick the one that I thought best fit what we learned about the main character and the magical things she’d experienced during her trip.

Stracciatella Gelato: Melting Time was a whimsical tale that made me smile.

I adored Sam’s dedication to researching the places her family dreamed of visiting someday. She was such an intelligent and persistent kid. The fact that she imagined every detail of these trips and insisted on making them come true for her family only made me love her even more.

So many things in life can be made better if we approach them with the right attitude. This family wasn’t able to physically visit places like Paris, but that didn’t mean their imaginary trips were any less fun than the real ones. Seeing how they turned a negative situation into a positive one made me smile. There is definitely something to be said for looking for the good in the world and responding to it with gratitude.

Having a vivid imagination is a wonderful gift. There were so many things I enjoyed about these characters, but by far my favorite part of them had to do with how joyfully they mixed their imaginations into ordinary settings in their home and nearby places. Any place can be exciting if it’s viewed in the right light and allowed to shape shift into something truly special in the minds of everyone who is experiencing it.

To make things clear, this tale was written last year before the Covid-19 pandemic began. There were no references to it in the plot itself, but it could certainly be interpreted as a creative response to current travel restrictions by readers who wanted to discuss that topic with the children in their lives.

Imagination Vacation is the perfect picture book for anyone who wants to find new ways to see their old, familiar surroundings no matter what their reasons are for doing that.

But when his creation turns out to be a stinky, hairy eight-foot-tall monster that might be eating the neighborhood kids, Monty knows he must undo his experiment. Problem is, it’s the best friend he’s ever had.

What if building a new friend were as easy as performing a science experiment?

Monty was such a likeable guy. He was quirkier than most kids his age, but the hobbies and mannerisms that made him stand out from the crowd were also what made him so interesting. His unique approach to what someone should do for fun in their spare time showed off so many of the things that made him who he was as an individual.

Yes, some of Monty’s quirks lead to him being bullied because of how his classmates misunderstood him and he misunderstood them at times. I thought the scenes that showed him being mistreated by the other students at his school were realistic and well written. While this definitely isn’t true for every case of bullying, Monty did need to learn how to polish up a few of his social skills in this particular situation, and his classmates needed to learn how to be more accepting of people who march to the beat of their own drum. The author struck a nice balance between showing how both of those things can be true simultaneously while still having a lot of compassion for a kid who’s had to adjust to far too many new schools in his short lifetime.

This was one of those cases where a blurb fairly reveals the basic plot of a book while still leaving plenty of surprises for a reader to discover for themselves. I was intrigued by the little I knew when I started reading it, and I quickly realized that I enjoyed this tale twice as much as I originally thought I would. I obviously can’t go into specific details here, but I will say that this felt like something that underpromised an already attention-grabbing storyline only to over-deliver on exactly how much fun it was to read. It’s pretty marvellous when that happens!

The character development was handled beautifully. I especially appreciated seeing all of the ways in which Monty grew and changed as a person as a result of everything that happened to him during the course of this storyline. He matured so nicely while still remaining true to who he’d been all along.

Monty and the Monster is a must-read for anyone who has ever had to deal with bullying or experiments that don’t necessarily go the way they’re expected to.

Ha. Hold my beer, Grumpy Grump Face.

Dominic’s world is about to be shaken to the core when Grumpy Grump Face meets the sexiest piece of sass this side of Jersey. I was #TeamAlly from the first scene they share. She may be desperate to earn the money she needs to keep her life afloat but that doesn’t mean she’ll take his brand of bossy snobbishness. Honestly, I was laughing out loud so much with this book.

I was really intrigued with how similar Ally and Dom’s backgrounds were. Not that they had the same childhood, just that their childhood made such an impact on their adulthood. For Dom, it’s his relationship with his father. For Ally, it’s the lack of relationship with her mother. But more than that, I came to realize that it was the positive impressions made by their other parents that end up shining through.

Another plus for this reader, Dom and Ally aren’t just out of college kids just getting started in the world. They’re Gen X! I could totally relate to them on so many levels but the strained muscles after ‘strenuous exercise’ had laughing out loud for real.

While this is a romantic comedy, there are a couple of really not funny themes that are dealt with within the pages and handled very well. One steals our loved ones away while they still live and other creates such a gross disadvantaged work society that an entire modern movement was developed to combat it’s effects. Again, I thought Ms. Score handled both with dignity and honesty.

I’ve been a Lucy Score fan for a while and stalk her author page religiously for hints of new stories. This one in particular was fun to watch develop and I still wasn’t prepared for how much I fell in love with the characters until I read it. They click. As in the chemistry is so palpable, it jumped off the page with both sparks and smoke.

A great couple needs fantastic friends and side characters but also a villain. So I wouldn’t say this story has a true black hat bad guy. Don’t get me wrong, Dom’s dad deserves to chemically castrated but other than a single scene he’s mostly a background threat. It was enough tho. I instantly disliked him for how he treated Dom and his mother as much as I disliked him for how he treated others.

It’s always a good day when a favorite author releases a new story. Fans of Lucy Score as well as fans of really good story telling need this book.

This anthology also includes contributions from Alison McMahan, Brendan DuBois, Edith Maxwell and many other talented writers.

The best songs are the ones that tell unforgettable stories.

An insurance clerk fell for a showgirl in “The Pirate of Penance.” He dreamed of whisking her away from the nude dancing she did to pay the bills. I was immediately entranced by their relationship and curious to see what would happen to them next. While I can’t go into any more detail than that, I will say that the twist in the end was delightful.

Charlie, the protagonist in “Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire,” was a homeless guy who had a secret weapon to fight against an enemy that only he could see. I had a lot of sympathy for him. He was clearly dealing with some hard stuff and had few resources to draw upon other than the one I already mentioned. Seeing how he dealt with conflict kept me reading. It was well written and compelling.

“Ray’s Dad’s Cadillac” told the tale of a family that bought a new vehicle that seemed to be too expensive for their lifestyle. Figuring out how they could afford it was a great deal of fun. I had a few different theories in mind and was eager to find one which of them, if any, might actually be the correct one. What was truly delightful about the plot was the big twist in it towards the end that I didn’t see coming at all. As much as I’d liked the main character before, my opinion of her only grew even more positive by the final scene.

The Beat of Black Wings was a beautiful anthology that I’d heartily recommend to anyone who is a fan of Joni Mitchell or the mystery genre.

Lately, Chloe’s been leaving Sophie out, and she doesn’t know why. Sophie does everything she can to make her best friend happy, but it’s not working. Ms. Ellis has done it again with a new look into Sophie and her friends’ adventures in life. This time, Sophie learns just how hurtful it can be when your best friend suddenly seems to turn against you for no reason.

I can remember back to those days and those feelings. Ms. Ellis perfectly catches the emotions, and children in this age group will certainly be able to relate. The writing is smooth and easy, clear and descriptive, and I felt more like I was watching a show instead of reading a book. The characters are three-dimensional. Sophie definitely has her faults, which is refreshing, but I love that she and her friends learn from their experiences.

Highly recommended for elementary school students, boys and girls.

Can Brian and Sharon prevent catastrophe on Halloween night? Will the ghost of Jamie McVay find peace for his unquiet soul?

Sometimes local legends are true.

The details of Jamie McVey’s life and death were so vividly written that I actually googled him to see if this was based on a true story. It honestly felt like something ripped from the headlines of a small town newspaper. While it turned out to be fictional after all, this didn’t dampen my enthusiasm for figuring out what really happened to this ghost one bit. I was so interested in learning his secrets that I couldn’t stop reading.

I enjoyed finding all of the parallels that the author drew between Brian’s life in the present and Jamie’s life in the past. They had far more in common than I would have guessed, and many of their similarities were things that took some time to uncover. It was rewarding to see all of this slowly come together as Brian adjusted to life in his new community and began to explore the mystery of what really happened to Jamie.

The romantic subplot was handled beautifully. It definitely wasn’t something I was expecting to find in this tale, but I was pleased with how much time it was given to develop while all of the other storylines were going on as well. The characters involved in it had plenty of opportunities to slowly transition their friendship into a romantic connection. Given everything else that was happening in their lives, this was the perfect decision. I must also say that I really liked the idea of them being a couple! The fact that they were so well suited for each other as far as their personalities and interests go only made the idea of them falling in love even more appealing.

The Ghost of Jamie McVay is something I’d recommend just as earnestly to adult readers as I would to the middle grade audience it was originally intended for.
