Silence is her only protection

Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist B. K. (“Brynn”) Elliot chronicles Baltimore’s grittier side with her lens—a talent cultivated from her years as a teenage runaway. A reclusive figure, Brynn lives under everyone’s radar…until a photo from her past plunges her into the crosshairs of powerful enemies.

Detective Parker McCall has devoted fifteen years to trying to solve his brother’s murder, and with the release of a photo implicating Brynn as a potential suspect, he feels close to finding justice. Determined to get answers, Parker must ignore the inexplicable attraction he feels for the haunted beauty in the photo. And Brynn must decide if Parker will protect her or betray her in his hunt for a killer.

Police detective Parker McCall’s dad was a dirty cop and his brother was a drug addict who was murdered on the street. He has a lot to prove and struggles with trust issues.  Brynn is a former runaway with secrets of her own… ones that could get her killed. She and two friends have been in hiding for years, until a reporter manages to “out” her with a photo in the paper.  Things immediately start happening.

Gail Barrett doesn’t waste time kicking up the adrenaline rush here.  As soon as Parker sees the picture, everyone is at a dead run.  Multiple storylines intersect from time to time, since Brynn offers to tell Parker the truth about his brother’s murder if he looks into a teenager’s death that was ruled suicide, but she thinks was murder.

The two are on the run and in the crosshairs of many people: gangs, police, shady unknown bad guys.  They learn quickly they can trust no one but each other … or can they?

With wonderful descriptions, three dimensional characters, plenty of sexual tension and then heat between the sheets, emotion, excitement and more, Fatal Exposure is everything a good romantic suspense should be.  I can’t wait for the next book!

London, 1853. An orphaned boy, Timmy had to leave the orphanage when he grew up and had to work as a chimney sweep in people’s houses when their residents were not home.

That night didn’t start well for Timmy. He lost his coat and the money he earned earlier to some bullies before he went to clean a chimney. It wasn’t so bad despite the smothering dust. Then he fell and cracked his ankle.

When a chimney sweep is badly injured while working alone in a cold, dark house, he has no choice but to wait for someone to find him before it’s too late. The problem is, Timmy’s a homeless loner who doubts anyone has noticed he’s missing.

This story was so descriptive I could smell the soot on Timmy’s clothing and feel the bitterly cold night air seep into my bones. Every day is a struggle to survive for this character, and my heart ached for him as he works incredibly long hours in a dangerous environment in order to eke out a living. Even though I know the cultural mores were different in the 1830s, it’s difficult to imagine how any of the adults in his life could have been ethically comfortable with forcing a boy barely into his teens to sleep on the streets and face the constant threat of starvation.

Take my age recommendation for this piece seriously. Timmy lives in a violent, chaotic world that too dark for younger readers. Abuse, neglect, and child abandonment are rampant in this story. While none of the descriptions of these things are particularly graphic, Timmy has never had a loving relationship with a parent figure to counterbalance his traumatic experiences, and he is so deeply scarred by his past that he doesn’t realize how much he’s missed out on. His only positive memories of the orphanage involve having a warm place to sleep and a few bites of food in his stomach.

The final scene made me wish I could keep following Timmy’s path. It provided closure for the main character’s biggest conflicts, but it was open-ended enough to allow for multiple interpretations of what actually is happening and what Timmy should expect to discover in the near future.

O Res Mirabilis is a modern-day Dicksonian fable. I highly recommend it to readers who like detailed descriptions of another time and place and see ambiguity as a chance to choose their own ending for a sympathetic protagonist.

*****

The first thing I would tell a new author is to hold to the joy of writing. The actual joy of being immersed in your story, the joy of creation, the beautiful energy which comes when you are creating which makes the soul come alive. I have learned it is this joy, which can sustain me when the roller coaster, which is an author’s life, hits bottom. So many things in this business we have no control over but we do control the writing, where the joy lives.

Second, I would remind a new author not to forget to play. Play with words, play with structure, and play with rhyming and rhythm and with your story people and with your stories. Some of the best stories came about as a result of playing and they carry that energy with them. They come to life in a playful way, which the reader may then too enjoy.

Third, remember the page must do the work. The page stands alone whether you are sending it to an editor, an agent, a critique partner or group, or whether your book is in the hands of the reader. You will not be there to explain the page, defend the page or sell the page. The page must be strong enough to stand-alone. Do the things it takes to help that page stand-alone.

Fourth, you must also do the work. The story might be your baby, but perhaps your baby needs braces in order for everyone to be able to see that beautiful smile. If you take critique or editing advice personally and refuse to do anything about those crooked teeth it’s your story child who will shine less brightly.

Fifth, remember to celebrate the small things. Each step on the journey can be a blessing and a moment to be thankful. Remember each moment of the day only comes once.

Sixth, protect and guard your writing time and your process. This may require a bit of forcefulness on your part. But if you do not respect your writing time, how can you expect anyone else to?

Seventh, words once they are out there cannot be taken back. Whether they are words printed in a book, posted online or spoken words, once they are released you cannot retrieve them and redo them. Words carry energy. What are you sending out? Be careful not to rush your words and be aware of what you are sending into the world.

Eighth, at the end of the day, remind yourself of the first bit of advice posted here. Remember the joy before you go to sleep and be thankful. For all the challenges which come with being an author, it is one of the most joyful endeavors a person can experience, if you can remember to keep refocusing on the joy.

Aaron Greene is a shy, stay-in-the-background young Jewish boy, the child of shy, stay-in-the-background parents. Only a year out of high school, he has a part-time job as a mailboy in a large Atlanta bank. One morning, on his way to work, he is kidnapped and the kidnappers demand a ransom of ten million dollars – not from his parents, but from the bank that employs him.

The bank rejects the demand.

And what begins as a curious crime – the abduction of an unknown, a nobody – soon ignites a national crusade for Aaron’s safe return, because everyone, in one way or another, understands what it is like to be a nobody.

For the kidnappers, the money has no meaning. The mastermind, Ewell Pender, is a wealthy eccentric, an elderly board member of the bank, yet also the man who organizes the campaign to raise Aaron’s ransom. His criminal associates are young nonconformists, dreamers and daredevils. Keeping Aaron in the luxury of the Pender mansion is, to them, a clever and teasing adventure. For Aaron, it is not life-threatening; it is life-changing.

Caught in the mystery is a journalist who unwittingly is used as a pawn by the kidnappers to tell Aaron’s story, and also a detective who bends rules and follows his instinct as much as his training. For both, the kidnapping reveals a profound understanding of their own lives in the complex workings of the world around them.

Richly written, driven by baffling twists in plot, and featuring powerful portrayals of memorable characters, The Kidnapping of Aaron Greene goes beyond the elements of a classic crime. It is an experiment in human manipulation and behavior, and a riveting study of the passions and apathy historically exhibited by society.

If you were going to kidnap someone, would you kidnap a nobody, someone with no money, no resources? That’s what happens in The Kidnapping of Aaron Greene.  The reasons behind this unique kidnapping reveal a complex look at society and what drives it.

Terry Kay has written a page turning mystery with incredible twists and turns. We see the story unfold from multiple perspectives with a group of really engaging characters. A newsman’s voice is used on the kidnapper’s demand tapes, but Cody never said what is on the tapes. His phone was tapped and the tapes are spliced, but why was his voice chosen? Cody and his friend Detective Menotii work hard to unravel the mystery, but just as they appear to figure out something, the story takes another turn. There are wives and ex-wives. There are new loves and old. There is a pushy radio talk show host and a troubled bank. Nothing is at it seems on the surface. Aaron himself is kept “imprisoned,” but in the lap of luxury with access to a hot tub and sauna, a garden, great food, and videos, everything except freedom.

Kay has woven a masterfully imaginative plot that really rings true. His characters are very well-defined and for the most part likeable, so the reader really cares what happens to them. The mastermind behind the original kidnapping is a wealthy eccentric elderly man named Ewell Pender, and he demonstrates the ability to manipulate people to do what he feels is right. He also organizes a campaign to raise the ransom money, as this kidnapping is not about money. The truth behind the kidnapping is something that Kay’s readers must decide for themselves. I certainly had questions at the end that I wish had been answered more clearly, but the characters did end up in better places than those they occupied at the beginning of the novel. Furthermore, the main characters discovered life-changing understandings about themselves and their worlds.

I recommend this novel to any lovers of mysteries with unusual angles and plot twists. I look forward to reading more of Kay’s novels.

A casual meeting brings her into contact with a man who stirs her emotions, but she is determined to keep things on a business footing. This is fine until a pregnant woman forces them closer together.

This novel has its ups and downs emotionally, but there are many light-hearted bits too and mysterious happenings in the woods. Are they magical? Or is it someone trying to scare the women away? I love the way the author wound the women’s wishes together and how the resolution of each depended on her interaction with the group. The story moves at a steady pace with highs and lows, but at all times I wanted to know what was happening next.

At the end of the book I was left wondering, did magic have a hand in the results? Or was it just coincidence? I really, really wanted it to be magic. Love this book! Well done, Ms Lovering.

Welcome to Cupid, where every wish for love comes true…

For years, a small group of women in Cupid, TX, led by Millie Greenway, have taken it upon themselves to keep the Cupid legend alive. Now Millie has roped her four disbelieving granddaughters into joining the cause.

Lace Bettingfield knows for a fact that the Cupid legend is bogus. As a shy sixteen-year-old, she left a letter at the statue and got nothing in return but heaps of embarassment when her letter ended up printed in the school newspaper. But now the boy she longed for is back in town and Lace can’t help wondering…what if?

Ah, yes! This one brings back memories of high school years and the emotional growing pains that went along with them.

Lace Bettingfield well remembers the vicious teasing and trauma of falling in love with an ‘older’ boy, who was the football hero and sought after by all the girls. As time passes, she realizes her bad time in high school has an upside. It toughened her, made her strong and resilient. She’d conquered her stutter, lost weight and gained it back because she chose to. She is now healthy and knows who she is and is comfortable in her own skin. Moreover, she has earned a Ph.D. in plant science and is back in Cupid, Texas doing what she loves to do. She is in charge of the Botanical Gardens where the box for “Letters to Cupid” is located. She loves the arid Trans-Pecos area of Texas where it takes toughness for people and plants alike to survive.

When Pierce Hollister, the Cowboys quarterback who is sidelined with a broken leg, returns to Cupid to see his father and brother Malcolm, all the long-ago high school hoopla surfaces as Lace’s extended family and friends recall and elaborate on every painful moment Lace lived through back then.

Somewhere along the way from high school to becoming a pro, Pierce bought into his own press and now accepts the accolades and hero worship with equanimity. However, there is a niggling deep inside him that nags—will his leg ever heal so he can be at the top of his game like he had been before? He is Cupid’s local celebrity and his father’s favorite son; a fact that makes for strained feeling between Pierce and his younger brother Malcolm. Their relationship makes an attention-getting side story.

When Piece sees the grownup Lace, his old friend’s little sister that was off-limits to him in high school because of that unspoken male code of ‘don’t hit on your friend’s sister’. Now that the code no longer applies, he turns on the charm which Lace vows to ignore. As the ‘mating dance’ ebbs and flows with all the people of Cupid putting in their two cents, the reader gets quite an emotional rollercoaster ride.

I struggled a little with the over abundance of secondary characters, but the sparkling metaphors, analogies, etc. make the reading delightful. Expressions like: “spunk of a chipmunk”, “you can’t push a river”, ‘wants to devour him like a starving hawk moth caterpillar devours a tomato plant”, eyes like blue gas flames”, “lit her up like a match to gasoline” and so many more show the reader so much about the action, the emotions and the characters. Also, the threads of humor, fun, illness, and long-lasting emotional wounds, along with that strong, enduring thread of love that generates some super love scenes make the design of this tale captivating. Good entertainment!

It’s bad enough she’d promised her best friend she’d find his brother and drag his sorry ass home to say goodbye before he dies, but ending up the victim of a bloodsucker was definitely not on her agenda. One minute she’s stranded out on a deserted stretch of road in the middle of the night, on her way to find Baron Silver, and the next she’s in the clutches of a vampire on a mission to make Baron and anyone he cares about suffer. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Baron has offered her nothing but heartache and disappointment. Seemed some things never changed. Or did they?

My third book by J.K. Coi proved to be just as entertaining and enjoyable as the others. I’ve always been a sucker for suckers—bloodsuckers that is—so I was hooked on page one. Max has had a pretty hard life surrounded by constant disappointments, sadness, and rejection. Her father left before she was born. Her mother constantly drunk and drugged herself into a stupor. Her best friend died a little more each day. And the only man she ever loved walked out on her without so much as an explanation or goodbye. It’s no wonder this woman is filled with bitterness, distrust, and anger. Who wouldn’t be?

Baron’s life hasn’t been a picnic. He carried burdens that Maxine and his brother didn’t even know about. Maybe he made some bad choices, but he’s not the uncaring rake Max makes him out to be. It takes a lot of determination and hard work on his part to make her put aside the anger and hostility she carries to see the man he truly is. Watching the struggle is what makes their characters seem so real. Ms. Coi has a knack for creating complicated relationships with major hurdles and struggles. Once again I found myself wanting to strangle them both at times, but that’s what I love so much about her stories. I want them to work through the issues, so I’m right there with them, feeling every triumph and struggle. There were very few editing errors to distract me; an extra or missing word here and there, but nothing major to detract from the story.

I loved Immortal Kiss and will definitely add it to my keeper list, along the Dark Immortal and Immortal Duty. I’m still hoping for some more books in the series. The introduction of the Enforcer really grabbed my interest. He sounded absolutely yummy. Scary as hell, but yummy. Wouldn’t it be something for him to find a mate? Alas, I can only dream unless Ms. Coi takes mercy upon this reader’s hungry appetite for more.

Vampires, hunky heroes, danger, and lots of great sex, what more can you ask for in a book? Ms. J.K. Coi delivers the total package in book two of her immortal series. It’s one I’m glad I didn’t miss.

How to Handle Negative Criticism

Oooooh, this is a touchy subject, but a good one. I’ve seen arguments to read your reviews or not to read your reviews. Angst over people loving your work or hating your work. LOL, I’ve had both, just so you know. Personally, I’m just getting started and I want to hear everything people have to say. I don’t care if it’s good or bad. (Well, I do like to hear the good more!) But bad reviews or critiques can be very useful too. I’m of the mindset that if someone takes the time to write a response to reading one of my books, I’m going to do my darndest to read them. Sometimes people are just being petty, or dumb…yes, I said it. DUMB. When someone tells you in their review that they gave you a low rating because your story was too short…yeah, dumb. But hey, it’s a free world and everyone is entitled to their opinion. You just have to learn to not take it personally. Critiques and reviews are opportunities to improve my craft. Hearing things that people like, dislike, etc, are all chances for me to improve, but…If I take the critique as a personal attack. I can’t learn anything. My critique partner knows she can tear my manuscript apart and that I prefer her to do that versus holding back. Even if I don’t agree with something that someone says. I want the OPPORTUNITY to hear it and decide. Some people call it having a thick skin, but I call it an open mind.

Cedric and his best friend and schoolmate Brigham can’t resist the mysteries of the Moor near Cedric’s house, especially after hearing tales of a monster. The monster they seek turns out to be a young werewolf living in isolation — who cannot risk word of his existence getting to the superstitious townsfolk. In order to assure his continued safety, the werewolf takes Brigham as a hostage. While Brigham faces confinement with a monster, he will soon discover the young man underneath the legend.

Brigham and Cedric walked into the woods hoping to meet a real life monster, but little did they know how well their wish would be granted.

Cedric and Brigham’s sense of adventure endeared me to this story immediately. Both boys are convinced that there is such a thing as monster, and they would do anything to meet one in person. Little is revealed about their childhoods, but I could tell they’d been fast friends for a long time based on how well these characters knew one another.

As the plot progressed I wondered why no one seemed to be looking for Brigham when it became obvious that he wasn’t coming home for dinner. The reason we’re given for the lack of interest in Brigham’s well-being makes sense over a shorter time period, but eventually the authorities would become involved if someone this age suddenly stopped attending school.

I had some difficulty determining the appropriate age recommendation for this book. Some parents might find the mild cursing inappropriate for younger kids. There were also kissing scenes that, while quite innocent, once again might not appeal to readers who haven’t hit puberty yet. Other than these concerns I would have no qualms recommending it for readers 10 and older. The plot and the author’s sense of humor would definitely appeal to this age group. Perhaps one day it will even become a series! I don’t know if Ms. Ennis is interested in writing more about Cedric and Brigham’s adventures, but I do see potential for such a thing to be developed.

Shel’s Moor is a great recommendation for reluctant readers. The action-driven plot and subtle humor compelled me to keep reading until I knew how it all ended, and when it was finished I wished I could spend just a few more pages with these characters!
