In 19th Century England Caroline Verlaine, a young widow, travels to the Coast of Kent in search of her sister who disappeared while investigating some nearby ruins. She finds work at an old estate overlooking the shivering sands, powerful quicksands that have been known to swallow entire ships. Her employers are a strange, distrustful family, haunted by the past. Caroline nonetheless finds herself drawn to them and to the son, Napier Stacy, in particular. The further Caroline becomes involved with the family, the more she learns about their secrets and, even more shockingly, about what happened to her sister.

Victoria Holt’s The Shivering Sands is an absolute classic of the genre. The story is set in an isolated spot of England’s coast in the late nineteenth century. The host family is slightly aristocratic, but has seen tragedy. The son of the household is a dark character that insists he did not commit a terrible crime, but we are forced to wonder. The main character is a lovely, yet somewhat tragic figure herself. All of the key ‘classic’ points are there.

The main character, Caroline, is very much a character of her times. She’s clever, but careful, she’s investigating (and very motivated) but not a demanding or confrontational person. I found her believable. She’s suffered her own tragedies, but nothing like the Stacy family. She’s an enormously easy character to sympathize with, although the modern reader might wish for her to be a more take-charge woman.

Much of the story is revealed in conversation, and this is certainly an older ‘style.’ Modern readers might find the action a bit slow, and the discussions slightly unrealistic (phrasing meant to reflect the time). However, the writing is beautiful, and I find that the style helps create and maintain a haunting aura. Suspense builds as the story continues; both in the romantic sense, and in the sense of impending danger. We slowly grow more and more sure that there is a malevolent force out there…
The main constituent of the Silagra is sildenafil citrate best price on levitra that is also useful for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. While it is undeniable that age doesn’t equal asexuality, there is still very little public or professional recognition of the sexual health cheap cialis of older people. Buying sexual enhancement cheap generic viagra drugs online comes as an aid to them, as it provides an easy access for them to buy the generic type of the drug instead of the brand by itself . It is possible that a particular product as per his viagra online without prescription will as that would be a unique and appealing way.
The intrigue is complex and very well done. One part, our initial motivation, is Caroline’s missing sister, Roma. Caroline wends her way into the Napier home in an effort to find Roma. There are family secrets, scandals, and a piece of coastline famed for shipwrecks. You have a sense that anything could happen and be covered up – and soon, we readers are worried for Caroline. Usually, romance readers worry that the romance will work out as hoped – in this case, we are hoping for survival really.

Holt was a true master though: There are points in the plot we are hoping for, while others, we cannot guess.

This is not a light romance with a hint of suspense, but truly an evocative (even eerie) page-turner with a strong sense of imminent danger.

If you haven’t read Victoria Holt before, this is truly a change of pace. If you are familiar with the author – then this might seem a touch ‘in the formula,’ yet it is still intriguing. The Shivering Sands is a great read.

Chicago real estate agent Laurie Atkins is gardening beneath the relentless August sun when her dog’s frantic barks divert her to a dead body sprawled on the front acreage of her Wisconsin summer home. She rushes inside to phone the police, but the body disappears. Laurie begins to doubt her own sanity. Then the unidentified body turns up on the driveway of Helga Beckermann, her devious neighbor.

When her emotionally withdrawn husband skips town on the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, Laurie uncovers truths she’d rather deny. Her family in peril, Laurie enlists the help of two women she thinks she can trust: former Chicago Tribune investigative reporter Mitzy Maven, and tough-talking CPD detective Maggie O’Connor.

Laurie Atkins finds a body in her front yard, but then the body disappears and no one seems willing to believe her. Then the body turns up in her neighbor’s driveway, but no one can identify it. This is a mystery with enough twists and turns to keep everyone guessing. There are secrets piled on top of secrets. There are multiple characters with the same initials. Nothing makes sense until the very end of the story.

Jennie Spallone has written an intriguing and mystifying plot involving a lot of very different characters, many of whom are lying and withholding information. The plot moves between Wisconsin and Chicago, and it is told from many different perspectives, with jumps forward and backwards in time. The multiple perspectives do provide the reader with a lot of information, which is helpful, but occasionally the point of view gets broken and multiple perspectives operate in the same scene. There are also some minor inconsistencies in the details. For example, twice the author says that Laurie Atkins has been married for ten years and twice she says Laurie has been married for thirteen years. The length of the marriage is not significant, but possibly another round of editing would help to fix the minor glitches in details and point of view.

However, the plot is engaging and while I would have liked to have seen more depth to the characters, overall, it hangs together well and I was eager to discover how it would all work out. It is also refreshing to have a mystery novel with very little violence. And it is fun to have a real estate agent solving the mystery.

Mystery fans seeking a plot with plenty of twists and turns, along with a slew of secrets, will enjoy unraveling the story behind the mystery man’s corpse.

Seventeen-year-old Carrie is lying in her backyard ignoring all the looming responsibilities in her life, when a fox makes a mad dash across the grass in front of her. After she manages to keep her dog from attacking the frightened animal, the fox turns to Carrie and seems to bow in gratitude before he disappears into the bushes. All Carrie knows in that moment is that something has unexpectedly changed in her life.

Carrie has been best friends with Lindsay Smith and Rebecca Campbell for years. During a summer when they should focus on choosing colleges, the girls suddenly find themselves swept away on the adventure of their lives. The fox reappears three days later and reveals to Carrie that he is Adom, emissary to the king of Hadariah. With his land of music and magic in peril, Adom has been sent to seek help from Carrie and her friends. In the blink of an eye, the three teenage girls go from living an average suburban life to being the champions of a world where they must contend with giants, witches, and magical beings. Will they ever make it home once more?

Carrie dreads her upcoming senior year in high school when she will have to “make decisions about her future, decide a path, and begin to grow up—something she dreaded with all her heart and soul. She wished she could just run away and have an adventure like the characters in the books she loved.” But beware what you wish for as you may just get it! Carrie and her friends Lindsay and Rebecca follow a talking fox named Adom through a gap in a bush in Carrie’s backyard and end up on a quest to save Adom’s world, the world of magic where all the stories the girl’s grandmothers told them when they were small actually happened.

Alisse Lee Goldenberg has written a charming magical story showing the importance of trusting in things which cannot be seen and believing in the magic surrounding each and every one of us. The girls run into many adventures as they work to fulfill their quest, and they meet various beings along the way who are not always trustworthy. Carrie, Lindsay, and Rebecca have been best friends since pre-school in spite of their very different personalities. I liked all three of the girls, especially Carrie. They did seem younger than seniors in high school, but possibly that is because they live rather sheltered and protected lives. They have to grow up fast, though, as the obstacles in their quest become harder and harder.

King Asmodeus has stolen the strings from a magical violin and in so doing, removed all the music from the land, dooming his world to a slow and painful death as the sun no longer shines. He is doing this because he is horrified by the human world where, as he says, “You people do not believe in anything you cannot see, touch, or spend. You are a self-serving, selfish lot. If we all disappear, dissolve into nothingness, no one from your world would notice or even care. No one would mourn us. No one would even remember we existed at all. Your world already exists in darkness.” Is Asmodeus right? He is certainly very powerful and deceitful, but will Carrie and her friends be able to defeat him?

This novel is written as an exposition on the world of fairy tales, explaining the actual events that underpin many of the tales the girls heard as children. However, Carrie and her friends are getting the real story, not watered down simplified tales. They make friends in this magical world and they certainly believe that our world needs the magical world. This belief fuels their determination to succeed, but is this determination enough? The plot moves quickly and Adom’s world is fully and richly described. There are mysteries and puzzles to solve and tough decisions to make, and Goldenberg brings her readers right into the story so they feel as if they too are on the quest.

Can three teenage suburban girls save this world? Will they succeed on their quest? The Strings of the Violin will touch its readers’ hearts with magic and wonder, something our world truly needs. If you enjoy fantasy, especially the world of fairy tales, be sure not to miss out on this wonderful adventure.

Shanghai Love is a gripping novel about the unlikely love story that develops between a Chinese herbalist and a Jewish refugee in Shanghai during World War II. Peilin is betrothed to Kwan Yao, the only son of a wealthy pearl farmer. However, months before their wedding, Yao is killed by the Japanese in the Nanjing Massacre. The Kwans insist on proceeding with the wedding and beautiful Peilin is married to a ghost husband. When an uncle passes away, Peilin is sent to Shanghai to manage the Kwan family herbal shop. Meanwhile, in Berlin, Henri graduates from medical school just as Hitler rises to power and unleashes prejudice and violence against the Jewish population. He flees to Shanghai where he’s befriended by Ping, a young disfigured rickshaw driver. Ping introduces Henri to his sister Peilin. Through her kindness, Henri becomes fascinated with Chinese herbs as well as the exotic culture surrounding him. Shanghai Love is a classic story of love’s triumph over adversity.

This story caught my attention because one of the main characters was married to a ghost. Her marriage was arranged years ago and by her wedding day, her potential mate had been killed in the war. I knew about arranged marriages, but not about ghost weddings. Can you imagine being wed, living in his parent’s home and serving his mother with no hope of a real wedding and life? I can’t!

Ms. Wong sets her story back in the 40’s when the Nazi’s were persecuting Jews. She peppers her story with weak people who become strong due to circumstances. That’s a very realistic way to look at life. Her words flow well and I felt like I was back in a simpler time when all that mattered was having enough to eat and a place to live.

She makes her characters human. Each has suffered great sorrow, each is moving on because there is no other choice. Henri is Jewish and just barely escapes Germany with his life. He uses the single ticket available to go to Shanghai because his Uncle insists. Peilin has lost her family in a fire and sent to Shanghai to take over an herb shop and help people use herbal remedies for their problems. She’s also searching for her brother. He’s her last relative and she wants to reunite with him.

This romance is very sweet. He’s white and Jewish; she’s Chinese. Their own traditions keep them apart. They enjoy their time together but feel there is no hope for more. I really enjoyed how the author handled this part of the story. She shares Chinese traditions and makes them seem real. They were foreign to me, but I can see the beauty of their traditions.

Another thing that I learned from reading this story was that there were quite a few Chinese and Jewish refugees in Shanghai. I like reading books I learn from. I also really liked this romance. The author did a lovely job of teaching you some facts and making you love her characters. I was impressed enough with this story that the book is going in my personal library as a keeper.

Why don’t you give it a read and see what you think? I bet the author steals your heart, too, with this story.

What happens when inventions and scientific discoveries outpace society’s response to them? Is it possible to prepare for a future no one can predict?

This collection made me wish I was an explorer even though I’ve never understood the appeal of that profession before. While exploring other worlds and times can be quite dangerous, there is something mesmerizing about being the first person to try a new technological breakthrough or visit an unknown place.

In “The Calling Stars” Douglas and Rebecca have an unusual backup plan to protect them from their dangerous occupation. They are introduced to the reader as a blissfully happy engaged couple, but Douglas talks down to Rebecca and refuses to listen to what she had to say. On the rare occasion that he does listen to her their conversations feel stilted. The premise immediately captured my imagination, but the dysfunction in Rebecca and Douglas’ relationship made it difficult for me to root for them to find one another after they are separated by circumstances beyond their control.

It was easy to figure out the twist in “Assassin” early on, but I still found it amusing to see how Drooper McGinnis reacts when he is sent back in time to stop a dangerous man. Completing this mission will erase his debt to society, but will it truly clear his name? While the main plot points were put to rest in the final scene they would have made more of an impact on me if I had been given a little more insight into Drooper’s personality beforehand.

The best story here by far is “Die Hard.” I could imagine precisely how frustrated Emil Ludlow feels when his monthly shipment of science fiction novels is held back due to a ridiculous bureaucratic error, and the series of letters he sends to the Science Fantasy Home Book Club in an attempt to fix it are hilarious. I never wanted Emil’s misadventures to end, and I hope to hear from him again soon in the sequel that could easily come out of what happens in the last letter from his book club.

I had such high hopes for “Messiah.” When Dr. MacDonald and Dr. Harcourt first land on the alien planet I could never have imagined what their samples of plants, soil, rocks, and water will tell them about this virgin world. The answers to the mystery the uncover felt tacked on, though, and based on what I learned about their personalities and ethical codes I had a difficult time understanding a decision one of the characters makes at the end.

At first I was a little confused by the inclusion of “The Wraith.” The science fiction elements in it were not immediately apparent, and as much as I liked hearing Tank Richards impression of the new gin join he’s visiting and the stranger he meets there I wondered how “The Wraith” would fit in with the rest of the stories in this collection. Figuring out this mystery was such a rewarding experience that as soon as I finished reading I immediately started over again with the first paragraph.

The first time I read “Space Pilot” I thought I misunderstood what Charley the space pilot was doing on his test run. Certain aspects of the plot were so sparse that I needed to read it again before I realized that my first interpretation was correct. It has a fantastic premise, but “Space Pilot” would have had more of an impact on me had more time been taken to develop Charley’s personality and include subtle clues about what was actually happening to him.

Science Fiction From Out There kept me on my toes from beginning to end. This is a great choice for readers who prefers science fiction that is more interested in society’s response to unbelievable technological breakthroughs than with how those discoveries were made.

Enga Dancing Flower knows her Neanderthal tribe is in trouble. The dark seasons are becoming longer and the mammoth herds are fleeing south. When the tribal leader is found stabbed to death, the new leader thinks Enga did it. Expulsion and certain death loom. Enga must find the murderer to save her tribe — and herself.

How do you solve a murder when you’re the prime suspect, your tribe is on the brink of starvation, and time is running out almost as quickly as the list of people you can trust?

Enga Dancing Flower has struggled to fit in with her adoptive family for years. Her desire to be fully accepted is evident early on in this story, and her refusal to give up on this dream made my heart ache. I was surprised to see how quickly Enga and her twin sister reveal themselves to be well-rounded individuals whose emotional bond surpasses their strikingly different habits and traits. Ms. George clearly invested a lot of time into developing her main characters, and her hard work pays off when Enga’s sensitive, intelligent, and kind personality shines through the very first paragraph.

It was difficult to remember the names, histories, and family ties of the nearly 30 men, women, and children of Enga’s tribe, many of whom were briefly introduced early on and then not mentioned again for several chapters. I would have preferred to see a detailed family tree included after the acknowledgements so that I could quickly refresh my memory about how certain individuals were related to one another.

Despite my occasional confusion, I wished this book would never end. Ms. George described Enga’s world in such vivid detail I felt like I’d travelled back through time and was experiencing the triumphs and tragedies of Hamapa people alongside them. The beginning of each chapter includes a short quote about what the scientific community thinks life was like for the various hominid species back then, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how this information was incorporated into her story in sometimes unexpected ways. While I was satisfied with the ending, I’m hoping that the author’s decision to leave a few key questions unanswered was a subtle hint that we will hear from these characters again soon.

Death in the Time of Ice is a gripping mystery, and it’s the best example of prehistoric fiction I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves either genre.

Sometimes a wife has to go to extreme measures to save her marriage. Cissy Holden isn’t happy. Her husband Len doesn’t help out around the house and shows little respect for her. Even worse, their sex life leaves much to be desired. The chemistry they enjoyed when they first met has faded and Cissy is at her wits’ end.

She decides to take matters into her own hands—literally—and introduces her wayward husband to the concept of a Female-Led Relationship (FLR). At first he’s all for it since he’s getting sexual favors for doing chores, but as Cissy ratchets up the control, Len starts to wonder if he’s less of a man if he lets her. Even more confusing is the fact that the sex, another area where Cissy has taken control, is through the roof. What does that say about him? Only time will tell if Len will fully jump on board, or if Cissy has made the biggest mistake of her life.

The unique and intriguing ideas Cissy comes up with to revive her marriage had me at the edge of my seat in anticipation of, not only what she would do next, but how her husband Len would react to the changes in their relationship.

It is easy for couples to take each other for granted after being together for so long. I think that this story and Cissy’s ability to take charge of her and her husband’s future as inspiring because it left me with a sense of pride and strength that we woman can hold the power to change our relationships and to demand what we want even if it means we have to dish out a spanking now and again.

While this is a BDSM story, it is more about the empowerment of woman, and a couple’s struggle to find balance in their changed relationship. Many dynamics in the relationship change throughout the years, as their personalities change. The author was able to demonstrate this aspect of growth in a way that was relatable as well as fascinating. I can say that from the very beginning the author had my attention and held it until the end. I could have continued reading on and on about Cissy and Len rediscovered themselves as well as each other.

Len’s journey in this story was probably the most remarkable. I wish that more men would be as understanding and willing to do what it takes to try and fix problems within their home. I really enjoyed the fact that he took the time out to try and understand his new feelings as he and his wife discovered new things. It allowed me to see the story as long term and not just a quick fix. While in the beginning I may have questions the validity of Cissy and Len’s ability to stay together, in the end I knew Len would do whatever it took to keep the woman he so clearly loved.

While I learned about Cissy and Len’s relationship I discovered more about myself as well. That is why this story of self discovery will be added to my read again list, and I would enthusiastically recommend it to others to read.

How Far Out Are Your Fantasies? When Rebekah Blake becomes the Sinners’ new soundboard operator, she has no idea that red-hot drummer Eric Sticks is the only man who can give her everything her dirty mind desires…

Wicked Beat is one of Olivia Cunning’s Sinners On Tour books, and, as with the others in this series, it is filled with laughter, tears and some very seriously hot role-playing between the main characters.

Sinners: heavy metal’s ultimate band is on tour, and the men are slowly but surely finding their perfect partners. Brian and Myrna, Jace and Aggie, even Sed has reclaimed the love of his life, Jessica. Drummer Eric Sticks is more than a bit envious, wishing he could find what they have.

After the bus crash, as their soundboard man recovers from his injuries, he suggests a replacement: his sister, Rebekah, a fully trained sound specialist herself. When Eric sees her, he falls hard, but is disappointed when Rebekah only has eyes for Trey Mills. Eric has always been a voyeur, willing to observe when his band mates allow, but after meeting Rebekah, he wants more, and wants to gain control over his ‘minute man’ problems. As for Rebekah, she has some issues, and discovers after traveling with the band, that Eric is the perfect man for her; he’s honest, plain spoken and doesn’t play the kind of head games most men do. As these two grow closer, Rebekah is able to find herself, and realizes Eric may just be the one to give her back her life. But there are roadblocks to the happy ever after for Rebekah and Eric, as her mother is determined that Rebekah marry her old boyfriend Isaac, and goes to great lengths to keep Eric and her daughter apart. Can these two weather the storms and find smooth sailing for their future? Will the secrets all be revealed? Can Rebekah and Eric face the worst and accept whatever may be ahead?

I love this world that Ms. Cunning has built, and her characters are engaging and well developed, with many facets to uncover as you get to know them. My biggest guilty pleasure is heavy metal music, and the groups playing it, so this was a fun peek into a world I’ll never see any other way. I also like that Ms. Cunning shows a softer side to her rockers, making them real people, not just cardboard cutouts or one dimensional jerks. After reading this series, I can say this about Sinners: Brian and Trey may be the soul of Sinners with their marvelous guitars, Jace may provide a solid base, and Sed may be the voice of Sinners, but Eric Sticks is its ever beating heart.

Rebekah ‘Reb’ Blake is talented, smart and determined to wring everything she can out of life. After her battle with cancer, she has some serious issues with self worth and body image, and her ex certainly didn’t help by telling her she was unattractive to him. When not one but two of the Sinners come on to her, she starts to hope he was wrong. As she grows closer to Eric, he is able to bring out the spontaneous and wild woman that lives inside, and I loved watching as Rebekah blossomed though her relationship with Eric. I liked her strength, and her willingness to try it all, at least once. And I loved that she was able to figure out what Eric’s problems in the bedroom were and come up with unique and totally hot ways to help him.

Eric Sticks is talented, sexy and, beneath it all, very lonely. He wants what his friends have found, but is willing to settle for what he can have; vicarious pleasure through voyeurism, and the occasional touch when allowed. When Eric met Rebekah, it was instant attraction for him, and he felt they were meant for each other; she even had the same blue hair color as he did. When she seems to want Trey more, he hopes she will agree to at least let him watch them together. But, for the first time, Eric doesn’t really want to watch, and I loved watching as he let Rebekah see the side he keeps hidden; the sweet and sexy man behind the wild drummer of Sinners. I really enjoy watching these two together, wondering just what they would get up to next.

Wicked Beat is not all fun and joy. There is the tension when Rebekah’s mother loses it and tries to sabotage Eric and Rebekah’s relationship, and her ex, Isaac, does his share to derail them as well. There are several surprising secrets in this one, and as they are revealed, not everyone is happy with the outcomes. But there are some very touching moments, especially when Rebekah has to go to the doctor for a checkup and Eric pours his heart out to her. The roles these two play, in and out of the bedroom, are such fun to see, and each one is an adventure, as is the screaming hot sex these two manage to have in the most unusual places. There were some tears shed as I read, and many smiles and giggles too.

To get the true feel for this tour with Sinners, to see how it all rolled out, I recommend the following reading order for the series: Backstage Pass, Rock Hard, Hot Ticket, Wicked Beat, and finally Double Time.

Successful scientist Jonathan Moore thought he knew how the world worked – until the day he discovered a mermaid on a Cornish beach. As his outlook on life is changed forever by the beautiful maid, Jonathan is torn between his family and the lure of freedom beneath the sea – for which there is a terrible price to pay…

Did you know that scientists know more about the topography of Mars than the floors of our deepest oceans here on Earth? Imagine what secrets might await us in those dark, unexplored places.

Jonathan and Anne have finally had their greatest wish come true, but the stress of caring for a fussy newborn while Jonathan is on the cusp of making an extraordinary breakthrough at work is exposing the frayed edges of their marriage. As sad as it was to see them struggling so much, I was mesmerized by the detailed pictures Mr. Peel painted in my mind about their personalities. It felt as if Anne and Jonathan were old, dear friends instead of characters in a story, and my impression of them is so strong I feel like I’d instantly recognize them if we magically met in person.

I couldn’t understand why Jonathan stopped communicating with Anne when she first pushed him away. Every marriage has its rough patches, but both spouses in this story respond to the overwhelming changes in their lives by doing everything other than asking for what they really need. Had Mr. Peel included at least one conversation between Anne and Jonathan in which they were honest about what they wanted I would have given this book a higher rating. Not everyone is emotionally healthy enough to listen to their spouse in this sort of situation, of course, but I never understood why neither person in this marriage was willing to take that first step and at least attempt to fix the situation for the sake of their son.

Kerra’s hauntingly beautiful descriptions of life as a mermaid made me wish her scenes would never end. I would be quite interested in reading a sequel from her point of view if it explored the deepest mystery in mermaid civilization.

The Maid of Trelanton is the sort of tale I’d recommend without hesitation to a friend who is completely unfamiliar with the fantasy genre. It is a solid introduction to magical realism that should not be missed, and I hope to hear more from these characters soon.
