Lord Adrik lives alone, an isolated hermit whose reputation is tarnished by the death of his wife. The villagers believe he murdered her and now buys young maidens who he does unspeakable things to and then casts them aside. Why then does Katherine accept a position as the next female companion?

Katherine had her own reasons to escape her life on the goat farm. At first afraid of Lord Adrik, she soon becomes friendly with him and then they take the next step and become lovers.

I liked the mystery of this book, it was pretty obvious what happened but not how it happened. I also liked the fact Katherine did not immediately jump into bed with Lord Adrik, in fact she was pretty naive about men and women although living on a farm had taught her the basics. Katherine appeared to be the stronger of the two, a determined young woman who wasn’t afraid to step outside the box. Adrik on the other hand was beset by guilt and indecision.

At first I didn’t think I’d like this book, but as I got more into it I found it had a ‘drawing in’ effect on me and I wanted to read on to find out how they solved the dilemma they found themselves in. Well worth reading to the end to find out how the mystery and confusion are resolved.
