In 1758 Britain, a blood curse imprisons soldier Garrick Lawson in the form of a marble statue as a sacrifice to bring prosperity to the Rushworth family. Fighting madness inside his stone prison, Garrick awaits a release that may never come. Over two centuries later, he hears a voice that makes him hunger for love as well as freedom.

Mara, the Rushworth heiress, feels irresistibly drawn to the statue. She dreams of hungry kisses in the arms of a soldier with eyes the color of melting chocolate. When Mara discovers an antique journal, revealing her family’s crime, she knows the man of her dreams awaits and she must risk the wrath of her devious uncle to free him. Using her blood, Mara brings Garrick to life and awakens his desire to claim her as his woman. But even as fiery passion burns between the lovers, the journal reveals that Garrick’s freedom has a price…Mara’s life.

What’s a girl to do when the man of her dreams is made of stone—literally—and the only way she knows how to give him life is through her own blood?

Yes, the title alone intrigued me. Sacrifice in Stone. How’d he end up a block of marble? Was he ever real? Why’d she fall in love with a statue? Now the idea of a girl and her statue isn’t original, but the way Ms. Mason writes it, it’s fresh.

Mara’s never really felt like she belonged. The one man she’s attracted to happens to be a statue. In some ways, the reader can identify with her struggle. It’s an interesting interpretation of longing.

But don’t think this story, though short, is simple. There are lots of plot twists that kept me firmly in my seat wanting to know what would happen next. Every time I thought I had this story figured out, MS. Mason took the story in another direction that was unexpected, but perfect.

I think my favorite part of the story was Garrick and his transition into modern society. What we might take for granted, he’s yet to learn. The scene with the crackers, peanut butter and hot sauce cracked me up. Where some authors might make it dirty, Ms. Mason makes it flirty and fun. I could almost see his scowl and loved every minute.

If you want a story with steamy sex, self discovery, and a tight plot, then you need to read Sacrifice in Stone. I give this story 4.5 cherries.
