As the book opens, we meet young runaway, Devlin Barre. She’s starving, dehydrated and has been beaten. She tries to take refuge in a store but passes out. One of the first responders to the scene is Jake McKenna. Jake makes an instant connection with Devlin and spends his off duty time at her bedside. As Devlin slowly recovers from her injuries and sexual assault, Jake learns that her family was killed in a road accident and that she’s been living with her aunt and uncle. And it’s her uncle who beat and raped her.
As Devlin gets stronger and more independent, she decides to leave town. A disappointed Jake knows he has to let her go. The two meet years later and when Devlin’s life is once again in danger, Jake is there for her once again.
It won’t take you long to fall in love with Jake. He’s everything women love in a hero. He’s tough, but yet shows his gentle side with Devlin. He’s caring, but yet still has his faults.
Devlin is also a likable character. Despite that she’s obviously very down on her luck when the book begins, she doesn’t wallow in self pity and you can see what Jake finds so appealing about her.
From early on in the book you start worrying about how these two are going to get together, especially when they say their goodbyes about a third of the way through the book.
Ms. Barrett does a great job of keeping you in suspense about whether these two characters will have a happy ending, especially after their time away from each other. She also did a first rate job with the dialogue which was very natural sounding. And her portrayal of supporting characters was well done too.
As any romantic suspense should be, you worry about both the outcome of their relationship and the mystery element.
If you’re looking for a book to sit down to read on a rainy afternoon, I’d recommend you give Anytime Darlin’ a try.
