She had dinner that evening with the children and Sally Wilkes, her employer conspicuously absent.

“Mr. Garrison had to go to New York unexpectedly, and his return has been delayed,” Sally explained.

On a Saturday? Did the man work seven days a week?

Curiosity made her wonder how often Eric Garrison actually made it home to have dinner with his family. As quickly as it came, she pushed the thought aside. It was neither her place, nor her desire, to question such things. “I’m sure it couldn’t be helped,” Haley responded.

“My daddy travels on a big plane a lot,” Brian told her. “I like planes. Do you like planes Miss Haley?”

“I’ve only been on one,” she admitted. “However, once we were off the ground, I found it quite nice.”

“You’ll get to fly a lot now that you’re our nanny,” Winnie added. “We go lots of places in the summer when school is out, and then skiing in the winter.”

She thought back about the clause in her employment contract regarding travel. The paragraph had read two or three trips per year, yet she’d not considered how the trips would come about. “Where will we go first do you think?” she asked.

“Paris actually.” Eric Garrison’s voice filled the room from where he stood in the doorway, his deep baritone sending a shiver up Haley’s spine.

“Paris?’ she repeated in question, turning in her chair to meet his gaze.

“My step-mother has an apartment there, and she’s invited us for the first week of summer vacation.”

Paris. The idea of going someplace so fabulous seemed as foreign as the French language to Haley. She made herself a mental note to purchase an English-to-French dictionary the next time she was in the city.

Eric had no sooner taken his seat at the dinner table when Tess appeared from the kitchen with additional serving bowls, as well as a bottle of wine and three glasses. Again, Haley was reminded of a totally different lifestyle from the one in which she’d been raised.

He poured them each a glass of wine, then raised his glass to inhale the bouquet. “Tell me, Miss Parker, do you speak French?”

Haley gave a slight shake of her head. “Unfortunately, not. My language elective during high school was Spanish. However, I’m a quick learner. If I can find some language books, I should be able to master the most important phrases in no time.”

“I’d be happy to teach you,” he offered. “Assuming I have enough available time before we leave.”

The thought of Eric Garrison teaching her French set Haley’s pulse racing. “I wouldn’t want to put you out. I’m sure I can learn on my own.”

“Comme vous le voulez.” When she met his gaze, he chuckled. “As you wish or, more literally, as you want it.”

A sudden dryness settled in her throat and she reached for her glass of water, taking one sip and then another.

“So, Doodlebug,” Eric asked, turning his attention and thoroughly mesmerizing gaze toward his daughter. “How was school today?”

How do you stop being a thief? Zizy assumed quitting her job, stealing from her boss, and flitting magically across the continent was one way to give it a go. Getting in and out of sticky situations is typically Zizy’s specialty. A little spellwork here, a pinch of deception there, and she’s home free. Quick-fingered, fast-talking, and charming the gnome knows traveling across a shattered continent won’t be easy. Still, she has the skills to keep herself from getting killed.

Too bad she was followed on her one-way trip. Pressed into a mission she can’t say no to, Zizy feels desperate, out of place, and as lonely as before. She’ll just hide her past, her present, and complicating info about herself. What could go wrong?

Zizy was taught growing up that expanding the Vault had been a request of the gnomes creator, the Trickster. The gnomes had built three glorious cities over the course of the last hundred or so years. Arovein, their original city, Zumi to the southwest along the coast, and Hadu on the northwest coast. All built in the tunnels and caverns of the Vault with small trading settlements above ground. But everything else after that had been gnome ingenuity. The waterworks pipeline, the spellwork-powered carts, the mechwork creatures—all made life grand for them. Enabled them to focus on their particular pursuits and research without worry for the busy motions of just living life.

She missed the clanking of metal as someone walked down the street testing out some new contraption. She missed her favorite tavern. Discussing over mugs of brewbeer what new idea a friend had thought up and watching—or sometimes being—the one who had agreed to be a tester. She missed being in charge of her daily life. Zizy let the pang of homesickness for Zumi and her old life wash over her.

What the minds of her people could come up with would be mesmerizing to a Brix. Simply astonishing. Or frightening, if they were ignorant sticks in the mud. She had encountered many like that since she entered their lands, those who saw her and understood she wasn’t like them. Some had been polite and ignored it when interacting with her. But others, scared beyond sense, had been more harmful and even attacked her unprovoked. So she’d tried to pass straight through, not standing out, with only mild altercations like yesterday’s.

But then there was Laysa. Something about this Brix was different, intriguing, and though Zizy had thought, as she drank in the inn the evening before, that the best way to avoid Emba’s bad side was just to do as she said, the spark of defiance she felt every time she saw Emba had reared its head. Her mind returned to Laysa off and on all night. The way she didn’t hesitate to ask and answer. The volley of words she seemed happy to spill. Zizy sensed she could talk for ages, and Zizy wasn’t unhappy, she mused, at the prospect of talking to her again. Around in circles Zizy went, drink after drink, until she just decided to do what she was best at: ignore all reasonable suggestions and do what she wanted anyway.

We have walked into another large cave. In one wall, a small chamber is cut.

“I bet there’s treasure in there. Arrgh,” like a pirate, then laughing hysterically, cackling, and releasing my hand. I kneel and see a pocket watch lying at the chamber’s entrance.

A hand, half bone, half decayed skin, creeps from the chamber, grabs my wrist. My heart catches. My eyes bulge. A scream rises in my throat.

Then, I see a bashed in skull emerge from the opening, its jaw set in a gaping grin and then another hand. Behind it on the floor, I see part of a skull, blood, a tooth, and hair. The skeleton crawls out of the chamber. I hear the girl’s crazed laughter. Bones skitter over the ground, click like castanets.

“Dean.” Its voice is thick like it’s filled with sand. I, we, feel like our head is going to explode into pieces of blood and brain and bone.

When I close my eyes, it grabs me and lifts me up, flopping me over its shoulder like an old rug. I can’t move, can’t talk, can’t breathe. The dry, brittle bones click against my skin.

It takes me to another part of the cave on the edge of a high cliff, lifts me off its shoulder, grabs my shirt, dangles me over the edge of the cliff, lets go.

I kick and scream as I fall through the air. I look up, see the face of a beautiful girl, then disappear into a pool of hot, frothy water. As I peer through the churning water, the skeleton’s hand grabs my hair.

I scream, choke on water, but then I’m gulping fresh air and staring into the Rose’s face.

“What the hell?”

“I’m naked,” I say aloud, though I’m only thinking it in my head.

“Next time, I’ll let your skinny ass drown.” She turns, leaves the bathroom.

My Process Writing This Book About Animal Communication by Shawndra McWhorter – Guest Post and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

My Process Writing This Book About Animal Communication

The process as I communicated with each of the animals in this book ended up being quite different from conversations I’ve had in the past. Normally, a human reaches out to me with a request or an issue to discuss—anything from helping a dog understand the process of flying to questions about how an animal feels about cancer treatments. In these instances, it’s normally a back-and-forth conversation, and I’m connected more with their physical selves. We’re addressing their likes and dislikes, their needs, their preferences, et cetera. The messages in this book, however, were really them talking and me transcribing. My process was to quiet my mind, ground myself, tune in to each animal, and then introduce myself and explain what I was doing. Actually, I didn’t have to do much explaining at all. They seemed to already know what I was looking for. It was more of a “download” from them than anything. For these conversations, I was connected to their higher selves, not the physical, as well. So it wasn’t about what their bodies wanted or needed but what their souls wanted us to know and understand. It was also less about their individual personalities and focused on a much deeper connection with us all. Once the animals in this book started talking, I was just writing down everything they said verbatim. So if you see questions, it’s the animal asking the questions. And yes, it was done using pen and paper. It may take longer, but doing so seems to provide a deeper connection than typing on a computer or making an audio recording. But that’s just what feels right for me. As I was writing their words, it was very clear to me.

What They Want Us To Know: Messages of Hope, Meaning and Unity From the Animal Kingdom.

Have you ever wondered what animals would tell us if they could? This book will give you that chance to find out! By being able to receive downloaded messages from wild and domestic animals, Shawndra translates their messages for us. These animals have shared powerful messages of unity, connection and purpose, and steps that each of us are able to take to deepen the connection, find more meaning in our lives, and become the humans that the animals know we can be. You’ll hear messages from 12 different animals on what they want us to know in order to live a more profoundly amazing life. You’ll be given the opportunity to learn ways to be more compassionate, tolerant and heart-centered, to the animals and to each other.

HIPPO WAS THE FIRST TO open the door to what I could be, something that has made me more connected to my higher self than I ever thought possible. After Dr. Jeri Ryan had helped me communicate with my dog Joey, I took her animal communication class and Hippo was the first one that I connected with telepathically. I can still vividly remember how I felt when I tuned in to Hippo. It felt completely different from speaking to a human or even daydreaming. I was connected to something outside myself that I didn’t even know was there but that felt instantly familiar. It felt more real and genuine than most of the conversations I’ve had with humans. It felt clear, honest, kind, and deeper than what I was used to with most humans. And it happened in a matter of minutes, not months or years of building trust. While Joey was the catalyst to bring me to this moment, Hippo was the one who I listened to for the first time and who opened my heart to more awareness of this new path.

I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company

I always loved this song, in the original not as a commercial for a certain drink!
The rest of the lyrics are beautiful too, and encompass perfectly my feelings in today’s world.

I try to use these morals (epithets) in my Sophella book where the world is a happy place for everyone and kindness is king. Where nature is bountiful in terms of the way we live and we are are recognizing our errors and trying to put things right. We are still taking baby steps but I am a dreamer and I believe in the future.

Ironically that comes up in my next book about time travellers. In this book we see the world in 2222 and we are in a good place. We are by then, as has been said many times before, one big melting pot – we don’t see people in terms of how they look as much as how they behave.

Genetic editing will eradicate disease and a world of equality and mutual respect will have been achieved. Of course I am a dreamer and this is a children’s book so there is much excitement and action with robots in a world where climate change has been solved but human nature will always be fallible.

In the meantime I hope you and your children will pick up the messages in Sophella’s Birthday Wish as well as enjoying the story.

Here is a modern fairy story about a little girl who has the gift to move between the fairy world and the human world. Her birthday wish comes true when she wishes to fly with the fairies, and so she is able to go on a magical journey with the fairies whilst using her human side to rescue animals and kids in a way that fairies cannot do. Throughout the journey she comes to realize her own strengths as she protects the penguins and rescues the dolphins with great bravery and compassion. During her heartwarming adventure. Sophella forms new friendships and demonstrates life-affirming lessons that can inspire us all.

“Make a wish, make a wish!” chanted Sophella’s friends. They were at Sophella’s 8th birthday party and her friends were all gathered round her birthday cake.

There were 8 fairies on her birthday cake. Each wore a dress of a different colour purple, blue, yellow, green, aqua, peach and red but Sophella’s favorite was the fairy in pink. Sophella took a deep breath and blew out all the candles then closed her eyes and made a wish. “I wish I could fly like the fairies!”

About the Author:Maggi was born and grew up in the UK and later moved to Canada with her husband and sons. Inspired by her grandkids, she started writing stories for and about them and is currently working on her next Sophella book, and a book aimed at a slightly older readership about time travellers.

“You want to talk about Hannah?”

“Where is she?”

“Sleeping in.”

“Are you going to tell her?”

“No.”

“Mom, come on. That’s not fair to her. She has a right to know.”

“Why are you butting in? We’ve had this conversation before.”

“Not like this. And that was a few years ago. It’s time to tell her.”

“What would you like me to tell her? I adopted you when you weren’t even two. I have no real history on you.” She looked down at the table, rubbing her thumb up and down the side of the mug. “I think you were in the same shitty system that I was as a kid. I don’t know where your mother is, just like I don’t know where mine is. You came to me with a birth certificate that said your mother was Mary Smith. Could you get a more common name?”

Her eyes lifted and her gaze bore into Shyla as she continued. “You were born at home by a midwife. The midwife is dead and after searching four hundred and fifty Mary Smiths, I have no idea who birthed you.” She gave her that look of I’ve tried to do something, but I’ve found nothing. “I can’t do that to her.”

Shyla frowned as she thought about what she’d just been told. Most of it she’d never heard before. “That sounds fishy. I mean about Mary Smith.” What she really wanted to say was why have you never told me or Kal, any of this before?

Lessons I Learned from my Villain by Michael Ross – Guest Blog and Giveaeway

Lessons I Learned from my Villain

As the first story in my anthology, “A Nice Easy Steal”, evolved I found myself more and more judgemental about my main character.

It was one of those stories with no pre planning, just a vague idea about a likeable rogue going about his day to day business. He was modelled on quite a few characters I had met during my business life; people living on the edge, fairly decent humans overall but always willing to push open the envelope a bit further than they should. People who had done me no harm, but people I would rather keep at arm’s length.

So in the story, by a stroke of good fortune, he comes across a once in a lifetime opportunity and within the context of the story no-one got hurt, no-one lost out; just a bit of good luck that came his way and he took advantage. I typed ‘The End,’ and got on with other bits and pieces. However, over the months it niggled away at me and I felt a guilt for letting get away with ‘one.’ I started thinking about him and the more I thought the more I disliked him – taking advantage of a poor old lady and her family. What was I thinking? He needed to be taught a lesson; so I tried to imagine a different outcome, a way for him to get his due rewards. When I realised the truth behind the story; that he was not as bright as he thought, I had to go back and play around very slightly with some of the previous scenes. But in the end I got him and taught him a lesson he will never forget.

Why can time consumed reliving memories provide enough motivation to carry on? Why keep a diary if you don’t want people to read it? Why let prejudice cloud your judgement? Why do the most simple of smells bring memories back to life? Why is it possible to believe the impossible? What does it feel like to take another person’s life? Will the good deeds we do come back to us in different forms?

These are of some of the questions posed in this imaginative collection of short stories involving, amongst others; a private detective with super powers, a loveable car salesman, a dour public health inspector, a vicar’s daughter with a dark secret, a sculptor with a destructive obsession, a young man with a passion for language, a reluctant public executioner, two sisters whose petty disputes hide something deeper, a job hunter with an unusual skill.

There are so many diverse characters and in this intriguing and imaginative collection of stories everyone has a tale to tell.

A collection of stories that will surely leave its mark on the reader.

From my window, I spot my fellow students grouped in excited conversation, circling around, probing each other with thoughts and words, questions and answers. After two years, we know each other well. I know they all wish they could play the violin as well as me, and in my turn, I wish I could be as happy as them. I wind down by running through scales for twenty minutes, and then I hear the old grandfather clock in the hall strike eleven—my other life beckons.

In Chinatown, it is easy to find a restaurant where you can spend £100 a head on a meal. At my parent’s place, six people can eat like kings for less money.

The walk from the rehearsal rooms takes the best part of an hour. I cast aside my musical mantle as I walk, so that by the time I reach Uncle Wong’s, I am prepared for my twice-weekly four-hour shift. This is the only payment my father and mother have ever asked of me. It is nothing.

Two years ago, my parents ushered me into the tiny lounge area above their restaurant, and wordlessly, my mother passed me my gift. My eyes moved to my father and then back to my mother. I could not speak. It was beautiful. Feeling its dark ebony grain, I turned it tentatively through my fingers, tilting, and twisting—gazing, unsure of my breath.

“Baba. Mamma. It’s beautiful, but you cannot afford it.”

“Shush, my son.” The look on my mother’s face said that my joy was all they required.

My interest in English literature flourished and I have since won several prizes for my short stories. My first book, ‘Twenty Short Stories – Settling a score,” reached No 1 in the Short Stories Best Sellers and is still available, as is “Twenty-One (more) Short Stories,” and “Another Twenty-Two Short Stories.”

What Would I Tell a New Author? by Janice Tremayne – Guest Blog and Giveaway

What Would I Tell a New Author?

When I first started writing my first book, I didn’t know anything. I thought if I completed a writing course, wrote a good story with an exciting plot, I would be on my way to writing success. Because everyone is just waiting for the release of your book. Right? Until reality set in. Seven books later, I realized how naïve I was, and I learned some hard lessons along the way. So, If I went back in time, what would I do differently?

No matter how educated you are and a literary expert you claim to be, if the premise of your story does not connect immediately with the reader, you’re going to struggle to sell books. That one sentence that describes the storyline is the emotional attachment the reader will have to your precious work—the wow factor. If your writing is stilted with terrible dialogue and your character development is insufficient—you’re going to get negative feedback and question yourself as a writer. And believe me, there are horrible reviewers out there that will have no problem giving you a one-star result—some of them get a kick out of it!

This is what I learned in no particular order:

1. You need a great book cover to connect with your genre and your reader, and this is not an activity where you should save money.

2. You need a good editor to clean up your work. Hopefully, you can establish a good relationship so they can understand you and your writing objectives.

3. Develop an author mailing list of fans that are interested in your work straight away. You will learn that they are your number one marketing initiative.

4. Don’t spend too much money on marketing your first book. Wait until you have written at least your third book before you start spending more significant amounts on promoting.

5. Complete a book marketing course like Mark Dawson’s Self-Publishing 101. You need these tools to assist you in growing your brand and build your audience if you are an indie author.

6. Don’t quit your day job unless you are financially secure.

7. Keep persevering with your writing style and set a routine. You will get better with each book as your writing style becomes more polished and engaging—it’s an evolution.

8. Decide what you will be—an indie author with complete control of the process or a traditional author seeking a literary agent. They are two different frames of mind and thinking. You need to understand where you want to be.

9. Don’t believe all the hype you hear. You need to become good at sifting through all the noise and pluck out the relevant aspects for your publishing career.

Of all the actions I mentioned above, I wish I developed a process for collecting reader emails for my mailing list as soon as I launched my first book. I wasted money on marketing with no offer to my readers—no follow book in the series—wasted opportunities to collate hundreds of reader email addresses. It was one big mistake after another as I continually squandered opportunities.

Accept you’re learning about yourself too. It wasn’t until the second book that I started to understand which genre I really wanted to write. It was the process of trial and error about understanding myself better. I can assure you that if you’re not passionate about the genre you write, it will show in your literary work. Readers can be very astute.

I hope this doesn’t sound too dreary because I want to help you avoid the pitfalls that I went through. And one important thing—writing gives you something other professions don’t. When I returned home after a hard day’s work in the office, nobody cared, and I never received any gratitude. It was a grinding corporate environment full of people only looking after themselves. But when I started writing and receiving emails from fans worldwide on how much they liked my writing, I was overjoyed. Did I have that much of an impact on this person’s life that they felt compelled to write me an email? In all my years of corporate life, nobody ever sent me such a note. And not because I was terrible at my job—far from it. It was just the culture. That’s the beauty of writing—because if you do it well, you touch people’s hearts and emotions.

Bolder handed him the book of prayers and marked out the section containing the love of worship. “We plan to compel the negative energy to leave her body and direct it to another place—to cross over to the other side. We are lightworkers, remember? Not exorcists.”

“I can at least bless her with holy ointment … can’t I?”

Bolder nodded and said, “Well, why don’t you start with that first?”

Father Brennan walked toward Kelly as the old rustic timber floors creaked underneath. He opened his small container with holy ointment and brushed his index finger across it. Then he gently marked her forehead with the sign of the cross.

“In the name of the father, and the son, and the holy spirit … amen.”

Kelly jolted as though something had bitten her and her body trembled for a few seconds. She was still sleeping but aware of what was going on around her.

“What was that?” said Bolder.

“What was what?”

“You mean you didn’t see it? The dark shadow that was standing beside her.”

“I didn’t see it … but I felt something gripping my hand.” Father Brennan was perplexed.

An ominous image of a woman in a faint white dress glided across the bed—motionless and stoic but holding her stomach with both hands in hurtful prose. Within seconds it was gone with barely enough time for Bolder to capture a glimpse of it.

“I sense something else in the room,” Bolder said.

A pulsating wave of energy screeched from within, penetrating the bodies of Father Brennan and Bolder. They shook from the sensation—there was no movement or breeze, and the windows to Kelly’s room shut. But it still required they hold their balance as the snappy spiritedness vibrated their eardrums with a ringing noise.

“Whatever is in here is not going to give up with prayers of love,” said Father Brennan. He was ready to launch into a full-blown exorcism.

An endearingly irreverent love story.

To Jackie Ryan, insults are foreplay and love is war. What the feisty redhead lacks in stature, she makes up in attitude. She’s made more than one grown man cry and she’s damn proud of it. Little does the rowdy barista know she’s about to meet her match in the shape of a walking, talking pair of starched khakis.

When unassuming Eddie Jaworski stumbles into a quirky coffee shop, he isn’t expecting a battle of wits with the maniac behind the counter. Still, he can’t help be intrigued by the endearingly irreverent human enigma. She’s brash, but considerate. Closed off to most, but fiercely loyal to a few. Everything is a joke, except those things that are sacred. Jackie doesn’t trust easily and if he wants to get close, he’s going to have to work for every inch. Good thing he’s up for the challenge.

But Eddie has a secret—one he didn’t mean to keep—that’s going to tug at the delicate strings weaving the pair together. When everything begins to unravel, Jackie must decide just what she’s willing to risk for love.

“I’m here for the irresistible asylum-esque ambiance.”

“Oh, fuck off.” She leans back and flips me off with both hands for good measure.

“See? Don’t get that at Starbucks.” She shakes her head and bites her lip to stifle a laugh. I shift on the bench, finding myself leaning in closer to her. “I met your Pops.”

“I heard.” She leans forward across the table, her chin nearly resting on the screen of my laptop. “Sounds like there was some confusion…” Her voice goes soft and sensuous. “So, do you or don’t you have a cock piercing?”

“Jesus Christ!” I pinch the bridge of my nose and squeeze my eyes shut.

“You showed it to JC?” She gasps and yells across the cafe, “Hey, JC, is it Prince Albert or a Jacob’s Ladder?”

“No, that’s not—” I try to off-ramp this colossal miscommunication.

“Prince Albert,” Jesús shouts back with a wink.

Red lifts out of her chair to peek at my lap, as if she’s going to be able to see the non-existent piercing through my pants.

“Shame. I always wondered what a Jacob’s Ladder would feel like,” she replies loud enough that Jesús can hear her behind the counter, but her eyes are locked on mine. They are a mesmerizing soft hazel with a mischievous glint. My heart pounds in my chest and my mouth goes dry.

“It’s all about how they use it,” Jesús answers, shouting over the hiss of steaming milk.

“Ain’t that the truth.” Red wiggles her eyebrows at me.

“I don’t have a dick piercing!” I shout over the both of them.

About the Author: Amelia Kingston is a California girl, writer, traveler, wife and dog mom. She survives on chocolate, coffee, wine, and sarcasm. Not necessarily in that order. She’s been blessed with a patient husband who’s embraced her nomad ways and cursed with an impatient (although admittedly adorable) terrier who pouts when her dinner is five minutes late.

She loves to write about strong, stubborn, flawed women and the men who can’t help but love them. Her irreverent books aim to be silly and fun with the occasional storm cloud to remind us to appreciate the sunny days. As a hopeless romantic, her favorite stories are the ones that remind us all that while love is rarely perfect, it’s always worth chasing.

Time is ticking on this second chance at romance…

With a recent promotion and loads of confidence, Chloe Stevens has landed in sunny LA as a sales director for a leasing company. Quickly picking up on successful business strategies, Chloe also zeros in on a challenging romance option, Zane Shepard, an LA city planner. Chloe and Zane quickly discover an intriguing lust/love attraction, eventually transforming it into the perfect relationship.

After a year, Chloe is ready to take the next step, cohabitation, but instead, Zane blindsides her with the unexpected news of a breakup.

After months of sleepless nights doubting herself, Chloe decides their breakup stemmed from the issue of bad timing; she was ready to commit and he wasn’t. Armed with her theory of choosing future relationships based on matching timelines, Chloe packs up her damaged heart and moves home to Dallas. She quickly lassos a new love interest, Trey Morgan; a boyfriend with good timing who’s ready to take the plunge.

Twenty years later, Chloe’s world unravels when she discovers her marriage to Trey is riddled with infidelity and lies. Taking on a new job, she’s forced to confront her past and rebuild the confidence she had in spades when she was younger. Unexpectedly, she has a chance to take a second stab at romance, but finds her good timing mantra severely tested.

“Coupling up, making that long-term commitment. Everyone says it’s all about that one-in-a-million someone, fate and a chance meeting, that special sparkle in the eyes. Bullshit. I say it’s all about timing. A couple can be absolutely smitten, madly in love, devoted initially, but if the timing’s not right, forget about it.”

I was explaining my theory to Mimi, a bored co-worker, and she wasn’t buying it. Perhaps I was sounding a little too passionate. After all, it was only lunch, with no liquor involved. I’d taken her out for sushi and as Mimi looked around at the lunch crowd, she sipped her water and decided to engage.

“OK, Chloe, so you’re saying all these co-habitating couples right here, are not or weren’t necessarily in love when they committed. It was only a matter of good timing for all of them; chemistry had nothing to do with it? People are only settling because they’re in the right spot at the right time.”

“Bingo; exactly. I’m not saying one hundred percent have settled. A few got lucky right off the bat with the right-place, right-time thing, but yeah, a whole heck of a lot of people are married to a person because someone wandered by, caught their eye, and lassoed them in when they were ready to say yes.”

Three months of sleepless nights, tangled in sheets, with my mind running in circles ruminating on what had gone wrong, had led me to the conclusion of lousy timing.

About the Author:I’m a Texas girl: grew up in San Antonio, went to school at UT in Austin, and settled in Dallas where I raised a husband, two kids and a few cats. My husband and cats will probably disagree on who raised who, but I’m a sucker for a robust discussion.

For years I’ve been involved in retail management, but have also really enjoyed writing, taking deep dives into the lives of my characters. When you can pry my fingers off the keyboard, I’ve been known to imbibe in a few glasses of wine and have been spotted forking into some decadent desserts while gathering with friends and family. I enjoy shopping, usually on the hunt for apparel with a weakness for shoes, and will frequently jump at the opportunity taking an unexpected trip to a far-away place.

In addition, there’s always time for reading. I keep a stack of novels ready and waiting on my night stand, with a few tapping their toe in my Kindle as well. I bounce around genres, snoop around the best-seller lists, and on the ready for a good recommendation.
