3 Self-Care Tips for Writers

As a writer, self-care is just as important as improving your craft. Here, I list three essential tips for taking care of yourself while on your writing journey.

Don’t Compare

Someone might be an award-winning author with a large fanbase. Another might be writing their seventh novel. A different writer could have just sold their first screenplay.

None of these writers have anything to do with you.

Their success does not take away from your future success. In fact, every time a writer wins, they show what’s possible for you, too. There’s no need to compare your journey to others since they are on a different path. Trust the divine timing of your life.

Move Your Body

As writers, we sit around a lot. We sit at our desks. We sit in cafes. We sit whenever we are ready to write.

That’s a lot of sitting, isn’t it?

While exercise takes us away from our work, it will help us become better in the long run. Don’t skip it!

Healthy body + healthy mind = better writing.

Focus On the Craft

It’s not about you. The faster you realize this, the faster you can take the ego out of the process and concentrate on perfecting your craft. Get curious about how good you can get at writing and then put in the work. With a focus on mastering the craft instead of questioning if you’re good enough, you’ll naturally advance over time.

I hope these tips help you improve and enjoy the writing process a bit more.

Arlo read a large sign passing by on the boulevard.

KILL ALL BOTS!

“What the hell is Razor doing?”

“She’ll be fine. She does it all the time.”

“Does what all the time? Never mind. Don’t tell me. We have to stop her.”

Zen crossed her legs, tapped the console with long, golden nails and stared past the protest.

“You stop her.”

He watched Razor lift a helmet off the ground and put it on, pumping her fist as she walked into the chanting crowd.

“I can’t be in a protest, Zen. I have a career to protect.”

“Sounds inconvenient.”

“Don’t we have somewhere to be?”

“And we’ll get there.”

“This is ridiculous,” he said, stepping out of the pod. He tried to spot her. Nothing but angry strangers. Walking towards the crowd, he felt the electric energy of frustration.

“PEOPLE OVER BOTS! PEOPLE OVER BOTS!”

He stood at the edge of the moving spectacle and scanned for Razor.

Against the grain of the crowd, he spotted the oversized biker’s helmet with flowing blonde locks extending beyond the edges. She grabbed a bat off the ground near a closed psychedelics store.

“Razor, no!” he yelled, his voice drowned by the raging chorus.

Things I Would Tell a New Author

There is a common question that I get from those who want to write a book but have yet to commit. “I want to write a book. Where do I start?”

The first thing I tell a wannabe author, or even a new author feeling the waters, is meet other authors. Get to know those who are likeminded and share the same passion. I don’t mean that if you write fantasy, you should only converse with those who write fantasy, on the contrary, mix it up.

Authors have a kinship that is easily shared. Most authors I know want to share their journey with anyone who is forging their own path. And every journey is different. Some authors have million-dollar publishing contracts on their first book ever. Other authors will pen one hundred books and make pennies. The point is, each author is passionate about their storytelling process, and they will share that with you.

Where do you meet these likeminded people? Writing groups are phenomenal for this kind of networking. They have local and national groups from every kind of genre, for fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting, you name it. Check out a local chapter. Go to a conference. Meet an author at a book signing and see who they’re affiliated with. Take a class from an author. The possibilities are endless.

Whether you have written an entire series or have yet to put a word down on paper, feeding that passion with people who understand your thought process and your dreams in invaluable.

My next piece of advice for a new author would be to write. I know it sounds like that would be a normal step, but authors sometimes like to get in their heads too much. You can spend years plotting out a book, or making character sheets and spreadsheets to follow. Sometimes, authors know every aspect of the book so well they’re living and breathing the details, but they’ve yet to get the whole story down.

Write that book. Write it from start to finish. It’s going to suck—that’s called a first draft. You’re going to massage it and make it better, that’s called editing and revising. So don’t be fearful of the words you’re putting down, just get them out of you. And when you go to a conference and you’re sitting with seasoned authors, they will commiserate with you. Because they too had to go through that same process to get their first book down on paper too.

Enjoy the process!

Saying goodbye is sometimes the beginning.

Craig Turner was Coach Diaz’s star player, back in the day. He was held in high regard, until he broke the rules and dated the coach’s daughter. Young and stupid, his affection for her lasted until graduation, and then it was time to face the real world–but his love for her would never leave him.

Rachel Diaz became who her father wanted her to be, a well educated, well traveled, successful woman, but she holds a well full of secrets from the outside world. As a high school therapist, she uses her past traumas to help others overcome their own.

When the Fabulous Five arrive at Coach Diaz’s funeral, to pay their respects, a rekindling happens between them all—and between Craig and Rachel.

Is Rachel woman enough to face her demons and is Craig man enough to accept them? Or will their encounter be as brief as the affair they had a decade ago, behind her father’s back?

“Dr. Olivia Chasen,” Santa’s jolly baritone popped her mental fuzzy bubble.

She stopped as she struggled to whirl around. “Me?” She touched her chest with a dramatic flourish she didn’t know she possessed.

A powerful spotlight illuminated her; its heat burned her already flushed face.

She pressed a clammy palm to her chest. “How do you know my name?” The haze in her mind was paralyzing all cognitive function.

“My dear girl,” Santa chuckled, “you should know by now that Santa knows everything and everyone,” he tapped an index finger to his temple.

Santa Claus turned to address the waiting line. “Girls, Boys, Moms, Dads, everyone, if you don’t mind waiting for a brief moment, I’d like for Olivia,” he pointed a white gloved finger at her, “to please come up here on stage, and tell me what she wants for Christmas.”

She stood dumbfounded as the audience and the people in line clapped and chanted her name, “Olivia! Olivia! Olivia!”

Oh no! What was she going to do? She couldn’t possibly go up onto that stage. She was far too shy to address a theater full of people.

But if she didn’t go that would be so unexciting and so like the old Olivia.

But she wasn’t unexciting! She was the new Olivia, and she was exciting! And she wanted to have fun! Correction: She was determined to have fun. Besides, she’d never see these people—her fellow passengers—ever again.

For thousands of years, stars have held our attention and imagination. They influence our life—we wish upon them, sing songs about them, navigate by them, write about them, follow them, and even give their name to the actors we love. My memories have revealed a lifetime of navigating by the stars, and moving beyond the fear and anxiety that self-doubt so insidiously cloaks us in. Yes, as Jiminy Cricket sang for us in Walt Disney’s Pinocchio, “when you wish upon a star . . . fate steps in and sees you through.”

Memories and influences have a profound effect on our lives. I look back on my childhood years—the 1940s to mid-’50s—and I can recall the people who were inspirational to me. Mostly it was my family, but there was also Jiminy Cricket. You no doubt recollect the song “When You Wish Upon a Star,” with its lyrics that lift the spirit and let you believe anything is possible. I didn’t doubt Jiminy for a minute.

The early years of my life were a time of innocence, security, adventure, and family love. How quickly my situation changed—one decision by my parents, made with my best interests foremost in their thoughts, shattered the world I had known. Through the fear, torment, isolation, and loss of my own identity, my memories and influences would come to have an overwhelming power on the choices I was to make.

My transition from teenager to adult seemed to happen overnight, but my unflappable outward appearance belied the struggles of a boy coming to terms with his guilt, and an irresistible need for his parents to be proud of him. My future was being shaped from the past, but it took me a long time to realise it. I chose the road less travelled, steeped in the wonder of the cinema and accompanied by my beloved animal companions, and it has been intriguing, daunting, rewarding, and, at times, solitary, but I always felt it was the path I was meant to take.

Like so many people, I let the emotions attached to memories hold me captive, and I missed opportunities to choose with more clarity. A near-death experience helped me to live a simpler life. Participating in a creative writing course inspired me to engage in script writing, stage work, and novel writing. This is my third book, an autobiography that has revealed more of me than I ever intended to share, and fate has led you to it.

Skylarking was associated with everything we did, like when we switched townspeople’s garbage bins from one street to another. It was a less wasteful era— bottles were refundable and goods weren’t excessively wrapped like nowadays, so bins back then were about a third of the size of today’s Sulo bins and were made of tin and varied in shape, size and quality. For quite a while, victims searching for their garbage cans were not impressed with Apexians.

During my time with the club, members constructed the town’s first caravan park, erected almost a kilometre of cyclone-wire fencing around the cemetery, and produced the inaugural Peaches ’n’ Cream festival that became a regular two-yearly event.

The only fly in the ointment was often being the odd man out when drinking at the bar with Apexians. They all had history of things they’d done together while I had none I could mention. In some ways, I felt I was being left out, like as a child when my siblings did stuff I wasn’t allowed to because I was too young. Age wasn’t the problem but my past was: my college experience and sexual orientation were forbidden territory to mention. Being gay in a small country town meant any dalliances needed to be cloak and dagger and certainly not in Cobram—the gossip would have been inescapable. It was a heavy burden to bear; any slip-ups would have had catastrophic consequences so I was constantly on my guard.

I dated girls, making sure outings were with other couples so we didn’t go past the petting stage. It kept up a respectful image but I was never comfortable with it. One of our excursions was to a Melbourne drive-in theatre for a midnight advance screening of a remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s State Fair, an event Fox had given me a free car pass to. I made sure there was no chance of hanky-panky by packing the car with two other Apexians and their girlfriends. The film was an abomination, Jose Ferrier’s directorship ruining the fun and joy of the original, but we didn’t care, the novelty of the trip to a drive-in theatre in the Big Smoke was everything.

About the Author:David Scott is a playwright, director and novelist – among other things. His career included forty years as a film exhibitor; establishing a horse stud; managing a motel; working in the hospitality industry, and a few other experiences along the way. David’s latest book, Stargazer, is an autobiography highlighting the value of family, ingenuity, bravado, old-fashioned common sense, colourful characters and unfailing good humour. From rural towns in Victoria and New South Wales, to the mountain life in Queensland, the constant has been faithful canine companions, perseverance and a joy for living.

Jake had drifted to Japan without any serious intent, and it was going… okay. He had made friends in the local Salsa community, his Japanese was improving, but for Jake the familiar feeling that had dogged him most of his life—that something special should be happening—had struck again.

Kenneth had been assigned to Japan by the pixie queen years ago, which is just enough time for a pixie to get bored and complacent while keeping tabs on the local talent. Most humans had no magic, and most magical humans didn’t know it was their power that made their food taste better, their paintings more vibrant, or people like them more.

When the two met, the spark in Jake gave Kenneth’s role a new urgency. Jake didn’t just have magic, he had a wild and unpredictable kind seen only once in a generation. How could Kenneth keep Jake’s magic from falling into enemy hands? Kill him? Recruit him? Somehow keep him ignorant?

Jake’s magic had quietly led him to Japan, subtly influencing every choice in his life. That something special Jake had been waiting for was about to happen, ensuring his and Kenneth’s lives would never be boring again.

Jake stood up and walked into his shower room to get ready for a night of dancing. It was only recently that the separation of his toilet and shower didn’t make him uncomfortable. To someone else, it might have been strange that he felt pride from having gotten used to such a minor aspect of his life in Japan, but it was part of his life that he had to deal with daily. Every small comfort mattered when adjusting to a new country, as Jake had quickly found out. Things were different than visiting on vacation. It had already been a few months since he had moved to Japan on a student visa. The five-day-a-week Japanese course he was taking filled up his mornings and some of his afternoons. Jake once again wondered why he had signed up for morning classes when he hated waking up early. Thankfully, he had studied Japanese before coming. He couldn’t imagine being as lost as some of the people he met during class. The thought made him shudder as he started the water.

About the Author:

Rasta Musick spent the first 12 years of his life in California before moving to Japan with his family. After graduating from college with a Bachelor’s in economics at the age of 16, he spent the years after learning Japanese and working. Having spent more than half his life in Japan, he’s confident that it’s his home.

With many different hobbies, chief of them being Latin dance, he keeps himself physically active as well as mentally active as much as he can. The Latin dance community in Japan is alive and, surprisingly, quite large.

Rasta has lupus and hereditary coproporphyria. Given their complicated nature, he’s had to learn a lot to adapt and manage them. The process also taught him a lot about managing other aspects of his life, and all of this influences his writing.

Ideal Writing Space by Gloria J. Goldsmith – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. A randomly drawn winner will be awarded a $50 Amazon/BN GC. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Ideal Writing Space

The ideal writing space is a desk with lots of drawers and the space for a keyboard, mouse, and room to write on a sheet of paper. There needs to be a shelf where the screen sits preferably eight inches high. Lots of table space left and right for all the “extras” required, like a holder for pens, pencils, highlighter, magnifying glass, and scissors.

The usual things have to be available in the desk drawers, rubber bands, stapler, staple remover, correction tape, scotch tape, glue stick, cell phone recharging cord, and batteries for the mouse.

The desk must be located near an electrical outlet because a power strip is essential for all the numerous computer equipment, desk lamp, and recharge your cell.

On the wall behind is a large bookcase filled with books, books, and more books. Proudly displayed are my own!

And somewhere to the side is a footstool with a pillow on it for a cat to sit on. It needs to be near me so that when I have petted the cat for 3 minutes or so and want to return to work, they can be gracefully encouraged to jump onto a cushy lil sleep place.

And, of course, a great desk chair that swivels, leans back and never descends, leaving your knees in your face.

That is ideal. That is not what I have. I am missing the writing space, and enough drawers, the bookshelves, and as you can guess, my chair pneumatics has a bad seal and stays up sometimes and sometimes not. My writing space is cramped and cluttered, but although it is not perfect, I seem to get a lot of creative work completed. Perfection will never write the next book for me.

I was DONE! I ditched graduation, dumped my repressed college boyfriend, and dropped my sexual insecurities for a wild ride with Destiny. Unpredictable Fate beckoned with a European adventure!

In a chance encounter, I met Jean Louis. From the instant we met, the dashing young Frenchman soothed my bruised heart, rejuvenated my spirit, and convinced me that leaving my old life was no mistake. Together, we set out to explore southern France.

Jean Louis was torn from my life almost as quickly as he had entered it, yet leaving the haunting memory of his caress permeating my every thought. Driven by love and passion, I journeyed to find my lover, even if it meant scouring all the hidden corners of France.

Would I ever reunite with the man I believe to be my one true soulmate? Would I ever hear him say he feels the same for me as I do him? What twist of Fate will it take for me to find him?

There was only one window in the room, which had no screen. To keep out the bugs, we closed the shutter, which still allowed some air inside. That evening, I slept on the couch, right below the window, and the guys lay on the cement floor. The males had no blankets or sleeping bags, but at least they were out of the rain.

Some hours into the night, I was dreaming of Luke. Luke, who loved to tease me by fondling me when I was asleep, by touching my cheek or blowing a strand of hair or slowly stroking my hand. I smiled and wiggled my fingers, and he responded. It was so lovely to feel his antics. I missed his night tricks. His hand was trailing up my arm, and soft lips kissed my palm. Luke. So romantic. Always waking me with kisses.

I let out a sigh, slowly drifting my eyes open. It seemed it had been forever since Luke had brushed my cheek or held me close. I longed for his warmth.

The room was so dark, I couldn’t see a thing. I wasn’t on the waterbed. My heart pounded with alarm. Where am I? My arm was hanging over the side of a couch. Where the hell am I? It was pitch-black.

The fingers tickled a bit more with a kiss on my arm, then came a whisper. Was I dreaming? Or awake? The whisper came again.

I whispered back, “What?” I felt the side of the bed depress. The murmuring voice was now by my face.

“J’ai froid.”

“Luke?”

“Oui. J’ai froid.”

This wasn’t Luke. Not my Luke. A bolt of recognition struck me hard as I comprehended. I didn’t recall his name, it did sound something like Luke, and it was the French guy Marc had brought in from the rain.

My high school French was twisting my brain cells to recall…J’ai means I am, right is droite, left is gauche…and a left faucet is chaud, which means hot, and right is froid—COLD. He is cold!

I patted the couch, and he squeezed onto the settee with me. He cuddled his arms around me, kissed my cheek, and we returned to slumber.

All three of us woke as the morning sunlight pierced the slits of the shutter. They bounced off the wall and into the room. We had some tea before the two men left. Around dinner time, Jean Louis returned alone, with sandwiches and chocolates. I had unknowingly passed another sex attraction test.

Constrained by the lack of English language skills, Jean Louis spoke very few words. I am an excellent mimic, but my French language skills were limited.

After dinner, sipping our tea, Jean Louis turned to me.

“I wants stay wis you.” I wasn’t sure exactly what that meant. For the evening? Sleep on the floor? Sleep with me?

“En bas?” I tapped the floor with my foot.

“Si je dois. Je préfère avec toi.”

I wasn’t sure about all the words, but the last two, avec toi, meant “with you.”

About the Author:As a Special Education teacher, I became fascinated by the English language. I still marvel at how it changes and expands over time. My most pleasurable teaching moments were showing children how a wondrous story can take their imaginations to other times, places, even other worlds. When the pandemic began, I started my first foray into publishing⸺ a nonfiction book, The Sensible Parent’s Little Homeschooler Handbook.

My secret pleasure-writing has always been focused on romance. French Kiss is a Contemporary Romance based on a fictionalized version of experiences during eighteen months of living and working abroad before the formation of the European Union.

Next year, my first Historical Regency Romance That Wylde Woman will be published. It has allowed me to indulge my curiosity and enthusiasm for history by incorporating in the storyline a historical geologic event which affected weather and farming and even how England’s war with Napoleon impacted clothing styles.

Ten Bookish/Writing-Related Things You Might Not Know About Polly Harris – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Polly Harris will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

I write every week on my newsletter about tons of resources, tips, and ideas for writing, editing, and publishing. (You can sign up here if that interests you.)

So, for this guest blot post, I thought I’d list 10 bookish/writing-related things that most people don’t know about me. ?

1. While you might know me as a contemporary/thriller writer, I actually started out in science fiction! My very first published book was about an alien, lol!

2. While writing is my first love, I make my full time living as a fiction editor!

3. Probably because I work in fiction all day, in my free time, I tend to read nonfiction. Some of my favorite topics are science, psychology, and self-help. (I do still read some fiction for fun though.)

4. I’ve written science fiction, fantasy, contemporary, thriller, and romance. But I don’t want to stop there! I’d love to branch out into genres like horror and even nonfiction!

5. I don’t write every day. I know, I know, I’ve broken the golden rule of all writers! But in reality, I do so much better when I sit down and power through a project. Most of my books have been written within a span of three to six weeks. And then I take a TON of time off writing while I edit and just take a break.

6. I’ve been both self-published and traditionally published. And I think there are pros and cons of each! They are definitely both valid ways to go and truly depend on the author and their book.

7. I’ve completed NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) four times, and plan on doing it again this November!

8. I’ve written thirteen books! Not all of them are published though (probably for the best, lol!).

9. My cat, Leonard, is listed as my official editorial assistant on my website. He does a great job, thank you very much.

10. And finally, I wrote my very first story at the age of six by dictating it to my mother, who was kind enough to type it out for me on the computer and print it. I still have it to this day, on my bookshelf. It was about a cat.

DATING IS TOUGH. ESPECIALLY IF THE GUY YOU LIKE MIGHT BE A SERIAL KILLER.

After a devastating heartbreak and a string of short-lived, failed relationships, college student Georgie Itoyama has now decided to approach dating in the same way that she approaches everything else: methodically, logically, and efficiently.

Georgie downloads countless dating apps, determined to find the love of her life as easily as she orders jeans online. And while her love-at-first-sight aspirations don’t exactly come true, she does find someone she likes. Quite a lot.

There’s only one problem. Girls are going missing at Georgie’s university, and all the signs are pointing to . . . him?

But that’s ridiculous. What are the chances that she’s dating an actual serial killer?

Then she matches with Nate. Mysterious, intelligent, and oddly fixated on solving the local disappearances. As Georgie’s relationships deepen with each of her guys, she unwittingly finds herself caught up in the mess that is murder, intrigue, and the nightmare of online dating.

We turn the corner and I think it’s Amelia who notices her first. What I notice is the smell. Iron. Thick and palpable. And then decay. I never knew bodies could smell so quickly. I always assumed it would take days. Apparently, it’s only a few hours.

Amelia screams and it reverberates through the stairwell like a siren.

I don’t say anything, I don’t move. I’m frozen on the steps like someone is physically holding me there, unable to take my eyes off the girl at the bottom of the stairwell. Bent in a shape that no one’s supposed to bend in, her eyes open. But that makes it worse. Because if they were closed, maybe she could be sleeping—unconscious.

Three mind-numbing seconds pass, and then a thought flits through my head.

Whitney. Her name was Whitney.

About the Author: Polly Harris is the author of six YA novels and runs her own editorial company where she works on books just like this one. When Polly isn’t writing or editing, she can be found cuddling her cat (professionally known as her editorial assistant), crafting, or swiping through dating apps.

I was alone.

I sat in a ring of light in an empty room. The walls oozed blackness, like fresh asphalt. Cold prickles ran up my arms and legs, and then they went numb. I tried to stand, but I couldn’t.

Creeeeeak.

The black stuff bubbled out of the wall in front of me, sliding down to the floor like a slug. It slopped into a pile, forming feet and legs. It only took seconds. Shoulders. A head.

A man in a wheelchair.

Creeeeeeak.

The squeal of metal and rubber. The man rolled closer, his breaths raspy and labored. My heart raced. My stomach cramped.

I couldn’t move.

Creeeeeeak.

I knew who he was. I tried to close my eyes, but they wouldn’t respond. I tried to stand again, but none of my limbs would obey. The shadow wheeled closer, the chair moving on its own.

Creeeeeeeak.

My father, or what once was my father, stared dully at me through dead eyes. His body was a heap of skin, a husk, planted in the wheelchair. His piercing blue eyes had gone out like an old light bulb, but they were open and they were fixed on me. His lips bulged and sagged. Living, but lifeless.

“Is that what you want, Caleb?” His voice came clearly even though his mouth didn’t move.

My heart pounded against my ribcage. What I wanted was to run, or at least look away. But I was frozen, my eyes glued open, focused on him.

“Is this what you wanted?”

Tears burned my eyes. I couldn’t move my arms to wipe them away. He rolled closer.

Tick, tick, tick, tick…

In a flash of light, he was gone. In his place, a golden orb hung in the air, blurry, like I was looking at it through a fogged window.

Tick, tick, tick, tick…

Was that… the watch?

A thick, grey mist dripped down the walls. It swirled around the golden orb. A tingling sensation ran up my arms and legs. I could move them again. I stood, carefully, holding my arms out from my sides to make sure I didn’t fall. The vapors coiled together in mid-air in front of me, forming into the face of a man. His body dripped out beneath him.

He was older and very thin. The light blue suit he was wearing looked very expensive, but also like it was made centuries ago. The wrinkles around his small black eyes creased as he examined me. A smile spread across his thin lips.

The mist behind him formed into other shapes. People. Children. He was surrounded by at least twenty shadows, clothed in old-fashioned suits and dresses. Some were my age while others were much younger.

The man reached his hand into his suit coat. I stepped forward in anticipation.

He had it. The watch. It shone gold against his gray body. The cover was engraved with a picture of a locomotive, the watch face concealed. I’d almost taken that watch. Why didn’t I? It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Hudson Granger said. “I have to do what?” He’d misheard the declaration from his assistant.

“Lucas?”

“Get married.” Lucas Cole held the tablet and looked up at him.

“You can stay in your position with Granger Stores and will be given your inheritance if you get married before the end of the month. It’s one of the stipulations in your father’s will. Every child must be married before the end of January. It’s already January twenty-eighth.”

“Or I can’t inherit that money and keep my position as the head of Granger Stores?” Hudson pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m the only child who isn’t married.”

“Correct.” Lucas sighed and swiped his finger over the screen.

“Apparently, your sisters don’t get their money until you’re married.

They’ve got incentive to get you coupled up.”

“Crap.” He swayed before settling on the edge of his desk.

“They want the cash. Lia needs money for her second honeymoon, Cassie wants to put her kids through private school, and Desiree needs an infusion of money to her design studio.”

“Yes, yes, and yes.” Lucas paled. His blue eyes widened.

“They’re on the way up here. Looks like Cassie was in the lobby with a brunette woman. She’s trying to fix you up, I bet.”

“I’m gay.”

“I know that, and so do your sisters.” Lucas placed the tablet on Hudson’s desk. “What do you want to do? This is your life, and it should be your decision.”

What is Vella? A Rundown of the New Platform for Readers

What is Vella? It’s a new reading platform by Amazon available through their website or the Kindle iOS app. It works very similar to other online serial platforms like Wattpad and Radish, with a coin or token pay system to unlock episodes. Each story has 3 FREE episodes to get the flavor of the story, and then can be unlocked further after purchasing tokens. The tokens can be purchased in different packages, with more given for the more expensive bundles.

Paid episodes are priced by word count. For example, 3500 words in an episode would be 35 tokens. The word limit on Vella per episode is 600 to 5,000 words. So, no episode can be more than 50 tokens or at the very least, 6 tokens. When logging into Amazon’s website or through the iOS app, you can get 200 free tokens to start reading. You can follow stories and like individual episodes. After purchasing your first bundle of tokens, you are awarded a weekly “Fav” which you can bestow on your favorite story you’ve read that week. The likes, favs and follows all help stories become more visible in the system like many other platforms.

The fastest and easiest way to find stories are to follow direct links to them. Each story is assigned an ASIN, but I have found that search abilities on Vella can be hard to isolate. The easiest way to find Vella stories by your favorite author is by doing a search with their author name, a combination of their story title and their author name, or just the story name. Seaching for just Vella doesn’t seem to bring up much yet. But the system is still new, and things are being sorted out daily as the platform gets more use.

From witches to time traveling researchers, she is letting her imagination soar to explore new worlds and write all the details down. Marilyn has traveled to Paris, London, Sydney, and Munich. She loves to include these in her settings as much as can allow. Best of all is letting her reader enjoy them through the perspective of a character. Here love for K-pop has produced her current rock star/K-pop romance project, Love Over Kpop, available on Kindle Vella. She currently lives in Northern California with her husband and cat. The cat, of course, is the center of attention.

Big Apple Tree

There will always be big apple tree

Big apple tree heralds of being free.

Greatest city where fortunes redouble

Graceful city where everybody is noble,

And also a city where doves are humble.

New York City is the one of Big Apple.

People so far use cars or planes to travel

When next generation begins to shuffle,

Visits to New York is by space shuttle

And create centre of galaxy if possible.

As humans grow to feel a living glory

Instincts will remerge just as in priory.

To chant on around Big Apple Tree

The world will convene so as to agree.

Big Apple Tree as City of New York

And there is much stamina on every dock.

There are persons with stripes of zebra

And there are varieties in every single aura.

When musicians play pulling their strings

Big Apple Tree contents behave like kings.

About the Author: The world and life in general was promising to me until I was 17 years in my native country of Ethiopia. While a high school student in 1974, the world around me came crashing down when communist military Junta took state power and soon started a killing spree, at times committing mass murder. This was very traumatizing and the start of Stalinist ‘Red Terror’ on the ground. It was bad enough to hate being in life. From this, I quickly learnt life in the world is about taking on adventures.

With six of my school friends and one of our teachers, we formed an alliance to take action against the Junta. With 2 years of preparation we had managed to inform the public and get the local police headquarters on our side. Then, in April 1976 we staged a rebellion without violence in Nekempte, provincial capital of Welega. The revolt was short-lived, nothing lost with little gain. Amidst media control of the Junta, the news of rebellion was heard across the country. After that, my friends and I vowed to individually take on challenges for democracy as a life-long mission. We split apart and I went underground. When the security situation became harsh, I left the country for Sudan.

Despite traumatizing news and the realities around me with the ‘Periods of Gloom and Doom’, I took refuge in reading classical poetry which became my long time passion.

After a long journey through ups and downs, I suffered a car accident in Sudan, and left Africa all together – migrating to Canada in 1990. Through my journey in life, I looked around for a drug of relief from grief and nostalgia. Poetry reading had become my choice for entertainment and to delete bad memories and traumas. Soon after I realized that positive poetry is as good as drugs, music and paintings are, I decided to write one and here I begin with World of Stars.
