Challenge: Lose my virginity before my 24th birthday. Time Left: 23 days.

Appletinis, a semi-meltdown, and a ‘Lose My Virginity Challenge’ post. That’s all it took for my little blog to go viral.

I’m going to be fine. I’m anonymous. I can just delete the post and pretend it never happened. No big deal, right?

Wrong!

My co-worker crush, Logan—gorgeous, yummy and out of my league—found out about my secret deadline-driven cherry popping quest.

Humiliated would be an understatement.

Fortunately, my besties come to the rescue with a brilliant plan that involves my trending blog. If all went smoothly, I’d not only win over the untouchable Logan but also live my dream of becoming a full-time writer.

The plan isn’t just brilliant, it’s perfect… until my new boss, Alexander Freeman comes into the picture with his Brooks Brothers suit and Tom Ford briefcase.

So what if the Stiff is hot? I will not ruin my one chance with Logan or my dream career.

But I’m in more trouble than I originally thought.

Turns out Alex has a few intentions of his own and a huge secret I’m totally unprepared for.

Keeping to my inescapable what goes up, must come down philosophy, it seems only fitting that during my first job interview, I tripped over a cord and face-planted into someone’s desk, breaking my nose. You wouldn’t believe the amount of blood that can come out of your face. By the horrified gasps of those in the office and their reluctance to come anywhere near me, you would’ve thought I had transformed into a hideous zombie, unsteady on my feet, reaching out for help and gurgling through the faucet of red flowing out of my nostrils.

Thankfully, someone did eventually come to my rescue. With watering eyes and searing pain, and in a state of panic from the amount of blood on my shirt and hands, I could put girl power on the wayside. Adrenaline doesn’t give a crap about your sense of independence or not wanting someone to be your “savior.” It has only one job—survival.

I took his help without shame.

Although I couldn’t see his face through blurred vision, I still remember his voice, calming me and telling me that I’ll be fine and how he had had his nose broken twice. My heartbeat eventually slowed to a more normal rate as he waited with me for an ambulance. There’s something reassuring about having someone by your side who understands you. Someone who had been through it and was willing to go through it again with you.

I never got his name, and I sure as hell won’t go back for a second interview.

So if you’re out there, I just wanted to say thank you.

Never Give Up!

At 8 years old, I fell in love with telling stories. By age 10, I decided I wanted to write novels for the rest of my life—so I started right away.

The problem was, when you’re 10, you don’t know how to accomplish a long-term goal. My writing method was simple: choose an idea, and write. See where it takes you. My record at the time was around 50 handwritten pages. That was an amazing feat, since I usually became bored by page 10. I hated the idea of a plan. I hated the idea of revising what I’d already written. I wanted to swim in the creative river, going with the flow.

I’d set those manuscripts—technically, I suppose that’s what they were—aside. But I wasn’t quitting. No, I was just “putting it on the shelf for later.” I don’t know if I ever returned to that proverbial shelf!

Long story short: I didn’t know how to complete a project that would take months.

So as a teenager, I gave up.

I didn’t stop writing. I taught myself screenwriting because I could focus on dialogue—the descriptions took too long, I figured. But in truth, it was laziness. So I turned to songwriting, because I could write a set of lyrics in 30 minutes.

But the dream of writing novels never died. Every few years, an inkling arose inside me. A desire to give it one more try, but I assumed that dream was dead. I jotted down story ideas, but I never acted on them. The notes were enough to tie me over.

Eventually, I couldn’t shake the desire to return to that original dream. It kept rising up in my heart. So, at 29 years old, after not even attempting it for 15 years, I decided to give it another try.

But something occurred during those latent years that I hadn’t expected. I’d worked in the IT field. I learned about databases and designed them. I wrote computer programming. I analyzed processes and managed projects that would take at least 9 months.

And in the IT world, I learned some interesting skills: How to identify logic errors. How to stick with a project, no matter how painful, because a client depended on my delivery. How to assemble a complex plan, identify milestones (critical moments along the way), and estimate time. I grew efficient, learned how to cut the fat from my time and reinvest it to accomplish more. I learned trial and error. I learned how to start strong, end strong … and keep plugging away during the remaining 90 percent of the way.

In short, I learned how to not give up—or how not to put a project on the shelf.

What if I treated a novel like an IT project? I wondered. What if I developed a timeline and identified my milestones so I could track progress? What if, as I did during process analysis, I developed a 10,000-foot view, a 500-foot view, and a ground-level view?

Those turned out to be the keys to completing a novel. Once I had a plan, I kept moving forward, whether I felt excited or blasé. And I was scared to death I’d “put it on the shelf!” But I realized that, once you have a plan, if you keep showing up, it’s a matter of mathematics: 1+1+1. If you keep showing up, you will reach the end.

Nine months later, I had the finished, final draft of The Landing, the first novel I’d ever written.

I never took a course in creative writing. But God wired each of us differently, and the skills I lacked wouldn’t be taught in a writing class. It required working with computers, machines that don’t negotiate with you or meet you halfway. You need to find a solution within their framework. And a solution always showed up.

If you have a dream but don’t know how to get there, try putting together a plan. Try doing something, one step at a time. And if you feel stuck, all is not lost! Your answer might show up unexpectedly.

She’s America’s hottest new celebrity. But her identity remains a secret.

Lily Machara is a wisecracking auto mechanic. She’s never cared for glitz or drama. The only problem: The woman Ryder imagines isn’t the true Lily.

Or is it?

Now, as Lily and Ryder give in to mutual curiosity and a budding romance, Lily’s life — secrets and all — fall victim to a pop culture with one question on its mind: Who is the woman in Ryder Flynn’s art?

Ryder rubbed his eyes. No wonder they felt so sore—one glance at his watch told him it was almost two in the morning. Although he could still hear well, the loud music seemed to have whittled his sensitivity to about 85 percent, as though he’d wrapped his eardrums in cotton.

After dinner, he’d allowed Chase to drag him to a nightclub, which was where Ryder had last seen his friend before returning to the hotel alone by way of a taxi. They would find each other before the art show opened that morning at ten o’clock. Chase might push his limits, but he was never late.

Now, upon entering the hotel, he found the lobby empty except for a concierge at the front desk. The room’s silence rivaled that of a funeral parlor. Ryder made a beeline for the elevator bank and pushed the round button to hail a ride upstairs. With a glance around the corner, he found the doors to the art show shut and locked. He detected no pulsating rhythms, which meant the wedding reception had ended, as well.

Ryder heard the elevator tone—followed by the swish of fabric coming from his left. He halted. Listened.

Another swish, like the chiffon of a bridesmaid’s dress.

When the elevator doors opened, Ryder wasn’t standing in front of them. With one eyebrow furrowed and his ear cocked upward, he eased toward the far end of the elevator bank, then peered around the corner.

More rustling of fabric, then tiny sobs. Step by step, he followed the sounds. On his right, he noticed someone had left open the door to a dark room. Another sob came from inside that room. A female voice.

“Hello?” Ryder whispered. His eyes adjusted to the dark as he brushed his hand along the wall in search of a light switch. At last, he located the switch and flipped it on.

The room was small. He wandered to a far corner, where a desk topped with random clutter sat, a four-star hotel’s answer to a dumping ground. When he peeked behind the desk, he discovered a young woman. Weeping, she sat crumpled on the floor with her back against the desk. A peach-colored rose trampled by life.

Background of The Girl from the Lighthouse by Willard Thompson – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Willard Thompson will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Background of the Book

Writing THE GIRL FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE was an unusual and enjoyable experience for me. To begin, I was in the Santa Barbara Art Museum with my wife, standing in front of a painting by Berthe Morisot, an artist who became one of the characters in THE GIRL FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE. The painting is titled View of Paris from the Trocadero. In it, two women stand with a small girl looking off into the city of Paris far in the distance. The women are blocked from moving forward into the city by a wooden fence that cuts diagonally across the painting. It isn’t a strong barrier, more symbolic in nature. I was struck by how the painting represented the restricted status of Victorian era women. From that painting I got the idea to write about a woman of that time who was strong and independent, and in no way indoctrinated about proper women’s roles. That woman became Emma Dobbins, my protagonist.

A short time before that, I was involved in the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s project to secure the Point Conception lighthouse lens from the U.S. Coast Guard for exhibit in the museum when the lighthouse was decommissioned. While doing the research on the lighthouse and its keepers, the idea came to me that I should write a commemorative book about the history of the lighthouse, and the lives of the lighthouse keepers, to have available for guests to purchase on the opening night of the exhibition. In just seven months I researched, wrote and published the book. Finished copies were delivered to the museum only one day before the opening ceremony. The process gave me a thorough knowledge of the Point Conception lighthouse to use in the backstory of THE GIRL FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE.

By the way, I learned that the great lens, made of 640 pieces of special glass was manufactured in Paris in the 1850s, so France was also on my mind.

Some of the background for the story goes back even further. Three or four years ago I was researching some family genealogical history. I was specifically interested in my Canadian grandmother, Emma Thompson. She had a very unusual upbringing, and I thought I might write some kind of homage to her. I want to be clear though that the Emma in THE GIRL FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE is in no way representative of my late grandmother.

Writing for me is always an exploration. I try to learn as much as I can about a subject as I write. While writing THE GIRL FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE, I learned about the treatment of women in Paris during the Victorian era. For example, young women were disrespected if they went about alone in public. When Emma tried to climb to the upper level of an omnibus, she was prevented by the driver from doing so because it was thought improper for a woman’s legs to be seen climbing the stairs. Courtship between young men and women was highly formal. There were many other restrictions on women we almost laugh at today, that you will read about in the novel. The information I uncovered adds to the sense of reality of the novel. I even had to learn about the use of contraceptives in the 1870s.

But I think the biggest surprise came when I had finished the manuscript. On reading it and discussing it with my wife, who is also a good editor, we decided the story did not work well in a third person format. So for the next six months, I literally became Emma, rewriting the story in the first person, present tense. That way I was able to bring the book’s characters and my readers as close together as possible. I know that this may sound strange to some readers, but I have always created strong female characters, and I listened carefully to what Emma was telling me as I wrote. I believe her story reads beautifully.

The Girl From the Lighthouse tells the compelling story of Emma Dobbins.

Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she was raised by her father, a lighthouse keeper at Point Conception in California, where early on she discovers her artistic talent. At the age of 17, Emma travels to Paris with a chaperone, to attend art school but is separated from the chaperone when the woman becomes ill. Emma arrives alone in Paris with no money, no language skills, and no friends. A chance meeting with a young working girl in the train station becomes her first Parisian friend.

The setting is Paris in the 1860s-70s, the start of the Belle Èpoque. France soon is involved in the Franco/Prussian War and the Commune Uprising; difficult times for Emma and all Frenchmen. Initially rejected by art schools, her determination keeps her moving toward her goal in the art world, where the Impressionists are starting to change the world. Frenchmen fall in love with her beautiful face and lustrous dark hair. Some wanted to paint her, others to court her, but either way, she does not abide by the rules they try to impose on her because she never learned them. She grows into an accomplished artist but never gives up her own principles… even when someone steals something precious to her and she fights to get it back.

The story is told in the first person, present tense, allowing the reader to enter the story and feel a part of it as it unfolds, sharing with Emma her highs and lows, loves and rejections, all focused in the art world of Paris. The novel is filled with vivid characters, both fictional and real people, and the story unfolds gracefully from the 1870s until 1912, just prior to the start of WWI.

“It’s been several months,” I tell Berthe Morisot, “and I still copy with pad and pencil and sometimes watercolors. I think I have learned a great deal, but I’m still not ready for oils.”

“You should try,” she encourages me. “Jacque-Louis David is a good artist for you to copy. His portraits are beautifully executed, especially the one of Madame Recamier you are working on. Portraits like that are the kind of commissions you are likely to get when you are ready.”

“How so?”

“There is always demand for portraits of wives and children that are best done by women artists.”

I study the wine in my glass, using the pause to consider Berthe’s recommendation. “I hope to paint landscapes one day,” I tell her.

“Difficult for a woman,” she replies. “Traveling alone to paint a landscape is often…” She pauses, “How do I say, looked down upon? There are not many buyers for the work of a woman landscape artist.

“I want to be free to paint whatever I want.”

She cuts a slice of cheese from the wedge on her plate and adds it to a piece of baguette before taking a sip from her glass. She looks at me with her doleful dark eyes the whole time. “That can be difficult,” she says at last. “Consider your decision carefully. It is easier for us to paint in a boudoir than side-by-side in a world with men.” She pauses again and picks at a piece of ham.

Feeling frustrated, and looking for a response that won’t offend my friend, I stab my fork at a mushroom. “It seems to me women in Paris have only limited freedom. Do you find it that way, Berthe?”

“I have never thought much about it, but yes, I do. It’s just the way life is for women.”

A step creaked, and Alex froze. Was the house settling? Why had he sat with his back to the staircase? Dammit! He hadn’t put up a shield. Another creak, and the fine hair rose on the back of his neck. He shuddered, dread seeping into him as he became aware of a presence behind him. He choked back a cry when a cold breath brushed his skin. What is there? Alex wanted to look, but fear kept him immobile.

“Christopher?” he tried, but the word was snatched from the air before it became sound. Pressure built in Alex’s ears. Oh, God. The thing pressed against his back, a blanket of ice, chilling his blood. The air froze, a sharp knife stabbing his chest with each inhalation.

“Christopher!”

Why couldn’t Christopher hear him? Couldn’t he feel the terrible presence in the room? Alex stared at him, but Christopher continued to gaze at his hands relaxed on his lap. Fingers cold as death ghosted over Alex’s cheek. “Mine.” The whisper was a spike of ice in his head, and Alex watched in horror as a dark tendril of something curled around him and stretched toward Christopher, taking shape as an arm and reaching hand. Christopher’s aura flared, but couldn’t keep out the darkness that spread like a bruise, blocking his light.

“No!” Alex scrambled up, slipping on the smooth floor but managing to keep his feet. Adrenaline pumped through him, and he clenched his hands, stepping closer to Christopher. “Get away from him!”

ACT IV____

SUNSET

Though he could not say why, the old man recognized it as his last awakening. His every arthritic limb and digit ached to the bone. His wrinkled skin hung over loose worn muscles too weary to move. His every haggard breath came with fire but also brought the scents of summer air—he was outside, of all places—rain was coming. The blessed rain—he had not felt a welcoming drop touch his face since that fateful moment he had fallen prey to the Other—so long ago.

The stars shone beyond a super moon in a black velvet sky he had not seen in four centuries. He settled to his popping knees and ran his hands through tall grass. Darkness settled over him, and for the first time in ages, instead of fear it brought instead an overwhelming sense of peace.

She appeared before him, a familiar woman from his youth, a great lady made of light and grace. Her compassionate eyes shone silver as she wiped an errant tear from his cheek that matched one on hers and said, “My dearest Theo,” she said. “My dear, dear friend… Taketh mine hand into thine own. Thou art free at last!”

And the old man, who was in truth a young boy of thirteen summers, felt at last the final rest he had been denied since when as a youth, he had been Chosen by the Ancient Enemy, known also as the First Fallen, the Great Deceiver, the Prince of Darkness.

Work/life balance and other myths…

As a physician with a busy medical practice, and a mom of three very active children, one of my biggest challenges is work/life balance. Some say that the concept of balance is nothing more than a chimera—something we all struggle to attain, and then just as we think it’s within our grasp, something happens, and the entire structure collapses into a pile of toothpicks and dust.

In medicine, we hear the term “burnout” bandied about. According to the latest statistics, burnout among physicians and other medical personnel is at an all-time high. Media outlets have dubbed it a national epidemic. I won’t go into all the factors that contributed to this crisis (you can read more about it on my website, and in my book The Burnout Cure), but I hope that shining light on the issue will lead to a solution.

In the meantime, we need to practice self-care and set boundaries. The key is learning how to say NO. And that’s what I try to do. Do I want to join yet another hospital committee? NO. Can I volunteer at XYZ event next Tuesday? NO. Can I bake cookies for the school fundraiser? No, but I’d be happy to pick up store-bought cookies on my way home from work. Can I drive each child to and from every extracurricular activity? No, but we have a perfectly good bus system, and here’s a TAP card for each of you, my darlings. (Okay, I haven’t quite implemented that last one, but the kids are still young…) Anyway, you get the idea.

An adjunct to saying No is learning to delegate. I’ve started doing that, both at home and at work. I also cut back my work hours. I am now officially working 80% time, which translates to about 50-55 hours per week, not including night call (about once every other week), and an evening or weekend urgent care shift (also about twice a month).

I exercise, though less than I should, and try to get enough sleep, though that doesn’t always happen.

At home, I’ve become good at consolidating activities (aka multi-tasking) for the sake of efficiency. Like last week, hubs and I went on a “shopping date”: we dropped off the kids at Taekwondo, then headed for the local Smart & Final to do our weekly grocery shop. Picked the kids up on the way home, then opened a bottle of wine to toast a successful outing, and retired to bed for the rest of the date.

Last, but not least, I write. This is my therapy. While in real life I can’t always control what happens, when it comes to writing, I’m in charge. I get to have fun and exorcise my demons at the same time (multi-tasking!).

The characters I write about face some of the same challenges I do. They aren’t perfect and they don’t have unlimited resources. Sometimes they need to make tough choices and hope for the best. Ultimately, though, I write contemporary romance—which means that one thing I can absolutely guarantee: a happily-ever-after.

Lena Shapiro. Successful surgeon. Dutiful daughter. She sacrificed her personal life to build her career and take care of her mother and sister. Now thirty-nine and single, she watches her peers pairing off and having kids, and wonders if she missed out on her own chance at happiness.

Assigned to mentor a visiting colleague, Lena finds herself falling for the man instead. But Adam Sterling is all wrong for her: he’s too young, too arrogant, and too willing to push personal and professional boundaries. And he’s leaving L.A. for a job on the opposite coast.

With the date of Adam’s departure looming ever nearer, will Lena retreat to the safety of her familiar solitary life, or will she take a chance on an uncertain future with the man who might make her dreams come true?

(Please note: This is a steamy contemporary romance that contains mature themes and explicit content, meant for adults 18 and over. It is a stand-alone novel, with no cliff-hangers, and a guaranteed HEA.)

“The thing about Westport,” Adam said, “is that no one outside of Connecticut’s ever heard of it. And people from outside the U.S. are like, Connecti-what? So in the end I usually say I’m from just outside New York, because everyone knows New York, right?”

She paused, chopsticks halfway to her mouth. “I’ve never actually been to New York.”

“You’re kidding,” he said. “Never?”

“We didn’t have the money growing up. And once there was money, I didn’t have the time.”

“But…what about vacations?”

“Welcome to my world. It’s called private practice. You eat what you kill—or rather, don’t kill.” She smiled and shrugged. “I’ve taken a few weekends here and there. Santa Barbara, San Diego. Local stuff.”

If his brows climbed any higher, they’d disappear from his face. “Damn,” he said. “We’ve got to broaden your horizons.”

Lena didn’t answer. Travel was something that other people did. Classmates who didn’t need full scholarships to Harvard-Westlake, who skied every winter in Aspen and Telluride, and split their summers between Europe and Hawaii. College roommates who could spare a gap year to explore Indonesia or climb Kilimanjaro.

In school, and later in residency, she’d promised herself: someday she would see the world. Or at least some small portion of it beyond California.

And now, here she was, a decade later, on the cusp of a major life change that would make travel next to impossible.

Mimadamos by Chadi Ghaith – Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Chadi Ghaith will be awarding a copy of Mimadamos: The Eden of Choice, (US only) to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Lebanese author Chadi B. Ghaith brings beliefs that were held in secrecy for a thousand years to awareness in Mimadamos: The Eden of Choice (Fifthscience Inc., July 5, 2017). Ghaith’s book revolves around an ancient triangle of the most significant characters on earth, paralleled by three of the most significant forces in life, and their combined story in space and time. Journey through this fable and explore the ideas that have mystified mankind for centuries: good and evil, heaven and hell, the beginning and end of the world.

Did the ending precede the beginning? Are we only here on earth to comprehend its machinations? Is there room for choice to shape our destiny in the wake of fate and its brutal logic? Mimadamos is a unique, philosophically-rich fantasy which journeys through the depths of conflict and harmony that we understand as the spirit. It decodes the magic of the most ancient scripts known to man, the symbolic fall from Eden and the long anticipated armageddon, revealing a logic so unique that it brings history to its conclusive end.

She had all the power in the world—could turn sand into gold if she so desired—but she had refrained from using it. What was the point of using magic? It was like playing a video game in which one was granted unlimited lives regardless of performance. Instead, Destiny had agreed to play the game of reality with all its inherent rules and unpleasantness.

So, although she had the ability to think herself into any place she liked, she preferred to travel there with sunshine, good food, the company of beloved souls, and unexpected adventures along the way. For it was in the journey, not the destination, that she took the most pleasure.

A person cannot wield unlimited magic, she thought. If one became all-powerful, one could create his own reality at will, which would make the person his own creator. But no one could stand being both the Creator and the Created in the same world, for that would engender
unbearable solitude.

Just then, the women started to ululate, pulling Destiny from her musings. The truth was, even without their celebratory wailing, she would have known that her groom was nearby; she could sense him.

It’s all been preordained, she thought as she steeled herself.

About the Author: CHADI B. GHAITH has spent many years introducing an ancient mind science called Fifthscience to the public; Mimadamos is his first attempt at translating the magic of Fifthscience into a modern narrative. He is a native of Lebanon; however, he acquired his high school and university levels in Texas. Ghaith studied Arts and Film at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He now lives in Beirut with his wife and three children.

Six Musts Every BDSM Should Have by Anarie Brady – Guest Blog and Giveaway

*****
In the Erotica genre, particularly BDSM, every story must have 1. Strong Characters 2. Lots of sex 3. Believable plot 4. Detailed descriptions 5. Consensual adults 6. A bit of discomfort.

Strong Characters, in my opinion, lead the way to a good story. If readers can’t identify with or like the main characters, they won’t keep reading. In order for that to happen, the characters, especially the main ones, need to be dynamic and well rounded. There must be more to them than just a strong sex drive!

Because I write Erotica, BDSM in particular, there obviously must have lots of detailed sex scenes. No one wants to read erotica that leaves the bedroom door closed. That door needs to be left wide open. Okay, that door and every other door! Who says sex can only take place in the bedroom!

While some of what I write dances around Fantasy, the plots must still be believable. A woman trying to make her way in the world, a friend’s betrayal, discovering something shocking about your own past, working hard against the odds to make a living. These are all plots that most people can relate to regardless of the time period or locale.

Leaving some things to the imagination is all well and good, but each story needs lots and lots of details. Does the heroine have a scar across her back and shoulder? What happened? What does it look like? Does the hero have a secret he’s ashamed of? Is that a REAL Picasso hanging in a public restaurant? Does the whiskey have undertones of honey or vanilla? Details make a story come to life.

Because of the content of what I write, all of my main characters are adults who are well aware of and consenting to every act they partake in. There’s a Non-Con (Non consensual) genre out there that is fabulous, but I write strictly consensual. The taboos I delve into with BDSM are pretty standard – bondage, spanking, blindfolds, public display, that type of thing. I also make sure to give trigger warnings. I’ve been sexually assaulted and I would hate to have a reader suffer a flashback because of something in one of my stories.

Nonetheless, I like to push the boundaries of my characters just a bit. Perhaps the heroine is new to the idea of bondage and a bit frightened. Still, she is willing to try it in order to please her dominant. Also, for a long time f/f scenes were a no-no even while m/m scenes were being celebrated. I try to throw in a few f/f or poly scenes as long as they add to the plot even if such descriptions might make some readers a bit uncomfortable.

A romance anthology unlike any other, Queens of Hearts will seduce you, romance you, make you laugh, and make you afraid with four very different stories from four different, talented authors.

‘Regina’ by Adesanya
Her name is Queen by definition, and she wears her dreads – dreads she spent half of her life growing – atop her head as her crown. Her name is Regina, and as romance sweeps through the wintry air with promises of Saint Valentine and Cupid’s mighty arrow, she finds herself entangled with a handsome man who knows all the right things to say. As a love affair blooms and romance comes into full blossom, Regina and Clive seem like a match made in Heaven. But is Regina really the woman that Clive believes her to be, or will a dark secret put an end to their cold-weathered fling?

‘All I Want is to be Happy’ by Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe
Michael is feeling down over his life. He works two jobs, has four roommates, can’t afford a car, and he’s as single as they come. Worse yet, after winning the crown at a local drag competition, he begins comparing himself to his nemesis – Madame Vivian, whom he stole the crown from. Now, as a popular author and a missing wallet come into his life, Michael finds himself on a series of misadventures that will either help him see the silver lining of life or drive him further into his self-despair.

‘On Bended Knee’ by Anarie Brady
As the Greek goddess of Springtime and the queen of the underworld, Kora divides her time equally between her husband, sweet and gentle Aides, god of Hades and her dominant, Grant, a.k.a. Grannus, Celtic god of salt water and spa. This arrangement suited all three of them perfectly for years. However, when Hecate, Kora’s handmaiden and supposed best friend decides she’d make a better paramour for Aides, things could change drastically for everyone.

‘You Don’t Eat People You Love’ by Jae El Foster
An infection is spreading throughout the town, and it has made its way to the countryside where a party of high school seniors is underway. When the infection spreads through the party in a most savage way, Bethany and Tommy must flee for their lives before they too are either eaten like their friends or they become a part of the living dead. Will sheer determination and the love that bonds their teenage romance be enough to keep them alive, or will they face a fate that is much worse than death?

“So what are you going to do with yourself for the next six months?” Hecate had asked.

“I’m not sure. I have no doubt I’ll find something,” she’d answered lazily.

“I have a friend I think you’d really like.”

“Hecate. I’ve told you. I’m done with mortals. It’s simply too heartbreaking.”

“What do you mean? It’s not like you can’t meet up with a mortal’s shade once he’s here in the underworld.”

Kora laughed with derision. She loved Hecate dearly, but sometimes the woman’s lack of foresight maddened her. “Not for me, silly, for them. I can’t count the number of times I have broken a mortal’s heart when I leave him to return here.”

“Oh. Right,” Hecate said. “Well, that won’t be a problem with Grant. He’s a god.”

Kora raised herself to her elbows and stared at her friend. “Not a Greek god.”

“No. Celtic. His ancient name is Grannus and he’s a god of sunlight and healing waters.”

“Interesting. What’s he like?”

“Stern, actually. He takes healing quite seriously.”

“As well he should,” Kora acknowledged. She’d had her fill of gods who failed to devote enough time and effort to their realms. “And personally?”

Hecate sighed dreamily. “He’s a perfect specimen of a male. He’s all lightness. Blonde hair, blue eyes, skin the color of fresh cream.”

Kora laughed again. “Okay, so he’s handsome, but I meant what is he like in his personal life?”

“Oh. Well, he’s not all lightness there, which is why I’ve never hooked up with him. Not my style at all.”

“Meaning?”

“He likes to take charge, give orders, that type of thing. He’s definitely an Alpha male. Personally, I’m more of an Alpha female, so we just never clicked romantically.”

Now, Kora was intrigued.

“Oh, crap.”

Gracie Hofner had reached up to grab a box filled with paint supplies, but in the process of pulling it off the upper shelf, she sneezed. When she did, she pulled the box out from the shelf and downward. As its contents tumbled toward her, she tilted backward on the ladder, losing her balance. As best she could, she shielded her head and neck. She would strike the concrete floor of her garage any second.

Two strong hands grasped her shoulders. “I got you.”

Her feet hit the floor. The ladder crashed. She still held onto the now-empty box.

“I got you,” repeated in her ear. Softer this time.

Gracie recognized the voice. Milo Porter, her new tenant. She slumped against him and breathed out through her mouth to release some of the adrenaline.

Milo was stronger than she’d given him credit for. His hands were firm, and the muscles in his chest supported her hefty farm-girl bones and workout muscles without a problem. He smelled good, too.

His arms went around her shoulders. “Are you all right?”

Gracie nodded, not yet trusting herself to speak without sounding like a babbling idiot. She took another deep breath and released it before taking a step away and standing straight. Her insides still trembled, so she inched around to face him. He allowed her to turn, but his hands never left her shoulders.

READ THE BLURB

Meghan Mallory has a plan for her life and it does not involve falling in love. She doesn’t have the time nor the inclination. She’s too busy trying to save the world. But when a freak snowstorm puts her in the path of a man she has secretly been fascinated with for years, she is forced to reconsider her stance on dating. Spencer is rude and obnoxious with his bad boy swagger but then he rescues her when she gets stranded on the side of the road, like a knight in tarnished armor, and sweeps her away to his house to ride out the blizzard.

Spencer Collins likes his life just fine, thank you very much. As the owner of the lifestyle club Cuffs & Spurs in Jackson Hole, he has a bevy of available subs who are his to command – not that any of them have held his interest in longer than he can remember. When his best friend’s sister-in-law gets herself into trouble, Spencer heads out to rescue the little brat who is in need of a firm hand. But he never expects to be forced to confront the incendiary heat that has always existed between them.

As the storm rages around them, they surrender to a passion hotter than the sun. Now that he has felt her surrender, Spencer attempts to lure Meghan into his world. But will they let go of their pasts or will they allow secrets to destroy them?

READ AN EXCERPT

She lowered her forehead to the steering wheel, trying not to panic.

If she couldn’t leave her car because of the storm and no one happened by, she would be forced to wait out the weather in her car and hope like hell she didn’t freeze to death. But that was better than attempting to walk in the cold and getting stuck out in the open.

Meghan spent the next two frigid hours watching her gas gauge dip toward empty. The snow had not let up, in fact it had intensified. But the idea of staying put and possibly freezing to death once her gas ran out had little appeal. There had to be someplace nearby where she could weather the storm and ride it out. A cabin where she could build a fire… something, anything was better than this. With her courage failing, she gathered up her backpack. She had water, protein bars, and trail mix, along with some other essentials including the solar blanket she had wrapped around herself for extra warmth. She folded the blanket up and shoved it inside the pack. She could do this; trudge a mile or two in a treacherous blizzard until she found a place where she could ride out the storm. Meghan reached for the keys in the ignition to shut the car off.

Thud, thud, thud, pounded against her window. She jerked and screeched at the dark figure beyond. Staring, her heart hammering in her chest, she tried to discern whether they were friend or foe—for all she knew, he was an axe murderer. Then again, even they wouldn’t be so stupid as to be out in this crud. It was definitely a he, given the size and shape of his face, not to mention the dark swath of facial hair.

The man yanked the door open. Icy wind blasted into the small confines, competing with the heat pumping out her vents.

“What the hell are you doing, little brat?” His gruff, deep masculine bass voice shattered the stillness.

That voice. The sinful, rich, deep voice slid over her skin like a whispered caress, made her think of melted decadent dark chocolate sliding over her tongue, and caused all her girly bits to stand at attention. Him? Out of all the people who lived and worked in Jackson Hole, all the tourists who flooded the streets with their rental cars, he was her rescuer?

Spencer Collins.

The man who had been a thorn in her side ever since she and her sister had moved to Jackson Hole.

“Nothing intentional, big guy, I can assure you. Storm came up a lot faster than I expected.”

She didn’t mention she tended to get distracted like an absent-minded professor when she was taking samples and measurements and collecting data to study later. Nor that she had lost track of time and had been jolted back to awareness when the first snowflakes began to fall. Total rookie mistake on her part, and she knew it. If she had left an hour prior, she would already be sequestered at Jenna’s, warm and fed. But as it was, she had made the hike too late, with the storm kicking into gear around her.

“There’s this thing called a cell phone.”

If she wasn’t frozen clear down to her bones and didn’t need him to rescue her from the prospect of freezing to death, she would have decked the man. Spencer was acting like she was an imbecile, incapable of figuring out how to survive. She would show him. She yanked her phone from her pocket, breathing a sigh of relief that the screen hadn’t magically changed to make her look like a freaking idiot. The no service message was still displayed clearly on the screen and she waved it in front of his face. “Ha, funny man. I’m not getting any service, so if you have another idea, I’m all for it.”

“Come on. Let’s get you out of here.” He held out a hand for her to take.

“Appreciate it.” Meghan ignored the hand, shut her car off and killed the lights. She grabbed her purse and her backpack as she climbed out, bringing her body into close contact with his towering form. Rarely did Meghan ever feel short or intimidated, tending to carry the disposition of a chihuahua who thought himself an attack dog. Except with Spencer. He made her feel every lacking inch of her five-foot stature.
