The Right To Remain Silent

He never expects to find her there…

Officer Quinten Blackthorne is working undercover to bring the Rudnikov Mob Empire to its knees. He never expects to find his best friend’s baby sister, Becca, in the center of a powder keg situation at the infamous mobster’s home. With her life on the line, he does the only thing he can think of to save her – he pretends that she’s his fiancée, who knows nothing of his clandestine activities with the criminal enterprise, and stands as her stalwart protector.

Forced into marriage…

But Quinten never expects the mob boss to force them into marriage at gunpoint as a test of loyalty. Not to mention, the idea of her belonging to him isn’t unappealing, nor is he as averse to the prospect as he lets on. Becca, with her sweet curves and take no prisoners attitude, fascinates him, stirs him, and leaves him craving her submission. Yet his past is fraught with broken dreams and death, so he uses his friendship with her brother as a shield against his yearning to claim her as his own.

Resistance is futile…

However, circumstances soon compel Becca and Quinten to become the most unlikely allies in a deadly game of deception. Now they must depend on one another for survival. As they race to unlock the keys to breaking the case, will Quinten be able to maintain his hands-off policy with Becca? Or will he surrender to the earth-shattering passion and turn their marriage of convenience into the real deal?

Publisher’s Note: This steamy friends to lovers romance contains elements of power exchange. While it’s the third in the Crescent City Kings series, it can be enjoyed independently.

Becca searched for a potential exit. Guards were stationed in groups of two at doorways and stairwells, each guy more terrifying than the next, with hard faces that probably wouldn’t blink if she was shot dead where she stood. The further into the mansion she trod, the more Becca felt like she was heading to her own funeral. Bile threatened in the back of her throat. She hated that a part of her was impressed by the interior of the home because of the artwork on display. The paintings and sculptures were museum quality. If she wasn’t mistaken, they passed an original Renoir.

The heels of Becca’s black leather boots clicked against the hardwood flooring. Her heart thumped in time with those clicks, like a ticking clock winding down to zero. Konrad and company ushered her up a grand staircase that made the one in Gone with the Wind look cheap and insignificant. At the top, they steered her to the right, down a wide hall with glossy hardwood floors and high ceilings.

When they reached the end of the hall, the two henchmen who had joined them opened a pair of double doors that must have belonged to a Buddhist temple at one time. Becca’s clasped hands shook as she entered what amounted to a sitting room parlor with an enormous ivory marble hearth. The fire inside intended to ward off the chilly night couldn’t make the cold terror in her bones dissipate. Every piece of furniture and décor in the parlor spoke of wealth. There was a Louis XIV desk in one corner. But the room held all the warmth of a mausoleum.

“Have a seat. The boss will be with you shortly,” Konrad indicated in a bullish tone and pointed toward the chocolate Chesterfield sofas while his buddies shut the doors with a resounding thud and sealed them all inside. Sealed Becca inside. She assessed the room. Floor-to-ceiling inlaid shelves held first editions behind panes of glass. There was a vase on a pedestal that looked to be from the Ming Dynasty, or was at least an excellent reproduction. She studied her surroundings for a potential avenue of escape. The only way out would be to jump from the large crenelated windows. Two stories up, she could break something—like her neck. Only three guards were present in the room, odds that weren’t great, but left her a fighting chance.

Konrad shifted his hand to the butt of his gun until she finally complied with his order. Even if she escaped past Konrad and his two buddies, jumped out the window and didn’t break anything when she landed, the boatload of guards stationed over the grounds were far too numerous to outrun. The odds were not in her favor in making it to the gate and beyond for help.

Becca said a silent prayer at the echoing clomp of multiple footsteps approaching. Her anxiety ratcheted up to cataclysmic levels.

The double doors swung inward. Becca wasn’t sure what she’d been expecting, but it wasn’t a relatively trim man with salt and pepper hair, dressed in gray tweed slacks and a button up navy cardigan sweater over his ivory dress shirt. He looked much more like a history professor than a criminal mastermind—at least, until you looked into his eyes. They were cold, devoid of any humanity or warmth, and calculating. Rudnikov assessed her from head to toe as she rose. That stare made her feel underdressed in her jeans and Kelly-green chenille sweater. A sense of helplessness invaded her soul. The uncertainty infused by doubt that she would live through the next hour.

Rudnikov didn’t travel alone. He had four of his paid thugs guarding him. Becca skimmed her gaze over them. They were all similar in manner and form to Konrad, as if they had come off an assembly line. But it was the last man her gaze landed on who brought her up short. She kept her jaw from dropping to the floor, but just barely.

Quinten Blackthorne was a member of Anton Rudnikov’s mob team? What the hell?

Mayhem and the Marquess by Win Hollows – Spotlight and Giveaway

Daughter of an infamous murderer, Ivy Wollard now wields knives instead of needlepoint to survive in a society where no one wants her. When the Marquess of Blackbourne comes along and ruins her chance at a better life, she decides she’d rather have her toes eaten by eels than agree to his proposed scheme. There’s no way her surrender has anything to do with the mesmerizing angle of his jawline or the wicked twinkle in his eyes.

But Asher Blackbourne has a secret. He knows it’s just a matter of time until he goes mad and loses his illustrious title, so when Ivy falls into his path, he realizes he could use her to keep his house of cards from falling down. If every illicit touch between them doesn’t drive him mad first, that is.

Yet Ivy cannot escape her grisly legacy and the dark desires of her father’s admirers. What if violence runs through her veins, and no one who gets close is safe? Mayhem will descend as this rake finally falls for the enigmatic woman who might be just his brand of poison…Er, cure, of course.

“That was my favorite pen,” Blackbourne remarked in a low tone, looking at the broken quill and ink flooding the polished wood surface of his desk and nearby papers. He rose suddenly from his chair, forcing Ivy to back away a step until her derriere came up against the edge of the desk.

She gasped as his full height loomed over her. Her hands grabbed the edge of the desk as his legs pressed into her skirts.

Perhaps she had gone a bit too far.

“I liked that pen,” he purred, his hand coming up to stroke her face.

She gulped. “I like my privacy.”

“Are you going to replace my pen?”

“Are you going to un-read my letters?” she replied, trying not to stare at the way his lips moved as he spoke in the smoky voice that strummed along her nerves like a cello’s bow.

He let out a bark of laughter. “Perhaps it’s too late to stop for either one of us,” he said, and Ivy knew he spoke of things other than pen and paper.

“It’s been too late for a long time,” she breathed, the fabric of her dress chafing the puckered tips of her breasts as his chest came up against hers.

His eyes flashed as he pressed her further backwards, hands positioned flat on the desk on either side of where he had her trapped. “I’m going to ruin your dress now.”

Ivy sucked in a breath as he lifted her onto the desk, ink smearing over her skirts and the palms of her hands. She didn’t mind that outcome one bit…

Worse, her husband, Phineas, returns, expecting her to give up her faith as he has. And he won’t leave Promise Lodge without her…

But little by little, Annabelle’s determination and new forthrightness make Phineas realize his mistakes—and truly hear his wife for the first time. Meanwhile, Annabelle finds herself feeling compassion—and even renewed love—for her newly humble, more caring husband. And as Bishop Clayton’s attempt to control Promise Lodge threatens everything its residents have built, Phineas and Annabelle must work together with unshakeable courage to save their new home—and their opportunity for forever happiness.

Enjoy an Excerpt

As Annabelle Beachey gazed at the happy couple standing before Bishop Monroe Burkholder to exchange their wedding vows, she fought tears. During the four months she’d spent in an apartment at Promise Lodge, she’d become good friends with the bride, Frances Lehman, and she’d acquired a lot of respect for the groom, Preacher Marlin Kurtz. The love light on their faces shone as a testament to the devotion that had grown between them during their summertime courtship—a brilliant example of how God worked out His purpose through the lives of those who kept His faith, even after they’d been widowed.

Annabelle sighed with the rightness of it all. The women around her dabbed at their eyes as Preacher Marlin repeated his vows in an endearingly confident voice, gazing at Frances as though she were the only woman in the world. Folks here were still in awe because Marlin had bought back all the furnishings Frances had consigned to an auction in May, thinking she had to sell everything to get by because her first husband hadn’t left her with much.

My husband didn’t leave me with much, either. He just left me.

If you’ve never heard of me, should you read my book?

New authors tend to believe their books are for everybody, but a glance at a bestseller list like The New York Times indicates otherwise. Of the books listed there, only a fraction appeal to any reader because topics are so diverse.

A Struggle for Independence takes place in 1916, Ireland, so if you’re interested in Ireland, The Great War, or European history, you should find the Easter Rising exciting. The book is set against the backdrop of Ireland’s sweeping green vistas, key sites in Dublin along the River Liffey, and the majestic beauty of the Wicklow Mountains. It is a stark contrast to the busyness, fast pace of today’s world. As you walk with the main character past the meadows of horses or visit the gatehouse built above the water and listen to the gurgling of the brook, you should feel less stressed, the heart rate lowered, the aromas of an Irish morning tickling your nose.

The book is seen through the eyes of Lady Independence Mather. If you’re interested in female leads or watching a woman blossom from a repressed and lonely wife in an arranged marriage to an independent businesswoman, you’ll find this book fascinating. And if you enjoy romance, especially with Irishmen, you’ll enjoy it. Penny’s life changes when she meets Nicky Bowers, an architect and an Irish rebel helping to hide weapons for the Easter Rising. She quickly falls in love with the charming, attentive man, and she finds herself in the midst of the rebellion as it begins.

Come along with Penny as she stands at a crossroads between her comfortable but emotionally unfulfilling life with a British loyalist, and an uncertain future with the man she loves. The Easter Rising’s success is not guaranteed, and if she is captured, she could be imprisoned or executed for treason. There are historically accurate twists and turns. Which decisions would you make if you were in her shoes?

It is always a gamble reading someone’s work for the first time, so take a moment to read the reviews of this book or others I have written at GoodReads or Amazon. I discover new authors every week, some of whom have become my favorites, when only a year before, I had never heard of them.

Ten Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me and My Books

I’ve been writing epic and urban fantasy for over a decade, and I’ve been a guest at a lot of conventions, logged a lot of panel time, posted a lot out on social media, and I’m pretty active in fandom. But I’m betting there are at least a few things you might not know.

#10 I can play the piano. Not as well as one might expect given how long I took lessons, but tolerably so.

#9 My day job before I started writing full-time was running marketing departments.

#8 I have an MBA in Marketing, which also explains why I’ve always been very involved with helping to get my books into the world.

#7 My first paying job was as a graveyard-shift DJ at a local radio station.

#6 I like roller coasters and theme parks.

#5 I love Chinese food.

#4 I also write urban fantasy MM paranormal romance as Morgan Brice

#3 All of my urban fantasy, as Gail or Morgan, crosses over, so the characters all know each other.

#2 Assassins of Landria is my fourth epic fantasy series, and it’s designed to be different with shorter books and more humor for a ‘buddy flick’ feel!

#1 I can promise there will be six books in the Assassins of Landria series, since the audio contracts have already been signed!

Buddy flick epic fantasy! The second in the Assassins of Landria series from the award-winning, bestselling author of Scourge: A Novel of Darkhurst and The Chronicles Of The Necromancer books!

Wandering mystic Yefim Makary, known to his followers as the ‘Witch Lord’, disappeared before he could be accused of inciting dissent against King Kristoph. His supporters among the disenchanted aristocrats who weren’t arrested have fled or died by their own hand. The king is happy to put the matter behind him. Yet Burke, the commander of the elite King’s Shadows, doesn’t believe the threat is over, and he assigns his two most troublesome, rule-breaking—and successful—assassins to ferret out the real threat and put a stop to Makary’s plots.

Joel “Ridge” Breckinridge and Garrett “Rett” Kennard rose through the ranks of the Landrian army together, from teenaged conscripts to seasoned fighters. Together, they became the most feared team of assassins in Landria, surviving longer that most in their profession by virtue of excellent fighting skills, legendary bravado, peerless strategy, and an uncanny synchronicity.

As the threads of a new plot come together revealing disloyalty among the priests and generals, Ridge and Rett once again find themselves on the run, hoping they and their allies can figure out the Witch Lord’s latest scheme before it costs them their lives—and the king his throne.

The trick, when setting off gunpowder, was to be far enough away.
Ridge had never been good at that part.
He’d almost reached the embankment when he heard the shot from Rett’s matchlock. Knowing what was about to happen next, Ridge dove into the ravine, taking his chances with brambles and thickets over flying rocks and shattered glass.

Behind him, the country manor exploded in a fireball as Rett’s shot touched off the barrels of gunpowder on its roof. That would bring down the ceiling and blow the bombers on the roof sky high while trapping the traitors inside, where they’d either be killed by the blast or buried in the rubble for the king’s guards to collect.

Ridge grunted as he tumbled over roots and rocks, tucking his arms over his face and trusting his leather cuirass to take the brunt of the hits. Even so, rock dust settled like snow over the whole area, and small bits of stone pelted like hail.

To keep it all official, Ridge had nailed the letter of marque to a tree in front of the manor, after he had ensured that no one but the smugglers were inside the abandoned country house. The smugglers—and their rivals on the roof—were already in the process of setting explosives when Ridge and Rett arrived to carry out the assassination. That was a bonus, killing two sets of troublemakers in one swoop and without the personal danger of getting close enough to throw a knife or slit a throat.

He trusted Rett to stay in position, where he would be able to pick off stragglers from his vantage point high in a sturdy tree. Ridge dragged himself to his feet, brushed off the worst of the dirt, and climbed back up the slope. Once he got to the top of the embankment, he would have a good view to spot anyone who might have escaped the explosion and eluded Rett’s aim.

“Damn,” he muttered when he reached the top and saw the results.

Together they recover timeworn records from deep in the ruins of a dead Mahar city, hoping to use knowledge of Pellucidar’s former reptilian overlords to jumpstart the Gridley Wave. THE FIRST UNIVERSE OF ITS KIND

A century before the term “crossover” became a buzzword in popular culture, Edgar Rice Burroughs created the first expansive, fully cohesive literary universe. Coexisting in this vast cosmos was a pantheon of immortal heroes and heroines–Tarzan of the Apes, Jane Clayton, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Carson Napier, and David Innes being only the best known among them. In Burroughs’ 80-plus novels, their epic adventures transported them to the strange and exotic worlds of Barsoom, Amtor, Pellucidar, Caspak, and Va-nah, as well as the lost civilizations of Earth and even realms beyond the farthest star. Now the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe expands in an all-new series of canonical novels written by today’s talented authors!

“My liege, let us take you to your quarters,” Lisant Or said, moving to the jong’s side. “If one of our nearby towns is under attack, there may be a danger to Sanara as well. We must get you to safety.”

Taman was having none of it. “Nonsense,” he said. “Carson, can you get us to Jovita swiftly?”

“Absolutely,” I said. Jovita was one of the closest settlements to Sanara, but it still lay nestled near a valley some half an hour away by air. “The anotar we arrived in should still be flight-ready out on the landing strip,” I went on, “and my personal craft is waiting inside the hangar near that. We could take a few people with us, but not many.” My anotar was designed to hold only a pilot and one passenger, though I knew we could squeeze in one more safely. The other anotar was a little more forgiving; meant to hold four in comfort, it might allow for another two or three passengers before the added weight would be a detriment to lift and velocity.

The jong said, “I will go with you and Duare.”

“Very well,” I replied. Unlike Lisant Or, I knew better than to suggest that the jong remain behind in safety.

My Take on Critique Groups by Sigrid Macdonald – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Sigrid Macdonald will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

My Take on Critique Groups
What is my take on critique groups? Frankly, I have ambivalent feelings about critique groups. I am a big fan of writing groups in general, and I belonged to one for many years when I lived in Ottawa, Ontario. It was a very supportive group that met downtown, and the people were extremely knowledgeable and resourceful. They knew all about independent bookstores, where to have book signings, how to get your book in on consignment, which were the best publishers for your genre, etc. My book group had a wide diversity of ages, races, and life experiences as well as different amounts of time in the writing world; some people were newbies, and others were seasoned journalists. By and large, I found that group to be very helpful and made several good friends there. But it was not a critique group. People did not read each other’s material and provide feedback.

I have been in a small critique group, and I didn’t have the best experience. In fact, I remember one woman in particular reading a scene in one of my fiction stories and looking at me directly in the eye and saying, “So” (followed by a long sigh), “was that the best you could do?” Hello! It’s a good thing that I had been writing for years before she said that, and I had a fairly confident sense of my own material. Otherwise I might have gone home and cried all night.

So, I think that in choosing a critique group, it’s important to find people who will provide constructive criticism and do not bring their own egos or agendas into the meeting. Constructive criticism often involves telling a fellow reader what didn’t go as well as it could have and providing the fix. For example, “I really liked your character Jack, especially when he became a bully, which was unexpected, but I never got a real sense of how that came about. What happened to Jack for him to be so cruel? Perhaps you could take a bit of time to develop a back story for him.”

For many years, I was a member of Toastmasters International, and they used to tell us to provide feedback “sandwich style” — on top of the sandwich was a compliment. Inside the sandwich was what you really wanted to say; this might have been negative, but it was framed positively and included the solution to the problem because without that, it would have been unhelpful. And finally the last comment, the bottom of the sandwich, if you will, was another compliment or kind comment that would make the writer want to continue with the book or story. It has to be genuine though. You can’t make up something nice to say about somebody’s writing if it isn’t real. But for me, the most important part of providing critiques and receiving critiques is that they have to be helpful. If they are hurtful or discouraging, that is pointless.

Finding Lisa is a character driven story about a quirky Canadian woman named Tara who is about to turn 40. She dreads the thought. Everything is going wrong in her life from her stale marriage to her boring job to her hopeless crush on a 24-year-old guy. Then Lisa disappears and the search is on to find her.

All the carts were taken at the supermarket on Tuesday. I found one off to the side of the vegetable aisle. It had a defective wheel, which resulted in me almost overturning a display of cantaloupes. The cart was also enormous. No doubt this was a deliberate ploy on the part of the supermarket to encourage excess shopping.

“I feel as though I’m driving a school bus,” I announced to the frail, pale orange-haired woman to my left, who was squeezing the small, unappetizing looking cantaloupes.

She smiled faintly and nodded. I wondered how she had the strength to push the heavy cart through the long aisles of the grocery store at her age.

“Mum, I’ll go with you to one of those Women against Rape meetings if you want?” Devon said to my astonishment, his voice rising at the end of his sentence. “There’s only one condition. You have to watch 8 Mile with me.”

“8 Mile? Isn’t that the movie based on the book by Stephen King?”

“Nah, you’re thinking about The Green Mile,” Devon replied. “8 Mile is the story of a rapper in Detroit. It’s based on the life of Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers. Eminem even stars in it,” he said with increasing enthusiasm.

“I think it’ll give you a better idea of where he’s coming from. You know, you’re always talking about these girls who’ve been, like, abused and what horrible lives they’ve had. You even feel bad about boys who were taken advantage of by priests or their hockey coaches. So why don’t you have any sympathy for Marshall? His mother was abusive. She was mean to him, and she did drugs! Also, she, like, gave him something called Munchkins syndrome,” Devon added uncertainly.

“Munchausen syndrome?” I asked, trying to picture the tough guy with the tattoos and bad attitude as a small child with a manipulative and controlling mother.

“Yeah, that sounds right. She made him feel sick when he was totally healthy. And, Mum, I know you would respect the way Em felt about his little brother, Nathan. He, like, didn’t wanna leave him alone in the house with his mother when he finally split from Detroit. He’s also really keen about his daughter, Hailie Jade. He talks about her all the time in his songs and on TV.”

I pushed the buttons on the radio. The Steve Miller band was singing, “Time keeps on slipping, slipping into the future.” I had a sense of motion. The car was moving forward, and with every traffic light I passed, I was moving farther away from Lisa and our routine evenings at the ByTowne Theatre. The rest of us were going ahead, and Lisa had been left behind. I wanted to go back, not just to last Thursday night, but to my university days, so I could live my life all over again.

I wanted to be sixteen or twenty-six again, making decisions based on what I knew now. So many lost opportunities. How had I managed to completely screw up my life? I’d done everything wrong except that I hadn’t become a street prostitute or a serial murderer. Too late for the former—who would want me? But there was still time for the latter.

About the Author: Originally from New Jersey, Sigrid Macdonald lived for almost thirty years in Ottawa, Ontario, and currently resides in Weston, Florida. She has been a freelance writer for years. Her works have appeared in The Globe and Mail newspaper; the Women’s Freedom Network Newsletter; the American magazine Justice Denied; The Toastmaster; and the Anxiety Disorders Association of Ontario Newsletter. Her first book, Getting Hip: Recovery from a Total Hip Replacement, was published in 2004. Her second book, Be Your Own Editor, followed in 2010. Although Finding Lisa is written in first person, Macdonald only resembles her character in the sense that she once had a neurotic fixation on her hair, and she has always been called by the wrong name; instead of being called Sigrid, people have called her Susan, Sharon, Astrid, Ingrid and, her personal favorite, Siri.

Macdonald is a social activist who has spent decades working on the seemingly disparate issues of women’s rights and wrongful convictions; she has worked at the Women’s Center at Ramapo College of New Jersey and Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, and was a member of AIDWYC, The Association in Defense of the Wrongly Convicted. She owns an editing company called Book Magic. Sigrid is a public speaker and a member of Mothers against Drunk Driving, Ottawa Independent Writers, the American Association of University Women, and the Editors’ Association of Canada.

Balancing Life and Writing

The main question everyone asks when I tell them that I’ve written a book and it’s getting published, is “how on earth did you have time?” To be honest I never really know how to answer. They inevitably move on to enquire how long it took to write and I’m not sure how to answer that either. Do they mean how long it took to write the first draft? How long it took to rewrite the book over and over until I felt cautiously able to let someone else read it? Or how long it took to get to the point where it was accepted for publication? Also I’m not sure whether to count from the date that I wrote the very first words or not, because there were many fits and starts along the way. Should I try to work out how long I spent on the book in writing hours, rather than how many years from first words to publication?

People wonder how I manage to write alongside my career in medicine, but they also ask how I fit it in with being a mum as well. I’m not too sure whether they would ask the same question if I were a man, I suspect not. However I do find that it’s difficult to balance writing with family life. When I’m not at work I’m mostly around my husband and kids and it’s difficult to write during those times because there are a lot of distractions, but also I feel guilty if I’m sat typing away and not interacting with them.

I started writing as an outlet and an escape, so I don’t want it to become a ‘chore’ that I have to cram in. What works for me is to write on my day off when I’m alone and the children are at school. However I have to manage my time carefully in order to achieve this, making sure that other tasks are fitted in elsewhere and adapting the day to make room for writing. You have to prioritise the things that you enjoy doing and that bring you peace of mind, in order to maintain a balance in all aspects of life.

She is an ‘Impervious’, a rare human with powers that can be used against the malevolent.

When Amber’s latest mission takes her back to the UK to work with her close companion Valentino, she meets his old colleague Hayden Knight. Hayden is infamous to Amber as the man who betrayed their organization and abandoned her friend Valentino in the past. She dislikes Hayden instantly, and his arrogant, cold demeanour does nothing to aid this.

Amber and Hayden are forced to work together on The Organization’s most important mission to date, and they must put aside their differences to take down the menace that threatens the very existence of their group. Amber must put her trust in Hayden, but is she impervious to love?

Victoria smiled, tossing her long blonde hair over her shoulder. She lifted her hand, turned her palm upward and brought her fingers toward herself in an invitation to the fight. Her insolent gesture had the desired effect. He growled, and in a blind rage ran in her direction. She had already pulled back her arm and, as he reached her, she smashed her fist into his face, sending him hurtling away toward the tree line, where he crashed into a thick trunk, cracking it in the process. Within a split second Victoria was upon him, pinning him in place. She glanced over at Amber, who was still hidden a few feet away, and nodded.

Amber was by Victoria’s side quickly, even though, unlike her partner, she wasn’t capable of vampire speed. The man’s black, dead-looking eyes met hers, and registered her human form. A sneer appeared on his face as he started to thrash in an attempt to escape Victoria’s grip and get at Amber. Before he could gain any purchase, Amber closed in, grabbing hold of the man’s head. He screamed in agony, and Victoria stepped away while Amber did her work.

A few seconds later, silence fell. Moonlight shone on the fir-lined clearing, devoid of any presence except a mound of ash sitting beside a cracked tree trunk.

Character Creation

In the Finding You Series, character creation was definitely modeled after people in my life. My two daughters were inspiration for the young child, Gavin. He has the imagination side of my youngest mixed with the active, athletic side of my oldest. I wanted Lila to be the epitome of my closest high school friends. She is fiercely loyal to her best friend Camryn, and has no problem going to bat for her in every situation. Todd and Tara were created after two people that hurt me while I was in college. I had to really channel those years of my life to accurately portray their betrayal. Cole, being the rock, the fixer, is truly how I see my husband. He’s so haunted by his own ghosts, but somehow puts Camryn before all of that to make sure she is happy. Camryn’s strength reminds me of so many women in my life who I have admired and aspired to be like. She is a fantastic mom, and puts family first which are values I live by in my own life.

Creating my characters after these people in my life really helped me connect with them. I was able to feel their emotions and it helped to make the story realistic. I can’t lie when I say writing in a few of my past enemies gave me a bit of redemption. As, I move into a new work in progress, I can tell you my character creation is taking the same path. Write what you know, and I sure am doing that!

Cole Stevens thought he was finally given a second chance in life. With the woman he always loved now by his side, an adopted son who felt like his own since the day he met him, and a baby on the way, Cole could finally see his forever. And then his past showed up on his doorstep, threatening to take it all away.

Now forced to relive painful memories and bring dark secrets to light, Cole begins a downward spiral that leads him back to the place he spent years trying to escape. As the pain of his past collides with the present, he finds himself lost again, fighting for his family’s future. How can he find the way back in time for his forever to be saved?

Footsteps approach. I feel a light touch, and then hands gently finding their way around my waist. Camryn lays her head on my shoulder and squeezes. Gavin stands up next to me on the other side of the bench and links his arms around my neck.

“Daddy, are you mad at me?” he asks.

I lift my head, pull Gavin onto my lap, and tilt his chin toward my face. “You listen now. I could never be mad at you for talking about the baby. You will be the best big brother anyone could ask for. So, you talk about the baby all you want.” I lift my thumb. “Thumbs-up to the best big brother in the world.”

He touches his thumb to mine. “Thumbs-up to the best daddy in the world.”

As the pain melts away, Camryn squeezes my waist and kisses my shoulder. “Are you ready to go, best-daddy-in-the-world?”

I gently kiss her lips and assure her, “With you, I’m ready for anything.” The meaning of my words run deeper than the family dinner awaiting us at home.

She stands up from the bench and turns toward me. “Let’s start small then.” She reaches her hand out. “One step toward home?”

The distant roar of the waves slamming the shore, and the strength in Camryn’s simple words, fortify my resolve. I reach out to my wife, my lifeline, and grasp her hand, knowing she is the only one who possesses the power to save me.
