Doctoral student Hannah Wagganer has big dreams of leaving her hometown of Glen Arbor behind to teach at a large university. That is, until Jasper Morgan, the new mail carrier, arrives in town. Not only does he send Hannah’s heart racing, but he creates an instant bond with her cat, Jingles.

While Hannah is busy preparing for the church’s candlelight Christmas Eve service and running the family store, she keeps bumping into Jasper—right in front of the prying eyes of the locals, who suspect there’s more going on than business as usual.

But then, a series of unexpected blessings occurs that changes the town’s focus: first, an anonymous donor pays to have the church furnace repaired, and then other locals suddenly find solutions to their problems. Is it coincidental, or the work of a secret angel?

Hannah paused briefly, hitching a ragged breath. Examining the ground, she spotted tracks from some of the local wildlife. One pair led in the same direction as Jingles’.

“Haven’t you learned not to chase the critters?” she mumbled, tramping forward along the trail. The faint sound of twigs snapping just ahead caught her attention. She was getting closer. Two minutes — and ten frostbitten fingers — later she found Jingles perched on a tree stump by Lake Michigan. Evidently, whatever he’d been chasing had gotten away.

Hannah scooped the orange tabby into her arms and swiped at the snow clinging to his fur and the small red bells attached to his collar. Soft purring cut through the cold air, melting her frustration.

“Come on, let’s get you home,” she said, trudging back toward the shop. Jingles snuggled against her chest as they crossed the church parking lot and climbed the wooden staircase leading into Deer Crossings, the store owned by her parents.

Creeeeak.

Hannah jolted to a halt, swallowing hard. Footsteps overhead in the apartment warned her it wasn’t a customer.

“We have an uninvited guest,” she whispered to Jingles. The cat meowed in response and jumped down, running in the direction of the storeroom. Hannah tiptoed over to the counter and retrieved one of her dad’s golf clubs.

Creeeeak.

She hefted it to her shoulder, holding it like a baseball bat as the creaking sounds on the stairs grew closer. A large shadow appeared at the bottom of the steps. She gulped and swung the golf club, striking the banister.

“Put that thing away before you hurt yourself,” the stranger said, stepping into the light streaming through the bay windows. He adjusted the mail bag slung over his shoulder. “Do you always leave your front door wide open?”

Hannah lowered the golf club, staring into a pair of blue eyes matching the lake.

Times Change and We Change with Them by Bethany Askew – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Times Change and We Change with Them

It was my son’s birthday the other day. I remember the day he was born as clearly as if it was yesterday. And yet it seems to me I was such a different person then. This led me to think about whether we are indeed different people at different stages of our lives. Certainly that’s what the author William Boyd thinks, and writes about in his novel “Any Human Heart”, which was brilliantly dramatised for television.

It’s not just the fact that I was so much younger when my son was born that makes me believe I was so different. Of course I liked different music at the time. I can remember the radio was constantly tuned to Radio 1—I can even remember the song that was number one at the time: “Seasons in the Sun”. And I had different tastes in clothes, dictated by fashion not comfort. But it’s more than that: I was married to a different person. I had different friends. A different outlook on life. I was more impatient. Less satisfied with life. Striving to do more, be more.

I see my life, so far, in four very different stages: first, my childhood, growing up with my parents and brother and sister. Secondly, my first marriage and the birth of my son, looking after him, whilst trying to forge a career for myself. Thirdly, my present marriage, the trauma of divorce, taking on my step-children, establishing a successful career. And finally, the present stage: the children grown up, my parents gone, no longer working full-time—a time to do the things I always wanted to do, like being a writer.

At each stage of my life, I feel I was a different person: child, sister, lover, wife, mother, step-mother, career woman. I see myself reacting differently to things that happened depending on where I was living, who my friends were, who I was married to, which children I was looking after, where I was working, who I was working with.

There are things I did in the past that I wouldn’t do now. Like everyone, I have my regrets. I look back and think, “I was too impetuous, too selfish, I didn’t appreciate my parents and what they did for me.” But I’m still the person who did those things, it’s just that I view them now through the lens of life, with the experience that life has taught me. My basic personality hasn’t changed. I’m still the same person, with the same strengths and weaknesses. It’s just that I’ve learned, I hope, to curb some of my excesses: my impetuosity, for example, and my quick temper. That is what life teaches us.

When Carly Spurway is mistaken for old school friend Caroline Westminster, she has the chance to re-invent her life.

As the lines between fantasy and reality become blurred, the web of deceit Carly weaves around herself for protection threatens instead to trap her.

But what has happened in her past to make Carly want to escape? And is Caroline’s life as perfect as Carly thinks it is?

This story explores how well we really know the people we have relationships with; the different versions of the truth we tell ourselves and others; and the impact of the past on the present.

“I know you, don’t I?”

“No,” she says, “you must be mistaken…”

“Caroline,” he says firmly. “Caroline Westminster…”

She shakes her head but he’s seen the flash of recognition in her eyes.

“I used to teach you,” he says. “At East Devon College. Maths. You were very good…”

He’s older, of course. His hair is greying and there are laughter lines around his eyes, but there’s no mistaking him. This is her moment to correct him.

“I’m not Caroline,” she should say. “I’m Carly. Carly Spurway.” but the moment’s gone and she finds herself shaking hands with him automatically. “Mr. Exton…” she says politely.

“Mark, please.” He laughs. “What’re you doing here?”

She glances around at the pictures on the walls.

“Not here, literally.” He laughs again and she can see now that he’s a bit nervous. “I mean, here in Taunton?”

“I live here. Well, only just. I’ve been here a few weeks. You?”

“Oh, we’ve been here for years. I’m teaching at Wyvern’s now. The sixth form college.”

The ‘we’ isn’t lost on her. Married, obviously. Well, of course, he would be by now. He must be, what, early forties? He was probably only a few years older than them when they were in the sixth form, though he seemed so much more mature, not long out of university; the good-looking Maths teacher that all the girls fancied and all the boys wanted to emulate. He’s still good-looking, despite the slightly greying hair. More confident now, though. Slim, athletic-looking. Clearly he looks after himself. He senses her examining him and his dark eyes hold hers. Embarrassed, she looks back at the painting.

Someone pushes past them, jogging his elbow so that his red wine spills slightly over the back of his hand. He bends his head to lick it off and says, “It’s getting crowded in here. Why don’t we go through to the bar?”

“I’ve got to go,” she says quickly, glancing at her watch for authenticity.

“Oh, please,” he says. “Just a few minutes. I don’t often bump into former students. You’ve all moved away…”

She knows she shouldn’t. This goes against everything she’s moved here for. But he doesn’t know who she is. He thinks she’s someone else. She doesn’t have to see him again.

Where Do Ideas Come From? by PD Alleva – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Where do ideas come from?

The cosmos. Probably from one of the planets surrounding Orion’s belt and the otherworldly beings that manifest on those planets. Food for thought I hope.

As you can tell I write science fiction novels. I’m also intrigued by alien lore, books, theories, and of course Ancient Aliens. I’m an avid reader of just about anything and everything, although I prefer intelligent reads that pack a punch with fantastic storytelling, excellent prose, and incredible character depth. I sneer every time traditional publishing markets another regurgitated storyline. Seems like there’s a lot of those in today’s market.

But where do ideas really come from?

I do believe whole-heartedly that good ideas are a result of an overactive imagination that continues to spin tales whether or not the recipient actually manifests those ideas into a book. In my younger and more vulnerable years (yes that’s a quote from The Great Gatsby) I would tell ghost stories to my two younger brothers every time the lights went out because my parents couldn’t afford the electrical bill, which, unfortunately happened often. Although I’m grateful for those times, telling stories is the best way to transport the mind to a different place, universe, or dimension. There are no limits to any one story other than the limits the author chooses to incorporate. Keep stretching the imagination and demolish the bounds of reality, that’s what I say.

But ideas can come from just about anything and everything. A song, a situation or circumstance, a movie or book that inspires the creative muse, even philosophy, spiritual concepts, scientific advancements or theories, and of course an interest in quantum physics, which breaks down all barriers that traditional science seeks to turn into reality.

I enjoy stretching the limits of my own imagination, perhaps, someday; those thoughts will each Orion’s belt (if they haven’t already).

“It’s in the blood, dear,” said Ellen, one of the women Sandy shared time and space with, her skin worn by age, hard labor, and days spent under the sun. Blotches, liver spots and creases led the observer to the eyes. One dark, the other a cataract milky white and she always wore a dark shawl draped over the head and shoulders. Sandy was afraid of Ellen, she reminded Sandy of a gypsy or witch from a fairy-tale.

“Come again?” said Sandy, her eyes shifting from soldier to Ellen to soldier then back to Ellen.

Ellen had cut herself transferring a wood bucket filled with rice to add to an already large trough of buckets. A thick wood splinter pinned in the bottom of her palm dripping with a thick stream of blood. She turned to Sandy raising the bloodied palm and caught a drop of blood in her unwounded hand.

“The blood dear,” said Ellen. “All magic comes from the blood.”

Sandy cringed at the sight; she’d always been squeamish. Her stomach bumped, blood curled. Magic, Sandy thought. If only magic was real. How wonderful would that be? Sandy understood she was naïve, the result of an isolated childhood and her parents’ death when she was ten years old. Not that they had taught the young Sandy about the world she lived in either. They’d kept her under lock and key, never so much as offering a glimpse or advice on the outside world. They were always so cryptic with their explanations, living in an abundant and overgrown mansion as if luxury were a childhood friend. Sure there were plenty of rooms for a child to explore but as time went by those rooms seemed more like a prison than a home.

Years of neglect, isolation and secrets were as torturous as physical suffering. And she was tired of secrets. She wanted to know truth. Truth was like a blanket that keeps you warm in the coldest winter.

“The blood, Sandy,” said Ellen who clenched her fist around those crimson droplets, shaking her hand in front of her face. “All is in the blood.”

A deceptively complicated retrieval throws Nicole into London’s criminal underworld

Travel to London and retrieve Abigail Fletcher, a 17-year-old in a study abroad program at the prestigious King’s College in London. The assignment sounds simple enough.

But Abigail’s return is put on indefinite hold when she’s charged with the murder of her boyfriend, a former student at King’s. Nicole believes Abigail has been framed, but the victim’s tight- knit circle of friends and relatives are most unwilling to talk to an American detective. Further complicating the case, is Abigail’s defiant and uncooperative demeanor.

As evidence stacks up against Abigail, Nicole discovers that she herself has become the next target. Nicole’s first solo case abroad as a private detective has just turned a lot deadlier than she ever anticipated.

With her phone pressed to her ear, Abigail started down the stairs. Two men entered the building and started climbing toward her. They were dressed alike, in jeans and black hoodies with the hoods pulled up. She stood aside to let them pass, but when they reached her, they stopped. Meanwhile Nicole had answered. Abigail turned away from the men to focus on her call. One of the men snatched the phone out of her hand.

“Let go!” she said. “Give it back!”

As she fought to wrestle the phone away from him, he punched her in the face. A moment later, he drove his fist into her stomach. As she doubled over in pain, she felt the sharp stab of a needle go into her arm.

“Dr. Olivia Chasen,” Santa’s jolly baritone popped her mental fuzzy bubble.

She stopped as she struggled to whirl around. “Me?” She touched her chest with a dramatic flourish she didn’t know she possessed.

A powerful spotlight illuminated her; its heat burned her already flushed face.

She pressed a clammy palm to her chest. “How do you know my name?” The haze in her mind was paralyzing all cognitive function.

“My dear girl,” Santa chuckled, “you should know by now that Santa knows everything and everyone,” he tapped an index finger to his temple.

Santa Claus turned to address the waiting line. “Girls, Boys, Moms, Dads, everyone, if you don’t mind waiting for a brief moment, I’d like for Olivia,” he pointed a white gloved finger at her, “to please come up here on stage, and tell me what she wants for Christmas.”

She stood dumbfounded as the audience and the people in line clapped and chanted her name, “Olivia! Olivia! Olivia!”

Oh no! What was she going to do? She couldn’t possibly go up onto that stage. She was far too shy to address a theater full of people.

But if she didn’t go that would be so unexciting and so like the old Olivia.

But she wasn’t unexciting! She was the new Olivia, and she was exciting! And she wanted to have fun! Correction: She was determined to have fun. Besides, she’d never see these people—her fellow passengers—ever again.

About the Author:

October 25, 1814, Marsh House, London

Miss Anna Marsh was in her parlor reading, when her maid, Lizzy, entered and held out a grubby piece of paper.

“Came from my brother, Kev, this morning,” Lizzy said.

Anna nodded, took the note, and opened it. She perused the contents then closed her eyes.

“I’m going to have to find a way to convince Mamma to allow me to remove to Marsh Hill before the Little Season has ended. Though I cannot do anything until after Lady Phoebe’s wedding.”

“That bad, miss?” her maid asked, screwing up her face. “You might have a time of it. I heard Lady Marsh was planning to go to some country house next week.”

Anna sighed. Ever since her brother Harry’s death, Mamma had become difficult. “She probably expects me to go with her.” Anna shrugged. “Well I cannot. Someone has been sniffing around Thanport. I don’t like the sound of it.” Anna rose and walked over to her mahogany writing desk. She opened a drawer. Eschewing the neat stack of elegant pressed paper, she pulled out a piece of the distinctly rougher type. “I’ll write Kev and tell him to lay low until I can get there.”

She sealed the message and handed it to Lizzy. “Make sure this goes out to-day, even if you have to take it yourself.”

“Yes, miss.”

Anna pinched her upper nose. “I do hope this is not going to make our lives even more complicated.”

“What do you think that other man wants?” Lizzy asked.

“I don’t know.” Anna shook her head. “But I have a feeling whatever it is will do us no good. I’m going to Mamma and try to talk her around. I do wish she and Papa could settle their differences.”

Lizzy nodded. “It does make things a bit more difficult.”

“That it does,” Anna said, smiling grimly.

Dealing With Criticism by Bernadette Marie – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Bernadette Marie will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Dealing With Criticism

The author’s journey is filled with criticism. It starts with our own words that play in our head, then we willingly hand over our work to an editor and beta readers, and then we face the sharp lashing of critics when they hand in reviews.

I’ve been in this game for a decade, and I’ve only been successful since I stopped criticising my own work. I write for me, and I’m blessed that my words resonate with others. However, remembering that I write for my own joy and my own therapy, it keeps me from criticising myself.

Very early on in my career, I was handed an amazing editor, and to this day I credit her with making me the author I am now. Looking back, as a publisher and editor myself, I would have turned away my work too. There was a great need for growth, and she walked me through it with kid gloves and gentle words. But I’ve had the harsh sting of words from those who judged my work. They sent me things like, “If I bought you a box of commas would you bother to use them?” and “I hate your character so much I would never buy you.” These are the harsh words that attack you right to your soul, but what you have to remember is they didn’t do their job by telling you things like this. It always made me wonder what was wrong with them, since their delivery was so hateful, not what was wrong with me. No, as a judge in some contest, they’re not paid or anything of the sort, but they too somewhere are being fed this kind of criticism, and I remember that now–I laughed at it then. I combat their ways by making sure that if I’m asked to critique someone’s work I’m honest, and kind. It goes a long way.

As for reviews, I deal with that criticism by not reading them. Well, not often. Usually a good review will come straight to me. If someone has something nice to say about you, they want you to know it. However, there is a lot of room for bad reviews, and I figure reviews are for the reader not for me. And think about it, how many times have you looked at a review of something and thought, “well, they hate it, but I really want to try this.” Or maybe you read a review and think, “that person has other problems.”

Criticism is all around us, and if we don’t learn to take it in and digest it a little, we will forever walk around worried about the world around us and what it will do to attack us next. Keep writing for yourself. Be willing to grow when properly critiqued, but know when a hurtful word is just that.

Kennedy Devereaux, owner of Kennedy Devereaux Designs, is a sight to behold in her signature pink colors, accented with custom designed jewelry. Intriguing enough that Joel Kingsley, the man building the new business next door, can’t help but keep coming around, just to get to know the woman in the designer clothes. Pink doors, crystal light fixtures, white shelves. Joel cupped his hands around his eyes to get a better look at the feminine interior of the store he stood in front of. Kennedy Devereaux Designs, the lettering on the door said. Costume jewelry, purses, and a few pieces of clothing were elegantly displayed on uncluttered shelves. He could see a small sitting area toward the back of the store with white chairs on a plush pink rug.

When he stepped back from the door, he inhaled. Could he even smell the store and all of its femininity?

“Can I help you?” A soft voice had him turning to see a woman, as feminine as the store, standing behind him.

She was the smell—sweet and floral. Soft golden hair framed a delicate face, and her lipstick matched the soft pastel pink of the doors he’d been looking through. Sharp blue eyes watched him as he stared at her.

Joel Kingsley was no idiot around women, but this one seemed to render him speechless.

Colt Anderson is burned out. Every part of his daily life has become a tedious chore. He cannot remember the last time he took a day off or, better yet, felt a woman’s willing surrender. And it’s just his luck that on his first day off in ages, he runs into a sexy squatter on his property, never expecting that single interaction would alter the very fabric of his world.

Still, he cannot seem to stay away from the sultry scientist, Avery. Colt feels bad for her, worries that she is running from something, and decides to cover her stay at the ranch. After all, he owns the place and has plenty of cash. Although that tiny little detail is a secret he plans on keeping to himself. It is addictive having a woman look in his direction and not see dollar signs for a change.

Because when Avery casts those goddess eyes his way, he’s just a man, a man she craves and submits to body and soul, like he’s her man, and his longing for her has him tied up in knots. With trouble and danger drawn to her like magnets, Avery pulls out his protective, dominant nature. The woman needs a keeper, and he’s the perfect man for the job.

Now he has less than two weeks to convince her to stay, to make her fall for him before she discovers he’s rich. But will she hate him when she discovers his deception?

Tank snorted and tossed his head, breaking Colt out of his somber reverie.

“What’s up, boy? Smell something?” That’s when he noticed that the daylight had darkened considerably.

The wind that had been a gentle, humid, summer breeze now whipped tumultuously through the trees. He glanced up and his stomach dropped. Shit.

Dark clouds advanced on a warpath across the sky. Bright flashes of lightning arced across the heavens. And a deep rumble of thunder crashed, increasing in sound and tenor as the storm barreled into the area.

A midafternoon squall was common at this time of year. They could also be deadly this high up. There was a cabin nearby, one of the higher elevation getaways that Colt knew was vacant at the present time. Without a second to lose, he veered Tank off the path, and plodded toward the back-country road. He prayed that they would make it before the storm unleashed its fury in earnest.

Tank sensed his urgency with the approaching tempest, and increased his pace.

Luckily, the cabins all had a small barn with two stalls inside that were attached on the side, for visitors who brought their own horses with them for the trails and didn’t want to pay to stable them at the main barn. He’d get Tank settled out of the elements and would then chill out in the cabin while the storm raged. He might be spending a night up here after all. It could be exactly what he needed. He had a satellite phone in his bag in case of emergencies. The cabins were stocked with wood for the fireplace. And while all he had was a sandwich and water, he’d make do with what he had. At least the house keys in his saddlebag also had master keys for the ranch. Directly inside each barn door was a small lockbox on the wall that held a key to the cabin. The lockboxes were all keyed the same for maintenance. Since so many of their cabins were quite a way from the main hub, it was easier when they were on calls to be able to head directly to the next cabin and not have to worry about whether they had a key to enter.

When they were about an eighth of a mile out from the cabin, the rain began to fall in thick, heavy sheets. Lightning flashed. Thunder boomed. Tank snorted, tossing his head at the bellowing roar as the storm arrived with vehemence. Colt raced Tank as fast as was safe. He wouldn’t risk hurting the stallion. Rain dripped off the rim of his ivory Stetson. Water coated his blue jeans and gray tee shirt, and slipped down his calves into his brown leather cowboy boots. At least they were one of his older, well-worn pairs he reserved for working the stables.

They crested a tiny ridge. The hickory cabin sat on an open half acre of land encircled by a grove of trees—a mixture of aspen, cottonwood, and spruce. Hail began to fall with the rain, pelting them. The trees receded and in the open terrain, Colt pressed his knees against Tank’s flanks to increase their speed. Tank needed no urging from him.

But as the cabin came into full view, Colt spied a battered, tan SUV parked in front of the wooden structure. And there was a sprite of a woman, long dark hair plastered to her body, carting what looked like telescopes inside the building.

What the hell? Who was she, and what was she doing here?

Researching for the Books

My goal in writing the Loving a Warrior series was to focus on topics relevant to the military. I’ve never served, but both my dad and my husband were career military, so I’ve spent my entire life around it. My husband also wasn’t a Navy SEAL, but during the course of his job he worked closely with them and is still friends with some today.

Undertaking the research for these books was a labor of love, but at the same time pretty daunting. While there have been a lot written about Navy SEALs in recent years, they’re usually about specific missions and what led up to them. It’s hard to find information on what daily life is really like, for both the SEAL and those who love them.

Enter podcasts!

Podcasts have been around for awhile, but they’d never really been on my radar as a research source. I stumbled across one by accident, a podcast put on by a former Navy SEAL, and I was immediately hooked! He talks about the realities of life in special operations and what it’s like for their families. I was able to pick up some of the lingo, and get a peek inside their heads, a real understanding of the type of person who makes it through such brutal training and goes on to serve. I think listening to these podcasts has helped me add a depth to my stories that might not otherwise have been possible.

Writing TRUSTING A WARRIOR wasn’t easy. It deals with a difficult topic—veteran suicide—but at its heart it’s how two very different people find common ground and eventually fall in love. Lani doesn’t want to trust a special operations guy again, and Geo can’t imagine spending his life doing anything else. I wanted to find that balance between crafting a romance about a SEAL and making it seem real and relatable.

I credit my podcasts—and my amazing editor—for helping me achieve my goal!
Thanks so much for hosting me today!

George Monteverdi always had one goal, to become a navy SEAL. Now that he’s both a SEAL and a K-9 handler, saving lives is his priority. When tragedy touches his own life, he handles it—with the help of his crew and his dog, Bosch. Having those guys by his side means he’ll never be alone…though any sort of romance feels like a faraway dream.

Heartbroken after her fiancé falls in love with another woman, Lani Abuel seeks comfort in the arms of a stranger, only to find herself pregnant and alone. She’ll do whatever it takes to be a good mother, which means finally facing the trauma in her past. The last thing she expected was a warrior with wounds all too similar to hers finding his way into her heart and loving her child as his own.

As their worlds entwine, Lani and Geo find the joy and redemption they’ve been seeking. But despite the sanctuary they’ve created, a forever love seems impossible. A K-9 handler who spends most of his time deployed with his SEAL team, staring danger in the eye, is far from what Lani—or her baby—needs, and Geo can’t imagine a future doing anything else.

Holding Lani’s eyes with his, Geo tilted the tip of the bottle toward her. “To new friends.”

Smiling, she clinked her glass with his. “And badass dogs.”

Geo couldn’t remember the last time a meal tasted so delicious. He stuffed himself to the gills, finally leaning back in his chair to hide a satisfied belch behind his hand.

Forking up the last bite of her spinach salad, Lani groaned. “I’m so full. I need to get out and move.”

He couldn’t resist. “I thought you didn’t like to exercise. Ow!”

She glared at him as she kicked his shin again. “You’re not supposed to make fun of me.” She surged to her feet in mock outrage and started clearing the table. As she bent over him to pick up his plate, he found himself reaching up to brush the backs of his fingers down her smooth cheek.

“You had some flour there,” he said huskily. “Got it.”

Their eyes met, the spark of desire in hers kicking his heartbeat into a sudden gallop.

“Mmm, well…” As he sat breathless, she picked up his napkin and dabbed it gently along the corners of his mouth. “Had some butter there. Got it.”

They stared at each other, and she leaned in closer. Helplessly, he lifted his face, lips parting…

Crash!

The fork sliding from his plate to the table broke the spell, and with a self-conscious chuckle, she straightened and turned to carry the dishes to the sink.

Geo raked a hand through his hair, once again willing his body to calm down.

She’s having a baby and you’re leaving, asshole.

Shit. If he repeated that enough times to himself, maybe he’d eventually be able to remember it.

Alex tipped her gaze, forcing her to look into his eyes.

She gasped. She wasn’t supposed to look at the Masters, and wasn’t sure if he was a true dom. Still, she should avert her gaze out of respect. Since he’d forced her to his will, she drank in the details of his face.

If she had to describe him, she’d say refined. The suit fit him well, and his gray hair, sprinkled with black strands, accentuated his blue eyes. The beard brought out the starkness of his cheeks and the lines at the corners of his eyes. She longed to kiss him and taste his lips.

“Do you know why you’re here?” Alex asked.

“No.” She wished she did. Had he been the one to request her?

“You’re here because I’ve decided I want my very own waitress for the duration of my stays at the club. Just you.”

“Oh. Me?”

“Uh-huh.” He petted her hair. “There is no one like you here at the club.”

“There are lots of pretty blonde girls here,” she said, then wishing she’d kept her mouth. “I’m sorry.”

“I appreciate your honesty.” He didn’t smile, but he imparted warmth in his gaze.

“I’m out of line.” She laced her hands together. “But you have chosen me. I’m at your disposal.”

“Good girl.”
