The idea was Jennifer Haley’s. Dan Fogelberg is one of her favorite authors, and when the one year anniversary of his death was approaching she came up with the idea of writing reunion stories based on the lyrics of “Same Old Lang Syne” from four different authors’ perspectives. The one difference—our stories had to have a happily ever after.

Pasts are best left behind, hidden deep in your memory—that is where I buried mine. The feel of his hands and mouth on my body, the height of sensuality I reached beneath his touch. I’d fought so hard to forget—how could just the sight of him bring it all back, forcing me to become lost in him?

Again.

Years before I had watched him, craved him—a guitarist in a band riding the wave to stardom—my brother’s best friend. On the verge of womanhood, I never dared to reveal how I yearned. Until a cold New Year’s Eve when I offered myself as the woman I’d become, bringing to fruition the deepest of wants. As that night turned, so did my life. Devastatingly so.

I never dreamed I’d become another of his one night stands.

Can pasts be exorcised if they come back to haunt you? And when a notorious playboy who broke your heart offers you his…how do you know if he’s playing for keeps?

Their relationship fascinated me and I wish more had been revealed or explained about their backgrounds and what went on while they were apart. I found parts of the story a bit confusing, but overall felt it was a good read.

The premise of this short story was interesting, but I felt that the story ended a bit too abruptly. I longed to know more about this couple as they seemed to have an interesting backstory and I was curious about what would happen beyond that night. At times I felt as if I were reading an excerpt from a book rather than a whole story, but what I did read was very enjoyable and well-written.

But when he hears that Lindy’s dumped her fiancé and headed to Costa Rica, it’s the perfect time to mix business with pleasure and help Lindy discover her inner bad girl isn’t all that far from the surface.

In Bad Enough, Lindy and Rafe share an easy relationship and chemistry that I found very appealing. I enjoyed the humor and banter that comes with a couple that shares a longtime relationship. They were comfortable with each other and had a familiarity that kept their encounters from being awkward or seeming unbelievable. The chemistry and passion between the two sizzles in this hot read as their built-up sexual tension finally finds a release.

And while Bad Enough is a romance, it is also about Lindy’s personal growth. Due to changes in her life and her trip, Lindy grows as a person and as a result gains a confidence and a new relationship with her good friend. You could sense the changes in both Lindy and Rafe as these two friends make the transition from pals to lovers. Despite their insistence, they both knew there was no going back and that scared them as they feared losing their friendship.

Bad Enough is a wonderful read featuring a believable and hot relationship between two fascinating individuals.

When Lola stopped at the grocery store, she had no idea she’d be picking up a Master Sergeant…

After a brief flirtation with a mouth-watering hottie in the produce section, Lola hurries to her car, hoping to beat the predicted snow storm. Instead, she accidentally runs down the sexy soldier with her cart. Though he assures her he’s fine, concern for his condition along with her body’s sizzling reaction to his heated touch prompts Lola to take him home and administer a bit of personal first aid.

This was a cute little short that I found to be very enjoyable. When Damon blows off Lola by calling her old, she is crushed. Then the weather turns bad and the man in the truck behind her seemed like a jerk, because he keeps blowing his horn at her. It turns out he’s flirting with Lola. I enjoyed her thoughts as she kept up the flirtation from her car. When she lost the truck behind her, I was a little disappointed.

Things really heated up at Lola’s home. The sexual quips that they traded were well written and razor sharp. Details may have been sketchy at the beginning of the story but not so at the end. I could feel the building heat in Lola and Sam’s reactions to her TLC.

This was a very concise story that had more heat than many longer stories. I enjoyed Master Sergeant and think it is a good, complete read when you have only a small amount of time.

Ryan Redford’s reputation as a hard-nosed secret service agent in Cape Town, South Africa nearly goes out the window when his best friend’s sexy, all grown up, little sister orchestrates an all-out, everything bared, seduction. To protect both his body and his heart, he describes the most depraved acts he can think of–everything he’s fantasized about doing to her–sure to scare the virgin away. Hell, they scared him.

Except when she takes his threats as promises, she expects him to deliver.

The Midnight Rose scorches right from the very first page as we meet Leah when she is picking out lingerie for her special evening and imagining what she would like to do with an unsuspecting Ryan. From there things only get hotter as Leah and Ryan discover what more can be between them. I enjoyed the history that Ryan and Leah share with one another and chemistry between them is palpable. The sister/brother’s best friend plot was one that I really enjoy and I loved how the author handled it.

A very quick read, the story was a bit too short for my tastes as I would have loved to know more about their relationship and what would happen next, but as a short story the author did a good job of creating likeable characters in a realistic setting or scenario. I became invested in these characters and their relationship and wanted to know more. However, the story does start out a bit slow and it took me a bit to really get into it, but despite this, it was still very enjoyable.

The Midnight Rose is a very hot and fast read that I am glad I read.

BDSM is a lifestyle that is based on mutual trust. It is often misunderstood and is something that people are at times, ashamed of. That is the case in this story. Tessa needs more but having been considered strange by a previous boyfriend, she is afraid to voice what she wants. Zac, a dom, is afraid to be himself as it has driven off a previous girlfriend and he does not want it to happen again with Tessa.

I liked that he kept calling her on the telephone and even went where he knew she would be. He truly cared for Tessa as evidenced by how he waited a week for her to really think about what she wanted and to give her time to make sure she was certain.

I enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the rooms in David’s home along with what goes on in them. I loved how Tessa’s expressions were captured in words when she and Zac were in the basement of the home. I could feel Tessa’s disappointment when Zac took her home that evening and dropped her off with just a stapled stack of papers.

Ms. Leeland gave me a thrilling tale of love and a lifestyle that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Unsure of herself, Gabrielle is a heroine one can easily relate to. With her insecurities, she feels very real and you can feel her hesitancy and fears as she decides to throw caution to the wind and act on her impulses with Luke.

The chemistry between Gabrielle and Luke was great. You could almost feel it from their very first encounter and knew it was only a matter of time before they acted on it…which definitely happened sooner rather than later in this story. And when they do, the scenes are very hot and passionate.

Misunderstandings and self-doubt eventually combine to keep the two apart, but I enjoyed how the author worked things out. My only complaint is that the ending and resolution felt a bit rushed. Other than that Bedroom Behavior 101 was a wonderful read about two characters discovering more about themselves while also finding love.

When Serena Adams collided with a gorgeous young stranger on a crowded subway, nothing could have prepared her for the hottest ride of her life…

Serena gets more than she bargained for when her ordinary morning commute turns into an erotic encounter with a much younger man able to excite her with the merest touch. Later that morning, Serena’s prospective new client turns out to be her El train stranger and she can’t believe her misfortune. If she can’t ride the rails without wanting to devour him, how will she manage to work with him professionally?

Julian St. Claire believed he would never see the beautiful woman from the El again. However, this turns out to be his lucky day when she falls into his lap hours later. Never one to back down from a challenge, he pursues the sexy siren, despite her protests about their age difference. The way Julian sees it, age is no match for undeniable chemistry.

Can the two sort our their differences to enjoy the physical attraction they discovered…riding the rail?

I enjoyed this delightful story about an older woman and younger man in Chicago. I was happy that Ms. Devlin wrote about the subjects she knew, Chicago and management consultants, as it made the story that much more enjoyable. She wrote strong details of the city, including the El trains and how they do go underground on several of the lines and that there is an El stop at Clark and Lake Streets. Also her knowledge of management consultations showed in the story with Serena’s meetings with Julian and Ryan. All these little things made the story much more enjoyable for me.

I loved the character of Serena Adams. She was an older, divorced woman making her way in the world. She longs for someone in her life, romantically, but is very image conscious. I loved the interplay between Serena and Julian on the El at the beginning of the story. The bumping and jostling that occurs during the morning rush, and the playfulness that went on. I laughed when Serena realized who was hiring her company. That whole first meeting was very cute. I liked the struggle that she had in coming to terms with herself and her needs.

Julian St. Claire is a genius who comes from a solid working class family. Julian does not care about age differences. When Serena mentions the ten year difference, Julian comes back with the standard reply: age is just a number. But he truly believes it. I believe that Julian has his head on straight. He is at that point in his life that he wants to start settling down. He’s made something of himself and wants to begin to enjoy it. That’s why he and Ryan want to hire a management consultant to help them out with their company. I loved how he uses unfair tactics to get Serena to agree to go to dinner with him. I felt that Julian really wanted to see if there is something special going on between he and Serena.

I loved the entire story, but the end really made me smile. It was cute how it was on the El, and very clever how the author had the story looping around to end just like it began, the same way the trains do downtown Chicago.

I found Riding the Rails to be a very well written story of romance in the most unexpected places. I recommend this delightful story which is set in my hometown.
